Chilly particularly around eastern scotla nd chilly particularly around eastern who did we see and who did scotland and eastern areas of we not give the money to . England with temperatures still around 4 six. The best of the dry well, we saw twitter. We did not give the money to twitter, did we . Weather and sunshine further west. Nope because we thought nahhh. Deeper into the week ahead, you can laughter. Yeah, you found a start up see from the temperatures, it is that was making electric cars going to stay on the chilly side, it and remember, this is a time wont be dry for everyone with when electric motors really did just mean milk floats wintry showers around, particularly and golf buggies. Later on in the week, we could see a what was the name of the start up that you found . Bit of snow working on for some of its a small start up. It was called tesla and they they invited us along for me us, particularly over the high ground but no sign of any warmer to try literally the third weather. Car that they made. And we took it for a spin. Time now for this the roadster has a good pedigree its ultralight carbon fibre body is designed by lotus, based on the elise and thanks to new battery weeks travel show. Technology, it can go three times as far as the car wally built. The first hundred of these electric supercars roll silently off the production lets be honest, it hasnt been the best year for travel. But we have line in october. Seen places, albeit virtually, that will take your breath away. Welcome but what a success did you have any idea back then of the success that to our look back at 2020. What a tesla may have . I do you know what . I did have an inkling, and i tell you why i did because of the performance. Tesla always went out right year it has been. And it all started from the get go to say this you know, were not talking so well. Milk floats or golf carts. We are talking serious performance cars, and they captured the imagination of the public. Dan, thank you so much lucy took a trip to a simulated forjoining us. Martian outpost in the caves it has been wonderful to see you. Cheering and applause. Of northern spain. In argentina, mike went after dan, lj rich, who has to the worlds second biggest wetland and took a dunking. Done a ton of stuff for us oh and were away over the years. Laughs. Her fave moment the time and i went underwater to swim she went on a vr roller coaster with sharks in the maldives. While on a real roller coaster. Theyre just so close seriously, dont ask. But shes been spending lockdown, well, as only lj could. Hello, lara, hello spen, hello but then, disaster struck. Click team and hello audience lockdowns, border closures ive been immersed in al music and holiday cancellations creation, among other things. I got really into style for the foreseeable future, transfer, where you mix leaving some of us two songs together. Still out of pocket. See, i can do it without computers, so how would an ai do . I programmed ai queen to sing let it go from frozen and ai beatles to sing call me maybe. Heres my number. But back in those early days so call me maybe. In march, simplyjust finding a way its hard to look back home was the main problem facing many. Right at you baby. My situation is, im, im stranded. So so hang on. Virgin cancelled my flight yesterday due to leave at 6. 25pm from miami this is the beatles doing and i was told the day before that carly rae jepsen, yeah . Of the cancellation. The advice weve been given has the algorithm works by sampling been quite confusing. Tiny slices of audio i mean, im obviously not from everything the beatles a fluent italian speaker ever made and then picks out so thats partly my fault, things it thinks fits, but in general, the advice given has and thats based on training changed every few days and it varies models, and it takes nine hours to make just one minute of music. By region quite a lot. Now its not possible to travel to the neighbouring so i was heavily supervising islands or into the city the model every four seconds into the early hours unless you have a reason to do so. We also have curfew in place of the morning. Oh, my god. So it is also an here between 10pm and 5am. Exercise in endurance. Oh, lj, thats brilliant and also, it is just so you. We just want to get back to friends and family. Ai and music how much ive got a new grandson whos more you could that be . Going to be six months old tomorrow. I havent seen him cheering and applause. For six weeks now. Im being told that i can book an alternative flight but i dont know if thats with the same provider. Can i go with a Different Airline like ba . Will i be reimbursed for doing that . It is unsettling, there is so much happening everywhere. It is really easy to get well, here at tokyo university, caught up in the panic researchers have moved the ideas of Science Fiction when you speak to people. One step closer towards reality. This is richard taylor, the man who started click, reporting from japan. A camera projects an image of the background onto a coat i would love to get home, yeah. Now, as you can imagine, trying to make a weekly travel programme in this year has it has been said that been extremely tricky. Once you join click, but one of the things that has made you never really leave. And that means that a couple it a lot easier is having an amazing of the newest members of our team have actually been travel show family spread quite literally across the globe. With us for quite a while. So we decided to catch up lets cross to them now. With the team and find out how please welcome omar mehtab and paul carter. 2020 has been for them. Hello, how are you . Hey. Hello hows it going, everyone . Paul, youve picked something from all the way back in 2018 . Thats right, yeah. Me and omar went to switzerland my people my travel show people to check out some new tech lets have a chat about this year because its been around firefighting. We went to check out a device an odd year for travel, to help firefighters detect hasnt it, for travel heat in a burning building show presenters. And also something i was very so each of you, rajan, pleased about a firefighting train. Why dont you start off first . Now, switzerland may not be the first place that comes tell us what your year has been to mind when you think of fire. Like, highs and lows. But its surprisingly its been really weird. Advanced when it comes i think ive travelled less to firefighting tech. For example, its the only than ive ever travelled country in europe to since childhood this year and that is weird. Have a firefighting train. This cabin is actually so i have missed it. Pressurised, so in the event i think we have all of a fire, this can be missed it, havent we . Operated as a safe breathing its almost like weve environment. Dramatic music. Electronic music. Had our wings clipped. In the beginning, it was a little bit 0k, well ill take a break but after a few months when you realise that travels so much more i was over there with him. Than just seeing places, its how i found happiness i was there, working my socks in my life at least. Off, and then i turned around thats how i felt alive and ijust see him grinning so that was taken away. I was allowed to travel to the eu from ear to ear, just loving it, being on that train. In the beginning ofjuly. I went and ive been it was, like, the most wholesome thing ever. Travelling since. Brilliant travel is really different and one lets turn to omar. Cheering and applause. Of the big things i realised is i always thought i loved animals and mountains and waterfalls but when you take away faces, you realise that people and faces are kind of really so, sam battle is a musician and youtuber who loves important to travel. Tinkering with old tech, so hes got a whole lot of speakers, you know, i tell you what i found really game boys, he also had, strange, i dont know like, a furby organ. He got, like, 30 of them and he whether you guys have done it, was playing music with it. The few times that i have it was really. Weird. Managed to travel overseas, that sounds demonic oh, it is demonic. Is how empty the airports are. This is basically 48 game boys christa and lucy, what do you think, and it basically sounds its so weird isnt it . Like an orchestra. For instance. So, im in dubai at the moment and ijust filmed the latest episode of travel show. Machines play one droning this is the First International sound that crescendos. But after a quick modification, trip we have done, ive the keyboard doesntjust play done for eight months. Game boys anymore. Ah and just being in the airport, i was very close to that i dont know what i was omar squeals. Expecting but i definitely look out wasnt expecting that. Just eerie silence, couldnt did you squeal there, omar . Sit in a lot of places and obviously i know, were all used to experiencing lockdown, that kind of thing, but it was really surreal, the entire experience. Just the fact i got on a plane and i was able to step off and get into the heat. I was going to say omar, like mike said, meeting people, that was some some the smells, the food the buzz, squealing going on. I really thrive off that kind i mean, yeah, i did squeal. Of thing and this has the reason i squealed is because just before reignited my passion for travelling we turned the cameras on, and made me realise how much we were testing out i hate my makeshift the flamethrower and it went desk in my living room. So big that it singed his hair, carmen, what about you . And so i was genuinely fearful. Whats it been like like, ok lets calm down a little bit, you know . Chuckles. So its amazing to think, really, isnt it, 15 years ago, youtube was already a thing out there in japan . But the concept that that people could carve out huge careers online just didnt seem real at the time, did it . No, it didnt and, you know, i mean, weve gone from people well, fortunately, japan is pretty making online videos big so i travelled quite and showing them, you know, a lot in japan this year, around the world to now, you know, peoples careers more so than any other year. Getting so big i mean, weve but its been great got Floyd Mayweather junior from that perspective. Ive spent time with my family. Fighting a youtuber soon but ive missed my and thats its based off family overseas, right . The back of his fame and ive had so many that hes put up online. Trips cancelled. So you can actually build ive had my chile trip a real, proper career out cancelled three times. I was meant to go to singapore of this, and its a couple of weeks go. Only going up and up. And then a week before seems like theres no end. Totally. Omar, paul, thank you so much they cancelled we had a green lane cheering and applause. Thank you. In singapore where i could go next up isjen copestake without quarantining jen, welcome and overnight, that was rescinded. Jen, good to see you. So, the trip was off. Jen joined click back in 2013 and has been super busy over and what about you, christa . Youre a seasoned traveller. The last year especially, whats it been like . Covering health tech pieces have you managed to find any highs during the pandemic. Shes been all over the world for the show as well to israel, las vegas, china. Or pluses in this crazy year . How has it all been for you, jen . Its been absolutely amazing and its so lovely well, i was lucky enough, to see everybody today. My favourite times i think i think it was august, on the show, though, i got to go to germany and not only have been in china. Theres been some incredible got to track down some technology that ive seen there, and one of the most wild boar in berlin, Amazing Things was actually but we went down and got a little getting to play sport with robots. Taste of the oktoberfest whoa laughs. That wasnt which was great because it was it gave us an opportunity to see really what a beer festival is like just for locals because the millions of International Visitors didnt show up because the event wasnt on in 2020. The robot is designed to be but i think that for me this year, as much like a human has meant for me, that really more player as possible. Its eyes are the hd cameras than anything is that for the first at the back of the court. Time in my life, i havent been able these computers send prediction data on where the shuttlecock to go home to australia. Will fall back to the and for people who robot via bluetooth. Carmen, you live injapan. Is there any more news on that badminton robot . I know you grew up in yeah, theyre still australia and you no doubt theyre all taking part still have family there in competitions and theres the distance has never Different Companies and universities across china seemed widerfor me. Who are developing these robots i just miss my family and theyre winning competitions. And id love to go home. Itsjen copestake, everybody cheering and applause. So, the moment australia nice to see you opens its borders, i will be booking the plane ticket, welcome to the Aletsch Glacier in the swiss alps. I promise you that. This has been a blast we have made it well and talking about booking your plane past our 20th birthday and through the toughest ticket once borders open, time i think any of us what do you guys reckon . Have ever seen. What are your hopes for the future . Lara, thank you. Youre, like, the best co host i couldve wished for. Lara lewington, everybody. Lara lewington. Thanks, everyone, for coming cheering and applause. Whats going to happen in 2021 in regards to travel . Ithink numberone, for all the people who work this is a short taste of our show. In the travel industry around the world, especially countries you can get a slightly fuller where theyre dependent on tourism, its gonna be a massive relief. Flavour on iplayer. I hope that you have a restful i mean, they can get some work, and peaceful time off, for gods sake, and that is really, if you can. Heres to 2021. Really vital to them. Thanks for watching number two, i dont know about you, and we will see you soon. Bye cheering and applause. But i have been moderating some conferences and theres this whole notion that are people going to reset . Are they going to think differently about travel . Is there going to be more conscious travel . Are we going to think about sustainability more in the sense of not the environment but what we actually do with the time that we spend . Theres certainly a time to perhaps value the trip more. Yes. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast the one thing i think with Nina Warhurst and charlie stayt. Our headlines today pressure grows to shut more schools. A Teaching Union demands a two week about non stop is in 2021, closures of all primaries and secondaries in england. A new warning over hospitals. A senior doctor tells breakfast that if we do choose to travel nhs staff across the uk should and we can travel for however well make that happen, prepare for a spike a vaccination orjust basic risk in covid admissions. Tolerance theres going to be 50 years since the ibrox a once in a lifetime opportunity disaster in which 66 football fans to go see machu picchu, maybe go see mount fuji, were killed, rangers and celtic go see wherever you can go will today come together to pay tribute to the victims. The angkor temples in cambodia with no tourists a new year and new title hopes when is that going to happen again . For Manchester United. I think theres an opportunity if people do choose theyre now level on points to travel this coming year. With the champions liverpool at the top of the premier league, after beating aston villa last night. Ok, down, and up he got millions of us up i think people now are going to have one big holiday next year. And about during lockdown if anything, they are just going to planjust one big holiday. In 2020, but what hasjoe wicks theyre not gonna nip over to paris got planned for 2021 . For the weekend, you know . Well speak to him just before 9 00. Theres going to be a lot of effort and time put into it, and you may even have to consult with a travel agent all chuckle. As opposed to buying it yourself online. Its like weve gone back 30 years. Good morning. Our cold spell of and rajan, the grand master weather is going to continue for of travel, come on, tell us, what does the future hold, sir . Quite a while yet. Today it is a i would say savour every second, frosty start with a risk of icy value every second, because i think we dojust rush through stuff stretches this morning. It is a day and dont really appreciate everything. Dont undervalue how much of sunshine and showers but those the travel experience can showers will again be wintry at change eve ryones life. That was absolutely amazing. It is not often. Times, with further snowfall, hang on a minute, ade, especially in northern scotland. Im going tojump in here ill have more a bit later on. Because we have been talking about our experiences this year its saturday the 2nd january. And hopes for the next year our top story but we havent asked you the countrys largest Teaching Union is calling for all schools what do you think is coming up . In england to close for two weeks, what is a bit of hope we can take from you, ade . After the government ordered all primaries in london to remain do you know what . Shut when the new term begins. Pupils in some boroughs in the capital were due to return on monday. You guys have summed up a lot the government says the citywide closures were a last resort due of this, but i think for me, to rising Coronavirus Infections. Heres our education ive learnt that we shouldnt take this for granted. Correspondent, dan johnson. I think for years, travel has been keeping children in school has so easy for everybody. Always been the priority, and i like the idea of next with closures and more home year being that one, rather than going for lots of small learning a last resort. Trips and weekends, we look for that one big life changing experiential the government was forced to make trip, you know . That move, announcing on wednesday that Primary Schools in most parts of london and some other areas in the south east couldnt have pupils back next week because of increasing case numbers. Because you dont know the london boroughs not included when this can happen again. You know, we dont know when it can challenge that patchwork approach, happen again and as someone who, questioning the criteria travel has changed my life so much, and pointing out that some children yeah, i want to hold cross boroughs to go to school. Onto every second. So, i think for me next year, last night the education secretary announced a change, its all about that big which means all of londons primary life changing trip. Bring on 2021 and travel show schools will now stay closed. Will be bigger, stronger and better lovely chatting to you all the absolute right place take care. For all children to be is in school, but we need to really focus merry christmas, everyone. On making school safe and ensuring that we get a Clear Strategy in place to support our most merry