i know you've got good sources over there in washington, kaitlan, about their assessment of putin right now because this is awkward for the russian leader. he thought they were going to move in quickly and win. that's not happening. >> reporter: i think what they're also trying to look into is what's happening inside moscow with his top military aides. as we know the top military officials have not spoken with the senior officials since they began. they've tried to get in touch with them. they're not answering the phone. and i think when you talk to white house officials, obviously they're speculating on what it could be. there are many reasons here. but they think vladimir putin is frustrated. it's not at all what they expect and it's obviously deeply embarrassing for russia and what they expected. i think that's interesting as well. it is notable how the u.s. is approaching putin and his standing on the global stage.
