This is the scene in new yorks time square as protests that have spread to more than 75 cities enter their seventh night. In other news, countries across the world start easing their lockdowns, including brazil, worst hit by coronavirus in latin america. And we look at the effects of the pandemic in the classroom as children return to school in england, but with new social distancing rules. Welcome. Thanks very much forjoining us. An independent autopsy has been released into the death of george floyd, an African American man, who died in Police Custody. Heres one of the forensic pathothogists who conducted the autopsy. The evidence is consistent with mechanical asphyxia as the cause of death and homicide is the manner of death. Were going to show some disturbing footage in a moment, of George Floyds arrest an event which sparked the worst racial and civil unrest in the us for generations. It was this footage that went viral, showing three Police Officers kneeling on the unarmed mr floyd, with officer Derek Chauvins knee on his neck. Mr floyd can be heard saying, please, i cant breathe several times. Mr chauvin has been charged with killing george floyd. A scheduled Court Appearance has been delayed by a week. Ben crump is a civil rights attorney, acting on behalf of the floyd family. George died because he needed a breath. He needed a breath of air. Soi breath. He needed a breath of air. So i implore you all tojoin his family in taking a breath. Taking a breath for justice, taking family in taking a breath. Taking a breath forjustice, taking a breath for peace, taking a breath for our country, but more importantly taking a breath for george. And heres his co counsel part of the familys legal team, antonio romanucci, speaking about the other Police Officers who were at the scene but who have not been charged. Not only was the knee on georges neck a cause of his death, but so was the weight of the other two Police Officers on his back, who not only prevented blood flow into his brain, but also air into his lungs. That makes all of those officers on scene criminally liable and without a doubt civilly responsible. Nada tawfik is in new york. Lets get some analysis. Well, i think officials like those here in new york would be concerned about that information further fuelling anger here over the death of george floyd. You can see in stores behind me that have been vandalised, have been victims of looting already preparing for another night, but it is important to know that a familys independent autopsy challenge is a preliminary one from the medical examiner, that official autopsy, which said that really there was no physical evidence of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation, even though the combined effects of restraint with mr floyds Underlying Health conditions and possible toxins in his system basically contributed to his death. Here, the familys doctors and attorneys were very clear they thought this was a homicide by asphyxia. They say that ambulance was essentially a house for ambulance was essentially a house foer ambulance was essentially a house for mr floyd, who they believed died right there on the scene. He was found without a pulse after the incident. Earlier, George Floyds brother, terence, was speaking at the scene of his arrest. In every case of Police Brutality the same thing has been happening. Yall protest, yall destroy stuff and they dont move. You know why they dont move . Because its not their stuff, it is our stuff, so they want us to destroy our stuff they not going to move so lets do this another way. Thats right, come on now, brother. Lets do this another way cheering and applause the brother there of george floyd, terence floyd. Protests, many of them violent, have spread to more than 75 cities, in what many are describing as the countrys worst racial and civil unrest since the 1960s. In portland, oregon, Police Clashed with demonstrators using tear gas and stun grenades in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Fires were also seen burning in the streets. In new york, chaos erupted in the borough of manhattan, with piles of rubbish set on fire and protesters throwing bottles and other objects at Police Officers armed with batons. In the soho district, looters smashed windows and stole from upscale stores. This was minneapolis the city where george floyd died while being detained by police protestors were forced to run for cover when a truck drove at high speed at the demonstrators after having apparently breached a barricade. Quite extraordinary scenes unfolding there in minneapolis. Several thousand people had been marching along a major highway. That was from the site where george floyd lost his life. In louisville, kentucky, the army and National Guard blocked off streets during protests over the deaths of breonna taylor, who was killed there by police, and in protest over the death of george floyd in minneapolis. Arrests were made and many people detained. Elsewhere there was looting with stores broken into in the la suburb of santa monica. And in philadelphia, stores were ransacked and Police Officers in riot gear and an armoured vehicle used pepper spray to try to repel both looters and rioters. Large scale protests also took place in denver, atlanta, boston, miami