With me are the director of centre for labour and social studies former Labour Police and crime commissioner, Faiza Shaheen and the Deputy Editor of the daily express, michael booker. Tomorrows front pages, starting with. The telegraphs front page talks of the chancellors announcement to pay two thirds of workers wages of businesses forced to close under tighter lockdown restrictions expected next week. The Yorkshire Post reports warnings from the regions political leaders that theres a threat to jobs in the north despite the support package announced by rishi sunak. an insult the guardians front page also looks at the reaction of leaders in the north to mr sunaks package
who say it will not alleviate the Financial Hardship of a new lockdown in those areas likely to be the hardest hit. Meanwhile the daily mail celebrates the front line covid heroes who have made up part of the queens birthday honours list. The mirror, too, looks at those who have gone above and beyond during the pandemic including footballer Marcus Rashford who fought for free meals for disadvantaged children during the summer. So lets begin. Thank you so much for coming back good to see you. Lets start with the times. Nice to get a bit of good news. It is nice to hear that various people that have given so much during this pandemic and the lockdown are being honoured in this way as well as alongside people like mary berry and Marcus Rashford, who
has done so much for children that are going hungry in this country. I think one of the things people ask after this is of course that the right that the queen should honour people that have been on the front lines, social care workers come nhs, people who have been honoured that are set up food banks, gave millions of people free food, and we have to really ask though if these people are then going to get a pay rise. Our supermarket workers, social care workers, are they also going to be honoured to a higher wage package, like nurses and doctors . And also we have to ask why so much work has to be done in the community. We went into the pandemic with a lot of child poverty. The communities have really had to pull together and fight for people and see Vulnerable People get much more viable so there
are underlying questions and changes that are needed to make sure that we really honour the work that is been done over this lockdown and the pandemic. Michael, despite those questions, it is a good thing to have these 400 virus workers and volu nteers have these 400 virus workers and volunteers on this prestigious list. We see what people thought. I think it was 4000 nominations made some people from all over the country, they knew people in their communities who made a difference and they felt were unsung heroes. In the end, it is unfortunate that it is onlyjust 400 as you say link to the pandemic, im sure they could have been a whole lot more and theres been a lot of criticism of theres been a lot of criticism of the honour system over the years, rewarding the wrong people, cronies and things like this. It is kinda been rushed through and hopefully in the future at a future honours, new years, and maybe next summer as well, more people have done gone that extra mile during the pandemic to help other people outcome on this
list we have carers, doctors, nurses, people who put on online quizzes, people who raise money for oii quizzes, people who raise money for on the front of the times we have a woman who has an 0be for bringing out thousands of meals in our community as well. So plenty of people out there who have done a lot of good, probably people out there iiow of good, probably people out there now doing things that havent been rightly rewarded and doing it quietly. Hopefully as i said we will be rewarded as they go on but interesting the also talking about some members of the Sage Committee have been given honours but also mentioned that some people link to the pandemic have had the honours withheld because of ongoing questions over how things have been handled, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out. That is a good point. It could be early days for some of those judgements. Looking at the daily mail and they
are running the same story about the salute to the covert heroes. You touched on this point. A lot of doctors and nurses on this list. But would better pay be a good way to actually think them . Yes. There are actually think them . Yes. There are a number of campaigns that are being run by nhs workers, people in the social care sector that are saying that we really appreciate the clapping and everything and im sure the people that are honoured in this list are really proud and happy to get it to him it is nice to see and of course he needs to be there, but we also need to recognise that this wont pay the bills. You forget that many people in the social care sector are on zero hour contract and the minimum wage. The way to really honour the hard work, we really found out what matters in society, it is only right that a third of key workers are paid less than £10 an hour right now. We really need to do
