Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are olivia utley, deputy leader writer for the sun, and broadcaster and authorjohn kampfner. Welcome back both of you. Lets look at some of the other papers that have already come in. Lets start with the financial times. It carries a picture of one of the thousands injured in that massive explosion in beirut. But its main story is microsofts bid for the chinese social media app, tiktok. The guardian has a picture of the huge blast as it ripped through the lebanese capital. Ripping through the port area as well as the rest of the capital. But the newspapers lead story is a warning from the uk labour leader, sir keir starmer, about a long winter unless Virus Testing is improved. The daily mail leads with a warning from doctors, who say the lockdown has taken a huge toll on britains wider health. The daily mirror reports that three teenagers jailed for killing a police officer, pc andrew harper, in berkshire will have their sentences reviewed after claims they are too lenient. They were found guilty of manslaughter. The childrens commissioner says pubs and shops should be shut, to reopen schools, if a trade off is required. Thats according to the telegraph. Following up on chris whittys comments a few days ago. And, the times says the bbc is facing a growing revolt over the end of free tv licences for most over 75s. So, lets begin. Should be kicked off this time with the daily mail, olivia . The real cost of the lockdown, familiar story, picking on another survey of senior doctors. Any new startling statistics . I dont think we have heard that much yet about how people with heart problems have been affected. We have heard a lot about cancer, the male picks up on heart problems as well which have been not picked up during lockdown. I think it has. It is a mixture of tests being delayed by hospitals. Hospitals pushing up routine tests while wearing that were going to be full of coronavirus patients and these routine tests pick up cancer oi these routine tests pick up cancer or heart problems are a lot of the time and are really important for detecting disease early on. On the other side there have been people who heard the messaging stay at home, protect the nhs, save lives and felt that they would be putting too much of a burden on their doctors if they went in and thought, i will wait until lockdown is finishing in a few weeks and get my long checked out or whatever the problem was. And in the lockdown stretched on and the problem got bigger and now you have these diagnoses down by nearly 50 in one of the months of lockdown, i think that a summer in that story. That is startling. Cancer hasnt just that a summer in that story. That is startling. Cancer hasntjust taken a holiday for covid. So this is going to catch up with us. It is just tragic to think we have all been staying at home protecting the nhs, saving lives but that might cost lives after all. It would take a months cost lives after all. It would take a months time if we ever know to find out what that medical costs of lockdown has been. John those other illnesses, ailments arent going to be fixed if we get a second spike or a second lockdown potentially as keir starmer is pointing out that this testing system really does need to be addressed in his piece in the guardian otherwise we are going to face a long, bleak winter. The governments approach to covid has beena governments approach to covid has been a study in incompetence. I did a programme on radio four on the bbc on what it takes to be competent as a leader, britain, brazil, and famously the United States have, and abject positions. The one area and government and the Broader Health community seem to be quite quick in dealing with was the issue of capacity, there were nightingale so called hospitals in east london, birmingham, that huge new bed provision and it was nobodys thought that they were not taken up. The nhs was able, not the question of equipment but the question about was able to accommodate people. But whereas we have just been talking about, the Collateral Damage on that was in other ailments. And it wasnt the case that all doctors and all medical staff were thrown into covid and redeployed. Bizarrely, there we re and redeployed. Bizarrely, there were instances of specialists, not their fault, but specialists who are underemployed during covid because people were simply not going to get themselves tested and operations we re themselves tested and operations were simply not taking place. And some doctors and specialists i have been speaking to over the last few months have said the nhs stands for the National Hospital service not the National Hospital service not the National Hospital service not the National Health service because those other areas were overbroad during this crisis. Can we look onto the telegraph because we have quite a few to get there, olivia. and shops to reopen schools. This is a message from the childrens commissioner and long feel that repeating the arguments that i think it was the chief scientific officer who said a few days ago that we are going to have to make some difficult decisions, economy versus education or whatever, where you stand on this . I think children really have to come first now, i care passionately that the economy can get up and running again and im terrified about the prospect of a very deep and long recession. But if children are