Is near absolute. Well, only the minaret of their mosque remains. Everything else homes, streets a whole community is reduced to this. It is overwhelming. And everyone weve spoken to here says they believe everyone that was missing has died, there is no hope left of finding survivors. Some supplies are arriving for people who have lost everything. All but cut off from the outside world, residents say they need much more. Translation there is no house to live in. If there is no help from the government, we have nothing. And what the earth took away, they are already trying to rebuild. These are people shattered by loss, but having to find the ways to keep going. Tom bateman, bbc news, morocco. Ukraine has launched a substantial attack on the Russian Black Sea fleet. Moscow says ukraine attacked sevastopol with ten Cruise Missiles and three unmanned boats. Russias Ministry Of Defence says it successfully intercepted most but that two ships undergoing repairs were damaged. Earlier we heard from our diplomatic correspondent, paul adams, whos in kyiv and has been following the story. We dont yet know exactly how it was conducted, but the head of ukraines air force has congratulated his pilots, which is a fascinating detail, suggesting that unlike previous attacks on sevastopol, which used primarily primarily drones, put that next to the russian statement about the use of Cruise Missiles and you have the very real possibility, and it is only that at the moment, we need to verify this, that this attack used western supplied, british or french storm shadow or scalp Cruise Missiles. If thats confirmed, that would probably be the first time those missiles, those weapons had been used inside crimea. Certainly the attack, judging by the Video Evidence overnight, seemed to involve significant weaponry. It caused huge explosions and a massive fire. We think that that was focused on a dry dock area where two vessels of russias black sea fleet, one large Amphibious Landing craft and one intriguingly kilo class submarine, were both undergoing repairs. Now, we have not yet seen evidence this morning of what damage was done and obviously we will be looking out for that. But if all of this is confirmed and if we see evidence that those two vessels were significantly damaged, that would be one of the largest ukrainian attacks on russias black sea fleet in a very long time. The issue of voter id has become more of a global concern in recent elections here in the uk the government is being warned that there is a significant threat of disruption to the next General Election because of a new requirement that everyone must have voter id when they cast a ballot. The Elections Minister Has said she is confident in the ability of local authorities to roll out voter id nationwide, but both the Electoral Commission and local government staff responsible for polling are calling for changes. Heres our Political Correspondent damian grammaticas. Last years elections in england were the first outside Northern Ireland where voter id was a necessity. Were not allowed to film inside polling stations, so this scene was set up by the Electoral Commission to show the changes in action. Do you have your id on you . Yes. A Driving Licence or other approved id required to vote in person. The Electoral Commission estimates that at least ia,000 individuals couldnt cast a ballot because of this. 199. Most who wanted to vote were able to, but some were unaware they needed id, some dont possess the right type. And disproportionately affected were disabled, unemployed or younger people, and those from ethnic minorities. Many didnt know you can get a special voter certificate, but had to apply a week or more before polling day. The local Government Information Unit is now warning of serious disruption to the next General Election. Election administrators worry they lack the staff to cope with the National Roll out of voter id. And the Election Commission says the government must act because it says there is a significant threat to future elections. Among its recommendations. More types of id could be accepted, voter certificates should be easier to get up to just before polling day and someone should be able to vouch for you on the day if you dont have id. The government says it will consider the recommendations and look at areas for improvement. It says its confident local authorities can implement voter id, which it believes will help stamp out what it calls the potential for voter fraud. The Liberal Democrats say that is a non existent problem, and the id laws must be scrapped. Labour says the government must recognise the potential for wider damage to democracy if they fail to make the changes to the system. Damian grammaticas, bbc news. Would have been better off under her brexit deal. In a wide ranging interview for the bbc s Political Thinking Podcast with nick robinson, the former pm said that leave and remain hardliners had thwarted her deal. Quite rare to hearfrom theresa may in this sort of wide ranging interview. Since she left office as Prime Minister, shes been Making Interventions and saying things in the commons from the backbenches, but she hasnt given many of these sort of very reflective interviews. But she has got a book coming out and that tends to make politicians