Link the debris to mh370. Special equipment from the United States. In australia now racing to the search sight. A toad pinger and its mission, to find the black box before the pingers stop. All of it in the size of denver, colorado. Are we any closer to finding flight 370. Youre live in the cnn newsroom. Good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me this morning. Breaking news and a significant headline in the search for flight 370. A very large possible debris field has been spotted. With clear weather today, more planes and ships are joining the search. Heres what we know. This latest lead comes from french satellite images taken on sunday. 122 objects spotted. Some are three feet in length. Some almost 75 feet, about the same size as the wing of a boeing 777. Now, theyre scattered across an area the size of denver, colorado. Almost 1600 miles off the coast of australia. It is a new glimmer of hope on this 19th day of the search but the urgency only grows as the batteries on those flight recorders slowly die. Just over ten days from now the pings designed to help search crews locate them will start fading away. For more on where this new debris field was found, lets check in with tom foreman. Take it away, tom. Hi, carol. This is an exciting moment in this search if it pance os out. Look at these images. Youre talking about not only more pieces but a degree of them being together, a continuity here that matters because theyre together and because there are small pieces. One of the concerns all along is that big pieces will tend to sink more, but all the small pieces fit the profile of things like asset cushions, things like that. Theyll have to see if thats what it is. It fits the profile of what happens when planes hit the water. Look at the reassembled wreckage of the tsa flight from in new york years ago. Look how many small pieces were involved along with some big pieces. Tragic images to look at but instructive to the searchers as they look for that debris field and try to get in close and take a look at it. Now though begins, as you were suggesting there, really a race against time because this area is just all the southern end or off the southern tip of the search area theyve been looking for. Thats where they found this debris. Now they have to do some reverse engineering here. This is how it works. Remember, what theyve done and they had this image of the plane coming here, this idea that might have come here. Theyve essentially gridded off the search area. What they must do now is reverse engineer where this debris, if it turns out to be the right thing, where it was a couple of weeks ago because we have to look at drift patterns. What theyre looking for is a clue whether or not this plane had shifted to the left or to the right because if you look at the target zones for where it would have hit, some search areas are more likely than others. We made them red here. If it ran out of fuel early, if it depleted all of its area early, were talking about the main location for the bulk of things that would have sunk at the top end of that search area. If they analyze drift patterns, if this is the right stuff, there are a lot of ifs here, thats all anybody has to work with now, if it had a much longer fuel load, one that lasted longer, and a longer glide because a plane like this can glide for more than 200 miles, then youd be looking under the water with those special pingers and things way down at the southern end of this load. By the way, weve made this big so that you can see it here, but this plane within this overall search area would be nothing but a spec. So, carol, right now a race is on. First, to get to this debris and figure out if its the right stuff. Secondly, to do the math to figure out if it is the right stuff, where did it come from because thats where the bulk of the plane would be under the water. That search has to go on. Great. Tom foreman, many thanks. Lets check in with lieutenant dave levy. A spokesman for the u. S. Navy seventh fleet. Welcome, sir. Thank you, carol. Thanks for having me on. Thanks for being here. We appreciate it because we know how involved you are in this search. This new satellite image with 122 pieces of debris, have you seen it yet . Carol, no, i havent seen it. Im aware of the reports, but i have not seen the imagery as of yet. Well, tell me how that works. Do you guys get images satellite immachblgs and then look for something in the water that matches it . Well, what it is is the air crews from, for example, our p. A. , were working with Australian Authorities that have the lead for this will be assigned a search area. So based on whatever information the Australian Authorities have that are leading the search, they will assign, for example, our unit where to go and search. But are you looking like lets say tomorrow you get images, these new satellite images of this debris field, will not you in particular because you may be searching in a different part of the ocean for all i know, but do you search for patterns that are depicted in these satellite images . Well, we get assigned a grid. It will be a grid system thats laid out. This is a true multinational effort. You know, weve got aircraft from china, japan, south korea, and everybodys assigned certain areas so depending on what area were assigned, well do our little search pattern in the search box that we have and report back if, in fact, we see anything. So we know two american planes up in the air, a p8 and the navy p3. Theyve covered an amazing area, 220,000 nautical square miles. How much more ground do you have to cover . Well, it depends on where we get assigned for the with the air tasking order from the australians who are leading the search. Its just its just where we get assigned and if the boxes move and the boxes shift, we just take the sector that were given and we conduct our search pattern accordingly. Its a long flight. Its a ten hour flight from takeoff to landing and, you know, we make our way out there, we do the search, and hopefully we find something and report it and make our way back. Lieutenant david lev y, thank you so much. John gogly, the National Transportation safety board, he joins me now. Good morning. Lets talk about these new satellite images a bit more. They show 122 potential objects in one area. Some are bright and they look like solid objects. How hopeful should we be . Well, there is a lot of debris in the ocean. You always have to look at it with a little bit of caution, but it is encouraging and they have so many pieces concentrated in a