People taking exercise. Good morning. Coronavirus is still biting hard on town centre trade. Hospitality revenue is down. Im looking at what happens if workers arent sitting back at their desks soon . Good morning. The benefits of not being at the olympics tom daley gives us his positive spin on spending time away from the pool during lockdown. Good morning. Yesterday many of us had a good day of winter, friday will be a good day of summer. I have all of the details later in the programme. Good morning to you. Its tuesday, the 28th ofjuly. The government is facing growing criticism of its decision to include the balearic and Canary Islands in its advice to avoid all but essential travel to spain. Travel Companies Say theyre deeply disappointed by the announcement, because the islands have not been affected by the surge in cases of coronavirus seen in parts of the mainland. We can get more now from keith doyle, who is live at gatwick for us. So many peoples plans are having to change. Morning, keith, whats the latest . Good morning. This is usually peak Holiday Season for britons travelling to spain, 18 million took spanish holidays last year. Of course things are very different this year. This morning at Gatwick Airport there are plenty of passengers arriving to go off on holidays, many of them going off to spain. So clearly they have decided that they are going to carry on with their holidays. But with the new government advice and quarantine, it means many spanish holidays have been curtailed or cancelled. Britains decision to extend its advice against non essential travel to all of spain dominated the spanish news bulletins. The official advice from the British Government now includes the balearic and ca nary islands. Anyone returning to the uk from anywhere within spain will have to self quarantine for 14 days. Thousands of britons have booked to go on or are already on spanish beaches. But the requirement to self isolate when they return has caused anxiety and confusion. The poulson family should have been unpacking their suitcases in spain, but they cancelled their holiday as they couldnt take more time off work. Some people might think, well, were going to go, damn it all. Well come back and have another two weeks off work. but me and the wife just couldnt do that to our employers. The spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said britains decision to impose a two week quarantine on everyone arriving from spain was unjust, and that the popular tourist islands where coronavirus cases are low should be exempt from the uk quarantine. Translation take the case of the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, the regions of valencia and andalucia, which i insist have a cumulative instance of the virus inferior to that registered right now in the united kingdom. It will be safer to be in those destinations than in the united kingdom. Mr sanchez said he was hoping to convince the British Government to rethink its strategy. Thats too late forjet2. Com passengers, as the airline has suspended flights to the canaries and the balearics, as well as mainland spain this morning until august 16. It has also suspended flights to faro in portugal. Flights home to the uk will operate today. It says it has taken the decision because of the governments updated advice. The Spanish Government is hoping air bridges allowing quarantine free travel between the uk and Spanish Islands can be set up. Discussions on that are taking place. Those discussions wont have jet2. Com passengers due to fly to spain today. Seeing those slides will not be operating. Anyone in spain today and due to fly back with jet2. Com, those flights will operate. The airline says it will give more information on what is going to happen over the next few days later today. Clearly, a lot of uncertainty there. 2e are ready cancelled holidays, other airlines are operating, but this is a fast moving and changing situation. So anyone who is due to take any place in the near future should really contact the airline and keep an eye on those websites. On refunds and insurance, because the official government advice is against all but essential travel, refunds and re bookings should be available. But a word of warning, to anyone who chooses to trouble against that government advice, any insurance policy may not be valid . So clearly there is a lot of uncertainty. This is not really going to be the relaxing spanish holiday and he had hoped for. Keith, thank you very much indeed. We will have more of course, from you, later as well. Our Political Correspondent chris mason joins us now chris, morning. The government are having to juggle looking their Decision Making and the reaction of british holiday makers wanting to get away. Yeah, thats exactly it. Good morning to you. Number 10 making the case and emphasising no Travellers Rest three in a pandemic. The waiter is working, a couple of organisations, Public Health england and the joint organisations, Public Health england and thejoint biosecurity centre, it is theirjob to pour over the data that comes in every day to try and work out where there might be spiked developing, where might be risky. Pass on that data to ministers who have to make a decision, and that is what happened on saturday, as far as spain is concerned. But a really tricky one, this, ministers, because on the one hand they want to be seen to be providing some sense of optimism, some sense we be heading slowly back towards normality, and yes of course the risk is still there. They know that this is crippling for an industry, the travel industry that has had a particularly tough time in recent months, and the whole point of going on holidays is to try and leave things behind, leave the stresses of home behind and not have to worry. And of course with this hanging over anyone contemplating foreign travel, it removes some of that sense of being able to escape and being able to forget what is going on at home. Lots of conversations are continuing here, down, at westminster, about how things may change. We saw as far as the others were concerned last night, there are conversations going on about quarantine. Could that potentially be restricted, be limited a little bit . No announcement yet, but as with all of this, there is never going to be an end point. There will always be the prospect another thing will change soon. Exactly. Chris, thank you for the moment. And we will be putting some of those questions and queries to the Government Housing minister, simon clarke, who will be here at 7 30am this morning. And in related news. Mps have criticised the way the Foreign Office handled the repatriation of more than a million britons at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. In a report, the Foreign Affairs Committee Said the response was too slow, communications were inadequate and there was too much reliance on commercial flights. Heres our diplomatic correspondent, james landale. When knockdown began in march, some 1. 3 million britons were travelling the world. The government advise them to return in a massive battery asian. But for a lot of people, it wasnt easy. Many countries shut their airports, close their borders and band internal travel. The Foreign Affairs minister said many fco staff went above and beyond to help people get home in extremely difficult circumstances. But the mp said too many uk citizens were not provided with the support that they should reasonably expect to receive from the Foreign Office. The mps said communications were poor, with many britons unable to access information and others not treated with empathy or compassion. They urged the Foreign Office to improve its communication methods and its contingency plans. The Committee Chairman said there were clear failings in the Foreign Office response. The answer phones were not able to be fixed in embassies and could not be done remotely. So they we re could not be done remotely. So they were giving out mistaken messages, sometimes we found social media was not being used appropriately, and we could have seen many more people informed much more accurately, earlier. So we will be giving a very, very close eye on how the Foreign Office handles this latest round of emergencies in spain. The Foreign Office spokesman said it had taken Foreign Office spokesman said it had ta ken unprecedented steps Foreign Office spokesman said it had taken unprecedented steps to help people and it had not been realistic to charter more flights. James landale, bbc news. A range of measures to get people cycling and walking in england have been announced by the government. Promising thousands of miles of cycle lanes, changes to the highway code and bikes being made available through the nhs as part of a £2 billion investment announced earlier this year. A delayed scheme offering £50 vouchers towards the cost of fixing a bike will also go live today. After