Lets bring you the latest facts on coronavirus. 13 people in the uk have tested positive. By way of comparison, in england alone 27 people die from flu related illnesses each day and five people die on the roads each day across the uk. At least 11 of the 32,000 primary and secondary schools in the uk are now confirmed to have closed. They are in liverpool, cheshire, middlesborough, huddersfield, and in Northern Ireland in londonderry, county down and ballymena and there are two schools shut in cornwall. Some are closed because of links to the virus, while others have sent pupils home over fears they may have been exposed to coronavirus during ski trips to northern italy. And some british holiday makers are still locked in their a star hotel in tenerife, because someone there tested positive for the virus. Movement is still restricted across northern italy. And several other European Countries have announced their first cases. Austria, croatia and switzerland said the cases involved people who had been to italy, as did algeria in africa. According to the nhs website, the symptons of coronavirus are a cough, High Temperature and or shortness of breath but if you have those, it doesnt necessarily mean you have the virus you could just have a cold or the flu. Theres currently no specific treatment for coronavirus antibiotics dont work against viruses. Im sure you knew that. Lets talk to 18 year old rosie mitford, from london, who is on holiday with her dad pete and brother harley in tenerife. They are in quarantine at that a star costa adeje palace hotel. Steve forester is stuck there too with his wife. Jeff reines daughter goes to a school in cornwall. She recently returned from a ski trip in italy and was initially told to take the next two weeks off school to self isolate. Alexsandra kuzmanovic is social media manager for the World Health Organisation shes working to tackle fake online news about the virus. Professor sian griffiths is chair of the Global Health committee and headed up the inquiry into the hong kong governments response to the sars outbreak. Welcome to all of you. Starting with rosie and steve stuck in that hotel in tenerife. How long have you been in your room . We have been in our room for about 2k hours now. In your room . We have been in our room for about 24 hours now. Are you allowed out at all . You are allowed out now they have tested our temperatures. They have given us a mask and you can wander about if you wa nt mask and you can wander about if you want but you should really stay in your room. What is the atmosphere like in the hotel . Obviously its an awful situation. Everybody is kind of keeping their spirits up as much as they can, really. How are you managing to keep up your spirits . We are just. Managing to keep up your spirits . We arejust. Me and my brother are checking the news a lot. We will make a plan if we are here for two weeks to try to maybe pass the time. And is hardly there . He is. Does he wa nt to and is hardly there . He is. Does he want tojoin us . And is hardly there . He is. Does he want to join us . Yeah. Hello. How is it going . Its all right. Are you bored out of your brain is . L it going . Its all right. Are you bored out of your brain is . A little bit. We are trying to come up with ways to pass the time. Do you have any work or school work you can do . A little bit of university stuff to get on with. Games. We have downloaded some programmes to watch. And the internet is working. In terms of information, what have you been told about how long you will be there and what happens when you come home . Very little really. The only information we are getting is online. I go down to the reception every hour or so and ask for updates and he pretty much said, we will let you know. Thats about it, really. They are keeping very cautious about it. I dont know where steve is in relation to you in the hotel, but can you hear me . I can, yes. Are the gates of the hotel locked . There was a police car at the back gate that moved on to the promenade by the sea yesterday. That isnt there today so i assume the gate is locked. At the front entrance there are police, guards and Everything Else to stop you going out. How do you feel about that . We are ok. Yesterday people we re that . We are ok. Yesterday people were around by the pool until lunchtime when we were told to go back to our rooms. 0ur temperature got checked last night at about 7pm. We we re got checked last night at about 7pm. We were given a thermometer and told to check our own temperatures this morning, which we have done. I have heard, but it is only through other people, that doctors will be coming tonight to check us over and then we see where we go from there. Physically, you feel all right, steve . Physically, you feel all right, steve . Yes. Just looking out of the balcony now, there are quite a lot of people wandering around the grounds. The official word is to stay in your room but it is not really being enforced. Ok. Have you got masks . Yes. We were given a mask and a pairof got masks . Yes. We were given a mask and a pair of rubber gloves yesterday. So if you leave the room you would put on the mask and that would protect the people from you, effectively . Yes. We have seen on the news that the masks are pretty ineffective for protection, other than you coughing. Yes, exactly. If you can all stay there, i will bring injeff in you can all stay there, i will bring in jeff in cornwall. You can all stay there, i will bring injeff in cornwall. Your daughter goes to school in cornwall. A couple of schools are closed. I think thats because your daughterjust came back from a ski trip in italy, and there is a hot spot in the north. What advice was she given . couple of schools in cornwall are closed. Two secondary schools that had ski trips in italy have advised to stay home. One of them was my Daughters School that allows them to go back on the first day. They all