Jobless claims. That comes in at 8 30 eastern time. First time filers are seeing falling to 295,000. Also, cbs and dish network are locked in a fierce battle with a deadline of 7 00 p. M. Tonight. If an agreement isnt reached today, cbs is ready to pull its channels from dish in some of the nation aes biggest markets. Andrew. Thanks, becky. Here is whats going on. Disney boosting its annual dividend by 34 to 1. 15 a share. That company posting a record profit and revenues for the last four years now. The stock is up more than 20 just this year alone. Best buy is now selling a struggling China Business to a five star to a domestic real estate farm there. The retailer says it wants to focus on its north american operations. Terms of that deal not disclosed. And aeropostale plans to cut some stores. That Company Offering a weak forecast for the current holiday quarter. And earnings beating the street. That Company Offering a weaker fullyear outlook. Staying on the retail theme, pbh warning its current earnings will fall short of wall street estimates. The companys brands include calvin cline and tommy hilfiger. One story getting a lot of buzz on wall street and main street, that is the drop in Energy Prices. Filtering through to the consumer. Drivers in Oklahoma City fining gas prices below 2 a gallon. Gas buddy. Com reports other parts of the country will soon see the same thing, perhaps a buy as early as this weekend. And one note just quickly on disney, always would be nice to give what the current yield is. So 34 . Wow, that must be a big yielder. Well, it was only yielding 0. 9 . So its a dow component that was never really a yield stock. Dont really understand the shift to deciding to make it more. Because the 34 boost, youre trying to do something, because thats obviously most companies go up 9 the , 10 , 12 . Why it hasnt been a dividend play all along, thats something that companies decide whether theyre a growth stock or dividend stock. Looks like theyre providing more energy to shareholders. A lot of cash flow. But the dividend had been 86 a year on a 93year stock which is yielding less than 1 . So by going up 34 , its barely to 1. 25 . Youve got on explain whats happening. Look, disney has been a fantastic stock, its done very well. You always wonder if this is a way to keep activists at bay. I have a hard time looking at this stock and saying this Company Needs there were two disneys. There was the you guys werent around when this was happening, but way back when i was down in philadelphia with you, remember . But even before then. When remember, it has now gone from 20 up. And anybody who doubted him recanted. And they were paid like 250,000 for but arent you happy . I dont know if that is what theyre doing. The buy back cuts the number of outstanding shares. So immediately, that makes earnings per share go higher. So if you keep the same multiple and you have this it should help things go up. Well, if i could you know, this might be a better tax treatment down the road when you get into a higher bracket some day. Thank you. Im still working on that. Keep trying. You got six jobs right now. Cant decide whether to label him as a high flying guy or not. It just depends on the conversation. Whatever suits the you know. Whatever future at the moment. Exactly. Good for you. I can if you want to ill just get out of the way. Lets check on the markets this morning. Take a look at the futures and see whats been happening. Yesterday with the markets, things looked very strong. Once again this morning, the dow closed at another new high. There are green arrows once again. These are moderate advances at this point with the dow futures up by about 15 points. The nasdaq up by just over 3. 5. If you watch early trade in europe, there are green arrows there, as with well. In germany, the dax is up 0. 4 . The ftse has barely changed. Asia overnight, joe mentioned the nikkei closing at what was it, joe . 7 1 2 year high. This morning, those were the final closing numbers. Im not impressed with 17,000. No, because were looking at 18,000 for the do i, in fact, we were there at one point yesterday. And japan, what is the high, 40, 48, Something Like that . Exactly pop. The other big story this morning, wti down about 26 cents this morning. Youll see at this point the yield looks like its 2. 832 . And the dollar has been the huge story, the strength against the euro. This morning, the dollar is slightly weaker. And gold prices are down 1,202. 30. Excitement building in florida this morning. Jane wells is standing by waiting for orion to will it off. Jane. Andrew, we are now 58 minutes away from what nasa says will be our first step in putting humans on mars. We have some video, i believe, shot from early this morning as they had moved away the mobile service tower. At 1 00 a. M. , Lockheed Martin, which built orion, began powering up the systems. They fueled it. They have now finished fueling it with liquid hydrogen and oxygen. The excitement is hard to believe. Yesterday, nasas administration became emotional talking about what this means. Todays test flight is intentionally unrisky and thats why it is unmanned. Tomorrow morning, youre going to see us press harder than weve pressed before. For the first time in more than 40 years, this nation is going to launch a spacecraft intended to carry humans beyond the earth orbit. Thats a big deal. Being tested is a brand new escape mechanism for a crew, a new heat shield and over 4 november hours, orion will loop the either going 15 times higher than the space station to reach the reentry speed it needs. Temperatures will reach 4,000 degrees before it splashes down in the coast of baha, california. In a twit, Lockheed Martin will be the lead on this first test flight, not nasa. What is the chance that something could go wrong . You know, we can give you the liability number thats prove that its really, really, really, really, tiny numbers, right . But we also have murphy, our careers and lives and its likely that something will go wrong. But thats kind of the goal of the flight test. That is why you do unmanned fefts. Were going to get a weather briefing in about a half hour. It should take off at 7 0 5 eastern. If that happens, it will land around 11 30 eastern. And then the next unmanned test is planned for 2017 or 18. A manned mission, which will probably go around the moon, is scheduled for 2021. And if nasa can keep getting the funding, we could put people on mars in 2030s. Which means theres probably some 10yearold Walking Around right now who will be the first human on mars. Jane, i know this is rocket science, but did that guy say he would be shocked if everything works . Thats not the thing you want to hear if youre the guy getting on the rocket. Because there is so much new they are testing and listen, the things hes thinking about in particular is the Computer Systems. Theyre going to go through the radiation belt. We havent done that in a long time. And the Computer Systems are so much more dense and complex now, theyre more vulnerable to radiation than the Apollo Computers were. So he expects computer resets. Okay. But i guess thats part of the plan. We understand with exploration thats the thing. But wow. Whew its shocking to hear Something Like that. Well, you know, thats why you do tests. They really want to stress this. They want to stress this. All right. Jane, we are excited to watch this. We are excited to see what happens. It is less than an hour and counti counting. There is a little girl that sips the day she was 3 years old, shes been wanting to go to mars. And shes been going to space camp. When nasa plans things, shes sitting there on the panel. She really wants to go to mars. I do not, for my own i still want to go to space camp. You do . I always wanted to go to space camp. My kids now want to go to space camp. Do you know where we were yesterday at the business round table . Did you see how everything was glass and the elevators were glass and you were walking across bridges like the grand canyon where you could look down . When i got there in the morning, i was dark and i didnt notice. But when i was leaving, i was holding the walls. And then the elevator, its a glass shaft that goes down and it comes up and all you can see is this much elevator. I felt like a mouse stepping into a payload i forgot you dont like heights. I dont like talking about it right now. Anyway, speaking of vertigo, markets closing on a high. U. S. Stocks are on track for their best quarterly gains in a year. Yesterday, president obama mentioned like six times or something talking about infrastructure. Isnt keystone infrastructure . I dont know. Anyway, a vary bull yishg tone. I thought the fed may be light in easing, tightening, and now obviously the lower deflationary pressures of oil pric prices, they could keep rates lower longer. Which means equity prices are going higher worldwide. 4. 