Announcement . I should say first was a radio host. It within nano seconds someone senior in the Romney Campaign pushed a button and i got it as well. I would have to say that in the last moments before this Conference Call there was chatter back and forth that romney wasnt going to do it. If you talk to funders a week or so ago and even as late as yesterday, i was told hes in. Hes totally in. I think what happened was there was a big meeting with romney senior advisers. They laid it all out for him. Pros and cons. This is a man who wants to be president of the United States. The polling looks great. The problem i think they had was with the funders who had gone to other places. Those important people who can raise hundreds of thousands of dollars by bundling money together. They all had gone to other places. Staff was disappearing. Romneys chief adviser in iowa his chief staffer, had gone to jeb bushs staff. I think when he looked at the metrics of all of this he decided that in the end, he wouldnt be able to make as good a go of it as he would like so he is stepping back. I might add they were not sort of saying jeb bush is a great candidate and if jeb gets in we wont. Thats the way they were in september. But as of a week or two ago or even a couple days ago, they were all in. I think when they had this meeting and they laid it all out for him, i think thats when he made his decision. Thats the most interesting part jake. It seemed almost until yesterday that he was running. The speech in mississippi. All of the unanimous statements coming out from his aides and advisers were comparing him to Hillary Clinton basically making him hold with me one second. Lets listen to some of this call jake and then i want to get your take on it. In addition state political leaders from several early primary states are on the line and here in new york city and on the phone are people who have been helping me think through how to build a new team and supporters from the past all kind enough to volunteer their time during this deliberation stage. After putting considerable thought into making another run for president , ive decided its best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee. First, im convinced that with the help of the people on this call we could win the nomination. Our finance calls made it clear we would have enough funding to be more than competitive and with few exceptions our Political Leadership is ready and enthusiastic about a new race. The reaction of Republican Voters across the country was most surprising and heartening. I know that early poll numbers move up and down great deal during the campaign but we would have no doubt started in a strong position. One poll out just today shows me gaining support and leading the next closest contender by two to one and leading in all of the four early states. Im convinced that we could win the nomination. I fully realize it would have been a difficult task and a hard fight. I also believe with the message of making the world safer, providing opportunity for every american regardless of the neighborhood they live in and working to break the grip of poverty, i would have the best chance of beating the eventual democratic nominee but thats before the other contenders have had the opportunity to take their message to the voters. I believe that one of our next generation of Republican Leaders, one who may not be as well known as i am today one who has not yet taken their message across the country, one who is just getting started, may well emerge as being better able to defeat the democrat nominee. In fact i expect and hope that to be the case. I feel that its critical that america elect a conservative leader to become our next president. You know that i wanted to be that president. I do not want to make it more difficult for someone else to emerge who may have a better chance of becoming that president. You cant imagine how hard it is for ann and me to step aside especially knowing of your support and the support of so many people across the country. We believe its best for the part and the nation. Ive been asked and will certainly be asked again if there are any circumstances whatsoever that might develop that could change my mind. That seems unlikely. Accordingly, im not organizing a pac or taking donations. Im not hiring a campaign team. I encourage all of you on this call to stay engaged in the process of selecting a republican candidate for president. Sign up for a campaign on those you believe will be your best nominee. I believe a republican winning back the white house is essential for our country and ill do whatever i can to make that happen. So to all my supporters, friends and family who worked tirelessly and loyally to support my campaigns in the past ann and i will be deeply appreciative. Its a tribute to your patriotism patriotism. Are you being kind . Im being kind. I dont know that his potential rivals the people who are going to run for president , jeb bush, ted cruz rand Paul Chris Christie i dont know that they will be as kind although theres no sense in publicly bashing him. People seem confused by the statement. The headline is hes not running. But this speech his remarks, are full of caveats. I could win. One poll out just today shows me gaining support and leading the next closest contender by nearly two to one. These are not the kind of things one says when they announce theyre not going to run. I would have the best chance