And towns devastated by the terror group. The next stops for secretary kerry, turkey and egypt to discuss how to bring stability to iraq and syria. From australia to britain, rallying the usual allies in this isis fight is one thing but todays news, the support of these arab countries is an asset that cannot be understated. And incidentally, its the very game of friends and enemies that may be the ultimate destruction of isis and my next guest is here to explain, contributing editor at vanity fair. Nice to see you. Ten reasons the Islamic State is doomed. Those ten reasons are actually enemies. We have them right here. Ill keep this list up for a bit. Really, hone in if you can on a few of these. The first of course being the u. S. We heard the news that allies in this fight now include this list of arab countries so how does this change things . Weve obviously taken the right path. One of the things that people dont understand i think or too many people dont understand, isis is not al qaeda. While they both are truly focused on the United States, al qaeda goes from the mindset of first you attack the United States and then you purify islam. Isis wants to purify islam and then go after the United States. What that means for them is that they slaughter every muslim who they dont think is pure. When you go through the list of who they dont think is pure, its virtually every muslim except them. They have gone after hezbollah. Theyve actually condemned the head of al qaeda. Obviously theyre going after the shia. They are killing sunni. There are a group of the islamists in syria, seven of them, seven groups have abounded together in order to fight isis. If we hadnt been able to bring in the arab nations, if we hadnt been able to bring in arab groups, we would be in a very difficult situation. Thats what isis was hoping for. Their biggest fear are other musli muslims. Lets talk about iran and syrian governments. The irony here that we now share the very same enemy. Do you see the u. S. Working with syria and iran in a real way here . I cannot imagine that well be working with syria. I think well be working with the seven groups that are fighting syria but solely in the role of helping them fight isis. Iran, i think, what were having already is a wink and nod cooperation. Iran is shia. They are right next door to iraq. They are as threatened by a sunni, sunnis and shias are always against each other. They are as threatened by a group of sunni psychopaths which is what isis really is as anybody and fortunately iran also has one of the strongest militaries in the middle east so what youve got is a situation where our interests and irans interests are allied. Our interests in every nation and every group in the middle east are aligned and the danger would be that if we put lots of boots on the ground and we went in and started, you know, a major fight, well, remember, these are enemies who are now sharing our interests. Isis was hoping we would do that because then they could turn everyone against us and get everyone away from going after them. What weve done now is create this very rickety but essential alliance between all of these different Muslim States and organizations and the United States. As you said, isis will be defeated by its own brutality against the people who might otherwise be its allies. Appreciate your time. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. The u. S. Gains crucial arab support for the fight against isis as americans observe 9 11. As we all remember the victims of september 11th, those who are supposed to keep us safe are focused on the most likely terror targets, tunnels and bridges. Poppy harlow, are there any specific threats against bridges and tunnels in new york city that we should know about . Reporter im happy to report absolutely not at this point and thats coming from the head of the nypd telling us this morning as hes been telling us all week, they dont know about any specific threats to new york city this week around the anniversary. That does not mean that they are not on very high alert. The nypd always is watching potential targets like behind me, the brooklyn bridge, all of the tunnels. The subway system here. They have 7,000 plus cameras just in Lower Manhattan alone. You cannot drive in and out of new york city without your license plate being monitored and recorded. They have 1,000 plus nypd officers solely on the antiterrorism division. That gives you a sense of what theyre looking at. This morning when i spoke with bill bratton, head of nypd, we talked about how the city is prepared for today and what theyre facing. Listen. Well, theres multiple potential threats certainly from al qaeda and now new and growing potential threat with isis and the nypd and our federal colleagues have to be constantly vigilant against potential of an attack. Theres nothing that we are aware of today that is specifically targeting this city on this significant day. The nature of terrorism is that you have to be constantly vigilant to try to prevent it. Reporter one thing that he said that really stood out to me is were vigilant working to keep up with what the terrorist are developing. Everything they develop something different, security measures for us at airports changes. We notice it in that way. Nypd has to stay on their toes as things change here because the threat is constantly evolving even though its not m imminent to this city thank goodness right now. Poppy harlow for us. In the case of ray rice and the videotape, was there a coverup. The nfl is enlisting a former head of the fbi to find out. The leak says Robert Mueller will lead an independent investigation into the pursuit and handling of evidence that showed the