This morning, police also revealed Michael Brown was a suspect in a strongarm robbery that happened about ten minutes before brown had his fatal encounter with that Police Officer. Now, authorities released this video just within this last hour that allegedly shows Michael Brown intimidating and pushing a man at this Convenience Store. We have also in the wake of these new pictures heard from Michael Browns family, and they are outraged. Its a systematic way to concoct a version of events and to taint this boys past rather than look at his future. Its just a way to try to taint of minds of those that are supporting this family. Youve got everybody around the world thats wondering what happened. Its a color blind curiosity. Blacks are wondering, hispanics are wondering, whites are wondering. And my point is, they are trying to distract away from that curiosity and now talk about his past as though that has something to do with him surrendering and being shot. To his point, the family saying this is basically character assassination. Two correspondents standing by for us in ferguson. Ana cabrera and ed lavin dara. Ana, you have watched the police chief from this morning, identifying this Police Officer, and then handing you the multiple pages of documents to sort of piece this all together. Do we have any idea what the police chief is about to reveal in a matter of minutes . Reporter well, i know that this afternoons press conference, he mentioned he would be holding to answer media questions. He didnt take any questions this morning when he revealed this new information. And so he said at that time ill have the time in the afternoon where you all can ask me questions. So i believe thats what we can expect at this press conference here in a matter of minutes. A question and answer opportunity with the police chief of ferguson. And, of course, there are more questions than answers still in this case in all. And among the questions that have arisen today, why just release the information about the robbery at this time and not the information about the actual shooting . Because now we know a time line of events leading up to that shooting incident. But we dont know anymore information about the Police Accounts of what exactly transpired between Michael Brown and the officer. But given the information we have today, we know that that encounter from the moment Darren Wilson made contact with Michael Brown to the moment another Police Officer arrived on scene was just three minutes. And at that time, when that other officer responded, Michael Brown had already been shot multiple times. And was lying on the ground. So it was a very swift encounter. Thats the new information that we learned of the shooting itself. But also why people here behind me have been angry since this press conference, because they believe the information that was revealed makes Michael Brown out to be a suspect versus a victim of a shooting, brooke. And that is worth the whole conversation in and of itself, well be hearing from Mark Lamont Hill in a matter of minutes. Heres what i want to know. If you are this officer, Darren Wilson and you hear over dispatch lets be precise. What exactly did this Police Officer know had happened at the Convenience Store before he responds . Reporter well, the 911 report was made that somebody had come into this Convenience Store. That person was identified as Michael Brown, along with here he is. Let me cut you off. Here is the police chief, thomas jackson. Doing okay, thank you. We ready . All right. So i gave you a whole bunch of information. First of all, thank you for coming out here. We wanted to do this in this environment so we could hear each other and get whatever information we have left out. So i gave you a lot of information this morning, wanted to give you a chance to let you go over it, and then we had some questions that have been coming in to our twitter and so forth. So we want to address some of those. There is a question about the timing of the release of the tape. So we have had this tape for a while. And, you know, we had to diligently review the information that was in the tape, determine if there was any other reason to keep it. Anybody else would be charged in a crime. And we had determined that that was not going to be the case. We got a lot of freedom of information requests for this tape. And at some point, it was just determined that we had to release it. We didnt have good cause, absent any other reason to not release it under foi. So and decided at the same time it wouldnt be prudent to release that information, which, you know, could be a little bit i dont know. We needed to release that at the same time we would release the name of the officer who was involved in the shooting. So that we could just keep open and give you all the information that we have. We have pretty much given you every bit of information that we have now. I dont think theres anything else that we have to give out. Regarding the second suspect who was in the store in the tape, dorian johnson, we determined that he did not commit a crime and was not complicit in the crime. And clarifying one of the other questions that came in quite a bit was on the role of two officers. Some were thinking it was the same officer who handled the robbery as the as was involved in the shooting. That is not the case. There were two separate officers. This robbery does not relate to the initial contact between the officer and Michael Brown. Having said that, ill take a few questions. Any information that would justify the use of deadly force, particularly outside the car. Okay. I understand that. These are questions that have to go to the investigation. And i dont think anything from the investigation is going to be released until its complete. [ inaudible question ] do we know if the officer who fired the deadly shots whether he knew mr. Brown was involved in this incident . Im confused on that. Whether he knew mr. Brown