He became leader in 2012. This is to tie in with the 20th Anniversary of the uk handing hong kong to china. Here are some of the pictures we have of the visit. This isntjust about the past, its about the present. Great care is being taken to make sure any pro democracy protestors dont get anywhere near mr xi. And hes re asserted the one country, two systems formula that has governed hong kong since the british left. Well get more on president xis visit in just a moment, but before we do, lets hear from the last governor of hong kong, the man in charge at the time of the handover in 1997. Thats him there with Prince Charles there. Hes been speaking to my colleague Babita Sharma who asked, if after 20 years the people of hong kong feel let down by britain . We have obligations to people in hong kong. Their obligations included in the treaty between britain and china which the chinese pretend doesnt involve us. We should be standing up for peoples writes in hong kong and for the system which has made hong kong so special. You saw the scenes unfold in 2014, what was your reaction to that and do you think the call for independence of the young generation is the right one . What i thought about those demonstrations in 2014 was what i guess most people thought and they were not manufactured from outside, this was spontaneous within hong kong. And was the most polite peaceful protest with a few odd exceptions. They were the most polite and civil demonstrations imaginable. It is crazy china has behaved in a way which treats them as enemies and turns them off the very notion of being closely related to the mainland. The one thing that they didnt know and i think it is a lwa ys they didnt know and i think it is always a problem with big demonstrations, they didnt realise the point at which they had won and that it wouldve insensible to stand back and ensure all the pressure was on the other side because they had w011 on the other side because they had won the moral high ground. And then what . You win the moral high ground and where do you go . It is easier to put more pressure on the government to have a proper and serious dialogue. 0ne to have a proper and serious dialogue. One interesting thing from the recent selection is the most popular candidate, twice as popular as the person who one who was the quy as the person who one who was the guy at the time he suggested there should be a dialogue with the stu d e nts should be a dialogue with the students who said absolutely no who one which is i guess pretty sad. Where i disagreed with the students andi where i disagreed with the students and i went and spoke to 800 of them at Hong Kong University when i was in hong kong last november, is over the campaign for democracy to morph into a the campaign for Democracy To Morph Intoa Campaign the campaign for democracy to morph into a campaign for independence. I think its Eyelid Support for democracy and it plays into the hands of the hardliners in beijing. What is the alternative than not they call for independent . The alternative is to give people a greater say over their own way of life. I feel hong greater say over their own way of life. Ifeel hong kong is still a very special place but what of the most important is the way the people have behaved in showing their commitment to pluralism and i think thatis commitment to pluralism and i think that is what will keep hong kong special. Helier cheung is reporter here in the bbc newsroom and was out hong kong correspondent for a time. I asked her what she made of president xis visit so far. It isa it is a carefully choreographed visit of course. Tomorrow he goes to a banquet and a variety show and then on saturday the big day he goes toa then on saturday the big day he goes to a Flag Raising Ceremony and a fireworks display. It is carefully choreographed but for everyday xi jinping is there a protest has been planned. Either people supporting the Pro Independence movements or the Pro Independence movements or the pro democracy movements. Plus much more pro democracy activists we re much more pro democracy activists were arrested after a sit in. I dont expect that to be in the Chinese Media much because that is not the story they want to tell, china wants to show this as a patriotic moment. You have watched them closer, hong kong has changed in the british was handed over to china, can you see marked differences . In some ways it is similar because they have the Common Law System which they inherited an english is still one of the official languages. 0n the other hand it has moved closer to Mainland China, for example more than 10 of the population is from Mainland China and a lot of tourists come there. There is very much the sense that the future and the continent depends oii the future and the continent depends on china. A lot of young people feel pessimistic because they worry and claim china interferes more and more and free speech is decreasing. Hong kong may become just another is chinese city. Before we finish if people want to hold protests, will there be allowed to . Protests are allowed in hong kong and mike Mainland China are sung as they register in advance with the police. Some places have been decided that they are far away from xi jinping which is not what the protesters want. We will have coverage of those ceremonious in the coming days. Time for sport. We begin with the cricket world cup. A high quality game early with sri lanka s australia. As you suggested it was an incredible game at bristol where australia beat sri lankan by eight wickets but the favourites, the defending champions needed a tournament record run chase to get there. Sri lanka scored the third highest score ever in Womens One Day International cricket and it was a big contribution to the total of 2579. If that was a big contribution to the total of 257 9. If that big school put the pressure on australia well it didnt show. Men planning made an unbeaten 152 and the defending champions chasing down their target with six overs to spare. 