Have more to share later on. I want to bring in our senior crime and justice correspondent Shimon Prokupecz shimon, what more are you hearing there . We know that this happened before the bank was open around 8 30, which gives us a little bit of a clue of what may have been going on and who the suspect who is now dead is right. And by all accounts at this point based on what were hearing from witnesses and Law Enforcement, this is quite a chaotic scene. Police officers arriving and then within minutes that they were there they had encountered. According to police. They were fired upon. There were gunshots , and then we have seen indications where glass has been broken at the front. What appears to be the front of this bank has happened. As you said around 8 30 this morning before the bank was open for business. Were hearing from people inside the bank having to hide inside the vault the banks vault to try and protect themselves and police. We believe this point encountered the gunman as to how the gunman died. And ultimately we dont know yet. Were waiting to learn more. From police, but its five dead, six injured, according to police, including a police officer, who was also injured. And so hopefully here in the next few minutes. Were certainly hoping to learn more information. Certainly you can tell early on. When police got there, they went right into action going towards the gunfire. It appears then also searching throughout that area. Theres residential buildings. Theres a parking lot other businesses. Everything was shut down. The most of that area was courting off and shut down. We are going to go straight to the police, who are giving a Press Conference. Louisville metro safe received a report of shots fired and a possible active shooter at 3 33 East Main Street at the Old National Bank. Within three minutes of being dispatched. Officers arrived on scene and encountered the suspect almost immediately still firing gun gunshots. Officers exchanged gunshots with that suspect and ultimately, the suspect did die at the scene. Were trying to confirm if that suspect died of a self inflicted Gunshot Wound or was killed by officers at this time. At least two officers were shot during the exchange of gunfire. One is currently in surgery at university of local hospital. At least four more victims were confirmed to be deceased inside the location, as well as eight that are now currently being treated at the University Hospital to our critical one of those being the officer were currently working to identify all of the victims, work with their families for reunification and provide services to the families and the victims. The investigation i want to reiterate is ongoing. This will be a long scene, it will take pretty much into the night so i still asked that the public avoid the area. I want to reiterate that there is no active threat. We believe this is a lone gunman involved in this that did have a connection to the bank. Were trying to establish what the connection was to the business, but it appears he was a previous employee. Um it is clear. From the officers response that they absolutely saved peoples lives. This is a tragic event. But it was. It was the heroic response of officers that made sure that no more people were more seriously injured than what happened. We will continue to provide updates as soon as possible. We will have another Press Briefing following this at three p. M. Today. I will turn it over to mayor. Craig greenberg at this time. Thank you, deputy Chief Humphrey. First i asked that. Everyone around our city around the country around the world. Pray with us. For those who are currently at ufl hospital. Injured. Fighting for their lives as a result. Of another. Act of gun violence. And i want to thank all of the First Responders, the brave and heroic men and women of l mpd. Who, thanks to their efforts. Quickly responded to the emergency call. And as you just heard from deputy Chief Humphrey without a doubt their actions saved lives. There will be a lot more information we are able to provide as the day goes on. But i want everyone in the city to know that not withstanding tragedies like today. When multiple people are killed by gun violence. Notwithstanding tragedies when individuals are killed by gun violence. Our community will continue to come together. We will find ways to love and support one another and the families and friends who have been directly impacted. By these acts of gun violence, and we will come together as a community. To work to prevent these horrific acts. Of gun violence from continuing here and around the state. I want to thank again. Everyone at el mpd from the local Fire Department from e. M s. From the state agencies and now federal agencies that are also involved. We are a safer community. We are stronger community. Thanks to the work of our Law Enforcement. And again. My prayers go out to the families. Who have lost loved ones today. My prayers go out to the officers who are at the hospital right now. And my thanks for all of them. Through with together. We will get through this together. Finally i want to introduce governor bashir. He was joined us and he was assisting with the efforts, governor. I want to start by thanking the brave heroes in lm p d and our other responding organizations. L npd made it to this scene in a matter of minutes after receiving the call , and there is no doubt in my mind that their. And we have at least one officer in surgery right now, that is there. Because he took those actions to try to protect the people of louisville. I want to thank Louisville Fire louisville, metro e. M s and emergency management, the louisville Sheriffs Office for the immediate response. Theyve now been joined by the fbi, atf. Homeland security. Kentucky state police have requested the Louisville Office of safe and healthy neighborhoods in this response. This is awful. I have a very close friend that didnt make it today. And i have another close friend who didnt either and