back at school we dont know what we are doing to a whole generation of childrens life chances. This is something that is unprecedented, i hate to use the word but it is an unprecedented situation seeing what happens if you ta ke very situation seeing what happens if you take very Young Children out of education for seven, six months and see no adults of part from their pa rents, see no adults of part from their parents, their siblings and dust the other children, what would that due to their speech, communication skills with my it is not english and math that they just learn a skills with my it is not english and math that theyjust learn a school. Its all these interactions. It could be seriously damaging well into the future and we just dont know what it is doing. Also we say a choice between schools and the economy but as we heard over and over again throughout lockdown the problem is if the schools are closed, parents can go to work and the economy shuts down anyway. I think she is right, get schools open and then we can fit Everything Else around that. I think Anne Longfield is right it is a horrible story from israel about an outbreak taking off in a school but the vast majority of evidence shows that children arent epidemiological he important in the transmission of this virus. But their education is obviously incredibly important. And john we have seen with the Examiners Office in scotland how u nsatisfa ctory Examiners Office in scotland how unsatisfactory lack of education, lack of teaching, and back of sitting exams is for those people who perhaps didnt get the grades they wanted because of their marking down policy that all exam boards have had to use now. It has been variable, it has been random, how do you assess where exams dont take place if there is continuous assessment, you could continue in that way but some children do better in exams. There has also been that sense of depriving. Im not saying children love to take exams, but there is a sort of depriving children of the great sort of moments in their lives. You are defined in some ways by gca shed sees defined in some ways by gca shed sees my gca set these or if you go to university. By the whole paraphernalia around taking finals exams and the celebrations afterwards. And children have had that deprived but i agree with olivia. The bigger question is not around that, its around early years, and it is particularly around children in disadvantaged backgrounds, the sutton trust that will set education outcomes has produced a series of reports from early on showing all the progress that has been made over the last ten happened 20 years has in months been wiped out for some because middle class affluent families with parents that are able to take on some of the slack with computers and physical space in which children least ru na round, physical space in which children least runaround, imagine if you are a large family in one or two rooms and with very little means of any form of diversion vodafone education of your children. And some private schools, the curriculum has continued without change. Children wearing uniform and the entire school day just wearing uniform and the entire school dayjust replicated online. The story beneath that, rishi sunak may raise Business Rates after the switch, the claw back . May raise Business Rates after the switch, the clawback . After the surge. We all knew some sort of taxes would have to be raised at some point, this enormous bailout package will need to be paid for somewhere. It is not clear from the toe graph story what his plan is. He talks about high end offices and shops. From the telegraph story. That would not be such a bad thing to claw back money it putting ordinary high speed businesses at risk. Perhaps that will be a good thing but i am sceptical about raising Business Rates was up we have seen high street shops go under one after the other and we hear this horrible bit me every day of thousands more people losing their jobs because more Retail Businesses have gone under. And a lot of them do feel they are crippled by Business Rates. The tenant pays the Business Rates. The tenant pays the business rate, not the owner of the building. Real shot managers and their staff who suffer from hype is its rates. I am not saying that soon act concept policy is not right, but perhaps there is a version that we can put on hire and places that can afford a bit more but i am initially sceptical. John can they afford them because they have moved online . Throughout history whether it is or plagues great moments of social strife, sometimes they create new trends, new trends, new momentum is. Other times they simply accelerate them. In this case, it is rapid accelerationjust as you them. In this case, it is rapid acceleration just as you say, tim, high streets shops, physical bricks and Mortar Retail have been under the caution for an incredible amount of time because often times they dont offer great service, you can park in ware or the public transport provision is poor or the service isnt very good or whatever. Under the cosh. But sometimes it is sippy because the base costs for a shopper so much higher due to Business Rates, due to rent and other factors also it is simply because. Whether it is amazon or other digital providers, they absolutely clean up and into this government and others absolutely grasp the question of the inequality of arms between digital