This year alone, 1 tlourks 500 people have been killed in violence. This latest atrocity, the abduction, and now as you heard, the leader supposed leader of the group, abu backar saying not only has he abducted these girls, hes going to sell them. These parents sent them to school, they were in the dorms sleeping in the middle of the night. The armed assailants stormed into the classroom, woke the girls up, shootout with security guards, carted them away into the forest after setting fire to the school. We had suspected for quite some time they may have been trafficked into neighboring chad, and now for the parents, this cant be if you thought it couldnt get any worse for them, it just has. Because their worst fears are being realized, carol. So whats the point . What do they want . Why do they hate these girls . Reporter well, boca haram means western education is forbidden, a sin in the local house of language. They are against anything western. And women getting an education is an anathema to them. And also whats particularly troubling and sad about this story, where these girls were taken, carol, is one of the poorest regions in nigeria and one of the least educated. These are parents who sent their kids to school to get an education, to better their lives, in a country, quite frankly, is challenging for everybody. And to find out one morning when you wake up that your child has been abducted, i dont think any parent can imagine that. And thats what this story is about. Its about the taking of these girls in the dead of night, and a military and government who so far has been ineffective in bringing these girls home. In three weeks, we just yesterday only had statement and remarks made by the president on camera. So people that we spoke to, the families we spoke to on the ground are angry, but more importantly, heartbroken and are in agony, carol. Vladimir duthiers, thank you. The ceo of target is out, left the Company Effective immediately. And the wake of last years massive data breach, where the credit card numbers and personal information from as many as 110 million customers were stolen. Temperature possibly the biggest hack of its kind in history. Poppy harlow is here to tell us more. Good morning. Good morning. This is a very big deal. You sat down and interviewed him. Youre one of the few people who has interviewed this ceo, a man who has been at the company for 35 years. This is a minnesotabased huge company, more than 100 they think 110 Million People affected by this hack that youll remember happened over that black friday weekend, thanksgiving. You know, what happened here at target, the fallout of this was extensive. Not only a Public Relations fallout, you had their earnings hit, significantly. It cost target about 61 million. They saw fewer people coming in over that key holiday season, because we found out about this between thanksgiving and christmas. So whats interesting in this release that just came out is that the company is not saying this is tied to the breach. Theyre saying, quote, now is the right time for new leadership at target. That coming from the ceo, saying this came after extensive talks with the board. But theyre not tying this directly to the data breach. However, this was a massive data breach, hurt them from a pr standpoint, it affected how many people have come into their stores. It cost them millions of dollars, and it hurt their earnings. One word about this ceo. He was a man of few words. He wasnt exactly the most effusive ceo in the world. So when that hit them, when that controversy hit them, he should have been out there like cheerleading target. But that never really happened. Very interesting you say that. I reached out to target pretty much every week or every other week after this. Still up until last week for an interview with them to come on and talk to us and they said, you know, not right now. Were not doing that. He did one interview with the business network, cnbc. But i think, you know, a lot of people may have wanted to hear more. Because this is a very frontfacing consumerfacing company. Im from minneapolis, minnesota. This is the minnesota company. You know, but target has made changes to their credit. They have made changes to protect customers. We also know they gave customers that were affected if they wanted it a free year of credit monitoring. They have come out and announced theyre changing their credit cards to chip and pinbased credit cards, the first major u. S. Retailer to do this. And also to be fair, this is one of the biggest if not the biggest data breach, but this has affected other major consumerfacing companies. This, i think, carol, is the new reality of technology and what we face in retail and other companies when youre using your credit card or your debit card, and companies, i think, still trying to figure out how to best protect consumers. But a major headline this monday morning, ceo of target, out. Thanks. It was supposed to be a day of clowns and high wire acts at ringlinging brothers barnum and baileys circus until a stunt went wrong. I want to warn you, the video youre about to see is disturbing. All hanging by their hair, some 25 feet in the air in a stunt called the human chandelier. Suddenly plummeted to the ground in the middle of the show. It was such a surprise, some witnesses actually thought it was part of the act until the music stopped. And people realized the horrifying scene they just witnessed. Another performer on the ground and two other people were hurt. And just a few minutes, ill be joined by a woman who shot that frightening video. But first, cnns alexandra field has more on the accident. Reporter a circus act goes horribly wrong. Eight acrobats suspended by their hair more than two stories above ground suddenly plunge when the apparatus holding them fails. 