one whos at the hospital. But i hope is going to make it through. So when we talk about praying, i hope people will for those that we. Are hoping can make it through the surgeries that theyre going through. And then weve got to do what we have done these last three years after everything. Weve got to wrap our arms around these families. And everybody who needs it. Dont be afraid to get some help. Our bodies and our minds are not meant. To go through these types of tragedies. And so i hope that all the brave officers stepped into the line of fire. Theyre worried about one of their fellow officers. Well reach out for help when they need it. I hope everyone of those Bank Employees and folks in that building one that i know well. And my a g campaign was out of that building. Virtually everyone in it. Thats my bank. I hope that they will all reach out. And get the help that they need a lot of people that are hurting today. And if we have a place to focus our energy, i hope it is to surround them with the love. And the compassion. That we have been so good at showing one another. I want people to know that well, today is a horrific act. I do believe that this is a safe community. With officers doing their very best each and every day, and thats what we saw here. Yes, i know that there are steps that the Police Department is taking to do things better after recent report, but we certainly saw i think the very best from them today. And i want to thank them and all our other Law Enforcement officers. Responding and doing their best. Try to save some of my friends and many others. Thank you all. Any questions . The other one that it appears to be, Uh Non Critical Injuries at this time. Im not sure on the status of that yet would be part of investigation. Excuse me. It appears the shooter was. I dont know if theres an active employee or former employee, but the shooter did have a connection to the to the location. No. I dont know that. He asked. Was there any form of security at the bank . We dont know that either. That will be part of the investigation. So one more. We have Resources Available to make sure the rest of the city has kept safe and i do want to reiterate that were managing our resources with the state, local and federal partners to make sure that all services to the city maintained while were maintaining the scene at the same time. So thank you. The next update will be at three oclock. Thank you. Alright. We just received quite a bit of new and additional information. All of it basically heart wrenching. About what . Were hearing here. As the governor put it. This is awful. The governors mean just such a tragic day In Louisville. The governor has a connection himself to people in the bank. At least two people the governor said had died Close Friends of his, but the latest that we learned from this Press Conference, the latest update very importantly. Is that there are four victims who are dead. The gunman is also deceased. Eight people are being treated at the local hospital. Two people in Critical Condition. One of those in Critical Condition is an officer who responded to the scene there. At least two officers shot and one of them is in surgery. As we speak. Let me bring in right now. Go ahead, john. Im sorry piece of information. The officer there just said it does appear that the shooter was a previous employee of the bank. He said that the shooter had a connection to the bank. It seems that appears at previous employee also said that it took the police three minutes to show up when they arrived. The shooter inside, obviously was still firing, still firing and thats what they encountered upon arrival. Joining us right now is cnn senior Law Enforcement analyst former Deputy Director of the fbi andrew mccabe. Cnn National Security analyst juliette kayyem. John miller sticking it was here with us throughout this Press Conference listening to all of this, andy your reaction to what weve just learned the latest update from louisville. Yeah. So obviously a solid Press Conference by the chief. Theyre giving us some really relevant information taking couple questions, but then getting off the stage and letting us no one will be back. Um as far as the incident is concerned, i mean, what weve heard described is you can you can only imagine how youre in violent. The scene was that these Police Police officers showed up on only three minutes from the phone call until they arrive on scene, which is um, you know, really a pretty pretty remarkable Response Time and the and the shots are still being fired. As they arrive. They immediately deploy their own weapons gain entry to the building and one way or another. Weve seen those windows shot out on the front side of the building. Uh engaged with the shooter and then the shooter is killed. Not. Its not clear yet whether he was killed from Police Gunfire or if he took his own life. Obviously well learn more about that as we go forward. Um just, you know , maybe the 15th Mass Shooting in the 1st 10 days of this month. Um what were seeing around the country now or more and more. Fast effective lethal responses by Law Enforcement and yet they are still and always will be behind the first shots. The first acts of violence and potentially the first deaths and thats how you get situations like we have today, and i have to say it is getting harder and harder to find anyone who doesnt have a personal connection. To a shooting like this, including the Kentucky Governor, andy bashir, who said, i have a very close friend who didnt make it today. And then got emotional and appeared to also say another who didnt also and also one who was in surgery right now. Governor bashir his Campaign Office when he ran for a g was in that building, he said. Its his bank that is the bank he uses. So he has a personal connection there. Juliet we did get that bit of information where the shooter appears to have been a previous employee. Yes and relevant. One aspect of this, which is of Course Motive as we were discussing