He gave his side of the story after Donald Sterling made startling allegations this week about the nba legend. Once again dragging him into the mess that is swirling around the embattled clippers owner. Magic johnson sat down with our anderson cooper. A lot of us were hanging on these words. Whats the right way to respond to someone who trashes the last 23 years of your life . Magic johnson says it is more than personal for him. He felt like he needed to defend not just himself but the africanamerican community. Lets play you some of this exclusive cnn interview. Heres a man who you dont know if i should say this. He acts so holy. He made love to every girl in every city in america and he had aids and when he had those aids, i went to my synagogue and i prayed for him. I hoped he could live and be well. I didnt criticize him. I could have. Is he an example for children . Im embarrassed to even play this in front of you. You know, heres a man who we would think would be educated and a man who is smart enough to build this type of wealth and own a team to have an incredible platform to change the world. Hes doing it in a negative way. First of all, 22 years ago i announced i did have hiv. I came out like a man. I told the world. Because of the i have virus i have obtained, i will have to retire from the lakers today. I didnt blame nobody else. I understood what i did was wrong, okay. I announced that to the world. I hoped i was able to help people in doing that. I think i did. You helped countless numbers of people. Ive been to hospice, hospitals hugging people with hiv and aids before they were dying or people who didnt know if they could live a long time. I hugged them. I counseled them. I talked to them. I talked to them about taking their meds and not making sure that they stay on their regimen which is key. I talked to a lot of young people who just got hiv and were thinking about committing suicide. I tried to talk them out of that. And then we had given away over 15 million, my foundation. Sports attorney David Cornwell is here along with mo ivory. Lets talk about this. Such an interesting place that Magic Johnson found himself in last night going into this interview. Having to respond to comments that were both outrageous but also really completely unprovoked. What did he need to do do you think . What he did is what he needed to do. He protected or defended himself as well as the africanamerican community. White people respect Magic Johnson as well. I think he was an incredibly effective rebuttal to the racist rant that Donald Sterling made just by sitting there. Johnson, the dignified successful businessman after his career. So i think he was very effective in rebutting everything that Donald Sterling said. A lot of folks said its a shame had had to get to the point that he had to defend himself unprovoked. When you listen, mo, throughout that hour, magic repeatedly said this isnt about me. That was between sterling and this love interest, if you will. He kept pushing that. Do you think he achieved it . Do you think he sufficiently put that to bed . To take himself out of the fray of this . I think he did. He did an incredible job in building his own credibility last night. I thought the only extra thing he could have done that would have made it better is if he would have had his wife with him sitting there like a complete united. Some issues obviously hiv and stuff came up. Thats very personal. I thought that would have put icing on the cake. He did it because this is about me. Why drag her in. He already got dragged into it. It would have been, wow, look how united we were as a family. He did a great job. He was distancing himself from it. I was talking to john earlier. There were certain trigger things that magic said that made me want to respond because of the journalist in me. I pulled back. This isnt about Magic Johnson. This is really about him just coming back and making the comments about sterling pulling him into this conversation and not really about some of the things he said like im a leader in the black community. Some things i wanted to comment on but i thought, you know what . Its not really the time and its not about attacking magic or breaking down every word that he says. But absent from the conversation were some of the charges leveled by sterling that he went to every city and had whatever with every woman in every city. Magic didnt touch that. Anderson didnt touch that. It was a promagic interview. It was clear that anderson was a fan of imagine inmagic and a co place to be and wouldnt push too hard. There was a time when press conference when he announced that he hiv that came up that more could have gone into it because the truth is what Donald Sterling said about it is still true. He did do those things and he did recover from it. Im not trying to attack magic. Lets deal with the truth too. Magic didnt do anything wrong. To your point, why should he dignify what sterling said what do you mean he didnt do anything wrong . Hes made mistakes like anybody else has. Thats not wrong. You cant say just because hes Magic Johnson that those things can be ignored. Im not saying that. He destigmatized having hiv. He destigmatized the notion that black people cant be successful. He did it all just sitting there by the way he presented himself. You know what . This is clearly a fight and discussion we need to have more of. You guys stick around. The deadly mers virus that