was involved in this incident. I can only go up to a certain point, and then its unreleased information in the investigation. And that certain point is the initial contact between the officer and mr. Brown was not related to the robbery. Is there paperwork that has to be filed as a matter of protocol describing the conditions under which a weapon is discharged . Theres a use of force report that we have. But the whole all the reports that are going to be written on this are going to be written by the st. Louis county Police Department. They have total control of the investigation. I imagine after the shooting. I dont have it in my possession. Everything belongs to the county. How do you respond to people who say this is not Michael Brown on the surveillance tape . I just think take a look at it. Just take a look at the tape. The socks were different compared to the pictures of the guy. Okay. And if its under investigation, why not what i did was was release the videotape to you, because i had to. Ive been sitting on it. But i too many people put in a request for that thing and i had to release that tape to you. Why did it have to be today . [ inaudible question ] the officers name appears to be a justification i understand that. But consider that if i just released that tape and didnt release the officers name, there would be similar questions. Im going read you a statement. Michael browns family is beyond outraged over the devious way the police chief has chosen to disseminate piecemeal information in a manner intended to assassinate the character of their son. Whats your response to that . My response to that is first my heart goes out to the family. I cant imagine what theyre going through. We have given you everything that we have now. And everything that we can give you. So thats from from our Police Department, we have you have everything weve got. There is nothing else that i can give you. At the timing i had a meeting scheduled with the family yesterday morning, representatives from the family came. The family did not. They hadnt had a chance to completely consult with their attorney. [ inaudible question ] it seems like youre only answering questions that demean the character of mike brown and rather than questions about the way you handled this case, why youre releasing information you said is under investigation. You just put more citizens in trouble by releasing that video that now they have to be protected, because their store and their business has been placed in media. And you say you are concerned about our safety, but it seems like youre concerned about our your officers safety . Im absolutely concerned about the safety of my community. [ inaudible question ] can you say whether he worked in another Police Department in this area before he came to you . Yes, he was a Police Officer for six years, two of those years with jennings and four years with us. How will he be protected now . I cant go into the security of the officer. Did you hire him, chief . Yes. Can you talk about his injuries . You mentioned so the officer involved in the shooting, was he aware of the robbery call . I dont know. I dont know what came out in his interview. I know his initial contact was not related to the robbery. It was related to youre telling us that youre telling us that when the officer stopped Michael Brown the first time, he was not aware that brown was a suspect in a robbery. No, he was just coming off of a sick case, which is why the ambulance was there so quickly. But yeah this is critical. Youre saying what are you saying, chief . Did he know that he was a suspect in a case or did he not know . No, he didnt. He was walking so it had nothing to do with the stop. So why did he stop him . At this point at this point, why did he stop Michael Brown . Because they were walking down the middle of the street, blocking traffic. That was it. Did you find evidence of the stolen merchandise on the body . Yes. Why did you put more citizens in harms way. Are there any other new questions . Do you have a photograph of this officer that you talked about . I was asked that. Im going to consult with my City Attorney before we do that and make sure thats all part of foi. I just got that question. [ inaudible question ] theyre doing a good job. They have been with us since the very beginning of this thing and i have every confidence in them. The st. Louis county Police Department is still here too. Last night it was said it was a deny immigration to your officer, the decision by the governor to bring in the state highway patrol. Do you agree with that . Thats political and im not going to get involved in that. What i will say, i know the officer in charge, have known him for years, and i have every confidence in him. [ inaudible question ]. 28. Thank you, chief. How many injuries to the officer . Can you just go into more detail about the swelling . Yes. There was some reports his eye may have been shut. The side of his face was swollen. This has already been released by the county Police Department. What i tell you about the incident, the shooting, is whats been released by the st. Louis county Police Department. So everything i say to you i cant say anything other than that. Can you describe this officer to us a little bit. Tell us a little bit more about him. What kind of details did he work . How would you describe his demeanor, did you have issues with him, was he related to racial profiling . No, he had no complaints. He was a gentle, quiet man. He was a distinguished officer. Could you describe him as best you can, please . He was a gentlemen. A quiet officer. And he was he is he has been an excellent officer for the Police Department. How has he been effective . Its devastating. Absolutely devastating. He never intended for any of this to happen. If he did not kill if the murderer the murder and the robbery did not come together, why did the video come out, and the robbery was not related . Because the press