small area so that if i think all of us are hopeful that this is debris from the airplane. I hope so. Would wreckage of the plane float together after the storms and so mean days. These images were taken on march 23rd. Sometimes they will Stay Together and, actually, we have no guarantee that theyve been floating around that long. The airplane may have broken up and these objects may still be in the airplane and the storm may have actually broken them loose so, you know, its its yet to be seen exactly why they ended up where they are but lets hope they are pieces from the airplane. Over the last several days weve reported similar stories, that satellite images showed some debris and everybody was hopeful and then nothing was found. How optimistic are you that one day soon someone will manage to spot something in the ocean and be able to retrieve it . Well, if we are unsuccessful with this effort and we dont locate the boxes, you know, we will get reports months, even years later when people, fisher men are out there and they pull up their nets and there are pieces in their nets and that will be a clue. So its the highlighting of the area and its keeping the item fresh in everybodys mind in the area, the local people in the area that may use those waters that can help us in the future. There is an australian ship that will soon be on the way to the general area where these satellite images are picking up debris. That ping detector, do you think theyll get there in time . 30 days is what the law says that the pinger has to continue to work. It could be 33, it could be 35 days so we could get lucky with a little cushion and help us have a bigger window to search for this recorder, but well have to wait and see. John goglia, many thanks. The search for flight 370 is nearing the end of its 19th day. With no sign of the plane or its passengers, the first legal steps are now underway toward a lawsuit against the airline and the planes manufacturer. It comes on behalf of the father of one of those passengers. Johns son furman, thats him right there, a young man, 24 years old. He worked for an American Oil Company in china. He was a passenger aboard flight 370. Mr. Syragard, his father, has hired a chicagobased attorney. He wants an illinois judge to force Malaysian Airlines and boeing to provide information about the planes batteries, fire and oxygen systems and fuse is he laj. Jim is in kuala lumpur. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you, carol. You know, this is the first case like this that we have seen. Malaysian authorities, Malaysian Airlines, no comment about this thus far. Many would regard it as premature, but, remember, its these kinds of cases often that can turn up evidence later on if some parts of the debris, the fuselage is recovered. This is what were talking about. After all, these are the first steps being taken and really this is on behalf of the family of a passenger on board that flight. They want evidence of corrosion and fractures in the fuselage. That, of course, could lead to depressurization. That could cause the plane to crash. They also want details on the planes construction. They want to know about the batteries used and as you noted, fire and oxygen systems on board the 777. They also want to identify the trainers the crew trainers and the evaluators of pilots on Malaysian Airlines. Not clear how thats going to work out. In addition to that they want to ensure that they get some u. S. Investigators in there. They dont want to depend on malaysian investigators or the investigators of any other country to get in here. Its unclear to me, im not an expert on International Law, how that will work. Finally, they note that they want access to the raw evidence should it be forthcoming from the woods hole oesh shee ceanog institute. Significant. Were seeing the first legal action. What will be the reaction . Some people will see it as a positive step that will force the airlines and boeing to open up. Boeing hasnt said anything publicly on this case. Thats frustrated some people. Boeing says, well, there may be a lawsuit later on. Were not required to make any comment, but that has frustrated some people as they have tried to discover what it might have been that brought down this plane if, indeed, that is what happened. Carol . Well, these kinds of lawsuits have been filed in previous catastrophes. In essence what this lawsuit seeks to do is open up an independent investigation, right . Exactly. It wants to open up an independent investigation, but it will be viewed differently by others who say this does nothing to help us locate the plane. This is only a group of lawyers in chicago that have located the money, the source of the money, boeing, and they are suing them. But as you just said, it does open up the investigation. It would put u. S. Eyeballs on the ground. Now the fbi is already here. The faa is already here. The ntsb is already here, and all of them are said to be sharing data learning from one another with the malaysian authorities, carol. Thats true, but we dont know how much information malaysian authorities are handing over to u. S. Investigators and, of course, part of this lawsuit they want all of that information so they can conduct an investigation independent of malaysian authorities. But were going to get much more into this in the 10 00 a. M. Eastern hour of newsroom. Jim clancy, thank you. First, dramatic Helicopter Rescue in washington. The mud gripped him so tightly his pants came off when he was finally freed. The little boys mother came to get him after he was taken to the hospital and unfortunately his father and three siblings are among those still missing. Hell, yes. Oh, thank jesus. Thank you, god. If we do that, the man was rescued with seconds to spare. A new glimmer of hope in finding malaysian flight 370. Satellite images show possible debris field some 122 objects bobbing in the south indian ocean. Now until crews can reach those items, it will be impossible to tell if theyre tied to the crash, but on this 19th day of the flights disappearance, its a possible lead in a search that has been exhaustive. I heard it described earlier today, were not trying to find a needle in a haystack, were trying to find a haystack. Id tell you were trying to find the farm the haystack is on. Andrew stevens is in perth, australia, the hub of the search. Andrew, this new development has raised spirits again. Reporter absolutely, carol. Weve been here before i would have to say. Its not the first time satellite images have created ripples of hope which