and oklahoma city. And it doesnt end there. This is the seen live in new york, where its approaching three iop and in the afternoon. Times square, sorry, for ten p the afternoon. Times square, sorry, forten p m, the afternoon. Times square, sorry, for ten p m, where they were gathered there an hour or so ago, listening to the results of that independent autopsy that was announced in minneapolis and we had many chances, cheers and applause and angerand many chances, cheers and applause and anger and fist pumps there as tensions are indeed heightened as many were listening to the results from the doctors, saying that george floyd died of mechanical act asphyxia, that was the cause of death caused by pressure on the body. They went on to say in that press c0 nfe re nce body. They went on to say in that press conference that the other offices at the scene would be culpable, in their opinion, of homicide as well. We havent had a direct response from the Minneapolis Police department, but the legal tea m police department, but the legal team representing george floyd made the point that this is notjust about an unarmed black man against a white police officer, this is about systemic racism and also Minneapolis Police department in their handling of how this has unfolded and years, they said, of racist actions against they said, of racist actions against the community there. But as we said, we are waiting to hear a reaction from the Minneapolis Police department. But this is the scene live in new york as protesters are expected again for a seventh night, and we have just heard from a number of News Agencies that the new york mayor will be imposing a curfew at iip mayor will be imposing a curfew at lip and local time in new york to try to curb the protests there and try to curb the protests there and try to curb the protests there and try to quash any violent protests that may unfold. Across the country there have been claims that some Police Officers are using Excessive Force to disperse protests. This happened in los angeles a patrol car was caught on camera driving into at least two people, before reversing and leaving the crowded area. Shocking scenes there. La police are conducting a full investigation into the incident. Its one of many captured on camera. Heres new york governor andrew cuomo. Some of the video is, frankly, inexplicable to me. What do we do about it . I have asked the attorney general, who is an independent elected official, to review the Police Conduct activities in the protests last night, the night before, if there is one tonight. If that radio looks at those videos and finds that there was improper Police Conduct, there will be ramifications. President trump has continued to dismiss the protesters as left wing extremists, and has rounded on americas state governors over what he called their weak response to the violence that has erupted since the death of george floyd. Barbara plett usher is in minneapolis. Its one week ago that george floyd was killed at this area, and this is where the memorial has been set up and people have been coming to reflect on that, and also on the tumultuous week since, but mr trump is not doing any reflection, it seems. He is speaking very bluntly. He told governors that they were weak because they had not more forcibly, aggressively put in law and order at the weekend. He said that they needed to dominate, otherwise the protesters would run all over them and, quote, make them look like a bunch ofjerks. And he said that washington would see an intensification of Security Forces over the coming day, he said we are going to clamp down very, very strongly. And this is really a president under siege. Lets move away from the us for a moment. Because england has seen the biggest loosening of the lockdown since it was imposed ten weeks ago, with as many as six people allowed to meet outdoors, and some aspects of daily life returning to a semblance of normality. In scotland, wales and Northern Ireland, groups of people are allowed to meet, but otherwise many of the restrictions remain in place. In england, some Primary School pupils had their first day back at school, though not all schools opened, and its not yet known how many parents have chosen to keep their children at home. Open air markets and car showrooms have opened for the First Time Since the lockdown was introduced. The first competitive sport has resumed, with horse racing and snooker, but neither allowed any spectators. It comes as a further 111 deaths were reported in the last 2a hour period. Taking the number of people who have died after testing positive for covid i9 to 39,016. Our education editor branwenjeffreys has this report. Welcoming them back to school. First to arrive, year 6. For riley and his mum, louise, relief that hes back for his last term. Like, even though he is going to be back for six, seven weeks tops, and then have another six weeks off, its still nice for him to go and get a little bit of learning, because we couldnt get a lot done at home i think im going to actually like being with my friends as much as i used to be. All right, then, off we go. This is rileys new, smaller class group. Socially distancing from the start of the day. We followed them separately from the rest of the school. Into a