went to school on monday for a full day. On Tuesday Morning they went to school and the first thing went to school and the first thing we knew what a message to parents, good morning, saying they needed to be taken home and self quarantined for two weeks and they had to be collected as soon as possible. But thats too late because they had already been to school. This is one of the complaints a lot of parents had. There is quite a lot of outrage and disbelief on behalf of parents about the kids being in school for a full day and what the potential consequences of that were, because they would have come into contact with 1200 pupils in the student body. And the ski trip was in the north of italy . It was in the north but outside the coronavirus zone as far as but outside the coronavirus zone as farasi but outside the coronavirus zone as far as i know. Finally the school advised parents to collect their kids and stay at home for two weeks if they had been on these trips. Do you think thats the correct advice . I think the school is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Damned if they did and damned if they didnt. They were following Public Health england advice, and the advice of Health Secretary matt hancock. This came out and they did what they believe is the right thing. Personally i think that it was the right thing. Parents demanded all sorts of actions like closing the whole school for two weeks, deep cleaning. Some. 0ne whole school for two weeks, deep cleaning. Some. One said they were seeking legal advice and another pa rent seeking legal advice and another parent compared it to the reaction to chernobyl. My goodness. Do you think there is some sensationalism oi think there is some sensationalism ora think there is some sensationalism or a lack of understanding . think there is some sensationalism or a lack of understanding . I think there is. I am a journalist, so im not averse to the accusation that the media is responsible for some of the media is responsible for some of the hype, but there is a great deal of misunderstanding and misapprehension about the risk. I think that for healthy, teenage kids, the worst thing they will get isa kids, the worst thing they will get is a bad cold. But i appreciate some families have more vulnerable members and that risk is a concern for them. That is important advice. If you go to the nhs website you will see the precautions you are being advised to take. For 111 if you have been to Hubei Province in china in the last two weeks, iran, areas of northern italy and south korea or you have been in close contact with someone who has confirmed coronavirus will stop dont go to a hospital or gp surgery but to ring 111. Asjeff correctly said, you are potentially vulnerable to symptoms if you are elderly or have Underlying Health symptoms will stop so possibly if you are a teenagerfrom cornwall, even if you have these symptoms, you will probably be all right. Alexandra, you are from the world health 0rganization, you are from the World Health Organization, the social media manager. You are trying to tackle fa ke manager. You are trying to tackle fake online news, and also presumably get accurate, sensible news out there about coronavirus as well. Yes, hello and good morning from geneva. Thank you for having me. In my role as a social media manager, and with colleagues in house, we are doing our best to reach as many people as possible through digital platforms, to use the power of digital platforms to reach as many people as possible worldwide with Reliable Health information. Tell us what fake news you are seeing and how you are correcting it. As our experts have explained, this is a new virus, a new disease. So we are still learning a lot of things everyday about it. That creates space for misunderstanding and a spread of rumours from fear, which can be understandable. What we are trying to do as well using the digital platforms, we are listening to peoples questions and concerns and then provide them with the based responses. We have different products we are using. With the evidenced based responses. Unless you are deliberately not telling me, what is the biggest myth that is going round on social media about coronavirus . There are different myths about the source of the virus and also how you can be protected, which are not evidence based. You can check on the website, some of those include, if you eat garlic you will be protected, or if you spray your body all over with alcohol. Those are the examples. We are co nsta ntly those are the examples. We are constantly listening and updating this information. There was the question about whether the virus could be transmitted through mosquito bites, which is not the case with this virus. These are different concerns which we are updating and informing the public, if there is evidence showing it is not the truth. It could be worth you telling us now, because we cant say enough how this virus is transmitted. Can you remind people. At the moment the knowledge that we have, and how to protect ourselves from the spread of the virus is to practice hand and respiratory hygiene. It can be transmitted through droplets. You can find all the information, and we are co nsta ntly the information, and we are constantly spreading the word and calling on everyone to follow the who, or the calling on everyone to follow the who, orthe nhs, or calling on everyone to follow the who, or the nhs, or Public Health sources, institutional sources of information, so you are protected in the best possible ways from getting infected. Wash your hands with soap and water, cover your mouth. Its all sensible and common sense. Cover your mouth and knows with your tissue or your sleeve. Put used tissues into the bin and avoid close contact with people who might be unwell. Sian griffiths, you are chair of the public Health Committee that investigated the sars outbreak. Sars was also a coronavirus type. It