5 trillion. We could do all the infrastructure. Joining us now is drew mattes, chief economist at you ubs. And darrel kronk. Is this a new dud suit youve got . Haircut. Its the high and tight. I like the cut of your jib. Theres stuff you have to do, right . When you get a promotion. I guess. Ill let you know if that ever happens. Ill tell you, i just started reading this again to try to understand this. I always thought that countries that needed, like wab boost liked to devalue their currency and that that would help with their exports. And im seeing the dollars rise is wreaking havoc in europe and asia and hurting all these places. Why . Yeah. If its in the journal, it might be true. Its not the new york times. Its almost like opposite land out there. The decline in Energy Prices hurts the u. S. Thats not true. I was thinking that yesterday. This is a crazy world were in and we dont know when to like it or not. And a lot countries that complain that were going to do quantitative easing and theyre saying, when you stop quantitative easing, thats going to hurt us. This is why the fed focuses on domestic issues. Can you tell you something . Lower oil prices is probably good for us. Strong dollar. Lower energy. What weve seen in the markets and people have said, wow, this market is disconnected from the economic fundamentales and thats because of the fed. Suddenly, you happen, a lot of economic fundamentals all of a sudden seem to have caught up with where the market is. I dont know if its goldilocks, but it almost seems like the opposite of stagflation. Its better growth, continued low inflation. Isnt there a robe the markets are high . Absolutely. You have the best point for equity markets historically is when you have rising earnings, low inflation, and low but rising Interest Rates. Even europe, much of Continental Europe is catching a bid and starting to move higher. So this disconnect between the economic fundamentals, just because the economic fundamentals are not suggesting great things at the moment does not mean the markets cant do well and, in fact, are doing quite well. Longterm, but shortterm, think back to the u. S. , right . You had the u. S. In the slow growth. For years, 09 through 12, talked about how low growth was. What did the equity markets do . They continued to grind and move higher. Now, growth is catching up. Four of the last five quarters are 3. 5 or better u. S. Gdp growth. Four of the last five. Oh, you cant believe that. That is what i always hear. There was that one quarter where it was negative. And the fact that no one could explain it means that that is the one we should always trust. I am walking people off the ledge every day. We had 2. 5 million jobs last year. The unemployment is dropping like a stone. If janet yellen doesnt watch out, inflation will pick up and walking who off the ledge, everyone . Everyone. Growth is awful. Falling Energy Prices are going to hurt the u. S. Last i checked, north dakota was still a tiny proportion of the u. S. Economy, even with the shale exploration. All these things are going on and everyone is trying to find the cloud instead of looking at the giant silver lining. And its getting harder and harder. Theres not much cloud and theres a heck of a lot of silver lining. None of this makes sense. The price line guy for travel, its really bad for us. Its across all other currencies because travelers are traveling across currency zones. Hold on. How much of their business is international versus u. S. . Probably not much, right . Thats what i was going to say. They do have an international business. They were talking about there are international business. And then no one ever hedges. Drew, yesterday i saw from people saying the june rise in rates is now not going to happen. You know, most Portfolio Managers traders are probably going along that line. Theyre thinking more september december. I will say that and i dont often trust my fellow colleagues in strategies. But almost every one of them are sitting in june. The Wage Inflation was a disappointment. Yeah, its funny, these are the same people who tell us the natural rate of unemployment hasnt changed. Theyre all beginning to worry about Wage Inflation at 5. 5 , r5. 7 . Unless you think the natural rate of unemployment is somewhere above 6 , you shouldnt be thinking about wage. Theyre all starting to get nervous about it. Anyone you talk to is like, you know, what about that average earnings number . Everyone is looking for it. But they shouldnt be looking for it if they believe the Unemployment Rate could go a lot lower. I think youve admitted yesterday maybe he was not exactly correct in saying the fed is behind the curve, and should be raising rates much more. But he bought so much money for you know, people that are trying to return money for Pension Plans and have these assumptions, its a tough environment. Nice, average Hourly Earnings. The jobs report, certainly october and september were nothing. Which is a little bit pent up. So i would say 0. 3 , maybe even 0. 4 , which will get people talking about. 2015 will be lift off year, lift off for the next hour in florida. It will be lift off year, whether its june, september or december. How much are your average Hourly Earnings . At least i got promoted, joe. Im helping. Im trying to help the economy. You dont know whether the average Hourly Earnings, how much is on them . Thats the new title. Yeah, you look a little different. Its the environment. All right, darrel and drew. Thank you. Still to come this hour, the future of media, the fierce battle over how the internet the going to be ruled. At 6 30 eastern time, why some of the nations Biggest Companies having trouble filling jobs. And the girl scouts go digital. How some of our youngest entrepreneurs plan to bring cookie sales to your mobile devices. Squawk box returns with all of that in just a moment. Big movie news this morning, announced minutes ago, title of the 24th James Bond Film, it will she called specter. And you might recall in addition to chaos, the other major enemy and spy genre, spectre was behind some of the dastardly plans to take over the world. Shooting begins on money. Daniel craig is going to play 007 for the fourth time. Pretty good at it. Hes great at it. And its the british spelling of spectre. Yes. I thought that was just its going be released next fall. I would have pronounced it spectry. Yeah. What kind of car was that, do you guys know . Was that an aston martin . I wouldnt be surprised if it was. I bet it has all kinds of neat guns in it, things that have been worked up along the way. Yeah. Violence and all that stuff. But 007, if anybody needs him, he yeah, yeah, right . Even you would let him keep something, right, a club at least. You can use his bare hands. Lets tell but other media news, as well. Cnbc, the network is doing a second live musical, peter pan live. You may remember nbc found huge success with last decembers live rendition of the sound of music. And theres something about doing it live. There is. People waiting for something to happen. You sit at home and it becomes an event that way. We fell into it last year. I remember the magic that that could engender when youre a little kid. What are the proper ages tonight . Kyle is excited at 3, but the girls were excited last year at 9 and 11. 8 00 eastern . I think for this particular version of peter pan, the ages appropriate are probably 2 to 98. There you have it. The sorkin family will be watching. Maybe 1 to 98. Lets talk about the issue of free internet. We also heard from the chairman of Sprint Communications on this issue of Net Neutrality. We paused our investment until we know what the rules are. Its a pause. Lets understand what the rules are. There are concerns people have about how the internet will be treated in the future. And the president articulated we need to do that. He wants to put the internet into regulations written in 1934. We dont believe taking a 1934 regulation for telephone monopoly and applying it on the internet is the right solution. Joining us now, craig moppett. Craig, the president wants one thing. How much impact will he have on the fcc . As Randall Stephenson says, is there a way to thread the needle here . Were talking about two separate things here, right . On the one hand, the advocates for Net Neutrality want the kinds of issues that they were talking about yesterday. But what people are concerned about is theyre concerned with the Collateral Damage or the ancillary issues that come along with reclassification could create issues like price competition. Thats right. Price regulation. And here is the problem. The fcc, while it is a fully empty agency, its still going do need three votes. So that is the logjam were in, right . The democrats want reclassification because obama said has said they want reclassification and the industry is afraid that reclassification would bring with it all this Collateral Damage. Tell us about the damage so we fully understand it. So the extent you believe in the industry and to the extent the youre an analyst, it might be damage to their stock price. Well, theres both. So as Randall Stephenson said yesterday, its very hard to invest if you dont know the rules. And the rules will here is what the process is likely to be, andrew. Start with a proposal of title ii reclassification. Then you have to figure out whether the republicans will do anything in congress to reverse the title to reclassification, including, for example, using the Congressional Review Act that representative barton threatened to use a couple of days ago. Then you have, if they dont, a very long litigation process where you figure out whether the fcc is on solid, legal grounds to reclassify. And then you have a follow on process which is to figure out whether legally the fcc can forebear or not impose price regulation. All that is going to take years. And until the interim, therefore, nobody is going to make any investments. Well, it becomes very difficult to invest. And for equity investors, the challenge is youve got this very longterm question now xh is, number one, will there be some level of price regulation of broadband down the road and does that affect terminal growth rates and multiples of these spots. And, second, will the companies be walking on egg shells afraid to use Pricing Power in broadband for fear that it will exacerbate an already regulatory situation . You now laid out what may happen or should happen. I want to know what you think should happen. Well, look, i what do you see happening . What is the right answer here . I try to avoid saying what i think should happen and try to say what i think will happen. As an analyst, ive got to try to figure out whats going to happen. My guess is whats going to happen is that ultimately, although Randall Stephenson says he thinks the fcc can thread the needle, the fcc probably will vote for a title ii classification. I think the republicans in congress will probably decide this issue doesnt poll well enough to fight for and so its going to go to the courts. Are you arguing that is a mistake or not . Well, its hard to say whether its a