classroom, each to their own desk. No books or pens shared. Riley, you are here, sweetie. From lockdown to a new reality. Good morning, everybody Even Assembly is now online. From the head teachers office, to the classroom. It is so lovely to have you all back in school. What have you been up to . Most year six pupils were here today, but some parents of reception or year one children kept them home. They know that school doesnt look normal. I think theres still fear, in terms of the pandemic that we are going through, and i hope the more that we can show that school is successfully open at the moment, and it is safe, then more parents will send their children back. Through the day, washing their hands. No noisy playground at break time. Just small groups. So, they are back with some of their friends, but having to keep their distance. And they cant mix with any other children in the school. So, although this is a day that many of them will have been looking forward to, it is not back as normal. It is like, we are more spaced out, whereas we are usually quite close together. It makes me, like, happier because i know i get to see the people i have been with my whole entire life. In wales, there is no date for schools to open. Scotland and Northern Ireland start their return in august, leaving dads like martin home schooling his son samuel. We trust the school to give us what we need, and we are following that lead. I think the thing that worries me for samuel is that school is about more than just lessons. He is missing his friends. He is missing the social aspect of school. Lessons under the trees, but despite precautions like this, warnings still that england has taken this step too soon. We are following the scientists, who tell us that its too soon, that Contact Tracing isnt working and who say that in a fortnights time, Contact Tracing could be working and the level of infection could be half what it is now. For riley, the end of a tiring but rewarding day. Still absorbing how Different School looks now. Stay with us on oustide source, still to come countries across europe begin to ease their lockdowns, with cafes, bars and Tourist Attractions reopening. Scotlands first minister Nicola Sturgeon says coronavirus guidelines could be enforced by new laws if people break them. Restrictions were relaxed on friday, allowing more people to meet outdoors. However, the first minister says while a vast majority abided by the rules, a small minority didnt comply, with police dispersing nearly 800 gatherings on saturday. Nicola sturgeon had this warning ealier. Do trust and continue to trust the majority to keep those groups are small and to stay within the rules, but it is worth being clear. In fa ct, but it is worth being clear. In fact, i have a duty to be clear with you, that if there is continued evidence of even the minority not abiding by these guidelines and travelling unnecessarily. If people meet up in larger groups or if they are making journeys that risked spreading the virus, we will have to put these restrictions on group size and travel distance into law and we wont hesitate to do that if we think that is necessary for the collective safety and well being of the population. This is outside source live from the bbc newsroom. An autopsy commissioned for the family of george floyd whose death in Police Custody has sparked protests and unrest across america, has found he died of asphyxiation due to pressure on his back and neck. June ist marks an important day for many countries around the world in their efforts to try and ease lockdown restrictions. Lets start in europe. In the netherlands, bars, cinemas and theatres are open again, but with only 30 people allowed inside at a time. And the countrys renowned galleries and museums are opening again to visitors, but things will be different as our correspondent Anna Holligan explains. Well, the first thing is the numbers. They are allowing a fifth of the number of visitors and every day, which of course means it will bea day, which of course means it will be a lot quieter. If you can get a space because they arent allowing people to just walk in off the street any more. You have to book your 15 minute time slot in advance. The good news is there is no limit placed on the amount of time you can stand in front of the masters, so rembrandt, the near and of course and stood on to so many cultural attractions of course amsterdam is home to many is cultural attractions. These masters were here before the pandemic and they will be around long after it is gone. Its a similar story in other parts of europe. Bars can reopen under certain restrictions in norway, while finland has partially reopened libraries and restaurants. In greece, some hotels have re opened as the country prepares to ease travel restrictions in two weeks time. Portugal and italy have also seen a day of eased restrictions phase two of the de escalation of the three phases starts today, 70 of the country you can be inside cafe is, restaurants up to 40 capacity. You can go on the beach, two swimming pools, social distancing applies and you can even go to distancing applies and you can even gotoa distancing applies and you can even go to a wedding up to 100 people, if it is outside. 