11 people were injured, 1 critically. At this point, it doesnt appear to be lifethreatening. But there are serious injuries from that height and fall. Reporter the fall, a frightening sight for the thousands of spectators, including many children. Everybody didnt realize at first it was an accident. Thought it might be part of the show. But then soon realized it was an accident. The whole metal came on top of everybody. It was scary. Reporter promotional video shows what the student is supposed to look like, one of the highlights of ringling brothers and barnum and baileys legend show. Theyre working with local and National Officials to make sure this doesnt happen again. We will do whatever it takes to come to the bottom of this. Make sure that when this show goes to perform again, that its safe. Reporter and a spokesman for the circus say they still dont know what caused this accident, that failure you saw in that dramatic video. But they did immediately cancel shows yesterday and now todays shows as well, carol. I was just going to ask that. The show must go on and all of that, but a lot of work to do before the show can go on. A lot of investigating, i assume. Osha, local authorities are investigating. A spokesman for the circus says they are participating. They tell us they personally inspect their equipment every time its delivered to a new arena so when it arrived in providence, they would have looked at it. They say safety is the utmost priority here, but the question is, what happened . I cant imagine hanging by my hair anyway. I have new admiration for this extra peas artist. Thank you very much, alexandra fie field. Terrifying moments for passengers on a Us Airways Flight. A patch of severe turbulence moments after takeoff forced the pilot to turn the plane around yesterday. Six people were hurt, including two flight attendants. One passenger said it felt like a drop at the bottom of a roller coaster. She said shoes and apples, all sorts of things went flying through the air. Here is the control tower moments after the pilot called for help. Hitting 70. Is this going to be a medical emergency . Do we have to call an ambulance and can you give me the genders of who this hurt . The airline says the fasten seatbelt sign was on at the time. A passenger told cnns new day what happened. All of a sudden, the airplane, you know, dropped. Obviously hit a strong down draft. The airplane, you know, kind of rotated a little bit. And everybody kind of let out a collective holy crap, what was that. It had been bumpy. It was pretty much slight turbulence, choppy turbulence the whole flight. And frankly, he was surprised to hear that anybody was injured, because i dont know who would have had their seatbelt off. Some people apparently did, though. Rene marsh, live in washington. Its 17,000 feet this happened. So everybody should have had their seatbelts on. Right. And that audio you played just a little while ago, carol, that was as they were making that emergency landing, because of all of this. I can tell you, it was a heartpounding seconds for the 265 people on board Us Airways Flight 735. 17,000 feet in the air, right above delaware, when all of a sudden a violate midair shakeup. Listen to the passengers. Shoes were flying, cell phones flying, people screaming. And it was very, very, very scary. Reporter a frightening scene on a Us Airways Flight as passengers were jolted around, injuring six people, sending five, including two flight attendants, to the hospital. I thought we were going down. Really did. Reporter the orlandobound flight hit severe turbulence shortly after taking off from Philadelphia International airport. Passengers say the drop in altitude came out of nowhere. We were going, and then all of a sudden there was just like a drop like youre going down the bottom of a roller coaster and things just flew up in the air. Reporter one passenger described seeing a woman flying out of her seat. But i saw the lady three rows in front of me. She bashed her head like all the way up to the plastic, and to describe it, the plastic was broken. Reporter this photo shows cracks in another overhead compartment. After a passenger crashed into it. It was crazy experience. Just up in the air, lifted out of our seats. Reporter so carol, pilots depend on other pilots ahead to report turbulence. There were some reports of light turbulence in this area, but nothing as severe as what they actually ran into. We do know that turbulence injuries, theyre pretty common when it comes to commercial aviation, roughly 32 every year, according to the faa. But injuries are virtually nonexistent if if, if, if, you are wearing your seatbelt. So thats the important thing. The other thing, i just want you to calm people down. Because turbulence is like hitting a speed bump in the sky, vertical air, right . You hit vertical air, and the plane bumps. Is there any danger of the plane actually coming apart when that happens . Reporter no. The planes are built to handle turbulence. You know, if you talk to any pilot, they will say this comes with the territory. Now, severe turbulence, thats more rare. But when we talk about turbulence, you dont have to worry about the plane crashing. Youre going to be safe. The only problem is if youre Walking Around, youre not in your seat, youre not you dont have your seatbelt on. Thats when you start to see the injuries. And i can tell you, when you look at the injuries, most of them tend to be the flight crew, because theyre up Walking Around the cabin. So the takeaway here is always have that seatbelt on. To ensure that you dont get hurt in that instance. Will do. Rene marsh, many thanks. Coming up in the newsroom, dry winds fueling wildfires in oklahoma. Right now, firefighters are trying to contain a fastmoving wildfire in guthrie, oklahoma. Authorities say at least one person was killed after refusing to evacuate his home. The fire started as a controlled burn but dry temperatures and high winds fueled the fire. At least 20 homes have been destroyed and officials warn many, many more could be at risk. Were joined on the phone by fire chief eric harlow. Hi, chief. Morning. Good morning. Can you bring us up you to date on the latest . Well, really not a whole lot of change from last night. Were still looking in the area of 3,000 to 3,500 acres burned. Were holding fast, six occupied homes have been lost. We know that number will go up, but we have been waiting on daylight to truly get in and assess an accurate number on a total. We have seen from the air, were well in excess of 30 structures lost. But from the air, we couldnt tell for sure whether those were occupied or some of them may have been out buildings or abandoned homes. Chief, were told the fire started as a controlled burn. Which means firefighters started the fire. So can you give me more specifics on how this thing got out of control . Well, with the wind conditions we had yesterday, any fire that was burning would have easily gotten out of control. We had humidity next to zero and very high winds and hot conditions. Definitely not a favorable day to be burning. But unfortunately out in the unincorporated areas such as this, there is not a whole lot of controls in place to prevent those. But it was a controlled burn, right . Correct. So should they have done that in the first place . Common sense would have told you probably not. But like i said, there is very limited lulls in control unless there is a burn ban in place to prevent folks from doing that. I assume there is an investigation into why they decided to do this controlled burn. There will be. But unfortunately, other than punitive action civilly between landowners, there is no criminal action that can be taken. I keep saying they. Who started the controlled burn . We still dont know with 100 accuracy. We know it was one of two different properties, which that will be part of our work today, is determining exactly where it started. Understand. Chief eric harlow, thank you so much for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. Thank you. Coming up in the newsroom, 59 days and still no sign of Malaysia Airlines flight 370. Com Donald Sterling may be keeping silent about his plans for the l. A. Clippers, but his wife is talking about the team. Coowner, Shelly Sterling, says she supports the nbas move to ban her husband and to look for a new ceo. Hmmm. Cnns ted rowlands is in los angeles. What does that mean exactly, ted . Reporter i dont know, carol. Kind of looks like she is distancing herself from Donald Sterling and maybe wanting to keep the team for herself. The bottom line is the clippers are enjoying the best season they have had in franchise history and now looks that both mr. And possibly mrs. Sterling would like to try to keep the team. With a win this weekend, the Los Angeles Clippers are moving on to the next round of the nba playoffs. Meanwhile, off the court, the drama surrounding team owner Donald Sterling continues to grow. In an interview with abcs barbara walters, v. Stiviano, the woman heard with sterling on the now infamous recordingses, defended the clippers owner and claims she is still close with him. Is Donald Sterling a racist . No. I dont believe it in my heart. What is his state of mind right now . Confused. I think he feels very alone. Reporter meanwhile, sterlings wife, shelly, who was at this weekends game, says she thinks the nbas plan to hire an executive to run the team is a great idea. Releasing a statement that seems to indicate she would like to hold on to the clippers, which is part of a family trust. A statement says in part, as a coowner, i am fully committed to taking the necessary steps to make the clippers the best team in the nba. That has been my aspiration ever since 1981. She is saying, essentially, that you can do what you want to my husband. He is a racist, maybe. You can strip him of his control as the board of governor. But this is a piece of family property, and you cant just take away our property. We didnt do anything. We didnt say anything. This is not us. Reporter as for Donald Sterlings next move, its still unclear if he will be willing to sell. Eric gar seta on face the nation says after speaking to sterling he doesnt think hell go down without a fight. I think he thinks hes going to be the owner for a long time. That he wants to stay the owner. And i said this will be a long, protracted fight and a painful thing for a city that is a great city, Great American city. Reporter the bottom line, carol, anybody who looks at this doesnt really see an option for either one of the sterlings to own this team, if the nba owners move forward with their plan and vote to have them sell it. That tenmember committee that met last week is expected to meet again this week to move that process along. It ted rowlands reporting live for us this morning. Lets talk more about this. This notion that Shelly Sterling might one day own the team. I want to bring in michael mccann, legal analyst and writer for Sports Illustrated and si. Com. Welcome. Hi, carol. Good morning. Good morning. Im glad youre here. So Shelly Sterling at game seven. She was shaking hands, releasing statements. It does sound like the sterlgs have a plan to keep the team. What does it sound like to you . Well, it sounds like there could be two different legal strategies that complement each other. One would be the legal strategy we talked about last week with Donald Sterling, he could file a lawsuit, he could seek an injunction. There are different recourses he has to turn to. Now the other is the possibility that Shelly Sterling could seek her own legal action to block the nba. She could argue that its its a family trust, that removing one Family Member from the clippers doesnt remove the entity, the family. And as a result, she would then take the team. It would revert to her if donald is removed. So we could see possibly two separate lawsuits against the nba by different members of the sterling family. So has Shelly Sterling been involved in the clippers at all, and does it matter . It doesnt necessarily matter. Her involvement has reportedly been limited. But if she has equity in the team and if the trust is configured in a way that removing one Family Member reverts the rest of the trust to the remainder of the family, then whether or not she is active or passive wont dictate her equity in the team. And she will argue that her lack of involvement perhaps over the years was just because she was more of a passive owner. But that doesnt mean she wasnt an owner. Interesting. So in teds package, his piece, he said Shelly Sterling released a statement. And in that statement, she welcomes the commissioners search for a ceo, who promotes equality and inclusiveness. Its clear the nba doesnt want her input, but can it keep her out of this in the long term . Can it say, mrs. Sterling, we think you should stop releasing statements. Well, adam silver said in his press conference, the nba commissioner, that any action the league has taken is against her husband. Donald sterling. It doesnt appear as if Shelly Sterling is the target of any league action, so given that comment, it would seem that the league cannot take any action against her. She appears to be exercising her rights as a coowner of the team. There is no clear reason why she cannot do so. Now, granted, her past in terms of racism and her husband, she is implicated, as well. But again, the nba didnt do anything about it for years. So its hard for the league to now argue, years ago, you were implicated. We didnt do anything, but now it counts against you. Michael mccann, thanks for your insight. I appreciate it. Thank you. Coming up in the newsroom, go months have passed, no debris, no signs of flight 370. The search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370 is now wrapping