mistake. Lets take a longterm view for a second, andrew. You had regulation of the Telecom Infrastructure in this company as a regulated monopoly from 1915 to 1984. Starting in 1984, the pendulum started swing back towards deregulation. Now were starting to see the pendulum swing back towards regulation because its swinging back towards natural monopoly markets. I dont think theres any ambiguity about the fact that the pendulum has started to swing back away from deregulation and towards reregulation. Okay. Greg, the debate will continue, of course. And we will continue talking to you about it. Appreciate it very much. Coming up, why companies are having a hard time filling some jobs. Were going to ask bill george who sits on the boards of exxon and goldman sachs. Squawk box will be right back. A major concern mentioned by several ceos on the show yesterday at the business round table event. Here is what Rex Tillerson had to say about it. We just conducted a survey in conjunction with an organization. What we found is 98 of ceos identify skills as a serious issue for their companies. Today, there are something north of 4 million jobs open simply because we cannot find the right skill of employees to fill those jobs. Bill george is joining us now. Bill, thanks for being here today. Thanks, becky. He talked about how you have 9 million unemployed and you have jobs that you cant find skilled workers for. How do you fix it . Its an obvious dichotomy. I was at the wall street journal ceo Council Earlier this week and thats the number one issue being discussed with ceos. We come to address this problem. The ceos are pragmatists. Theyre going to have to do it. Congress is stalemate, the president will not act. Their number things it could be done, but in washington, action is not being taken. So all the power is at a local level. They work with the local colleges and universities to create trained people. We have a serious problem in this country with job training for todays skills. We just had drew mi atus, chief economist at ubs. He mentioned walking off, you know, when people complain about not being able to find workers, i would say you pay them more. Thats how an economist would fix it. Why doesnt that work in this situation . Because we need skills. All those exxon caterpillar employee employees, yes, theyre not thats not the issue. Exxon is paying a lot of money for skilled people. So is my former company, medtronics. So its not simply the economics. If they people dont exist, you cant fix this overnight. One of the ways you could fix it closely, illegal immigration, got a lot of pushback, becky. He could easily with the stroke of a pen address the problem of illegal immigration. Why not expand our double the number of visas. The folks in silicone valley which is our greatest source of competitiveness are having to move their jobs to india and to china because they cant get skilled workers. And if we could allow people to educate the United States for up to ten years, we send them home, back to china, back towards israel. Might be a couple of republicans in that group, though. Its not if a good idea to no, cant let them stick around. Just kidding. Say that again. Just kidding. You wouldnt laugh. Ill laugh, joe. I dont understand why were and its constraining us all over the country. They have to get sent home. It makes no sense at all. Doug mentioned the same thing, you have these people that train, they come in and five minutes later theyre sitting across the table from you associated with your competitors. Yeah. Now they have oil over 100,000 in india. Frankly, we have the best group of ceos. Far better than my. Theyre going to take the issue and solve the issue working with local people. That is not a bad thing. We need to address these issues that we could have a great situation. Its getting better, but it could be great thou. Thank you very much for joining us. We would love to talk about it again soon. Thank you very much, becky. Good to be with you. Were serving wine to people who appreciate a more sophisticated experience in their concert going. Its an intimate luxury convert environment. We probably break more glasses per square foot than any other place in the world. What goes better than standing up at the end of a show than standing up for an encore than a bunch of broken glass. How many people are you packing in each night . About 350. What kind of artists . Vintage rock and rollers. In the live music says, artists are aging gracefully and want to still play live. Theyre not making any revenue from their records. And so they some of them need the work and some of them just love to play. And they look at the rolling stones. Keith richards is really aging gracefully. He looks pretty good, i think. Compared to what . I dont want to see and rock that are aging gracefully. I want to see the guys that have some miles on them. Most of them do, dont they . Some of them do. Some of them are singing beautifully and aging like a good wine. Have you seen the before and after . I love the pictures. I think he looks very cool. I dont think hes changed in about 20 years. He would be good in peter pan as one of the pirates. And he has played johnny depps father in one of them. Tell us this about the model of this business. Is the money at the door or is the money in the wine . We give mocks of our box office to the talent and our focus is on the f b. F b . Food and beverage. Sorry. We have about 25 vineyards under contract. Instead of making wine in the vineyards, in the more traditional way, were making it where people consume the wine in our facilities. So in the urban setting. So we think this model on the wine making can really work as urban wine making facilities and that gives us an authentic feeling and vibe. And then within that is our concert setting. So we really combining a couple of different businesses into one, making a very unique experience for a sophisticated client. Michael, is this even possible ten years ago before the music fell apart . You mentioned a lot of these artists dont make money off their music, they have to do live performances. I would say it could have been. And there were some venues that were focusing on it. But i think the bar has been raised both on the culinary scene and people are more and more interested in wine. Wine has become a beverage of choice for young and for old. Weve combined these sophisticated tastes into one experience. Whats the brand of the wine . Well, those are whines we made for you. We made them just for us . Yes. We have our own brand . There is a squawk box cab and i think we made a oh, yeah you see how that works. Is there a morning wine over there . Suitable for morning. I would say the blanc is much better. We do make kosher wine. Pretty good idea because he write a time of these. Welcome back to squawk box this morning right here on cnbc, first in business worldwide. Im Andrew Ross Sorkin along with joe kernen and becky quick. The orion spacecraft officially delayed. And jane wells has the details. Hey, were not sure how long. Theres a hold thats continuing right now because of two issues. The launch was supposed to happen in just a few minutes. One, there is apparently a boat in the water east of the launch area that it has to get out there there. Second will i in the second stage of the delta rocket, they need to continue the propellant conditioning. Were told there are no technical issues and the weather is not a problem. There have been concerns about the wind. As soon as they can get the propellant condition and get that boat out of there, then they can launch. The launch window officially opens at 7 05. But it lasts for about two and a half hours so they have time. Back to you. Thank you. We will check in with you in a bit. We have some other breaking news in the meantime. The bank of england leaving its key Interest Rate unchanged. Thats as things were expected. Okay. The European Central bank set to release its latest policy decision. Thats coming up at 7 45 a. M. Eastern time. Since the last meeting data from europe has generally been weak with inflation up. 3 well below the 2 target. Well bring b you that decision and highlights from ecb president mario draghi in just a little bit. Among the other stories were following this hour, investors looking ahead to novembers job reports. Well get a fresh snapshot in just 90 minutes time. The labor departments weekly report on jobless claims is expected to register a decline. Also, ford has expanded its recall of vehicles that are equipped with takata air bags by about 13,000 vehicles bringing the total to 98,000 cars. And best buy will sell its chinabased business to a check in Real Estate Firm for an undisclosed price. They want to focus on its north american business. Back to the markets now. Another alltime high for the dow as it closes in on the 18,000 point level. Were not very far to that number. A lot of people have talked about it, but we always mention Jeremy Siegel as one of the people that said 18,000 before the end of the year. We are less than a hundred points away. Checking the futures right now, were getting 14 or so on the open as far as the dow. The s p called up one and nasdaq just under six. During yesterdays squawk box ceo summit, larry fink joined us to talk about the fed, oil prices, and the impact of all this on the markets. I thought the fed may be late in easing and tightening. Obviously now the pressures of oil prices, they could keep rates lower longer. Which means equity markets are going higher. Worldwide. They continue to go higher. Joining us now, tom lee, fundst a fund fun fundstrat adviser and also a cnbc contributor. Weve talked to a lot of people, tom and rebecca, about some of the weird notions that we have to take this drop in oil prices sort of in a mixed way. Its good for some things but not so good for others. Larry fink said just unequivocally, i wanted to play patriotic music underneath it because it should be good not just for the United States but for the world. Right . Doesnt everyones