8 a. M. In the west. Remembering Michael Brown. What they are calling Home Going Service for him. He was gunned down by a Police Officer in ferguson, missouri. You are looking at live pictures. Music, singing. There are celebrities. There are stars. There are civil leaders, members of the black community there. The voices of outrage over the shooting are now silent. Michael browns father requested peace on this day, the day that he and his wife lay their son to rest. That request is being honored by the thousands of mourners gathered at this ceremony. Theres so many people there. They have to use an overflow room. For many people, Michael Browns death was a painful reminder of racial profiling and unequal treatment at the hands of Law Enforcement. I want to begin with don lemon outside the funeral service. Stephanie elam is on the street where Michael Brown was killed. I want to go first to don outside this church and don weve seen this really remarkable procession over the last several minutes right behind you. Yeah. And in that procession, john and michaela, good morning, by the way, in that procession we saw Michael Browns mother, Leslie Mcspadden arrived just a short time ago. She was met out front by the familys attorney, Benjamin Crump, was Trayvon Martins family attorney as well. She arrived and i saw her yesterday, i saw their a couple of days before, and she had really looked defeated, obviously. Who wouldnt considering the circumstances. But just this glimpse from we were, i guess, i dont know, just a couple of feet away from her. She looks strong and she looks good. Its not unnoticed that she wore red. Im sure theres a message of strength in the fact that shes wearing red today. She looks good today and strong. As we saw in the front row, we saw bishop jaks, martin iii, bernice king, talk show host tom joyner and spike lee sitting as well, and a number of other dignitiaries. As i spoke to Trayvon Martins mother yesterday, if it were up to him, i would have all those people sit in the side room. This day is about the brown family and the loved ones. Its great to have that support. Its about the people who knew him. Thats the thing. At the end of the day, while this is serving as something more significant to a lot of other people, this is a very, very, very, very intensely personal day for this family. We know its a big family. Something nearly 4 to 500 members of the brown family are expected at this service, don. Yeah. Absolutely. And reverend Charles Ewing who is a family member, he is the great uncle of Michael Brown and the uncle of Leslie Mcspadden the mother. I asked him what hes going to say. He said im going to talk about our family having a number of different reverends and different clergy in our family. Im going to talk about how he was raised. Im going to talk about how surprising it was to see the videos of michael in the Convenience Store and how that was a departure from the young man that he knew. He said hes going to he said i may be jotting stuff down. He said my note is god. Im going to preach from whatever god tells me, you guys know this. However the spirit moves me and thats what hes going to do. Let me can i just talk about yesterday, michaela and john . Michaela, i know you and john saw the interview. You were approximate both in the morning show. For the first time, the mothers of Trayvon Martin and sean bell, they met Leslie Mcspadden. Michael browns father for the first time yesterday and it was something to behold. It was very moving and if shes wondering how shes going to deal with this, she neednt worry, these ladies have her back. This is such an important day for her and the family, after two weeks which has been filled with turmoil many days, they need a chance to mourn, they need a chance to say goodbye to their son, their brother, miebl brown. I want to bring in Stephanie Elam right now. Were looking at pictures for this church in st. Louis. Stephanie has been in ferguson. Michael browns father calling for peace today. Stephanie on those streets, are we seeing that today . Definitely, john and michaela. Ive been now in ferguson for a week. I got here on monday last week. The energy of this city today versus the way it felt a week ago is completely different. Theres a pause for reflection here. People are quiet. Theres a sort of a solemn vibe if you look behind me. Right here, thats where mike brown died. This is where his body was lying in the street on the day for four hours. People are saying to me that could have easily been my son and looking what this means for the community. But the energy here is not at all angry. Its not violent. Its just a moment of reflection. And you can feel it. We recently just had a group come through here of Young College students and they actually go to the historically black college in st. Louis. All young black men who came here, they spent the morning going to a Elementary School to cheer on their day. They wanted to come by and see this. To talk about what don was saying, at first they were thinking they wanted to go to the memorial. They decided to do something that had more of an impact on their community. Thats why they decided to focus on education and those Elementary School kids and coming here just to have that moment because they are just about the same age as mike brown. So its really interesting to talk to them and hear their perspective. Also interesting to note that they are optimistic, this situation, this boil point