weeks in court about his personal relationship, johnny depps trial is due to begin today a our end today, he is suing the Sun Newspaper for libel over a 2018 article which labelled him a life beater does make life beater, this is following allegations from his ex wife, amber heard. Ajudgement is expected later this year. You might remember last year when we featured 15 year old jayden ashman, who won a whopping 1 million blank video game fortnite at the fortnight woke up. At the time he promised his mum he would buy her a house and here he is, hes done it fortnite world cup. Its a really great feeling to buy the house and keep my word to my mum. Although stresses she doesnt have any more. I dont know, its just a nice feeling. Amazing absolutely amazing. Well done. To all of those parents who think their children are wasting their time. |j feel children are wasting their time. feel bad about having that exact conversation with my two kids. Just turn that off. Lets return to our top story now. Holidaymakers have been left with more questions than answers after the government changed its foreign travel advice again last night. Many tourists will be wondering what they should do next. Our Consumer Affairs correspondent sarah corker has been looking at some of the most frequently asked questions, and searching for some answers. For those dreaming of a holloway getaway the summer, there is still plenty of questions. Should i cancel my holiday to spain, and will i get my holiday to spain, and will i get my money back . The Foreign Office is advising against all non essential travel to spain, and that now includes the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands lie majorca and a beeper, so anyone coming back from spain and its islands will have two currency in, and people whose lives have been cancelled are supposed to get a refund within two weeks. Tour operators have cancelled holidays to mainland spain, while some airlines including British Airways and easyj et a re including British Airways and easyjet are continuing with their Programme Updates to the country. So, what does this mean for my insurance . Travelling against Foreign Office advice will invalidate your policy. If you are already in spain when the government advised change, you should be covered and so we got home. If in doubt, check with your insurers. Covered and so we got home. If in doubt, check with your insurersm you are booking, i think you are booking a european holiday, which many of us are, and there is pent up demand, if you are concerned about Foreign Office advised change, which is always possible that good, book a package holiday. If you do that, if the advice changes when you are due to be travelling, then the Tour Operator will let you go later in the year when the situation improves, go to another country, or have your money back, that is the best way to protect yourself. have your money back, that is the best way to protect yourself. I get paid if best way to protect yourself. I get paid if i have to quarantine . It will depend on individual employers. If you can work from home, then you can get paid as normal. But if you cant, then you are not automatically entitled to statutory sick pay of £95 85 a week. There are, though, other options. The other options are possibly an extended period of annual leave, which would be paid, alternatively, may be a mutually agreed period of unpaid leave, which would be paid. So is dependent on what is agreed between both parties. As the virus continues to circulate, changes to policies are inevitable. And the governments advised could also again with very little notice for holidaymakers. Sarah corker, bbc news at manchester airport. So, i imagine this morning a lot of people are thinking, what are you going to do . Are you going to book a holiday, would go ahead . We would love to hear from you and your stories, what are your questions as well . We will be speaking to a member of the government a little bit later. You can e mail us at bbcbrea kfast bbc. Co. Uk and share your thoughts with other viewers on our facebook page. And you can tweet about todays stories using the hashtag bbcbreakfast. Well try and gather as many others as we can later on. Its one of those days there are lots of questions to which we do not necessarily know the answer of as yet. We will try and get some. Hopefully we will try and get to the bottom of some of that for you today. So we have a look at the papers as well . Shall we . Quarantine for travellers returning from spain, including the Balearic Islands, continues to dominate the headlines. Millions of Summer Holidays ruined is the daily expresss take. It says the government has told anyone travelling abroad now that they do so at their own risk. The Daily Telegraph claims that the government is hoping to announce plans to cut quarantine to ten days for those who test negative for the virus. The metro reports that only one person has been fined by police for breaching the requirement to self isolate after arriving from abroad. It says separate figures from the uk border force show that as of 10 july, the agency had penalised only three people over quarantine. El pais, one of spains largest news outlets, says the quarantine rules spell disaster for the spanish tourism industry. They that right . Have i said that right . Shall we have a quick look at the inside pages . You go first. Chocolate drops. I love the way you went straight for those. Tesla are credited with revolutionising the world of electric cars. One of their designers has actually turned his attention to the perfect shape for a chocolate chip, because the classic teardrop shape has caused chefs issues for decades, apparently. What, making it . It doesnt melt properly. So they have been trying to redesign the chocolate chip to an effective shape that melts better. And this is what he has come up with. Have a look at this. Sort of like a flattened diamond. What they are saying is what you do with this is that. I will get this bit. It looks like a flattened diamond with a faceted pyramid shape and two thin edges tapering to ends. It melts more quickly on the palate so when you put a dandelion ship on your tongue, the chiselled edges warm to melt nearly instantly chip. That is the perfect shape for a chocolate chip, and thank you to remy who has come up with that. This is from the inside of the mail, and it is about whether people are going back to work. What it does in the mail, they have done an audit and more than 70 firms, dozens dont have a plan to return to offices within two months. Rbs currently has 40,000 staff working from home and 10,000 staff in branches and offices, and most are not being expected to return to the office until next year. Ernst young, 11,200 office staff. They have consulted them and offices will reopen from september seven, but on a reduced capacity basis. Nina is talking about this later, but there isa talking about this later, but there is a real sense that many people will not be going back to work, or at least at the office, for some long time. I think what nina is talking about is the effect on the economy of that as well. talking about is the effect on the economy of that as well. I wanted to give a shout out to this fella in the daily mail. Roy has worked 13,416 days in a row in his shop and he is finally calling it a day. He bought the place in 1982 and has worked every day since, not taking a day off. He has been open throughout lockdown when he has been able to, and he has finally decided that he is going to take a break, a well deserved break, as well. is going to take a break, a welldeserved break, as well. I will give you a little note of optimism, because so many of us will be spending holidays in the uk. I have just come back from the lake district, and look at this. Absolutely beautiful. Storm clouds giving holiday makers of you shortly after sunrise yesterday morning. Carol will have the weather shortly but that is a view that lots of us will be getting used to. Certainly lots of people in the lake district, some of them going up there for the day to do large walks, long walks, beautiful walks. I have chickens and a quick dog. Nandos, the restaurant chain, is feeding its chickens on insects and algae in an attempt to reduce Carbon Emissions. Chicken feed is the second biggest contributor to deforestation after the beef industry so it is a trial plan to try and get zero Carbon Emissions and reduce their carbon footprint. And this one is called dogzilla, i do like a big dog. Have a look at this. This is a russian bear dog, owned by nigel carver. 