can be very scary to a population. The hong kong population were very sensitised to things. When it started to spread in the community the anxiety rate was extremely high. Thats why we work hard to contain the disease within the close environment so in italy its with 50,000 people in those small towns. In china we saw the lockdown in wuhan and that lockdown has started to work. Cases are levelling off and we think somewhere around the beginning of february. People are beginning of february. People are beginning to get back to normal life. You are saying now because of the plateauing of the cases in wuhan, because of the measures they took, which seemed dramatic at the time, they are working. And its not just me saying that. Bruce aylward from the World Health Organization, who was part of an International Group who went to look at what lessons could be learned from wuhan and the knowledge we had gained, he said we have to be careful not to dismiss china and to look carefully at the lessons learned. 0ne dismiss china and to look carefully at the lessons learned. One of those was about lockdown, containment and prevention messages to the population. All of the things we have just been saying. Hand hygiene is very important. Be sensible. If you are asked to go into self isolation, do it. Look at the guidance, as our friend from the World Health Organization said. The guidance on self isolation from Public Health england is detailed and should be easy to follow. I was and should be easy to follow. I was a co nta ct and should be easy to follow. I was a contact back in sars days and i self isolated and the information was not as good then. So we have learned from sars. You might not know the answer to this but for people like steve and rosie and harley in that hotel in tenerife, they are obviously in isolation now for the next 14 days. When they are allowed to return to the uk, would you expect them to be asked to be in isolation in their own homes for another two weeks or not . We need to look at whether the disease has spread in the hotel. So far as i understand it it is the doctor and his wife. If the disease has spread there will be more cases so it will be like the diamond princess cruise ship injapan, where people who come back are asked to stay for another 14 days. There was good reason there because four of those patients were infected so that meant the disease was contained. To bring rosie and harley back in, if that ends up being the case then you just have to go along with it. Absolutely. We dont mind isolating when we get back. We just want to come back home now. We dont see the point, when none of us have symptoms, in staying here for two weeks and then isolating when we get back as well. Thats a really good point. 1. I want to make is that there are families who have only just to make is that there are families who have onlyjust arrived here. A British Airways flight was cancelled on sunday and its replacement on monday, which we were supposed to be on, was cancelled as well, so plenty of families from that British Airways flight have had to check into this hotel. We have only been here for a couple of nights but we are then supposed to stay here when actually that increases our chance of getting whatever is here rather thanjust being of getting whatever is here rather than just being sent of getting whatever is here rather thanjust being sent away, when we wouldnt have come into contact with the italian doctor in the first place. You have taken your temperature and that is ok. There are no symptoms for you. As far as you are concerned you could come back to the uk and stay at home for two weeks. Yes, and we think that would be much more effective than letting us stay in the same space as people who might have it or who have come into contact with this doctor. Im sure those options are being discussed by the foreign office. Its great that colleagues would agree to go into quarantine and you see why that is necessary. The idea that you are in a potentially infected environment and then come back and go into the community, thats how it can be spread. Essentially, im sure the government will be discussing with spanish collea g u es will be discussing with spanish colleagues how best to go about this and whether to do special flights etc, but those logistics do take time. I think when you are stuck in a hotel room, time goes slowly. I think it would be great if they were able to be brought back earlier. M sounds like rosie and harley and steve, you will just sounds like rosie and harley and steve, you willjust have to be really patient. And crack on with that University Work, dont waste the time. Steve, what can you do . Im assuming you dont have University Work to do im past that, unfortunately. I have a book to read but i will finish that off, i guess. One book. Watch a lot of daytime tv. Do you get British Television over there . We have bbc 0ne television over there . We have bbc one and channel 4. Those are the two English Speaking channels i have found. There is only so much daytime tv you can watch steady we are on daytime tv. We are on iplayer, quality television. I will watch that then. Im grateful to you all for your time. Steve, that then. Im grateful to you all foryourtime. Steve, rosie and harley. Professor sian griffiths and alexandra from the who. And tojeff, thank you for being sensible. Jeff, whose daughter goes to a school in cornwall and recently came back from a ski trip in italy. And while weve been talking, its been announced that the Health Secretary matt hancock will update mps on the coronavirus outbreak later today. He will make a statement to the house of commons after prime ministers questions and you can see that live on the bbc news channel. And if you want to get more of the facts on coronavirus, you can go to the bbc website bbc. Co. Uk health. I was on the nhs website this morning and it was really clearly written, well explained