last hour, just historically, as someone who you know, studies these kinds of crisis. You just dont see mass casualty events related to bank robberies, mostly because the motive is to get the money and use it at some stage. And think personnel are trained. Uh and they know that in other words, they will not engage the shooter. They will give the shoot the person money and they want them to go. So this clearly at least from what we knew an hour ago. Look different than than what we what we know about robberies. We now know it is, it is what we would call a traditional Workplace Violence event picking up on what andy said mckay three minutes. Three minutes is really fast. Its excellent, uh, Law Enforcement Response Time and you dont get better than that. And we have this many dead and probably others who may not make it and so we can look at motive. All the all the time we want, but we do have a very quick probably relatively mostly perfect response. And still we have this many dead. I want to just say two things about the people that you saw recall three people that you saw just because these does matter. Bashir is known as the consoler in chief amongst governors who i work with, because the state has been hit a lot by Natural Disasters and crime and other instances he is he knows what hes doing. And i thought he performed successfully in that regard. The mayor mayor greenberg is trying to bring louisville back to life. And so they want to tell the community that this is a safe community. And then the Police Department is under a new as of last month. Moment of justice review or complaints regarding civil rights violations, so they come to this as well with a little bit of history, which the governor mentioned. Thats the dynamics that you saw today, all of them unified to find out what happened and then to have the larger discussion about why does this keep happening . John miller. Youre sitting through. You were watching this Press Conferences of whats your reaction to kind of the new Additional Details that we heard youve been hearing some more information from your sources as well confirms a lot of what we were building up to before the Press Conference, which is they arrived and were immediately confronted by the shooter shooting. Um they took immediate action to enter had to breach the bank with breaching tools, sledgehammers and so on to get through, um, confronted the shooter. There is the question that deputy chief Paul Humphreys raised. Did they did police shoot him in that confrontation, or did he take his own life . Im still not clear. What we do know is hes a former or current employee of the bank, according to deputy chief humphries, um understand him to be a portfolio , a Syndicate Manager and Portfolio Specialist who started at the bank in 2018, as an intern worked his way up into a significant position and apparently, as juliet said, this is classic Workplace Violence. Um what were told is he was either a former employee or about to become one. It could explain something that weve grappled with in our conversations here this morning, which is if the bank doesnt open till nine. A. M. How did the shooter get in . As a current employee or former employee. He would have been recognized. Somebody may have unlocked the drawer to let him in. So were were seeing a picture that is starting to become a richer picture and a little clearer as to motive, which is going to be personal against the bank or personal against the people inside, and now there are eight people injured. I think we learned there are more people injured, two critical critical, including surgery right now, including one whos still in surgery. Lets listen to a little bit of sound. I think this is a person whose wife if im not mistaken, was inside of the bank at the time. Shes at the bank at this building. Their protocol is to get into the vault. Me and her have had that conversation several times. Ah hit the panic button. Go to the vault. Dont fight. Dont do anything lock yourself up hard and let it go. Get into the vault. They followed protocol clearly, but obviously when somebody has a deadly weapon, you cant run fast enough. Mr mccabe. I know you are standing by on all of this. I think this is were at like 129 Mass Shootings in this country so far this year. And thats what more than the days of the year that weve already been through. This is different, though, than weve seen in the recent past. It looks like its potentially someone who was disgruntled. What are you learning . Well i mean, thats right, sarah. Its it is, indeed you know, in the most kind of specific details, its different from the last Mass Shooting that we all got together to talk about, um, the shooting in in nashville. The covenant school. Um but every one of these is unique in some respect each one of these um, mass shooters are different people and potentially carry different motivations, different grievances, different Mental Health challenges. Whatever that mixture might be. That brings them to this moment whether unleashing this kind of violence on their fellow citizens, but there are also some some strong similarities. Similarity is the. Easy and in most cases as weve seen lawful access to high powered military weapons now we dont know what the we havent heard any details about what the shooter was using in this shooting, and well, of course, learned that as we go a little bit further through the day, but you know the thing that links all of our problems with gun violence in this country, be they Mass Shootings. Beit street crime be it. Suicide by firearm is the easy availability. Uh the you know how easy it is for every american to acquire these incredibly lethal weapons. So you know, yes. Each one of these situations is different, and its important for us to know as much as we can about them and about the shooters who commit them. Uh but i think its also important to step back and look at those commonalities. Just address. Whats undeniable people get fired around the