50 people inside. Not for madrid or barcelona, there still seem to be areas where they are taking a hit. Portugal as well you can go to cavities, bars and restau ra nts. Can go to cavities, bars and restaurants. Here are some pictures we have had from italy, one of the biggest attractions for italy, and in fact biggest attractions for italy, and infact 7. 5 biggest attractions for italy, and in fact 7. 5 Million People a year ago to the colosseum and they have opened the doors with temperature checks, compulsory face masks to go in. This is part of what brings a0 billion euros to the economy in italy and they are starting to get the life blood tourism attractions reopening this week. To india now where all shops, including salons and hairdressers are now allowed to reopen. Many Train Services have also resumed, but not without issues. Our reporter salman ravi is in delhi. More than 200 trains have started running from today so that the people who are unable to go out and go to their places, they could actually board the trains and you can see there is a lot of activity by the railway station. There is more 01 by the railway station. There is more or less like an airport because all restrictions at the airports are similarto all restrictions at the airports are similar to what is being practised here. Social distancing, only those passengers who have a confirmed ticket are allowed to enter. Some african nations have also eased certain restrictions. In cameroon schools have reopened. In south africa, a controversial alcohol ban has been lifted after sales were forbidden for two months. The measure has been credited for a big fall in Domestic Violence during lockdown. But responsible drinking is now allowed once more. From monday to thursday, alcohol can now be bought for consumption at home and take a look at this. There were long queues at Liquor Stores across the country, like this one injohannesberg. The bbcs reporter was there. At this johannesburg liquor store, the doors open at 9am and we have seen a steady stream of customers coming in. The store has put a number of safety regulations in place such as temperature checks, isolation, distancing, making sure there is a limited number of people inside a store. According to regulations, people can purchase liquor between 90 and two 5pm, mondays to thursdays, but authorities have urged people to stagger their purchases throughout the week to avoid large crowds as well as the risk of infection. We support a lot of families. It is not just about servicing our customers, it is also the families that are within our stores. The government says the ban on alcohol sales was done to alleviate pressure from the Public Health system and importantly there has been a reduction in alcohol related injuries in south africas hospitals, so the government will be monitoring the situation very carefully. One thing is for certain, they will be a few sore heads tomorrow morning. These restrictions are possible because countries have passed the peak of infections. Italy was the first country outside china to impose a Strict National lockdown. Deaths have dropped dramatically from the peak in early april, allowing the government to start to cautiously reopen some businesses and key attractions like the colloseum. The spanish governments decision to ease more restrictions is based on similar results. Authorities there recorded no new coronavirus deaths for the First Time Since march down from the 950 deaths reported at the peak of their outbreak in early april. But not all governments are waiting until cases subside before opening up. As economic and political pressures continue to build, leaders are easing lockdowns even as cases continue to rise. For instance in russia. President Vladimir Putin claims the pandemic has passed its peak but cases and deaths are still rising rapidly with authorities confirming more than 9,000 new cases on monday. Cases are still rising in moscow, which has seen the worst of russias outbreak, but on monday people were allowed out for exercise for the first time in nine weeks. Sarah rainsford met with some of them. Families like this when our three to wander again, as long as they are wearing face masks. They are still not entirely free though. The Mayors Office has assigned each block of flats in the cityjust three walks a week to limit the crowds. All of this opening up is happening even as moscow has detected more than 2000 new coronavirus cases every single day. But president putin has already rescheduled his victory parade for later this month and the kremlin is keen to hold a constitutional reform that that will allow him to stay on in power. The politicians here really wa nt in power. The politicians here really want to move on. There is a lot of relief he at finally being released out onto the streets again, but there is also merciless mockery at the complicated new rules. For example, you can only go for a run until 9am. And whilst you cannot hire you can hire one at the city bikes as long as you wear gloves, you cant set on a bench and all of the childrens play areas are still sealed off. The authorities are calling this an experiment. It is the cautious reawa kening calling this an experiment. It is the cautious reawakening of a city to see how the coronavirus response. Latin america is now the