have so far led to nothing. These new satellite images coming from a French Defense company. As you say, 122 objects, one of them looked or some of them looked bright and could indicate they are heavy, solid pieces of what it is we dont know. They are saying at this stage that it could be linked but, again, weve heard all of this before. Now that came just a couple of hours before two spotter planes over the search zone say they also saw some debris. Again, small objects, pieces of rope. You talk to the pilots and they say we see a lot of debris down there and when we talk about seeing debris, when we tell the media about the debris were seeing, that means that it is potentially linked to flight 370. There is a lot of rubbish in the water down there so they have to be quite careful about what they look at and what they decide are objects of interest. So what we know is the satellite images show these 122 objects in the search zone. It corresponds with the two flight sources seeing those objects. What we dont have yet and what we have to have is eyes on. There are five ships now in that area. Theres the Australian Naval vessel and there are four chinese ships. Three naval ships and one ice breaker, but as yet they still havent been able to get to any of these sights to pick up any debris which could be linked. All the search planes have now left the area, carol. Its dark there. Were waiting for the last two to come back. The australians came in about an hour ago. We were told their weather conditions were good over the target. Importantly, this pilot said theyre going to be good tomorrow as well. He said we didnt see anything but conditions are good and it is now a race, very much a race against time given the fact that the beacon which tells you where the flight recording boxes are has only got another 13, 14 days to run. Understood. Andrew stevens reporting live from australia this morning. Two pieces of equipment from the United States are in australia. Joining me is sam lagrown, editor of the u. S. Naval institute news. Good morning. Good morning. Lets talk about the search planes. Theyve been looking. Some of those planes have spotted stuff, but the ships in the water havent been able to get to that spot before weather happens or night fall falls. It must be frustrating for those pilots. Well, if you think about the satellite imagery thats coming in to the pilots, its generally a guide for where they can look but the waves and the wind currents of the ocean can move debris several miles dozens of miles before planes can actually get there. So when you think about how these planes execute these search areas, theyre given a general grid, so a box in which they have to search in. So if you think about it like mowing your lawn, you have your yard and you have to go back and forth and back and forth in a very systematic way so you can check off that grid and make sure its its clear and its ready to go and then move onto the next kind of search area that youre being directed to in this case by the australians. I know when they spot debris they throw buoys out of the plane to sort of mark the spot, right . Theres all sorts of series of markers that the p3s and the p8s and now the chinese aircraft can deploy to throw out a marker to say that this area might warrant more investigation or weve already been here just in case someone else goes over the same territory. I also want to talk about this underwater robot that will be used. Its equipped with sonar. Shaped like aitor pedro. Can you tell us about that . Sure. The blue fin is a technology that the yafy has been testing for mine hunting. Some hard parts of finding mines on the bottom of the sea is you have to have a very high degree of fidelity to check to see if that is a mine or is that a refrigerator buried in muck. Its a very sophisticated sense or set based on this essentially a sonar robot and the blue fin in particular can go really deep, about three miles, and has a pretty sophisticated series of sonar and whats called a multibeam echo sounding that gives you a clear picture of the c4. The problem with that is that its relatively slow. It only goes about, you know, two to four knots when its searching so you have to have a very, very specific area to look at for it to be useful. Yeah. Theres the problem, right . I also understand a tow pinger locator is in australia. It wont get to the search area for at least another week. Will that be too late . Well, if the battery on the black box or the flight data recorder is about a month so given how long the aircraft has been missing, so its about two weeks left until that battery goes out so it all depends. This is one of two that the United States navy has thats run by their Salvage Division of naval sea systems command. They are able to employ those in the event of one of the navys planes go missing but its also you know, has obvious civilian applications here. But combining the blue fin with tpl 25 which is the black box detector, those are essentially in the region for contingency purposes. You have to pretty much know where the aircraft is before either of those pieces of equipment would be very useful. Understand. Sam lagrown, thanks so much. We appreciate it. Thank you. Still to come on the nutrisystem room, president obama newsroom, president obama showing a united front in the ukraine am well show you those remarks after we take break. New debris sightings and a more focused search area still havent answered a key question about the missing jet liner. Why did it fly for hours and hours to one of the most remote areas on earth. Cnns Martin Savidge plays out a haunting scenario from inside a boeing 777 flight simulator. Reporter morning, carol. Its called the zombie plane or its called the ghost plane or the plane without a brain. Whatever you call it, it is an aircraft that is now no longer in human control. Heres a scenario in which it can happen. The plane would have reached cruising altitude. Everything seems normal when suddenly there can be some sort of alarm. Could be a fire alarm, could be an alarm that signals a sudden decompression in the cabin. Either way, immediately the pilot and copilot go into action. The plane starts a descent and it starts a sharp turn. The reason for the turn is youre over water, you want to get back towards land and get back towards the airport or longest runway you can find. Youre descending because you need to breathe. Youre up at an altitude where people cannot breathe. The oxygen masks are on for the pilot and copilot. The passengers have had that drop down