christmas, guys. Disadvantaged children, merry christmas. Whom we are extremely worried about that attainment gap which has grown massively for them, as this pandemic continues to rage. Its not the first decision so, that is it for this week. The department of education has had to reverse, but ministers say over the new year, youll get they are responding to fast moving the chance to see some great situations and changing trips from recent times, including mikes mind blowing journey through kazakhstan and lucys magical visit to rwanda. Local conditions. But in the meantime, dont forget you can follow us on social media in all the usual he stressed the priority has always places twitter, been to keep schools facebook and instagram. Open where possible. But until next time, have a happy, healthy and safe next couple of weeks, and well see you in the new year, but now more than a million primary when, hopefully, we can get back on the road doing School Children face at least what we love the most. A fortnight learning from home. But for now, from all that means frustration for many of the travel show family, 00 31 25,389 4294966103 13 29,430 all over the world, its goodbye parents and some teachers, too. Its completely unacceptable that we keep having these u turns, these last minute decisions, where parents dont know where they are, where teachers and schools dont know where they are. The other thing we say is that we dont see this happening in Northern Ireland or wales or scotland, we dont see these u turns, these various reversals in policy. And that makes for a much calmer environment for both parents and educational professionals. The changes announced earlier this week in england mean secondary School Pupils in england taking exams will go back onjanuary11, while others will learn remotely until at least the 18th. Most Primary Schools will still open as normal on monday, apart from those in the virus hotspots of london and the south east. They will stay closed to all but children of key workers and vulnerable families. In Northern Ireland, the return will be delayed by a week or more. Online learning is planned for pupils in wales untiljanuary 11, and in scotland classrooms will not fill up until at least the middle of the month. Officials cant rule out more schools being disrupted, or these closures going beyond a fortnight. Some are already calling for other schools to be included. The government says it will do all it can to keep children in the classroom. Dan johnson, bbc news. Lets get more from our Political Correspondent helen catt whos in our london newsroom. Good morning, helen. Isuppose there area number of good morning, helen. Isuppose there are a number of sides to this. You look at the arguments and the decisions and it is confusing for some parents, and most importantly of all students themselves, and conventional argument from government is that they are dealing with changing situation, they are reacting to the new variant, the infection rates in different parts of the country. Yes, that is exactly how they would explain this. So, the criticism, there has been criticism this morning, certainly about the timing of this, that this is a last minute change, paul whiteman, the general secretary of the School Leaders Union Committee naht, says the government 5 damaging Public Confidence with a confusing and last minute measure. Labour shadow secretary kate green said it was yet another u turn causing chaos to pa rents another u turn causing chaos to parents just days before the start of term. As you said, what the government would argue here is that it really doesnt want to close schools. It has been cleared through the pandemic that it believes closing schools for a long time is to damaging the childrens life chancesin to damaging the childrens life chances in the long run. So it would likely say, you know, it wants to try to keep them open for as long as possible. And we have seen it take a very ha rd possible. And we have seen it take a very hard line stance on this, just before christmas it deployed legal action against one london borough who wanted to shut their schools early. It has been very, very strong on trying to keep schools open. Certainly they will be pressure for the government not to go with these calls for trying to have a more wired closure of schools across the country. I think there will be quite a lot of resistance in government to that as a move, because the government line has always been that it just believes it government line has always been that itjust believes it is too damaging for children if they are out of school for a long time. Helen, for the moment, thank you. A number of hospitals are now facing a worse situation than at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic last year. Thats according to the president of the Royal College of physicians. Professor Andrew Goddard says nhs staff are braced for a difficult few months as a result of the new variant of the virus. Our Health Reporter jim reed has more. The pressure on hospitals in parts of the country shows no sign of easing off. Staff are tired, some wards are at limit of their capacity. All hospitals that havent had the big pressures that theyve had in the south east and london and south wales should expect that its going to come their way. This new variant is definitely more infectious, and its spreading across the whole of the country. It seems very likely that were going to see more and more cases wherever people work in the uk, and we need to be prepared for that. Another 53,285 virus cases were recorded across the uk yesterday. 616 people lost their lives to the virus. In london, the Nightingale Hospital is now being ready for action. Its thought it will soon start to take non Covid Patients, or those recovering from the disease. Vaccinations are seen as the way out of this crisis. A million doses of the Pfizer Biontech jab have been delivered, but gps are being asked to postpone a second booster shot, giving it after three months rather than three weeks, to roll it out more quickly. Senior doctors say one dose is still effective, but for some, any delay to that booster is concerning. Darren, a pharmacy technician, suffers from a serious breathing condition, and had his first vaccine dose on boxing day. It would be devastating, another three months, when youre so close, and you think, oh you know, life. And if thats put off another three months, its a huge impact. The government says tens of millions of doses of at least two covid vaccines will be available by the spring. Getting those to the people who need them the most will be crucial as the nhs fights the winter wave of this pandemic. Rescue teams in norway say theyre preparing to step up their search for nine people missing after a landslide near the capital oslo on wednesday. One body was recovered on friday, but the operation is being hampered by dangerously unstable ground. 31 houses and apartments were swallowed up by the landslide, which happened when the clay soil became saturated with water and collapsed. Fans of doctor who will know that actors Bradley Walsh and tosin cole have stepped down from their roles in the hit tv series. Yes, that was revealed in the new years day special but now its been announced that a new companion will be joining Jodie Whittaker when the show returns later this year, and he is a familiar face to comedy fans. Lets take a look at who it is. Here, your horoscope for the year ahead. Aries. Surprises lie in store this year. The colour blue will be important, and the letter d. Youre lucky numbers 13. Be prepared for action. And whatever hurdles come your way, just remember its not the end of the world. There we go, of course the clue was in the opening shot, wasnt it . A ferry crossing the mersey. Exciting stuff. Theres a warning this morning that the situation in a number of hospitals is now worse than at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic last year. It comes as the nhs prepares for the next phase of the vaccination programme, with the oxford jab set to be rolled out from monday. We can speak now to gp dr ellie cannon. Very good morning. Exciting news about rolling out venue vaccine. What will it mean for you your patients . It is very exciting. We have already been running a very successful vaccination hub from my practice and other neighbouring practices, so we have vaccinated over 1000 patients. That was on the weekend before christmas, which is great. Now we have to move to the next stage, so we will have more vaccines coming this week. If we get the oxford vaccine coming this week, which we have been promised, it means we can actually meet actually reach our housebound patients, which has been incredibly important, we havent been able to do that with the pfizer vaccination because of the way it needs to be stored. So we have plans this week to go to our local Nursing Homes and also to our patients who are frail, who do not leave the house. Thats brilliant, isnt it . To be able to get out of those who are stuck at home. What has it been like in the surgery, going from seeing hardly any patients to having 1000 through the doors in quick succession . Well, we have set up what is known as a vaccination hub, locally, which people will probably be familiar with now. We are a group of gp practices who are working to gather from one practice, as you say, lots and lots of patience, which is not something we have been used to because we have had very controlled numbers over the last few months. People are in and out very quickly, very pleased to be there, obviously. And it has been a very well oiled machine. Presumably, though, you have rolled out this vaccine and then had to deliver the for many patients that they are not going to getting the second dose of vaccine as quickly as they anticipated, how much of a challenge has not been . That really a huge challenge, as i said, we have vaccinated 1000 patients and obviously that is a lot of manpower to get in touch with patients. We do use systems like text messaging and emailing, but our most vulnerable patients who have had the vaccine often have only had a landline, and need to be fine. It is very time consuming to let people know, and also, it takes time to explain to people, people are understandably disappointed as you show that shows just now in your vt. So it is taking time, i do believe it is the right Public Health decision, but we give the first is a vaccination to as many people as possible. What are you saying to patients when they come in for the first dose . Because some people assume that when they have done that, they can resume life as it was, but that is not the case, is it . It is really not the case, no. And if you look at the data on the vaccinations, you do really need 2 three weeks to build up immunity, so people have to carry on very much following the guidelines in their area, following the rules, washing your hands and maintaining space, because we need to see if you develop immunity. People do understand now that that messages getting out there, having vaccination is the first step but it does take a few to build that immunity. So that is an Important Message, isnt it, but patients remember that even when they get the firstjump. Remember that even when they get the first jump. You are remember that even when they get the firstjump. You are in north london at the moment. We know that there is more virulent strain the virus, troubled them in the lockdown in november, how concerned are you about this new strain . Trebled. It is very concerning, this new strain. It is incredibly infectious. We are seeing that with the numbers of people going into hospital now. Tha nkfully of people going into hospital now. Thankfully it doesnt appear to be more fatal than the strain that we had previously, but when you have a large numbers of people who are infected, even if the mortality rate stays the same, then of course the death rate is going to go up and up and up, simply because we have more and up, simply because we have more and more people who are infected. So it is very concerning stop it was noticeable in the general practice last week, when i was speaking to patients, we were speaking to a far greater number of people who have covid compared to the last couple of months. How does that affect the way we are behaving . We are in tier 4, you wont hear four, where you are only allowed to meet with another individual outdoors. Is there evidence that shows the strain can transmit outdoors and we must be careful about only sticking to those groups of two . There hasnt been any evidence yet about out for transmission and the new strain but what we do know from the strain that we had before is that outdoor transmission really for any virus actually is really quite difficult. Those respiratory droplets are incredibly fragile and once youve got that space between people and youre outside, outdoor transmission is likely to stay low. So the behavioural things that we all trying to do, keeping apart, only meeting with another person outside in tier 4, is still incredibly, incredibly important. As with anything with covid throughout 2020, this is a rolling news story and things do change and evolve as weve seen in the last few weeks and weve seen in the last few weeks and we just have to keep a very, very close eye. Finally, the politics of this issue aside, from a health perspective, should we believe should we be relieved that schools are closing . Possibly from a viral transmission perspective but from the point of view of childrens education and health and equality is in terms of education and health, it is very, very worrying to close schools, it is not something that should be taken lightly and we have to appreciate how much children have suffered in the last nine to ten months in terms of the pandemic, in terms of their education, and we really have to try and protect that Going Forward into 2021. Thank you for joining Going Forward into 2021. Thank you forjoining us this morning. I hope you continue to successfully rollout the vaccine was a bit sounds like its going really well. Heres chris with a look at this mornings weather. How is the weather looking for the weekend, chris . In a word, charlie, cold. We still have the northerly winds with us, feeding in quite a few showers actually, some of them are falling as snow aside from that, sharp frost around. Temperatures down to 7, that is in the Scottish Borders Dumfries And Galloway, i stand corrected. Across the Scottish Borders, we have snow showers working into Northern England. These clu m ps of working into Northern England. These clumps of showers, things will get icy here, if not pretty snowy over the next couple of hours. Probably the next couple of hours. Probably the only place we will see snow showers, they will coming quite frequently for northern scotland. Rain and sleet and may be snow over the highest ground. The showers working to South West England and they become more widespread into Northern England later on today and some of those with snow over the pennines. Brightening up across the south west of england. Overnight tonight, showers will continue to come in. Widespread. Again a bit of snow mixed in over the hills. Cold with a fairly widespread frost. The lowest temperatures for the north west of the uk although we will see temperatures 7 minus eight celsius here. For sunday, well, the wind has changed direction it will still be cold. The wind is coming in more from the northerly north easterly and it will bring showers in particularfor eastern scotla nd showers in particularfor eastern scotland and eastern areas of england. Rain probably more likely around coastal areas but come inland, we will see some sleet or snow mixed in, particularly over some of the higher hills and those showers will push on towards wales later in the day. As of the sunshine tomorrow, wales and Northern Ireland and parts of scotland should see some right or sunny spells breaking through. John is that if we look at the forecast well into next week, still have the same area of russia still have the same area of russia still directing the winds from europe. Still have those north easterly is around and they will continue to bring cloud around with showers. They probably will be a line of focus showers in the week ahead coming into parts of yorkshire. We could see some snow building and across the east pennine areas and that is one to watch i suspect in the week ahead. It stays chilly with temperatures around 4 six. Maybe lengthily lengthy areas of rain working its way into kent as well. It will stay cold in the week ahead. Temperatures below par. Certainly wont be a dry week. They will be snow around, perhaps more especially towards the end of the week. Wings could turn unsettled but certainly staying on the cold side, temperatures for most of us around 3 five stop back to you both. Thank you very much, chris. The weekly clap for carers was a show of gratitude for nhs workers. But one father and son wanted to do more to honour those healthcare staff working on the front line who lost their lives to coronavirus. Paul and james gilley started crowdfunding to produce a special statue to be given to as many bereaved families of nhs staff as possible, as fi lamdin has been finding out. These are just some of the nhs staff across the uk who have lost their lives to covid 19. Nurses, doctors, co nsulta nts, lives to covid 19. Nurses, doctors, consultants, porters and healthcare assistants. 181 nhs and 131 social ca re assistants. 