a bit more amenable to that. And so she has given this interview in which she looks at a number of issues that affected her time as Prime Minister between 2016 and 2019. In it, she addresses, for example, the grenfell towerfire, which happened in 2017, in which 72 people died when a block of flats caught fire. And she apologises for not having gone and met the people in those buildings in the immediate aftermath. So shes taken a very reflective view. But as you said, the issue that really dominated her time as Prime Minister was brexit. In those years, her government was responsible for negotiating a Withdrawal Agreement with the eu, which she then failed to get through parliament. She couldnt get it approved by the uk parliament. And as she addresses that and as you said, she talks about that, saying it, having it was down to hardliners on both sides. Heres what she said. If you like, the hardliners on either side. So the hardline brexiteers and the hardline remainers who wanted a second referendum and just wanted to stay in, were increasingly trying to find ways to thwart a deal that i think would have been better because it wouldnt have given either side 100 of what they wanted, but it would have given the country a better overall deal. Now, another major thing that she did as Prime Minister was to write into law the uks commitment to reach net zero, to not be putting any additional pollutants into the atmosphere by 2050. And there has been thats been quite a live discussion in uk politics in recent weeks. There have been some suggestions that maybe rishi sunak was looking at rowing back a bit on that. That was made by people like the former minister, lord goldsmith, when he resigned the other week. Now, i should say Downing Street refutes that. They say that the fact that Rishi Sunak Created A Department For Net Zero shows his commitment to that. But there is certainly a lot of lot of discussion about this in uk politics at the moment. Theresa may made her position on it very clear. She said that the uk needs to go Full Throttle. If we poke, shake our fingers at people and say you can neverfly again, you can never drive a car again, you can never eat meat again. Were never going to get where we need to be because people are just going to say, no, hang on a minute. No, thats not me. We have to take people along with us and i think thats important. I think the uk should be grasping that Economic Opportunity as rishi says, he wants it to be aboutjobs, he wants it to be about economic growth. I think it really can be and i want to see the government coming Full Throttle behind that. So her view there that they should be going Full Throttle, but still echoing the view actually that Downing Street has been putting out that you need to take people with you on the move to net zero. As i said, a very live discussion within uk politics at the moment about how that happens and how that gets there. From theresa may addressing quite a wide range of issues that affected her time in Downing Street. You can listen to the full interview on the latest episode of political thinking with nick robinson. More than 5003 people have died after floods in the city in libya, derna. 5300 people. Stay with us here on 5300 people. Bbc news. Hello. This morning we saw our first frost since the start ofjune and coldest Uovernight Temperature since the end of april. But it did mean a bright, sunny start for many and for most, sunny spells continue through the day. Changes in the northwest later. Its this area cloud here already spilling its way in, going to bring more and more rain across Northern Ireland and eventually western scotland too. Northern ireland and eventually the cloud that we have seen across east anglia and south east continues to break up through the afternoon. Dry here, sunny spells. Its the breeze easing down a little bit as well. Mostly sunny spells. But we will see a bit more clouds far west of england wales, isolated shower. But its Northern Ireland and the West Of Scotland where the lead up to the evening rush hour will be an increasingly wet and windy one. Temperatures today across the uk actually on par with where we should be for this stage in september. Rain this evening in Northern Ireland, clear some Rain At Times Ireland clears, some rain at times tonight in scotland and then strengthening winds across the Northwest Highlands and islands could see winds top around 65 miles an hour. That will have an impact on the ferries as we go into tomorrow morning. Rain spreads as far south as northern england, north West Midlands and wales to start the day. Its this Weather Frontier which will grind to a halt across the central swathe of england. Wales once again tied in around that area of low pressure, which will be moving across the far north of scotland with strong to gale, if not severe Gale Force Winds here. Sunny spells south of that. One or two showers around. Might be a bright day for much of northern england, but the further south you are will see the cloud outbreaks of rain or drizzle mainly across parts of the midlands, lincolnshire and wales. Some of that gets heavier later on. Far south of england stays dry and bright and starting to feel a bit more humid again. And that slightly more humid air will push its way northwards as we go