14 stone, and 6 foot to when it stands up stone, and 6 foot to when it stands up like that, outgrowing the small cottage where nigel lives with his partner, linda, who is 60 years old. And nigel is 63, in case you are interested. Just giving you some additional detail there. They live in derbyshire and the dog needs six miles of walks every single day. And we we re miles of walks every single day. And we were talking just about people going back to work and more places are expected to open up next month. Which could be crucial for the uks sandwich shops and cafes, which rely on Office Workers. Nina is looking into this one for us today. Who doesnt love a lunchtime buttie . It might seem a bit early to be talking lunchtime butties, but Office Lunches are big business. There is a big drive from government to support the Hospitality Industry at the moment, and from this weekend, to get back in to offices where it is safe. But wander round your city or town centre later and youll see things are still very different. Numbers out today from the ukhospitality trade body show just how bad things were from april to june. Sales were down by nearly 90 . That meant, between restaurants, bars, cafes and delis, almost £30 billion was lost in revenue. Things are improving under the unlock. In the week up to 12july, spending in Food Service Businesses was at 50 of pre covid levels. Dig into the details, though, and the majority of that comes from people going out for dinner, not lunch. In fact, injune, weekday eating out visits from uk workers was very low just 16 of normal, those numbers already having a big impact on lives. Ssp, which owns brands like upper crust that operate in train stations and airports, are cutting 5,000 jobs. Pret a manger is closing 30 stores, and that could impact another 1,000 jobs. From 1 august, more workplaces will begin allowing employees back in to the office, and that is crucial for lunchtime trade. Yesterday i chatted to a chippy owner who has been open for eight years, and the manager of a greek deli. The only way this business survives is through the offices and through the shopping visits. At the moment, we are surviving, which is better than most. How is it now . Lunchtime is 10 . Iam than most. How is it now . Lunchtime is 10 . I am looking for the shirts and ties, the suits. These other people, these are the Office People. Iam people, these are the Office People. I am looking outside and i am seeing shoppers and people going wonders or going for drinks, but in terms of Actual Office people, huge concern, there is no doubt. Well, if it continues like this, and the workers dont come, we willjust close down. Simple as that. Simple as. Perhaps we get to january and we will have to close down. The government is encouraging workers to get back into city centres like this. How high are the stakes if that doesnt happen soon . Catastrophic is probably the word to use, yes. We are 99 relying on the Office People coming in, for sandwiches, coffees. There is no way we would survive paying people to stay here. So. It is such a precarious time for those businesses i was speaking to in manchester yesterday. What those businesses need is an immediate bounce back, but predictions are that the Food Service Market wont be back at pre covid levels until 2023. Some businesses are adapting, opening longer and at weekends to make up for lunchtime losses. The deli i was at yesterday is opening in the evenings. Greggs the baker is looking at longer Opening Hours and possibly moving locations. Well have the latest results from greggs at 7 00am this morning, then i will speak to the boss at 7 45am. As you were just saying, louise, google in the newspapers is the latest Big Organisation to say you are not coming back to your offices for another year. So hundreds of thousands of workers in the uk, and obviously this is a massive company. Lockdown has meant many of us have started using video calls to communicate and students have been taking lots of their lessons online. But not everybody feels comfortable with the format, and on screen conversations can be particularly challenging for people with speech difficulties, as sally hurst reports. 16 year old thomas has spent lockdown perfecting his basketball skills with his siblings, and like School Students everywhere, getting to grips with online learning. School Students everywhere, getting to grips with online learning. I am looking to go into science and do astrophysics or plant science. I really love the David Attenborough documentaries and brian cox, so they area real. Documentaries and brian cox, so they are a real. They are a real offer me. But his stammer makes communicating online difficult. The challenge i face the video calls is the. The unmuting on my microphone with the Co Ordination of my brain and my mouth to speak, and also to make sure that people i dont interrupt people. It is a common problem for children and young people with speech difficulties. So when the way we communicate suddenly changed, when lockdown happened, we suddenly were only able to communicate on video, and that has allowed us to stay in touch, which is fantastic, but it does present some challenges for people who have communication difficulties. And one of those is the fact that it only relies on your face and sometimes only your voice, and you lose a lot of the other ways we communicate, using our bodies and our hands. And so using our bodies and our hands. And so when you stammer, the anxiety around that can be more difficult. It is part of you, and you dont need to worry, and you are joining a very special group of people who have succeeded greatly, like, for example, Sir Winston Churchill and ed sheeran, stormzy and emily blunt. Famous faces who have embraced their stammer and followed their passions, just like thomas. That was sally hurst reporting, and well be bringing you more on this story after 8 30am, when well be catching up with musharaf asghar. Tell us if you have had issues as well. You may remember Musharaf Ashgar from the educating yorkshire series, which documented how he overcame his stammer. It was a brilliant bit of telly, that, you remember at the end when he addressed his classmates and schoolmates . You are watching bbc breakfast. Still to come well hear from tom daley about swapping olympic training for lockdown life with his husband, toddler and mum. That interview is coming up shortly, and well also be bringing you the latest news and weather. Now lets get the weather, with carol. That looks glorious, carol. Good morning. Good morning, both, good morning. Good morning, both, good morning to you as well. You are quite right, what a beautiful weather watch a picture from North Tyneside this morning and another one from northamptonshire. Again you can see a lovely start to the day. Now, todays forecast is mixed. We are looking at sunshine and showers with some rain across the far north east of scotland, and it is a windy day. Strong to gale force winds, actually, around orkney. But for the rest of us, not that strong but still noticeable and breezy across southern areas. Low pressure that brought us all the rain yesterday starting to pull away towards the north east. So this is where we have got the rain this morning and also the strongest winds, and we have also got a lot of showers coming in on that north westerly wind across western areas, especially scotland, Northern Ireland and north west england. But because of the strength of the wind, some of those will make it over to the east and the south east. But it will be short lived because the wind will be short lived because the wind will whip them through quite quickly. Temperature wise, well, were looking at highs into the low 20s. But these are the wind strengths, so the temperature will be tempered, of course, by the wind. Despite what you can see here, it will feel a bit cooler. Through this evening and overnight, the low pressure starts to pull away into the north sea, taking the rain with it. They will still be a bit of cloud left. The winds will ease a touch on the north, there will still bea touch on the north, there will still be a few showers, but we have a transient ridge of High Pressure building across us. That will kill off many of the showers and it will bea off many of the showers and it will be a fairly quiet night, with clear skies and areas of cloud. Where we have the clear skies in rural areas, temperatures will be lower than this. These temperatures indicate what you can expect in towns and cities. So tomorrow, here is our transient ridge of High Pressure. If you look at the distinct lack of isobars, tells you it is not going to be nearly as windy as it was yesterday or today, but there is a weather front waiting in the winds. So tomorrow, still a bit of cloud across the far north and east of scotland, with some showers. Some of those showers across the north west might prove to be heavy at times, but a lot of dry weather. We will start off with some sunshine in england and wales, but as our weather fronts approach from the west, introducing later on some rain into Northern Ireland and parts of wales, the cloud will build, turning the sunshine hazy, and it will be a cloudier end of the day. Whereas in scotla nd cloudier end of the day. Whereas in scotland and Northern England we will start off on a cloudier note and we will end up in sunshine and temperatures between 12 and 23. Through thursday our weather front brings the rain across scotland. Another weather front coming across Northern Ireland later on friday. But look at the isobars. We are dragging in some Continental Air, and that is going to be much warmer or hotterfor us and that is going to be much warmer or hotter for us depending and that is going to be much warmer or hotterfor us depending on and that is going to be much warmer or hotter for us depending on where we are. We have all ambers returning to the charts. Dont forget we have a weather front returning to the west, that will introduce some rain across Northern Ireland, thundery rain, actually, so that is why your temperatures will be that bit lower. 