Seriously injured or how much were walking injured. It is a confusing picture, i understand. From our live pictures, we are on the edge of a live crowd at the junction, we can see them looking in a particular direction. What is it they are gathering around 7 theres the police cordon, they cant go any further, they just want to know what is happening at the other side. There are some people who just cant go home, who literally. Its been cordoned off and they arent being allowed home while the scene is being examined and forensically looked at. Obviously we dont know at this moment if it is a terrorist attack, we dont know, but eyewitnesses around here strongly feel the driver deliberately targeted those people because he thought they were muslims. We havent had this confirmed, we dont know, but that is what im being told by eyewitnesses. That was Jane Frances Kelly reporting, these are live pictures just on 5 30am london time, police are spending to a Major Incident in north london. One man has been arrested after a van was involved in some kind of collision with a group of worshippers as they came out of a mosque. In between the Finsbury Park mosque and the Muslim Welfare house in north london. One person died at the scene, at least eight more have been taken to hospital with injuries and the Prime Minister, theresa may, is saying this is being treated as a potential terrorist attack. The mosque is located next to Finsbury Park station. As you can see, the whole area is cordoned off at the moment for obvious reasons, its all so close to arsenals emirates stadium, this is the london borough of islington, Jeremy Corbyns constituency, the leader of the Opposition Party for those viewers watching us around the world. If we can show you the Muslim Welfare house website, you can get a sense of what the organisation is about, it is close to the mosque and you could describe it as a Community Centre for the Muslim Community based there. In islington north, it isa based there. In islington north, it is a really diverse, Multicultural Community and on their homepage it talks about the islington great get together, an event taking place between the 16th and 18th ofjune to mark the one Year Anniversary of the murder ofjo cox, the member of parliament, the politician who was tragically murdered and stabbed a year ago by a far right extremist. This organisation which does a lot of events is all about serving the Muslim Community in the area. Basically it says it is all about education, best practice social and educational training centres, all about increasing the Cultural Diversity in the area. So thats their homepage. Weve got a statement from the Muslim Welfare house website. The Muslim Council for britain have been speaking all through the night. Today they are condemning what is widely being described as a Terror Attack that has taken part at taken place at Finsbury Park in london. This is the full statement they have issued online muslim communities have been calling for increased action to tackle the growth in hate crime for many years and Tra Nsformative Action Growth in hate crime for many years and transformative action must now be taken to tackle not only this incident but the hugely worrying growth in islamaphobia. That was a statement from the Muslim Council for that was a statement from the Muslim Councilfor britain. Youre with bbc news as we interrupt oui youre with bbc news as we interrupt our normal programming this morning to keep you across developments in north london. Letsjoin our News Reporter graham satchell, who is at Finsbury Park. Graham, bring us up to date. Good morning. Its very interesting how this whole situation has developed overnight. Initially police were describing it as a Major Incident and it was very uncertain at that stage exactly what this was. Some people saying it mayjust have been an accident, eyewitnesses on the ground saying a white van deliberately drove into a group of muslim worshippers. Let me tell you where we are, we are on Seven Sisters rd, this is the police cordon, you can see a line of police bands here. The incident happened behind these police vans we think near the Traffic Lights vans. Their our world media here and you might be able to see the arsenal Football Shop, not the stadium, the Football Shop, not the stadium, the Football Shop, not the stadium, the Football Shop as we are near the Arsenal Football Club there are world media. The situation developed rapidly overnight with police saying one man was confirmed dead at the scene. Eight people injured and taken to three separate hospitals. Inaudible. Taken to three separate hospitals. Inaudible. The taken to three separate hospitals. Inaudible. The police in london are carrying out this investigation. British Prime Minister theresa may also saying they are now considering this to be a suspected terrorist attack. It does come after a series of incidents where vehicles have been driven into members of the public in other parts of central london. This is the third time this has happened in as many months. But this of course is significantly different because we believe this is a white man driving a van who targeted muslim people who had been praying into separate mosques very close to here, Finsbury Park mosque and the Muslim Welfare house. We are of course in the month of ramadan. This happened at midnight local time. People had just come out after prayers had been said in the mosques to mark the end of their fasting. So there was a group of people on the pavement and it does look as though they were deliberately targeted by this man. Individual eyewitnesses that weve spoken to here on the ground say that there may have been up ground say that there may have been up to three people in this land, thatis up to three people in this land, that is not confirmed. But what we do know is that members of the public detained one man who was then arrested when the police arrived, and he was. We understand he has now been