in front of their face. You need to get the aircraft down at an altitude where people can breathe normally, that would be 12 to 10,000 feet. Thats what is going on in the scenario. Then the plane kind of stabilizes for reasons were not quite clear of but it becomes stable. Starts flying more normally. And at this point then it appears somebody puts the aircraft back on automatic pilot on a new heading though, of course. And then shortly thereafter everybody passes out. Could be that its the lack of oxygen, it could be the smoke, whatever, fumes. Everybody is now unconscious, but because the plane is on a new heading and because its on automatic pilot and its got six hours of fuel, it will fly and fly and fly until eventually it runs out of fuel, the engines turn off and then the plane begins a descent into the ocean. Now its not clear if that descent would be dramatic or whether it would be gradual. There are a number of features on this airplane to make it gradual. Either way, without human control, once it gets to the water, it is likely to have a catastrophic ending. That is the ghost plane theory. Were not sure if it fits everything that flight 370. Many people believe it is a viable explanation. Carol. All right. Martin savidge. Thanks as always. Her son was aboard flight 370. She talked with pauline chiou. Me and most of the relatives here are seeking for the truth, the truth of what happened to the plane and the truth about where it was. Thats what we want. Reporter why dont you believe the data and the answers from the malaysian government . Because you have said time and time again that you believe the malaysian government is actually hiding something. Yes. W reporter why do you believe that . Well, because its from a theory, a nnalysis from the satellite data. Theres nothing found. So i dont believe any such kind of conclusion. Reporter now the data from the Satellite Company and from the u. K. Aviation authority has been collected and the malaysian authorities have taken that into account, and when you take into account also the amount of fuel that the plane would have had at that point, theyre saying the logical conclusion is that it was in this part of the southern corridor in the southern third indian ocean. Yes. Reporter why is that not good enough for you . Because it is still a theory. It is just still analysis. Much of the focus was on the situation in ukraine. Russias actions and ukraine arent just about one country but about the kind of europe and the kind of world we live in. The european project was born from the ashes of two world wars. The United States has long supported european integration as a force for peace and prosperity. Europes progress rests on basic principles, including respect for International Law as well as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations. Thats what russia violated with its military action against ukraine. The United States and europe stand united on this issue. We are united in our support for the yukraine and the need to provide economic assistance to help stabilize its economy. We are united in our commitment to europes security and united in our determination to isolate russia and impose costs for russias actions. Every step of the way, i have coordinated closely with our allies and partners in europe. I want to thank the president s for the leadership they have shown during this difficult time. I want to commend the eu for the important steps taken already to make sure russia feels the cost of its behavior in ukraine by implementing visa bans and freezing assets around designating individuals for sanctions and canceling engagements with russia and if they stay on their course, the consequences will continue to grow. This happens on top of the measures the United States are imposing on russia and taking together the most significant sanctions they have faced since the end of the cold war. More over, russia stands alone. The 28 members of the European Union are united. The 28 members of nato are united. Every member of the g7 has imposed sanctions on russia as we announced on monday. We will meet without russia. If anyone in the russian leadership thought the world wouldnt care about their actions in ukraine or they could drive a wedge between the Eropean Union and the United States, they clearly miscalculated. As ive said repeatedly and was mentioned by both president s, there is still a way for russia to work with ukraine and the International Community to deescalate the situation through diplomacy. That is the only way the issue will be resolved. If russia continues on its current course, however, the isolation will deepen. Sanctions will increase and there will be growing consequences for the russian economy. This reflects the enduring commitment to the goal that has brought europe and the United States together for decades, a europe that is whole and free and at peace. In closing, i just want to say to you, as you prepare to conclude your tenures later this year, thank you for all the outstanding work that you have been able to do together. We have gone through some very rocky waters. We have persevered through some very difficult Economic Times but throughout this process, we have been able to deepen the ties between the urine union and the United States. We have been able to advance the cause of security and Human Dignity around the world. Im personally grateful to both of you for your leadership as well as your friendship and most importantly for the purposes of our country, your dedication to the transatlantic relationship. Thank you very much. Thank you for your statement, president obama. Now, it is time for two questions. Please state your name before addressing your question. Yes, sir. Christian berma. Good afternoon. I have one question for the president s. First, it is on russia and ukraine. Given that the u. S. Has less to lose from economic sanctions against russia, would it be appropriate to invisit report for european allies in the realm of energy. Second, you mentioned all three, the trans atlantic trade and investment partnership. A lot of citizens have concerns. Their fears are that standards for Environment Protection or Consumer Protection might be at stake. How do you want to convince these citizens . Thank you very much. With respect to sanctions, we have seen excellent coordination between the United States and europe. On both sides of the atlantic, there was recognition that the initial time into crimea, we had to take specific steps. We did. Identifying individuals that were in part responsible for those