world and are mad about it every day and thousands. Hundreds of thousands of places people have Mental Illness struggles. In every country in the world. People unfortunately, take their own lives in every country in the world, but no place on earth experiences, the frequency and the mass violence, um and particularly related to firearms, like like we do here in america. Lets talk about the Response Time. I know everyone has kind of highlighted that but to put a fine point on it when i play for everyone, what a moment when you can hear shots ringing out and you can hear the initial response with what appears to be Law Enforcement or security or someone running through running through this video. Lets watch this one more time together. Shooter at night. Get out of your car. And you can you can hear pretty clearly juliet active shooter at the bank. After you hear some of those gunshots ringing out and also then we learned the Response Time from l m. P d. Was three minutes after they were dispatched. They arrived at the scene. Yes so we have a concept in disaster management. Its called extending the runway. Its just a way of thinking about time when these catastrophes happen and what you want to give people the community, the potential victims , its time to get away and that also gives you time to have Law Enforcement come in. So what we know from the eyewitnesses and certainly the Police Reporting people within the bank knew exactly what to do, and some of them got into the vault very quickly. We also know there was a three minutes there was only three minutes for the police to come in. You dont the in terms of time. That is fantastic and still remember. Still a lot of people are dead, and we dont know how many more dead from their injuries who are now at the hospital, and so then that gets to and, uh, director mccabes point, and i and i want to make this clear. Every one of these instances has two questions. What is the motive . What is the means in all of these . What is the motive can be answered differently. We visit a bank robbery. Is it Workplace Violence is it . Uh x y or z . Uh just a disgruntled person. Um we dont know, and theyre going to be different. And if we just focus on that were missing the story of what are the means. And then i look at all the numbers coming out of this year and all the mass unions and all of a sudden the means all look the same. Right and thats where people view this as a political discussion. Look at the three of us very political backgrounds, very different professional backgrounds in terms of safety and security, or analysts on right now, all say, i cant. I cant predict mode of all the time or its going to defer the means you cant deny the means or the same. And so its not political to separate those discussions and simply say we can learn something from the means in terms of being able to give people more time to either. Protect themselves or for police to come. That is, that is how this debate will unfold for the years to come. And of course, we mentioned that Kentucky Governor Andrew Bashir has a connection, he says, he says that he knows to people who did make it from the shooting seemed to suggest he knows to people who were killed there in a third, who was in surgery right now, and i just want to point out that the louisville mayor craig greenberg, survived a shooting at his Campaign Office a year ago. I knew he looked familiar. I spoke to him a year ago when he survived, you know, Murder Attempt at his Campaign Office, so theres an extraordinary tragic connection that so many people have to this. This type of gun violence. Um john miller. You know in mayor greenberg has made you know fighting gun violence, part of his administration in the short period of time throughout the rest of his campaign, and this but as you pointed out, right from the beginning, if you respond in three minutes and there are still five people dead or four people dead. Plus the shooter. It does tell you the limits of even a perfect response. I mean, ive looked at all the studies on this and theyre evolving, unfortunately , because the data set is growing literally week by week, but what we see commonly in the active shooter realm is in the 1st 2. 5 to 4 minutes is usually. The key moments of lethality when the active shooter is engaged with innocent victims before the police get there, even if that response is two minutes and 30 seconds, most of the killing at that point is done and then you know if they engaged the shooter we know those those three outcomes. Either the person surrenders, takes their own life or is or is taken down by police and sometimes killed ah, but that that critical time is why, when they get there, theres really much less assessment. You know, much less of the handling and we saw in places like vivaldi, mostly immediate action rapid deployment, which is what we saw again today, and that takes a tremendous amount of courage because you dont know and you guys are all mentioning. Like how many times we see this over and over and over again. This is the 16th shooting. Since the shooting at Covenant Elementary School in nashville, which seems so recent to all of us, so its happening more like you said. Unfortunately the data set is getting the common threats. Even at the Covenant Elementary School. You saw the governor of that state come on and say. One of the teachers who was killed was supposed to come and have dinner with my wife, you know, so we know these things touch everybody, but were seeing with the volume of activity that theyre beginning to touch the very people that we look to for solutions to this problem, which is the top elected officials in the country. All right, we are getting new information in we are expecting another briefing in just two minutes. We do know that four people have been killed. A shooter is also dead. Eight people injured right now. Two of them in Critical Condition. Uh tragic Mass Shooting In Louisville, kentucky at a bank. Cnn. New central continues right