and seemed really sensible. Coming up later in the programme. The grammy Award Winning singer duffy has posted on her Instagram Account that she was raped and held captive for several days by an unnamed attacker. The welsh singer, who had disappered from the limelight, also said she was ok and safe now. And weve been out with new recruits on the latest initiative to train thousands more detectives. We have a big shortfall across england and wales. This new programme lasts three months. We will bring you exclusive access. Were going to talk next about that Instagram Post published by duffy last night in which she said she was drugged, raped and held captive for days. The welsh singer, whos won three brit awards and a grammy, went to number one in 12 countries with mercy, which was the uks third best selling single of 2008. I love you but i gotta stay true my morals got me on my knees im beggin please stop playin games i dont know what this is but you got me good just like you knew you would 0ur reporter Anna Collinson is here. Tell us more about what she said in her Instagram Post . She posted a very lengthy post on her verified Instagram Account last night, and in it she said she thought about writing this post many times over the years. She confided ina times over the years. She confided in a journalist last summer and she said speaking out felt amazing and now was the right time. I will read you a quote from it. She says, the truth is. She says some people may question why she didnt speak about this earlier, or didnt use her voice to express their painful stop her a nswer express their painful stop her answer was, how could she sing from her heart when it was broken. She now says she is ready and in the coming weeks she will release a spoken interview. We have reached out to duffy to try to get a comment but we have not heard back so far. And she was big before disappearing. She was massive, a welsh singer with an iconic look, big voice, catchy songs. To put it in context, adele and duffy started at around the same time and duffy was the big star. Everybody had their hopes pinned on her. Her number one hit was mercy, selling half a million copies, one of the big songs of 2008. Her debut album went seven times platinum, was number one in several countries, rockferry. When she left the stage, as it were, there were theories about what was going on and why. What were they . First of all, she appeared on a diet coke advert in around 2009. In that advert you see her riding around on a bicycle in a supermarket to stop a lot of people criticised her for sounding out supermarket to stop a lot of people criticised herfor sounding out of tune and said the advert campaign was a disaster. Shortly after that, her next album, the difficult second album, came out but didnt pick up much traction and she went off the radar after that. 0ver much traction and she went off the radar after that. Over the years, every so often journalists would put out articles asking where she had gone. Very often the theory was that she had made her money and shejust wa nted she had made her money and shejust wanted a quiet life. Now she has written this post and has talked about what happened, it might be another reason. What has the reaction been questioning elder has been a lot of love. People are shocked by the revelation, praising her bravery and excited about the possible move back into music. In her post she says she wants her decision to speak out to be a positive experience but she does not wa nt positive experience but she does not want her family to positive experience but she does not want herfamily to be positive experience but she does not want her family to be affected. In the wake of the death of Caroline Flack there have been messages asking for duffys wishes to be respected and for the media to listen to them. The actor and comedian chris 0dowd has tweeted, who was good friends with Caroline Flack he says. Its important to point out that duffy has praised the journalist she spoke to, describing them as kind stop could this mean at some point there could be new music from her . Definitely. In december she posted on her facebook and Instagram Account the caption 2020. For fans this was very exciting for stop it could be that this year is the start ofa could be that this year is the start of a new chapter for duffy. Police forces in england and wales are 5,000 detectives short. Politicans have warned this shortfall is allowing murderers to walk free. But a new Fast Track Programme set up by two detective inspectors is trying to tackle what the Police Watchdog has said is a national crisis. Police now is a graduate scheme in england and wales that aims to make people with no policing experience into detectives with just 12 weeks training before they start on the job. 0ur reporter sean clare has had exclusive access to two of the first ever police now detective trainees as they start out on their first placement. Emergency 999 response. Theres a stabbing thats just been reported in. And he can see a body inside. Police i dont want anybody to be in any doubt about the scale of the challenge to go from no policing experience to competent, effective, certified detective status over the course of two years. It is a big ask. I was 14 when Stephen Lawrences murder happened. He was murdered by four white men and the police took little action. The investigation was flawed because of these biased attitudes. I had quite a negative perception of the police for a long time, about what they do and how they handle non white people, essentially. Being a Police Officer growing up, itsjust not a position i want to associate myself with, or be a part of. Growing up, i was very interested in football, played in a lot of the local leagues. When i was about 16, i was signed by norwich city. There was then opportunity to represent england schoolboys. The first game that we played on sky was against scotland. In