21 degrees in belfast in the top ten picture of 32. I will have more weather in half an hour. Top temperature. Hello, this is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Its 6 30am. Well bring you all the latest news and sport in a moment, but also on breakfast this morning. Cycling on prescription and bikes available from your gp olympic champion Chris Boardman will be joining us to discuss the governments big plan to get england cycling. Well be asking whats next for holidaymakers hoping to travel abroad this summer, after the government changed its foreign travel advice again last night. Well hear from the twin tv doctors who were making a documentary about life on the front line when one of them was struck down with covid 19. Good morning. Heres a summary of todays main stories from bbc news ministers are facing growing criticism after extending their advice against non essential visits to mainland spain, to the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. The guidance had initially excluded any restrictions to travel to ireland like majorca, ids and tenerife, but that was changed last night to islands like majorca and ibiza. The thinking behind travel advice . We can speak to one of our regular gps, dr william bird, who joins us from reading. It is the subject that has lots of people planning holidays, thinking about holidays this morning, what are your thoughts from what the government has said on the advice over the last 4 48 hours . Thank you very much. It has been a bit confusing. 24 48 hours stop you can see the main area in spain, mainland spain, that is where the rates have gone up. And the rates have been going up sincejuly eight, so they were doing very, very well, and it is gradually picking up, sorted a, 27, now 35. But from what we can tell, and we cant really see the evidence. The islands themselves dont seem to be affected so badly. So there must be a reason why the islands are now included. But certainly the rate and likewise in france, things have been picking up as well. So these are worrying signs that over Continental Europe we are starting to see a second rise of the virus. Is it better . I suppose it is frustrating, isnt it, for those who felt it was ok to book a foreign trip, to find out they cannot go or will have to quarantine when they come back. But i suppose it is that balance between being on the safe side and trying to govern what happens with this virus, which has com pletely happens with this virus, which has completely changed the way we live this year. Its incredibly difficult. And of course, if you book your holidays and you had to go back to work and now you have two weeks quarantine, its really unsettling, very difficult. So it is a balance. Ithink unsettling, very difficult. So it is a balance. I think it is looking at where the rates are so much higher than the uk or rising, and the trouble is, a lot of the information we are getting back made have a slight delay, rate of rise is probably the most important when you are looking at which countries you should be worried about. If there is this delay in the reporting of testing and then a massive rise going up, we may already be a week or two behind the curve, and that is what they will be looking out, looking at that rate. Then it is a risk. You know, if you do go abroad and you go to a hotel and you know there are no areas around which have got any of the virus, its going to be very, very frustrating to then feel when you come back to the uk, when we still clearly have quite a high rate, but were going to see this time and time again over the next few months as we continue to be in the pandemic. We must not forget that we are still in this pandemic, there are lots of places where the rates are still rising, we are nowhere near at the peak throughout the world. And then in the autumn, we are almost certainly going to see a rise in this country and other countries as we approach winter. And the weather starts to make an impact on the virus. We are seeing it in here at the moment, but we are obviously going to be seeing it as the colder temperatures make it much, much more very loud. Then hopefully as we come into spring of next year, things will start to come down much more virulent. Next year, things will start to come down much more virulent. Can i ask you about this question a around quarantine densely coming down from 14 to ten days . We know the virus usually, once you have had it, it can have a very variable incubation rate from literally a day or two due up to a week, and therefore, ten days does probably include 99 of people who would get it. Two weeks is quite a long time. But most people, if they are going to get it, would get between 4 5 days, as i think ten days does seem to include it, and it may be brought down a little bit but that would start to see more patients who have got the symptoms delayed a little bit longer. So that is good news, obviously, 14 10, but bring it down further and you will miss those people with a long incubation period. And the government has been talking this week about the health bush. I wonder what your feelings we re bush. I wonder what your feelings were on that as well . Yesterday we we re were on that as well . Yesterday we were talking about obesity and a number of measures with regards to that. Today it is about exercise and pushing more of us to get out and cycle in england . I am very excited. I have been pushing for physical activity for the last 30 years, and suddenly there is this massive bush from government. And, you know, i cant believe it. Its been such an amazing few days. We have seen all of his policies coming out and, however, i have been in this game a long, long time, and you can get a flash in the pan, a big surge, eve ryo ne flash in the pan, a big surge, everyone is fascinated and then it fades away. So when you are dealing with cycling and with walking, and we have to remember, the rates of walking and cycling are about five times more people to walk to work than cycle to work. Lets not forget walking. Walking is still very, very important in keeping people active. But when you are doing cycling, there are four things you have to deal with. One of them is getting the bikes, which is what boris is saying, lets get people to get back to the bikes can give them vouchers to the bikes can give them vouchers to be able to repair them. You have to be able to repair them. You have to train people. A lot of people have forgotten how to ride a bike. You may have asked on it when you attend and you havent done it for the last 30 40 years. Last done it. Then, safety. You need roads and cycleways all built up. That could ta ke cycleways all built up. That could take a long time, since the 1960s, and of course lay ahead, but they need to do it. And then the campaign to say do it. You know, dont get the car, we get into this habit of getting into a car. Obviously, when the weather is bad it makes it more difficult, if we can get those four campaigns, not just the difficult, if we can get those four campaigns, notjust the one bit, the bikes, lets get all four together, and then sustain it every year with more campaigns, more pushing, getting the infrastructure right, and then we will make a massive difference. And lets try and be the kind of envy of the world and have obesity rates are starting to come down. But lets keep this going through a list another five years, every year. Its nice to speak to you about a subject you are clearly passionate about. Doctor william bird, thank you. Are you on your bike today . You have any plans . My bike today . You have any plans . My bike isjust out bike today . You have any plans . My bike is just out there. So, bike today . You have any plans . My bike isjust out there. So, yes, i will definitely try and use it today. Good to talk to you. Thank you very much. Thank you let you mixa you very much. Thank you let you mix a good point about getting back on your bike after decades, you think it would be easy, but it is