after this. On the next episode of tv. Im dr sanjay gupta, clarissa ward, palestinian denmark. Update now on the Breaking News we are following. Police say at least four people have been killed victims in a Mass Shooting at least eight others injured and at local hospitals in this shooting In Louisville, kentucky. Police say this happened at the Old National Bank, which is right across from Slugger Field In Louisville. Officials also say that the gunman did have a connection to this bank. Saying that he appears to be a previous employee there. Police did confirm moments ago as well. The gunman, the shooter is dead killed. They dont know yet if there was a self inflicted Gunshot Wound or in an interaction with police, but they do believe he acted alone. We also just got a statement from Senate Minority leader mitch mcconnell, a kentucky republican. Of course, riding in a tweet this elaine and i are devastated by the news coming out of louisville this morning. He also says thank you to the l npd and our First Responders for their bravery at the scene. He goes on to say as well that we send our prayers to the victims, their families and the city of louisville as they await more information. Lets get over to Shimon Prokupecz, whos following more detail. More of this as this has been coming in, shimon, one thing weve been talking about on set we heard at the Press Conference was kind of the timeline of how this played out this morning. You have some more information as it relates to the Response Time. Right so almost immediately after 911 call, police responded. They got there within three minutes when they encountered of from what they described the gunman. The shooter. There was an exchange of gunfire. And so thats why theyre saying theyre not certain if the gunman took his on life or if they if they killed them, but certainly the response here was very swift is very quick. And the other interesting thing is that the bank doesnt open for business until about nine a. M. And this happened sometime before that. So one of the things certainly is. How did this person get inside the bank . And that is something that authorities have not yet said. Obviously the number of victims many still remain in the hospitality of the two Police Officers that were injured. One of them is critical. And then the rest of the victims all inside all at the hospital. Do you think it does sound like kate from everything . Were hearing that there were a number of people a number of employees inside this bank. Its unclear if anyone outside of the bank was injured because what happened is after police got to the scene once they were able to contain this one area. They started doing searches nearby buildings nearby areas and so the entire area really like most of this downtown area, which was shut down as they were doing this investigation to make sure that there were no other shooters. But obviously, you know, were now hearing a lot that this shooter had some connection to the bank, either a current employees or former employees. Police in their Press Conference werent sure that obviously is going to be significant because again time and time again, you know, in these instances when we see these Mass Shootings, the perpetrators the shooters end up having some kind of signal, sending some kind of signs that there was an issue that something was going on that someone knew something. And so that all is certainly up in the air right now. And what was this persons relationship to the bank . What happened there . What happened in the days leading up to this . And of course, a lot is going to be made. About the guns and what happened here, but what were also seeing is just, you know, Law Enforcement. Really um , in these situations, not taking anything for granted. Just going at it going towards the gunfire, trying to stop the threat and certainly from what police so far described it paid off in this instance because of their quick actions, the police say the off first initial officers save lives. Cape and its understandable. You know, theres they said, is the in the briefing, shimon. They said that they were they encountered they were encountered. Gunfire heard gunfire as they were approaching the building. In their response. It was an active situation as there are even approaching and youve covered these developing horrible, tragic stories like this, especially in tragic days, like like this one so many times before it is striking when you hear from the governor. His personal connection to this and just how it it is hitting so close to home for so many people. Yeah i know. It is the other thing thats really interesting now and time and time again. Certainly after the yuval the situation you know officers are and when they do these briefings, they are giving us these timelines they normally always do. But now it just seems like they want to make a point to say we got there quickly. We took action quickly and also keep in mind. The louisville Police Department has been heavily scrutinized with the civil rights investigation. The governor briefly mentioned that so this is something that certainly for the Police Department. They want to come out. They want to talk about it their efforts to try and stop this gunman certainly a very tragic situation and that they couldnt get there quicker. But three minutes is a fairly quick time and from everything that the police say here, they took action fairly quickly. Now of course, the investigation what led up to this . Those are very key questions that authorities certainly going to have to try and answer in the coming days. Sure sure, ramon. Thank you for the update. Thanks for the perspective. Sarah john. This is a really emotional moment. Conducting governor andy bashir spoke at the Press Conference, and he said that at the bank location, he lost two friends in the shooting. Take a listen. This is awful. I have a very close friend that didnt make it today. And i have another close friend who didnt either and one whos at the