up its second month and entering a new stage that may seem even more hopeless to some. This week Search Leaders from australia, china and malaysia will finalize plans for expanding the search. But this much they do know. The new search area will mushroom in size and require a detailed mapping of the ocean floor. That task is all the more daunting, because the area is unchartered and no one knows how deep it is. So lets bring in cnn aviation analyst, mary schiavo and safety analyst david soucie. Welcome to both of you. Thanks for being here. David, this does sound hopeless. The search area may mushroom in size . Youve got to understand, theyre also retooling. There is going to be different tools used. And theyre still going to focus around those pings for a while. Remember, to the north its much deeper. The bluefin21 cant go to those depths. They have already brought it back to port, the ocean shield back at port. They are meeting to decide what will they specifically do. I expect theyll retool, get the rhema6000, it can go down to 6,000 meters. Now theyre going to look to the north where those pings were, which i thought was the best opportunity, actually. Because they had the ping for two hours straight up there. So i think thats a much more likely place to find the aircraft, and just need the right tool. Well, lets talk about the right tool. David mentioned one of them. But australia has to find private companies, and that costs money. How easy will that be to get these right tools . Well, it could be very difficult. Thats why i think its very good they met today to regroup and decide and to really plan. Because going forward, its going to take a very long time. I think it was right to put the bluefin in when they did, because they thought that was the tool. Now they know its not and its going to be a long haul. And in addition to meeting about the longrange plan and strategy and what equipment they need, they undoubtedly talked financing. And thats going to be difficult. Because these are private assets, a lot of them. The other thing theyre going to do, review whether this satellite information has been accurately interpreted, which is kind of scary too, david. Yeah. Its mostly to refine again where on that arc they should be. Theyre very confident about the fact that its on that arc. And they should be. The information that came out in the preliminary report shows its a 40degree angle from wherever that last ping was to the satellite. So thats very definitive. Before they were saying, well, were not sure where it started, where we ended. Were using doppler. The angle to a satellite is not arguable. We know it is on that arc somewhere, which is very confident news for me, increased my confidence in the fact they are looking in the right place. So to realign it is mostly about changing the assumptions, how fast is the airplane going, how high was the airplane when it happened. Again, its just going to take some more time. Okay. So mary, lets say they refine this data. They still dont know whats under that particular area of water, because its unchartered territory. How difficult will it be for them to navigate that . Well, it could be very difficult, which is why they want different assets. The bluefin had an operational depth level of 2. 8 miles, 2. 5 miles, depending on how refined they wanted the images. Because they know it could be much deeper than that, thats why they have to ask for additional resources, additional equipment too. And that equipment is spread around the world, and many different, you know, countries, different companies. It can be private equipment, as well. Which because it is unknown, they want to go down this time with the absolute best stuff, the stuff that can go the deepest parts of the ocean. So its going to take a while. And it is a really long haul process. Now, it can be two or three months before theyre back under water. Oh, wow. And, of course, it could be years before they find this plane. I mean, in all honesty, right . It could be. Could be. Yeah. I know you have more youre more hopeful than i am and youre the expert. So im going to go with you, david soucie. Mary schiavo, thanks to you too. Still to come in the newsroom, one year later after escaping from clevelands house of horror, Michelle Knight is talking about how she ended up there. In texas, a rape case is igniting outrage, not only for the leniency shown to the rapist, but for the judges comments that seem to shift blame to the victim. Police say sir young admitted to raping a 14yearold High School Classmate when he was 18. Legally an adult. He faced up to 20 years in prison, but instead received a veritable slap on the wrist. 45 days in jail and probation that was deferred. And thats not all. The judge explained the light sentence by slamming the young victim, saying she was sexually active and, quote, not the victim she claimed to be. This morning we heard from the rapists attorney who says the light sentence is warranted. He had had previous discussions with her about having sex, and she had agreed to that. She just didnt want to have sex on the school premises. Immediately upon making this bad judgment, he admitted that he proceeded over her objections to stop. And he admitted that to the police. We dont think that he qualifies as your typical sex offender. This is not somebody who has preyed on some young kids or unsuspecting people. Bad judgment, he good morning, carol. Admitted rapist and unheard of sentence. This morning rape victim advocates are upset. A judge is under fire this morning after handing down what some say is an inappropriately light sentence in a rape case. Sir young pleaded guilty to raping his classmate in classroom. He faced up to 20 years in jail but was sentenced to five years of probation and 45day stint in jail. Were certainly concerned about the message that is being sent to victims of Sexual Assault in that they will feel safe in coming forward and reporting these crimes. Reporter it wasnt just the sentence that shocked the community. Judge howard implied the victim was not the victim she claimed to be. She based the sentence in part on medical records which indicated the girl had three sexual partners and had given birth to a baby. She stands by her ruling telling the paper that young was not your typical sex offender. The victim denies the claims and said since the verdict she regrets coming forward about the rape. I was shocked that a judge, someone that i trusted with this case, would go behind my back and make these allegations that she knows