lower input cost for energy good . Its not good if your russia or norway or venezuela. But if its bad for russia, its good for us. God bless america. Yes. You guys have said this on the show so many times now. Hopefully everybody gets this by now, but Lower Oil Prices are good for the u. S. Consumer and equity markets outside the energy sector. What i look at over the next year, i think were going to go into next year feeling better. The consumer is going to be on the good foot. Were hopefully going to have less of a government drag on gdp. But as japan debases its currency, the dollar gets stronger, thats a head wind for commodity prices. At a certain point the dollars going to get so strong it starts to affect the feds thinking, it starts to affect u. S. Exporters. Then we get congress involved and we get lobbyists saying we need to do something to protect. I think this dollar realally is good for awhile but am some point its going to become a problem. Theres a point where it changes the feds thinking, alters their thinking into we dont need to raise rates. Raise rates less. The dollars only been rising since 2011 only about 10 . But as that continues, it is going to be a reason the fed moves more slowly. So larry fink yesterday was talking about u. S. Yields staying low for a long time. He mentioned Insurance Companies needing to buy Long Duration bonds. Also have to think of the u. S. As a high yield trade. The u. S. 10year yield is a carry trade compared to japanese bonds today. Capital comes in to buy the u. S. And that keeps a lid on yields. The dollar will as well. In the past, the dollar is another somewhat controversial notion. Ive heard certain people say almost like its dogma that a strong dollar is essential for the u. S. Then there are other people who say we have tried to devalue the dollar in the past to pay back our debt at less in the past. Which is it . Is it good or bad . You know, its a good question. I think dollar moves need to be taken through the lens of longer moves like a longer cycle. I think in the shortterm, you know, one could take a step back and say the Dollar Strengthened because the u. S. Growth has been better. And but in the next 12 to 18 months, the drop in oil benefits europe, china, and japan more. So we could see growth surprise from those regions. And then, you know, we might actually start to think about those currency strengthening. So i guess im not i think Dollar Strength is a sign of better growth and i think it is attracting capital. I think its a positive. But i dont think through the lens of the last hundred years, its a pretty tiny move so far. And youre still even more bullish given whats happened than you were, tom . You know, i dont think its hurt the thesis. I know a couple months ago people were talking about oil decline being a sign of economic distress or deflation, but people are looking at it correctly. Its a source of stimulus for consumers. Its really good for u. S. Companies in general who use petroleum products. You know, whether its airlines or people who ship products. And so, yes, im still bullish to your end. I do think we have to be pretty optimistic about the economy. I think theres a lot of pent up demand. Therefore you should like owning equities. Rebecca, youre about three degrees of separation out from that. I see what youre saying. Youre saying the strong dollar is one of the primary reasons that oil is probably dropping right now and sooner or later that could come back to haunt us. Cant you just think just embrace. Right now im embracing. I am. But whats the Tipping Point . Well, i yeah. Is there a level . Is there a moment in time . Right now im a happy camper. Were overweight u. S. Equities, the dollar in our portfolios. Should we be ecstatic campers . Id be happy if china and europe were growing faster. The Tipping Point comes when u. S. Exporting Companies Start to cry uncle. And their lobbyists hear them saying youve got to help us. And Congress Looking at the 2016 election starts making noise. Were a ways from that yet. I think we have a year where we could have another good run for equity markets and the u. S. Economy. Exports were the most important thing to consider. Because we havent had a strong dollar for a really long time. The dollar was in free for all from 2002 to 2011. We havent had a strong dollar in over a decade. Theres a lot of people that dont when theyre talking about gdp and how were doing here, its all domestic. They say when you did them about europe, they say thats small. The consumer in the u. S. Is driver of gdp. Exports are a small piece of our economy. But its a vocal piece of our economy if we get to that point. Again, im not saying thats tomorrow. Im very comfortable going into next year. And also we think about it in terms of manufacturers being hurt a lot too. And the but you look at what oil lower oil does for the manufacturing drop. Its hard to see that you pick that you know, to pick either factor of lower oil. Manufacturing should be booming right now regardless of a strong dollar. Manufacturing is doing very well in america right now. We can stand a little bit stronger dollar. We can for awhile. We can. Dont misread me. This isnt today. Its going to come. This Time Next Year have me on and well see where we stand. Okay. So tom, what else . What else is on your mind . I dont know if you got to watch yesterday, but we talked about a lot of different issues. Yeah. Well, you know, i think whats been on a lot of investors minds because we been doing quite a lot of traveling, its been a tough year. I do want to say 2014 has been unusual. If you were defensive and you bought utilities or bullish and bought tech, you had pretty much the same year. I think its unusual a bullish or bearish person could have had had the same performance. So i do think next year, were optimistic that if growth is picking up and weve got pentup demand, there should be pretty much more pronounced divergence between sectors. It should be a good year for fund managers, active managers. Were optimistic not only is it going to be a good year for stocks, but active management as well. So utilities and tech. That was the story this year. Well, give us the one we should be in. Are you saving that for your clients . Well, i mean, i think momentum owning whats been working is not a bad strategy. But i think its really financials, technology, health care. I think its a tougher call to say that i want to own dividends and low rates. That would be a bit of a shift. All right. Okay, tom. Tom lee, thank you. Rebecca patterson, thank you. Youre famous. Picture of you every day in the wall street journal. I havent seen it. I read online. Is it in todays paper. No. But i saw it. And richard effen bernstein. Thanks for coming in. When we come back this morning, the countdown continues for nasas new launch. We will bring you that launch when we come back, we hope. Hopefully the boats out of the way. Also the surprising number of popup stores. They are generating big bucks. Then at the bottom of the hour, we have the jobs report. According to popup republic, were here at the bank of america winter village where these stores will do about 15 million in holiday sales this season. And for these owners, this shop is just one more step closer to the brick and mortar store they hope to own. Thats in my future. Probably not for several years and i really have to scout out a great location to do that permanently, but i love retail. I love being with my customers all the time. Its in the stars for me. And becky, part of the reason that people love to shop at these local popup Retail Stores is they like to support Small Business. Thats something we saw over this past weekend with Small Business saturday which is sponsored by american depress. They saw about 14 billion on that one day alone. And an increase of foot traffic by 15 . Back to you. Are those windows behind you . Is that a popup store . I always thought of them being like an outside vendor type of thing, not like real walls and things. But those look pretty permanent. They are so adorable. We actually shot some footage inside and well bring it to you later in the day. These are popup stores behind me. Theres about 120 of them here this year. 50 million during the holiday season. The current delay is due to wind. There were other delays this morning. Due to the second stage of the delta rocket and another with a boat that was too close in the area. Had to get that out of there. Jane wells did tell us that this launch window is more than two hours long, so there is still time for this. Obviously its a complicated situation. Were waiting to see what happens. Jane wells is standing by live. There is no scheduled launch just yet, but we will stay on top of this story. We did some fish jumping we missed it. Apparently someone said there were fish jumping. Im disappointing in us for missing that. Well watch for the fish when she comes back. Theyre giving me more of these lately. I dont want it. I have no idea. Me know nothing. We are just a day away from the november jobs report. A new survey out this morning shows the job cuts are plunging. The nations employers plan to slash 35,000 jobs in november. Right now job cuts are on pace to stop with the lowest year total since 1997. We break down the new report from chicago. John, that sounds fairly promising. Well, it certainly is a sign of a strong labor market. Right now companies are trying to hold onto their people. When we do see layoffs, its because of a emergencier and acquisition. Were seeing some just stay at it and continually improve productivity so theyre constantly scrutinizing their company for ways to use technology and change their mix. John, is there a tale of two cities in the economy when it comes to this. Are there certain areas where job cuts are still coming up, or is this pretty much across the board . Well, were not really seeing any area that has heavy cuts. The two biggest areas right now are consumer products. Health care 5124. Thats the normal course of business. Were seeing more evidence of worker shortages begin to appear. Particularly the skilled trades. Companies cant find machinists welders, the truckers. Thats really the story right now. So theyre holding onto those workers. We were down at the business round table yesterday and while weve heard from a lot of economists they think things are really picking up and were turning a corner, the ceos themselves are less optimistic about things. But theyre not planning on necessarily spending more when it comes to capital expenditures. In fact, theyre planning on spending less than they were than last year at this time. Theyre concerned about sales too. Do you see any of that in the numbers . How do you come down and in which one of these camps . That seems surprising to me. We move towards full employment, were at 5. 