not necessarily always a good idea . You see make you would be ok. Yeah, im all right. And we were talking we are talking to chris about that in a moment. But first, some sport news. Jurgen klopp has been named manager of the year by the League Managers association. He of course led liverpool to their First League Title in 30 years. His win was announced by the great Manchester United manager sir Alex Ferguson who revealed that klopp had rung him as 3 30am in the morning to tell him that liverpool had won the league. Sir alex said he forgave klopp and praised his achievements. Itll be at least a year before football in england is played in front of full stadiums. Thats according to the chair of the Governments Committee on the return of elite sports. The first test events with smaller crowds are being held at cricket, horse racing and snooker events this week. But Professor James calder says capacity crowds are still some way off and it could take even longer if chanting is proved to increase the spread of coronavirus. Now, will we get some cricket today after a complete washout at old trafford yesterday . The forecast looks much better this morning. England need to take eight wickets to win the test and series. If stuart broad takes one of them, he will become only the second englishman to reach the milestone of 500 test wickets. Now, were it not for the pandemic, today wouldve been the fourth day of the tokyo 2020 olympics. It wouldve also been tom daleys fourth games, his first was as a 14 year old in beijing. At the rio games, tom failed to make the final in his main event one of the toughest days of his career, he says but he told me a chance to take a break from the pool has put things in perspective. Nothing shy of perfect. Yes, it is that is going to be gold for tom daley yes have you dwelled are the fact that, you know, you should have been competing, this should be the games . Itsjust a weird situation, i think, for everyone right now. To be honest, the fact it has been postponed a year and the fa ct has been postponed a year and the fact that everything was, like a ground to a halt has almost given me a sense of perspective on what actually matters most. And, you know, life can be so fleeting, if you like. So, to get an extra bonus year and restart an olympic year, it makes you really appreciate how lucky athletes are to do what we love every single day. lucky athletes are to do what we love every single day. I think the pandemic has given us all that perspective, really. What has later a knockdown been for you . In a london flat with a toddler, it must have been pretty hectic . It was, it was, but you know, everything has a silver lining, right . Igot was, but you know, everything has a silver lining, right . I got to spend so much extra time on my son, with my mum because she was in lockdown with us as well and my husband. So being able to spend the extra time together, seeing robbie learn all of his colours, being able to count, the alphabet, just to see him develop because in a normal year would have been travelling here, there and everywhere for competitions, and encamped them as a getting that extra time with him is something i am so grateful for and is so special. This kind of period of time out of the pool i thing for me is only really a benefit. I have been able to rest my body, i have been able to rest my body, i have been able to rest my mind, i have been able to rest my mind, i have been able to not hit the water at 35 miles an hourand been able to not hit the water at 35 miles an hour and after my shoulders and back and all that kind of stuff. So yes, its been a long time, but its been a long time for everyone. I have been taking it day by day and im excited to get back in the water. They royal, the first time, the home favourite one of those memories view of the london games . The london 2012 games you like a blur. Its hard to look back and remember. When i see video footage of things like, oh, yeah, i remember that. Whereas if i were sitting back now, i couldnt really file too many stories to you. Its so funny how adrenaline does that. Oh, lovely well done goodness, that is there. World championship bronze, olympic place secured, job done. You are heading towards your fourth games. It was your dadmy dream as well for you to get to the olympics. Your first one, didnt get to see you compete in london because he died of cancer before then. You know, going into a fourth games, do you think you would have even have dared to dream . To be honest, my dad was so kind, gentle, caring, supportive, like, he was there to support me in any of my dreams. And without ever, ever putting any pressure on me to go and do it was that if i said i didnt want to go to training today, ididnt go didnt want to go to training today, i didnt go to training that day. If isaidi i didnt go to training that day. If i said i was, like, i didnt go to training that day. If isaid i was, like, if i didnt go to training that day. If i said i was, like, if i was having about training session, he wouldnt, like, without even saying anything to me, we would go and get ice cream. Little things like that, he was just so supportive, patient, and, you know, he would do anything for his family. And i think that is just a message for everyone, is that never take your family for granted at any moment, because life is too short for that. This year is all about the process. Not getting too worried about what the outcome is going to be, enjoying the process, working hard, arriving into tokyo with no regrets, standing on the diving board and knowing i have done every single thing in my power to do the best i can today and what will be will be. Of course, it would be great to do really well, but i can only do what i can do and the rest will be history. And you know what . I asked him whether the tokyo games will be his final games. I dont think it will be he is talking about coming down from that any department to do the springboard at three metres, which is much less hard, much less on your body so he could get a few more games out of him yet. I reckon we will see him in paris and maybe even in la. The watch this space wow, quite a addiction, cant. We will watch this space. Quite a prediction, kat. Getting out on our bikes is something lots of us have been doing since the coronavirus outbreak with figures showing a 146 increase in the number of people cycling since before lockdown. We have already had the very excited doctor william bird, gp, we have already had the very excited doctorwilliam bird, gp, talk we have already had the very excited doctor william bird, gp, talk about that. Now, the government wants to boost that even more, and has released plans which include bikes being prescribed on the nhs, thousands of miles of new cycle lanes, and changes to the highway code. Were joined now by olympic gold medallist chris boa rdman. Hes also the cycling and Walking Commissioner for greater manchester. Good morning to you. Thank you for joining us. We talk to you so often about this was that you think this isa about this was that you think this is a breakthrough . I do, actually, and probably more than people realise. The package of measures that are being announced, or rather, process , that are being announced, or rather, process, which sounds a bit worrying and geeky, are actually about getting this done, to get it happening boring and geeky. Most interesting is the creation of active travel england, establishing a body that will oversee this change and make sure there are very high standards for anything that is produced and a timeframe to get it in as well. So we have seen temporary measures, now councils have to deal with going forwards make a part of how we do streets. So it actually looks very, very good for me antics pretty much every box. I think this is the biggest step forward i have possibly seen in my lifetime. Wow. Talk to us about gps and their role in all of this. Theyre talking about prescribing cycling. Cannot work when you think . Well, working in greater manchester, as you just mentioned, as cycling and Walking Commission of the three yea rs, and Walking Commission of the three yea rs , we and Walking Commission of the three yea rs, we have and Walking Commission of the three years, we have always said health should have a seat at the transport table. It sounds a bit daft, but the roads and streets, they are arteries and veins and things that link us altogether. At the moment they are literally making us ill. Our gps have wa nted literally making us ill. Our gps have wanted the ages for the conversations i have had, to be able to prescribe exercise for people, just moving about, not extreme, but there are a lot of patients, be it mental health, physical health, exercise. But at the moment, they cannot do it because it doesnt look safe, doesnt feel safe, and you cannot do that en masse. But when you make a part