On the other side, democrats will be busy on saturday. Hillary clinton will hold several rallies ending with her husband, bill clinton and their daughter, chelsea. Bernie sanders is busy with a series of rallies all day. Our Senior Correspondent has the latest. A fight to the finish. Please, between now and monday night, think hard because the stakes are high. He meets with each party separately in different rooms. When he went into the meeting yesterday, it wasnt clear that the opposition group, the High Negotiating Committee were going to attend here. He said he does have assurances from them now and they will come here and they will negotiate, but the issues they wanted to address before they got here. They wanted humanitarian access on the ground to beleaguered communities, particularly women and children and wanted a cessation of the bombardment, the message from the International Community and the un to the agency and you can talk about it. Now they seem to be coming. Lets talk. There were discussions and negotiations about who would be at the talks. I want to ask specifically about the Syrian Government given that they have support from russia. What is their position now in these talks . Its not clear. They didnt make any comments leaving the talks so we dont know if they have come to the new agenda different than the one they came with two years ago in geneva known as geneva two and this is geneva three. Back then they were trying to get the talks up and running and blame the Syrian Government for only wanting to talk about the issue of terrorists after a couple of weeks. And a syrian state broadcast and following the meeting. What discussion there had been about identifying terrorists. That still remains an issue for the Syrian Government and for the russians. If thats going to be their only point on the agenda, it doesnt hold out a lot of hope. The Syrian Government has support from the Russian Air Force bombing on the ground and they are making gains in the south and north. When the military is making gains on the ground, often times it may not seem logical to get into talks. There a lot of talks right now. Why would they change their track . We can talk for hours about the ibt caseys there, but the bigger issue here and. What is the hope that they will accomplish . The Un Organization that tracks the movement is one of those. They are in close proximity to these talks. The International Migration yesterday released new statis c statistics that are shocking. More migrants died trying to leave turkey. 50 people tried to get there by boat. 254 across the mediterranean total this year. Europe is bulging at the seems both politically and socially. Zika has been linked to a dangerous disorder in newborns and there is no treatment available. We could see up to four million cases in the coming year. Today it was 4,000 cases of microsevaly, a neurological condition that prevents head and brain from developing. 51 have died and as a result women in brazil are being told not to get pregnant and they are saying to postpone travel to any of the countries where the virus is active. There more than 30 cases of zika in at least 12 less states. All of those were acquired during travel in affected areas. I would not be surprised if they had the zika virus. There is travel back and forth. There is no cases being transmitted to a person within the continental United States. The cdc warns that will change and reminds us there is no reason to panic. For the average american whether you are traveling or not, we dont think it is a big threat even if we have cases of local spread, we dont expect large outbreaks the way there is in brazil. It is a fast moving situation and every day for the next several days, there will be guidance and new numbers. I want to explain a little bit of the doctors optimism. She doesnt believe its widespread in part because the amenities here such as screens on windows, air conditioned buildings can help reduce the spread of a mosquitoborn illness. They saw it coming because there was an inner agency dispute going on for months and some of the more aggressive actors within that agency have been broadcasting publicly. Their feelings that the material should be treated as very sensitive even as other agencies in the government have said they dont have a basis to believe it to be classified. It seems like the more aggressive, louder and in fact more leakprone agencies involved in this review of her emails have gotten the upper hand here and we are disappointed in that and disagree with the finding and think these emails should be released as she called for a year ago when she provided them for the purpose of them being made public. She wants the public to have an opportunity to read and review them and learn about her tenure. If people saw what was in the emails, they would realize this is an example of overclassification where you have the gray area of different agencies and having different definitions of whats classified and whats not. Thats at issue here. Now to talk about Donald Trumps feud with fox news and megyn kelly over this weeks Republican Debate that put the spotlight on the news medias relationship with president ial candidates. Hillary clinton at the start of her campaign was not taking questions on the campaign trail. Thats correct. She sometimes had similar treatment of the media where the Foreign Press was concerned. She banned access for daily mail reporter to one of her trips to New Hampshire. She has been criticized for denying basic sourcing information and basic information and she has also just restricted access to her campaign in ways that you would not expect because donald trump does it so brazenly to the treatment of the press. It has been bad and the Huffington Post even mentioned long standing tensions between her and the press even though no recent press events have occurred. What about as far as the United States and we think of the u. S. And freedom of the press. I was reading that it may be true that our rankings have dropped in that. Yes, actually the United States has fallen 14 places since 2013 on Reporters Without Borders press freedom index. It ranks 49 out of 180 countries. Its really alarming for the country such as the United States that prides itself on the First Amendment to fall so hard so fast. It can be explained by the recent administrations treatment of journalistss lack of transparency and going after sources. For example, the Obama Administration prosecuted more whistle blowers than any administration combined. When you add the fact that journalists have been arrested in baltimore and ferguson. The Health Minster said this national was diagnosed with zika and quick to report his symptoms to health officials. There is no vaccine or treatment that spread to at least 24 countries. It raised deep concern in medical circles and with world leaders. Zika is no longer just a brazilian issue. It hit other countries. We are seeing the possibility of a threat to public health. We do not have experience in this. We cannot compare to anything that happened and it is still being studied. Many things are to be discover and we need a clearer link between this mosquito and the disease. The president went further by saying her country is losing the battle against the zika virus. She is calling on everyone to unite against mosquitos carrying the disease. One research lab is trying to do just that. Here in the state we are the story. Pandemic sweeping across the americas. More babies have been born with birth defects than anywhere else. The only mosquito that is known to transmit the virus is abundant. Another Research Center right here is investigating whether a much more common mosquito can be transmitting the virus. Its 20 times more common. We had the opportunity chat with the doctor at the Research Center. Take a listen to what she told us. Here we have both species. This is the most common mosquito in america. Including the United States and canada . Including the United States and canada. Its a factor of many things like west nile virus, japanese encephalitis. This wouldnt be the first time it transmits a disease . Exactly. Its a factor of other viruses. Why not zika . If the Research Shows this mosquito can carry the virus, the potential is huge to spread much more quickly and much further than initially anticipated. Even the doctor herself admits there no conclusions reached yet. The findings will only be in in about a month and she will require months of field work. Cnn, brazil. A great deal of research is being done on this. In europe, one scientist shows how he genetically modified mosquitos to fight the disease like zika. They look like glowing glob uls. They represent mosquitoborn disease. The virus known as zika continues to spread, linked to thousands of babies born with shrunken brains. They dont know what to do about it. There is no vaccine and fumigation is limited. A company here in england saying the key to solving the problem is more mosquitos like these. Here at the labs, they have been genetically modified to produce offspring that die before growing into adults. I wanted to show you the males. We only release the males as they dont bite. Its the female mosquitos that bite. They transmit the disease. As you can see, this is only the males. I can put my hand in without worrying about getting bitten. Its death by sex. Once the je in theically modified male mates, he passes on the gene and the larva are unable to grow into adults. For tracking purposes, they glow in the dark. Here we can see six of these mosquitos. This is a normal light. If i turn down the white light you can see the ones at the top, there is a glow around the eye. That glow is due to the genetic marker. Why is that important . We look at the proportion we get back from the field and see what proportion have the gene which means they wont develop to adults. Based on that raceio, we can adjust the release rate of the males. The tracking shows promising results. One study done in the brazilian city showed a reduction in mosquito larva compared to a nontreated area. The spread of zika could spread into a global pandemic.