something about that in order to truly honour the work that has been done. Do you think this might cause any reflection in terms of what some of the people at this list is highlighted, key workers, carers, nurses actually arent and how society thinks them for their service and that Financial Way . Certainly i hope so. Rewards like this, though people will appreciate them, they dont pay the bills. People have short memories, once some relief of getting the pandemic out of the way it next summer, fingers crossed, for a lot of us it is quite easy to forget these people and get back onto our lives. I way i we re and get back onto our lives. I way i were writing that would be to give them more money and appreciate them more in that way. But we have spent a lot of money at the moment on various things. Were on the fourth bail from the chancellor in terms of furlough and things like that. I today. We have a lot of bills to
p5y~ today. We have a lot of bills to pay. You talk to people who have been rewarded within mve or whatever the honour is in these honours, they would get paid more, but you cant do that at the moment because we will be paying a lot of money back in the next two years. And we will be talking about that furlough scheme a little later. First, lets go to the independent. Cases have doubled in a week. Mps are told it is critical. This is not the message we we re is critical. This is not the message we were hearing to hear some weeks before christmas. No, definitely not. It is pretty bleak looking across the papers in terms of the story details on where we are. There isa story details on where we are. There is a note here in this article from the chief medical officer that says we are back to march levels and it does feel like groundhog day and i think the frustration as well is that the government has failed to get on top of this public health
crisis. Most notably, still through the testing tray system which is just not been up and running their way should be, earlier on this week, people will remember that 16,000 cases went missing because of an xl spreadsheet. Test and tray system. People are willing to make sacrifices. But where government has shown incompetency again and again and these really quiet big mistakes that seem quite almost School Boy Error in terms of an xl spreadsheet, then as a consequence of contacts have been contacted. Microsoft excel. It is frustrating for a lot of people out there. That aside, michael, this coronavirus is really quite hard to get a handle line. We are seeing similar trends in other parts of europe come in the United States as well. Yes. We see trends like this all over the world and people come you can see the people in charge dont know quite what to
do because there is that balance between the economy, keeping that going and keeping the money come again and also health and i think we are ata again and also health and i think we are at a different stage with this one in terms of we know a bit more about the disease, and doctors can treat it a lot better, there are no drugs to treat it. I think when they first started treating this thing, it was simply paracetamol and that seem it was simply paracetamol and that seem to be about it. We have got an increase in capacity in the nhs, but there is some whirring noise is coming out and jonathan van tam, the chief medical officers who says we are a critical point, he clearly is one if you sharpen up people about this and they want people to follow the rules. This is what part of these last few days to spin around. They dont want to do a full knock down from it doesnt look like there will be a full lockdown but they want people to start taking it very seriously again, get back to the basics, washing hands, keeping social distancing, hopefully that will help because there has been talked in some areas where things,
these numbers are plateauing a little bit, so hopefully the role of six message is getting too but i think at the moment, they are when if you sharpen up our minds about this thing and we have been told there will be a long hard winter and it does look like it from the reports that are coming out tonight. Speaking of a long hard winter, the front page of the Yorkshire Post. It is talking about the north looking set to face a winter hardship. That is the other factor. Not every region is equally affected. In that right, faiza . Effectively, yes it is really the north midlands seem to have higher cases i one of the things that weve heard this week is leaders and the mayor of Greater Manchester of the leaders across the country just come manchester of the leaders across the countryjust come out and say we are suffering these local lockdowns and oui suffering these local lockdowns and our businesses in our workers and
the public are not being supported through a furlough scheme. A furlough scheme is coming to an end at the end of this month. And we are really worried about the economic considerations of that. And we heard andy burnham basically saying i will look at legal reasons of course the safety government you have to give us money safety government you have to give us money and i think partly as a consequence of that today we heard chancellor rishi sunak announced a new programme. He previously said that he wouldnt extend the furlough programme. But it doesnt like and effectively that is what he is doing although at a much lower rate. Michael, i suppose one of the questions that underlies these decisions is how reliable is the data that is being used to make these decisions. The data being used to decide which regions go into air harsher lockdown than others or which businesses close before others. I think that is what a lot of the regional mayors have been asking for as well come a bit clearer on that. I think coming out