181 nhs and 131 social care workers deaths have sadly been reported involving covid 19. I know the thoughts of the whole house with theirfamilies the thoughts of the whole house with their families and friends. What we realised when boris made that statement was that nobody was saying thank you to those families that had lost their lives going to war to keep us safe so yes, we were clapping and saying thank you to the nhs and all those key workers for keeping the world moving but we wanted to do something to say thank you to those families that had lost their loved ones. Paul and james gilley, a father and son team, watch their business collapse overnight as their business collapse overnight as the pandemic hit. Was almost within that day, our work, the pandemic hit. Was almost within that day, ourwork, our the pandemic hit. Was almost within that day, our work, our income, decided tojust dry that day, our work, our income, decided to just dry up and stop. They just. They wanted decided to just dry up and stop. Theyjust. They wanted to get give something. The idea of a statue came up and we met a woman who makes beautiful things and she sent us this picture and we were like oh, my goodness, that is just the most beautiful thing. I think that probably made us cry at that time. With the statue is completed, they started delivering the angels to some of the families of the nhs workers who died. In memory ofjoan, a nurse working in merseyside. Simon, a radiologist in cumbria. Heffernan, a hospital receptionist in warrington and jan, a Mental Health expert in cambridge. There was a part of me that thought this isjen. She was a part of me that thought this is jen. She is was a part of me that thought this isjen. She is invincible. She is immortal, she is not going to die, shes not going to leave us, she is going to beat this. Jenny and jen met in hospital, working in the same ward. I love the sunny days, i love the waterfalls. She had a real desire to help people. S she had a way of making people feel good about themselves. Together they lived with their two daughters but both mums came very their two daughters but both mums came very sick with covid and were rushed to hospital and intensive care. I said to jen, please, please, fight this, fight it with everything youve got. And she said dont worry. You listen to me, i want you to be really strong and i want you to be really strong and i want you to be really strong and i want you to fight too. And were going to leave this place together. I love you but i have to go now. And thats the last time i spoke to her. Jen died of the 17th of april. James is delivering the 27th angel and it is forjenny and her girls. This is an angel in memory ofjen. On behalf of the nature and for everything that she has done for the nhs. Element thank you so much. That she has done for the nhs. Element thank you so muchm that she has done for the nhs. Element thank you so much. It felt amazing. It somehow felt like it was wrecking arising the loss and also how much she gave, directly nice the loss of someone great. It was really lovely, really lovely. There back as as always, we thank the families of the people who have shared those stories. A reminder that we go through the numbers day after day and every number is a family like that so thank you for sharing with us. And we will cross two for the sport. Looking to the new year with real hope and optimism. If you had said that united fans a weeks ago, they wouldnt have agreed. What a difference, a couple of months can make, from struggling in 15th in november, to now, the heady heights, of being level on points with liverpool, at the top of the premier league, after beating aston villa 2 1 at old trafford. Antony martial was back in the starting line up and he stole through to put united ahead, late in the first half. Villa equalised but the ever reliable Bruno Fernandez scored the winner, from the penalty spot thats his 11th league goal of the season. Uniteds match against liverpool in two weeks time could be a defining moment. Were happy with what were doing at the moment, i think we have shown, we have improved a lot in a year, if you go back a year, you go back to arsenal a week, last new years day, that was a disappointing day. I think weve improved immensely. And well be better, as well, because were getting fitter and fitter and stronger and stronger. West ham manager david moyes said winning, at everton for the first time, since he left the club seven year tomas sou chek scored the only goal of the game, late on at goodison park. Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has asked fans not to visit ibrox today, as they take on celtic in the lunch time kick off. Its the 50th anniversary of the disaster, in which 66 people lost their lives during a crush at the stadium. Gerrard said the club would still be paying their respects and he knew it was a poignant day. But in light of the pandemic, he wanted fans to stay safe at home. Newcastles 100 start to the English Premiership Rugby Union season is over after they lost by 29 points to 17 at bristol. The home side went ahead in the first minute of the match and never lost their lead. That took them above newcastle, into second place in the table behind exeter. An upset in the darts, as Dave Chizzy Chisnall, has reached the semi finals of the world darts championship for the first time and he got there with a stunning victory over the world number one michael van gerwen. Chisnall had never managed to beat him, in 27 attempts before this, but he thrashed him 5 0 at alexandra palace, to earn a meeting with another former champion gary anderson. Now britains olympic gold medallist, luke campbell, takes on, one of boxings, big social media stars, ryan garcia, in dallas, texas tonight. The Mexican American, has built up his reputation, through his videos more than his fights. As alex gulra jani reports. The power of social media. While ryan garcia is famed online for videos like these, his performances like this inside the ring that is gaining the young Mexican American fear some rest fearsome reputation. I knock somebody out, i posted, time is it 140 because that person is going to show to that person is going to show to that person and that person. If a certain rider with no fighter gets no followers, nobody is going to hear about it. On instagram alone he has 7. 8 million followers, more than world heavyweight champion. Still some work to do to catch up on anthonyjoshua some work to do to catch up on Anthony Joshua and some work to do to catch up on anthonyjoshua and Floyd Mayweather. People dont want to see technique, they dont care to see my hands up, they dont care to see my hands up, they dont care about any of that, they dont care about any of that, they want to see speed or power. People that commit your hands not up, youreyes are people that commit your hands not up, your eyes are closed, guess what . It is adding more comments, more things to talk about, it is all a show, i do it on purpose. One man not drawn in about all this is his opponent. Lou campbell won olympic gold in london 2012 but his ambition to wina gold in london 2012 but his ambition to win a professional world title has so far come up short. Luke campbell. For me, every fight is a world title fight. I have to win. I am preparing for my hardest fight yet, im preparing for the best ryan garcia, a well levelled opponent. When it is all done and said in this sport, i want people to know my name, he boxed all the best, he beat them and what a fighter he was. That will undoubtedly come with victory in texas. Apparently the 12 most marketable star in the world in any sport is ryan garcia. It is not just it is notjust his social media videos but he actually has some boxing talent that have hoped to prove tonight. It was interesting what he was saying. It got it wasnt necessarily. Maybe people didnt know too much about his fights but his videos. It was his way of dealing with a difficult childhood, panic attacks. He has used boxing to turn his life around. Fantastic. Hello, this is breakfast with Nina Warhurst and charlie stayt. For the last year weve been following the journey of Rugby League Star rob burrow who was diagnosed with motorneurone disease. In a special documentary he talks to sally nugent about his fight against the disease and how his rugby career has prepared him for the challenge. Seagulls squawk. It is gorgeous, though. Who needs grand canary or lanzarote . The number of people, parents and that, they always used to say, hes good, that rob, but hes never going to make it because hes not big enough. Theyjust know to make it because hes not big enough. They just know that to make it because hes not big enough. Theyjust know that if he got the ball and he set off running, they want going to catch him. Robjust always rob just always treated me like a princess, you know, if there was anybody i was going to spend the re st of anybody i was going to spend the rest of my time with it was going to be rob. Very lucky to be involved in it, you know, this is the fairytale ending. It is a challenge that has been laid down now, he will take it on invited to undertake it like he has his whole career. I am still transitioned to coming to terms with having a disease where there is no cure, you know, i have to many years to live, im not giving until my last breath. 17 glorious seasons with leeds rhinos, and robert burrow, the smallest man on the pitch, became a giant of the game. Rob burrow. Two years giant of the game. Rob burrow. Two yea rs into giant of the game. Rob burrow. Two years into a retirement that promised sunny holidays and more time with the family he was diagnosed with motor neuron disease. There is no treatment. There is no cure. Rob decided to use his rugby tea m cure. Rob decided to use his rugby team to show everyone what life is like with mnd. Then rob and his family had to cope with a global pandemic. So, i have not left the house for over two weeks now, and i like being at home with my family. Spending some quiet time with them. Rob and lindsay, childhood sweetheart, have been together for 20 years, almost. I was been together for 20 years, almost. Iwasa been together for 20 years, almost. I was a bit shy at first, i stood him off the first time so we never actually went on the date the first time. You stood him up yeah then we got in touch again through mutual friends and we went to the pictures and that was it, really. That was age 15. And we been together ever since. It was at our player of the yeardinner, since. It was at our player of the year dinner, rob got up to present the Academy Player of the year award, and straightaway i knew wasnt right. Like i say, its probably already been said about him, a real competitor, doesnt like losing. Well win at any cost. His family noticed hell he was slurring his speech, and i didnt really think that much of it at the time. Im not sure whether it was me or curve that got to him. I said, you dont seem like your well for some he said, no, im 0k. You dont seem like your well for some he said, no, im ok. I said, youre not doing something youre not, are you . He said, no, im 0k, youre not doing something youre not, are you . He said, no, im ok, i got an appointment with the doctor. The specialist appointment, i think the concern for all of us was that rob played the game like he did, he took quite a few head injuries, and that was certainly something that played in my mind, we need to get this checked. It got to about 7 30pm andl this checked. It got to about 7 30pm and i hadnt heard from rob. I dropped him a text and then received a bombshell back. Theyjust said, um, its not good news. We are sorry to tell you that. Sorry. And then you ask the question of, how long . And you are told, you know, a year to two years. You know, one of the first things that rob said to me was, thank god its me and not the kids, and thats what he was bothered about. At the moment, the challenges communicating is the biggest, its an effort for me to, you know, just hold a conversation. To play the sport that we have, we have had to be brave, but you spend a bit of time around lindsay and you know what brave is. Shes effectively his karen l. Carer now. Rob is going to get to a stage where hes probably not going to be able to walk, hes not going to be able to walk, hes not going to be able to walk, hes not going to be able to talk. You know, just to have his independence taken away from him. Thats when our friendship started, rob would have been told that i would have been 14. Hes good, good man. I have perhaps didnt realise some of the facts. How quickly it can grab hold of people. So of course, what you go through. Its really, really sad. Sorry. When rob was diagnosed, you know, we were told, that is basically it. Its all about Palliative Care now, there is no treatment, there is no cure. You know, this has never been about rob. This is about raising awareness for other people that have this, you know, this horrible, horrible disease. Now, that are quite a few newspapers talking about this this morning, the england leeds rhinos rob League Player robert burrow. He has revealed that he has motor neuron disease. He has been speaking about the shock of this diagnosis and of course the inspiration hes been taking. You know, im really positive, on the journey. It must be tough on your wife . Yeah, it is, thats the emotional side. You know, i suppose you have good days and bad days, but, yeah. To be in that room when he was clearly choked, upset, as you would a expect expect. A couple of deep breaths. All right. Sorry. Dont be. The family. Come on, jackson lets go weve got to dairy milk eggs, yay we dont know an awful lot about motor neuron disease, and what we do know isnt good. And im worried for him. Im worried for lindsay. Hes got to daughters and young jackson. You know, a young family. You start to think about what the future holds for him. Ours was 21. Yay covid restrictions stopped rob coming to hospital. This was his first visit for months. You are losing your ability to speak, to swallow, to move, to breathe, and you are trapped in this body. It is very cruel. And you are totally aware of what is happening to you. Its heartbreaking. I view it as a privilege and an honour, how many jobs are there in which strangers will welcome you into their lives, when they are at their most vulnerable and fragile. Robber wont. Robber wont. You know, robberwont. You know, he robber wont. You know, he will fight this disease for as long as he can, and fight this disease for as long as he can, and i think he doesnt want anything medical, the less intervention be better, i think he sees it as a sign of weakness and a sign of giving into mnd. Telling somebody that they have a life limiting condition is difficult, and on top of it, when you say that you do not have a cure, i think that is really tough. When i tell them i have symptom control medications, have some quality of life supporting measures, you know, to offer, but not having that cure, not being able to take away the disease, is difficult. It is very difficult. If you would like to have a drink and if it is all right with you, could i possiblyjust a little feel of throat muscles . Because it is Muscle Movement that protects your airway when you are swallowing, because if not things could go into your chest bend down your food pipe. So youve got some Nice Movement there. It is all brisk. Patients would come to this clinic and would see myself and a neurologist, they would see a specialist nurse, they would see a specialist nurse, they would get some breathing tests done. They would see occupational therapists, physiotherapists, a speech and language therapist, and a Palliative Care consultant. So that i quite Palliative Care consultant. So that iquitea Palliative Care consultant. So that i quite a few people who will actually provide that. But the beauty of this is that than the patients dont have to make multiple visits to the hospitals, and on one day, we can all put our Heads Together and create a care plan for the patient. I think one stop shop is quite a nice description for it. The switches on the side, that is the on button. So give it a try. And the on button. So give it a try. And the good thing about that is, you just need a tiny space to move around in it. The conversations are difficult, they are difficult for patients, they are difficult for families, and they are difficult with the medical and nursing and other professionals who care for these patients. You just want to do things for the kids, and the realisation that you cant go and kick a ball with jackson, or you cant change jacksons nappy or do things like that, that is how he has been thinking, and he was always such a hands on data. He was was taking the kids to playgroups and things. And thatis kids to playgroups and things. And that is tough for you, it . Yeah. Seeing him today was difficult, because he has lost a lot of weight. And his speech has deteriorated a bit. But his spirit is great. Plans for a dream family holiday in florida were abandoned. Still, time together anywhere is precious. Look at that boy, hes so good isnt he great the training that hes had, at all levels, but particularly at the professional level, you train a lot more the psychological parts of the game. And i think prepared him. But how anybody can prepare for Something Like mnd, i dont think anybody knows. I couldnt watch by. Anybody knows. I couldnt watch rugby. No. After. I mean, ive always loved rugby, but then, i did, i blamed it, is it all the knocks hes had . They reckon there is 5 10 chance it can be inherited, so you are looking back over your family, it can be inherited, so you are looking back over yourfamily, is anybody come on both sides, and no, no. When you go through, and is it rugby . Is it ourfault no. When you go through, and is it rugby . Is it our fault that he played . Being proud of everything that all his family has done, but what rob has achieved, but. I neverfelt as proud as i do now. Applause. Geoff isnt alone. Teammates, opponents and stars of other sports have rallied to fund raise in the hope the disease can be cured. Nagging at the back of everyones mind, sport can be particularly affected by mnd. Inspirational world cup captain, a superstar of the game, died from mnd in 2017, he was 45. A hero for ranges fans, he was 43 when he died. Still, the toll grows. Scottish international doddie weir was diagnosed in 2017. Ever since, he has continued the fight against mnd. In 2018, footballer Stephen Darby was diagnosed, together with rob, they are now a team, facing an opponent they cannot outrun. When i saw robs diagnosis, i was devastated for him but i was angry as well because i knew the processes and that he would have to go through, rob would have questions for the dock as but i knew at the same time they wouldnt have any a nswe rs same time they wouldnt have any a nswers for same time they wouldnt have any answers for them or they would say no cure. Ive seen all of you three show tremendous grit and determination. You think that is something . It is like a game. Trying to beat mnd. The only way we will win is the collective effort. Just Work Together and us being involved in teamwork understand it, the bigger the team, the better the result. Rob, i know one of the things you want to do is you want your children to remember how you speak. You think when your voice is gone, youve taken practical steps about that, havent you . The mnd s association, obviously the area affecting me as my voice and mostly around the throat. So im pretty keen, unfortunately, i cant really speak. This is nothing like my voice was but hopefully through lots of interviews and audio, i can tell the kids off and still do that. And tell them i love them. This is your chance. Any voice, this is your time to be scottish. Gentlemen, thank you very much indeed, thank you. Thank you. Do you want to drink now . Come on, have a little slap of that. Slurp. Doddie weir said, for guys like you and i, rob, weve got this by like you and i, rob, weve got this rugby family, this support network, but what about the postman . What about the bricklayer . What about the quy about the bricklayer . What about the guy who works in a factory five days a week . I think for the pair of them, to be able to raise awareness, raise much needed funds, get support for people who dont have that network there. There was a group of us network there. There was a group of us that took on the three peaks which is three big hills, mountains, whatever