the second half i scored. Commentary kellys in unfamiliar territory. Options in the middle. And england have got a second goal this time by kenny reeves. That was something ill rememberforever. If maybe id put slightly more effort in and done everything i could to make it, then things could have turned out differently. So thats what ive tried to do with this. Ive worked in a fewjobs where you working there to get money for shareholders or for other people. And it didnt really motivate me. For a number of years i was soul searching what i wanted to do. I found the fire service and took up that opportunity. After ten years ijust wanted to do Something Different and have more of a challenge. And the Police Offers that. When you put that uniform on, you know its game time. Whatever day youve had, however you feel, as soon as you get into work and put your boots on, youre there to do a job. Game time. So were going to an rtc on a dual carriageway. So the cars gone into the central reservation. Theres two other cars behind it. Before this scheme i was a secondary School Business studies teacher. I suppose when someone told me, oh, youre teaching a gcse Business Studies lesson at 9am, i never got that adrenaline shooting through me, oh, god, im going to go and teach a lesson. Its definitely different to a monday morning marking work. I remember the first time i was in a police car. I was thinking, oh, theres a police car coming. Then i realised i was the one actually in it so weve just had through on our radio theres been concern for welfare at an address. Weve just had a message from a pcso stating that hes round out the address, the door is unlocked and he can see a body inside. With policing, you do get a real buzz in terms of, oh, someones in danger, i need to go and help them. You dont know whats going to happen from day to day. And the unpredictability of it is what also keeps it exciting. And so you can go home at the end of the day thinking, hopefully ive made a difference to that persons life. My first day on response, i was very nervous, because ultimately when i make a mistake, didnt want to make the wrong decision, which could affect peoples lives for a long time. Who do people call in an emergency . Its the police when they dont know who to turn to. Its where you cut your teeth, on the front line. You dont know what youre going to. Every days different. Absolutely love it. I see a similar quiet moment so what weve got at the moment is a burglary in progress. The objective is obviously to get there as soon as possible. Its 16 minutes, according to google maps. What reassurance can you give to members of the public . They might think, i dont want a kind of Fresh Graduate coming to my door. Everybodys got to start somewhere. My focus is on making sure that we, for those officers who join the Police Service through police now, that we give them absolutely the very best start that we possibly can. The question is, do you feel ready to go out into the field after having been trained for 12 weeks . And the answer is, yes, i do. Since weve turned up, weve found that they are deceased. Its the first time ive been to Something Like this, where theyve had to do a few investigations. At the end of the day it can be life and death. And if im really honest, before my very first shift when we went out, i was very nervous. You know, im not sure that anybody whos been to any of those things, you know, as i have, you know, during my policing service, would say that theres ever enough time to prepare you for some of the things that you see. From thinking it was suspicious to start off with, i think once theyve looked at the body more, it feels that she may have potentially had a fall, and then kind of been left in that position for a number of weeks. Theyre never well, for me, anyway, theyre never easy to get on. I dont think my height helps. Does it affect you at all, do you think . When youre there dealing with a body, you kind of have to take the personal element away from it and then think about that after, when youre dealing with the victim or the loved ones. What youre investigating could be one of the most traumatic times of their life. So its important to have some sense of sensitivity. So theyve gone in through the house . They havent gone in through the attic . Theyve gone through the front door. Its nothing to do with me. Ijust want them safe. Right. 0k. All right. Well go and visit them now and see whats happened. All right. Hello. Hi, are you pavel . Pavel, i am. Did you report a burglary to us, or somebody coming in . Yeah. It was you. Sorry, were eating. Oh, sorry. Bad timing. Just tell me what happened, basically. One went upstairs. We checked the roof. I think some of the skills that are really important as an investigator, are having that thoroughness. Have you got a description of him at all . Was he large build . Yeah. Nothing is missing or theres no damage or anything . So get your builder to come back tomorrow. Well give him the ring as well. Illspeakto him. If there is any more concerns, or you see anything else thats suspicious, then do give us a call back. For me, if ive done everything i can do for now, to make sure that that family are safe in their own home, am i happy that theyre going to be safe tonight and ongoing . And the answer to that is yes. It is really, really challenging. One moment it is dealing with what we might call sort of traditional crime, eh, you know, car crime or burglary, or Something Like that. And the next moment it is working with maybe the nhs, working with the local authority to offer support to somebody who is in a really, really difficult place. So there is concern for welfare of a female. Concerns it could be a Mental Health episode. Excuse me . Did you have a woman in there recently, acting very strangely . Yes, she was sat outside for quite a while. Yeah . She was talking to herself through the window and stuff. So weve met