8 now. Maybe well get to 5 , 4. 5 where the demand for programmers and skilled workers are going to begin to really cause companies problems. Youd think theyd be wanting to invest more in technology to prepare for that kind of eventuality. Its not that far away we could lose a percentage of the Unemployment Rate in the next year. And then were into the bubble time of, say, 4 to 5 unemployment. Youd think this would be a time to be investing in capital. We had bill george on earlier this morning and spoke to a number of ceos at the business round table yesterday. Finding skilled workers is a problem that crops up high on their agenda. What can they, should they be doing about this . What do you thinks gone wrong . Well, were at the time in the Economic Cycle like i said the seventh inning where there just arent as many workers around. The unemployed pool of workers has shrunk. What you start to see is Companies Going out to other Companies Recruiting and ruing their best workers. That should begin to drive in this next two years higher wages as Companies Pay up for the best people, itll be more of a war for talent i think were moving into. Good news for the american worker. Thanks for joining us today. Thank you. Moving to Energy Markets right now. On squawk box yesterday, exxonmobil ceo talked about the lower impact that Lower Oil Prices will be having on the companys Investment Decisions. For a lot of the Big Investments that we make around the world whether its in Large Liquefied gas projects, these are decadelong Investment Decisions that you take with a view that they have to be able to perform across a very broad range of pricing. So all of the Investment Decisions we take have been tested across a range that accommodates these types of price points. And what you do is ensure you can invest and be successful at the bottom of the cycle. Now with more on the oil impact, matt smith, hes commodity analyst. Good morning to you. When you heard Rex Tillerson say that, and i think he mentioned he was talking about 40 at the lowest end. Was that the number that rex used . What do you think the real number is, matt, just generally speaking for most of these guys especially for shale in the United States at least at a break even point . I think its like playing pin the tail on the donkey really. I think no one really knows. And i dont think were going to find out for at least the next six months. The full cycle costs can be as high as 85, Something Like that. If you listen to opec whereas it could be as low as 32 with some of these lower based ones. The key thing is that no one really knows. We just had saudi arabia hitting the wires the last couple of days talking about the that they see prices stabilizing around 60. So maybe theyre revising down that initial expectation of it being 85 to say look perhaps its closer to 60. Did you say 32 . Yes. Well, it can be as low as that in some of these areas just as the efficiencies are increasing there, theyve already purchased the lands. So these prices can be extremely low. They can also be on the flip side, how nimble can the drillers or fraccers be . You know, we saw this report yesterday and talked about it briefly. New drilling permits down 40 just month to month. To people are pressing the pause button. I think what we might see is just some slowing in that growth. Were up to 9 Million Barrels a day here. If we continue at this rate, well be at sort of 9. 5 Million Barrels by midnext year. Producers can be nimble as Rex Tillerson said, these investments are made over the longer term. So they can hang in there for six months, a year, two, three years if they hedge down. How long can saudi hold out . Oh, good number of years. Theyve got hundreds of billions in terms of Foreign Exchange reserves. And so although the current price isnt likely to meet their budget, they are all able to take a much lower price of oil than your irans and your venezuelas who need it to be 120 to meet that budget. So then the question becomes how much are they trying to wait us out and how much are they trying to wait out sort of venezuela, russia, and others . Thats a great point. With saudi arabia, them leading the charge here on trying to steal market share, theyre not necessarily just targeting the u. S. Theyre not necessarily just targeting high cost production in canada, norway, et cetera. Theyre potentially targeting the members of their cartel as well. This could be the death now for opec. And in terms of price longterm, you look over the next sort of 12 i dont know if we think that 12 or 24 months is longterm. Rex tillerson is thinking in five, ten year increments if not twenty. I think the best cure for low oil prices is low oil prices. If we see them remaining 70 and below next year, that could mean were going to see high prices into 2018. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you. Im confused now. Someone said if the country where the whiskey is made does not have an e in the name, then it doesnt have an e in whiskey. For example, japan, scotland, in india they drink a lot of it. But now jim murrays whisky bible has no e. I dont know if this is only single malt. Is it only scotch . So they make Scotch Whisky in japan. Single malt. I guess so. But i wonder if just by coincidence it works. Like in ireland theres an e. Maybe the way to remember where. I dont know. Just anyway i guess it works United States or america. Either way you go. Youre right about that. Unless you go with usa. Right. But the whisky bible itself has no e. But now im wondering does jim murray look just at Scotch Whisky. Im not a a big drinker. It all smells like gasoline to me. You pound tequila. No. Ill drink wine. But thats about the extent. In the morning . Yes, every morning. Coming up, the ecbs Rate Decision just moments away. Well bring it to you live. Plus boris will join us. And then squawk goes High Performance. Thats what i worry about. Thats the point. Youre using your iphone. And this is what theyre taking advantage of. No, no, no. I might be standing there really . Yeah. Then youre already doing it. I know. But i immediately think, you know, one now i know what to get you for christmas. An otterbox. So itll be safe when it falls in. What is that . It keeps it safe. Youve done that. But have you worried . No, i havent worried about it. I hate to break into this important discussion, but the ecb is just out. Ecb leaving rates unchanged. That was the decision we had been waiting for. Same thing we heard earlier this morning. Again, this was as expected. Ecb leaving those key rates unchanged . Lets get back to talking about currency. The currency markets are something weve been focusing on for quite a while. The strength of the dollar has been this huge news. Also the weakness in the ruble. Boris schlossberg is a cnbc contributor. Boris, lets talk about the strength of the dollar. Earlier this morning, we talked with Rebecca Patterson who said this is great news for now, but at some point it could become a problem. At some point its definitely going to become a problem. But i dont think just yet. For now the u. S. Economy continues to outperform everybody else. You know, the 120 trade we talked about for a couple weeks, dollaryen came within two pips. Were almost at that target. And on euro, clearly today the story is going to be tone, tone, tone. Nobody expects mario draghi to flatout say were going to do qe. But is he going to provide any kind of specific details . Is he going to telegraph to the market theyre actually thinking of buying sovereign debt bonds . I think the euro moves lower. It means hes going to go ahead, he has the consensus on the board to begin qe. If he is sort of very nebulous and doesnt throw out details, i think youll see a shortcoming rally. Everybody and their mother expects the euro to go down that anything less of an almost open, obvious telegraph theres going to be qe is a disappoint to the market. I was going to ask you whats lopsided at this point. Everybody is looking for the dollar to continue to rise. It is definitely getting a little bit of a rise. Heaven the japanese may not want to see the yen depreciate much above 1. 