through the night into friday. The rain shifts its way northwards to starting out across parts of northern england, north west wales, the isle of man, edging far northwest should be drier, brighter and less windy compared with thursday. Further south, well, we should see some sunny spells develop more widely through the afternoon and temperatures creep back up into the 20s with a slightly more humid feel to take us into the weekend. But whilst were dragging in that slightly more humid air, were going to see some Weather Fronts around, low pressure close by to the southern half of the uk, initially, bringing in outbreaks of rain, some of which will be heavy and thundery. We could see that develop a little bit further north as well as we go through into sunday. Thats how its looking. Take care. Strike action takes a dent out of the uk economy. The Energy Company bp has announced the resignation of its chief executive bernard looney, stepping down with immediate effect. It follows a review of his previous personal relationships with colleagues. Mr looney had set out a plan to make the Energy Giant Net Zero by 2050 but had more recently come under fire from environmental groups for watering down his initial targets. Our business editor, simonjack, reports on what we know about this situation. This is a Bombshell Announcement at the very top of one of britains Biggest Business and most globally recognised businesses. Bernard looney has been at bp all of his professional life, since the early 90s. He spentjust under four in the top Corner Office behind me at bps global headquarters. Whats emerged is that in may of last year, an anonymous source informed the board about allegations about his personal conduct with colleagues. Now, the board looked into that at the time. Mr looney admitted hed had a small number of personal relationships. They looked into that and found there had been no breach of their compa ny s conduct. However, in the last couple of days, its emerged that very recent allegations of a similar nature have emerged, and mr looney has admitted that he wasnt fully transparent with the board at the time of that first review. And so he has resigned with immediate effect. Now he has been credited with putting bp on a course to a greener future, although criticised in some quarters for dialling down those ambitions at the same time making enormous profits here. But of course, its not the first high profile wave of dismissal weve seen at a time where there has been increased and some would say overdue scrutiny of Senior Executives relationships in the workplace. Apple has just unveiled the latest version of its flagship iphone product. The new iphone 15 will come with a usb c port for the first time, to fall in line with upcoming eu rules, a move which some Industry Experts have warned could cause mountains of e waste. Our technology editor, zoe kleinman, has been taking a look. The theatre of a wealthy company well versed in performing for its fan club, apple has unveiled its latest iphone. Were so excited. You could join us today for some big announcements. It might not look vastly different to the ones already in the hands of millions. Lots of the changes are hidden within the device, but one thing youll notice straightaway is the new usb c charging point. Under pressure from the eu, apples had to ditch its own Lightning Cable in favour of the connector used by most other smartphones, tablets and even video door bells. Although the tech giant kept quiet about the reason at its big event. Usb c has become a universally accepted standard. Were going to make some history together today. It was back in 2007 that apple co founder Stevejobs Revolutionised the Smartphone Market and turbo charged the fortune of the worlds Richest Company. The iphone remains apples best selling gadget, but with a top Dollar Price Tag and people hanging onto their handsets for longer, its no mean feat persuading the customers in these stores to buy them. Especially when were seeing incremental improvements rather than a big bang. And its all about a slightly better camera, a new connector and other things like that. But lets not forget, the mobile phone is still the most prolific Consumer Electronics device on the planet. Theres1 billion or more going to be sold this year. Everyones got them in their pockets. And the iphone is a fantastic franchise for apple. Small updates, but theyre still going to sell a lot of them. The operators of the panama canal say they are considering further restrictions on the number and size of ships crossing daily because of a serious drought affecting the region. A total of 116 vessels are currently waiting to enter the canal, much higher than usual. Heres our Business Reporter david waddell. The panama canal handles about 5 of global trade. Now shipmasters Traversing The Canal One Way or the other between the atlantic and Pacific 0ceans save their vessels about 8,000 nautical miles of sea time, or 15,000 kilometers. The challenge is that every time a ship passes through, it costs the canal system about 190,000 tonnes of water bled from lake gatun, which feeds the canal. Right now, thats simply unsustainable, especially with an ongoing drought in the region. Some ships have been restricted in the number that can pass through. Others