nothing about. Reporter adding to the firestorm was another condition that stunned rape advocates. Young was ordered to serve 250 hours of Community Service at a rape crisis center. A condition that changed after the center said he was not welcome there. Just having a criminal defendant in the office could be a triggering effect for many of our clients. Its not appropriate. Reporter following public backlash, howard removed herself from the case. A new judge will hear a new motion. Earlier this morning, his defense attorney told cnn that it wasnt just a slap on the wrist that his defendant got. He went onto say that sir young had a promising future and now has a difficult life ahead. For the judges part, shes defending her decision saying its not her job to make people happy. Its her job to defend the constitution. Carol . Many thanks. Lets talk more about this. Jean casarez covers all things legal at cnn. Shes with me now. The judge brought the victims past into this. Thats not supposed to happen. Thats interesting. Im licensed in texas. Texas has a rape shield law which means that the past sexual history of a victim cannot come into a current trial. Most states have it. I pulled the law because i love to go from the law. There are exceptions to this. If it is in evidence. The judge said it is in evidence when she said that she had sex with two other people and had a baby. We dont know how its in evidence. Lets look at the issue. The issue is not whether hes guilty. He pleaded guilty to rape. Hes guilty of rape. Hes going to be a registered sex offender. 25 conditions on his probation. The issue is what the judge said and how she said it and then also what his sentence was. How that was fashioned. Those are the real issues here. Why the judge said what she said, she must have a reason. It came across very wrong and maybe thats why shes recused herself from the case. I dont care how many times this young girl had sex. Shes 14 years old at the time. Could she be a troubled young girl . She said it was in evidence. We dont know how it was any eviden evidence. You dont know. The defense can ask it be brought into evidence. She can ask it to be brought into evidence. Dna can be found. We dont know. I think the judge felt she could mention it because it was in evidence in some form or fashion. The defense attorney said that this young man had talked to this girl about having sex but she didnt want to have sex on School Property supposedly so they went off School Property where he proceeded to rape her. Perhaps thats what the judge meant. The girl talked to the defendant about having sex. I dont know. It seems outrageous to me. The other outrageous part of this story is he was sentenced to Community Service at a rape crisis center. Does that happen often . Ive never heard of it. The judge explained she wanted him to sweep the floors and clean the toilets, not attend the seminars. What is interesting, there are 25 conditions of probation here. He has to register as a sex offender immediately when he comes out of his 45 days. He could be a registered sex offender for life. There are consequences to that. For the next five years he has to go to counseling through the registered sex offender treatment providers. There are things that he has to do. In the next five years if he gets into any trouble with the law, hes going to be in prison for a long time. In your estimation, was this sentence light, normal, reasoned . I dont know all of the facts. I dont know all of the facts. Sometimes we read the headlines. There are things in this case that are unbelievable. Words that were said by the judge. If you look at the facts, the judge tried to fashion a sentence that was fair. I dont know what fair was. We do know that hes pleaded guilty to rape. Hes a rapist. Hell be a registered sex offender possibly for his whole life. Jean casarez, thanks so much. We appreciate it. Next hour of cnn newsroom next hour of cnn newsroom after a break. An Islamic Terror Group claims responsibility for the raid on their rural school and a man claiming too the groups leader issued a chilling warning. He will sell these girls. The Statement Issued just a short time ago says youre not going to believe this. Let me read it to you. Theres a market for selling humans. Allah says i should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women. Its just horrifying and bind b mindboggling. Reporter nigerians take to the streets in anger demanding the government do more to rescue about 200 girls who were abducted from their school more than two weeks ago. Im a young mother. I cant imagine any mother going through this. Its shocking that our government hasnt made any official statement. Everybody is saying one thing or the other. Theyre not sure. We need to hear the truth. Reporter it started on april 14th at the all Girl Secondary School in chibok. Armed men dragged the girls out of bed in the dead of night loading them on trucks and disappearing into a remote area. Dozens of students were able to escape. Translator we thought they were shoulders. We asked them to board a vehicle. My friends and i jumped from the vehicle and ran back home because we realized they dont look innocent to us. Reporter the education commissioner says the government is doing everything it can and is withholding information from safety reasons. The families want answers. Rallies have been staged around the country. Their banners read bring back our girls. The hash tag that started the social Media Campaign leading to the protest. Why does this terrorist group hate these girls . Why are they doing this . Reporter carol, what they stand for the name means western education is a sin. This is now the world is seeing how outrageous this group is. Since then they have killed thousands of innocent people just this year alone, carol. 