of beating the nominee. This is the one that kills me. That seems unlikely. Theres a thing in politics. You ask me jake are you ever going to run for president . If asked, i will not serve. I will run for president. A clear way to give a denial. Thats never going to happen. Mitt romney puts out hypothetical. Ive been asked if there are any circumstances whatsoever that might develop that could change my mind. Instead of saying no im not running. There are many great candidates and i will be supporting one of them. He says that seems unlikely. Thats not closing the door. Whats the rationale . What is the rationale behind making this statement with quite a bit of fanfare, if you will . Hes announcing hes not running for president but just in case the party implodes and there is some desire for him to come in and save the day, the white knight on the stallion that remains a possibility. The names he doesnt mention any of his rivals. He doesnt say there are so many great republicans that could run. Would you expect him to say that . Not necessarily. Then it becomes a contest of who didnt you name. I just dont understand why one would say im not running although clearly i could beat the democrat. I have the best chance of beating the democrat. The nicest thing he says is that the next generation of Republican Leaders who has not yet gone out and given their message, that person may well emerge as being better able to defeat the democrat nominee and i expect and hope that to be the case. Thats the strongest statement he gives for somebody else. Thats the strongest endorsement for whoever emerges, the next class of candidates. Peter, join in on this. Your initial reaction has to be who does this help and you would think this helps jeb bush. I agree with jakes assessment 100 this is a really ambivalent statement. Theres a bit of a concrete reason here though and gloria touched on this. He had a call last week in a meeting in boston with a number of his advisers. Ann romney has been pushing romney to run. Romney is uncomfortable with seeing his place in the party diminish by jeb bush and others who are making calls to donors et cetera. Theres a loyal crew of advisers in boston who have been with romney for a long time urging him to run. There are many other close advisers who are saying you dont have this. This isnt yours for the taking and they are backing that up with information from the field. Romney said in that statement he had field staff and there was wide support from his former campaign staffers. Thats actually not true. Thats a big reason that romney is backing away from this. One of the biggest things that happened in this early stage of the republican race so far, gloria talked about this one of romneys longtime advisers going back to his First Campaign as governor for massachusetts decided yesterday to go work for jeb bush. One of romneys most loyal people in the Republican Party went to work for jeb bush. As much as romney thinks that he deserves to be president jeb has owned the early stages of this campaign behind the scenes and invisible primary. The fact that one of romneys closest people went to work for jeb was probably one more nail in the coffin for people in his ear saying as much as you want this and want to be president , you have to think about your legacy and the fact that you could not only lose the republican primary, you could get completely dominated in the republican primary. That would be an embarrassment. Chris, join in on this too. Does this come down to often in politics to money. A lot of donors pressureing him to say you need to make a decision because there are many big candidates looking to us for support at this point. There is a lot of overlap between mitt romney donors and potential jeb bush donors so that frees up a bit not just for jeb bush. We need to bring new jersey governor Chris Christie into the picture and Chris Christie can have more space to look for those donors as well. And i think that this makes the field a lot more wide open. Certainly i honestly think more interesting because it allows more voices to come in and were in the period of this invisible primary period or this donor primary period and competition is going to be all the more fierce because folks wont assume that its just being sucked up by jeb and mitt. Gloria jump in. The interesting thing about this statement is romney didnt come out and endorse anybody. Its clear in talking to folks that are close to him, he didnt think jeb bush was going to be a particularly strong candidate. That jeb bush had not been as one put it to me to the super bowl before. That he didnt have the experience of running. He was going to be attacked on his ties to wall street and mitt romney of course had been vetted on that already and been through that with bane capital. He didnt come out and say im for jeb or im for christie. I think were in a funny way back to where we were this fall when romney advisers were saying he would be as jake pointed out, the white knight. If it all fell apart and the field couldnt get it together and republicans couldnt get behind one candidate, he would come in and rescue the party. In the real world, thats not the way things work. Its clear from reading this statement and parsing this statement that mitt romney is still up for that if the party would come to him. I think thats really unlikely though. Quick final point. One final point is democratic primary race looks to be one