of some of the meeting preferred up today, it is clear the government are waiting to speak to some of these metropolitan mayors, work with them more closely, and i have as much infectiousness as there has been over the last few days. They are saying we found some good discussions here but we are still not seeing the actual numbers. We are not saying the science come if we are following the science fair enough but show with the science. There were some quotes coming out from some of those mayors who had this meeting but there will be more meetings tomorrow i think with the government as to where these lockdowns are going to be. They are still not hearing that. We all want to use the numbers and know what it is based on because we see an adult some stories coming out the idea that the spread was only based on data from about 90 pups. That doesnt seem to the layman that is scientific as you think it should be to lead an entire country and a decision. So there is question marks
over that and just going back to the story, the north has borne the brunt of this. They feel in many areas theyve already been a lockdown for a long time. They needed bailing out a long time. They needed bailing out a bit more. They already saved us to go some way towards looking after them but we need a lot more. I dont know about you, but 67 of wages, i would put my budget on the 100 of my wages. Some of these people have beenin my wages. Some of these people have been in fellow already during the previous six months, so there will bea previous six months, so there will be a lot of families very worried and they want to see their government looking after them. That is of course a very important point there that peoples lives have been massively disrupted by the closing of businesses. And of course everybody understands there is that balance between health and the economy but looking at the daily telegraph, it is talking about that furlough scheme, some type of furlough scheme, some type of furlough scheme, some type of furlough scheme returning as lockdown and looms again. But faiza,
is there a sense this will be enough. How has this been received . Well, i think many things, the government is stepping forward and saying there will be something because previously rishi sunak is spoken about viable job. A lot of jobs are unviable for now because they are still a lockdown. They said they are still a lockdown. They said they would extend the programme. I think some are believe that whilst this is last minute, he has come forward. To be fair 230 of your wages and a lot of businesses that are shutting or having to shut are going to lockdown are the hospitality sector. Which is already low pay. Two thirds. The average pay is £8 per hour. If you think about two thirds of that, as your wage, going into christmas, extremely concerning and one of the things that many regional leaders are coming out and saying is this is really not enough. Going as far as
to say it will save the community. Your thoughts on further returning, michael . You can see rishi sunak, its been fairly poignant over this period. On the furlough return. He has been looking confident. He is the man returned to to bail us out. The fourth time now i think. It is clearly needed. They needed to and after with a safety net before they announced a lockdown. They have the right way around. We will see with the measures are next week. 67 of new wages, it is not great for people who havent already been banking their full wages for the la st banking their full wages for the last few months anyway. In the video that he released this afternoon, he didnt look entirely sure of himself. He is one of the cabinet hocks who has been really back on the idea of another lockdown. He knows how much money this country has and how much this country can afford to keep paying out. It looks
afford to keep paying out. It looks a little bit of furled eyebrow at the moment and worried but it looks like the cabinet, people like matt hancock, and Boris Johnson like the cabinet, people like matt hancock, and borisjohnson himself, the prime minister, they have been listening more to the medical scientists on this and believe that it looks like there has to be more lockdowns, regionally as it is at the moment, and will have to have this safety net and will have to have other people running short of the essentials. Before we go, look at the guardian. This is an industry that feels particularly hard done by the hospitality industry, faiza. Yes. Absolutely. People wont go to restau ra nts a nd yes. Absolutely. People wont go to restaurants and then there was the help out scheme off the back of that case is set arising. Now we have the 10pm curfew. Back to eat out to help out. Its been hard to manage. You