that had sort of welled up here in ferguson between police, between black folks and white folks, they do believe it can get better. Despite all of this, there was optimism from every one of the young men that i spoke to. Its really very interesting to note that today, monday, the first day of school for a lot of kids in ferguson, theres going to be a lot of tough conversations in those classrooms, stephanie, both the high school, element yae school. White kids and black kids and every other colored child, they are going to have questions for their teachers im sure. Hopefully the teachers can use this opportunity and there can be some conversations that will be certainly much needed. First day of school in many of these communities. Also a day when a lot of 18 years old are going to school, to college for the first time. Michael brown will not be. Don, you are sitting outside that church today. Were beginning to see those seats now almost completely filled up. Youve talked about, you know, the reverend Charles Ewing who will be the pastor who will be delivering the eulogy. Who else will we hear from today . Were going to hear from a number of people. Tom joyner, bernice king, martin iii. Were going to hear from t. D. Jakes. These are schedule speakers. They want to hear from folks as much as possible. Were definitely going to hear from the reverend Charles Ewing and from several Community Leaders and members of the clergy here as well. Were also going to hear from Benjamin Crump who is going to deliver a message from the family. I dont think the family is going to deliver a message, but one never knows in these particular situations. Lynn, the church the temple is full, i mean the number of people who have gotten in. So now people are starting to go into the overflow room, so the seats that you see there, i think that they have them reserved for the family members, and those several hundred seats that you see there. So the overflow room is now overflowing as well. I dont know, can we get this shot behind . I know l. Z. Is here. Theres a shot behind l. Z. , where you see the motorcycles lined up, and there have been several a motorcycle gang, you said, l. Z. Motorcycle club. All around missouri. I spoke to them asked why did you come, they said it could have been our kid, it could have been us. L. Z. Will be joining us in this hour for other coverage. I wanted to get that in there. John and michaela, back to you. Very moving day. Really moving to be sure. Among the other guests that we know have been invited and are attending, you mentioned don that Sabrina Fulton and valerie bell, the mother of sean bell will be there. The cousin of emmitt till, the aunt and uncle of oscar grant. There is a growing number of people who feel that they want to be there to support the brown family. Also three representatives from the white house, the obama administration. There are people who have been there for several weeks also as don was just saying who were involved in the protest. Today, two members of the white house. Interesting to see the administration reaching out like this. Were going to get back to these services, these Home Going Services as they go on over the next hour, but first we want to given you some of the other stories were following right now. A active shooter incident was reported at virginias ft. Lee this morning, the Army Installation was put on lockdown but in the last hour, thankfully the all clear was given. No word at this point what sparked the warning. An american journalist is now free after being captured by islamic rebels nearly two years ago in syria. 45yearold Peter Theo Curtis was released yesterday by a syrian rebel group. They have ties to al qaeda. He is expected to be reunited with his family shortly. Sources tell us the u. S. Was not involved in negotiations for his release and it was unknown if any ransom was played. Great britain says its close to identifying the man who beheaded james foley. The man is speaking with a london accent, wearing all black. They have been using Sophisticated Technology to analyze the voice. Linguists say hes younger than 30. U. S. Air strikes are striking isis targets. Strong shaker in california over the week. People in californias in a pa valley they are in cleanup mode after the strongest earthquake in the bay area in 25 years. And it didnt just rattle nerves. It did damage and it hurt people. More than 100 people were injured in the quake early sunday morning. U. S. G. S. Estimates the damage could be in billion dollar range. The water system still not back to normal there. We have dan simon joining us from fairfield in, california. We can see the damage behind you. The amazing thing, the lucky thing here is no one was killed. Reporter yeah, that plays into the theme here. The San Francisco chronicle, you can see the front page, wakeup call. Thats definitely what it is. They are really doing two thing here in napa and im in downtown napa and thats one, doing a survey of the damage, a comprehensive survey of the damage and really beginning the full scale cleanup and its going to be a while. You can see this building behind me on the bottom, this was an outdoor cafe, on the top, there was some offices here and you can see these bricks just crumbled. What folks are doing throughout the community, they are trying to assess the infrastructure as well, trying to see if there are any more gas leaks, water leaks, its going to be some time before they can finish all