actions. When the russian government made the decision to annex crimea after a referendum that nobody outside of russia could take seriously. We heightened those sanctions in coordination. We are coordinating the potential for deeper sanctions should russia move forward and engage further into ukraine. We recognize that in order for russia to feel the brunt, the impact of these sanctions, it will have some impact on the Global Economy as well as all the countries represented here today. We are mindful that is going to be different not just between the United States and europe but also among Different Countries inside of europe, some of whom are more dependant, for example, on energy from russia than others are. So were taking all of this into account. I think energy is obviously a central focus of our efforts and we have to consider very strongly. This entire event has pointed to the need for europe to look at how it can further diversify its Energy Sources and the United States is blessed with some additional Energy Sources that have been developed, in part, because of new technologies. Weve already licensed, authorized the export of as much natural gas each day as europe uses each day. It is going into the open market. It is not targeted directly. It is going through private companies that get these licenses and they make decisions on the world market about where that energy is going to be sold. Whether through our Energy Ministers and at the highest levels, we are able to find ways in which we can accelerate this process of diversification. This is something we are very much committed to. We think it would be good for europe and the United States. It is not something that can happen overnight. It is not something that can happen overnight. What this entire crisis is pointing to is the need for us to get moving now with a sense of energy. We are committed to doing that. On the issue of that very briefly, we already do enormous trade and there is enormous direct investment between the United States and europe. We account for a big chunk of the World Economy in our economic relations. Thats not going to change. I think that. I think our publics in the United States and europe have legitimate questions when it comes to trade deals, as to whether or not it is going to benefit their countries over the long term and can we make sure that part one victories around Consumer Protection or environment ta Environmental Protection are preserved as opposed to weakened. That is concern in the United States as it is here. Here is what i can tell you as these negotiations proceed. I have fought my entire political career and as president , to strengthen Consumer Protections. I have no intention of signing legislation that would weaken those protections. I have fought throughout my political career and i am fighting as we speak to strengthen Environmental Protections in the United States. I have no interest in signing a trade agreement that weakens environmental standings. So i think that there has been a lot of publicity and speculation about what might be or could be or is this provision potentially used by corporations to in some fashion weaken some of these protections or encroach on sovereign decisions that are made. I would just caution toefsh wait until they actually see what has been negotiated before they engage in all these speculations. I think there is generally been suspicion in some quarters around trade. Some of those suspicions are unjustified. Some of them reflect old models of trade agreements that have been updated. What i can say for certain is that, because of the trading relationship between the United States and europe, weve created millions of jobs on both sides of the atlantic. Growth and prosperity has advanced. There is a way of doing this right that will help us make sure that we remain at the cutting edge of innovation and growth and development. There are bad ways of doing trade agreements as well. U ultimately, all of these things will have to be subjected to scrutiny in the light of day. No point in getting excited about potential provisions in trade agreements that havent been drafted yet. There will be plenty of time to criticize trade agreements when they are actually put before the public. I guarantee you, we are going to be working hard to make sure Environmental Protections, Consumer Protections already in place, that those are strengthened. I shared with president van rompuy and barroso. Part of the suspicion about trade is whether it is benefiting everybody whether than just those at the top, small segments of our economies and large corporations or small or medium size businesses. It is important for us as leaders to ensure that trade is helping folks at the bottom and folks in the middle and broadbased prosperity. Not just a few elites. Thats the test that im going to apply in whether or not it makes sense for us to move forward in a trade deal i many confident we can actually shake a trade deal that accomplishes those things. Just on ukraine, and i guess the president of the European Commission can speak on the teetip. On ukraine, we coordinated our first years of sanctions. We are going to jump away. President obama finishing up his remarks. There are only two questions allowed. So we are rest assured that the president for the European Council will answer the next one. I want to bring in white house correspondent, michelle kosinski, traveling with the president. Phil black, in moscow. The crisis in ukraine, one of the top issues at this summit. It obviously is. The president spoke a lot about a united front with europe against russias actions in crimea. He also touched on perhaps the United States exporting more natural gas to europe. It will take time. Right. There are so many other issues to deal with surrounding simply what has happened in ukraine. European security. How to reassure neighbors of ukraine and russia, that their interests are being looked after by the greater European Community and the United States. Also, Energy Security is a big one. If there was a headline to come out of this announcement, it was that the g7 leaders are going to meet soon on that. President obama mentioned a large amount of natural gas from the u. S. Has been released. It goes on to the open market. Thats handled by individual brokers. It is not as if it is going directly to those partners who would right now get most of their gas from russia. Thats another way that the sectoral sanctions, as they talked about, if those go forward, that European Partners could be protected. We know that