Mexico, and went missing. How do you disappear 43 people . It helps if the government tasked with investigating that Disappearance is involved in carrying out the Disappearance. 43 were abducted, according to the attorney generals office, i by members of the Municipal Police in iguala. They were members of the drug cartels. I we had worked on a number of cases in mexico where Forensic Evidence had been tampered with and youre constantly asking yourself, what part of the evidence can you trust . The Mexican Government was officially stating that the Guerreros Unidos were simply a local gang and we knew that not to be the truth at all. Chanting the has sparked huge demonstrations in a country where 98 l of murders last year went unsolved. It has over 500 students and is one of a network of Boarding Schools that offer a free education. So, in september 2014, the students of ayotzinapa were getting ready to participate in a massive march that takes place every year in mexico city which commemorates the massacre of hundreds of students in mexico city on 0ctober2nd, 1968. Which was right before mexico was about to host the olympics and kind of position itself on the world stage as this emerging first world nation. Gunfire because theres no really reliable, inexpensive Public Transportation system, theres a tradition of commandeering buses to get you where you need to go. On september 26th, 2014, the students were planning to gather buses to take rural teachers College Students from all over the country to mexico city to participate in the march. They haphazardly pulled together a group of first year students about 80 to 90 of them, and aboard two already commandeered buses travelled, like, an hour and a half windy road from ayotzina pa towards iguala. Gunfire and shouting the students, once they are getting shot at, you know, aboard these different buses, in these different scenes, theyre calling reporters, theyre calling their classmates and their colleagues, and at the school, the students. Crowd terrorista terrorista translation we ask the federal government for the return of the missing students. We want them alive. They must be returned. Reporter for the desperate parents in the small town of iguala, the newsjust keeps getting worse. I i after the discovery of A Seriesi Of Mass Graves on the outskirts of the town, the state authorities have confirmed that there were at least 28 bodies inside. A week after the whole episode in iguala, guerrero, occurred, i received a phone call from some of the lawyers that were representing already the families of the missing students, and they told us that these graves have been found, that they were already being excavated by local forensic experts, um. And that they needed some technical advice. And they said, would you be. , you know,. Expert witnesses for the families . My name is mercedes doretti. Im a forensic anthropologist. Im a member of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team, and im currently the director for central and North America programmes. The Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team has worked in over 30 countries to identify Human Remains and unmarked graves. By the time we arrived to iguala. They took us directly to where they were digging. It was five oclock. The forensic people that were doing the exhumation of the graves, they were closing the site and said, theres nothing else. Weve already finished exhuming 28 remains and we are going to take these last ones to the morgue of iguala. The following days, we were interviewing the families to collect dental information, medical information, anything that can help us to compare it with the remains that we have. And we were taking Blood Samples and saliva samples from the relatives of the students. We were realising that it just didnt look like the students, the remains. They were from an older population, there were women among the remains, and the school didnt have women among the students. It was later confirmed by dna that they did not belong to the students. Two weeks after the Disappearances, the federal government steps in to take over the case from the guerrero state authorities. Two of the countrys most senior officials are put in charge attorney general Murillo Karam and tomas zeron, head of the criminal investigation agency. As the search for the students was progressing, over the hills of iguala, they started finding many places with clandestine graves. Other families approached us that have someone missing in their family that have disappeared around the same time, but they were not part of the students. That was the first time we started knowing that there were actually hundreds of people that have disappeared, you know, in iguala over the past few years. And it wasjust. It wasjust horrifying, yeah. It wasjust hard to believe how organised it was and how everybody knew that those spots were places you would not go. Its like an invisible, or not so invisible presence, that is constantly there. You entered into territories that are. You know, controlled by organised crime. In mexico, The War On Drugs starts in 2006. At that time, the Military Budget and the federal Police Budgets increased enormously. There is this massive just influx of cash, both from the National