of the least competitive in modern history should Hillary Clinton run and i know that romney from talking to advisers of his is very concerned about how nasty the republican race is going to be and its very very likely that one of the many factors in his decision is he didnt want to be part of it. He didnt want to be attacked and didnt want to do the attacking. Mitt romney not running. That announcement coming just a few minutes ago. Guys, thanks so much. Mitt and ann romney are two of the nicest people i ever met anywhere in political life. I respect his decision. Well see what it means. Does this announcement how does it change your calculation . Not at all. Its just one less good person to choose from. The way i look at it mitt romney has a lot to offer the country and the Republican Party. There are other people out there too and i want to try to be one of those. Whether it works for me i dont know. Ill look at this. Security through strength. Com and the theme is that for america to be secure, we need to be strong and have a Strong Military and get our act together when it comes to dealing with ready caladical islam. Retirement security and passing on the American Dream is what i want to talk about. Securing america. Why do you want to jump into this race . I read additionally on top of those points you made that youre going to make a decision by the end of april. As jake was just pointing out, its going to be a nasty republican primary. Why would you want to get into that . Well for the last 13 years men and women have been leaving home to go fight a war that has been very tough on military families. I think i have the ability to be a good commander in chief and god knows we need one right now. So any sacrifice i have to make in terms of being beat up or raising money or traveling, pales in comparison to what those who have been fighting this war has gone through so theyre my inspiration. Your close friend john mccain has been joking recently that youre his illegitimate son but a very close friend of yours. Has he given you any advise on how to run for president . In all seriousness, the fact that john mccain given who he is and what hes done for our country and depth of knowledge on how to secure america would suggest that i should be commander in chief, president of the United States quite frankly one of the highlights of my life and it means a great deal to me for him to say that. Its a dangerous decision. I think its an unjustified and quite frankly, its going to come back to haunt us. To emergency them not going back to the fight at the end of the year is really impossible for me to understand because they will. Senator, take it all into consideration. Do you think it was a poor decision a bad decision by the president. We talked about this when this decision was made. When you take it into consideration, the life potentially of a u. S. Soldier and then the security concerns on balance of releasing these five detainees, youre talking about running for president. Would you have made this decision as president . Absolutely not. What would you say to Bowe Bergdahls family then . I would say this to every family not just his family. No military member should expect the commander in chief to undercut the war effort, hostilities are not over. The take a look at your television and what happened today. The war is still ongoing in afghanistan. These five people are going to go back to the battle. Its an affront to all of the afghans fighting to change their country and its a front to the americans who have served. Its dangerous to those who are in place and changes whats going on on the ground. I would tell my family if something happened to me do not release five of the people who collaborated with al qaeda to attack our nation for my benefit. This is a bad decision. If he had been a medal of honor winner i would not have done this. It undercuts the war effort and puts our nation at risk. Senator, i always appreciate your honesty. I want to get your honest take on this finally so im not taking too much more of your time. Just yesterday those protests in the Senate Armed Services committee, were you in the committee yesterday . No i missed that part of it. I saw it on television. I want to ask you about that. These protesters this is a hearing including Henry Kissinger and protesters disrupted the beginning of the hearing. At one point the now chairman senator mccain, your friend said this. I have been a member of this committee for many years, and i have never seen anything as disgraceful and outrageous and despicable as the last demonstration that just took place you know youre going to have to shut up or im going to have you arrested. Get out of here you low life scum. Disruptive no doubt. These protest happen often in committee hearings. Is it appropriate for a United States senator to speak like that to protesters in ag . All i can say freedom allows people to have their say but responsibility should attach itself to freedom because without responsibility freedom leads to chaos. I think senator mccain is speaking for a lot of americans who found what happened there to be out of line. The protesters have a right to have their say, but they dont have a right to threaten a 92yearold distinguished statesman or any other american who is trying to have their say. At this hour jurors are hearing testimony in the murder trial of former nfl star Aaron Hernandez. A trial thats taking place just days