if there are further sanctions enacted, that that would affect not only european economies but the Global Economy. Thats something that european leaders have concerns about as does president obama. There are obviously a lot of topics on the table at these meetings. Not only the ones that we just mentioned but also Climate Change and trade. As you said, ukraine was top issue. It is what is going on right now. The first speaker, the president of the European Council, he mentioned that right off the bat. I think both, the eu and president obama mentioned how important the partnership is. The president of the European Council called it the bed rock on which we deal with these challenges. President obama called that european u. S. Relationship the cornerstone on moving forward. Both also mentioned there is still a window open for diplomacy. The eu mentioned it was significant, that the Foreign Ministers of the ukraine and russia met during the g7 talks two days ago. They saw that at least a small step to the fact that they mentioned it. President obama also reiterated that diplomacy is really the way they want to go here and left it at that. Moving on then to other subjects that affect deeply both the u. S. And the eu, carol. Michelle kosinski, thanks. Lets head to moscow and check in with phil black. The president announced that if russia doesnt behave itself, they are going to issue more sanctions against russia. He is presented a united front with europe. Is president putin listening . A lot of what we heard from president obama was the same message, the west united, russia isolated. Serious sanctions in place. The path to diplomacy and talks, that is still potentially dead. I agree what he was saying there, i think, about diversifying europes energy is key. Very significant in these terms. Because, from the very beginning of this crisis, there has always been a sense the u. S. Has been coming in harder and faster when it comes to sane shunctions. The Europe Economy is more intertwined with russia, also because of europes dependence on russian natural gas. At the g7, it has been a big talking point. They are all committed to diversifying europes energy and gas supply, looking at the possibility of u. S. Gas picking up some of that percentage. That was the homework for g7 Energy Ministers. Longterm, this is significant too. In the event that europe has managed to wean itself off its dependency on russian gas, that, in the long term, is a significant economic hit for the russian economy. Russias economy is very much based on oil and gas exports. If it loses europe as a gas customer to any significant degree, that will be felt here in moscow, carol. Phil black, michelle kosinski, many thanks. Lets turn our attention now to the other big story of the morning. A significant headline in the search for flight 370. A very large possible debris field has been spotted. With clear weather today, more planes and ships are joining the search. Here is what we know. The latest lead comes from french satellite images taken on sunday. 122 objects were spotted. Some were threefeet in length, some almost 75 feet, about the same size as the wing of a boeing 777. They are scattered across an area about the size of denver, colorado, almost 1600 miles off the coast of australia. Jim clancy is in the malaysian capital of kuala lumpur. Good morning, jim. Reporter good morning, carol. Yes. That generated a bit of excitement here in kuala lumpur. It is the fourth time we have had a satellite image that indicated there was some debris in the area of the search, the area where the best calculations say flight 370 may have gone into the southern indian ocean. As a result, of course, there was a reaction. Today, we had 12 aircraft up over that area searching. They had some positive hits. They did not the aircraft were not able to confirm that any of the debris that they cited was directly linked to flight 370. This field operates or poses perhaps more hope. It is somewhat to the south of the limits of what the previous debris field or search area was thought to be. Therefore, they are going to investigate it and investigate it very closely. It is frustrating, because the image comes down from the satellite and takes days to analyze it. It comes here to kuala lumpur and then is sent down to australia. The search is put underway. By that time, all of that debris has shifted. It has moved. They have to relocate it and put a ship in the water that can get to it. They have to bring it over the side and verify exactly what it is. Then, only then, will we have a link that might be able to be traced to flight 370 itself and the allimportant flight data recorders. Carol . So frustrating. Jim clancy reporting live from malaysia. I want to get a little more on where this new debris field was found and why it might be so important. Lets check in with tom foreman. Can you talk specifically about the debris that was spotted by these french satellites . They are talking a lot about color to them. They seem like solid objects. Sure. Carol, all of that is important in an observational sense. Jim mentioned one of the things. The location is good. It is near where other things were found. The other thing that matters about this is the contiguous nature of it. You are talking about a box that is about 12 1 2 miles by 12 1 2 miles. That is a reachable space and a studiable space. The fact it was all together is good. This is where the search areas have been. This is where the debris has been found. It is definitely in the right area. They have to get there and actually touch the stuff to figure out if it is the right thing. We do know this. The nature of it, the idea of a lot of little pieces. Look at this image of the twa crash if we bring this back from when they reconstructed that, the one that happened off new york. There are some big pieces that were involved. This involved a fuel tank which investigators say exploded. It went down in the water. That tore the plane apart. It produces a lot of little pieces, many of which can float. If this proves to be the right thing, then a different job begins. That is the job of reverse engineering where it came from. Think about it this way. You have the plane coming in. This is what investigators are considering. They have a search area, which they draw a big grid over so they can essentially analyze where every space is. Then, they start narrowing down to specific areas. Thats exactly what this would do. For example, if this was in the middle, you might say thats the high priority area right now. If it were