taken to hospital but will be questioned. Graham, through the night weve been looking at pictures of the crowd there near to thatjunction where youre standing. I just wonder there near to thatjunction where youre standing. Ijust wonder how many people are there now in terms of that crowd . Well, we can swing the camera around a little bit for you. Its thinned out quite considerably but if we look round and fight the sun a little bit, sunrise in london, there area little bit, sunrise in london, there are a group of people here. Its difficult to tell how many were here when the incident happened, how many have just come down from the local area to have a look. But yes, you can look this way and see that this is mainly members of the international media. There are groups of people here from the Muslim Community, as you were saying earlier, this is a very diverse part of london with a very strong Muslim Community. And a very strong sense here from the people on the ground that they were deliberately targeted in this attack, that this was a hate crime and an act of terror, an act of islamaphobia. Also, graham, in terms of the police cordon, what area is cordoned off right now . Does it include Finsbury Park station . Will that be open as normal this morning or not . No, Finsbury Park station is just over here outside the cordon, im not sure if our cameraman can see that, you can see the Arsenal Football Club, Finsbury Park station is directly next to it. The area thats been cordoned off is part of Seven Sisters rd, the road were standing on at the moment, and its a couple of 100 metres the area of this road that has been cordoned off. Were not being given very much detail about the Travel Implications for this but its a small part of this bit of london that has been cordoned off and there will be a detailed search going on at the moment as the police and Counterterrorism Branch of the police look for evidence. For now, graham, thank you very much indeed. Graham satchell, our News Reporter at the scene where whats being described as a Major Incident took place overnight. Graham just describing what happened. We will be talking to somebody very shortly who we are told detained the man who has been handed over to police. One man was detained by the public and then handed over to police, which is quite extraordinary really given the circumstances of this event. Were told that this man is currently in the hands of police but in hospital, hell be questioned of course. As graham said, there was the possibility of three people in the van. Thats not been confirmed. But certainly one man has been detained and is in the hands of the police at the moment. That is a really interesting detail that started to emerge i guess around 1am, 2am london time, which was that this man was held by the crowd outside the mosques there and then pushed forward to the police, taken to the police, in essence saying you need to arrest this man. Really interesting detail that he was held by the public before being taken away by the police. A 48 year old man i believe who drove the van. Lets have a look at a statement that came from Prime Minister theresa may weve also heard from the opposition leader, jeremy corbyn, he is the local mp leader, jeremy corbyn, he is the localmp in leader, jeremy corbyn, he is the local mp in this part of north london and hes tweeted a short time ago saying im totally shocked by the incident at Finsbury Park tonight. I think it was one of those moments around 2am, 3am when we heard Downing Street informed of the Prime Minister. You started to get a sense this was turning into a Major Incident. We can talk to add door rahman, who is on the line now, good morning, abdul, you just come out of hospital abdul abdul, you just come out of hospital abdul razzak man. You were one of the members of the public who detained this man in the van, what happened . Abdul rackemann. It was probably around 12am, probably around 12 15a. M. , probably around 12am, probably around 12 15 a. M. , 12 30am when this incident happened. There was this old man who passed out on that corner. We were trying to help him to give him cpr. Me and my friends came out outside the mosque, which is near the mosque, a few yards away, and we just heard a van turning into us, and he ran towards people but i managed to get away but a lot of people got injured. You managed to get away but were told that you actually detained one of the men who was in the van. Talked us the men who was in the van. Talked us through that. When the guy came out from his van, he wanted to escape, runaway. He was saying i wa nt to escape, runaway. He was saying i want to kill muslims, i want to kill muslims. Because there was no place to run away he came back to where he drove. I hit him on his stomach, he fell down on the floor. Me and there was other guys, we held him to the ground until he was. Couldnt move. We held him until the police came. The police took around 20 minutes to half an hour. They took a very long time, and the ambulance as well. Abdul, thats absolutely extraordinary. Describe this man for us. Extraordinary. Describe this man for us. What did he looked like an repeat again, abdul, what he was shouting when you detained him . He was saying. When we got him on the ground, i asked him, was saying. When we got him on the ground, iasked him, why did was saying. When we got him on the ground, i asked him, why did you do that . I was very emotional and very upset. Why did you do that . You killed so many people. At that time ididnt killed so many people. At that time i didnt know how many people got injured or died but i said, why did you do that, why did you do that . He said kill me, kill me. I said why did you do that, youre killing so many people for no reason i think this man, you know, he was. He had an englishman face. He looked like a builder, a very big man. He was in his 50s i think. Very strong. We couldnt hold him that much as he was very strong. Luckily there