you want to call them. Big things. Element whenever you are around rob, there is a lot of laughter, jokes, usually at my expense or some other big bloke because what he lacks in size, he more than made up for in his wit and his sharpness. It is important people know. There were people doing fundraising left, right and centre. It was amazing, so many people just wa nted it was amazing, so many people just wanted to show their support. I thought right, i dont want to miss an opportunity to ticking over. Yeah, give it a bash. An opportunity to ticking over. Yeah, give ita bash. High an opportunity to ticking over. Yeah, give it a bash. High five. Well done, awesome. Were determined to do another ten hours. We were struggling in the last bits, 20 minutes after we were like right, were going to have to run this now. Underten were going to have to run this now. Under ten hours. Just as we were coming downhill, i saw macy and mayair and so it was great to see them. It was the emotional time for both of us. Applause. It makes you reflect on your own career and the injuries you sustained and it is something i think about and very quickly answer. Would i change anything . Do i enjoy seeing people i love and i care about suffer in this way . I hate it, i hate seeing rob suffer. Everybody does it look at the head injuries we get now, the concussions. It is a question that needs to be asked. Get now, the concussions. It is a question that needs to be askedm there a link between sport and mnd . We dont know. Is there a link between certain supplements and certain foods quest to mark why do some professional sports people get it and others dont . We dont have an answerto it and others dont . We dont have an answer to that as yet. Announcer please welcome rob burrow really high profile case we have some really high profile cases now in by. Really high profile cases now in rugby. I understand why the question is posed and why its asked, but thatis is posed and why its asked, but that is why we need so much research. Moderna rob barrow entered the field, five minutes to go. Research. Moderna rob barrow entered the field, five minutes to golj wouldnt let people put people i wouldnt let people put people i wouldnt let people put people i wouldnt let this put people off sport. So many young people want to make careers and i think that should continue. We washed it on the tv, it gave me goose bumps, watching it. Right from the start, robs ambition has been to support other people like him with mnd. How has mnd affected you . I was diagnosed with a form of mnd called progressive Muscular Atrophy in 2018. Like yourself, rob, you must think, what the hell have i done to to deserve this . It was so inspiring seeing how he drove out live in such a positive manner. It is great to see. Health and happiness. Take care, bye bye. Is this where it all started . It is, yeah. You know, from being on this pitch and then ending up in wembley is remarkable. I hope other parents have gone through a similarjourney that we went through but not when it got to the diagnosis. You remember the field, you remember robert when he was little, sidestepping, literally, and going over. Remember it like it was yesterday and it brings back a lot of memories. Robs grandad was his number one fan. He wouldnt miss a match, would he, jeff . Here in all weather, stood there, cheering him on, and he was so proud. Do you have a look back and think the punishing, the talladega of the game, did that the brutality of the game. You have to put it down to bad luck. These people, women, that never played the sport, theyve got it. There is men that have never played the sport. Oh theyll find a cure. I want rob to be there when they find it. We wouldnt want people to have any doubt about playing rugby. The socialising, that isjust as important, it is an important part of life. If you dont have teammates, you cant get lonely. Is the motor neuron disease family, weve got to be strong, got to get the message out and get the governments and everybody to just pay more attention to this. Have a great birthday, love harder and mama and grandma and grandad. There is hope, real hope and when he got diagnosed, we read somewhere that they reckon 2020 is going to be a breakthrough year. Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birth day dear daddy, happy birthday to you. Hello. Come on, fella. Youve got your phone with you . Good lad. Cant wait to hear this. Hi, sal. Over the last 12 months, you have raised awareness, you have raised funds, i hope you feel immensely proud of everything youve done so far. Im very grateful for the awareness that bbc breakfast are giving to mnd. Been an absolute privilege to spend time with you and the family and everybody connected with you. You are very everybody connected with you. You are very much living with mnd. Everybody connected with you. You are very much living with mndi everybody connected with you. You are very much living with mnd. I am determined to beat this disease and it starts with having a strong mindset. You certainly have that, rob. You are an inspiration to us all. I think we all want to say to you how proud we are to be involved with you and the family and how grateful we are to get to spend this time with you. We love working with you and we love coming here and spending time with you so thank you very, very, very much from the bottom of my heart. This is the best card daddy, this is the best card. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Nina Warhurst and charlie stayt. Our headlines today pressure grows to shut more schools. A Teaching Union demands a two week closures of all primaries and secondaries in england. A new warning over hospitals. A senior doctor tells breakfast that nhs staff across the uk should prepare for a spike in covid admissions. 50 years since the ibrox disaster in which 66 football fans were killed, rangers and celtic will today come together to pay tribute to the victims. One year on from australias devastating wildfires, we hear how peoples lives and the landscape are on the road to recovery. Getting stronger and stronger, thats the new year forecast from the Manchester United manager, after they went level on points with the champions liverpool, at the top of the premier league. Ready . Down and up. Down and up explode. Do 30 seconds. He got millions of us up and about during lockdown in 2020, but what has joe wicks got planned for 2021 . Well speak to him just before nine. Good morning. Our cold spell of weather is going to continue for quite a while yet. Today, its a frosty start with a risk of icy stretches this morning. Its a day of sunshine and showers, but those showers again will be wintry at times with further snowfall particularly in northern scotland. Ill have more a bit later on. Its saturday, the 2nd january. Good morning. Our top story the countrys largest Teaching Union is calling for all schools in england to close for two weeks, after the government ordered all primaries in london to remain shut when the new term begins. Pupils in some boroughs in the capital were due to return on monday. The government says the city wide closures were a last resort due to rising Coronavirus Infections. Heres our education correspondent, dan johnson. Keeping children in school has always been the priority, with closures and more Home Learning a last resort. The government was forced to make that move, announcing on wednesday that Primary Schools in most parts of london and some other areas in the south east couldnt have pupils back next week because of increasing case numbers. The london boroughs not included challenge that patchwork approach, questioning the criteria and pointing out that some children cross boroughs to go to school. Last night the education secretary announced a change, which means all of londons Primary Schools will now stay closed. The absolute right place for all children to be is in school, but we need to really focus on making school safe and ensuring that we get a Clear Strategy in place to support our most disadvantaged children, whom we are extremely worried about that attainment gap which has grown massively for them, as this pandemic continues to rage. Its not the first decision the department for education has had to reverse, but ministers say they are responding to fast moving situations and changing local conditions. They stressed the priority has always been to keep schools open where possible. But now more than a Million Primary School children face at least a fortnight learning from home. That means frustration for many parents and some teachers, too. Its completely unacceptable that we keep having these u turns, these last minute decisions, where parents dont know where they are, where teachers and school staff dont know where they are. The other thing we say is that we dont see this happening in Northern Ireland or wales or scotland, we dont see these u turns, these various reversals in policy. And that makes for a much calmer environment for both parents and educational professionals. The changes announced earlier this week in england mean secondary School Pupils taking exams will go back on january 11, while others will learn remotely until at least the 18th. Lets get more from our Political Correspondent, helen catt, whos in our london newsroom. Helen, how much pressure is on the education secretary over schools . This isnt the first last minute decision from the education secretary. There has been a welcome at this move by council leaders, by the mayor of london, but a lot of criticism about the timing of it. The general secretary and ht saying it was damaging Public Confidence with a confusing and last minute approach. Labour criticising it, saying another government u turn creating chaos for parents. The government has maintained throughout the pandemic that closing schools, as you had in the report, is a last resort. It believes that schools are safe environments, that children are better off than it is too damaging for the life chances, their education to be out of the classroom for any length of time. Before christmas, we saw them deploying a ha rd christmas, we saw them deploying a hard line against this against greenwich council, who tried to close early, it involves legal action to force it to backtrack. This comes after talks with local authorities in london, i think there will be resistance and pressure on the government internally not to expand this across the country because of that commitment to keeping schools open. This also suggests other local authorities have not been asking for it. I think thatis have not been asking for it. I think that is going to be some sort of resista nce that is going to be some sort of resistance to extending that more widely. It is leading to pressure from other groups, you have the federation of Small Businesses saying if you have 75 of the population under tearful restrictions, more schools closing, we are heading towards an almost National Lockdown in all but name and the government needs to provide more support. Helen, thank you. A number of hospitals are now facing a worse situation than at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic last year thats according to the president of the Royal College of physicians. It seems very likely that were going to see more and more cases wherever people work in the uk, and we need to be prepared to stop another another 53,285 virus cases were recorded across the uk yesterday. Huge. The government says tens of millions of doses of at least two covid vaccines will be available by the spring. Getting those to the people who need them most will be crucial as the nhs fights the winter wave of this pandemic. Jim reed, bbc news. Its a great casting. Actors who go into doctor who, they are stepping into cultural history. The time is ten minutes past eight. A last resort thats how the education secretary has described the decision to keep all of londons Primary Schools closed this week. Pupils in some boroughs were due to return on monday despite an increasing number of coronavirus cases but yesterday it was decided a city wide closure would be necessary. Joining us now is tom prestwich, head teacher of jubilee Primary School in south london, which had been due to reopen this week. Good morning. I dont suppose its been a relaxing christmas breakfor you. When did you get this news . Pretty much the same time as eve ryo ne pretty much the same time as everyone else, on twitter. Yesterday evening, at about 5 30pm, i think i picked it up. We had just sent a letter out to parents saying that we we re letter out to parents saying that we were still opening next week, and then after that the story broke pretty much straightaway. There was speculation until that moment that it was going to happen, you left it to the very last minute to reassure pa rents to the very last minute to reassure parents that school would be open. Yes, frankly, the last few days since they announced that some bowlers would be open and some would be closed, it seemed pretty hard to fathom. I was half expecting some kind of change in policy but by the time it gets to 5pm on a bank holiday friday, you kind of think that she might, they might have stuck with a decision. Although i am glad they have change this one. You are glad they did this happen, but presumably not about the timing. How has it felt reacting to decisions like this as 2020 played out . It is not you have to move to Remote Learning, he was still teaching children who are vulnerable and there is of key workers, so two jobs at the same time you are still teaching. That is the really frustrating thing, we appreciate it isa frustrating thing, we appreciate it is a fast moving situation, the government must be getting Different Health advice all the time, but schools do need to plan and we will be opening for quite a few pupils next week. We will need to register staff, one to deliver to vulnerable pupils, pupils with needs, and another to deliver high quality Online Learning. This takes time and this decision could have been made two weeks ago. What has been the reaction of pa rents . What has been the reaction of parents . It is a massive adjustment, particularly of parents of primary age kids, working from home. The expense of our parents has been really positive make the experience. I think a lot of parents are quite understanding of the situation, im sure thats not the same in every school. Frankly of the last nights decision i have no way of knowing because we got the at 530 pm ona of knowing because we got the at 530 pm on a friday. We will have to see next week. Parents are concerned, we have parents consent because they are worried about their Childrens Health and their families health, and you have people who are worried about lost learning time. It is a difficult situation as it is for staff in schools. How concerned are you about the loss of learning time, particularly for Vulnerable Children where it is not as easy to engage with parents . It is definitely an issue. I would say the more notice schools have about these changes and decisions, the more easy it is to work out who needs to still come into the building and plan to make sure that eve ryo ne building and plan to make sure that everyone has technology they need and understands what they need to be doing to access at home. There will be lots of learning time through this pandemic, there will be a loss of learning time. Ourfirst duty is the care of safety of staff and students. Schools will close these gaps. The less chaotic it is, these gaps. The less chaotic it is, the more easier it will be to do that. Absolutely. Tom prestwich, thank you. Good luck this week. I know how hard it is, i take my hat off to all of you. It is a worthwhilejob off to all of you. It is a worthwhile job whether it is online or face to face so we will cope. Thank you very much. Thank you. Lets pick up on some of those issues. The countrys largest Teaching Union is holding an emergency meeting today about schools re opening. Were joined now by mary bousted joint general secretary of the National Education union. Good morning, thank you for your time. The emergency meeting, what is the thought . Looking at the Current Situation and looking at the chaos which is engulfing our schools. That head teacher said it all, really. Been told that half past five on twitter that the school would close next week, having spent the whole christmas preparing for school to be open and for safety. Teachers now having to completely, over this we can, change their teaching plans, they were going to be teaching in person, now they are going to providing Remote Learning online. Just a commoninability to have the data in different boroughs in london and work out some of them once they are proposing to glue the schools have lower infection rates, much lower than other bowlers where they we re lower than other bowlers where they were prepared to keep them open. It seems to be inexplicable to me that the government is getting the so badly wrong. If we look at the big picture, is your unions position this morning, and given what we know presently across the whole of england, is it your position that all schools should be closed . We wrote to the Prime Minister before christmas and we said if you look at the infection rates now, among secondary School Pupils, they are the highest range dynamic age range had been infected with covid, and primary students are the second highest age range. We know pupils can transmit the virus to their homes, through to their families and into their community. They are the most effective transmitter at the virus. You combine that with the new value being up to 70 more infective than the previous covid varying, which was very infective. It is clear we have to do something to break the chain of rising levels of infection in our community. If we do not do that, the nhs will become overwhelmed and the danger is that by opening schools as lovers of infection are rising so high, and of early so high as levels of infection of rising so high, we will not break the chain. We said all schools should be closed for the first two weeks and we regret to have to say that. Our worry is if we do not do something now, they will have to be closed for much longer, for a much longer period of time later on. You have made it very clear, you are talking about a two week period, whilejust talking about a two week period, while just two weeks . What is likely to change . The infection rate may wait till the same in two weeks time. What would be the thing different than which makes you think it would be safe to open schools quiz among hopeful with two weeks christmas break, where there was mixing over christmas and that has raised levels of infection u nfortu nately, raised levels of infection unfortunately, you would hope that for a month where the lottery has been less mixing, the levels will go down in the community and in schools. And if they have not . If they havent, we on a dangerous situation. We hope they have. We