that. Weve seen crews survey these local businesses trying to see if in fact these buildings are safe, and also trying to see if they have any particular needs. It appears that to some extent things are functioning normally throughout the town because i saw some public buses. I talk to some residents on the street. I asked if they are going to work. A couple of them told me that in fact they are. But still the schools are closed today. The local starbucks, for instance, isnt open, so its still going to be some time before things really return back to normal. John and michael. I know the big concern is theres been a number of after shocks and sizeable ones. Have you experienced them since youve been there . Reporter i personally havent felt any, but you know, ive been keeping track of the website that does. It appears that there was a small one maybe about an hour ago, just a 1. 0, but you are right. Since the quake occurred, a little more than 24 hours ago, there have been more than 50 after shocks. So thats a big concern. One thing i do want to point out to you. You see on that building, that red sign on the door, thats whats called a red tag. Those are very important. Folks going around today or crews going to various buildings, going to homes and putting red tags up. That means that the building, at least in this case, is uninhabitable at this point, about 100 of them throughout the area. Dan simon in california. People have been mentioning the fact that the Wine Industry is going to ache a real hit. A lot of folks there make their living working on some of those wineries, minimum wage workers, they are going to experience the side effects of this quake as well. Damage to their homes, damage to the infrastructure. Its a concern for sure. A lot of people affected. Were also keeping an eye obviously on whats going on in st. Louis today. The Home Going Service for Michael Brown. You are looking at live pictures from inside the friendly missionary baptist church. We followed this all morning. His mother, you can see her right there in the red dress. Really her first chance to mourn and for two full weeks of turmoil. Well have much more after this. We are watching, and i think many people across the nation are watching the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church where very solemn and at times joyful too home going for Michael Brown, an 18yearold teenager who died august 9th. Today, august 25th, there are many people, thousands of people have come to pay their respects, to support the family as they lay him to rest. And this day, was a day when so many kids are going back to school in that area around the country will have to deal with this head on in some cases. A day when a lot of 18 years old going to college, heading off to their first job, Michael Brown not along them today. Its also a day of searing heat. Theres Michael Luther king iii right there. Searing heat in st. Louis and the region, although at least the heat is in terms of temperatures and not heat on the street which weve seen. The father of Michael Brown calling for a day of peace and really i think getting it to remember his son, Michael Brown. Our don lemon is outside this service right now. Hes been watching all morning. Hes along with cnn commentator l. Z. Granter son. They have been watching this all unfold. Good morning to you, john and michael. Yeah, its a hot day. I had to take the jacket off. We were soaking through our clothing here. Its 92 degrees and i think the heat index is way higher than that. Probably into the hundreds here on one of the hottest days since we have been here and you are right, what we have been hearing today, peace really peace and sort of reconciliation, how do you move forward . Joining me now to talk about it l. Z. Granderson and cnn contributor donna brazil. We have talked about the issue about raising young black men and thats certainly something that has come to the fore in the last few days, weve talked about it a lot. Hopefully there will be some difference made when it comes to having a talk with your son. Absolutely. I was in new york, saturday, in statten island for the rally protest for the man who died from the choke hold by the nypd, it was a multigenerational crowd, there was a lot of empathy in that crowd. When i went into the overflow room, i saw young and old, black and white. I saw members of the motorcycle club, but i also saw the elders of church, when you have that Cross Generational representation for a tragedy, thats when you realize you tap into a national empathy. If you continue to hold on to that empathy, then you will begin to see progress. Its only when the conversation when its couched as a black problem, you dont see that empathy. Ths an american problem that needs to be addressed. It is an american problem. I dont think its choosing sides. Its a big enough problem that the white house chose to send three representatives here today. Why is that. Don, everyone recognizes this is really a turning point, maybe a tipping point. We have seen so much death, mayhem, civil disobedience and dysfunction. I think this is a day that we celebrate and understand that mike brown was a young man. He had a life, perhaps a good huge life before him. He was tragically killed. We dont know everything yet, don, and i think we have to constantly caution and be patient until the Justice System is completely worked out, but today i think we should focus on the Home Going Service, a part