20. At that level it becomes expensive for japanese consumers to buy exports. They want to contain the move significantly. We may not see much beyond the 120 for the time being. The other thing. Fascinating, you always forget how much of a game it is. Y you remember some saying were never going to get to the 120. Yet the dollar is to strong. The reason why is its not our rates have rallied. Its that everybody else has come down so much. Its been Interest Rate repression. And part of that, of course, has been Lower Oil Prices. Its given Central Banks ample room to say theres no inflation. We can keep our rates low for as long as possible. Before we let you go quickly, your thoughts on the ruble. Its been getting crushed. Yeah. You know, i think its really mexican standoff. Its a question of just how much pain the russian economy is going to endure. Its been a perfect storm. I was involved in it when i heard what happened with ukraine. I think the situation there is so structural corrupt at this point that i dont think there is a bargain. I heard a fascinating number. The russian stock market now is worth less than apple. Clearly there is value there. Clearly theres value there, its just question of do you want to, you know, stick your toe into that muddy water. And what are the rules of the game when you get there. Exactly. Thanks very much. Great talking to you. My pleasure. As boris mentioned, mario draghi will begin his press conference at 8 30 this morning. Well bring you highlights. The orion launch has been rescheduled to 7 55. We will bring you that first. But before we do that, the battle for market share and highperformance cars, the ceo of mclaren is here. Were going to ask him about his decision to take on ferrari and lamborghini after the break. On the reservation, tribal students find ways to turn their education into an entire tribes education. But only five percent of indians on the reservation can afford to go to college. Mclaren is a major force for High Performance cars. But now the automaker is looking for higher volume and taking on established players in the 150,000 range like porsche, ferrari, and lamborghini. Good morning. Mclarens only been making cars for about four years. But the make ser expected to report sales this year. Who are the mclaren rich that are buying all these cars . Its a pretty broad demographic. We sell cars now all over the world. We established ourselves in asia very much over the last 12 months. So we have a pretty good spread. U. S. Is still the biggest market. Well sell about 500 cars here in the u. S. This year. But well sell through europe. Well sell into the middle east. Middle east is very strong with this kind of car. And asias growing. And as i said, we moved into china in september last year. Now, we have a car outside. Its 1. 2 million. Sorry, guys, its already sold out. Sold out six months after the launch. But youre about to launch the p13. I think youre going to give us news on exactly when that might launch. And the price point. When is that going to launch . That car will go to customers in october next year. Were going to show it to the world in april. And as i told you before we came on set, were actually going to launch it in the new york autoshow. So the thinking behind it is this is a car, it is slightly high volume. Volume is relative. It will always be an exclusive car company. Itll probably be about 2,000 cars a year worldwide. Right now the entry level for mclaren is well over 300,000, right . The actual price is just short of 300. But typically with customizing around 300,000. This could come in at 180 in the u. S. As a starting point. That goes right up against porsche, ferrari. Lambo is a little bit higher. These guys are kings of that business. How do you come in as a newcomer . Were a very competitive company. So with a Company Built on technology, weve dominated almost every aspect through the last 50 years. But youre right. Some great history with things like the f1 and the iconic road car. But came in with a 12c. Brought a car in the 300,000 segment. That cars done very well. Launched the p1 at the high end. Sort of 1. 2 million. And then car has sold out worldwide. Its been a tremendous demonstration of our technical competitiveness. That car does 0 to 60 in 2. 8, 2. 7. One guy we just saw the news. A guy crashed his just the day after getting it. Are these cars getting too fast to drive today . Too advanced . I dont think you can get too advanced. The cars are giving them Better Safety systems. That gentleman down in texas, the guy picked his car up and the next day, nothing else involved, just hit a wet piece of road. And the guy walked away. So cars are incredibly safe. The technology is superb. But you have to think how youre going to enjoy them. I drove into new york last night and there was traffic. Thats not the ideal environment. Two weeks ago i was in california with 15 of our customers of the p1. On the monday we went down and those people they absolutely loved it. Had the time of their lives. We should thank the owner of his car because he was supposed to get his 1. 2 million car. He didnt get it so we could get that. The only cars ive seen like that are match boxcars. These cars dont exist in real life. It is amazing. Yes. It is. You need to be going, like, straight if youre going to do the acceleration like that. Thats the only thing i would say. With that kind of acceleration, if youre turning at all youre going to spin out. And that will cause a wreck. Youve got to be responsible when using these cars. Even theres a button that you dont usually take off that prevents you from getting too and ive never taken it off on any of these. Because you will spin out at some point. Because the acceleration is just if youre not going in a straight line, 2. 8 seconds and we would clearly recommend you keep it on. Take it on the racetrack. A lot of our cars are enthusiastic. They can manage and control. Drive responsibly. Thats the message. Thank you, guys. Thank you. We do have an update on the launch of nasas orion spacecraft. It has been delayed again. We will keep you updated. Also to come this morning, more Economic Data to move the markets. Jobless claims hit at 8 30 eastern. Squawk box will be right back. . No. Its called grid iq. Marketing tips to help you get a huge social media following. And robots meet racing. Well talk our skills and talk hightech racing with ceo of anki. As the final hour of squawk box begins right now. Welcome back to squawk box here on cnbc, first in business worldwide. Im joe kernen along with Andrew Ross Sorkin and becky quick. Check out this live shot of this spaceship orion. Its still on the launch pad. Its been delayed several times this morning. If and when it does happen, were going to bring it to you. The mission will clear the way for the next generation of space explorati exploration. Jane wells is with us again and joins us with an update. Were going to watch for fish this time. Im told theyve been jumping behind me, but what has not been jumping is that rocket off the launch pad behind me. We are in the middle of another hold again due to winds. You can see it has been a little breezy out here. If the winds gust beyond 21 knots at the ground level, they put a hold on it. They have automatic sensors for that. We had earlier holds this morning because there was a boat here that didnt need to be. While they were conditioning the fuel in the second stage. Right now everything has been set to go, its just they have to wait to see how the weather happens. There is about an hour and 40 minutes left in the window today. There is plenty of time. They are optimistic. One of the issues is every time they put a hold, they have to put the orion back on external power. Because its batteries, they dont want to stress its batteries and use them too much just sitting on the launch pad during these holds. Even when the weather is good, then they have to go through a recycling period to get everything ready and up and going again. Sometimes in that period, then the wind kicks up again. Well have to see what happens. Back to you. When was the last launch there, jane . Do you know . Did you say that earlier . Because we used to look forward to those all the time because its very few things sort of inspire the awe and the feeling the space shuttles used to take off. Its so cool. Do you remember . Its been years. It has been years. They do payload launches from here all the time, unmanned missions. But this is really but this is a delta 4 heavy rocket. This is the biggest candle we have right now. Now, when this second test flight is done for orion in 2017 or 18, it will be flying atop a bigger rocket. Presuming nasa and the federal government continues to fund these projects all the way through to getting us eventually to mars. You just sounded like an astronaut. You sounded like tom hanks or bill paxton or something from that movie. You know the lingo. Lets light this candle. Lets do it. I have to say, yeah. You know, its i told you before i applied to the journalist space program. This is the first time ive got to personally witness a launch, which i hope i will get to do today. We all refer to you in the past as a space cadet. But this wasnt the actual meaning that we were someone said that in my ear. The producer said that. It still works. I thought it was pretty good. Yeah. Hilarious. Hey, jane, you did mention there was a window. Two and a half hour window . If it doesnt happen in that time period, it doesnt happen today . Correct. They have until 9 44 a. M. Eastern today. Part of that is because they want to be daylight here and also want plenty of sunlight when it lands later in the pacific off baja. Were crossing your fingers for you. We hope you get to see it. Or some fish. Oh, thanks. They were jumping awhile ago. Trying to Pay Attention this time. Theyre on hold too. All right. Watched pot. Never boils. Well tell you whats happening at this hour besides all of that. The ecb and bank of england leaving their key Interest Rates unchanged this morning. In about half an hour mario draghi will hold a press conference. Well bring you that. Also important to watch at 8 30 eastern. First time filings see falling to 290 thourk,000. And drivers in Oklahoma City down below 2 a gallon. Other parts of the country may soon see the same thing. Perhaps as early as this weekend. We are less than 90 minutes away from the opening bell on wall street. The futures this morning have been indicated slightly higher. Although id call this unchanged. Same thing happened yesterday then we saw the dow setting a new record by the end of the day. Early trading in the european markets also looks like weve had some green arrows. Not massive advances. In fact ftse is slightly lower. But the dax is up lower than a percent. A few stocks on the move this morning. Sears posting a larger Third Quarter loss. So loss is widened, but below what analysts were forecasting. So thats good. This is the eighth Straight Year of sales declines for sears in its fourth Straight Year of losses. It was a mixed quarter for