can imagine getting food, cooking, you dont know what is going on from how many people will walk to your door. And as i said come it is already notoriously low and many people are on zero hour contracts. This is part of the reason we seen a massive rise in youth unemployment compared to adult unemployment and some forecast now playing that at 70 by the end of the year which is going back to 1980 level. When of the things we have to think about, this is an about all the money for the government. If the government does not step in at this point and people lose theirjobs, that will cost the state and society more over the longer term and a short term measure like extending the furlough scheme. And that is really what we need to be doing at this point. If you look at other countries, germany, france, they have much more generous schemes still in place, and the problem is by rishi sunak
cutting and reacting rather than looking forward to making sure things are in place, notjust a week before but earlier, many have been saying to him you will have to have targeted furlough scheme. Either recently and i would just help to ease things over or it will create these gaps and companies dont know what is happening. They let people go. Michael, can i get your thoughts and 30 seconds or so on this . Well, just furlough scheme is great that it is there, we hope it supports people but i think what we need to cross our fingers about at the moment is that cases do settle down, we dont need it for the six months that will be put in place from november the ist, we hope the recent spike has been due to universities going back to schools, i think that is the one thing we need to hope we dont have to use it for six months absolutely. I want to thank you both very much forjoining me. A real pleasure to have you on. Thats it for the papers tonight, my thanks to faiza and michael forjoining me tonight. Goodbye for now. Good evening. Here it with their latest sports news. This years delayed french open final will be contested by the 12 time champion rafa nadael and world number one novak djokovic. The former england defender and now commentator, said on social media it was a really bad move by the premier league. Supporters groups feel its a step in right the direction, but the price could be lower. Everybody is in difficult times, and we certainly look to broadcasters to have another look at that price. Obviously we dont expect to get it free, but a lot of our members are concerned that this may give them problems. One of the very urgent things for a lot of clubs to do is to return the season to get money a lot of them holding on to soak supporters can afford to pay the price whether its £15 or whether we succeed to getting the broadcasters to lower it a bit. And thats all the sport for now. Hello there. During friday, we saw colder air sweep down across the whole of the uk. Accompanied by a fair number of showers as well. This weekend, it remains on the chilly side. Again, a mixture of sunshine and showers. The showers much more widespread though on saturday. We have the colder air because the winds are coming in from the north or northwest. And that is because we have lower pressure sitting to the east of the uk, and higher pressure towards the west. During the second half of the weekend, the High Pressure moves a little bit closer, so the winds will not be as strong, and the showers will be few and far between. Saturday could start dry, sunny and cold across southern england but the winds are blowing down these bands of showers
which could be heavy at times and pushing them southwards. The showers continue to rattle into northern scotland. Sheltered Central Scotland seeing fewer showers and more sunshine. And the afternoon may well be drier across northern england. It may not be too many showers for the southwest of england. 14 degrees likely here. For many, it is 11 to 13 degrees again and feeling colder and the blustery winds especially when the showers come along. The winds will gradually ease after dark. The showers continue to run into coastal areas. For many in land parts, it becomes dry and clear and cold. Those temperatures will be down to five, 6 degrees in some towns and cities but easily two or three in some rural areas. On sunday, we have one or two showers first thing for northern ireland, wales and the southwest. They wont last long. The showers there are will be running into eastern scotland and down those north sea coast of england where the winds are still rather keen. Elsewhere, the winds will be much lighter, we will see a build up of cloud developing but it should be dry with sunny spells and temperatures very similar again, 12, 13, maybe 14 degrees on sunday. The weather starts to change as we move into early next week. Instead of those northerly winds, we look to the atlantic and we have weather fronts coming in from the west. Much more cloud around on monday. We have outbreaks of rain, steadily pushing its way eastwards. It does mean for some Western Areas in the afternoon we see sunshine, giving temperatures a boost, but after a dull, damp day and a cold start across eastern areas of uk, temperatures may struggle to get into double figures. And there is more wet weather around as we head into tuesday as well. We end up with low pressure sitting across more southeastern part of the uk, bringing wind and tain. Further northwest, higher pressure, so it should be drier and brighter. This is bbc news. Im nancy kacungira.