hopein situation. We hope they have. We hope in these two weeks, what schools could do implement new measures to make the transmission of the virus less possible in schools. And to set up, to properly set up the testing, the lateral flow testing in secondary schools and to extend that to Primary Schools so there is a way of, so there are more ways of tragically viral levels low in schools. Because if they get out of control in schools, that tra nsfers to of control in schools, that transfers to the community. You are not going to get education if this virus gets out of control in the Community Big schools will have to close than for a longer period of time. What are your members telling you in preparing us for the testing regime which is in place in secondary schools in theory . We were told that its going to be a drop of equipment on monday. What are you hearing about some of these practicalities and the situation as it stands now . Iam afraid, and the situation as it stands now . I am afraid, im sorry to have to keep using this word, im afraid those preparations are equally chaotic. The government is saying the army will drop the test on monday. What School Leaders have to do, in secondary schools for 1000 students, you will need about 21 volu nteers students, you will need about 21 volunteers because teachers and support staff cannot do it. They have a job to do. These volunteers have a job to do. These volunteers have to be trained, there are series of webinars apparently lasting, a series of webinars for them to be trained and then schools have to find these volunteers, train them, find these volunteers, train them, find these volunteers, train them, find the space to do the testing, then arrange the appointments with pupils, a thousand pupils, 2000 has, and have that all up and running. We do not think it is a job for schools to be doing this. They have a job to do and that is educating children. We believe they have a job to do and thatis we believe they have a job to do and that is educating children. We believe there should be a Public Health organised event. We think that just as they health organised event. We think thatjust as they come in at the beginning of the pandemic got a million volunteers to help with the health service, we think the government should be advertising for volu nteers government should be advertising for volunteers and it should be Public Health leading this because it is a Public Health duty to do that. Its schools are going to find it incredibly difficult to get this up and running in time and to do it as well as Public Health would be doing it, because they are the health professionals. Mary bousted, from the National Education union, we appreciate your time is this morning. Thank you. Pointing out the scale of rolling that out in secondary schools. It will be massive. Heres chris with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. We have been talking this morning about snow in eastern scotla nd this morning about snow in eastern scotland and this is one of our Early Morning weather watcher pictures. The snow has been looking across fife, east lothian, looking across fife, east lothian, looking across the Scottish Borders into north west england. We could see to five centimetres in places. We have a sharp frost is around as well. Temperatures down to 7 in the cold est well. Temperatures down to 7 in the coldest spots. Edinburgh is 5. A day to day of sunshine and showers, the showers have some snow in them, particularly for northern scotland and across north east england. The snow showers pushed outwards across other parts of Northern England later on today. Perhaps mostly to men towards the east coast itself come the afternoon. Biden up across south east england and Northern Ireland but the cloud and showers moving from wales into South West England later today. Quite a lot going on weather wise. It stays cold and overnight tonight there will be and overnight tonight there will be a sharp frost for scotland and Northern Ireland. Eastern scotland, is areas of england, a bit of snow mixed in with showers, particularly over hills. Temperatures potentially down to 7, 8 in this coldest spots. For sunday, we will see a change in the wind direction, coming from a north easterly direction but not a change in how the weather feels. Another cold day, the showers widespread across eastern scotland, is to england, pushing into midlands and wales and South West England with time. They perhaps merged together to give longer spells of rain across parts of kent. It will feel cold again, temperatures between four and six celsius. Into the week ahead, it is going to stay on the cold side. Continue to see this High Pressure across scandinavia steering in the north easterly wind, steering and further showers around as well. Just like today, just like tomorrow, risk of icy stretches as we start the day on monday with a frosty started the day. Showers widespread eastern areas, the best of the dry weather and such sunshine across western earners. Temperatures are for six celsius. Little change in the weather in the week ahead. Stays cold, since no particular later in the week. Some snow around particularly later in the week. Thank you. Hospital bosses are warning the next few weeks will be nail bitingly difficult for the nhs, amid a surge in coronavirus patients, especially in london and the south east of england. Lets get an idea of the situation facing uk hospitals today. During the peak of the first wave in april last year, around 3,500 people were admitted to hospital each day with covid 19 in the uk. Currently that number stands at around 2,400. Hospital admissions have reached a record high. In april, there were around 21,000 patients receiving treatment. That number has now exceeded 23,000. But a smaller proportion of people are receiving the most intensive care back in april, 3,300 were ventilated, now the latest figure is around 1,800. We can speak now to intensive care consultant dr amijones and the president of the Royal College of physicians, professor Andrew Goddard. Andrew, you have spoken about how difficult things are at the moment and in your view, worse than they we re and in your view, worse than they were at the peak of the pandemic the first time round. We have got more people in hospital, but also we have winter happening. The winter pressures that we see at this time of year, this is the busiest weekend period ever in the year. Normally. Now with covid, busier than ever. More people in hospital with covid, but less in intensive care. What is without . I think we know how to manage it better than we did in the first way. They had using steroids, it is kept a lot of people out of itu. It has had more widespread use of cpap, it is a way that we can improve the organisation without having to incubate them. There is mousse and a better understanding of the virus has allowed us to keep people out of itu as much as possible. Ami jones, possible. Amijones, we will bring possible. Ami jones, we will bring you possible. Amijones, we will bring you in. Some people might think it does not sound as dangerous as it was, what would you say to that . It is equally as dangerous, the hospitals are bursting. We have way more patients in hospital. May be slightly less in icu but we do not have the support. We pretty much turned the hospital off in the first wave and we had everyone coming to help us. I have my bare bones stuff, no additional staff, a quarter of them are off sick or self isolating. We have physical bed spaces and ventilators, we do not have the staff. The hospital is pulling from all direction, they need help because there are so many patients inside. Tell us about your concerns for the immediate period coming up because theres been much talk about the delay between a possible mixing that has happened directly over the christmas and new year period, either when the remark within or without the restrictions, what are your concerns . We know every time we see the figures every day, we know that will sting us in about ten to 12 days time in the hospital, sometimes a little bit earlier. We are not at day ten post christmas and it is exceedingly busy. My colleague said the hospitals are the busiest they have other ben and were preparing ourselves for it is going to get busy and the people who do not obey the rules and continue to mix, the busier we are going to get. We will reach the point where we do not have the staff and the people to look after people safely any more. Professor, do you want to pick up on the . You can get lost in the statistic sometimes, but they are releva nt. Statistic sometimes, but they are relevant. 50,000 statistic sometimes, but they are relevant. 50 , 000 positive statistic sometimes, but they are relevant. 50,000 positive tests over the last two days, the most recent figures. The knock on from that, the hospitals will feel that and they will know that is coming. U nfortu nately, will know that is coming. Unfortunately, those figures i think are fairly mild to what we are going to see in a weeks time. There is no doubt that christmas is going to have a big impact. The new variant is also can have a big impact, we know that is more infectious, more transmissible, so i think the large numbers that we are seeing the south east and london and south wales is now going to be reflected over the next month, two months even over the next month, two months even over the next month, two months even over the rest of the country. I think most health care professionals, nurses, doctors are really worried about what the cup do you next couple of months means. We are you next couple of months means. We a re really you next couple of months means. We are really tired from the first and second ways and there is a long way to go. One of the things are so insiders are realising is the one of the things us outsiders are realising, we know that patients have been transferred to other places in england, where there is less pressure, given the picture you are painting at those pressures mounting up everywhere, i guess that means that is one of the avenues that will not be available in terms of dealing with patients as the pressure grow. Yes. The moving of patients around between different hospitals is standard practice, mutual aid and we do that in times of surge in crisis normally. I think the body is as we use up hospital beds, particularly Critical Care beds, particularly Critical Care beds, that will become harder and harder. Because most of the sort of surge that we are seeing at the moment incidents that parts of the country there is capacity elsewhere at the moment. We hope as the surge increases elsewhere in the country it will start to die down in the places that are busy at the moment. We might get away with it. But i think we have to be prepared for the scenario, hopefully bass, prepare for the worse. It is up to everyone in the country to be aware of this and we cannot let our guard down. We have really got to try really hard to do those boring things, wearing a mask, keeping social distancing, washing our hands. Until a vaccination comes in and does its job, that is what our best defence is going to be. Doctorjones, 2600 Covid Patients in wales last week, thatis Covid Patients in wales last week, that is record breaking for the nation, how our staff coping and what would you say to people who are suffering from fatigue when it comes to lockdown restrictions . The staff we are a little bit ahead of england in terms of how bad art numbers have been so we are thinking how we will carry on and keep making space and finding ways to look after these patients and i reiterate, please obey the rules, stop mixing with other households because its spreading like wildfire and we havent got much space in hospitals allowed. You dont want it to beat you or one of your family that needs hospital care, notjust you or one of your family that needs hospital care, not just covid related, you have a car accident and i have no itu beds, think about more thanjust yourself. I have no itu beds, think about more than just yourself. Are you working today . I just than just yourself. Are you working today . Ijust finished on court this morning so i have this weekend off but i am back in on monday and i expect a horrific week. We wish you well, and respect for all the work you and your colleagues are doing, and professor goddard, good to speak to you both. Sta rt to you both. Start messaging about the situation on the ground there. Stay with us, headlines coming up. Hello, this is breakfast with Nina Warhurst and charlie stayt. Lets check in with mike now for a look at the days sport. We are reflecting on yesterdays first of all. Before we get to Manchester United, it isa before we get to Manchester United, it is a huge day for scottish football. Today marks 50 years since one of scotlands worst tragedies. It was on this day, 1971, when 66 people were crushed to death, leaving a derby between rangers and celtic, at the Ibrox Stadium in glasgow. Andrew picken reports on how the disaster still impacts communities across scotland. 1971 was only two days old when rangers met celtic at ibrox. The game was dull and many fans started leaving before late goals for either side during the last five minutes. Commentator thats as near as well get today the day became infamous for the deadly crush which developed on a stairway at the rangers end of the stadium. Among the victims were five teenagers from markinch in fife, who never came home. We were all together, just joking, having a wee bit of banter. There was no animosity because they were Rangers Supporters and we were celtic supporters, there was nothing like that. We were pals. Celtic fans peter leigh and shane fenton were among those who left early that day. It wasnt until we got back to kincardine, where the supporters used to stop on the way back and the older boys would go into the pub for a pint or whatever, nick came back out of the pub and onto the bus, telling us what hed seen on the television, there had been an incident at ibrox, there had been fatalities at the rangers end of the ground. That was the first of us knowing about anything happening at all. The boys were among the 66 dead and 145 injured. 50 years on, modern crowd science has given us a better understanding of what went wrong. In a crowd thats packed to the levels of density that eyewitnesses were commenting on at ibrox, and on a slope, then you get the Gravitational Force added to the fall, and as each person falls onto others then you get a cascade dynamic. In the wake of the disaster, rangers rebuild the stadium, making it one of the safest in europe. Across scotland on january 2nd, people will mark the 50th anniversary of the ibrox disaster. Andrew picken, bbc news. Lets speak now to a supporter who was at the game that day, rangers fan, professor graham walker. Morning, graham. Hgppy happy time. Happy new year and thanks for your time. I recall entering the ground via stairway 13 but such was the density of the crowd that i had to move along the terracing to get a view of the match and it was this that ensured i left bya and it was this that ensured i left by a different exit so in many ways i end by a different exit so in many ways iend and by a different exit so in many ways i end and say that saved my life. When did you realise what was unfolding and how many people had lost their lives . About halfanhour after the match when i was leaving with fans, there were fans with transistor radios who had heard reports and so on but it wasnt until i got home that i realised the full scale of the tragedy. How do you feel, it must have left you numb at the time . Very much so and for some time afterwards people were in a state of shock. Fans reconsidered whether they should go to matches, a lot stopped going to matches, a lot we re lot stopped going to matches, a lot were more careful about where they stood and how they exited grounds, but i think it still took a lot of time before real measures were put in place for crowd safety. At that timei in place for crowd safety. At that time i think the clubs and the authority didnt pay enough attention to crowd safety, they were fixated on crowd behaviour, the hooligan problem so that tended to get in the way of action on crowd safety. Thankfully now ibrox is a different stadium, a lot of measures we re different stadium, a lot of measures were put into place after this. Yes, rangers rebuilt the stadium over ten yea rs rangers rebuilt the stadium over ten years until it became a virtual seater stadium, they were ahead of the time in doing that in a british context. The english clubs and english football authorities should have paid a bit more attention to ibrox. There was a tendency because this was an old firm fixture and that fixture was notorious in many ways, there was a tendency may be to explain away the event in relation to that and not take on more sufficiently the lessons. And england had their own tragedy at hillsborough 18 years later. 50 yea rs on hillsborough 18 years later. 