epicentre of the Global Pandemic and the situation in the regions worst hit country brazil is getting worse. Brazil has confirmed more than half a million cases and as you can see the number of new deaths is rising exponentially, with almost 1,000 deaths recorded on sunday, bringing the total to more than 29,000. The only countries with higher death tolls are the us, uk and italy. Last week the state governor talked about sao paulo is returning to some kind of normality, but how it works is the state is divided into regions and each region is given a colour or essays, so it goes from red, which is the strictest phase where the toughest problems are, where there are much more strict regulations on what people can do. Going up to blue, the weather is much more flexibility, but the idea being that severe states and regions can go through those phases and eventually come out the other end. Here in sao paulo we are in orange, meaning that places like shopping malls, Car Dealerships can start to look at reopening. That was our reporter dealing with the pandemic in brazil. Stay with us on outside source, more to another bone die and dry and sunny day today and there is some good news on the horizon for gardeners and growers. We are expecting a bit of rainfall, not an awful lot, that it is heading our way. On top of that, it is going to turn a bit cooler over the next few days. In the short term, no rain clouds across the uk, but there are changes in the north. Over the next few days, the warm air is replaced by a cold northerly wind and certainly by the time we get to thursday and friday those temperatures will be a lot lower. We a re friday those temperatures will be a lot lower. We are talking 12 17d. How much rental are we going to get . Very hit and miss. Initially, they will be some rain across scotland on tuesday, but after that it will be very hit and miss across the rest of the uk, so no widespread rainfall predicted at this stage. As i said, it is quiet on the weather front at the moment, clear skies by early on Tuesday Morning temperatures will be any range of 7 1ad, so relatively mild. He is tuesdays weather map, so big High Pressure across the atla ntic so big High Pressure across the atlantic stretching into western parts of europe and an awkward weather fronts stuck on the periphery of this High Pressure. That it does mean there will be some cloud across scotland during the course of tuesday, the possibility of some rainfall and you can see much fresher and into northern scotland. 12 degrees in stornoway, but still in the low 20s for glasgow and edinburgh. Come the middle part of the week, we have this low pressure and he weather front sitting on top of the uk. That does mean over the role it is going to be a much cloudier day, right across the board. You can see where the winds are coming from, straight at the north, so this is much fresher and establishing itself across the uk the possibility of some patchy rain, may be some showers that across the south or the south west of the country. Quite a bit cooler, only 11 degrees in aberdeen and may be just about 20 degrees in only 11 degrees in aberdeen and may bejust about 20 degrees in london. On thursday, those temperatures will be lower still, around 16 degrees in london and barely making double figures across the far north of the uk. And you can see that towards the end of the week we keep those temperatures in the teens, but predominately we are still talking about dry weather. This is outside source on bbc news for viewers in the uk and around the world. Im babita sharma. With the United States convulsed by protests over the death of george floyd, an independent autopsy makes its conclusions. The evidence is consistent with mechanical asphyxia as the because of death and homicide as a matter of depth. The matter of death. His death has sparked some of the worst racial and civil unrest in the us for generations and show no sign of easing. American corporates microsoft, netflix and citigroup are among big businesses adding their voices to the black lives Matter Movement. Welcome. American business has added its voice to the huge numbers of people protesting against the death of george floyd in minneapolis. The boss of apple, tim cook sent a memo to staff saying Racial Injustice was a pain deeply etched in the soul of our nation. He wrote we can have no society worth celebrating unless we can guarantee freedom from fear for every person who gives this country their love, labour and life. The chief Financial Officer at banking giant citigroup, mike corbat wrote this extraordinary blog post. It begins with i cant breathe, i cant breathe the words spoken by george floyd in his final moments. It continues saying we must speak out whenever we witness hatred, racism or injustice. And twitter changed its own profie picture to black in order to show respect and to show support for the protestors. It also added the blacklivesmatter hashtag to its bio. One company thats already sought to identify itself with protest movement is nike, which backed the athlete Colin Kapernick when he famously took a knee against the deaths of black men in Police Custody. Nike has released this advert music. That has received a lot of attention online. For more on how american businesses have