asked for it. Earlier in the day [ inaudible question ]. Pardon me . On twitter, there was information that he received an accommodation of Extraordinary Service in the line of duty. Anybody remember . Does anybody remember . I dont remember. But ill find out for you. One more question. Earlier in the day you said [ inaudible question ]. The description of a we cant hear you. Try it again. Earlier in the day you said the officer was responding because the description of a robbery suspect had gone out and that description matched Michael Brown. Now youre saying you only stopped Michael Brown because he was blocking traffic. No, no, no. I dont think i said he went there because of a robbery call. He was in the area. Following the robbery, because he was on a sick case. So the robbery had nothing to do with the stop, then why would you release the video of the robbery . Whats the explanation for the timing . Because you asked for it. You asked for it. I head it for as long as i could. But theres no connection the video and the stop. [ inaudible question ] we captain johnson and i just spoke about our communication breakdown and we i talked to chief belmar about this. We talked to the command post up there. But i did not personally call him. I should have done that. Im still in the county being in charge mode. Okay. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Appreciate your time. Okay. Here we go. So got a lot of new nuggets of information there from the Ferguson Police chief. I think the biggest headline in the wake of them releasing the video and the still photographs of who they say is Michael Brown and his friend, dorian johnson, who, he cleared up, will not be charged, was not complicit in the strongarm robbery. The headline that jumped out at me was the fact that this officer with Ferguson Police who the chief described as charming and a gentleman, and a good quiet man. The one who ultimately pulled the trigger, shot and killed the 18yearold unarmed man. That officer, according to the chief, did not know that Michael Brown was involved in this alleged robbery. The reporter asked the question, why did the officer stop mike brown. The answer, because he was walking down the middle of the street. Ana cabrera rejoins me. Don lemon as well live in ferguson. Ana, to you. That is what i heard. That is nugget number one out of that news conference. Didnt know that before. Reporter no. That was new information. This morning, during the press briefing, i think we all understood, according to the words that were said there, that the officer who ended up shooting Michael Brown had initially contacted him after hearing that there had been this strongarmed robbery and that the suspects were heading in the direction of the quick trip, where were standing, which is also in the direction where Michael Brown had been heading around the corner, a couple blocks away. Apparently he was headed to his grandmothers house. So at any trait rate, we thought there was a stronger relationship to the reason that the Police Officer stopped initially or confronted Michael Brown and what had happened just minutes earlier at this Convenience Store not far away. But now we know that they were completely separate. The only thing thats related about the two incidents is Michael Brown. Brooke. So the question you kept hearing shouted from reporter, so then why did you release the video in the Convenience Store. Why did you release the pictures. And the chief said, because you asked for it. Don lemon, to you. How is this news sitting with the community . Reporter it makes people think its even more fishy. Because, again, even if the press did ask for it, you did not have to release them together. When i was on earlier with my colleague, our colleague, carol costello, we were asking he really left a lot to the imagination when it comes to why Michael Brown was stopped and the connection between the Convenience Store. And then in the Police Report it says they canvassed the neighborhood. But it does go further and shows he went back because he did not run across the suspect. But the interesting thing is, in this Police Report, the same police, it talks about shots being fired and then it talks about Michael Brown and the incident that happened during the shooting. So listen, theres a lot of explaining to do here. There is some very controversial statements being made by Police Officers. Ones that need clarification and it doesnt help the situation here, brooke. Yeah. It doesnt at all, don lemon. I hear just the people behind you, they want their voices to be heard. My goodness, if youve been following this today, the twists and turns out of ferguson, missouri, let me just begin with what we just got from the Ferguson Police chief. So he essentially just said, thomas jackson, that when so weve seen the video, seen the pictures of 18yearold Michael Brown and his friend inside this Convenience Store. And there are allegations they had he, Michael Brown, had shoved the clerk here, the shorter looking man, Michael Brown the one in the khaki pants, the red shirt and the white cap. Now police say this was a strongarm robbery. What we just learned from the police chief is the officer, who ultimately shot and killed the unarmed 18yearold, did not even know about this robbery. Happened to be out in the neighborhood, and saw Michael Brown and his friend walking in the middle of the street. And that predicated police stopping them. So lets just begin with that, with my legal experts, defense attorney, bernstein, joining me in atlanta and cnn legal analyst, paul callan. El paul, just to you first. Thats the headline, what the police chief said, which brings a lot of people to ask, so then why release the video from inside the Convenience Store if the two could be separate. Well, the landscape is shifting on this case every hour or so. We get a new piece of evidence. So its very important not to make your mind up about anything until all of