a dopamine rush like a drug. and for other people, it was a sense of community. there was a lot of isolation, a lot of people staying at home and not having a connection. and suddenly here were these people who presented themselves online, which is this consistent force of kind of control, manipulation, even to the point of it feeling kind of intimate, like in the middle of the night, in the darkness of your bedroom. they were there for you. this made a lot of sense to me. to try to figure out why people believe in this conspiracy theory, i've been in touch with a lot of different qanon followers, mostly through the messaging app telegram. most of them were hostile, i was blocked from the app at one point after some complaints. but some were really friendly and obliging, keen to help me understand the gravity of what it is they believe is going on in the world. i received hundreds of messages, links and videos at all hours