of a whole strategy, and make the space, you know, make bikes available across the uk in lots of different ways to give people access to bikes, then it becomes a reality. And then you got an integrated system that is good for everyone. All that sort of thing sounds some way of, doesnt it . And what do you say to people who think, oh, cycling, am i going to be safe . Well, thats it, really. When you say it is a long way off, right now we are involved in putting in temporary measures because there is a quarter of households in Great Britain who dont have access to a car at all britain who dont have access to a carat alland we britain who dont have access to a car at all and we have got public transport operating at 30 , so 70 of people have got to find another way to travel or not go to work, in some cases with kids, they are at risk if they go to school. So the government has already said, right, we have money for temporary measures and we will pay for it. And that is what is happening now. So we can do it really quickly, and the two things can come together. This can be not only provision for people who dont have a car now, but a consultation for the future. Lets do this for a few months during the pandemic and if you like it, we will swa p pandemic and if you like it, we will swap them out for permanent bollards and keep the planters and the kids can keep playing in the street. Are you encouraged by how many people you encouraged by how many people you have seen get on their bikes during lockdown . I think. We also, i mentioned consultations, and at the start of this pandemic we literally turned off cars globally, and we saw what happened. For mary Different Reasons people used bikes, it might have been to get to work because of public transport issues, just to go out with bored kids, but for all of those Different Reasons other forms of transport drops between 60 and 90 . Cycling use actually went up 2030 and 300 on pre covid levels across the country. So people showed us if they feel safe and you give them the space they will ride a bike. Thank you very much for your time this morning. Thank you. Let us know what you think about that today. Lots of people getting in contact with us about Holiday Plans for the next few weeks, but the cycling side of things is another thing that is going to get you going as well. As ever, we are on social media this morning. Charity shops across the uk are facing a deluge of donations as those of us who have used the lockdown for a spring clean continue to inundate them with our unwanted goods. It comes as many stores are facing a shortage of volunteers, with older, more vulnerable workers choosing to stay at home and shield from coronavirus. Richard daniel has more. A warehouse full of donations. They have never seen anything like it. This is just have never seen anything like it. This isjust phenomenal. We really could not have expected anything like this. Its just been overwhelming. This charity has been lent and extra warehouse at wymondham and norfolk to cope. This lot donated in just three weeks. We got looks, weve got ornaments, weve had furniture, puzzles, clothes, right across the household items. It is going to take a huge amount of time to sort through this, it really is. But it is a task were loving. We really are. And the donations keep coming. Ten times what they would normally expect. Has gone really crazy. I think everybody, obviously when they have been at home, have sorted all their clothes out, and yes, it is really good. It is really good. During lockdown, the closure of its 14 shops and an end to fundraising meant the charity lost around £750,000 in revenue. The donations have been a huge boost. So one of the changes we have got here is the donation box. So if you want to donate, you just really dont have to come into the shop if you dont wa nt to come into the shop if you dont want to. You canjust pop it here, we are recording when you send it m, we are recording when you send it in, so we do have to store the stock for 72 hours before we can handle it, and of course, you can gift aid it, and of course, you can gift aid it as well. In berry, saint edmunds, donations are also up. The charity estimates nationally has lost £50 million, money that now would be spent on research into heart disease. We had a huge welcome from our loyal customers. They were really pleased to see us coming back in. Ithink really pleased to see us coming back in. I think a lot of them were very pleased with the changes we have made in the shops. The big c is under no illusions. It will take a long time to recover. But it says, thanks to various grants and the support of the public through donations, its future is secure. Shall we talk a little bit more about that . Were joined now by marina black, a Barnardos Charity shop manager, and also chrisjestico, who is head of retail for the Salvation Army trading company. Good morning to you both. Thank you so much forjoining us. Marina, we can see youve got a lot of stock behind you. How much more than normal have you had to deal with and been donated . Well, its basically more than double. We can take up to 1000 bags a week, in this store. And how are you coping with all of that . Well, we are storing it. We are managing to get through and sought quite a lot, but we just need the people to help us. And chris, what about from your own perspective . Give us an idea of the sort of workload you have had since people have been dropping this extra stuff off. We have seen donations increased from three and four times what our normal volumes are, which has been fantastic. It is really good. However, it is a challenge for our teams to deal with that volume, and we just really encourage people to think about what they are bringing to our shops, think about the time, and even contact the shop in advance. Because volumes are fantastic, but we welcome all donations, absolutely. Chris, have you had to turn donations away, at this point . We have tried not to turn donations away. Our policy is not to turn donations away. We have tried to encourage donators to contact us in advance and on social media allocating certain times that we we re media allocating certain times that we were welcoming donations. The difficulty is we are quarantining product as they come in. That gives us product as they come in. That gives usa product as they come in. That gives us a longer time to handle them and prepare them for sale. Normally we can turn them around straightaway but now it is taking us about 48 72 hours, which is longer than normal. Marina, i suppose in all that extra stuff that is coming down to you, it is trying to find those high value items, and to get rid of some of the stuff which people are. I suppose there are some people are using it asa there are some people are using it as a bit of dumping their on occasions. Well, we havent seen anything really like that. We do get broken items and things like that that we have to dispose of, but weve got a really good recycling system, so we can always reuse everything. Tell us a little bit about what is going on. You say you have got double the donations. You need people to help sorted out. What about actually selling the items . How is that all working . We are working through it. We are selling it. Our takings are good. And what about volunteers . You said you needed more people. What has been the problem . Yes, i think theres quite a lot of our volunteers that are shielding, that have children that are still on school holidays. And some of them are just scared to come back, because covid 19 is not going away. Were just learning to live it. Chris, what about the challenge for you . Marina was telling us people havent really been dropping off rubbish and using the shop in that way. Have you found that to be a problem where you are . We have. We have suffered from fly tipping. We offer 8000 covid banks, and unfortunately we have seen some fly tipping and it has cost us a significant amount of money to clear some of that fly tipping, because certainly although they are great donations, when they are left out in bad weather in the rain, they become out of the way. When know charities have suffered i know other charities have suffered as well with fly tipping, which has been a problem for us. And what is the issue with volunteers, from your perspective . Two things, really, we have had two, 50 of our volunteers return, which is great, and some are shielding or have health issues, but obviously we are controlling the numberof obviously we are controlling the number of people that are working our shops, not only on the sales floor but even in our pre sorting areas. We have also had to restrict numbers in ourshops areas. We have also had to restrict numbers in our shops because of social distancing, which has made it difficult for some volunteers to return. So i think both sides. It has been a challenge for