1,500 people have been killed in violence according to human rights watch. Thats 1,500 people. These 200 girls that went missing in the dead of night taken by men who crashed into their rooms after a shootout with security guards and dragged them away into waiting vehicles, this is what they do. Its outrageous that in the world today that this is still happening. One of the things that people have said to me is that if 200 girls were taken anywhere else in the world, a country would come to a standstill. We have amber alerts. When one child goes missing, it feels as if the entire country is looking for them. We have 200 girls trying to get an education, abducted in the middle of the night and families say they have not heard anything in terms of a search and rescue operation. Nigerias president came out days after it happened and said something. Also, we learned that the United States is sharing intelligence with nigerias government as the need for a rescue appears more urgent than ever. Barbara starr is following that part of the story from the pentagon. Barbara, tell us more. Reporter president obama now receiving several update briefings on this real humanitarian Human Trafficking disaster. The u. S. Very sensitive intelligence to be shared, the type of intelligence weve seen in past cris crises, satellite intelligence, they will look for any signs of where these girls have been taken this is close hold because it is so sensitive. Its going to be very difficult. You have 200 girls taken by vehicles. Very remote area. Nobody knows if thats been dispersed or sold off at this point and where they may be. Are they in different locations . The u. S. Will help the nigerians if theyre going to mount a rescue effort and help them plan that and look at how to best do that. Thats something the u. S. Military can help nigerians with. Theres a lot of behind the scenes cooperation with the Nigerian Military on things like training and intelligence operations. Make no mistake, this is sensitive right now and it is going to be a very difficult proposition. Carol . Barbara starr reporting live from the pentagon. Youre trying to help and its fabulous of you. A new stage may seem more hopeless. Search leaders from australia, china and malaysia will finalize plans for expanding the search but they know this much. The new search area will mushroom in size and require detail mapping of the ocean floor. The task is even more daunting because the area is unchartered and no one knows even basic facts like how deep it is. Will ripley joins us now from malaysias capital. Reporter let me put this in perspecti perspective. The bluefin21 completing 18 missions so far covering fewer than 200 square miles under water. This newly expanded search area, 23,000 square miles. Clearly the bluefin is going to need a lot of help, a lot of backup as this newly expanded search continues in the months ahead. What needs to happen first and well begin later this week in australia is meetings where all of the leaders in three main countries involved in this, china, malaysia and australia, theyll sit around a table and decide how are they going to allocate Resources Available and what technology do they need to bring in to effectively search this area as quickly as possible. We know it will take a long time. Up to 12 months. It will be expensive. Up to 60 million. Heres another piece of new information that came out at a press conference earlier today. Basically the experts that met right here in the days and weeks after the plane disappeared are now going back down to australia and crunch numbers again to make sure that they still believe all of these resources are searching the right place. Theyll look at the satellite data and mathematics and physics and calculate them because here we are as you mentioned more than eight weeks in now. 4. 6 million square kilometers searched. More than 300 flights. More than 3,000 flight hours. 29 planes. 14 ships, carol. Still not one sign of debris. Theyll just make sure. Check the data. Make sure this educated guess is still their best bet. Will ripley reporting live. Supposed to be a day of clowns and high wire acts at the circus until a mid air stunt went terribly wrong. Clippers perhaps its winning the game and banning the owner. Shelly sterling, Donald Sterlings wife, seems to be setting herself up as the teams sole owner. Well talk about that in just a minute. Lets talk about the positive right now. The clippers beat golden state saturday night to take their first round playoff series and advance to play the Oklahoma City thunder. Game one is tonight in oklahoma. The clippers are also having some success off the court because guess what . Red bull is back. The feeling of the crowd chanting your name is somewhat addictive. Red bull and the clippers are resuming a partnership with star forward blake griffin. The team says it will donate of a of the red bull payments to charitable initiatives and funnel profits into basketball operations and not Donald Sterlings pockets. Red bull is the third of the sponsors to rejoin the team since the nba banned sterling last week for racist comments. Lets talk about the clippers with zain asher and andy shuls. Welcome to both of you. What will it take for other sponsors to come back to the clippers . I think at this point the sponsors are waiting for the dust to settle. There were so many Unanswered Questions right now. For example, who is the new leader going to be . Who is the new owner of the clippers . Nobody wants to make the same mistake twice so i think their rep pautation will be under a l of scrutiny. Unanswered questions sponsors are waiting for is will there be a long drawn out battle . Will Shelly Sterling be the new owner . What will that mean for the brand . Someone like oprah brings positive publicity that sponsors will jump on that bandwagon. Its corona, kia, sprint, state farm, amtrak playing it safe at this point saying theyll decide before the next nba season what theyre going to do with this brand. Carol . Its interesting. Red bull, red bull jumped right back in but with caveats. They are making sure none of the money will go into Donald Sterlings pockets. How can that be . At this point they want to protect their brand. They say to the clippers, you know, well sort of return our sponsorship but 50 has to go to charity. And youll likely see other sponsors probably doing the same thing at this point. The fan base for the clippers is getting stronger after the scandal broke. Even though the scandal may have alienated the fans and public from Donald Sterling, the fan base itself has gotten stronger. You see tv ratings for the clippers games since the scandal broke increasing between 30 to 50 so sponsors want to come back even though with possible stipulations. Andy, its your turn. It must be tough for the team to have an ownership fight overshadow their playoff run. Donald sterlings basketball decisions, theyve always been rather questionable. We saw it this past offseason. He hired doc rivers as his head coach. That move was applauded around the league as a great move as coach and president of basketball operations. Doc rivers first move was to get j. J. Redding. One of the best shooters in the league. At the last second Donald Sterling says, no, i wont