providers and physical providers, then the direction of travel is only going to continue going in one direction. Big international story. Photographs of that on our watch of the front pages. Lets go to the times. It blasted across the room, my flat smash. These two small explosions and a huge explosion in the port in lebanon in beirut. The authorities there saying it was chemicals kept ina there saying it was chemicals kept in a storehouse from 2014 but for many people, a shocking reminder of just the violence and chaos that this poor country has experienced over the past several decades. Absolutely. I really recommend reading that very short first person piece by their correspondent in beirut, it is incredibly powerful. Blessed across the room, he went downstairs to speak to his neighbour, she came out crying and covered in blood and he has talked about he has lived in beirut for a while and has experienced attacks and knows what it is like to be in a city under siege but he had never experienced anything like this before. And we talked about this earlier but he just doesnt understand and i dont think anyone quite understands how a city which ran out of money earlier this year, this country is going to build itself back up again. We just have to hope that neighbouring countries do everything they can. |j to hope that neighbouring countries do everything they can. I think offers are coming in because of the terrible state of the economy there but of course a lot of International Donors will be worried about the corruption which has brought beirut and lebanon to its knees. John if i made we will go into the storyjust above that. Curse dementia with different millions of men as rates plummet. Good news but nobody seems to know why. And all questions around dementia seemed to be areas where medical science has still got some way to go and given the amount we have been talking about the extent to which other forms of physical illness and physical health and Mental Health have been hugely affected by covid, i must admit this is one of those stories that ijust scratched my head and wonder is this correct . Is this some aerobic survey as you sometimes get in science where you get a trend temporarily going in one direction . A rogue survey . What exactly is the basis for this improvement . And perhaps this improvement took place before covid and we will see what happens afterwards. I was reading through the information we have on the front page, it could be linked to perhaps decreases in smoking, better cholesterol drugs, improve heart health. But on the face of it, good news and it does come from Harvard University research. They are known for the quality of the research compared to other institutions. Should we go on to the daily mirror, olivia . The sentencing of these teenagers in the killing of pc and your harbour. They were charged with manslaughter, there was a big fuss over that at the time. Pc and your harbour. And now a call from the policeman positive motherfor the policeman positive motherfor the sentences to be reviewed. Yes andi the sentences to be reviewed. Yes and i think quite a lot of people we re and i think quite a lot of people were relieved that the judge gave a very long sentence for manslaughter. His pronouncement was that their crime was pretty much akin to murder and he gave them a long sentence for manslaughter. The problem is the sentences are automatically cut in half so these boys who sniggered their way through the trial while this very dutiful policeman who came along when his shift had finished to help someone whos quad bike was being sown, his widow was crying in the court and easement will be put off an 8 10 years before they are 30 . I off an 8 10 years before they are 30 . I do hope that the attorney general picks this up. And i think that it would restore a lot of people plus i faith in thejustice system if he did. Long sentences for manslaughter, right at the top end and this was a decision of course taken by the cps about what to them with. Yeah, i mean, it is invidious to try and second guess unless you we re to try and second guess unless you were following every minute and every piece of evidence of the trial which i wasnt, and as far as i am aware, perot comes after two thirds, not one half of a sentence. Pa role not one half of a sentence. Parole comes. In the issue of surprise and shock for the family and perhaps for all our the large pa rt of and perhaps for all our the large part of the general public was the fa ct part of the general public was the fact that the murder charges were not endorsed by the jury and they we nt not endorsed by the jury and they went instead for manslaughter but within the framework of manslaughter, i think it would be quite hard, again i am no legal expert, i think it would be quite ha rd of expert, i think it would be quite hard of a sentence of 16 years to be seen to be on the weak side, the issue at stake and the anger and fury and disappointment of the family was the fact that they werent convicted family was the fact that they we rent convicted of family was the fact that they werent convicted of the murder charges. We have time for one more. Maybe i dont get out enough or certainly understand the stars headlines but i dont get this. Rise of the pot burglars. You are with the sun so you might understands better than i do. What you mean burglars they get in through the letterbox . I