the evidence is in. But why is the tape relevant . Its relevant for this reason. The police chief says that the officer didnt know about the robbery in the store when he stopped Michael Brown. But Michael Brown knew about the robbery. And Michael Brown this is how a defense attorney for the Police Officer will approach it. The defense attorney will say, Michael Brown thought that he was being apprehended for robbery, and therefore, when the officer tried to put him in the car, for not being cooperative or whatever his reasoning was, brown immediately started to struggle, because he thought he was going down on a robbery in the second degree, a forcible robbery, very serious charge, under missouri law. That leads to a struggle in the police car. The gun is discharged. And then the suspect begins to flee. Now we have no idea what the officers version is as to what happened next. The weve heard one witness say that Michael Brown had his hands up in the air. Thats right. But im betting by the time this case is over the officer is going to say he thought there was a gun in the hand of Michael Brown or maybe he thought Michael Brown he felt something in his pocket during the struggle in the car. Im speculating here. But i know how i know how these cases play out. And we dont know what the final landscape of evidence will be in this case. So weve got to be careful as we evaluate. Agree. We have to be careful, 100 . Bj, whats your read on all of this . We need to be careful, but what weve just heard is literally a breaking truth of this case, which is the outrage of the community when they hear their police chief, the Ferguson Police chief say that that officer didnt know about the robbery. When they had released that tape all morning, its been all active on the news, on twitter, people that ive been conversing with, thinking they are directly linked. But that officer, not knowing that, is a huge new fact in terms of how this case is being handled, and peoples confidence in the police force when, quite candidly, that whole chief jacksons press conference was very awkward in how all this conversation went out. That doesnt provide confidence or people feeling like the ones who have been protesting that their community is looking out for them. And not just people. Let me interject, i have the statement from Michael Browns family and i think we cant read this enough. Michael browns family is beyond outraged at the devious way the police chief has chosen to disseminate piecemeal information in a manner to assassinate the character of their son. I mean, if youre mikel browns family, you are furious these pictures are out there in the first place. You know, the essential thing for a prosecutor and a Law Enforcement authority, keep credibility is to have a transparent, open investigation, particularly where a cop is accused of wrongdoing. And here it almost looks like the community has been suckerpunched along with the press by this piecemeal release of information. Its really, really surprising. And ive never seen it in a Police Investigation done before. Bj, if this comes down to obviously use of force, and we dont know we dont know the details as far as what happened, if there was a struggle with the car, if there was a struggle with the officers weapon, all we know is that there is an 18yearold unarmed man who was shot and killed, and how does how does one prove use of force . Well, its going to be looking at all the circumstances of the case and listening to the testimony. What the officer said, you know, all the things that hopefully the Justice Department obviously is looking into it more than just this Police Department. Because there is if its only ferguson Police Department looking at it, obviously, theres not the trust to believe that the right outcome is going to be there. So there are more facts to come out in terms of what will play out. But the bottom line here is, you know, beyond the incident and the familys absolutely understood outrage of the timing and the disparagement thats gone on to mischaracterize, when in the end, everybody just wants the truth. And thats not what has been playing out so far. We finally just heard a nugget of truth, finally, from this police chief when finding out this officer didnt know. Bj bernstein, thank you. His name is officer Darren Wilson. He is 28 years of age. He is white. Has six Years Experience on the police force, four with ferguson pd. And so we sent ed lavandera out, tried to knock on doors, learn more about this Police Officer. Ed, what did you find . Reporter you know, thats the key to this, trying to paint as best a picture as we can of the situation here. And i think thats helpful for all viewers here. But we have tried going to the neighborhood where Darren Wilson lives, and he lives in a suburb of st. Louis, about 25 miles away from here in ferguson. Many of the residents that we met there this afternoon were reluctant to seek with us. Very nervous about what the release of his name and knowing where he lives at this point might cause for the neighborhood. But we did, besides the people reluctant to talk, they did share interesting details. They said that in the days after the shooting, they noticed a Large Police Presence or a consistent Police Presence in their neighborhood as people were trying to piece together what exactly was going on. And then slowly they started getting a sense and understanding that this was indeed the officer, their neighbor, that was involved in this shooting. And then several people told us that either on tuesday or a couple days ago, that Darren Wilson left his neighborhood, left his home, and he hasnt been back since. So a great deal of anxiety and tension in that neighborhood among the neighbors that live around Darren Wilson, 25 miles away from here in the town of ferguson. Charming, quiet gentleman. These are all the different adjectives that the police chief used to describe this 28yearold officer who, again, the police