causes respiratory and kidney problems is spreading worldwide. Two cases here in the u. S. We just learned the netherlands reported its first case. This has now spread to 18 countries. Two u. S. Healthcare workers exposed to one of the patients sick with mers in orlando tested negative for mers. Well have more with the cdc scientists leading the effort to stop this in just a little bit. Hot, dry, windy conditions that fed fires in california this week forecast to return today. Right now the more than 20,000 people who were evacuated from the wildfire areas around san diego are returning home. All evacuation orders related to the 800acre fire have been lifted. The wildfire is only 5 contained but it is no longer an imminent threat to homes. A federal judge has declared idahos ban on samesex marriage to be unconstitutional. The judges order will take effect from friday morning unless the state appeals. The order will knock down idaho state laws and state constitutional amendment passed in 2006. Samesex marriage is legal in 17 states and in the district of columbia. A desperate race against time to save more than 100 coal Authorities Say they are trapped in a shaft about twothirds of a mile underground. You are looking at live pictures right now from turkey. Hundreds of other miners are confirmed dead in this disaster. What a disaster it is. A transformer blew deep inside this mine igniting a fire. That fire still burning right now and getting in the way of this rescue. Look at those people gathered around. Shaping up to be the worst mining disaster in turkeys history. Two little boys recovering after a terrifying flight inside their backyard bouncy house. Look at that. That inflatable trampoline rose more than 15 feet after a gust of wind uprooted its stakes. The boys, ages 5 and 6, tumbled on a street into a parking lot and were taken to a hospital in serious condition. A neighbor says the incident was like a horror movie. Police calling it an accident. Those aids as Donald Sterling said and his involvement in the black community and magic said he thought he and Donald Sterling were friends which made these comments even more disappointing for him. Well play more for you of his exclusive interview with anderson cooper. Do you have advice for Donald Sterling and what would you say to him . He finally apologized. He wasnt apologized to me personally. Even if i dont get it, im fine with that. Look, youre 80 years old. Youve had a tremendous life. Right. And youre going to benefit whatever the price tag is from this team. Sell it. Go ahead and enjoy the rest of your life. You know, youre fighting a battle that you cant win. And then youre putting your family in a tough situation as well. Its not just him. Hes making his family members look bad by going out and saying these things about myself, africanamericans, on and on and on. If i was him, i would just benefit from the fruits of my labor and just take the money and go and enjoy your life. Lets continue our conversation with David Cornwell and mo ivory. David, theres his advice for magic. Take your money. Enjoy retirement. Enjoy life. Do you think thats likely that sterling is going to do that . Absolutely. Hes out. Do you think he wont put up a fight . Even if he puts up a fight, hes out. By the beginning of next season, Donald Sterling will no longer be the owner of the los angeles clippers. If hes involved in a lawsuit, thats something else. Its collateral. The nba is committed to getting him out. Especially now. Mo, i get a sense that youre not satisfied here. Youve been saying this whole issue has brought up some discussions we need to be having. Are we having them do you think . I dont really think we are. I think that this whole conversation has focused so much around saving the image of the nba, protecting the players and the way they feel about their owner and its really about business. This is really to say like i said yesterday. I dont think this conversation should be shocking to anybody but that we talk about all of those conversations that are going on behind the scenes that are just of the same exact nature. I dont think we have those conversations. Donald sterling brought something out the same way any time theres a racial issue it brings it out. Trayvon, i sat at this desk and we talked about trayvon in that way. I was saying to john earlier that it doesnt seem like we can have this conversation unless it is something egregious. Thats a great point. One thing thats being missed in this discussion is the response of the players. What we saw was the exact opposite of what Donald Sterling said. Players went from being property in his mind to partners in this business that demanded that the business kick him out. I think thats a Significant Development for what unions and players have represented in professional sports over the years. I thought it was interesting how Magic Johnson said he would never go to another clippers game and then a few days later there he was at the clippers game. When something interests us enough, we can put things aside and i wanted to support doc rivers and players. Youre a basketball guy. You wanted to go. What you said wasnt relevant anymore. I think there are a lot of bigger issues and i think were brushing i got on you because youre promagic. There are different issues and maybe not to bring up right now but this is a doorway to start a conversation that we constantly do not have and we try to pretend like