approve this deal. Everyone wondered why. Everyone agreed to the deal. Rivers wanted reddick on the team. People thought back then that sterling was stereotyping reddick and he didnt want to pay reddick 27 million because he was a bench player. Reddick is on record saying now hes hearing that sterling did not want him on the team and didnt want to pay him that much money because hes white. Doc rivers did eventually win out in that situation and said his credibility was basically on the line. You let me have j. J. Reddick or no one will want to play for us again and reddick ended up being on the team. As we saw even last offseason, sterlings Decision Making was very questionable and out there. So he didnt want to pay that much money because he was white because what . White men cant jump . What . Basically. He thought that africanamerican players were more athletic and he had bad contracts with white players in the past so he didnt want to go down that road again. Even back then he was stereotyping. Supreme court made a very interesting ruling. This just into cnn. Two women in new york objected when Board Meetings, government Board Meetings, opened with a public prayer. The case went to the u. S. Supreme court. Those two women were arguing it violated separation of church and state to hold public prayers in a town hall style meeting. Im just going to read you what Justice Anthony kennedy said. He said the town of greece does not violate the First Amendment by opening its meeting with prayer that comports with our tradition. He says that public prayers are allowed at town Board Meetings. Lets parse this out. Tell us about this ruling, bill. It geives limited approval t public prayers. 54 divided along conservative liberal lines and dealt with how local communities, how far they have to go to accommodate the other faith. The two women you mentioned who brought the lawsuit claim that the prayers here at the town of greece in new york outside of rochester were overwhelmingly christian in nature. And the local town council didnt do enough to bring in other voices to offer these kind of civic prayers. So supposedly the Supreme Court gave limited approval to public prayers. What does that mean . Well, they were divided along even in the vote they were divided. Didnt all agree on exactly how far states, local communities, have to go to accommodate other faiths. The threejustice majority kind of focused on specifics of the town of greece and their policies in formulating their conclusions that countrys history of religious acknowledgement was long established by this country. Didnt give too much guidance about how their communities can do it. Basic conclusion is so long as they do not coerce cooperation by nonadherence, these civic prayers will be allowed but when the line a town would cross into an unconstitutional violation, thats where the court did not go. All right. Bill mears, thank you so much. Firefighters are trying to control a wildfire in oklahoma. One person was killed after refusing to evacuate his home. Danny, Shelly Sterling was at game seven over the weekend. Shaking hands with people. Releasing statements. It sounds like the sterlings have a plan to keep the team. What does it sound like to you . It sounds like youre absolutely right. People have talked about the fact that the sterlings, at least Donald Sterling, faces some massive Capital Gains taxes if he sells the team even though it will be for a substantial profit but certainly the sterlings have a complicated ownership in place and look to them to circle their wagon the next few days and weeks and im certain although we may not know what Shelly Sterlings plan is at this stage, weve seen that she can indeed be a wylie one. I want to back up two steps. Nba installed a new ceo for the clippers and Shelly Sterling had nothing to do with it but released this statement. Ill read it for you. She said she welcomed the commissioners search for a ceo who promotes equality and inclusiveness. Its clear the nba does not want her input but her input is there. It really is. Lets go back to the statement. Seriously . After the story . Its unbelievable. Remember, ive been saying this since this story broke. Shes really the real player here. She first really distanced herself from Donald Sterling. No, no, no. These remarks that he made, i have nothing to do with them. Theyre completely racist. And then she sort of backtracked and said of course he isnt a racist after they had a dinner meeting. I suspect that shelly is going to try to keep the team. I think adam silvers response was made but the mistake he made is does this apply to anyone else in the sterling family, he made it Crystal Clear that it only applied to Donald Sterling and that was really the opening of the door for shelly to be much more involved in the team and lets face it, if shes involved, shes just a straw person. That means Donald Sterling is still very much owning this team. I was curious. I dont know if you know the answer to this question. How involved has she been in the team . At all . Well, legally she has ownership rights as does members of the sterling family. What they are well find out. Theres no question that shes involved in the family business. Why else would she appear as a punitive member of the department of health in a video thats now surfacing unless shes more than just a silent observer of her husbands business. I think if nothing else, that video demonstrates that ms. Sterling is very involved in her husbands affairs and very involved in whats going on and has her eye on the business. Shes not just a silent idle partner in this case. Didnt the nba commissioner make it clear that Donald Sterling was being punished for these comments that took place in the privacy of his own home and not for all of his other transgressions so wouldnt that apply to her as well . You know, i think he made it clear that these comments that he made his decision to suspend him indefinitely and fine him were only based on the comments. However, i think when it goes to the vote for the nba own eowner that opens up the dialogue. I think you get the opportunity to look at everything the sterlings have done, both of the sterlings. Everything is on the table right now. So i know youre a betting man. How long do you think this will drag on . I think it will drag on. The nba procedure is clearly defined. A matter of days and weeks but the legal part, look for Donald Sterling to file suit. He is an attorney. Hes a litigious person. He may not want to go gently into that good night. As