reacted to the George Floyd Protests heres Michelle Fleury in new york. We have seen a broad response from the Business Community here in america, quite astonishing, from different sectors. On the retail side, you have big players like target, which is headquartered in minnesota. Coming out and recognising that this was a painful time for his community and outlining the steps it was taking to help both the Staff Members but also doubling down saying we are not walking away from our local community, mentioning specific neighbourhoods saying we will continue to have a presence here to try and create opportunity and jobs and i think that is one of the messages that has come out. Certainly if you look at some the African American leaders here in america, the ceo of merck, huge global drugmaker, talking about the difference between me and some of those in america is the opportunity. He talked about this opportunity he had growing up. And that is the emphasis and idea of what the Business Community thinks they can offer. Whether it is chances forjobs. There are other things that you have. Apple ceo tim cook coming out and talking about there are real problems in American Society at the moment and he refers to criminaljustice systems and talks about explaining that is why apple has decided to donate some money to the causes that he thinks will address some of that. What is interesting is how willing we are seeing American Companies speaking up about this because in the past, they have been somewhat anxious to get involved in controversial issues come in part because theyre worried about backlash they might face from consumers. That is certainly not the case if you look at the broad response we see at the moment. Concerns have been raised about the potential spread of coronavirus at the protests. Of course, all 50 states have started to reopen. More than 100,000 people have died with the virus across the us and scientists are warning america not to reopen too fast, and fear another 30,000 lives could be lost by august. Hilary anderson reports from vermont, on the spread of the virus. Good morning. Mary, a hairdresser in New Hampshire, has reopened her salon after two months of lockdown. But she is infuriated that she is still only allowed one customer at a time. So, this is the waiver i have to have everybody sign so you cannot sue me for coronavirus. Mary believes New Hampshire should be opened up completely. Some shops and salons are open here but there are still many restrictions. Nearby, in new york state, there have been 29,000 covid related deaths, but here in New Hampshire, where it is more rural, there have been less than 250. I do not have a lot of people that i know that have been sick. And if the numbers are like they are saying they are, they are obviously all in new york. But why new york did it get hit so hard . Is it because we have a lot of people who are not there legally . Is it because we have thousands of People Living on top of each other . Protesters in New Hampshires capital are furious, too. With a0 million americans now unemployed, they want their jobs back. It is 183,000 people out of work in New Hampshire out of a working population of 775,000. That is a huge price to pay for these decisions. Covid infections are decreasing in New Hampshire, but in 19 american states, they are not. Next door, in vermont, the numbers are now creeping back up. Im on my way right now to go and see a friend who is a dairy farmer. He lives with his mother who is elderly and i understand he is taking some pretty extreme precautions to try and protect her. Joel is taking no chances. He has built a plastic barrier down the middle of his sitting room to protect his 88 year old mother, shirley. How long are you planning on leaving this up and using this . Until we have a vaccine. That means all summer . Johnson johnson says their vaccine is going to be ready in eight months, that was a month ago. Eight months, oh my goodness President Trump has lent his backing to those protesting lockdown. In an election year, his election that it is trying to reopen as a powerful one, but the American Scientific Community is sounding the alarm. We have to remember that coming up too soon could set us back. Could mean a large resurgence of cases that damages not only lives, but also our economy. Scientists warn that 131,000 americans could be dead by august if their warnings are not heeded. Stay with us on oustide source, still to come new zealand and iceland race to become the first country to eliminate covid 19. Well hear their success stories. In england and wales people who have been shielding because they are clinically very vulnerable to coronavirus can now exercise and meet people from another household outdoors. Hywell griffith reports. After 11 weeks of shielding, for derek this is a day to savour. Emphysema means his lungs are vulnerable. He knows covid 19 could kill him, but being confined to his home in treorchy for so long has been hard. He says this is the end of his house arrest. Its relief. You have got to be sensible. You wont see me on any beaches or with any crowds. You have to use your sense. If youre not sensible youre asking for trouble. Youve got to keep your distance. From today, shielded patients in england and wales can go outdoors. And meet other people. The world theyre going back into has changed considerably but they are being assured it is safe. For around 2. 