262 2 at the end. Down the road at taunton a co mforta ble Down The Road at taunton a comfortable win for india, the west indies batted first in that game and made 183 8. That was before there was an unbeaten century. India lost three wickets in chasing down their target with seven overs left in that game. Quickly talking about the federation s cup in russia before you tell me the results explain what it is because im not sure everybody follows it in that much detail. Fairly straightforward, eight teams involved in the federation s cup from All Over The World and many have one. The continental competitions, germany involved in the world champions in those eight teams have been whittled down. The tournament is basically the traditional warm up occasion for the following years traditional warm up occasion for the following yea rs world traditional warm up occasion for the following years world cup and that too of course is being held in russia. Germany will play chile in the final of the tournament and germany completed a 4 1win over mexico. Do they urge you to try to get a chance to look at the consolation goal. A thunderous strike from 30 yards out, the final is in Saint Petersburg in a stadium that cost 1 billion to build on sunday. I get this. That cost 1 billion to build on sunday. Iget this. Im that cost 1 billion to build on sunday. I get this. Im going to look at the goal and the stadium. Tour de france gets under way on saturday with a time trial in dusseldorf. A Party Atmosphere here in dusseldorf. We are on the banks of the rhine river and the fans are welcoming the riders, there has been an official presentation made and it is all ahead of The Grand Depart which is saturday. An individual time trial around the streets of dusseldorf, there is big, bright first, bikes and there is a great atmosphere as people look forward to celebrating the start of the tour de france. Away from the party there are serious issues, not least on the road between richie porte and chris froome, the tea favours. Also reputational issues and for the wider world of cycling given some of the issues. Lots to play for, all will fancy it, everybody looking forward to the start of the race on saturday. You heard richard talking about the two favourites three time winner chris froome and this man here australian richie porte. Yesterday we heard from chris froome today lets hear how richie porte is feeling ahead of the race. Of course the season has gone well so far but like we said this is the biggest race and the big girl, i think i have eight talented team mates to support the and a lot of guys behind the scenes as well, it isa of guys behind the scenes as well, it is a fantastic team. We will do oui it is a fantastic team. We will do our best and obviously that podium in paris was the goal and i think we have the right team and im ready to do my best to get there. Chris is obviously the one with the biggest target on his back, he is the defending champion and i think it will be between not only chris and i. Will be between not only chris and i, there are so many brilliant micro says so you cannotjust focus on the two guys. It is more than a two horse race. Yesterday we talked about the Australian Jockey michelle payne. Shed tested positive for a banned appetite suppressant. Shed already admitted the offence and 110w already admitted the offence and now shes banned for a month. Shes down to return to racing at ascot in august. She won the Melbourne Cup in 2015. Lots more sports news on the bbc news that if youd like access it. Next story we have covered times. Weve reported many times on the Cholera Outbreak in yemen its now affected more than Two Hundred Thousand people. The death toll has reached more than 1300 as a lack of clean Drinking Water and the ongoing civil war take their toll. The bbcs Faisal Ur Shade Irshaid has more. Cholera is a disease that affects the weakest in society. It takes grip on both the young and the elderly. As this outbreak spreads across yemen, its becoming clear this war torn country is unable to cope with another crisis. This hospital in the capital says its Receiving Hundreds of new cases every day, leaving wards full of patients and their desperate relatives. Translation this is my daughter. She contracted the disease five days ago. Without the hospital staff, my daughter would have died. We ask the world to provide us with more medicine. Translation my mother felt ill suddenly. Anyone with symptoms should not hesitate and get medical help before its too late. The situation in here is getting worse. The hospitals do not have any spare beds. Outside the hospital, tents have been set up to provide extra beds. But, with so many cases, people are treated where there is space. The Health Care System in yemen is already on the brink of collapse. Half the countrys hospitals and clinics have closed. Leaving places like this overwhelmed. Translation at the moment, we receive two to four new cases every minute. We are counting on international and regional humanitarian organisations to increase their support for yemen. The disease is spreading very rapidly and we treat patients all the time, but the centre lacks medicine and equipment. So why is it proving very difficult to help yemen . Dozens of aid agencies work in the country, but some complain the work is being slowed down by both sides in the war. On top of this, access to the affected areas is also difficult. Shortage of fuel and damaged roads mean that supplies often dont reach the people in need. Awareness of the Waterborne Disease is growing in the capital. But, in rural areas, where most of the cases occur, understanding is a problem. Over 200,000 people are now suspected of having cholera. And, without outside