her on a few occasions and she does tend to come here because she has notions ofjumping in front of a train. This is one of the last locations that she was found, the last time she went missing. Its a role thats got a lot of responsibility with it. Taking peoples liberties away, seeing people in the worst times, if you like, and making decisions based on those. Its a big ask and a big task. Theres a stabbing thats just been reported in. I suspect they might send a Firearms Unit there. Idiot. He told me, my daughter is here and hes going to stab her and my kids. It sounds like theyve had some words or something, and he sort of said something along the lines of, oh, what do you think im going to do, stab the baby . So shes then said, 0h, hes got a knife, hes got a machete, and thats how it sorted of escalated a bit. In my career, ive come across Police Officers, whether they re uniform officers, whether theyre detectives, whether theyre working elsewhere, who have been absolutely fantastic, really at the top of their game. And some of those officers have had 35 years experience, and some of those officers have had 35 months experience or less. Hello, its the police. Can you let us in . Im 37 years old now and just joined the police. If i knew now what i knew then, i would have started thisjob straight from school. Definitely. And im envious of all the other guys and girls on my course that are ten years younger than me that are just starting their careers and they get to experience this job for a lot longer than what i will. Eh, that makes me a little bit jealous. Jump in gents. Eh, it has been tough, it has been hard work. Ultimately, by putting in that work it means youve got the knowledge when you come out the other end and now were putting it into practice. I havent had much downtime for the past five, six months really, which has been quite difficult. Its put a lot of strain on relationships with family and friends. And its meant that ive seen my kids less. They understand how important it is to me, and theyre willing to support me through this and help me. Ijust dont know how difficult it would be if i didnt have that support of family, really, and friends. Sean clare with that film. Really interesting, isnt it . Thank you for your messages. I was asking if you are currently a detective, what is yourjob like . This one says, i love myjob as a detective that currently have a high number of crimes to investigate and to be able to investigate serious and complex crimes to a High Standard is not sustainable. I feel this is crimes to a High Standard is not sustainable. Ifeel this is done crimes to a High Standard is not sustainable. I feel this is done to lower Police Numbers plus a whole new world material which has to be reviewed prior to a charging decision. Like mobile phones, computers, social services and school records, pretty much the minimum to be reviewed on every case and this takes time. No wonder i have cases which are 18 months old in my in tray. But from what ive seen in my in tray. But from what ive seen the recent recruits on the police now scheme, i am impressed. They will be welcomed with open arms. Of this former detective says, i cant see how anyone could become a competent dc within 12 weeks, when it took me two years, andi weeks, when it took me two years, and i worked very hard at it and i would also had been a Police Officer for five years before that so had that experience to rely on. Whoever decides to take on a fast track schemes is probably in for a big shock. This detective says, im from yorkshire, in reply to your question about what life is like for detectives in the current climate, its been a tough few years, staffing has been cut to the bone. Officers no longer wish to follow a career as a detective as this is a volu nta ry career as a detective as this is a voluntary role. Detectives are currently carrying 30 investigations each. They often offer late by many hours in the face of constant criticism from senior managers. Often detective run less money than their uniformed colleagues. Many are also moving from having the Police Pension decimated. Many still love thejob and pension decimated. Many still love the job and want to provide a service to the public, all we ask is we are given the resources, pay and pension that allows us to do this effectively. Thank you very much for those, really grateful for that. Earlier i spoke to david spencer, who helped set up police now now its ceo and john apter chairman of the Police Federation which represents rank and file officers. Weve just watched the film together, do you see any problems with what we saw those recruits . No, the passion that they displayed uncertainly from one of the officers who had concerns about about policing younger, its completely changed and is refreshing. Im passionate about policing. Ive been a Police Officer for 27 years and i came in the more traditional route. Their passion, their enthusiasm, their experience of policing, albeit in quite a short time, is exactly what i would expect. Of course we had, and have, some concerns about the new routes into policing, because they are not what we are used to. And when you break away from tradition policing is traditional, people within policing are traditional. Let me put this to you then. When this scheme was launched youre Police Federation colleague Karen Stevenson described the scheme as an insult to experienced, hard working detectives. Do you stand by that view now . I completely understand. We represent the voice of Police Officers and detectives. There is a crisis with detectives, we dont have enough of them and they are under immense pressure and breaking because of the pressure they are under. What detectives were saying to us is that they work really hard through their probationary period. They have been on response, theyve got all sorts of experience to go into being a detective and its not an easy role. And they