express. Earnings beat but sales short. Apparel retailer also cut its fullyear guidance based on weaker instore performance. But it says ecommerce business is improving. And aeropostale plans to close 70 stores. And that Company Offering a weak forecast for the current holiday quarter. Dollar general missed the mark on earnings, revenue, and samestore sales. All below. The retailer did see a pickup towards the end of the quarter, though, and dg says it remains committed to buying rival family dollar. And l brands posting a better than expected 8 jump in november. Though not much happening with that stock premarket. Corporate leaders of the business round table talking about some of the most pressing issues from health care reform, drop in oil prices and r regulatory issues. Heres just a taste of some of those issues we touched on yesterday in our exclusive coverage of the business round table from washington, d. C. Inventories up at some point its got to show nup the price. You think about canada, the u. S. , mexico. Think what we can do in terms of supplying the world its energy. For us were actually excited about the opportunity to try to figure how to serve the customer in all of those ways. In the normal m a cycle, you find similar kinds of businesses that make sense where they can take cost out and get positive synergy. That part of the cycle is whats going on. I find it shocking the narrative is so negative. This is an incredible tax cut for americans and everywhere around the world. After the summit, president obama spoke. Heres a clip of his comments on Corporate Tax reform. We should be able to smooth the system out, streamline it in a way that allows us to lower rates, close loopholes, and make for a much more efficient system where folks arent wasting a lot of time trying to hire accountants and lawyers to get out of paying taxes but have some certainty. And were able to raise just as much money on a simpler system. Thats something i think we should be doing. Joining us right now is steven rattner. Hes the former u. S. Treasury auto advisory. Steve, its great to see you this morning. Nice to see you, becky. When we were there in washington talking to people on both sides of the aisle, leaders from business, people from all around the place, it sounded like everyone was talking the same talk in terms of finding some Common Ground on a way to get tax reform. But the devil is in the details. You think we can actually make a package that comes together next year . You took the words right out of my mouth. The devil is in the details. And thats where it has historically broken down. The president outline what had he would like to do. The republicans, i think, would agree with every word he said, but then they are worried about the socalled pass throughs, the businesses that are taxed as individuals. Then you end up with a bigger set of issues on your hands. So i think its still tough. I think it also gets wrapped up in the whole gridlock that exists in washington that were all so familiar with. And i have to say i dont like to be cynical, but i dont see exactly what causes the polarization and the impasse that weve had the last couple of years to break apart. I guess the key in what the president was talking about was this idea of revenue neutral saying we can raise just as much money, just find a fairer way of doing it. That seems like a common sense sort of strategy. I dont know how you get everybody in the room. That means somebody is going to be paying more taxes. Thats the point. Everybody says lets get rid of the loopholes, lets get rid of the deductions, the egregious practices and then as soon as you get rate specific, some companies, some sectors say what about this. This is important to me and i need that. And so again, i dont like to be negative. Its not my nature. But these are tough issues and i wish i could be more optimistic. There are some things to be pretty optimistic about when you look at oil prices coming down. That was a message from larry fink and a lot of other people that this is really positive right now. You heard the same thing from doug that the risk premium from Higher Oil Prices and who were paying to get our oil, that is off the table right now. That could be an incredibly positive scenario. No question about it. But lets be specific about whats good about it. Since we dont import as much oil as we used to, the benefit to us from a trade standpoint, from a transfer standpoint is not as great as it used to be. The really great impact from this Falling Oil Prices is a transfer of wealth from producers of oil in the u. S. As well as in the rest of the world to American Consumers. And as we know incomes have not been going up. And so that in effect tax cut for American Consumers is the most exciting part of this from where im sitting, anyway. Steve, i want to go back to what youre saying about the president for just a moment. I saw you quoted in a piece that ben white has written recently about Antonio Weiss and the democratic party. And sort of the split of whats going on. You know where i stand on that whole issue. But more broadly, what do you see actually happening inside the party and how do you think that will end up impacting the discussion over the next two years . Theres no question that there is a difference of view within the democratic party. Not only the difference to the Republican Party between different parts of the party who see the same problems, want to solve those problems, but have different ways of going about it. So there is the progressive end of the party that has a strong view about wall street and about business and about how People Like Us should be involved in government or not involved in government. And so thats really whats going on here. Whos winning . Whos winning . I think at the moment its too soon to tell. I think Elizabeth Warren is a very forceful, very passionate, and important and valuable voice for her point of view. I do think at the moment that the tradition what ill call traditional but we think of ourselves as progressives as well, democratic view of how to balance fairness here is still the dominant part of the party. Steve, you guys can have your intraparty squabble for awhile, you and andrew. But i want to get so something that you said that made me feel proud. I guess youre not going to the White House Christmas party this year after saying that gruber was the goto guy. What prompted you to admit to say that . You knew that was not going to go over well. They just said they never heard of the guy, and you said he was the goto guy on obamacare. And you were talking about a tax from the left. What about schumer . Where did that come from where it was written and hes not even backing away from what he said, steve. Those are the thats the party part id like to address. Which of those two questions do you want me to answer . Start with what the heck you were thinking when you admitted that . It wasnt a question of admitting it. What i said was that if you pick up any newspaper or go back and look at any video clips from your show or any other show from that period, Jonathan Gruber was all over the Health Care Situation as an adviser to the administration and as an expert and as the guy who designed the Massachusetts Health plan. Sebelius again yesterday said gruber, gruber, he might have been some guy that, you know, heard something. I mean, really. Look. What i would have said about that if i were in charge of communications is i would have said, yes, he was an adviser to us. Hes a smart guy. What he said in those video clips that have now come out are stupid. Hes the stupid one for having said that stuff and we the white house disassociate ourselves from it. So some stupid guy designed obamacare. That doesnt give me a lot of confidence either. No. We can debate obamacare, but how about schumer . What chuck said in that speech was something he said before. He said it as long ago as 2010. If you read the speech in its entirety, what hes really saying and this gets back to your earlier questions about your democratic party, if we want to win, we have to address the middle class, the people who are being left behind. Weve been saying that since day one. You come in after one of the worst recessions ever and the first thing you decide to focus on is obamacare and that was a mistake. It fractured the country. And were still in a poisonous atmosphere because of the way it was done. And schumer finally admitted it. All right, joe. But i believe when we have this conversation in five or ten years, well look back on the Affordable Care act as one of the most important pieces of legislation passed in this decade. I keep hearing that. Maybe ten years will do it. Thank you, steve rattner. Good to see you. The former chief at apple, guy kowasaki talks to us about the subject of social media. Good morning to you. Good morning to you. So ive been a twitter follower and longer follower you with apple and everything else. Help us with social media. Nobody really knows what were supposed to be doing out there. Sure. But the biggest question i have about being promotional or selfpromotional on social media is how far can you go, how often can you do it, and do you have to do it yourself . You have a whole apparatus out there. It seems like it takes a lot of time to do it. I think you should apply something that i call the npr model which is npr is constantly putting out great content. So that earns them the right to earn these fund raising telethons every once in awhile. If you just looked at it mathematically, you can promote yourself. One out of every twenty posts, tweets, updates. 