us to maintain ourtrading has been a challenge for us to maintain our Trading Operations with our volunteers, who are fantastic, and continue to support us. We are welcoming them back as quickly as we can. And chris, just really briefly, presumably all of this has had a big impact on the financials, on you having money for the charity. Yes, of course, while our shops were closed and our clothing brands were closed, we have lost millions of pounds, which money goes direct to the Salvation Army, for all the good causes they support. Certainly that has been a big hand in our finances and a loss of a significant amount of income. Most of our shops are now back open, and we are busy. We are welcoming people back into our shops, so hopefully we can recover some of that. In a big chunk of money will never be recovered, sadly, for the Salvation Army. Chris, thank you very much for that, talking to us about what is going on with Charity Shops at the moment. And good luck with the bags we can see behind you, marina. Lots of questions coming in this morning about the impact of this changing travel advice that changed overnight, which includes the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, and all but not essential. Basically non essential travel is not allowed. And lots of people. And there is massive changes going on. Charlie says and there is massive changes going on. Charlie sastet2 have stated on their website that the holiday is cancelled already, it is on 29 october. Are they likely to under cancel if government advice changes un cancel. Charles is very confused. If you have specific questions, we cant deal with every specific question, but we will try and get through some of those. Just looking through lots of questions about insurance, what is covered stop do get those through. We will try and get hold of them. Carol started a bit of a debate, talking about the first saturday night tv programme that you can remember when you were a kid. She started this on social media. What is yours . a kid. She started this on social media. What is yours . I think mine is generation game. I think noels house party. And i think it was another. Thank you very much for taking part on twitter as well. This morning for many of us were off to a fine start, actually. There is some sunshine around. It is chilly if you are just stepping out. A beautiful weather watch as picture in here from solihull, and the hmmfi in here from solihull, and the forecast for today is one of sunny spells, showers, and it is going to be windy. Not as windy in the south as it was yesterday, but we have strong to force winds across parts of north east of scotland, particularly so in orkney, and that is where we have low pressure producing all this rain. But we have had a lot of showers coming across other parts of scotland, Northern Ireland, england and where through the course of the night. Being blown in on that gusty north westerly wind. You can tell it is gusty and strong just by looking at the proximity of those isobars. The isobars wider across england and today compared to yesterday. So we hang onto that rain across the far north east of scotland. We have also got the showers coming across the re st of got the showers coming across the rest of scotland, Northern Ireland, england and wales. A lot of them will be in the west, but on those strong winds, some of them will blow over towards the east as well and there will be quite a bit of cloud at times. The same for Northern Ireland, some of those showers getting over towards the east in the afternoon and the same across england and wales. Some of them getting across to the east and the south east, we are not immune to them. There will be a lot of dry weather and you could catch the odd shower at old trafford for the cricket. Temperatures 15 to 20 degrees, but tempered of course by that wind. Through the evening and overnight, our low pressure continues to pull off into the north sea. We still have some showers for a time, but then we have a transient ridge of High Pressure building in, which will settle things down. They will be clear skies tonight, so in rural areas it will feel quite cool. Temperatures will be lower than you can see on the chart, which indicates really towns and cities. So tomorrow, without transient ridge of High Pressure, there will be a lot of dry weather around. Still a few showers knocking around the north west of scotland. Here we will start off cloudy but we will end up with some sunshine. Across england and wales, we will start off with some sunshine and a few showers and end up with a bit more cloud because we have weather fronts coming in from the west which will later introduce some rain to Northern Ireland, and also parts of wales. So ahead of that, the sunshine will turn that bit easier. But then, as we head into thursday, a weather front is coming into Northern Ireland and wales continue to push northwards overnight and through thursday, taking the rain with them. Dry conditions behind, and certainly drier conditions across england and wales, and you will start to notice that the temperature is rising. So 27 in london, 21 in newcastle, 16 in stornoway, and on thursday the winds will fall much lighter as well. It is friday, though, that we see the real heat coming our way, and it will be hotter across the land, or warmer, depending on where you are. The exception to that is Northern Ireland. We do have a weather front coming in foryou, producing ireland. We do have a weather front coming in for you, producing some rain. Some of that could be thundery, so that will pay back your temperatures to 21. But by then we are looking at about 25 in edinburgh, 32 quite possibly in london, and that will be the first time july we have seen something over 30. The headlines are next. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Our headlines today more pain in spain for holiday makers as the government extends its dont travel advice to the canary and Balearic Islands. Jet2 becomes the latest airline to suspend flights, warning passengers due to travel to the islands not to go to the airport today. The uks embassies are accused of being confusing and lacking in compassion in their efforts to bring people home at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. A handout of £50 bike repair vouchers begins in england as part of a government push to get more people taking exercise. Good morning. Coronavirus is still biting hard on town centre lunchtime trade. With hospitality revenues down im looking at what happens if workers arent back in their offices soon. Good morning to you. Its tuesday the 28th ofjuly. Our top story. We can get more now from keith doyle, who is live at Gatwick Airport for us. Morning, keith, whats the latest . You are saying earlier many people there are travelling to spain this morning . Yes, good morning from Gatwick Airport. This is usually pick spanish holiday time. 18 million britons to get spanish holiday last year this year things are very different. Now, many people have decided to still go to spain. We have been talking to some here this morning. But for many of those, their holidays have been curtailed or cancelled, as you said, jet2 has cancelled flights to spain. It says anyone who has late this morning who has light should not turn up at the airport, those whites will not be operating. For people who are in spain and due to getjet2 like home, those flights will operate today. The alliances will give more information to passengers today and over the next coming days the airline. E2 are ready cancelled their holidays to spain. Operators still operating our British Airways, ryan airways and easyjet, but easyj et have ryan airways and easyjet, but easyjet have cancelled many holidays. And on refunds and insurance, because the official government advice has changed, refunds and read bookings should be possible, but when it comes to insurance, if you choose to travel against government advice, then your holiday insurance may well be invalid. Really there are still lots of questions and lots of answers people will be looking for. Keith doyle, bbc news. Lets find out a bit more about the reaction in spain. Gavin lee is in barcelona for us. Gavin, what are they making of the decisions there . The reality is the political fallout of this has gone all the way to the Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, and a tv programme late last night made it clear that he thought this was unjust. He said he thought this was unjust. He said he believed written had miscalculated the Scientific Data and he talked about places, andalusia, costa del sole, benidorm, places where brits have been, the ca nary islands, places where brits have been, the Canary Islands, singular incidences in these places than there are in most of britain. So this is wrong, is what spanish officials are saying, and we are told is well padded true centres are