As i mentioned president obama sitting in the midst of multiple meetings hes having at the white house, members of his cabinet and Different Community leaders talking about, you know, what happened. You were in the thick of it in ferguson. Im wonder if you had a chance to talk to these younger people, if they are talking about what they would like to hear publicly from the president of the United States . Reporter well, i think they want to see more action. I think a lot of these people are tired of words but they are looking for action. Action in terms of changing the laws, making Police Departments, having more africanamerican representation or latino representation in Police Departments. I think at this point at least from what im hearing not just here in new york but also in ferguson they are tired of the words. They want to see action. Brooke. All right. Jason carroll in new york. Louis the night that that grand jury decision was made public. Just a short time ago we talked about what hes telling his own children and what he would say to officer Darren Wilson. Take me back, to it was monday night the grand jury decision was made public. You happened to be at a show in st. Louis. We were the only act that didnt cancel. That emotion on stage, can you just tell me everything that was behind that we watched the verdict come down, and my wife walked to the bathroom and started weeping. She was playing, i think, sam cook, change is going to come. When your wife looks at you sean ace i dont know if god loves us. I never heard anything that helpless in a moment since i read a passage from a holocaust survivor that questioned that god existed. It just hurt. I couldnt do anything. I was helpless in that moment. My rap partner who is white came and comforted me. He and my wife said you should say something. Usually we come out to another song. She said we should come out and say something. We will not accept it. We will keep playing that race card because we know you know what were friends and nothing is going to devalue that. I dont know what i was going to stage. I got on stage and told the truth. Im curious if you wish the president had gone to ferguson. Hes president of the United States. In my black father heart, i do wish he went. Absolutely. Die expect that from a sitting u. S. President . Absolutely not. He has to be hands off in the office of presidency in that way, but as a black father and as a black man i would hope when he stepped away from that podium, when he went and sat on the bed next to his wife, i hope he experienced the same feelings of hopelessness and helplessness that i felt because those feelings are what invigorates you the next day to fight the better fight. What do you as an american, a black american want to hear from him. I want to hear from him theres a change in the police state in america. We lost a number of liberties since the patriot act. I want to see some of those things repealed. I could stay in the emotion of ferguson. But that keeps it at that moment. This is a Constitutional Rights issue. All of our rights are being violated by bad policing when any of your 0 rights are being violated. My take with the president is actually a little bit of ferguson. What your going to do to reinstate the rights of americans not to be treated like we have a militimilitia. The st. Louis rams they yesterday walked out a couple of the players hands up. It was four. The Police Association is livid. They say thats absolutely uncalled for. Justice was served through the process that was the grand jury. Do you think they should have done that . Of that their place . Let me say first of all, the Police Association and the Police Officers work for the taxpayers noter to way around. This is a time you should be silent because regardless of justice has been served, trust that justice has been served and dont worry about court of opinion after that. You must remember you work for the constituency. We dont work for you. Our tax dollars pay your salary, your salary is we are here. Were the one, were your boss. If those players wanted to walk out as Conscientious Objectors to the decision, they should do that. If you dont, if youre the most looked at people out of this culture, if you are not doing that then youre being irresponsible and youre letting the people who most support you down. I believe jim brown was right. I believe all the athletes of the 60s was right. I believe we need more athletes doing this today because at the end of the day a couple years salary for some of these guys will take care of you for the rest of your life so what do you have to lose except the court of public opinion. Again i said from the start i dont think engagement was engaged correctly. I think that due process was never served. Then we can say all the time a fight incurred, he was afraid for his life. It was because this due process was never served. This young man was never given a chance to be brought up on jay walking. Ive end in am fight. I have been in many a fight. I can tell you that the marks on that mans face who happened to be white, if hit by a 270 pound or 300 pound person would not look like a shaving mark. All my white male friends said thats how my face looks like after i shave. I am not skang you scuffled. But if it was as brutal as youre telling me. Ive been in a fight. Doesnt mean im not sympathetic to Police Officers. In this particular Police Officer something is awry. The boys and girls who made for the tougher discussion . Girls. Why. They are 17 and 7. This was a discussion i knew i would have to have for my boys. My father told me, you are to say yes, sir and no, sir in face of authority and parents. Youre not to fiddle. Youre not to seem fidgety or make aggressive moves towards police. I was thought. My sons were taught this. My girls i have never taught this. They are the most like me. Most outspoken. Try to explain to a 17yearold why an 18yearold is dead and he hadnt been arrested, didnt have an opportunity to get taken to trial and nothing was going to happen to the person she perceived murdering him its a hard discussion for her to understand. Shes in a school of law. It was supposed to play out differently. When you wake up the next morning to a voice mail from your 7yearold daddy why was Michael Brown killed and why are people angry with so each other and why is violence happening. When a 7yearold asks you that you dont that have answers. I wept on the phone and said baby i dont know. How can we make this better . First of all, we can get out of our comfortable norms. Meaning, can you go to a