exbaltimore raven knocking his now wife out cold. Godden goodell insisted he never saw the tape. Goodell told reporters wednesday on rice says happened did not match the video. The description of what happened is not consistent with what the videotape was. When you see that, that was clear. Thats why we took the action that we did. It was completely unacceptable. It was graphic. It was violent and something that we felt we had to take an Immediate Reaction to. And goodell maintains no one in the nfl saw the knockout footage. At that brings us to the alleged coverup because the Associated Press is reporting this. That a Law Enforcement official without being asked provided a copy of the video to the nfl five months ago. The ap says a woman left a message acknowledging its receipt saying your right. Its terrible. The nfl says its looking into it. Rices boss, ravens owner, says hes taking a hard looking at it himself for messing up. I was picturing her whaling on him and him smacking her and maybe her head was this far from the wall and with her aneed be ration dropped. He had a stellar record and cops had seen the video. With me, ashleigh banfield. Robert mueller led the fbi in the past but still some are questioning how independent this investigation is really going to be. Great resume. You cant get better than that. This man knows how to investigate but he also is with a law firm based in washington, d. C. That is very tied to nfl issues. His law firm helped negotiate the nfl sunday ticket with directv. They also helped negotiate the Dallas Cowboys purchase and they represented Washington Redskins owner dan snyder and two guys who are overseeing him are owners. Its odd to hear that. Theyre nfl owners. They themselves have the connection. Big connection to the nfl. Cozy. Members of the key nfl committees. They advised goodell throughout his tenure. Its a cozy relationship. My next question. Were talking so much about did they see the tape or not see the tape. What happens if it is determined that the nfl did view this tape before it gave ray rice this twogame suspension . Were not talking about the criminal Justice System anymore. By the way, shame on the criminal Justice System to letting this one go and giving this pretrial special treatment. Were talking about a private club like we were talking with the nba. They come out with a plan. Expect a great time line. Youll see great time line. After that they dont even have subpoena power. They rely on the good hearts of those within the nfl to just volunteer everything and once you have the report its public but then what . Its up to the owners to decide if goodell is going to go and they love him. Hes done wonders for them. Or its up to goodell himself to say in the interest of the public image and the shield as they call it, i got to go. Everybody who is talking about this online bloggers, sports community, reporters, all say dont expect this man to go any time soon. If they did know, its going to be something if they had seen that tape. Do you know what else though . Were talking about it now but news cycles have a way of playing themselves out and perhaps this long investigation, which is what it will probably be, may help in that respect. You wont forget it. Heck know. I have a show called legal view. Are you kidding me . Nice to see you. From emotions to outrage, an nba star suggests a man isnt beating a woman if she strikes first. Ill speak with a couple women who have strong opinions about that remark and tonight the ravens are playing in front of a National Audience and the person singing the opening theme song, r rihanna. A victim of Domestic Violence. I got this. [thinking] is it that time . The son picks up the check . [thinking] im still working. Hes retired. I hope hes saving. I hope he saved enough. Who matters most to you says the most about you. At massmutual were owned by our policyowners, and they matter most to us. Whether youre just starting your 401 k or you are ready for retirement, well help you get there. The ray rice controversy is exposing how some people feel about Domestic Abuse. Paul george tweeted his illadvised thoughts and now hes regretting that. I want to read you some of what he tweeted. I dont condone hitting women or think its cool but if she aint tripping then i aint tripping. Lets keep it moving. Let that man play. So george tweeted more after that. What more did he say . First of all, first thing, theres no lol when we talk about Domestic Violence, paul george. The first tweet wasnt bad enough he tweeted after that if youre in a relationship and a woman hit you first and attacking you, then you obviously aint beating her. Homey made a bad choice. How long is it going to take for him to delete the tweets and how long is it going to take for him to put up a retraction . Probably five minutes before that happened. He deleted the tweets he put up and put up apology saying he was sorry to victims of Domestic Violence but then it seemed like the nba got involved because not too long after we got a statement from his team, the Indiana Pacers, and also an apology statement from him. Larry bird, president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers sent us this statement. He said paul georges tweets from earlier were thoughtless and without regard to the subject of Domestic Violence and its seriousness in society. We have talked to paul to strongly express our displeasure and made it clear the nba and Pacers Organization will not condone or tolerate remarks of this nation. Paul understands he was wrong and why his tweets were so inappropriate and is very apologetic. Paul george himself said i want to apologize to all victims of Domestic Abuse for my insensitive