3 million patients in england and wales this is a huge step. But its one some are reluctant to take. The change in guidance came unexpectedly, with no clear reduction in the r number, or the rate at which the virus is reproducing. Health Charities Say theyre being inundated with questions which theyre finding difficult to answer. Does this mean its the end of shielding . Does this mean that my employer is going to now ask me to go back to work . I am not ready for that, im not confident with that. Also people are saying, is it safe . The beaches are crowded, the parks are crowded, the beauty spots, too. And in this new world thats developing is it now safe for me to go forward . The guidance on shielding in scotland and Northern Ireland hasnt changed. Across the uk there are calls for more tailored patient specific advice for what lies ahead for those most at risk. Hywell griffith, bbc news. This is outside source live from the bbc newsroom. An autopsy commissioned for the family of george floyd whose death in Police Custody has sparked protests and unrest across america, has found he died of asphyxiation due to pressure on his back and neck. And children have returned to school in england after more than two months in lockdown but with new social distancing rules. New zealand and iceland are on the brink of eliminating covid 19 with close to zero active cases in both countries. Both are geographically isolated, with small populations big advantages in fighting covid 19. However theyve taken very different strategies with similar success. Lets start in new zealand which has had over 1500 cases and 22 deaths. The Pacific Island nation of five Million People implemented one of the toughest lockdowns in the world shutting its borders, closing schools and workplaces. At its peak new zealand scored 96. 3 out of 100 in Oxford Universitys stringency index. 100 being the toughest response. The government led by prime Ministerjacinda Ardern has received global attention for her clear and decisive action. Heres one headline from the New York Times Jacinda Ardern sold a drastic lockdown with Straight Talk and mum jokes. The prime ministers message also focused on kidness spreading to road signs. Its a strategy that has worked. In the past ten days new zealand hasnt recorded any news cases. According to this study by new zealands oh targo university is on track to declare itself covid free in three weeks. More now from new zealand reporter perlina lau. New zealand currently has 1 active case of covid 19 remaining and there have been no new cases confirmed for the past ten days in a row. I think the success has been largely down to the government decision to go into full lockdown early on. New zealand had its first case confirmed at the end of february. And within a month, the country was in full lock down at level four. What this meant was only essential services were running running like hospitals, fancies, and supermarkets. Everything had to be close, including any takeaways or food delivery services. And people were urged to stay home. These rules are very clear and on tv and on airbreaks and radio and Online Platforms as well. So it was very clear as to what people were and were not allowed to do. New zealand also closed its borders and in any nationals returning home had to be put into military quarantine. This meant that the government could contain the cases, track any new ones and alert those who are affected and eliminate community transmissions, so this when this was achieved, we moved out of level four lockdown and into levels with fewer restrictions. We have now been in level 2 for just over two weeks. And the economy has more or less opened up again. Everything is back up and running. People are still practising social distancing, including businesses, so although it was a cautious and rather slow approach to begin with, it seems to have paid off. New zealands strategy isnt the only successful one. Iceland which had 1,800 cases and ten deaths went down a different track. It never imposed any lockdown, and instead implemented a strict policy of test, trace and isolate. Cafes were kept open, and only some businesses like night clubs, were shut. According to that Oxford University stringency test the nordic country scored only 53 out of 100 for its measures. Thats nearly half that of new zealand. But its a strategy Getting International recognition too. This new yorker article says it didnt just manage to flatten the curve its virtually eliminated it. Only a handful of active cases remain. Heres icelandic journalist beyani peteur. The first case of covid 19 was confirmed in iceland on the 28th of february, and the first case came with icelandic tourists coming from skiing resorts in italy and austria. From the very beginning, the main focus was on quarantine and rigorous testing. Iceland has now tested over 61,000 people for the virus. A higher proportion of the population than most other countries. Only a handful have tested positive in may. So there are now only two active cases here. And i believe there are two main factors that made this possible. For one, the small island population.
