Has been putting out hits since 1988. Only now does she feel she is in control of her music. This is my brandnew, me in charge of him i am putting out album i am putting out. I begin with Health Threats to the united states, particularly the vulnerability to viruses. President obama addressed the situation today. I consider this a Top National Security priority. This is not just a matter of charity. Ebola is not the only threat to the u. S. Health system. Enterovirus d68 has hospitalized hundreds of children in almost every state. It has also been linked to at least four deaths. Here to tell us more is Shannon Pettypiece and joining us from dallas is dr. Greenberg, and meteorologist a neurologist. Dr. Greenberg is working with researchers to find a connection between d68 and the paralysis connected with the virus. Doctor, lets begin with you. Describe the value in trying to find a connection between d68 and the paralysis some young patients have experienced. It is important to determine whether there is a connection between this virus and the paralysis we are seeing in children because if this fires is causing it the u. S. And world would have to look at developing treatments and perhaps vaccinations similar to what happened in the years of polio, we would want to ensure this did not become more widespread or do more damage to more of our children. Shannon, describe what is going on in the country and the kind of risks parents with Young Children may face. This virus is very widespread at this point. In most cases, it is causing a common cold. But for hundreds, possibly thousands of kids, they are being hospitalized with severe respiratory issues. Inability to breathe, lips turning blue, parents are having to rush their children to the e. R. They are being put in the intensive care unit. It is very scary. There is now a possibility, as weve seen the infections rise, we are seeing infections in these poliolike paralysis cases which dr. Greenberg has been looking into. Research has found a connection between this fires and paralysis. Now there is not only a fear of the respiratory distress the virus can cause but also that it will leave longlasting paralysis affects where kids cannot use an arm or are unable to breathe or speak. You have a personal connection to this. Tell us what happened. Last week, i found myself at the emergency room with my young son who is nine months old who was wheezing. I woke up that morning and he was breathing very heavy, unable to catch his breath. I took him to the pediatrician. We were there for hours and could not get it under control. Went to the emergency room. Into having to be hospitalized. He did test positive for an enterovirus. We are not sure it was this strain. I met so many parents going through the same thing at the emergency room, in the hospital, of their children struggling to breathe because of a respiratory virus. Dr. Greenberg, what kind of guidance would you give to parents of children who have these kinds of symptoms . What questions should they be asking of their Health Supervisors . The first thing to recognize is enterovirus is are incredibly common. There are probably 2 million children a year to get upper respiratory infections. The common cold from enteroviruses and they do just fine. This year, we have seen a spike in children getting quite ill. In general, there is no specific treatment for the virus. It is supportive care. If your child is having problems breathing, please get them to the physician or the emergency room for evaluation. The most important thing is to stop the spread of the virus. As the Public Health departments and cdc have been urging, frequent handwashing, using antibacterial soaps and lotions in schools and at home is the key to preventing the infection to begin with. If your child does become ill, i can reassure you think fully thankfully the neurological competitions complications are exceedingly rare. Even in the sickest children, this scary competition is seen in only a handful so far. Thank you, dr. Benjamin greenberg. He joins us from university of texas southwestern medical center. My thanks also to Shannon Pettypiece a bloomberg news. Coming up, Melissa Etheridge is a songwriter, singer, cancer survivor, and she is going solo with her music. Explain for people who may not be familiar with the record industry, the music business, what was it like in 1993 . Compare it to what is going on now. The record business industry, the recording industry, was built on the model of they would find an artist from the 1950s to the 1980s. What happened in the 1980s as they would find an artist, sign them. You would be bound to them. Your voice belonged to the record company. You could not sing on anyone elses song without their permission. You could not do anything with your voice. They owned your voice. It started to fall in on itself with digital. If you want the song come to my you would call Island Records and pay them because they own that recording. I dont own it. I dont really make any money on that recording. Tell us about the latest musical endeavor because that also brings together a lot of different people. The new model is i dont have this Million Dollar budget upfront. I used to write the songs. I would go in with a producer. I would pay him some money. I would pay the bandit some money. Two weeks in the studio and you would make a record. Now because i dont have the upfront money, i go to the producer who has a smaller studio because of technology. It can all be done much more economically. You can make a record in your bedroom now basically. Describe as the music, how that is infused with your own personal life over the last decade or so. You had to face some Significant Health issues with cancer. How does that come out in the music . I tell you, i learned a long time ago that the songs that come from my experience, that come from myself, what i know, those are the songs that touch people. The more personal i would get, the more universal it would be. You have not only been open about your cancer. You have also been a very open about your own personal life and getting married. Congratulations. You got married this year. Speak about that and one of the trends you hope is no longer a trend but just an everyday situation in the united states, samesex marriage. Samesex marriage is something 20 years ago was a dream. It was a strange dream. We were not ever going to get married. We were alternative. The familiesgot, we started creating, the children we had, we realized as a community we do need the same rights, the same protections that our amazing country affords us. There is the possibility of something on broadway . Yes. That is a dream of mine. A couple of years ago, i did a broadway. I love broadway. It is a special place. Wife whoting with my is an amazing writer. You can say her name. Lena wallum. The creator of nurse jackie, very Popular Television program. She has done a lot. Ar and i are creating broadway musical. It is in the back seat to her three shows she is working on and my album, so it has been sitting there and it might be a couple more years before it comes about. But it is in the pipeline and i look forward to it. One thing in the piper line pipeline literally and figuratively, you fill in the blanks for everybody. This came about because of the chemotherapy you were experiencing when you were fighting cancer. I had a choice at a time. I was in california, a medical marijuana state. I had a choice of the pharmaceuticals i could have taken for pain and depression and all these things which had side effects and more pills, or i had the choice of using the herb cannabis for pain relief, my appetite, for everything. It kept me very healthy during chemotherapy. I would highly recommend anyone undergoing this to look into the metals medical side of this. I believe this is a huge opportunity, huge business and market. You are going to see my name with a lot of these things. I have a wine coming out. It is a cannabis infused wine which tastes amazing.