50 years on you working to make sure those who perished are not forgotten. There is a plaque at the ground with the names of victims but you are determined to keep their memory going. This is the case with most in many ways the plaque and later the statute were the result of effo rts later the statute were the result of efforts by its supporters to make sure this was never forgotten. It was supporters at grass roots level who put pressure on the club to make sure this was marked appropriately. Like many fans your wish for today would be, there are ibrox taking pa rt would be, there are ibrox taking part in commemorations but of course the Important Message is to stay at home and stay safe because of covid 19 so how will you mark it . |j will stay at home, as most people well, but i do believe there will be as short Memorial Service at the ground before the match. Thanks for yourtime, ground before the match. Thanks for your time, professor graham walker, who was at the stadium aged 14, 15 yea rs who was at the stadium aged 14, 15 years ago. You can see the full documentary, disclosure stairway 13 on the bbc iplayer. The rangers manager Steven Gerrard also reiterated that there would be also reiterated that there would be a scaled down commemoration to day but the message for fans is to stay safe at home. A new year, and new hopes for Manchester United, and winning the title could be among ole gunnar solskaers new year resolutions, after they went level on points with liverpool, at the top of the premier league last night, thanks to their win over aston villa, and we can say happy new year to dan walker, who will have more on this on football focus. What a turnaround because 1st of november they were 15, nine points off the top. Good morning, mike. Manchester united first team to win ten games this season. So many stats around this game and when they won that game against aston villa last night, you could see what it meant to the players to be level on points with liverpool. Liverpool play southampton on monday night so there is loads of stuff on football focus this weekend. I note you havejust mentioned the ibrox disaster, Ronnie Forsyth was at that game in 1971 and he will pay tribute and take as to exactly what happened when there was 66 people died at ibrox on the same weekend that rangers plate look at that today and we will pay tribute to the great tommy docherty, a former Manchester United and scotla nd former Manchester United and scotland manager who sadly passed away this week, and a legendary dundee managerjim mclean, we will pay tribute to two incredible men, i was fortu nate pay tribute to two incredible men, i was fortunate enough to work with tommy doc for many years in a former life at a Radio Station in manchester and he was fantastic company, he loved the game, and lou macari, who won the fa cup under him. We will also hearfrom Brendan Rodgers, the leicester manager, they play at newcastle this weekend and Brendan Rodgers has been talking to us about how he takes leicester from work they are at the moment to a tea m work they are at the moment to a team who can challenge all the time. Our ambitions havent changed. Our ambitions what it was at at the beginning of the season could we find european football ain . There are other teams that will be better than us, thats an honest answer, but what we will always do is we will always work to bridge that gap and were not there yet but we are looking to get closer and closer to that and be really, really competitive and i think over the course of the season weve shown that but we still have so much work to do. Thats Brendan Rogers in conversation with my colleague, that will be on football focus i mentioned liverpool plate manchester on monday. If you are into your fifa, James Ward Prowse has the highest free kick starts on fifa so he knows how to hit a dead ball and we will also look back at the year in womens football, a lovely piece looking back at highlights from the last 12 months so all that from midday on football focus, and we have dion dublin is and Michael Richards for company. Good stuff, look forward to that and i wonder if dan like me needs a bit of toning going into this new year. I need a bit ofjoke works. A bit ofjoke works. He isjust ofjoke works. He is just around the corner, get stretching. Did you hear that click . Before we speak to him lets have a chat with chris about the weather. It looks no way for some of us, this is one of our Early Morning weather watcher pictures sent to us from that castleton moor area of north yorkshire, its not the only place that has seen snow, we have seen this note work across five, east lothian and the Scottish Borders, the risk of icy stretches, probably several centimetres of snow for some of you. Away from that area its a cold and frosty start for the day, temperatures have got down to 7 in parts of scotland, looking at that weather picture throughout the rest of the day we will see that snow continue to work across Northern England, showers for wales and South West England, more rain although there could be sleet and snow mixed in and snow showers for northern scotland, then overnight showers will be widespread for scotland, Eastern England, some of those could be snowy especially over higher areas, lower temperatures across Northern Ireland and scotland, temperatures could get down to 7 and then for the second half of the weekend, High Pressure in scandinavia steers in north easterly winds so we have changed the wind direction but it will be another cold day, eastern scotla nd will be another cold day, eastern scotland and england seeing frequent showers in the morning, they will push west so showers for the midlands, wales and southern england, potentially emerging in parts of kent. The best dry weather and sunshine for the north and west of scotla nd and sunshine for the north and west of scotland and for Northern Ireland but another cold day. Next week this area of High Pressure goes nowhere fast so it will stay cold. For monday and that means a frost to start the day and a risk of icy stretches, showers widespread again for scotland and Eastern England, moving west across the midlands and wales but there could be lengthier downpours across canada, the best dry weather and sunshine biased towards the north and west of the uk but even where the sunshine comes out it will stay cold with temperatures between four and 6 degrees and as we look at the forecast through the week, it will stay cold with temperatures below average for the time of year but it will not be a dry week with plenty of showers, initially across the scotla nd of showers, initially across the scotland and eastern areas of england as the week goes on i suspect there will be some areas of snow so a week to stay in touch with the weather forecast. Snowy areas today, that could cause a few problems with icy stretches. Nene and charlie come back to you. Chris, stay with us for a moment because i would like to introduce you tojoe wicks. Good morning, chris, happy new year to you. I was doing one of your workouts during the year and it turns out i have a knee that clicks. It was one of those ice skating moves it was one of those ice skating m oves you it was one of those ice skating moves you do where you put your knee behind your leg, mind makes a horrible clicking noise but i have enjoyed it. Mine is the same, sometimes you have to warm it up a bit but it shouldnt be a problem. Joe, i was going to ask you because chris is stuck in a little box doing the weather, a lot of people have been stuck in small spaces so is there a particular weather presenter movement you could give him . Look, ease off already. Anything that involves full Body Movement so squats, lunges, you dont need a lot of space so leaning on exercise and turning your living room or bedroom into a workouts space because that will make it more sustainable and you can do 20 minutes a day and it will make a huge difference to your physical and Mental Health. Can i say id identify with that need, chris . I do the same whenever i try one ofjoes squats. Tell us a bit about what you have in store for people because you were saying a moment ago, joe has reached a lot of people. You have revolutionised the way i exercise, in fact i have a whatsapp group, ladies in their late 305 trying to fight the wobble and every day we will send photos of ourselves after we have done a joe wicks and that groupthink encourages you. Good catching up with you. Good luck with the new year and nice to see you. Our next story is about the connections that have been formed because of coronavirus. Its the story of bereaved families and a father and son who wanted to do something to honour the Health Care Staff working on the front line who lost their lives. Paul and james gilley started crowdfunding to produce a special statue to be given to as many bereaved families of nhs staff as possible, as fi lamdin has been finding out. These are just some of the nhs staff across the uk who have lost their lives to covid 19. Nurses, doctors, consultants, porters and health care assistants. I know the thoughts of the whole house are with their families and friends. What we realised when boris made that statement is that nobody was saying thank you to those families that had lost their lives going to war to keep us safe, and so yes, we were clapping and saying thank you to the nhs and all those key workers for keeping the world moving but we wanted to do something to say thank you to those families that had lost their loved ones. Paul and james gilley, a father and son team, watched their business collapse overnight as the pandemic hit. It was almost within that day, our work and our income decided to just dry up and stop. Theyd lost so much but at the same time wanted to give something. The idea of a statue figure came up and we met a lady called lucianne laselle who makes beautiful things and she sent us this picture and we were like oh, my goodness, that isjust the most beautiful thing. I think that probably made us cry at that time. With the statues completed, they started delivering the angels to some of the families of the nhs workers whod died. In memory ofjo, a nurse working in merseyside. Simon, a radiologist in cumbria. Hefin, a hospital receptionist in warrington. And jen, a Mental Health expert in cambridge. There was a part of me that thought this is jen. Shes invincible, shes immortal, shes not going to die, shes not going to leave us, shes going to beat this. Jenny and jen met in hospital, working on the same ward. I love the sunny days, i love the waterfalls. She had a real desire to help people. She had a way of making people feel good about themselves. Together they lived with their two daughters but both mums became very sick with covid and were rushed to hospital and intensive care. I said tojen, please, please, please fight this, fight it with everything youve got. And she said, dont worry. You listen to me, i want you to be really strong and i want you to fight it too. And were going to leave this place together. I love you but i gotta go now. And thats the last time i spoke to her. Jen died of the 17th of april. Jen died on the 17th of april. James is delivering the 27th angel and its forjenny and her girls. So this is an angel in memory ofjen, on behalf of the nation, for everything that she has done for the nhs. Thank you so much. Its for you and your family. It felt amazing. It somehow felt like it was recognising the loss and also how much she gave, to recognise the loss of someone great. It was really lovely, really lovely. Fiona lamdin, bbc news. Listening think good luck with what is to come next so we wish them all the best. And what a beautiful gesture the statues are. This time last year, australia was in the middle of its most intense bushfire season on record, in which 33 people lost their lives. Since then, two major inquiries have found that Climate Change had exacerbated the conditions which caused the fires. Our australia correspondent Shaimaa Khalil reports. It was the bushfire season australians had feared. Conditions were dry for months and the heat was soaring. But nothing prepared them for the catastrophic blazes they faced. Australias black summer shocked the nation and the world. A year ago i met russell scholes, a volunteer firefighter in the town of balmoral. His house was burned to the ground while he was helping his next door neighbour. He and his wife now live in a converted garage on the same land. It will be many months until their new property is built. Our Living Conditions are better than what they were, but theyre still pretty harsh. All the dead trees around us remind you of the fire. You cant get away from it. It is there and its there to remind us. If we get hot days and huge winds, that really starts to make the hairs on your back stand on end. Itjust makes you feel not again. You know, we dont want that again. Last summers bushfires were unprecedented in their ferocity and the huge destruction that they caused. Most scientists agree that Climate Change played a big part in creating the catastrophic fire conditions and a Royal Commission enquiry now says that further Global Warming is inevitable within the next 20 years and that australians should prepare for more extreme weather. New years eve was a defining moment of the bushfire season. Oh, my god this was the town of rosedale in New South Wales on the day. Holiday makers and locals sheltering on the beach, watching in horror. Oh, my god two thirds of the homes here were destroyed. I felt very focused on just staying alive. And, secondly, doing what they could with our defences to save our property. But ultimately that wasnt possible. The radiant heat was just too strong. Jack egan survived after taking shelter in a fire bunker. It was a life changing moment. He quit his job and focused full time on campaigning for more action on Climate Change. Were a canary in a coal mine here. We have to play our part as the canary that broadcasts to the world watch out, its coming for you and its coming fast but the climate debate is politically divisive here. Fossil fuels, especially coal and gas, are among australias most valuable exports and the government has so far resisted pressure to commit to net zero Carbon Emissions by 2050. Our policies wont be set in the united kingdom, they wont be set in brussels, they wont be set in any part of the world other than here, because its australians jobs and its australias economy of australias recovery from the covid 19 recession that matters to me and my cabinet in the decisions we take. In areas battered by the bushfires there are now signs of life. But most experts say that unless something is done quickly to address the Climate Crisis in australia and around the world, this level of devastation will become the norm. Shaimaa khalil, bbc news, New South Wales. Stay with us, headlines coming up. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Nina Warhurst and charlie stayt. Our headlines today pressure grows to shut more schools. A Teaching Union demands a two week closure of all primaries and secondaries in england. We dont want to have to say that schools will close. But our fear is if we dont do something now, theyre going to have to be closed for much longer, for a much longer period later on this month. A new warning over hospitals. A senior doctor tells breakfast that nhs staff across the uk should prepare for a spike in covid admissions. 50 years since the ibrox disaster in which 66 football fans were killed, rangers and celtic will today come together to pay tribute to the victims. A new year and new title hopes for Manchester United. Theyre now level on points with the champions liverpool at the top of the premier league, after beating aston villa last night. Its saturday, 2nd january. Our top story in the past hour, the head of the countrys largest Teaching Union has told breakfast that all schools in england should close for the next two weeks to combat rising Coronavirus Infections. Yesterday the government ordered all Primary Schools in london to remain shut when the new term begins, saying it was a last resort. But mary bowsted, the joint general secretary of the National Education union, told us that nationwide closures are now required. Its clear that we have to do something to break the chain of rising levels of infection in our community. If we dont do that, the nhs will become overwhelmed. And the danger is that by opening schools as levels of infection are rising so high, and are already so high amongst pupils, then we are not going to break that chain and our nhs will become overwhelmed. So we said all schools should be closed for the first two weeks, and we regret to have to say that, we dont want to have to say that schools will close. But our fear is if we dont do something now, theyre going to have to be closed for much longer, for a much longer period later on this month. Lets remind ourselves of the picture for schools right across the uk. In england, the changes announced earlier this week mean secondary School Pupils taking exams will go back on the 11th january. All other pupils will learn remotely until at least the 18th. Most Primary Schools will still open as normal on monday, apart from those in virus hotspots of london and the south east. Theyll stay closed to all but children of keyworkers and vulnerable families. In Northern Ireland, the return for pupils will be delayed for by a week or more. Meanwhile, Online Learning is planned for pupils in wales until at least the 11th of january. And finally in scotland, pupils wont return to face to face learning in the classroom until at least the middle of the month. Lets get more from our Political Correspondent helen catt, whos in our london newsroom. The unions are very clear, we were hearing a moment ago that they believe there should be two week clarity over all england, the u turn has happened that specific to certain schools in london. What do think will happen next . You are right. There seems to be mounting pressure from the greens for this to be extended far wider than just london. There may be there seems to be mounting pressure from the unions. I think there will be relu cta nce unions. I think there will be reluctance from government to widen that and beyond london. They have been clear throughout the pandemic that it believes school should stay open, that closing them as a last resort, as far as it is concerned schools are safe places for children to be and it is too damaging for the life chances to be out of the classroom for any significant length of time. The situation london has come about after 48 hours of talking to london authorities. It is a quite a shift from where the government was previously, if you look back to mid december, it was deploying legal action against greenwich when it wa nted action against greenwich when it wanted to close schools earlier. It isa wanted to close schools earlier. It is a significant shift in decision. I think it will be reluctant to make that wider in the National Lockdown, School Stayed open, it is pretty committed to that. There is pressure coming from other areas as well. The disruption of last minute changes, not just disruptive to disruption of last minute changes, notjust disruptive to teachers and pupils as well but parents and to their employees. The federation of Small Businesses today saying that you would now have three quarters of the population in tier 4 and more schools closing, this is approaching Something Like a National Lockdown and it needs to be more support. Helen, thank you. A number of hospitals are now facing a worse situation than at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic last year thats according to the president of the Royal College of physicians. In london, the Nightingale Hospital is now being readied for action. Huge. The government says tens of millions of doses of at least two covid vaccines will be available by the spring. Getting those to the people who need them most will be crucial as the nhs fights the winter wave of this pandemic. Jim reed, bbc news. Today marks 50 years since the ibrox disaster. The tragedy saw 66 people die in a crush whilst they leaving a new years derby game between rangers and celtic, at the ibrox football stadium in glasgow, on the second of january 1971. It was one of scotlands worst peacetime tragedies. Those are some of the main story this morning. It is nine minutes past nine. The number of coronavirus cases and sadly deaths continues to climb. But its hoped vaccinations could stop the spread and pave the way for a return to normality. Monday sees the roll out of a second covid 19 vaccine across the uk. The Oxford Astrazeneca jab was approved for use earlier this week. Youve been sending in your questions were going to try to answer some of them now, with epidemiologist professor sian griffiths. Good morning to you. And virologist dr chris smith. And happy new year, are you allowed to say that . Happy new year Gordon Brooks asks why the new