felt it was an insult that somebody could come along after a very short period of time on the street, literally a matter of weeks, and then become, from what they see, a fully fledged detective. So i understand that concern. Do people, detectives, still feel like that . Certainly some detectives do feel like that. Lets bring in david. Do you understand that feeling, from detectives who have spent years on the beat, gathering experience, dealing with the public, to get to the level they have reached . They see this fast track scheme and perhaps it doesnt seem fair. I understand that completely. Like john, i came through the traditional route as a Police Officer and became a detective after a couple of years, so i completely understand that. We, in policing, we need more people to be detectives. We have a shortage of detectives nationally. We know that. If we continue just to rely on the traditional way then we will never get those posts filled. I think what the public really need, there are people out there in vulnerable positions right now who need good people like kenny and larry, actually, as well as all those experienced expert detectives we have already got. The public and those colleagues in policing, we need to find different ways of bringing people in, people like kenny and larry. As a member of the public, if you call the police and either of those two gentlemen showed up, youd be really happy, actually, wouldnt you . They are reassuring, they are sensible. They were motivated and they cared. Absolutely, yes. And if i put it in this way, when the scheme, when police now was first created, i had real concerns. I shared the concerns that my colleagues were telling me. But i then went out and met some officers who had gone through police now, not as detectives, but as response officers and neighbourhood officers. And i sat down with those officers, brilliant individuals, no better than other officers on the team, but passionate, committed individuals who just want to be Police Officers. I think the problem is originally there were some chief officers, chief constables around the country, who were putting colleagues from police now on a pedestal and saying they were the best of the best. And actually, after a few years we want you to leave policing and go into other professions and then share the virtues of policing. What the officers are telling us now is, i dont want to leave this brilliant, fantastic job. I want to give Something Back to the public. Thats a good thing. It sounds like your original concerns have been allayed somewhat . Slightly, but we have to work with police now because you are completely right, we are looking to recruit 20,000 officers, which in reality is 53,000 officers over three years. We cant just stick to the traditional ways because otherwise we are not going to succeed. 0k. £20,000 per annum. Is that enough for these graduates . No, not at all. What should it be . Well, we have put forward a recommendation that it should bejust over 24,000. Thats based on evidence. And just on the point of training new recruits, over the next three years we will see policing have more officers under three Years Service than ever before. Our experience is going out the door. We need to pay them properly, we need to reinstall their pensions that they have worked so hard for, and we need government and society to respect us more. Businesses, politicians, and charities have today published an open letter calling on the government to ban these plastic sachets as part of the environmental bill that will today have its second reading in parliament. Our reporter Michael Cowan is here. Why do they want to ban sachets . Well, these sachets are very hard to recycle, theyre made of a composite plastic metal material called high density polyethylene. They are not able to be recycled anywhere. They are not able to be recycled anywhere. But crucially its because of how many we use around the world each year. Vic, how many of these sauce sachets do you think we use . I could pretend i dont know. I did read it at one of the headlines at ten oclock so i know its absolutely loads. It is, its mind blowing. 855 billion sachets. That is enough to cover the entire surface of earth, and if you laid them out end two and they would stretch 72 million kilometres. That would get you 189 chips from earth to the moon, one way, not return, trips. Thats according to plastic planning to launch this open letter today. We are using more of these than single use plastic bags, about 500 billion of these every year and we are using more of them. What can we are using more of them. What can we use if not sachets . In some places they are switching to the humble glass jar like this one we borrowed from the bbc canteen. Restau ra nts, ta keaways, borrowed from the bbc canteen. Restaurants, takeaways, you take this, you doll up whatever you want onto your meal and put it back instead of using these sachets. Its not hard. The signatories of this letter, what specifically do they want . They are calling for the government to close the legal loophole when it comes to plastic sachets and what they mean by that is implementing some sort of law that would ban them. There is currently no law in the eu or british law that does that. The government says the environment bill going through its second reading todayis going through its second reading today is not the right vehicle to ban these sachets. They say it needs to come from a secondary bill like Plastic Straws which is due to be banned later this year and they say if we want to ban these, that is the root is going to have to go. But the government do say in a statement they are committed to tackling Plastic Waste which blights our streets, rivers and oceans, and say they are making real progress, including cutting supermarket plastic bag sales by 90 , through the 5p charge, banning straws, streamers, and setting out plans for a Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers which will push up recycling rates. Thank you very much. Newly released Police Bodycam footage from florida has captured the moment a six Year Old Girl was arrested at her school in orlando. The girl was restrained with plastic cable ties and taken to a waiting police car after misbehaving in class. One of the Police Officers involved has now been sacked. We are going to show you this video footage. It is upsetting. Heres what happeend. 