we all know, if he institutes litigation, it can drag on not for days or weeks but for years. Well see. Thanks for your insight. I appreciate it. The u. S. But that would require wifi. Switch to comcast Business Internet and get two Wifi Networks included. Comcast business built for business. This news just in from the u. S. Supreme court. I told you a little bit about it before. It involves public prayers at town council meetings. Im going to read you off my email here. This is what the Supreme Court ruled. It gave limited approval on monday to public prayers at a new york towns Board Meeting citing the countys history of religious acknowledgement in the legislation. Two women from greece, new york, objected to this Board Meeting that took place in their town because it started off with prayer and it said that not all people were christian and this was unconstitutional and violation of the separation of church and state. The u. S. Supreme court disagreed with that by a vote of 54. Lets bring in gloria brown marshall, constitutional law professor. Welcome. Hello. Thank you for having me. Thanks for being here, gloria. First off, give me your general impression of this ruling. Well, i had the opportunity to be in the courtroom during the oral argument. I saw the justices were questioning whether any legislative entity would figure out a way to have a prayer that would not be offensive to someone. I think this 54 ruling shows that theres still this decis e decisiveness between the liberal ring and the conservatives. When they say nonadherence dont have to participate, what does that mean by that . If youre jewish and dont participate in the prayer, that makes it constitutional, is that what the u. S. Supreme court has said . Heres the problem. We have a challenge that is based on history. The legal history and history of this country is that prayer was the first session of congress and we have an official leader, religious leader, in the senate, in the house and there are prayers in all of these different legislative bodies from the smallest jurisdiction to the highest. And so this idea of balancing someone who does not have any belief at all with someone who has a foundational belief that we are making these decisions that affect the jurisdiction and therefore we need guidance of a holier spirit, the person who doesnt believe is supposed to either leave the room or not participate. Dont bow your head in silence. Dont follow what the religious leader is doing and thats what the compromise is that the court finds constitutional. Interesting. So i was talking to our cnn producer, bill mears, he covers the Supreme Court. He says this isnt a hard and fast ruling. It might confuse some government bodies. Do you agree . I do agree. Its quite confusing. When you are in the Supreme Court and you watch the swearing in of new attorneys before the Supreme Court bar, they are asked to swear to uphold the constitution so help me god. So theres no footnote given in there that says those people that want to swear or affirm. In the constitution, the framers decided to have the division between church and state is say one may swear or affirm. Affirming has no religious connotation to it. The Supreme Court is trying to do the same thing. You can be part of the religious practice or not be a part of it and in not being a participant, that way you are affirming but not having a religious connection to any type of ceremony taking place. Gloria brownemarshall, thank you for your insight. I appreciate it. Heavy casualties in Eastern Ukraine today as the Prime Minister pushes for national unity. Its how i look at life. Especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem. I was taking warfarin but wondered, could i focus on Something Better . My doctor told me about eliquis for three Important Reasons. One, in a Clinical Trial eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin theres no routine blood testing. [ male announcer ] dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons are why im shooting for Something Better. Eliquis. [ male announcer ] ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. According to researchers, when older mice were exposed to blood from younger mice, their brain performance improved and in addition to better memory their muscle tissue was revitalized. When faced against peers on a treadmill, they were able to outrun those without young blood. Its creepy, right . Lets bring in a faculty fellow and chief investigator at the university of california san francisco. Welcome. Thank you for having me. This is amazing. No wonder vampires live forever. Tell us how this works. These studies are initiated at stanford and then continued and what we saw is that by just giving plasma, the part of the blood without the cells repeated over a month, you can get improvement in old mice. These normally have impairments. Put into a human context, its called spacial learning and memory. Lets say i park my car in a structure every day and when i take my car and park it i see the golden gate bridge, an elevator, an electric car charger and i come back many hours later and have to find my car. My brain will use those visual cues and take me to my car. As you get older, it gets harder and harder. We can test by using a pool. Giving it young blood made them commit less errors and able to find this hidden platform in this pool which young mice can do well and old mice cant and these rejuvenated mice can do much better. How did you come up with this idea that it might work . Its built on this amazing body of work thats happened over the last decade. It can rejuvenate stem cells throughout the body. They have shown to be involved in learning and memory. What other aspects can be rejuvenated and can can cognition be rejuvenated . Thats where the study started from. It works in mice. The senior out there just started a company and they are really interested in translating this into humans but its really important to keep in mind under controlled conditions and in a Clinical Trial setting this is definitely warranted. Its definitely worth pursuing in humans. It should be in an appropriate context. Not only could it make you feel younger, right, it could help with diseases like alzheimers, right . The potential is definitely there. I think we really need to start exploring this. Its just bursting in this field of research. I just cant get over it that you just inject blood into older mice and it makes such a difference. Its amazing. It really, truly is. It really is. Thank you so much.