Different Church with a friend on sunday and have a different experience. You can engage in a different sornl climate than youre accustomed to. You can make a friend that doesnt look like you and find someone who doesnt look like you to converse with. We have to start pushing ourselves past the barriers of comfort we hold. I grew up in a black household. Grew up in a household where pretty much whatever Democratic Party said rang supreme. With that said many of my friends are conservative. Many of my friends are republicans and libertarians. Because i had a father that was involved in policing i have to look at it. I have two cousins that are police. I pray for them daily. So i seek out relationships with people who dont look like me, know where im from and will challenge me on my current perspectives. Hes meeting with members of his cabinet, meeting with different civil rights leaders, multigenerational to talk about potential changes because in talking to our correspondents here covering these folks who are marching they say they are sick and tired of the Police Brutality as witnessed by some of the pictures of those protests back in august in ferguson. So well wait to hear from the president and also our attorney general eric holder speaking later this evening holding a forum of sorts as well at dr. Kings church in atlanta. Lets move on. It is a case of the First Amendment colliding with the internet. The u. S. Supreme court today success asked for the first time to examine the limits of free speech on social media. Specifically how does the law address violent language and threats posted on social media. So, our goto guy, mr. Jeffrey toobin our senior legal analyst. Lets begin with the story. The guy who posted all of these angry ramblings on facebook his name is anthony ilonas through a divorce, posting all this stuff about his exwife, the exwife side saying incredibly threatening, ilonas side his attorney saying this is like rap lyrics from eminen threatening to kill his mother or exwife, didnt mean to carry them out. Am i right . Thats the case. Its a hard, hard case. I got to say, it was interesting i was reading the transcript of the oral argument that took place this morning. The justices are confused about this case. Why . How do you tell the difference between someone blowing off steam and someone who is actually making a threat . Its easy to define, you know, the difference in the abstract but once you get to actual statements it gets really hard. In this case, it is really a classic example of that. Now the government says, you know, this is why we have juries. You ask a jury would a reasonable person take these statements as threats. But mr. Ilonas and his lawyer say no thats not standard, we dont leave free speech up to juries. You need to prove that i, the defendant intended to threaten someone. You need to have a subjective standard not an objective standard. Let me hit pause and read one of these postings part of what got him in trouble. Wrote this on facebook. If i only knew what i no know i would have smothered your [ bleep ] in a pillow dumped your body in the back seat, dropped your body in toad creek and make it took like rape or murder. Thats pretty bad. Its pretty bad. But its a if you want to parse it. I would have done it. Not a threat to do it in the future. The jury thats what elonis said. The jury said no thats threatening youre gutty. Elonis is now serving seven years in prison. This is a first for the Supreme Court. I feel like a lot of times when we talk about stories like this not at this level, its a matter of the law not catching up with social media, technology. Especially with Supreme Court justice in their 70s and 80s. I dont think they know what twitter is. Fortunately they have law clerks and actually they have been pretty good about adopting to modern technology in most of their decisions. What i think is the key issue in this case is something thats not mentioned in the briefs. Its newtown. Its pueblo, colorado, aurora. Sorry. Where individuals have given signs that something bad was going to happen but they were not stopped, they were not questioned and i think the justices will have in the back of their mind you know what . Were going to err on the side of making sure people are at least questioned and investigated if they are talking like this on social media. Because that question of, you know, why werent they stopped soon center why werent they interrogated sooner is such a big question. That i think the justices thats going to play significantly. Martin, whats happening at the church tonight . Reporter you know, president obama asked for these regional meetings to take place, the attorney general came to atlanta. Hell be meeting first with the mayor, the chief of police, civic leaders, political leaders, faith leaders, student leaders. After that then theres an Interfaith Service followed by a community forum. The where is the Martin Luther king, jr. Historic site where Martin Luther king, jr. Was born. Also where he was raised in the church where he preached and the date december 1st, 1955, was when rosa parks refused to give up her seat at the front of the bus whites only section in montgomery, alabama. Those historic points remember not lost. The relevancy is known by the pastor here, the Senior Pastor who spoke on new day yesterday. Tomorrow is the 59th anniversary of the beginning of the montgomery bus boycott. That was a local movement that turned into a National Struggle that changed our country. Once again as we look at events in ferguson, we need to change our nation again so that all of us can be assured that we rest under the promise of our judicial system equal protection under the law. Reporter historians will point out that that bus boycott proved among many things that large peaceful social protests can bring about historic change. Thats clearly a message that the white house wants to reinforce again today. In reading about whats happening at ebenezer and in some of the president s meetings at the white house, multigenerational, you know, they want to speak with younger folks, older folks, who im sure perceive not just race but socioeconomic issues potentially differently . One of the things that has been felt by those who were the original founder of the Civil Rights Movement is perhaps its been lost on the young, so much time has passed, admittedly there are still many things that have to change but major changes have occurred. So now i think they are pointing out to young people saying look what was relevant then still very relevant today, tissue