tweets. They were obviously without proper understanding of the seriousness of the situation and i seriously regret my poor choice of words. Now paul george is not just a star in the nba. Hes on the cusp of super stardom. Hes the face of that franchise. This is bad. A lot of young people look up to this guy. What kind of message do these tweets send . The obvious message is that paul george is seriously misinformed at best. Potentially someone who doesnt have a clear understanding of what Domestic Abuse is. To copy what you said. To put an lol. Come on. Have we not had enough examples over the last couple years of what happens when you put something out on twitter . Free speech is part of our constitution. Youre free to say whatever it is that you want to say. You are not free from the consequences. And what he is saying unfortunately really reflects societys overall perspective on Domestic Violence. Its a joke. Think about one of his tweets when he said that ray rice made a mistake. Lets be clear. Domestic violence is not a mistake. You just dont mistakenly knock your fiance out and drag her out of an elevator. You dont mistakenly intend to dominate her. Certainly the woman being the aggressor continues to be a part of this conversation. And that women shouldnt provoke being hit by a man. Whats your reaction . Thats what troubles me so much. I think thats become a narrative and a false narrative in this whole situation. I female like its a little bit historic. I think that it kind of places this devaluization on an africanamerican women to say she provokes it throughout history black women are known as having a smart mouth or angry black woman or always talking back. So somehow we have done something to provoke Something Like that. That narrative has to stop. Enough. Im so tired of it. I cant even tell you. This is such a common tactic by abusers, by the media, by corporations, to deflect attention away from the real crime. Janay rice is not on trial here. Unfortunately shes been put on trial based upon her decision to stay with her batterer. It shows she did nothing to provoke it. Thats whats insane. You see people on twitter that keep saying what if your wife hits you . What are you supposed to do . Okay, look, lets stay on point. Were talking about a specific instance in which a woman did not provoke her batterer and he knocked her out. And i want to be very clear about another fact. People say how do you know that this is a pattern . How do you know hes actually an abuser. I can guarantee you this. That ray rice did not just wake up that day or that night because he had a couple drinks and decide that he was going to knock his fiance out. Way before a batterer ever puts his hands on you, he has conditioned you through psychological terrorism, emotional abuse, and other forms of behavior that basically prime you to accept that first hit. And so thats what people need to understand. If someone is knocking his woman out in a public forum, i cringe to think about whats actually happening behind the scenes when the camera is not rolling. A lot of people have said that. Im glad were having this conversation. I agree. Im glad were having this dialogue now. Its time. Thank you both. Nice to see you guys. Breaking right now, an Important Alliance for president obama and his strategy to destroy the terror group isis. A coalition of almost a dozen arab nations joining the fight today agreeing to a coordinated military campaign against isis. The agreement follows meetings today with secretary of state john kerry in saudi arabia. Kerry talked with our Global Affairs correspondent and shes joining me live on the phone to talk about what they discussed. What can you tell us . Reporter well, randi, secretary kerry here meeting with gulf states trying to enlist sunni arab support not just for the new government in iraq but the Global Coalition going against isis. I asked secretary kerry is america at war with isis because it sounded in president obamas beach like we were. The secretary said thats not the right terminology. He said the u. S. Isnt at war. There are a lot of things going on in this Global Campaign that one doesnt necessarily think about in the context of a war. This is a very significant counterterrorism operation thats going to have a lot of different spaces, a lot of different aspects to it and a lot of different moving parts. He also defended the administrations decision to use a congressional authorization given to them in 2001 to go after al qaeda because he said isis can change its name. It can change its stripes but it was an affiliate of al qaeda and he said that those two were connected. We also talked about saudi arabia. Secretary kerry really praising the saudi governments efforts that are going to be used in this coalition. As we know, a lot of the radicalism thats in the region comes from saudi arabia, a lot of the 9 11 hijackers were also from saudi arabia. He said that he tried to make a distinction between the government who is really been fighting terrorism and is going to be working on isis and individuals in saudi arabia and elsewhere in this region that are funding groups like isis and he expects thats going to be a major part of this can to crackdown on the funding. It sounds like you discussed quite a bit with him. We are planning to play that entire interview coming up at the top of hour 3 00 hour. Dont miss that. Thank you very much for that update. New witnesses are coming forward in the shooting death of 18yearold Michael Brown in ferguson, missouri. I spoke with two construction workers who say brown put his hands in the air. I want to show you this exclusive cell phone video. It shows the construction workers reacting just