5 . The rest of the time you should be sharing stuff thats informati informative, entertaining, or analytical. But its always about being valuable so that you earn the right to promote. When you think of the various platforms that youre on, which do you think is the most effective . That would depend for the person. For example, if youre in fashion or food, it would probably be pinterest. If youre looking nor entrepreneurship probably linkedin. Daytoday activities, facebook. If youre looking for the most high quality interaction, it would probably be google plus. And twitter is for just blasting out. Thats just a mechanism where youre putting stuff out. Millions of people are putting stuff out. Its about, you know, what your perceptions are, whats happening in realtime. So the regular joe on the street who has a job, how often should you be posting . Id say a couple, two, three times a day. You know, theres so much action in social media. The concept that you post something and people will find it is really delusional. You have to keep posting just as youre in the broadcast business, tough keep putting stuff out there. You should never assume everyone whos interested in what youre doing is up at that time, is on the computer at that time. If you look at all the accounts i have, i probably post 50 or 60 times a day. Right. But this is your fulltime job to some extent. Not the social media component, but guy as a franchise. I want to know more about the other guy, the sort of regular guy and what hes supposed to do. Well, the regular guy should ask himself or herself a question like to what end, what is the purpose of social media. And i think for most people it is a more casual use, a more social use. Emphasis on social. Those people, you know, i still say once or twice a day. But if you want to use it as a business, if you want it to extend your brand and i dont just mean as a personal brand but your corporate brand, i think its more like 10 to 20 times a day. And going back to the apparatus issue in terms of doing it yourself versus having a staff, it becomes a fulltime job. I wouldnt say fulltime job. Thats a little strong. Im at one very, very far extreme. But there are tools today like buffer, Sprout Social that allow you to cash your things in advance, schedule them in advance so you dont have to constantly be on the firing line. Its very valuable, very powerful, but it comes with some responsibility to work hard. Right. Guy, the book the art of social media, its a good one. I appreciate it. Thank you so much. Thank you. Welcome back to squawk box. Breaking news. Initial jobless claims dropped from a slightly revised 314,000 minus 17,000 you get to 297,000. So we go from the highest levels since september over 300,000 back down. Gyrations, holidays, seasonality, youre heard it all before. Continuing claims go from 2. 32 to 2. 36. Not huge. Were all waiting for draghi. The futures are now up ten. So the press conference so far worth a threetick move up in the euros. My own personal feeling is that the Euro Currency is probably going to do better. I just think that mario draghi is going to have a hard time delivering on some of these issues especially in the here and now. But thats all right. At least ten years now under 2 pretty much their entire curve has less yields than us. Back to you. Hey, rick. We had Boris Schlossberg on earlier and he agreed with you. He said the trade was so heavy with everybody convinced the dollars going to be stronger for a long time that mario draghi has a high bar to jump over in order to see any movement other than what you just mentioned. The idea the euro is stronger. You know, you have all the currencies at technical areas and people can make fun of technicals, but its a record of Human Behavior and Human Behavior is rather repetitive and predictable. O 90 on the dollar index, going to give us resistance. Were getting close. And what you just mentioned on the euro. So be careful of conventional wisdom and old trades. But do not worry about dropping crude. Its a good thing. Unless youre somebody whos long the ruble, i would suppose at that point, right . You know, its working better than sanctions. As a matter of fact, the worlds gotten so topsyturvy, i was in a discussion where many were worried if putin doesnt make his money based on energy that hes going to do even crazier things. Now, i understand that that might be a permutation in this instance. But at the end of the day, whether its politics or energy or free markets, these things have to work out. And really dropping Energy Prices are a great thing. Not only for the u. S. But japan. I guess they need to turn that the dropping prices and inflation is enemy number one. In this instance, its probably the best friend they have. Thank you. Thank you. Steve leisman is here. He has more on those jobless claims numbers. Steve, back below 300,000. And its consistent with what weve seen. If you put together the two ism numbers we had this week. The Services Number yesterday the manufacturing on monday, our friend over at hfe says they are consistent im sorry. Used to be there. Jim osullivan. Says theyre consistent with 5 real growth. More evidence that the economy is shifting into a higher gear. You dont need claims to go much lower from here to be consistent with that. These are numbers that you see numbers that are out there for tomorrow of 250 and maybe the expectations are raised to a point right now where there are some that are really going to be easy for the numbers to disappoint. Help me out with this. Yesterday we talked to the ceos of the business round table. These are the guys who can decide how many people to hire, how much Capital Spending to put into the economy. They see next year being closer to 2. 4 . What is the disconnect . I didnt say this because i dont know that my track record or the track record of economists is better, but the track record of the ceos is not all that great. They get caught by surprise either way. On the upside or the downside. Just as surely as investors do. Just in terms of change. Thats one thing. Because they were right last year. They were right last year. And i remember the walmart ceo i was trying to read between the lines. He said its still a 2 , 3 economy. He didnt seem all look. Heres what were looking for. Four of the past five quarters have been above 3 . Have been near 4 , in fact. What you need is an economy above 2. 5 above potential to make strides on putting the longterm unemployed back to work. Thats what were looking for. So anything above that, 2. 4 , 2. 6 , its a big deal. Weve gotten to a place where we have enough growth to reduce the Unemployment Rate. And for this economy to start filtering down. You know, over the years you have a drinking problem with hard liquor. Do you know did you know about that if the country itself doesnt have an e in the name, then whisky does not have an e . I didnt know that. I didnt either. So like canada can i just go back . How about Irish Whiskey . Can i go back and discuss that drinking problem. It was one party. He accuses me of drinking wine every morning. I was still hired. Im still here. I know. All right. Just in general probably not a good, you know, two is right . Lets get more reaction to the data as the you zrnt a lamp shade on your head. You monitor mario. Ill monitor mario and ill drink my coffee. Coffee and kahlua. And jim iuorio joins us. Were doing 18,000 today . I think we probably will move higher today. The question you hit upon is how many different ways can draghi say i got your back, im all in. Can he convince the market today that hes there . I think he probably can. Is there a possibility that theres a market position euro snapback . Thats possible based everybody in the world is short the euro. Rick hit it on the head when he said italian 10year under 2 . If people are lining up to lend italy 10year money, then our stock market looks great. I know that volumes have been light on the up move here. I know that, yes, the way were compressing yields, the way the market is moving with the liquidity, it looks something ominous in the future. As long as italy is at 2 , yield looks fine. Back to the whiskey thing. I sell whiskey and i had no idea about the country e thing. But at the bar tonight, ill make sure i look like an expert. You sell bourbon or scotch if. Both. I have a bar and a restaurant in the northwest. We sell a lot of whiskey. I hate whiskey, but dont tell them that. Im with becky. Ill have a margarita. I love marg raritmargarita. But whiskey is awful. I dont need to acquire a taste to that. Scotch is so old news. All the cool guys drink bourbon. And they pretend theyve been drinking it their whole life. But scotch was a big deal five years ago. Nobody will admit to that. I remember that but i never could do it. The sixth or seventh one i could finally but then youre in a bad place already. Take a look at the euro. Its dropped below 123 just a few seconds ago. Draghi is saying that inflation is weaker than expected. Gdp, weaker than expected. He sees that current measures will move the Balance Sheet back to the levels of early 2012. Nothing yet on further qe. So he is doing what we what our market editor calls quantitative speaking right anyway. Whether or not he gets into quantitative easing, well talk about it all morning. But the euro moving off the bat. Coming up neck, they got their break with apple last year. And now anki drive is taking the robot racing world by storm. These little cars have minds of their own literally. Combined with human interaction, it becomes a battle. Well talk to the cofounder of that company and have a friendly competition. I dont know how friendly its going to be. Well see in just a moment. Thats mario draghi who is still speaking about the ecbs decision to keep rates the same. He said the staff there have stepped up technical preparations for further measures. Thats a sign that maybe theyre doing something for additional easing. Also pointing out he still has you n unanimous. The robotic startup was virtually unknown. Back now, anki is one of the hottest tech toys on the market. Here with us is the cofounder and chief product officer at anki. Welcome. You have this whole setup for us. Were actually going to try to play some of this. Joes over here getting ready. Tell us what this is and how it works. Yeah. Anki drive is a racing game where you can control the cars with your smartphone.