chief pointed out had that bruise or some kind of swollen face from some an altercation with Michael Brown. Coming up next, well take a close look at the confrontation between Michael Brown and the Police Officer who shot and killed him. What happened on the afternoon . Brooke, for all of this new information evolving today, this is what it comes down to. North of st. Louis here in ferguson, around the middle of the day, on a normal street out here right in this area. Looks like this, if youre down at street level. Two different stories are being told about the specific events around this shooting. Heres what everyone agrees on. These two young men were walking down the street. The Police Officer came up in his car and they had an encounter with each other. Beyond that, very different views. The Police Version is that as this officer spoke to the two young men, brown confronted the officer, wouldnt even let him out of the car as he tried to open the door, then he attacked the officer, reaching through the window, and tried to take the officers gun. Only when brown started to flee the scene did the officer pursue him, shooting at him and killing him about 35 feet away. Although police say there was one shot fired at the vehicle at the time. Very different story, though, if you listen to what this witness who was with brown said, and other witnesses have said. They say that the officer used his car to block the men, and then opened his door into them, trying to force them back. In addition, they say that when he couldnt open the door, the officer grabbed brown through the window, yanking him toward him, threatening him, and thats when the first shot went off. Then as brown tried to run, the officer pursued him, still shooting. Brown turned, raised his hands and then he was shot and killed. It all would have taken only a matter of seconds. So what were looking at now, according to police, is Michael Brown in the white shirt and the red cap reaching on that store shelf for box after box of these cigars, which they allege he stole. Especially since we heard from the police chief saying that the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown wasnt even aware of that strong arm robbery in the first place. Do you, your read. To you. Reporter again, this is the most inconsistency ive seen in a story that we have covered in quite some time. Im looking at the video now, as we speak. Its interesting, brooke, because why would he go up to a counter if hes stealing something . I dont know. Its just weird. He appears to go up to the counter, hes talking to someone behind the counter. Hes got the cigars in his hand and then he sort of moves around and talks to the person and then bends down and puts them in a bag and then the other guy comes up after he leaves and points at him about stealing something. Its hard to really tell whats going on in the video. And as we were watching the video very closely, my producer and i now, if you look at the stills if you just look at the stills they released earlier, it looks a lot, you know worse than what it is. Listen, im not saying its right for anyone to steal anything. Or to push Anyone Around or to use violence. But if you look at the confrontation on the video, its basically a shove of like get away from me, man, get out of here. And its not like the punch that had been described by Police Officers or its not as dramatic as you see when its in still motion. Again, not right to use physical violence. But i dont know exactly what this videotape shows, because he actually goes up to someone at a counter, i dont know if he pays for it at the counter. We really dont know. It doesnt really say that much to me. The pushing and shoving shows a lot. But the second angle really, to me, doesnt say anything. Just looking at page 7 of the document drop from the police this morning, they used the words brown aggressively pulls they blanked out his name, the clerk, close to him, pushes him into a display rack. I think whether its a shove or punch or what have you, clearly the clerk felt threatened enough to call 911. I want to bring in Mark Lamont Hill and also senior media correspondent, Brian Stelter in d. C. Mark, i think i went immediately, once i saw this initial piece of video, and i went immediately to your twitter page. Because i know you have a strong voice and you have an opinion. And i was just curious your take on it. And i would think i would imagine your take remains now that were seeing more and more pieces of video that it is the criminalization of a victim. Yes. And we see this over and over and over again. Whenever theres particularly a black victim, we begin to delve into their life, into their behavior and put them on trial as opposed to the person who killed them. And on this case, even before i knew that there was no connection between the shoplifting charge and the cop stop, i still said these two things are not connected. This is not a capital offense. Even if he did commit a crime, that doesnt make you deserving of lethal force. In your hands are in the air, you shouldnt be shot. If paul callan were sitting here basically arguing, it does matter. He said it matters because with this Police Officer who did not know about the robbery, Michael Brown knew about the robbery. And that would predicate aggressive behavior, potentially, toward an officer, which could then predicate the defense of force. Thats thats a reasonable argument. Thats a bit of a leap and not necessarily consistent with the witness reports weve heard all week and its not consistent with where he was shot and how far he was from the police car. Right. So those facts that we have access to dont bear that out. But as an abstract idea, that could matter. I want to broaden this out. Brian stelter, to you, listen we, cnn, members of the media, play these videos and show these pictures. Its not like we just pop it up on the screen. There are very important people that sit in a room with the door