of community policing, the issue of the relationship of communities or communities of color to police forces, thats still vital today as ferguson has proven, brooke. Also talking about the president of the United States in multiple meetings today with regard to what happened in ferguson and moving forward, Michelle Kosinski is our white house correspondent. Michele, tell me about this executive order. Reporter a couple of things the white house wants to do. First they want this task force to be formed, looking at community policing. They want more money, that they are asking for from congress to help Fund Training for police, local Police Departments and 50,000 body cameras. Thats something that could potentially in the future answer those difficult questions that are proving unanswerable in ferguson. Theres still questions surrounding that. The white house believe these body cameras used properly and with training could work. They also want to do a further review of what the president already commissioned back in august, looking at federal programs that give money and military equipment to local Police Departments. The results of that initial review came out today but the president wants more review, they want to go further with more recommendations and found things like over the past five years nearly half a million pieces of military equipment have been given to local police department, things like more than 5,000 humvees, aircraft, ammunition but what they found was glaring lack of consistency, training and Community Input in giving that stuff to Police Departments. Now the obvious question is well if the white house is doing this study and they want more does the white house then see that militarization of Police Departments as some have portrayed it contributing to whats continuing in ferguson and the white house doesnt want to go that far to say they feel that was the problem but they said it is an issue that has been raised and, obviously, when the white house looks at the broader problem and thats what the house says it wants to do. It wants to look at the broader issue not just in ferguson or that region or that community but across the nation. Its apparent thats one area they want to look at. Giving this military equipment and tens of thousands of rounds of ammo to local police. Concerns weve heard echoed on the streets throughout the country with some of these walkouts, some of these protests were watching, video of Michelle Kosinski at the white house. Thank you. Lets go way back to when you found out you were first infected because of a blood transfusion when you had your first child. I was watching an interview before and your initial reaction was relief. Tell me why. Well, when i was first told that i might be hiv positive, i was also told that i needed to get every Single Person in our family tested. My oldest daughter was born before my blood transfusion but i had her tested. My other two kids were born to an hiv tested mom. So there was a possibility all of five of us were hiv positive. When it came back it was just me i was relieved i could handle it myself but much worse to have my children and my husband also be infected. Thats an incredibly selfless response to something im sure would be incredible ly trepidatious. Ryan, you were about 6 when you heard about this. When did it hit you . You know, i think when youre that young its tough to pinpoint a moment that im like oh, this is what it is. But i think, in that time period, for one, im seeing my mom react to the side effects of taking the medicine that would keep her alive. But also, you know, im young, very vocal and open about it, as a second grader, i believe. Youre telling your classmates. Even at that age yeah definitely at that age i had a sense it was a stigma. An unusual thing. So i think just seeing what was happening to her personally and then also just seeing how my community reacted to it is when i began to understand i want as a young kid. The 30 30 project kind of began in what youre talking about, which was sort of commemorating and celebrating that my mom had, in fact, survived for 30 years with this disease which is just unusual and not what our family has expected. And through that and through construction for change who my mom is working with, wanted to do something big, wanted to do something special, kind of that mark. And originally just kind of had a vision for one clinic that would stand strong for 30 years and offer health care and medicine to a community that needs it the very most. Sort of recognizing that without that medicine and health care my mom wouldnt have survived. And then that expanded. At this point, we have almost five clinics fully funded and were on our way to 30 of them worldwide. Phenomenal, phenomenal. I know that you all are so out there and talking about this. And im wondering, julie, final question, for all the people who cant quite get through to you that they are themselves infected. Whats your message to them when theyre worried . To someone who is newly diagnosed, i would just love to tell them, ive lived 30 years, that its possible that there is lifesaving medications, theres there are wonderful doctors. And also especially if theyre in the United States, theres great local aids service organizations. So i suggest they get in touch with them and find out whats available in their community, lots of support, support groups. Thats what got me through, really. We had no philosophical differences with this piece. We always reserved the right to not publish this interview. And that was a decision and a pact that we had going in, that if we were not comfortable with the final project, we just simply werent going to print it. Let me talk about the meat in the interview. You have said you agree with janay rice, that ray rice deserves a chance to rejoin the nfl. Tell me why. If you looked at the nfls history, especially with players. Theyre players who have been convicted of some very serious crimes. Dallas bray was convicted of killing one of his teammates in a tragic dui incident. Hes playing football. Dante stallworth al convicted of killing a man in a car accident is allowed to play football. Michael vick went to prison. Hes playing football. Theres a pretty good track record of them all receiving a second chance. Do you think a team will take him . I do. I dont know if it will be this season. But i think eventually they will. This is a talentbased, productionbased business. The nfl put on good football teams and teams have to win. He was a pretty good running back. He had a down year in 2013.