help, aid agencies warn that figure could more than double. If you want more background you can find that right now on the bbc news website. Stay with us on outside source still to come. This common pesticide harms both honeybees and wild bees thats according to the most extensive study to date. The family of the last person to die from injuries sustained in the Hillsborough Disaster have told the bbc theyre hugely disappointed that his death has been excluded from the newly announced manslaughter prosecution. Tony blands life support was removed four years after the 1989 football stadium tragedy. His father has been speaking exclusively to judith moritz. The chants have always been for the justice of 96, that number so much a pa rt justice of 96, that number so much a part of hillsborough. Now one stands apart. Tony bland died four years after the disaster. Severely brain damaged, his life support was withdrawn after his family fought for that right. I wouldnt want to wish it on anybody. Awful. Tonys father alan still remembers how painful it was. Does it feel as though tony died then or At Hillsborough . At hillsborough. It sounds cynical but we were left to pick up the pieces. Given that, how do you feel about the decision not to include him in the Manslaughter Case . Well really upset actually. Couldnt believe it, just couldnt believe it. Tonys death four years after hillsborough comes too late all fallen to be included in the charges. You get the feeling, i wouldnt say left out but the expectancy was we were all together going along and in this legal thing split us all up. Do you still feel pa rt split us all up. Do you still feel part of the 96 . Yes. We are delighted for the families. They fully deserved it. Will you watch with interest the unfolding . Without a doubt. Like i said over there for the families. You will continue to support them . Yes definitely. Allen ta kes support them . Yes definitely. Allen takes comfort from the Inquest Verdict that all 96 were unlawfully killed. That he says is justice for his son. We miss him. This is outside source live from the bbc newsroom. German leader Angela Merkel says the Paris Agreement on Climate Change is non negotiable in a thinly veiled attack on donald trump ahead of next weeks g20 summit. As we look ahead to the due 20 summit in hamburg. Really interesting story now on Second Hand Clothing imports into east africa. Kenya, uganda, rwanda, burundi, tanzania and south sudan had planned to ban these imports by 2019. Then it got complicated. Some of the countries reconsidered. The us said do this and it may affect trade benefits. But rwandas president has reiterated that its necessary to grow and establish our industries. This is made more complex still because more of the clothes come via donations. Nancy kacungira is our business reporter. I asked her which countries were still planning on implementing this ban. At the moment rwanda has the strongest commitment and they have said they will go ahead the matter whats threats are made. Kenny has backtracked on this and have pulled out completely and said they will not go ahead on the ban on second hand clothes. Uganda is yet to respond to the latest developments and so are other coaches. At the minute it isjust rwanda saying this. Why are the american subsets . Its interesting. This was brought up by a group and they have said since the decision has been made they have seen 5000 jobs in the private sector lost. Because of the higher taxes east african region and then they then they say they are soon 19,000 jobs at the non for Profit Sector that deals with used clothing. They said this will cause Economic Hardship in the us which is quite a shift. You wouldnt think this would be so important to them but it is. You reported this on a number of countries in east africa, do you agree on the analysis that all of these crows coming into the region are damaging the local industries . They are between a rock and a hard place at the moment, it does make sense for a country like Rwanda Will Uganda and tanzania because what they bring in from the us is much larger than what they export which is not the same for kenya for instance. You have 300 million worth of clothing imports coming into those three countries and what is going out this 43 million so they dont have a lot to lose in terms of what they are exporting to the United States that if they did revive local Manufacturing Industries then that would make huge difference for them. 80 of the closing Uganda Second Hand and i have been to factories and seen how they are struggling, they are relegated to school in Prison Uniform just because they cannot compete with the imports coming in at cheap prices. Im sure there are people watching now who have donated clothes feeling like they are doing a good thing helping people out from lower incomes, they might be surprised . Its really isnt that simple because there are a lot of things involved, even if you did band are used clothing there is a question of your industry well place enough to be able to fill the gap was back can they produce the Economies Of Scale things that are cheaper for lower Economies Of Scale things that are cheaperfor lower income Economies Of Scale things that are cheaper for lower Income Earners to buy. So it is not as simple as it seems, it is rather complicated that what is interesting is that there is a direct link between tax policy in east africa and jobs in the us. Thanks. New report from Rebecca Morelle its about how a common pesticide is damaging to bees around the world. Here it is. Our bees are in trouble. Around the world, these vital pollinators are vanishing. Now a major new study has revealed the role of pesticides called neonicotinoids. The chemicals were used extensively for oilseed rape until a temporary ban in europe in 2013. Neonicotinoids really change the way we use pesticides. Instead