Weve already finished exhuming 28 remains and we are going to take these last ones to the morgue of iguala. The following days, we were interviewing the families to collect dental information, medical information, anything that can help us to compare it with the remains that we have. And we were taking Blood Samples and saliva samples from the relatives of the students. We were realising that it just didnt look like the students, the remains. They were from an older population, there were women among the remains, and the school didnt have women among the students. It was later confirmed by dna that they did not belong to the students. Two weeks after the Disappearances, the federal government steps in to take over the case from the guerrero state authorities. Two of the countrys most senior officials are put in charge attorney general Murillo Karam and tomas zeron, head of the criminal investigation agency. As the search for the students was progressing, over the hills of iguala, they started finding many places with clandestine graves. Other families approached us that have someone missing in their family that have disappeared around the same time, but they were not part of the students. That was the first time we started knowing that there were actually hundreds of people that have disappeared, you know, in iguala over the past few years. And it wasjust. It wasjust horrifying, yeah. It wasjust hard to believe how organised it was and how everybody knew that those spots were places you would not go. Its like an invisible, or not so invisible presence, that is constantly there. You entered into territories that are. You know, controlled by organised crime. In mexico, The War On Drugs starts in 2006. And so all they did was provoke intense armed responses and fracturing of groups that proliferated all manner of violence in mexico. Some of them were killed right there on the upper part of the garbage dump, and then they dropped the bodies to the end of the garbage dump, burning their remains during the whole night there. It sounded very strange, particularly if it was done during one night, two people, or three, dealing with 43 sets of remains. We have worked before in cases in mexico where people have been detained and tortured and confessed crimes that they have actually not committed. For us it was logical to doubt whatever they were telling us and try to think about, is there another explanation of this . The first thing we did was to divide the area intoa grid. All of them were affected by heat or by direct fire, so the chances of getting dna were going to be very, very slim very difficult. The fact that every fragment was burned was very puzzling.