0k, shes going to be coming with us now. Stand up. Youre going with them, baby girl. Stand up. Just give him your hand, ok . Come over here, honey. Its not going to hurt. Oh, no no i dont want handcuffs on help me lets go. Your grandmother will come pick you up, ok . No i dont want to go in the police car you dont want to . No, please you have to. No please no appreciate it. Call me if you need something. Are like, erm, the restraints, are they necessary . Yes. Imean, he i mean, he was actually showing off about that, wasnt he . He is the guy who has been sacked. Really, really upsetting and those teachers clearly looked. It sounded like they were in shock, didnt it, and you can understand why that footage is the most watched on the global website . The Environment Agency says its dealing with extremely high water levels in shropshire where the highest level of flood alerts are in place in ironbridge and shrewsbury, but that flood defences have held. Barriers downstream along the river severn were breached overnight, at bewdley in worcestershire. We can speak to Morgan Foster who lives and works in shrewsbury. Morgan has documented the flooding with photographs on social media. Just tell us exactly where you are now. Yet we can see how high the water is but where are you exactly . So this is one of the main roads in shrewsbury, smithfield road, normally packed full of cars, especially at rush hour, but right now it is pretty much a ghost town river running to the middle of it. So that is the centre of shrewsbury, is it . Yes, just down here, right in the centre, normally cars, from wales, from this direction, all through town over here, but its just silent at the moment with most roads into the town currently blocked. The river their floods are not. I have relatives in pretty much in the centre of shrewsbury and eventually after yea rs had in the centre of shrewsbury and eventually after years had to get their house built on stilts to protect them from the river flooding. Its a regular occurrence, isnt it . Do people get used to it . Are they able to get insurance . know some businesses have struggled to get insurance but flooding on this scale is not as regular, this is the worst weve had it in 20 yea rs. Is the worst weve had it in 20 years. Look over my shoulder here and you can see the river is nearly breaching this wall. To get onto the road like this is not a regular occurrence. There is localised flooding occasionally around town and some of the lower lying buildings have been able to avoid it in recent years but to give flooding like this when a a lot of businesses and residents. Any idea how long it will be before they start to subside . Well, we had flooding a bit like this less than one week ago, not as severe as this, not only took a couple of days, 48 hours to recede, but so far, this water is starting to recede. Yesterday evening, it was up to this curve over here and now its a few metres down the road so things are slowly receding but its going to be a good few days until all of this clears. Morgan, thank you so much. Youve done a brilliantjob of showing us around the town of shrewsbury in the centre, really appreciated, thank you. Morgan foster, who lives and works in shrewsbury. Thank you for your messages about the fast track detective scheme. This of you assess what a brilliant film about the detectives. We have to pay public serva nts detectives. We have to pay Public Servants on our behalf who are in danger. Thank you to all of them. We have to pay thanks to public serva nts have to pay thanks to Public Servants who are in danger on our behalf, where dismissing there. This one says, im retired thank god, and the Police Service is woefully inadequate to solve staffing problems. I have 32 years experience, you cant fast track experience, you cant fast track experience, its not going to help. It is letting down the public. Thank you for your contributions today. Bbc newsroom live is coming up next. Thank you for your company today. Have a good day. Bbc newsroom live is coming up next. Hi there, good morning. Once again, a mixture of sunny spells and wintry showers. This weather watcher photo just shows how you can see the snow on the tops of the hills at lower levels, plenty of rain, and that the same situation through the course of the day, really. Xiao was becoming few and far between this afternoon, so lengthy spells of sunshine. A blustery north westerly wind, most of the showers wintry and moving their way into the west of scotland. Temperatures, 6 9. Through tonight, we will see some rain moving its way across southern areas, cloud advancing ahead of that and the rain will be across many southern areas, but across wales, the midlands, eastern parts of england, going into thursday morning, it could well be a covering of snow in places and certainly for the morning rush hour, bear that in certainly for the morning rush hour, bearthat in mind. Certainly for the morning rush hour, bear that in mind. We will see a mixture of rain, sleet and snow clearing away and that there will be brighter sunny spells developing into the afternoon and temperatures the same as today. Goodbye. We are not advising a ban on travel to the Canary Islands or to tenerife, but of course what we do know is that although the risk of getting severe complications from this virus are much lower for children than healthy adults, for older people and people with serious underlying illness they are more at risk.