to the left or right, you might say those are the high priority areas. Bottom line, this sort of evidence is what they were looking for. In the entire search area, that plane would be nothing but a speck. This kind of debris field if it pays out, lets them start engineering the actual site of the plane under the water. Carol . Tom foreman, many thanks as always. Still to come, a hightech listening device arrives in australia to search for that black box. Brian todd visited the place where this thing is made. Carol say, experts say this piece of equipment, the toad pinger locator could give search teams an advantage to find the elusive black box. That story, just ahead. The clock is ticking down on when the batteries in the planes black box are expected to start dying. If a debris field can be pinpointed, searchers will use a hightech listening device to find the flight recorders or black boxes. The toad pinger locator has now arrived in perth, australia and will be placed aboard an australian ship. Ryan todd visited the facility where that pinger locator is made. It is a fascinating story, brian. It is, carol. Without a confirmed piece of debris or a confirmed pinpointed location, search teams want to be ready for that, if and when it happens. They want to be ready to find the crucial black box and the pinger, that crucial piece of equipment you just mentioned that will help them do that. It has just arrived in the region. The u. S. Navy has only two of these hightech listening devices and one of them is now head together indian ocean to help find the missing plane. It is called a toad pinger locator. Its mission, find the planes black box before the fingers die out. Thats in less than two weeks. Think of your cell phone ringer. If you lose your cell phone, you can call it and you hear the phone ringing. So you narrowed down your search. Cnn had a look ensued the facility of phoenix, international, where the toad pinger is made. This helped recover wreckage. The pinger locator with the fin on top is towed slowly through the area. It can go down to 20,000 feet below the surface. For hours and miles at a time, it is listening intently for the black boxs signal. How far away can it be . The outside edge is about 2 miles, a mile and a half to 2 miles away, it can detect the sound. The signal would come up through the umbilical. You can see here is a cable. It runs up through the umbilical. It comes into our receiver unit. We have speaker on here and all the power buttons and we can adjust the frequency it is looking for. Out of this box, we have computers set up that graphically represents the signal that you are hearing from the bea con. Then, a team on deck deploys phoenixs other assets. An autonomous underwater vehicle scans the sea floor looking for the black box and debris. Once the toad pinger locator finds the black box, this is the machine that can recover it, this remotely operated vehicle that can go very deeply in the ocean with manipulator arms can pick up all sorts of debris and the black bok box. This one recovered the black box for air France Flight 447. With flight 370s pinger battery life ticking down each day, every moment is critical. Until they recover this data, it is still a mystery. They will not know what happened. Why not just employ a lot of these pingers on different ships and blanket an entire area of the ocean. The manufactures say there are just a few of these devices in the world and they are very expensive to deploy. Carol . Brian todd, we are on to flight 370 in a minute. Satellites show a possible debris field. 122 objects bobbing in the south indian ocean. Until they can reach them, it will be impossible to tell if they are tied to the crash. It is a possible lead in a search that has not turned up a single piece of physical evidence. Another tantilylizing clue, a mysterious half ping. It came in after the last transmission from the aircraft. That half ping is the socalled digital hand shake between the jet and the satellite. Jim tillman is a retired captain from American Airlines and now serves as cnn aviation analyst. Good morning, jim. Good morning. How are you . Im good. I want to talk about this half ping. It came after 8 11 a. M. What might this show . I think it is going to have to be carefully analyzed in terms of the timing of the half ping and its nature. It may very well be the very last attempt for the airplane to hand shake with the authorities other means of discovering whats going on through the satellite. It may become very, very significant. Right now, it is all part of that same jigsaw puzzle that we have with all those pieces that they have finally located in the debris field. So, this half ping, im just trying to figure out what it could mean. The electrical system would have been down or the plane would have been communicating better with satellites, right . This mysterious half ping. So when that hand shake was made, could that mean the electrical system somehow came back to life . Could it mean that the plane came in contact with salt water and that somehow activated the electrical system . What could it mean . I think youre analysis is working out pretty well, actually. The fact that it did occur whether when it did and where it did is significant. For you to suggest that maybe salt water helped to trigger it makes a lot of sense to me. There is a whole lot about these pings that i dont know how much most of us know. This is a completely different world. The experts in the investigators are trying to piece this together themselves. I think that all of this evidence put together, with all of these pings taken into account, that the jet went down sometime between 8 11 and 9 15. I suppose if they closed, narrowed the window that much, it would greatly help them pinpoint where to look in the indian ocean. It will make all the difference in the world. I woke her up this morning to, i think, very good news. It finally may have something of substance that we could point to in holding our hands and examine to find out what really went down in this deal. Im delighted to know that we found a debris field and im hopeful it is the right one. We keep talking about them finding debris fields, right . The ships that charge toward those debris fields that are spotted from the air via satellite, they never quite reach the debris field. I guess the encouraging thing is that i think four separate satellite images now show debris within the same area. Thats important, right . It is very important. The idea that you have this much material all in one site, so to speak, says