dont understand it. Sorry, i didnt understand it. Sorry, i didnt understand at all either |j understand it. Sorry, i didnt understand at all either i thought it was bot as opposed to box in other words in terms of cyber. One of the key ways of burglars getting through letter boxes is then getting and using contraptions to ten take keys out of front doors and wetting themselves in. I get that but they have a picture of a dalek on the front. I am clearly i think, you should get somebody from the daily star on breakfast tomorrow to interrogate on exactly what the methodology is of this burglary. the journalist is watching about maybe she can tweet up about that for us both. On that slightly confusing note, we will have to leave it there for some. Thanks to olivia and john. That is our second look at the papers. Hi there, good evening, im Chetan Pathak with your sports news. We start with fulham who are back in the Promised Land of the premier league after beating brentford 2 1 in the championship play off final at wembley. There was nothing to separate the sides after 90 minutes but then in the first half of extra time, joe bryan spotted david raya in the goal off his lane and took full advantage from 40 yards, a nightmare for the keeper. When he moment though for bryan and he wasnt done. A couple minutes from time, he sealed fulhams return back to the top flight. Brentford did get on the score sheet after death but it was too late to make a difference. Now, premier league clubs involved in the latter stages of european cup competitions are said to be given a delayed start to the new season. Those affected include Manchester United who face austrian side lask in the Europa League on wednesday. Wolves are also in the last 16 whilst Manchester City and chelsea remain in the champions league. A 30 day period has been agreed in principle which means any club involved in the quarterfinals of either competition will not start their season on the 12th of september when the new premier League Campaign begins. And it was a thrilling finish to the final one Day International in southampton as ireland beat the world champions england by seven wickets for just a ball to spare having already lost a three match series, ireland was set a target of 329 to win. Owen morgan top scored for england at the century but paul hit 142 and andrew burned 113, what a partnership that was before kevin obrien here got the winning run to seal a famous win for ireland and crucially, his shot victory also gives them ten points towards world cup qualification. Now, rafa nadal has confirmed he will not defend his us open title later this month. The world number two says he doesnt want to travel due to the ongoing pandemic. Its also been confirmed that the madrid open has been cancelled due to a spike in covid 19 cases in spain. Ive been speaking to our tennis correspondent, russell fuller. Well, nadal gave us a hint a couple of months ago that he wasnt really keen to travel to new york at this particular time, and hes spent practising regularly on clay with the french open in mind. The french open hes trying to win for a 13th time and that starts just two weeks after the us open finishes. In a statement as the entry list of the us open was released, nadal said, after many thoughts, ive decided not to play this years us open. The situation is very complicated worldwide. Covid 19 cases are increasing. It looks like we still dont have control of it. He says, in conclusion, this is a decision i never wanted to take, but ive decided to follow my heart this time and for the time being, id rather not travel. So, a combination of things, i think. Not wanting to travel to the United States to play tennis in that particular environment and also perhaps thinking at the age of 34, is he really able to defend both his grand slam titles on different surfaces on different sides of the atlantic in just a six week period . A no nadal, no federer, we know no ash barty, a no nadal, no federer, we know no ash barty, the women on several number one, women players pulling out too. Where does this leave the us open, russell . Well, i think the Us Tennis Association will actually be relieved and quietly pleased to see the strength of this entry list. Those are glaring omissions that you have mentioned but 19 of the womens top 20 are in the field. 15 of the mens top 20. Now there should be an asterisk attached to that because of players can pull out of course if they want to. By entering attornment youre buying us of time. If you do not enter you can play unless you are lucky enough to get a late wild card. It will be interesting to see with four weeks to go into the us open begins how any players who have committed to actually turn up and play in new york but my feeling is and has been all along that actually the overwhelming majority will. Next to snicker and the 2005 champion sean murphy has become the biggest casualty of this years were a chamfer chip training 6 3 overnight. Murphy couldnt recover eventually losing ten. The man from time and will be playing mark selby next. And thatis will be playing mark selby next. And that is all your support. There is ration to full imposter puff women on the bbc website. But for me and the team, good night. Full. We have an uneven distribution of rain around at the moment. Very wet across the uk at the moment and still no sign of any significant ran across southeast england.