we want to have it. It only comes up and then the door closes. Thats only half of the story. Im not just proirvin. Im antiDonald Sterling. But then you have to be antieverybody that has these conversations that are going on in private that were just not privy to which is many. We did hear this one and we cant unhear it. You say that because it was in the public space, it became part of the public consciousness. I disagree with mo. One size fits all. What happened here is that his private conversation was made public. Now he has to deal with the consequences. No question others are having private conversations of the same type we dont hear about. Well deal with in some other way. One size does not fit all. I dont know. I feel like you two will be back with us and well be talking more about this. I would like that. Can we do that . At least 238 coal miners are dead and 120 others are trapped deep underground. Managers believe 787 people were inside that mine when a transformer blew up yesterday. Now, two people were rescued just hours ago. Our ivan watson is on the scene. Reporter throughout the afternoon rescue workers have been bringing workers out of the coal mine on stretchers carrying them down these small steps. On occasion we can hear members of the crowd there gathered around the ambulance at the entrance to the mine shaft yelling as the workers are brought out and from this Vantage Point its very difficult to tell the Health Condition of the people as theyre being brought out. Sadly, tragically, four more people have died as a result of this mine disaster than survivors have been brought out. Turkish government estimating a bit over 90 survivors brought out while the death toll has steadily increased to at least 238 People Killed as a result of what Authorities Say was an electrical fire that broke out on tuesday reportedly during a shift change when you would have many, many hundreds more coal miners down at the bottom of the shaft. I talked to some of the rescue workers. They say that there are up to five miles of alleyways and galleries down there. The rescue workers that i talked to who were down in the mines overnight that recovered bodies of six coal miners say there was a vast amount of smoke down there as a result of the fire. They could only operate there with oxygen tanks and that the temperatures were high as well. The turkish Prime Minister paid a visit to this location. Hes come out his government has called for three days of mourning. He also promised an investigation into this mine. And did say that last march health and safety inspectors had come here and declared it free and clean and safe. However, a local lawmaker on april 29th submitted a motion to investigate the mine amid reports of safety problems and that motion was overturned in the turkish parliament. Theres already debate and controversy brewing even as this desperate rescue effort continues as people try to save some of the more than 100 coal miners who are still believed to be trapped deep beneath the mountain here at this mine outside of the western turkish city. Scientists here and abroad on high alert this morning. Why . Mers, middle east respiratory syndrome can lead to pneumonia or kidney failure. Today two Florida Health care workers that went to the e. R. After coming into contact with a mers patient tested negative. 20 other Health Care Workers in the orlando area are now being tested. A Healthcare Worker in indiana was the first confirmed case in the United States. The fear over this virus are so high that before defense secretary chuckle haggel met wih the president , everyone in the room was looked at for fever. Good to have you both with us. First of all, elizabeth, i want to begin with you. The cdc is contacting anybody who they believe were passengers on the very same flights as those two u. S. Patients confirmed to have mers. Do we have any update on how these patients are doing . The cases in indiana where there was a Healthcare Worker who flew from saudi arabia to indiana, they contacted all of those people on the flight with that patient and theyre all fine. That really speaks to how difficult it is to transmit this virus. Here this patient was on the plane for many hours for a period of time with these patients and none of them it appears got sick. The florida patient is more complicated. There were several flights, london to boston, boston to atlanta, atlanta to orlando and the cdc right now is in the process of contacting every passenger who was on those flights to see how theyre feeling and who ask them to give blood specimens. The number of actual cases in the u. S. , low Single Digits at this point. Number is not high. Explain to us why there is so much concern and who exactly is at risk here. Well, any time you have a virus that is emerged over two years ago and seen in multiple countries and travelers and Healthcare Workers and has a high fatality rate and really has no vaccine or treatment, we are concerned. Weve been expecting that there could be possible cases returning to the United States and we have been preparing for that. Doctor, you say no vaccine and i think that gives many of us a bit of panic. I want to ask what is being done in terms of infection protection and in terms of control. Well, thats exactly right. The most important thing is if you identify a patient is making sure they are protected and make sure that they are not able to give the infection to somebody