of spraying fields, seeds are coated with the chemicals and this protects the crops as they grow from insects. But now an experiment on a vast scale spanning 2000 hectares, an area the size of 3000 football pitches, has revealed that neonicotinoids are harming bees. The scientists were given special permission to use the banned chemicals at sites in the uk, hungary and germany. There was a need to undertake a large girl realistic Field Experiment to represent the effects on pollinating the real world. Ourfindings are cause for serious concern. We have shown for the first time negative effects on Neonicotinoids Seed Dressings on honeybees. We have also shown similar negative effects on while pollinators like bumblebees and solitary bees. This is important because many crops globally are insect pollinated, and without pollinators, we would struggle to produce some foods. For bumblebees, scientists found that exposure to the chemicals resulted in fewer queens, so fewer new heights. Hives. For honeybees, in two out of the three countries, hives were more likely to die off over the winter. These are neonicotinoids treated seeds. But some farmers say since the ban on their crops have been attacked by pests. In the uk, oilseed Rape Production has fallen by 20 . Its a useful crop. It can be turned into bio diesel. It creates vegetable oil, cold pressed. It is good for you on salad dressings. We always want to grow oilseed rape but without Neonicotinoids Technology in difficult years, it will be more challenging. Some conservationists say these findings should spell the end of the drug. A major manufacturers as they are convinced that pesticides are not bad for bees. The eu will soon decide whether to extend the ban. But with brexit for the uk, any decision may be short lived. And rebecca ends this edition thank you very much for watching. However, it is already a record breaking wet june however, it is already a record breaking wetjune in south east of scotland so things can only get better as we head towards july. This was edinburgh on thursday, the wind was only 12. By contrast where we did see a little sunshine in the south east corner of england, sussex and kent at temperatures up to 19. We should all get a bit warmer over the next few days and a bit drier. We still have the swells of cloud heading across much of europe actually. This is the heaviest Cloud Producing The Wettest weather and thunderstorms. Our low pressure is tending to fill a little bit and the rain is becoming a bit lighter and that Weather Funds will tra nsfer lighter and that Weather Funds will transfer South Eastwards having moved northwards. We are left with a lot of cloud to begin with on friday and there will be some patchy rain here and there and it is tending to drift towards england and wales, where we get some sunshine it should be warmer, there could be showers and it shouldnt be quite so called for scotland and Northern Ireland as it begins to dry out. The winds were to be quite strong but you see through the evening the wetter weather pushes further into england and wales. And that will push its way towards them a consonant allowing clearer skies to arrive in the north west and temperatures will bea the north west and temperatures will be a bit lower. The weekend though looks quite promising at least to begin with and will have early rain to begin with and then england and wales throughout the day, probably drier, a bit warmer with some sunshine this time, after a fine start we have seen this band of rain moving from the weather front. Not particularly active in the rain not heavy but it will transfer across the whole of the country overnight. A little bump of High Pressure and it is because pressure is high that the prospects look better. A lot of dry weather, some sunshine and pleasa ntly warm dry weather, some sunshine and pleasantly warm in the sunshine of the few blustery showers towards the north west. We could see some patchy Showery Rain Coming in as we had towards monday. This area of low pressure throwing ahead because cloud and a bit of rain and drizzle here and there. Mainly over Western Hills towards the south east should be drier and brighter and a bit warmer. Something a little cooler towards the rain in scotland. We are still stuck with this phone of patchy rain and drizzle. Temperatures mid teens towards the north and into the low 20s in the south. That train a very light and patchy because it is moving towards the area of High Pressure. A very fla bby the area of High Pressure. A very fla b by area the area of High Pressure. A very flabby area of High Pressure and we cant necessarily rely on it. As we head towards next week we will find the jet stream is strengthening. This strongerjet propagating across the atlantic. It means you tend to induce an area of High Pressure towards the south of the jet and pick up areas of low pressure on the jet are likely to run towards the uk. In the next week there will be rain at times that there is more movements, still some guitars of sunshine as well but the devil is really going to be in the detail. A lot of uncertainty between different Computer Models is even further ahead. Tonight at 10 after months of fighting, the Islamic State group is now battling for survival in both iraq and syria. We report from the front line in mosul, the iraqi city where the Global Caliphate was declared three years ago. This is the final push forward against the so called Islamic State. Its a gruelling advance here in the heat and the dust. This battle has dragged on for more than eight months. And in syria, where us forces are supporting the fight, is is under siege in the city of raqqa. But the question is what happens when the Caliphate Falls . Because, as we know from afghanistan and iraq, its always easier to get in, than it is to get out. Well have the very latest on the fight against is,