Resources and internationally. So theyre buying military hardware, buying helicopters, funding training programmes, all to go into fighting The War On Drugs. The drug war and the drug economy itself are kind of like these conjoined twins, right . Any time you feed one, you feed them both. And so all they did was provoke intense armed responses and fracturing of groups that proliferated all manner of violence in mexico. And so, by 2010, Ciudad Juarez had become the murder capital of the world. And in the south, guerrero would become the top poppy producing region in the country by the late 2000s. The cocula dump is the local landfill site. Its 20km from iguala, where the 43 students went missing. The Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team is authorised by federal officials to conduct an examination of the scene. We arrived to the cocula garbage dump on october 27th, 2014. We were surrounded by, like, 100 people. A lot of security forces. The attorney general was there, Murillo Karam, and he said, we have some people in custody. They told us that the 43 students were in the hands of organised crime. They were taken to the cocula garbage dump. They said some of them arrived dead. Some of them were killed right there on the upper part of the garbage dump, and then they dropped the bodies to the end of the garbage dump, burning their remains during the whole night there. It sounded very strange, particularly if it was done during one night, two people, or three, dealing with 43 sets of remains. We have worked before in cases in mexico where people have been detained and tortured and confessed crimes that they have actually not committed. For us it was logical to doubt whatever they were telling us and try to think about, is there another explanation of this . The first thing we did was to divide the area intoa grid. We were Working Square by square, Collecting Thousands of tiny fragments of bone. Human remains. All of them were affected by heat or by direct fire, so the chances of getting dna were going to be very, very slim very difficult. The fact that every fragment was burned was very puzzling. You would expect the majority of them will be burned, but some other ones maybe half burned, half not, some maybe not burned at all. Thats what you typically find on an open fire. This looks more like coming from a controlled fire than an open one. From different angles, we were analysing the evidence, and it wasjust not matching the official story. Hello. I think weve seen the last of the widespread cold, frosty days. On friday, there was plenty of blue sky and wintry sunshine for many of us, as was the picture in dudley. But things are changing now. Weve got milder air moving in in time for the weekend and also much windier weather. In fact, the met office have named storm isha. Thats on the way, particularly late sunday into monday bringing severe gales and disruption to travel, power perhaps is likely. But lets have a look at saturday. First off, this band of rain will affect central portions of the uk, perhaps southern scotland, Northern England into wales as well. Therell be some sunshine across much of the midlands, South East England and east anglia and some brighter skies across the north east of scotland too. Temperatures around 6 or 7 in the east, but were back into double figures towards the west ten degrees for the likes of belfast and glasgow, for instance. Later on saturday, heavier rain moves in from the west. The winds are going to pick up as well. That system sweeps its way eastwards into the early hours of sunday, followed by more showers. It isnt going to be cold and frosty as we start sunday morning. Weve got too much wind and the showers around from the word go. But lets take a look at sunday in a bit more detail because here is storm isha developing in the atlantic, sweeping its way in. Just look at all these isobars across the uk between the warm front and the cold front. Thats where were going to see really strong gusts, perhaps 70 or 80 miles an hour. So for sunday, some rain initially for Northern Ireland sweeping into other Western Parts of britain. There could be a little bit of snow just across the very highest ground for scotland. Still chilly air in the far north of scotland, but much milder, 12 or 13. But the real emphasis on sunday, particularly later, is going to be the strength of the wind. Weve got Amber Warnings for storm isha across Northern Ireland, southern scotland, Northern England, Western Parts of england and wales and the south east as well. Gusts 70, 80 miles an hour, enough to cause some significant disruption. Big waves, i think, around the coast with this storm system as well. Now heading on into monday, weve still got the brisk winds at first. They should ease a little bit through the day, but it is going to be another really windy day with heavy showers rattling in across the north and the west. Should be mostly dry, i think later on in the south, and the east, and temperatures somewhere between about six to 12 degrees for this stage not quite as mild as sunday. But things are looking unsettled through the week ahead, often pretty windy, Showery Rain Around at times those temperatures much milder than they have been. Bye bye. Live from washington.