else. That is why weve developed very careful Infection Control guidance that weve put out for over a year and a half and have let doctors all around the country know about so if they do identify a patient, that patient is put into a very strict Infection Control areas and so that no one else can be exposed to that person. Thats our best way of preventing onward transmission of this virus. The high mortality rate has people so concerned here. However, this is not something that passes that easily from person to person. How do you get this . Remind us. We dont really know 100 . We think that there are some cases who have contact with camels. Some patients have had exposure through camels most likely. The other big source is Health Care Facilities and a majority of the cases it appears now have had some contact with Healthcare Facilities and that is similar to what we saw in 2002 and 2003 with sars so thats very concerning and why we are preparing and have Infection Control information on the web and make sure that if a someone comes to the United States with a possible case, were prepared. Elizabeth, real quickly. Give people an idea at home the symptoms to keep lookout for. Right. The symptoms are cough and fever and some other flulike symptoms. When i say these symptoms, i think everyone in the cohen family had those this past winter. Those are so common. So the people who really need to be concerned are people who are family members of someone who has been confirmed with mers and only two cases so there arent that many of those. Healthcare workers who have taken care of people with mers who have those symptoms. If i were one of them, i would be worried. For most of us, its not a concern. Thank you so very much. Thats exactly what police say. This was a gust of wind. And how do you even prepare for that . You really cant. Bottom line, you said they were staked in because they do come with stakes. Youre supposed to secure it to the ground. The absolutely, we looked into the history of this, how often does it happen. It turns out a doctor out of ohio did a study and looked at from 1995 to 2010 at the injuries, and he found there were between 21 to 30 injuries on an average day. He did make some recommendations. A few things he said is anchor the house properly so you make sure you use everything that is in that packet properly. Allow the sameaged children to play together. And prohibit horseplay in those little houses. Prohibit horseplay. My problem with bouncy houses are when theyre on the ground, when my two 7yearolds enter, two will enter, one will leave. Its the deepest happiest feeling in the world. That relationship ended. When she met the young and ambitious john kennedy, she wrote about that too. Hes like my father in a way. Loves to chase and is bored with the conquest and once married needs proof hes still attractive so flirts with other women and resents you. She added to one letter, new address, please note. Father leonard died in 1964 and most of all the letters reveal a deep affection between the young woman and the aging priest. Not only that, they were sent to a priest. So based on what you know, all of your research into her and her family, how do you think shed feel about the fact these are now going public . Well, i think she was a very private person, particularly because we know Jackie Kennedy after the assassination. And so a lot of her feelings about the assassination were kept private for more than 50 years. About ten years ago, i wrote my book about the kennedys. I had another priest, a jesuit, who had a similar experience with father leonard, whos also mentioned in my book. She was trying to struggle, trying to figure out, after watching her husband being killed before her eyes just exactly how something this horrific could have happened if there was a loving god. And i think thats what we see here. A very, very human Jackie Kennedy trying to express her feelings to a priest. Were obsessed with knowing about this family and this couple in this nation. And even around the world. But i cant help but feel as though were somehow betraying her legacy, having these innermost admissions auctioned off. Has there been any reaction from the family about this . Well, i know the letters that i have from father mcsorley were at the georgetown library. We had a press conference. Right after that, the Kennedy Family who said to me talk to father mcsorley actually closed down the access to those letters. I think its very important history 50 years after the assassination have access we as americans understand the consequence of arguably one of the greatest crimes of the 20th century. Fair enough, but these are given to a priest, right. When you think about those because you think about how isolating her life would have been. She wouldnt have been able to share some of those innermost thoughts with family members or a girlfriend. But to a priest, it seems it seems that those things should be kept private. Well, priests are allowed to be friends. Theres nothing in these letters, either to father mcsorley or to father leonard who that violates any tenets of the catholic church. I know that from having that experience ten years ago with the letters that i have. I just think its very important that history understands what happens. There are tons of letters by many public figures that are in libraries around the country. And i think this just adds to our understanding of a very important event.