uk covid 19 variant is so transmissible, and what more can we do to protect ourselves . Good morning, happy new year to you, gordon. There are a number of possible culprits to why this is more transmissible. One the changes are to this virus to attack the outer coat and the spike protein. This is the bet that the virus uses to infect ourselves. Changes that might affect the stability of these bye, it might make it stickier, it means the virus will be more efficient in getting into ourselves. There is documented reports, at early stages at the moment, of people who have the new variant having slightly higher levels of virus in the body. It may well be that the virus reproduces a bit faster which means people make more of it and if you make more of it, he will release into the environment around you more of it and that means there is more chance of a person you encounter themselves and an infectious dose, a threshold amount of virus you need to get infected from you. It could be one, it could be multiple factors like that. We do not know for sure at the moment. Chris, in words, can you give us a picture . The area around them, say you are walking along and you laugh, where you carrying the new strain of the virus, what does that look like . You talk about its increased transmission rate, what does that look like . A person who is infected with a respiratory infection, viruses do this, and bacteria, when you are breathing, talking, singing, shouting, doing anything, you are releasing into the air fine mist of droplets and that is because the virus is growing on the airways, the lung passages, and when you blow air out of them, some of those droplets which are under most services are carried with the air into the air around you. If there is virus there, on these surfaces, it will be wrapped up in the droplets that leave the body. These will drift around in the air around you, some of them are tiny, some of the droplets are smaller than particles of smoke that come off the end of a cigarette. If you can imagine where smoke would go if you were in a room with someone who smoking, you can imagine that is a very good proxy markerfor imagine that is a very good proxy marker for where the droplets leaving a marker for where the droplets leavin a ersons marker for where the droplets leaving a persons body would go. If you can smell the smoke from the date or cigarette, you are inhaling molecules that were in their lungs a few moments before and it is the same with viruses. Gosh, that paints a very clear picture. You are actually going to read and enough virus, of the higher variant, that some will run into the nose and throat and successfully infect them. Lets come to you now sian. People will start getting the oxford vaccine from monday. Rosalind simanis asks many people will get the vaccine each day. Everybody is wondering this estimate, 12 weeks, everyone vaccinated to as vulnerable, is that realistic . There has been a huge ramping up of the ability to give the vaccine. On monday, we will see the Oxford Astrazeneca faxing being given to the public, to the vulnerable groups. Many gps have come together to networks and they have been inviting the vulnerable, the elderly first and the over 80s first, and then working their way through the population. You can get the vaccine from your gp network and you will be invited to get your vaccine by the practice. You wait for the call. People are also getting vaccinated in hospitals as well as in care homes. The absolute number is difficult to tell because we are ramping up the programme to such an extent but that is really good news. By the end of the month, they should be Mass Vaccination Centres setup. The numbers will go into the millions very quickly, about a million shots have already been given and that number will continue to go up because the government has actually an order or hundred million doses of the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine and 30 million at the Pfizer Biontech faxing. It would be a huge logistical exercise bringing together, inviting people income at the gps are getting organised, running them mass campaigns. We shouldnt see millions being vaccinated by the end of the month. we vaccinated by the end of the month. We should see millions. The government is saying that they will try to, with some figures for the number of people who have been vaccinated to that point. That is going to be a key area of interest across medicine as well as across the Wider Society. We will be interested to know the numbers vaccinated. It will be difficult to collate the data, you can do it on numbers of cases distributed, but if you think of gp surgeries coming together, it is a logistic exercise monitoring how much the uptake rate. We hope everyone is invited comes forward. If everyone comes forward, you can estimate the numbers then. You are going to have doses given out in hospitals. You need a huge Data Collection process. Im sure it will be possible, but i think there will be possible, but i think there will bea be possible, but i think there will be a delay on figures of the trust that with the amount of effort that is going into this programme that it is going into this programme that it is reaching as many people as possible, as fast as possible. The scale of it is so hard to get your head around it. This ones for you, chris linda slade wants to know what is in the vaccine and shes also asked what the key differences are between the differentjabs . She says she likes to know what is going into her body. Hello, lender. The devil is in the detail. There are two different entities. There are two different entities. The Pfizer Vaccine is a genetic vaccine, theyve taken a short piece of the genetic code of the valley specifically the piece that it uses to encode on the outer coat, the spike protein at the virus. They have wrapped it up into an oily bad which you then inject millions of those particles into the body. They get that message into cells at the site of injection that reads the genetic code and turns the genetic code into the material that the virus would make wear it in your body for real and they educate the immune system. In this way, shows your immune system what the sales would look like word their coronavirus growing on them. That piece of Genetic Information is present only for a short period of time before it is degraded, so the vaccine education process only happens transiently. The Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine, this isa the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine, this is a modified virus, they have taken a chimpanzee called virus, there is various reasons why they have used it. They have removed from at key genes that make the virus run, so it cannot grow in our bodies. It will grow in the lab under special circumstances so they can make a million to 2 million doses a week, but it will not grow in the body. They have inserted virus the genetic code of the outer coat of the coronavirus so it works like a trojan horse. The viruses picked up by sales at the site of injection. It does not do anything that the virus would normally do in the body but it releases into the cell the genetic code of the career advice outer coat. It means you decode that gene, make the corresponding part of the outer coat of the virus and use that to educate the immune system. What you get is antibodies which are sticky molecules that go around in the bloodstream, biding to neutralise things that should not be the and white blood cells that know how to recognise and destroy viral infected cells. You get both arms of immune response to defend you into the future. We are discussing schools, it is a big subject, there are real concerns about how the virus is transmitting within schools and the dangers there. How do you see the relevance of the School Situation in terms of the Wider Society . Schools. Well, we are very concerned to try to keep children in school as much as possible because we know the benefit of schools not just in terms of education but in terms of social development, their well being, that is the driving deciding factor. But as this particular variant of the virus seems to spread easily among children than the previous variant and that is worrying because that means there is more infections and schools that can spread to communities. When the level gets to the level it is in london and the south east, then the decision has been made that home or delaying schooling for a couple of weeks is preferable. It is a matter of weighing it up area by area, but it is because this new variant does spread amongst children, amongst particularly teenagers, not just what the steps are being taken to balance the educational advantage of being in school with the risk of the virus spreading in the population. It is something, it will need to be reviewed constantly because this virus is transmitting so quickly and thatis virus is transmitting so quickly and that is the major anxiety with this virus. It transmits much more quickly than the previous variant did and so everything needs to be ke pt did and so everything needs to be kept under discussion throughout. Many thanks. The two sides at the same coin, schools closing because of the new strain but at the same time the vaccine being ruled out, good news ahead but still got to be careful. How is your knee . Was that the problem . It only clicks when i do job works work out joe wicks work out. I will try not to move too much. We have some snow around this morning. I will show you the snow showers on the radar picture. These are showers on the radar picture. These a re pretty showers on the radar picture. These are pretty clumpy showers, merging together to give some lengthier. Snow across north east england at the moment. Could see a few centimetres of snow building and in places and besides that, widespread frost. Even where it is not known, the risk of some icy stretches on untreated roads and surfaces. Through the day today, we will see this area of snow across north east england pushing southwards across yorkshire and lincolnshire as well, i reckon around the east coast will publish the transition back to rain and sleet. The showers looking across wales and South West England, most of these are falling as rain, a bit of sleet and snow every high ground and we will continue to see snow showers throughout the day across northern scotland. Not sewing everywhere, south east england batting up, sunshine for Northern Ireland, not a bad day first central scotland. Cold wherever you are. It gets colder overnight tonight, particularly where we have the clear skies to the north west where we could see temperatures getting down to 7, minus eight celsius. There will be widespread showers further east and there is a risk of some icy stretches as we head into sunday. Sunday, they winds have changed direction, coming infrom sunday, they winds have changed direction, coming in from a north easterly direction. The feel of the weather will not change a great deal, it will be another cold day. These north easterly winds will bring widespread showers across east scotland, eastern areas of england and they will blow westwards with times, reaching across the midlands, wales, in the southern counties of england as well. Many of the show falling as rain but a bit of sleet snow could be mixed in with them particularly over high ground. Temperatures on the cold side. In this area of High Pressure is not going anywhere fast and it is going to continue to feed in the chilly north easterly winds as we head into the week ahead. Monday, we have got plenty of showers around the east scotland, in, eastern areas of england, published some longer spells of rain running into parts of kent. Most of the dry and bright weather with sunshine further north and west. For west scotland and Northern Ireland. Cold weather, temperatures for six celsius. Little change in the weekend, plenty of showers but some others could see some snow later in the week. It will not be a dry week. Weve had an e mailfrom a not be a dry week. Weve had an e mail from a viewer, not be a dry week. Weve had an e mailfrom a viewer, a grisly knee, you need to go see your gp. Its properly all the swimming i do. Breaststroke is not very good for the needs. Knees. Breaststroke is not very good for the needs. Knees. The things you find out on this programme were two days into 2021 and the festivities may be over, but that hasnt stopped a classic Christmas Song finally reaching number one 36 years after it was first released. It is my favourite Christmas Song. In fact, one of my favourite songs full stop. Last christmas by wham was streamed more than nine million times over the last week, and has topped the uk singles chart for the very first time and so obviously weve got to play it lets take a look. Last christmas i gave you my heart but the very next day you gave it away you gave it away this year, to save me from tears, ill give it to someone special special once bitten and twice shy i keep my distance, but you still catch my eye tell me, baby, do you recognize me . Well, its been a year, it doesnt surprise me merry christmas, i wrapped it up and sent it with a note saying, i love you, i meant it now i know what a fool ive been but if you kissed me now, i know youd fool me again. Youve got to be careful with the tinsel and the hair. A highly flammable christmas environment. Here to explain to us why this christmas favourite has taken so long to hit the top spot is our entertainment correspondent, colin paterson. Colin you were dancing. It is a classic. One of my friends works in film production, and last yearfor christmas, he gave me Christmas Decorations which were used in last christmas movie, the movie that came out last year. I had been in tears because one of the kids knocked off my favourite one, check the corner of it. Chipped off the corner of it. Talk to us about the song. It is amazing. 36 years ago, the reason i never got to number one when it was out back in 1984, that was the year of band aid. Do they know it is christmas, the bestselling single of all time. George michael was on it as well. What is streaming started to count for the charts, about five yea rs to count for the charts, about five years ago. Now every christmas the old classics reappear. More and more people are streaming every year, and you know how people have smart speakers and they walk into a room and say play me some christmas music, so often the songs that at the top of the playlist are all i wa nt the top of the playlist are all i want for christmas and nos and wham s want for christmas and nos and wham s last want for christmas and nos and wham s last christmas. 9. 2 million plays of it happened around the uk from christmas day. That is pa rt the uk from christmas day. That is part of the year that counted for this chart. That was up to new years day. Do you think this signal, it is slightly melancholy, is daddy 2020 . I think wham wanted to help get this to number one. Wham bands. Every year there is an actual poignancy because George Michael died around christmas. If you want to get your favourite actor number one in the charts, do not stream it, pay for a download. If the song is an old song, you have to play it 200 times for it to count for one sale in the charts. However, if you buy it or download, pay 99p, that counts asa it or download, pay 99p, that counts as a sale and wham did not stream as a sale and wham did not stream as much as mariah carey in the last week, but 1500 wham as much as mariah carey in the last week, but 1500 wham fans bought it. My carey only sold 700 and that is what some the chart battle to wham . Is what some the chart battle to wham . Mariah carey. What is in the wicker box to your right . Christmas hamper, and that is covering the plugs because when ive been watching some of these at home concerts, i think what is distract people, Ellie Golding playing a big one from the states, i kept thinking she has a lot of plugs in the background. I decided i would cover my plugs up this morning and it is not worked at all because we have ended up talking about it. Not worked at all because we have ended up talking about itm not worked at all because we have ended up talking about it. It is my fault, colin. You did a good job and i have ruined it. You have another story, songs that have become available that have not been available that have not been available for a while. Kls, in 1992 we re available for a while. Kls, in 1992 were so big that at the brit awards they had to share best group with simply red. The biggest selling singles in the world in 1991, 3am, what time is love, in 1990, to year they won the brits, they decided to delete their back catalogue. They decided it would no longer be for sale. Kfl have always liked to do stu nts. Sale. Kfl have always liked to do stunts. They bent £1 million on the scottish isle of jura. Stunts. They bent £1 million on the scottish isle ofjura. I thought deleting the back catalogue was an artistic statement to make. Suddenly, january one, their back catalogue all greatest hits became available and streaming services, all those classics, there to number one singles can now be played after a gap of more than 26 years. This has made a lot of people very, very happy at the start of 2021. Interesting how people u turn on those big rock and roll decisions a couple of decades later. Can we just finished by talking about doctor who quiz man the doctors companion is a key role, weve had a big reveal. you watch the new years day special last night, during the end credits, the announcer said stick around if you want to find out some doctor who news. At the end of the credit, there was a shot of livable, a bit of chat and thenjohn bishop loading things into a van there was a shot of liverpool. He started filming in november. No one knew about it. It is the tradition, comedians being in doctor lou, matt lucas, catherine tate, he has also an acting pedigree. He was very good. But i think they do like to have a bit of humour in the show as well. Much . Do you think he will be a good match . When people say it how will billie piper be in doctor who or catherine tate, it works out well so give them time. We have the headlines coming up in a moment. Hello, this is breakfast with Nina Warhurst and charlie stayt. A final check in with mike this morning. Great day for united yesterday. Make no mistake, they are now in the title race. The first team to win ten league games this season. What a difference, a couple of months can make from struggling in 15th in november, to now, the heady heights, of being level on points with liverpool, at the top of the premier league, after beating aston villa 2 1 at old trafford. Were happy with what were doing at the moment, i think we have shown, we have improved a lot in a year, if you go back a year, you go back to arsenal away last new years day, that was a disappointing day. I think weve improved immensely. And well be better, as well, because were getting fitter and fitter and stronger and