hospital. But i hope is gonna make it through. So when we talk about praying, i hope people will. I want to bring in cnn political commentary. Scott jennings you heard the governor. There he was , you know, breaking his voice cracking because he lost two friends, and there is a third person in critical. John miller brought this point up just a moment ago that you know, these shootings are happening so often Mass Shootings and generally shootings across the country. Were now at more than 145 that its starting to become very personal, because its happening to people close to those with the power to change things. What do you see this doing . If anything, um potentially to change the way things are and i know youre from kentucky yourself. Yeah im here In Louisville. My office is just a couple of miles miles outside of downtown. In fact, if i look out the window over here, i can see that part of downtown where this tragedy occurred. That overhead shot youre seeing in eastern, uh, Downtown Louisville. You see a Baseball Field . Thats the Louisville Slugger field. Thats where our triple a Baseball Team plays and have season tickets. I take my kids there all the time. Thats a very heavily trafficked part of Downtown Louisville. And i think one thing about governor. Bashirs comments that were striking to me is louisville is the biggest city in kentucky. But its a very small town. I mean, everybody here has connections to Everybody Else and governor bashirs previous campaigns. I think had some connection to the bank there. We have a bank in the bottom of our building where i am right now, and some employees downstairs were telling an employee of mine that they knew folks that were at this bank. So its a big city for kentucky. But it it really is a small town and you can see already as Information Filters throughout the community, just the connectivity that people have. To the shooting, so its pretty shocking and pretty tragic. And louisville, by the way, is a city that has for the last several years been one of the more violent cities in america. We have a very high Homicide Rate here anyway, and then you throw this shooting on top of it, and its just a lot of heartbreak for the city will be governor. Bashir said that his campaign for Attorney General was in that building at the Old National Bank and said he knows to people who didnt make it out today. Another one who was being treated in the hospital right now we talked about the mayor. You say the violence that has been in that city. The mayor himself survived a shooting last year during his campaign. Um scott, just just give us a sense, and i know you said youre about a mile or two away right now, if you have a sense of the people youre talking to just how this is hitting there for you, and for others this morning. Well, people are really just stunned because that part of Downtown Louisville is a very common area for people to go go to a baseball game. Its just a couple of blocks from the young center, where the University Of Louisville has some sporting events, including basketball. Theres big concerts there. Its our biggest venue, one of our biggest venues, so that part of Downtown Louisville people go there all the time. Its also very close. To the waterfront on the ohio river and sort of the Waterfront Park area, so people are constantly down there with their families. I think thats one thing about this, this particular about the violence that were having here is this is in an area where you can easily visualize yourself going with your own family with your own kids. You know, this isnt happening. Uh, you know, and somewhere where you cant imagine yourself meeting in a private residence, for instance, this in a public place. Where you could very easily have been taking a walk this morning. This is one of the most beautiful days of the year here so far, you could have been right there. And i think as i have talked to people here in my own office, thats just one of the things about this is. People are just visualizing themselves being in this part of the town and wondering well, what if i had been walking by when this happened, so its very, very sad. Peoples hearts are broken and no one really has any. Any anything other than just shock and heartbreak right now. Here In Louisville. It is hard to put words to it, scott. I mean, you and you and i have often talked about you know about louisville about your about your life in kentucky, and youre in your love of everything of everything In Louisville and in in the state, you know, the governor said during this Press Conference not only about his connection to people who were killed and injured he also said that i want people to know that no today that this is a safe community. Do you feel that way this morning . Well i think theres a raging debate going on In Louisville right now about Homicide Rates, gun violence, the overall crime rate in this town. It was a big feature, actually, in last years race for mayor, we had a mayor for 12 years he left office. The mayors race was an open seat. And so there was a huge debate about crime In Louisville, kentucky, one of the top issues background on the shooting. So, um its just this has been discussed. Um you know, really, for the last several years is, what are we going to do about the violence In Louisville . Now . We havent had Mass Shootings like this one. But we have had a lot of homicides here. Very high Homicide Rate. Um and it was noted by someone earlier, the louisville Police Department has been in the eye of the storm regarding policing procedures here because of the Brianna Taylor case, and then the Department Of Justice report that came out. So when you think about Public Affairs or Political Affairs in a city louisville. I would say as much as any other city in america has been having a Community Conversation in a Community Debate about violence, and so do i feel like parts of the city are violent. Absolutely i mean, there there. This is a common conversation you would have with