moments after those gunshots rang out. Both men say they did not see how the confrontation began but heres what the construction workers told us in a cnn exclusive interview. Just after 12 00 noon, ferguson, missouri, the men you see in this exclusive cell phone video here gunshots. They are about 50 feet away from Michael Brown and officer darren wilson. The unidentified person captured the witness reaction during the final moments of the shooting. Both were contractors in the area and did not want to be identified. The man on the left in the pink short told cnn they heard one gunshot and 30 seconds later a second shot. He saw Michael Brown staggering and then brown put his hands up and said, okay, okay, okay. The witness told us the cop didnt say get on the ground. He just kept shooting. That same witness described the gruesome scene saying he saw Michael Browns brains come out of his head. Again reiterating his hands were up. Watch how he motions on the video. The video these witnesses say was taken shortly after the shooting ended. If you look closely you can see a Police Officer in the distance beginning to put up crime scene tape. Both men said by the time it was older, there were three officers on the scene but only one involved in the shooting. Another voice is also heard on the tape. The contractor in the green shirt told me that voice belongs to a man he didnt know who pulled up alongside them yelling this. That same contractor in green told me he saw Michael Brown running away from the police car. He said brown put his hands up and that the officer was chasing him. He also said that officer wilson fired another shot at brown while his back was turned. The contractor in the pink shirt also shared this. That a second officer who arrived later to the scene also drew his weapon. He said the one cop was the one who shot him and i saw another officer pull a gun out but he didnt shoot. That same worker described how brown staggered dead after the second shot 20 to 25 feet to the ground explaining he was like a walking dead guy. Keep in mind, these men dont live in ferguson and dont know the brown family. But their account does square with what other witnesses said. A woman who took video of browns body lying in the street said brown was shot from behind like the krcontractor in the grn shirt says. This witness told anderson he didnt see browns hands up. Perhaps because he was running outside to the scene. He did see brown turn around before being fatally shot. By the time i get outside, hes already turned around facing the officer. He has his arms under his stomach. He was halfway down. Like he was going down. The officer lets out about three or four shots at him. After that shooting, the contractor in the pink tshirt told us they were the only two white people out there on the streets so he told his coworker to get the hell out of there before things got ugly. Groups were gathering in the streets. They have since given statements to the police and fbi and one other quick note here that same worker told us that they talked to the officer who was putting up that crime scene tape that you saw in the video before they left. He told them that they were leaving browns body uncovered in the street for evidence and putting up the tape to keep people away. That was his explanation. So legally speaking with the investigation still pending against the officer, is this video a game changer . Anderson cooper 360 and mark geragos always have a spirited discussion. Well talk about that coming up next. Welcome back. New video could shake up the ferguson, missouri, case. Two construction workers in this video say the teen put his hands in the air and that the officer was chasing him. Both men say they were 50 feet away with officer wilson opened fire. A private autopsy shows brown was shot at least six times. Joining me to discuss legal analyst sunny hostin and mark geragos. Sunny, other witnesses have said before that brown put his hands up but this video really shows in realtime the reaction. How do you think it could impact the case . I think its going to be very helpful because were talking about a video taken three minutes after this incident. So it is in realtime and its important to show that. But i think what is remarkable is that everyone is saying this is the game changer. This is whats really going to matter. Guess what . Five other witnesses from the community said the same exact thing and its befuddling to me how these two witnesses that are now not from the community, theyre white, suddenly this is the game changer. Ive got to tell you, i know mark geragos is laughing. I cant begin to tell you how many times when i prosecuted cases in d. C. I had to go into the community and knock on doors begging people to come into my office to give their eyewitness account. Its brave these people did this. This is how prosecutors and investigators make cases every day. You want people from the community to be very brave and come forward and tell you what they saw without having everyone say they didnt really say what they saw. Mark, what do you think . Look, it is a game changer in this sense. You now have two white witnesses. I loved sunny saying in the community out of the community, thats code, isnt it, sunny, for we have some white witnesses opposed to black witnesses. We know weve got a predominantly white grand jury. Lets try to strip away code words and call it what it is. You now have some witnesses who majority of this grand jury will better relate to i hate to say it thats the reality of it. Thats why its a game changer to me. Its sickening in many respects. I think, mark, you and i can agree on something, which is rare, but that it is very brave for people