a lot about where all the rest of the items may very well be. I think this is the first real encouraging find that they have made since they have been doing these flights every day. My hat is off to those out there in this wilderness, you might say, digging out the little pieces here and there. Now, we have some pieces to the puzzle to put together. Thats painstaking work. It will take a lot of time, because i think it is going to be worth it. I hope so. I hope the weather holds out tomorrow and they can search again. Thank you so much, jim tillman. I appreciate it. So it seems like this family doesnt want money, per se, although they may in the future. I dont know. It seems like what they want right now is an independent investigation of whatever happened to this plane. Right. There is nothing worse for a family than losing a child. I feel terrible for them. You have to question the merrit for this legal its not a lawsuit. It is just, as you said, a petition, a request to get information from boeing and maybe malaysia. You real will i have to question that legally. First of all, we dont know where the plane is. We havent found a piece of the wreckage. We dont have any of the bodies. While mechanical system failure may be in play, there is no specific evidence to indicate that. So the effect of this request for information about the plane essentially is, give us everything about the plane that you have, which is irresponsible. This is not the first time this law firm has done that. It did the exact same thing after the a sechseana. The judge said, out. It is not an it is an improper and not a legally founded claim to be making at this early stage. There are plenty of responsible lawyers out there that specialize in this area. Our firm is one of them. They wouldnt think twice about making this kind of a legal petition at this stage when you really dont know a lot of the answers. The other thing this petition asks for, it requests that u. S. Investigators be involved in the investigation. I found unusual. The other unusual factor in this petition is it was filed in chicago. Yes. I havent read the petition specifically but i am familiar with the general type of tact thats used here. You are right. You cant go into a court in cook county, illinois, and ask that judge to tell the malaysian government to let the ntsb be more involved in the case. I dont think they will have any jurisdiction over Malaysian Airlines, except maybe for the u. S. Cases, u. S. Residents that were citizens on the plane or people that bought their ticket in the u. S. Or were returning to the u. S. They have a different claim. This kind of a petition does a disservice to those americans that have the potential for claims in the u. S. But really across the board for all families. It really sends a false sense of hope or investigative ability i think the families have to question, why is this law firm doing that . You can understand why this young mans father might have employed these lawyers. They are not getting much information from malaysian authorities. They are frustrated. They want some kind of answer. They want the United States more involved, because, frankly, we kind of know what we are doing when it comes to plane crashes. You can understand why perhaps this family would take the bait. Absolutely. There is no suggestion that the family at all is doing anything improper. The only thing im suggesting is to all the families, is to, you know, consider what a petition like this is really intended to do. Look at the lawyers that are purporting to be experts in this area and do your homework. Talk to other lawyers, including lawyers in the u. S. , whether they practice in aviation law, like my friend does, or not. Youll be able to get a good idea of which firms are capable in this area and which firms run out to foreign crashes and try to get visibility. Daniel rose, thanks for your insight as always. Whats your policy . T the search for missing flight 370 isnt malaysias only trouble. They are in need of deep financial bailout. Reporter you cant blame the carriers financial troubles on flight 370. Malaysia airlines was in a lot of trouble before the plane disappeared. It was losing a lot of money, struggling with competition from lowcost carriers. It tried to cut costs. It wasnt enough. Now, clearly, things could get worse for the airline financially. Because of flight 370, malaysia air could get hit not just with a slew of lawsuits but it could get hit by a crisis of confidence meaning fewer people may not want to fly the airlines. One analyst says, yes, this is an airline that may need a government bailout. The malaysian transport minister was asked about that today. They are not saying yes. They are not saying no. You look at how investors are nervous. Shares of Malaysia Airlines have dropped since the plane disappears. Carol . All perfectly understandable. How big a bailout are we talking about . Thats a good question. You look at how the company has been doing. It has lost more than 1 billion over the past three years. That doesnt factor in the impact of flight 370. Clearly, there could be a sizeable amount this airline needs. One analyst says Malaysia Airlines wont shut down. Here is a bit of proof. We have seen airlines get bailouts. They go bankrupt. They merge. They still operate through it all. Malaysia airlines could still have options. Im just thinking back to the ceo and they are calling for the ceo. The families are calling for the ceo to resign. He probably will resign after this all said and done, whatever that may be. Wouldnt be a surprise. That is just tip of the iceberg. In the east. 8 00 a. M. In the west. After 19 days and so many leads that led nowhere, could this finally be the breakthrough in the search for flight 370 . The malaysian government says that new freshbased satellite images show more than 100 objects floating in an area in the southern indian ocean about 1600 miles from perth, aus st l australia. Some appear to be big, the size of a wing and some smaller, the size of a seat. This appears to be the most promising lead so far. Here is what malaysias transportation minister said earlier. We were able to identify 122 potential objects. Some objects were medium length. Others were as much as 23 meters in length. Some of the objects appeared to be bright, possibly indicating solid material. So you need to be cautious, obviously, about every one of these leads until you get some kind of confirmation. Getting that confirmation, not one big easy. The satellite, as micayla said, saw them on sunday. So