are constrained by their draught thats been reduced too by the panama authorities. That means some ships have been Offloading Cargo onto trains to make it from one side to the other. Other ships simply have to batten down the hatches and make the much longer passage around cape horn. In other news. Hello from the bbc sport centre. Lets start with some International Football, as real maridsjude bellingham inspired england to a win over their closest rivals, scotland, in their anniversary friendly at hampden park on tuesday. Bellingham scored the second goal and then set up harry kane for englands third as they won 3 1 against a team who had won five out of five in their European Championship qualifying campaign. Well, scotlands goal in that match came through a deflection off englands defender harry maguire. Hes featured for his country in this International Break despite getting limited game time for his Club Manchester united. And the criticism directed towards maguire brought this reaction from the england manager. Its a joke. Ive never known a player treated the way he is, not by the scottish fans, by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is. They have created something that is beyond anything i have ever seen. He has been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful england team for decades. He has been an absolutely key part of that. Ive talked about the importance of our senior players. He has been crucial amongst that. Well, scotland will have to wait to have their place at euro 2024 confirmed, after norway beat georgia 2 1 in group a. It means, mathematically, norway could still break into the qualifying positions, but scotland need just one win from their last three games. Put in the Competitive Group that were in, five wins, 15 points. Thats what we have. So i told the lads, it counts as being a success, so it would be nice to have a positive result then to make it even better. But the objective of what we come in to do has been done. Obviously, we didnt want to lose to our old enemy, but on the night, england were better, so sometimes you have to take your medicine in football and tonight, well take our medicine and try and improve. Plenty of nations around europe were in qualifying action last night. Italy got perhaps the most decisive win, their 2 1 victory over ukraine means those two sides are level on points going into the final stretch of group games. Sweden will struggle to qualify from group f after defeat at home to austria. Romanias important win over kosovo was interrupted for 50 minutes after provocative chanting from a section of the home sides fans. Elsewhere, in friendly action, germany won their first game since sacking coach hansi flick, beating france 2 1. In the early stages of World Cup Qualifying in South America, the reigning World Champions made it two wins from two. Argentina beat bolivia 3 0 and could even afford to leave lionel messi out of the squad altogether. Chelseas Enzo Fernandez got the opener before goals from Nicolas Tagliafico and nicolas gonzalez. There were also wins in South America for brazil, who earned a late 1 0 victory over peru, and ecuador, who beat uruguay. The Group Stage Matches at the davis cup continue around the world on wednesday, with Great Britain one of the nations hoping to make it through to novembers knockout stage. Their team is in manchester for the first round robin match against australia. France and switzerland make up the rest of the group. But britain have been boosted by the return of andy murray the former world number one forms part of a five man squad, alongside cameron norrie, dan evans, neal skupski and jack draper. Nfl superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers is out for the season, after he tore his left Achilles Tendon on his debut for the new yorkjets. An mri exam on tuesday confirmed that the 39 year old, four time Most Valuable Player suffered a complete tendon tear early in the game against the buffalo bills. Rodgers had spent his 18 year professional career with Green Bay Packers until he asked for a trade in the off season and with Rodgers Turning A0 in december, theres concern that one of the most prolific passers in nfl history might have played his final contest. That statement goes on to say the government says if a Funding Request for this medicine is not approved by an independent panel of experts, it cannot intervene in that decision. Before we go, a reminder of our top story. That is more than 5300 people have died after floods in the libyan city. That comes from a local minister. The number could double, that minister goes on to say. More details on our live page. Lucy hopkins is up next. Thank you for watching. The cloud that we have seen across east anglia and south east continues to break up through the afternoon. Rain this evening in Northern Ireland clears, some rain at times tonight in scotland and then strengthening winds across the Northwest Highlands and islands could see winds top around 65 miles an hour. The rain shifts its way northwards to starting out across parts of northern england, north west wales, the isle of man, edging in across Central Southern Scotland and Northern Ireland. Far northwest should be drier, brighter and less windy compared with thursday. Take care.