celebration, a part funeral. What they are going to, talk about mike brown, his life, the people he made laugh, the future that he was thinking about when he decided to get his grades in order, to complete his graduation requirements. I think were going to hear about mike brown the way his family wants him to be remembered, and hopefully today wealthy about the mike browns in our own lives and our community and hearts and make sure we though them the love, the support that they need to ensure that these children will have a future and im glad that the white house sent three representatives. Donna lets talk about the role of women too in all this. I had a chance to sit down with Michael Browns mother, and seen bell and Trayvon Martins mother yesterday. It was the first time they had met Lesley Mcspadden, Michael Browns mother. It was amazing to see. What can these women offer you and they talked about mothers, what mothers can offer, but can you talk to me about girl power please and how thats going to help her get through this . I saw your interview and it was a really wonderful interview, don, thank you for taking time out to bring those women together and im sure if you had more time, you will bring many of the other mothers who are still grieving today the loss of their boys or their little girls. They see Sabrina Fulton just hold Lesley Mcspadden and encourage you, remember what you will talk about in the kitchen when hes not there. She really did lift up ms. Mcspadden. I saw when she walked in, i know its going to be a long, long time, a long grieving process, but i think those mothers were there to just remind her that her boy may not be with her physically but will always be with her spiritually. For women, girls, for all of us who care for our men, our brothers, our fathers, our sons, our nephews, we love them. We want to help them build a future, a future life. We want to help out young girls as well. But we are our brothers keepers and our sisters as well and having those women bond and to come together, i hope that she nodes, ms. Leslie, that she can pick up the phone next week, when the media is gone, when the protesters and gone, the celebrities and stars are gone, they will be there for her because thats what sisters do. We stick together. Yeah. I got to get a break. You want to say something, l. Z. While its important to talk about the grieving mothers, dont forget these men have fathers. We are grieving as well. The fathers are grieving as well. Thats a great point to take us to break. Were going to be back with our continuing coverage of remembering Michael Brown, the home going ceremony live here on cnn right hereafter a quick break. Wewere trying ourls. Best to be role models. Over the weekend, hackers took down sewny playstation and other on line gaming networks, they didnt stop there. An American Airlines flight with a sony executive on board was forced to land on sunday after a same group sent out a tweet claiming there were explosives on that airplane. Our aviation expert renee march be is following the story. Michaela and john were talking about American Airlines flight 362 was supposed to go from dallas to san diego but it was forced to divert to phoenix. Add on to that two f 16 fighter jets were scrambled to monitor the plane as it landed and it appears to be all because of a group of hackers who call themselves lizard squad. The president of sonny on line entertain he was on this plane and the hackers knew it, because they tweeted directly at him. This is what the group tweeted. It says we have been receiving reports that j smedleys plain from dfw so San Francisco has explosives on board, please look into this. We know the plane landed safely. The executive did send out his own tweet. It read my plane was diverted. Not going to discuss more than that. Justice will find these guys. We do know that the fbi is now investigating. Heres the thing and im not condoning any kind of crime, messing with video games seems hugely different than diverting a plane which is tan amount to a Terror Threat there. What are authorities saying . They are investigating and Law Enforcement official confirmed to cnn that obviously there were no explosives on board. It turned out to be a hoax. But that being said, they say that they are moving forward with this investigation so thats very much under way. This seems to scream back story. What is the history between sony and maybe this particular executive and this hacking group, they call it lizard group . Right. I spoke to even some of our folks in our Tech Department hadnt heard of this group as yet. People know about them now, but we dont know of any prior situation between sony and this group. Were not aware of any prior relationship. We do know they have targeted not only sony but other online networks. They are trying to get ahold of a network of computers so they can initiate these attacks. The big picture they want to take down as many of these networks as they possibly can, but again to the back story we are not aware of one at least not at this point. Oh, my goodness. Imagine you are on that flight, you are mg your business, you are trying to head hope and you get word theres an Emergency Landing to find out that this threat was tweeted. Something is missing here. People mess with on line games thats one thing, taking down a plane is another thing. Thanks to real estate nay for that. Renee 0 for that. All forng, weve been watching the service for mike brown.