before his former team the new England Patriots will take the field for the super bowl. Earlier today we heard from the man who called 911 after a jogger found odin lloyds body. Hes the man hernandez is accused of killing. I saw an africanamerican male that i guess between 25 and 35 years old lying on his back. He was stiff and motionless and there were flies flying in and out of his nostrils. Hernandezs defense team says he had no motive for murdering his once friend odin lloyd. A semipro Football Player who was dating hernandezs fiance sister. In Opening Statements the defense said he was targeted by prosecutors because of his fame. Joining me now live from the trial in fall river, massachusetts, alexandra field. Our legal analyst, sunny hostin. Whats the focus so far in the courtroom . Reporter theyve been calling in people who were at the crime scene at the time odin lloyds body was still there. We know that part of the prosecutions case has to do with a piece of evidence they say is Aaron Hernandezs sneaker print they found at the crime scene. They call in the jogger that first found the body. Two people that came to help by calling 911. One of the first responders. They are having those people testify about what kind of shoes they were wearing and shoe prints those shoes would have left there. At the same time, the defense is taking an opportunity when able to question these witnesses to try to advance their theory was that there was shoddy police work here. They ask questions about how evidence may have handled and what kind of weather conditions happened at the time including rain. They are asking questions about what kind of area this was. They are trying to establish whether or not this was a secluded area and one interesting point here kate at one point Defense Attorneys asked a witness if he recalled telling police at a certain point that he had heard about a black suv in the area while the body was still there back in june of 2013. First we heard about this black suv. Well have to see if we hear more about that from prosecution or defense now. It continues at this very moment. Thanks so much. Stick with us. Sunny is here with us talking about some of the evidence but theres other evidence that we could say prosecution kind of laid out in Opening Statements. A marijuana blunt. Dna on shell casings and this footprint. Whats happening . You know this is a very difficult case for the prosecution. Its a circumstantial case and jurors are uncomfortable with that especially in a firstdegree murder case. Jurors want to see forensics. They want to see the murder weapon. They want fingerprints on the murder weapon. They want a confession. They want an eyewitness. The prosecution has none of that here and they also have a celebrity defendant. I think its going to be up to the prosecution to really try to bring those jurors back at the scene and thats what were seeing. Were seeing testimony of people that saw his body. They are also trying to make him be very present in the courtroom and you want to do that as a prosecutor. You want the victim to be present. You want these jurors to know this was a person who was loved. This was a brother. This was a son to someone. Theyve done a good job with that. Is that the thinking behind potential behind his girlfriend maybe having to take the stand and his mother . Theres a conversation of that as well. Odin lloyd were talking about. Absolutely. Weve already seen it when you hear witnesses say i saw flies coming out of his nostrils. That piece of evidence made his mother dry, odin lloyds mother cry, but jurors are affected when they hear that. Prosecution will have to do more of that. Its a circumstantial case. You have the defense saying he has no motive. He had his whole life in front of him. Aaron hernandez now. He had no motive. That could resonate with a lot of people. Im struggling with that myself. People are talking over dinner and talking about this case. Why would he do this . 12. 5 million guaranteed. A 40 Million Contract in total. He had a fiance. A child. You know the patriots are in the super bowl. People really are going to think what is the motive . As a prosecutor you dont have to prove motive. Its not the element of the crime. What juror isnt thinking why would he kill his friend which is what the defense is playing up hard. The defense said it probably over 10 15 times during opening statement. He said odin lloyd was Aaron Hernandezs friend. Why would he kill him . Thats the lingering question. What can he expect for the rest of the day . Reporter this is a half day for court here. The session will end around 1 00. We know that odin lloyds girlfriend is on the prosecutions witness list. She could be called to testify next. His mother may now testify next week. They are appealing to these emotions that sunny is talking about. We saw closeups of odin lloyds Bullet Wounds in court. The mother walked out of the courtroom at that point. I should also point out, weve seen Aaron Hernandezs brother. Hes back in court today sitting right behind aaron. We have not seen his mother or his fiance here today. Well continue to follow it. Just into cnn, governor jeb bush just released a statement obtained by cnn released on his Facebook Page regarding the announcement by mitt romney that mitt romney has said this morning he will not be pursuing a third run for the white house. In part the statement from governor jeb bush says mitt is a patriot and i