closed really going over and churning whether or not we should play these kinds of items. Decisions are made. They are. And its important not to run them endlessly on a loop. It is important to run them. We do need to see it. But we also need to be aware of all the context. And i love the banner. It was on the bottom of the screen when we were showing the video. It says, Police Detail robbery but not shooting. That is where the focus still needs to be. If youre a cynic, you might suggest this press conference this morning happened and we heard all about the robbery. But we still havent heard the details of what happened with the shooting. And in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, when a young mans body laid on the ground there for hours and then was pushed into the back of an suv. If youre a cynic, you might think the police were trying to distract us from those questions. Yes. Just reading your tweets, talking to a number of different people, including a woman who lost her son in a legal chokehold from new york police 20 years ago and she too was rattling all these different names of unarmed young black men who have been killed. I cant apply this here because we dont know the facts. You talk to a lot of people and there is a pattern. By the way, brooke, i have to admit, i didnt know all of those names. I know many people in the Africanamerican Community do. That is a disconnect that i think hopefully is somewhat being improved right now. Absolutely. Just in the last few weeks with eric garner and renisha mcbride, the trial of her killer was a few weeks ago, we keep bringing names back out because we dont want people to forget them. Its a consistent pattern of unarmed black people getting killed through Law Enforcement. If they say give the police the benefit of the doubt, if this happens 24 hours, its hard to give people the benefit of the doubt. We need more facts and evidence but the evidence does not look good and the release of a tape coincidentally on the day where we get the officers name to me does nothing to undermine the argument that this is wrong. Apparently a lot of details havent come out according to the prosecuting attorney because they dont want to taken the witness statements. We dont know what led up to the four, five, six shots that ultimately took the life of Michael Brown. Marc lamont hill, thank you so much. Some were thinking it was the same officer who handled the robbery as was involved in the shooting. That is not the case. There were two separate officers. This robbery does not relate to the initial contact between the officer and Michael Brown. So again just to clarify, that was new information coming out within the past hour. That was the Ferguson Police chief saying the officer who killed Michael Brown did not know he was a suspect that afternoon in a robbery of a Convenience Store. How is the brown family responding . Well, their representative Attorney Ben Crump will be live on the lead with jake tapper at the top of the hour to respond to whats coming out of Ferguson Police. So a lot of questions about cameras. Police cameras. There is no police video to document the deadly confrontation between that Police Officer, Darren Wilson, and Michael Brown. So there is a growing call to put these dashcams on all Police Vehicles pop not only that, but to have all Police Officers wear these body cameras. Alina muchado shows us why. This is a police cam, this is is the camera, this is the recording device. Police in Daytona Beach say theyve already helped ease tensions in a few cases. This is video taken from two body cameras last september when Daytona Beach Police Officers knocked down a door and saw a man armed with a knife threatening a woman. Moments later [ gunshots ] officers fired several shots. An kz an they say saved the womans life. But thats not the end of the story. I arrived on the scene 15 minutes later. Theres at least 100 residents screaming at me as i get out of my car that my officers gunned down a guy laying in bed. The video Mike Chitwood says helped ease tensions because it showed what really happened. And what could have been a bad thing in the community, people start to look and say oh, i understand what happened now. Thats not what i was told. Thats not the case in ferguson, missouri, where the police chief says no video exists of the shooting death of 18yearold Michael Brown. It would make a huge difference. Whitwoods department is one of more than 1200 Law Enforcement agencies in the country using body cameras. The positive so much outweighs the negative. Daytona beach police have 75 cameras right now with plans to add 50 more by the end of the year. Each camera costs 950 and the department is paying 23,000 a year to store the video. Its a lot of money but chief chitwood says its money well spent. I can tell you just from the few incidents we had here how it has been just a godsend for us. Why is there so much resistance . Why doesnt every Police Department in the country have these body cams . Change is number one. Cops dont like change. Cost is number two. And another reason according to critics every single thing you say is going to be recorded, scrutinized and so forth. And i think that would put a hindrance on cops. It would create a problem with them in dealing with the everyday public. I feel that i can do my job a lot better no you. Officer dale kelly uses a body camera every day. This camera will protect me. We were with him as he responded to a call. His body camera engaged, capturing his drive to the scene and what he did once we arrived. Whats your name . When would you say the camera is most useful . I would say anytime that you come in contact with the public. We wanted to see for ourselves how they work. Right now, you are recording. Right now were recovereding everything you see, everything you hear is being captured by that camera. Thats correct. After a brief demonstration officer mike oteri helped me line it up.