that witness a shooting to come forward especially if they witnessed a shooting in their communities to come forward and explain what they saw because you know these people are going to have to get on the witness stand and theyre going to be cruise side by members of the defense bar like yourself and made to appear as if they didnt see what they saw. Speaking of what they didnt see, mark, both construction workers didnt see how this confrontation actually began. That initial moment at the officers car. Does that give officer wilsons defense an opening do you think . Absolutely. Thats why i said all along that until we get his initial statement that was given, you really dont know what youve got here because i think that hes going to if he was bright, he knows enough to construct something so that he used the deadly force and hes going to claim that the reason he used deadly force is because he was threatened or there was some kind of force that was used against him. If hes brain dead and said no, i just overreacted and went chasing after this poor kid and executed him, you know, i dont understand why he wasnt arrested and charged already. He should have been arrested and charged already because theres more than enough given the seven eyewitness accounts that coming from an exprosecutor like you, you know that cops have a double standard when it comes to cops. Thats true. The bottom line is this is the universal signal of surrender. I think even if there was some sort of altercation at the car, lets assume that that is the case, once a fleeing felon turns around and surrenders, i think a defendant then cannot avail himself or herself of this fl fleeing felon rule. I just cant imagine that he doesnt get indicted. Sunny, you just said this is the universal symbol when hes up like this. But if the officer then testifies that, no, instead hes coming at him like this or to attack him or he perceived it in some other way, thats where youll have thats why we have lawsuits. Thats a big question and defenses. Thats why its going to be s so important that you have not one but two but seven eyewitnesses saying the same thing. Hands up. Some say was he falling toward him. Was he charging him. Thats the big question. His hands were in the air. And youre also going to have to take a look to see where the shell casings fell. They do wonderful things forensically with the shots that were fired, where the casings fell, the kind of ejection profile and things of that nature. Someone is going to go through and do a Detailed Analysis of all that. Very important stuff. Mark, sunny, thank you both. President obama today marking the somber anniversary of 9 11 twice, first with a moment of silence on the south lawn of the white house and then in arlington, virginia, at the annual 9 11 observance at the pentagon. Its now been 13 years. 13 years since the peace of an american morning was broken. 13 years since nearly 3,000 beautiful lives were taken from us including 125 men and women serving here at the pentagon. 13 years of moments they would have shared with us. 13 years of memories they would have made. Here once more we pray for the souls of those we remember, for you, their families, who loved them forever and for a nation thats been inspired by your example through determination to carry on, the resolve to live lives worthy of their memories. Jay lost his brother on 9 11 and pushed to make september 11th a national day of service and remembrance. Jay, your brother was one of the true heroes of 9 11 from what i understand. Tell me a little bit about his story. Thank you for saying that. He really was an extraordinary man. He was a partner at a law firm about a block and a half from ground zero. Thats where their offices were. When towers hit he raced into the south tower to save lives. For 20 years he was as volunteer firefighter and an emt. He did what firefighters do. He perished when the south tower collapsed. He wasnt in the towers when they were hit but went in to help. You have started an Organization Called my good deed to try and inspire people to remember 9 11 in a more positive way and do good work. How many people are marking today as a national day of service . I can tell you that last Year Research indicates that more than 47 Million People engage in some form of Charitable Service and good deeds on 9 11. We are hoping to exceed that this year. Its clearly become the largest day, annual day of charitable engagement in the history of the country. Why have people gravitated toward that . I think there are two reasons. We dont tell people what to do. They can do good deeds and service in anything theyre comfortable with in their comfort zone. People still 13 years later want to find something meaningful and appropriate to do to mark the day. When they come across this notion of doing something good for people or communities in need, it strikes home and its reflective of the way people responded right after the attacks. What do you do on this day . This morning i had the privilege of ringing the bell at the Stock Exchange and be with the Financial Community hit so far 13 years ago. Then i volunteered at a school in Lower East Side with 150 other people refurbishing the school so my day is filled with that. Ill always wind up down at the grounds of the Memorial Museum to pay my respects to glenn and all those who perished. Its so nice what youve done and so nice to have something positive come out of such a terrible day. I think so. You know, for people who want to find out more about it, go to 911day. Org. A great day to be part of a Community Marking the day in service. Nice to see you. Thank you. Did the nfl have the videotape of ray rice hitting his then fiance .