join many in hoping his days of serving our nation and our party are not over and he says that he and his wife wish mitt and ann and their entire family the very best. You have so many different agencies. So many potential risks. Just managing different pieces local, state, federal and in some instances International Becomes the biggest challenge. An event like the super bowl they had a long runway and knew when it was so that planning has been going on. I never promise perfect security but as far as these things go theres been tremendous planning so people are protected and they do enjoy themselves at the event. To the point you just made i did read that you said that there is no such thing as perfect security when it comes to an event like this. Should that concern folks . Only if they live in a world if which they think theres anything like perfect security. Theres not. We have too many events and too many people and so we take a certain amount of risk. One area that Public Safety does focus on that doesnt get enough attention is assuming something bad happens and we can think of things like isis or just a generator going off, how do you limit the consequences of that bad thing happening . We saw the successes after the Boston Marathon that while there was a bad thing, very bad thing that happened it was the reaction of Public Safety that really brought the city together gave people a sense of grip. When you think of the super bowl blackout a couple years ago, the blackout bowl i know people hated that but on the other hand you look at it and only half of the stadium went in darkness. The other half was in lightness. Thats because they had systems in place in which the generator would sort of cut off massive darkness. Those are ways security planners think about protecting the most number of people given that the risk that there will be risks that we both imagine and then ones we dont think about right now. You do in the end on the security front you have to balance the need for security at these events and the inconvenience for anyone who will attend and wants to watch it because it would be a huge headache to lock down a stadium like that. But why are we there, the fans . If theres so much outrage over scandals why do we keep watching . The fact is we do. We like it. The game, at least. Lets talk about this and more with ray lewis who led the Baltimore Ravens to two super bowl championships during his 17 seasons in the league. These days hes an espn analyst and has a new reality show called coaching bad. I want to talk about the super bowl and the super scandals but first, lets talk about this tv show. This is a reality show that youve got, youre taking on the angriest coaches in sports across the country. Why are you doing this . I watched the trailer and theyre pretty scary. Yeah im doing it because ive been in sports my entire life and one of the things that were finding is a real epidemic america is bad coaching. And its going so bad to where were affecting kids to where kids im a father. My kids are beautiful and i dont want my kids treated no differently than the way i treat them. And so this whole show concept takes the we took nine of the angriest coaches and put them in remote places in los angeles. We went through so many different exercises of working with each coach trying to get to the bottom line of what these anger issues are all about. Whats ironic is when we started getting into why they yell and why they curse and why they hit kids, the thing i found out the most is going back in most abuse cultures past most of them have been mistreated or has mistreated people in their past. This is something that theyve been dealing with for years. And a lot of parents dont know the extent to how much time or who were letting our kids spend time with. When we sat down to figure out this show and what we wanted to do with this show this hit in my heart with me. Ive been a part of this time of program and system my whole life. Its relationshipbuilding. Its telling people how to deal with people. It is a fascinating concept for a show and also an important maybe Public Service that youre doing for sports across the country. Ill be tuning into that. But if we can, going from the playing off the name of your show to a bad year for the nfl, youve been watching all this. Youve been speaking out about all this. I watch you all the time on espn. Youve made headlines yourself in some of the comments youve made, some about the new England Patriots. Do you think in light of the deflated football controversy, do you think that means a tainted win for the patriots . Ill say it a million time from my heart. If thats why i want everybody to make sure my comments are what they are because im not afraid to say it. But if this is true then weve found a bad place in sports if this is true. Thats why i use the word if because you get into all the speculation and you dont know how the story is fab rated. If this comes out as true that this thpd and then we let a team go on to the super bowl you talk about the nfl and how the players are treated and the rules that are in place, this is the integrity side of the game now. Now youre tapping into the integrity of this is how youve got to go about your way to get wins in the National Football league. And once again, if thats true then we have taken a back page to what we have created and what the forefathers have created with this game. Ray, thank you for your time.