People Living here. I dont think anybody feels like youre going to walk into a Mass Shooting, you know, like this one at any given time, but certainly this idea of louisville being a violent place has been on the minds of most of its citizens for the last couple of years, several years and certainly people, you know, remember Brianna Taylor and louisville as well. So it has come up time and again. I do want to ask you, john miller. Youre getting some new information and we understand about the shooter who we heard from the Press Conference. Has was an intern just five years ago and apparently did quite well in the company. So the were starting to get a richer picture on the shooters background. This is an individual who came through the Business School at university of alabama. Worked at the Old National Bank in three consecutive summers 2018 2019 2020. Um went into some Study Programs to qualify for full time work came on in 21 has has been there. Um, you know, full time since 22 as a as a syndicate associate and portfolio banker. Im not from the financial realm, but what you see is someone whos out of school, actually someone whos in school and working at the bank summers three times and then the first place he goes to get a job, so you know what emerges is a picture of someone who went to school for and probably planned for and whose whole life was focused on becoming a banker and whose entire young professional life was at that bank. So the were on the precipice of the questions of what happened there. Was he a current employee or former employee . Or was he a current employee who was about to become a former employee . What brought him to the doors of that bank before it opened clearly targeting employees . People who work there . Maybe supervisors, not customers, because the bank wasnt opened yet is that his status as a former employee how he made entry into the bank before it was open because people recognized him or was he still technically on the books there . So some answers starting to emerge . A lot of questions still coming. All right. Were gonna let you dig on some of those questions. John. Stick around and our thanks to Scott Jennings as well. And scott, were glad that you and your family are okay. Just know that were thinking about all the people In Louisville and we are following the Breaking News for people are dead. The Breaking News this morning out of louisville, kentucky. Police say at least four people have been killed, eight others injured after a gunman opened fire at the Old National Bank in Downtown Louisville. Police say officers arrived in just three minutes and engaged with the gunman as soon as they got there. Within three minutes of being dispatched. Officers arrived on scene and encountered the suspect almost immediately still firing gun gun shots without a doubt. Their actions saved lives. But we certainly saw i think the very best from them today. And i want to thank them. The government appears to have had connections with that bank, including working in some capacity there. The gunman we should note is dead, not clear whether he was shot or took his own life. Lets bring in cnn Law Enforcement analyst jonathan wackrow. Jonathan youve been watching this develop over the last several minutes. What questions do you see as needing to be answered at this moment . Well you know, as commissioner milady had just, you know, laid out. You know, were were starting to learn a lot more about the suspect and the connectivity that they had with the bank, either as a current employee or former former employee and really what this is laying out to something thats very formulaic that weve seen time and time again with these types of Workplace Violence incidents. Uh and you know what we do know is that targeted violence, you know, and we can, you know, say that all indication that this is an active targeted violence typically is in response to some type of grievance, so investigators are right now are going to try to identify indicators that you know could have been, you know, keyed in on before this tragic event. From the suspect. You know his engagement with the with the bank, you know, was there any type of problematic behavior . We know that there is a history from an internship and then full Time Employee employment. But was there any type of problematic behavior between a supervisor or co workers that could have been an indicator of or a warning . Sign to . You know this type of engagement . You know those Personality Conflicts are are, you know really important that investigators are going to start keying in on and whether thats direct one on one or two any type of harassment online between supervisors and coworkers. Did this individual have a history of bringing weapons into into the workplace again . You know, we know that that is the common nominator every single time in these in these Mass Shootings, you know, was this something that was a problem for this employee at the bank . Did the employee have a tendency to hold grudges against individuals, co workers . Supervisors etcetera, and again . We just dont know what exactly is happening here. Um, you know, was this a some sort of, you know, mishandled termination. Um so, but investigators thats what theyre looking for. Theyre going to really hone in on, you know what was this type of grievance and was there any type of what investigators in Law Enforcement refer to as concerning communication in advance of this attack that you know, we should have acted upon again a lot. We dont know what we do know, because this follows the same pattern of, you know, sort of the formula for these types of attacks. It puts Law Enforcement investigators on the right track to really under understand what was the motive, an answer why this tragic event happened and theyre starting to head down that road. Fourth that fuller investigation now, jonathan, thank you. As always. We appreciate that. So were going to continue to follow this for dead. The shooter dead as well.