stronger. West ham manager david moyes said winning at everton for the First Time Since he left the club seven years ago was special. Tomas soucek scored the only goal of the game, late on at goodison park. Its the 50th anniversary of the disaster, in which 66 people lost their lives during a crush at the stadium. Newcastles 100 start to the English Premiership Rugby Union season is over after they lost 29 17 at bristol. The home side went ahead in the first minute of the match the and never lost their lead. A bit like the runners here. That took them above newcastle, into second place in the table behind exeter. Japan Prime Minister insists the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics and paralympics will go ahead this summer, despite concern over a major surge in coronavirus cases. There have been over one thousand daily infections in the city for the first time but Yoshihide Suga said the games will be held this summer and be safe and secure. The olympics are due to begin on 23rd july, with the paralympics a month later. If at first you dont succeed, keep going and try and try again. How about 28 times . Thats how many attempts it has taken dave chissy chisnall, to finally beat the world number one, michael van gerwen. And he didntjust beat him, he thrashed him 5 0 to reach the semi finals of the world darts championship for the first time. No wonder he now believes he can now win the title despite facing another former champion, gary anderson, in the last four. Britains olympic gold medallist, luke campbell, takes on ryan garcia in dallas, texas tonight, as he tries to move closer to a lightweight world title shot. The winner of tonights fight is expected to go on to face, is expected to go on to face the wbc title holder devin haney. So we are up and running, busy with the new year and a football in glasgow and london, Tottenham Leeds sta rts glasgow and london, Tottenham Leeds starts at 1130 so better go and get ready. It is now 9 35am. Lets go back to one of our main stories. Secondary schools pupils in england face a staggered return to class this month to help regain control of rising Coronavirus Infection rates. The delay is intended to help with the roll out of mass testing which the government says will be a milestone moment in keeping schools open. But have schools been given enough time to prepare . Joining us now is sam williamson, head teacher at Merchants Academy dave lee allan, whos chair of the Suffolk Association of secondary headteachers. You have maybe had a busy patch over christmas, trying to make some plans. We are not there yet, there are still a lot to do. I dont think we will be operational in terms of tests for at least a week. We have some significant challenges to work around before we get to that point. What are those challenges . It took us to the nuts and bolts of making sure this happens. We have a number of challenges, number one, space. Every school has different buildings, i havejust taken ownership of a new building which is government built and they drastically reduce the space you operate in soap i literally dont have any communal space for our stu d e nts have any communal space for our students or any extra space that we can look to be hosting the testing n. We have a real headache around that then you have the staffing side. Im getting some brilliant responses from Community Volunteers that they need to be trained and wouldnt need to make sure we have vetting procedures in place and they need to make sure we can safely fit into a need to make sure we can safely fit intoa building need to make sure we can safely fit into a building that is not designed to have an extra 12 or 13 members of staff in it. And all that while you are having to maintain remote teaching and think about keeping kids engaged. To that extent Classroom Teachers are able to focus on that, the government hasnt said they expect teachers should be delivering this but Senior Leaders in the school now have a huge extra weight of challenge given to them in how we operate this and it has been utterly chaotic, as the Headline News today, and the frustration is that i know the unions were talking to the government about this process and about extending christmas back in november so its so frustrating that everything happened so late. You were talking about the practicalities a moment ago. If you are ina practicalities a moment ago. If you are in a situation when you are required by the government to open and you have a date where they say secondary schools should be open, if you make your decision that you were not fully prepared given what you have described and the number of people you need can we open the school . No. It has to be safe. The government have previously said they will take legal action but it should be left to the head teachers on the ground to make the right call and we are not sitting on our hands doing nothing. We want to actively engage ina nothing. We want to actively engage in a Community Spirited effort to try to reduce the virus and its transmission but we know our buildings, we know our schools and our students and communities and should be trusted to make the right decisions for them. Lets bring in sam williamson, head of Merchant Academy in bristol. They was talking about the scale of the challenge and the timing of being drip fed this information at the 11th r. How are you set for monday . We were anticipating the possibility of School Closure so we were prepared for that and a student is left on the last day of term, we sent every student home with our work back and we are prepared because we could see the rate was rising and we knew there was the potential for at least a blended learning to take place. In terms of mass testing there are a series of actions that have to take place but we met as a Leadership Team twice in the last six days and the basic plan is in place and we will be ready to go as long as tests arrive on time and we have enough volunteers which we think we have. Hgppy volunteers which we think we have. Happy new year to you, a challenging time ahead. Can you talk a bit about the drop, the government phraseology for the testing kits, we are told a major drop will take place on monday. What do you know about that . We are waiting to hear from our site team because the site reopens today soi team because the site reopens today so i will speak to them later to see if they have arrived. In terms of the group being ready, we have already removed soft coverings from floors and the room and got the required testing station set up so anticipate they will be here on time and we plan to Start Testing year 11 and we plan to Start Testing year 11 and 13 on friday of the following week. Where have your volunteers come from and what sort of conversations have you had with them because you do not necessarily know how long you will need them for . Im struggling to hear a little bit but i think you are talking about parens and consent. About the volunteers you are relying on. We put messages out to our School Community before we broke up, we are lucky we have quite a numberof we broke up, we are lucky we have quite a number of part time members of Teaching Staff and pastoral staff, most of whom offered additional days so they are already dbs charge so that puts us in a fortunate position to meet that need, we also had ex members of staff who will need to be dbs checked but they are able to join us. Can you pick up on responsibilities because you has a head teacher have a responsibility for student and staff safety and there are questions about white teachers will not get access to the vaccine at the earliest possible stages, also about ppe. What can you tell us about your concerns over your staff . I share those, it seems highly frustrating that we are co nsta ntly highly frustrating that we are constantly being told by the government that keeping children in school is a National Priority and we are school is a National Priority and we a re key school is a National Priority and we are key workers yet apparently we dont qualify along with other key workers to get early access to the vaccine, it seems another common decision that could help allay the fears and increase the safety of staff and this is in primary and secondary so i represent 70 head teachers but primary head teachers are facing the same challenges, infection rates are rising in primary as well so this is about the safety of all the community. Question for both of you, it was such an intense year, did you get anything of a break over christmas . Idid, what anything of a break over christmas . I did, what we did as a Leadership Team was we had planned the dates we would work and those in which we would work and those in which we would have no contact soap all of us took a break of about three or four days where we got some downtime. What about you, dave . Very similar, its just been the nature of the year under 1. 1 would like to make is that we as teachers have always appreciated the fact ourjobs had been safe during this and other people have not been as fortunate so just get with it. Good to catch up with you both. We wish you well in what will be a challenging patch. A final check in with chris and i look at the weather. We have been talking about snow this morning and this is our latest picture from the darlington area, it shows about 4 or 5 centimetres here, that snow has been working its way from eastern scotland, from the fife area a cross from eastern scotland, from the fife area across east lothian and the Scottish Borders and now into north east england, we could see five centimetres falling in these areas this morning with icy stretches but even away from that area with temperatures well below freezing there could be icy stretches anywhere for a time. This as we go through the day, sunshine and showers but that snow will continue to work southwards across yorkshire and lincolnshire, towards the coast more rain and sleet, snow showers for northern scotland, mostly rain in wales, there is will drift into South West England, and along with Northern Ireland and western scotland bright with some sunshine late on. Overnight tonight showers will be widespread across eastern scotland and england with clearer skies further north west, across west scotland and Northern Ireland we will see the lowest overnight temperatures, perhaps down to minus eight degrees. This tomorrow is another cold day, the wind changed direction, coming from a more north east direction but the feel of the weather will not change and it will be cold again. Showers widespread across the scotland and Eastern England, more rain around the coast but inland you could see more sleet and snow and maybe some showers merged together in parts of kent, the best dry weather and sunshine, a drier date for northern scotla nd sunshine, a drier date for northern scotland but even with the sunshine it stays cold, temperatures for six celsius. Next week this area of High Pressure around scandinavia will not move anytime soon so we will get that cold north easterly showers widespread across the scotland and Eastern England and some of those showers will probably merge to give longer spells of rain into portions of kent, the best dry weather across north west areas, after that cold and frosty start to the day, another chilly one. Deeper into the week it will stay cold with temperatures below normal for the time of year but it will not be a dry week, we will see showers to start the week across eastern scotland and england and we may see some areas of snow developing as the week goes by, maybe not just over the developing as the week goes by, maybe notjust over the hills. Have a nice weekend, chris, thank you very much. Employers in all sectors have been cutting hundreds of thousands of jobs, as the economy struggles against covid 19 leaving an estimated 1. 7 Million People out of work. Since the pandemic started in march, weve been speaking to many job hunters about their experiences of looking for work. Our Business Correspondent sarah corker has been to catch up with a few of them. Three people who all lost theirjobs because of the pandemic. Olympia, rebecca and heather were facing the toughestjobs market for a generation. Weve got no money coming in, well survive as long as we can. I first met olympia and herfamily back in may. She was touring as part of a circus troupe when the first lockdown restrictions came in and they were stranded on morecambe seafront for months. With no money coming in, it was a real struggle. Its fear. Fear that. That i might not ever be able to do what i love again, which is perform, in the circus, because we might not recover. Since then, things have got better. Olympias moved in with her mum in rotherham to save money, and wait until they re allowed to perform again. Financially its been a big strain. Its been massive. Like i say, we normally work from february to november, so about 85 90 of our shows were just cancelled or stopped or postponed until next year. Five months on morecambe prom, relying on the food bank to feed you guys. What was that experience like . It was really hard. Coming to terms with the fact that i had to rely on other people to eat and to live. In west yorkshire, rebecca was finding competition forjobs fierce. How many roles have you applied for . I dont think i could possibly tell you. Shed worked in communications at a high street bank for a decade when she was made redunant in the summer. With every application that goes out the diary, it does kind of chip away at your confidence and how you feel. Its already dog eat dog. Its only going to get worse. Three months on, shes now working for a shed company. And its been really busy, hasnt it . Its completely booming at the moment, the shed industry, believe it or not. Its a new world for me, its a million miles away from banking. Whats it like after so many months not working, having a regular wage aagain . It was a massive confidence boost. Theres no shame in saying that although, yes, you have your friends and family and things, when you have yourjob, you feel like you have purpose. It felt like i had purpose again. Financially, things are going to get better for me. Some of those in their 505 and 605, like heatherfrom presswich near manchester, felt they were being overlooked. The best one is youre overqualified, which doesnt make any sense to me, because if youre qualified to this level then you can do anyjob up until that level. So being overqualified doesnt mean a thing, except its another way of saying youre too old. Heather is still on the job hunt but enjoying having more time exercising in the local park. Did you think it would take this long and it would be this hard . Um, yeah, basically. You know, ive been here before, in much better times. There are obviously a lot more people unemployed, and because theres more people unemployed, there are fewerjobs at the moment because a lot of people are on furlough still. But she is determined to get back into work. I dont relax. Im not a relaxed sort of person, i cant do nothing. So for some, the search for work continues. But the arrival of an effective vaccine has brought renewed optimism for 2021. Sarah corker, bbc news. We wish them ahead. It has gone 9 50am. And, secondly, doing what i could with our defences to save our property. Lets stick with the great outdoors. Many of us have been spending more time conecting with nature over the past few months and its resulted in some exciting wildlife sightings. The Wildlife Trust has compiled a list of their favourite marine pictures for 2020, featuring the best sights in uk waters, captured both by experts and members of the public. Lets take a look at some of the best footage. Just gorgeous. Were joined now by bex lynam who works for the Wildlife Trusts. Its been one of those accidental positives of last year that we have been getting out and about more and seeing whats been under our noses all along. Absolutely, i think 2020 was such a difficult year for eve ryo ne was such a difficult year for everyone but has shown us the value of nature and taking care of our mental and physical well being. More people than ever have been getting out and enjoying our Natural Environment and as a consequence had been seeing more wildlife on our uk coast. You yourself had a sighting ofa minky coast. You yourself had a sighting of a minky well, tell us about that. More than one minke whale, we have seen plenty of them this year. We know that their population visits the yorkshire coast every year, between july and august and the yorkshire coast every year, betweenjuly and august and this year has been no exception except this year it appears from the information collected that they have come further inshore which meant you didnt have to be on about to see them, you could stand on the cliffs and see them from land which has been fantastic and thats what many people have done. Man bowing for people have done. Man bowing for people who perhaps havent experienced wildlife like that on our coast. Absolutely, who would think you can see these nine metre giants off our coast . Minke whales are the most spectacular site, when you see them on the water its just a fraction of these ocean giants but most people dont think you can see whales and dolphins in uk seas but we have plenty to be seen in our seeds and that includes some of the marine worlds biggest animals, you can go fora marine worlds biggest animals, you can go for a walk on the yorkshire coastline and other areas, a bit of patience and a pair of binoculars and you might see something spectacular. You said the sightings we re spectacular. You said the sightings were a combination of two things, we are out door more but there are also more of them around. We think for some of the species we have talked about in the marine review are increasing in number, we know our wildlife is under a lot of pressure so to see some populations increase is fantastic, though the other side of things is there is more of us about on the coastline, more of us watching so more of us reporting what we seek which is fantastic, all that information is useful to researchers and people like myself trying to do our best for wildlife and nature our activities are managed around it to protect it. Thank you, bex lynam, you have cheered me up this morning. The amazing pictures. Thats all from us today. Join us again tomorrow from six oclock. Goodbye. This is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. Pressure grows to shut more schools. A Teaching Union demands a two week closures of all primaries and secondaries in england. A new warning over hospitals in parts of the uk. The president of the Royal College of physicians says some are now facing a worse situation than at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic. India begins a nation wide mock drill to test its preparedness for mass immunisation against covid 19. The us Senate Delivers a rebuke to donald trump in the final days of his presidency, over riding his veto of a defence bill.