still talking to the British Government to try and make them relax these measures try and make them relax these measures and we are told Pedro Sanchezis measures and we are told Pedro Sanchez is still talking to the British Government to make them relax these measures. British government is advising against all but essential travel to the spanish mainland and islands. Officials on both sides are going to work out if it is possible to open an air corridor or make the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands quarantine free, but there are thoughts going on. Briefly, the reality is, specially where i am in barcelona, the catalonia region, the incidence rate has increased magically in the past three weeks. Across spain they went from 200 cases a day to having more than 2000 cases a day. Yesterday it was 855. Comparative to the population, that is two open three times higher than the uk, it was fewer a two weeks ago 2 3, and that is easy for the Spanish Government. It is mandatory to wear a mask everywhere, notjust in Public Places but on the streets as well. Get you people are told to minimise contact but also tourists are being told come here, you will be saved, we are keeping on top of things was that but it is a difficult message to sell on both sides. Gallantly, thank you for the update from barcelona. Gavin lee. Our Political Correspondent chris mason joins us now chris, the government is in a tricky position juggling its data with the hopes of holidaymakers hoping to get away. We are getting so many messages from people who are booking holidays, have book holidays, and i really desperate to find out what the latest advices from the government ona number of latest advices from the government on a number of locations now . Yeah, good morning to you, dan, the government is saying no travel is risk free during a pandemic, emphasising things could change really, really quickly. Let me tell you how it works. Two organisations at the heart of theirs Public Health england and thejoint biosecurity centre, they do the numbercrunching, the data that comes in everyday and every week, to try and work out where places could prove to be risky. That information is then passed onto ministers, ministers here at westminster, also ministers here at westminster, also ministers in edinburgh, cardiff and belfast. They reach decisions. And thatis belfast. They reach decisions. And that is what happened over the weekend with pain. What is very striking here is how dynamic all of this is, how much change that could still occur. So was of the decision taken last night as far as the Spanish Islands were concerned. Ministers are acutely conscious when they make those decisions that they are ruining people because my plans, that they are crippling the tourist and travel industry which has suffered particularly during this pandemic. They know that there are finejudgements to be made. There are plenty saying can you make more subtle, more careful decisions, some would see it, around particular regions . Whether it be the islands, for instance, in the spanish context. The government being asked to have a clear message otherwise people will be confused was that i think the key message to take away this morning, dan, we have seen a lot of chains already, plenty more change to come. Conversations are still alive year in westminster as far as still alive year in westminster as faras spain is still alive year in westminster as far as spain is concerned and other countries as well. So that, bluntly, is how 2020 is going to roll. Things changing all the time. We will try and get the latest from the government in 20 minutes time. Thank you, chris. The Foreign Affairs select Committee Found there was a lack of empathy and compassion shown to some of the 1. 3 britons stranded abroad due to travel bans at the start of the pandemic. The Foreign Office said it worked tirelessly to bring those stranded home on 186 charter flights. A range of measures to get people cycling and walking in england have been announced by the government. They are promising thousands of miles of new protected cycle lanes, changes to the highway code, and bikes made available through the nhs as part of a £2 billion investment announced earlier this year. A delayed scheme offering £50 vouchers towards the cost of fixing a bike will also go live today. There is a quarter of households in britain without access to a car at all, and public transport operating at 30 . 70 of people have to find a way to go to work. Kids have to go to school. The government has said all right, we have money for temporary measures, do it now and we will pay for it. And that is what is happening now. So we can do it really quickly, and the two things can come together. This can be not only a provision for people who dont have a car now, its a consultation for the future. Lets do this for the few months through the pandemic, and then if you like it, we will swap out the cones with permanent bollards and the kids can keep playing in the street. After weeks in court discussing his personal relationship, johnny depps trial is due to end today. The actor is suing the Sun Newspaper for libel over a 2018 article which labelled him a wife beater following allegations about his relationship with his ex wife, amber heard. Mr depp denies the claim. Ajudgement is expected later this year. Now, in the past few hours, ultra runner Carla Molinaro has become the fastest woman to travel by foot from john ogroats to lands end. A huge congratulations. The 36 year old completed the 874 mile journey in 288 hours, 30 minutes, and 14 seconds a total of 12 days, beating the Current Record holder sharon gayter, by more than ten hours. Yeah wow, what a feeling that must be. Carla spent 16 hours a day running since she set off onjuly 16th and didnt even take a break to celebrate her birthday. We were hoping to speak to her but we understand she is a little bit tired, as you can imagine huge congratulations, what an extraordinary thing to have done. So many races have been cancelled, so many races have been cancelled, so many ultramarathon runners are breaking records on their own. It is 7 12am. Just over two weeks ago, holiday makers were rushing to book flights to spain after they were given the green light by the government. Today, thousands of tourists are overseas and confused after that advice changed again. Yeah, warnings against all non essential travel to mainland spain have left brits wondering what to do next, and business worrying again about their future. Steve snape owns a bar in majorca, hejoins us now. Thank you forjoining us. The advice changed again last night. How is this impacting on you . Dramatically. The resort at the moment is very quiet. We opened two weeks ago, this is going to be our one chance to earn money, then we get this news and businesses now will probably have to close in about two weeks time. You have tourists there at the moment, and what are they making of it . Really, we have had people in the bar this week who are due to go back today and back to work on the third, and they are panicking now because they have rung their employers and their employers have said well, yes, have your two weeks off but we wont pay you. And people in the bar who actually met our last night when the news came across, coming straight to the bar, asking me what is the situation, steve . And some are quite panicky over it. And some are quite panicky over it. And some people are quite fortunate because they have property over here, so they will extend their holiday for another three weeks and see how they go without. So its quite mixed, really. But there is an element of, oh, my god, what is going to happen . And give us a sense. We know so many british tourists travel to spain, to the islands as well. How much do they rely on tourism from the uk . Absolutely totally. In majorca, our business, normally our business run seven months a year. Thats the maximum we can run. Lights and hotels included. This year we opened two weeks ago, and we are totally reliant or virtually reliant on english customers. And at the moment, all we can see as we have another two weeks trade by the public is here, and then after that, literally the resort may well die. Which has got to be so upsetting for everybody. It is. For most of the Business Owners point of view, we havent received any money from the government at all. It is not like england with the grants dm, is not like that. Not 1 england with the grants dm, is not like that. Not1 cent grant scheme. My staff furloughed on may one, he hasnt received any payments, so its going to be shocking for all of us. What you think youre going to do . Shocking for all of us. What you think youre going to do . Will you close . Think youre going to do . Will you close . Ill hang myself. No, well, i dont think ill have much choice. We will review within two weeks, obviously, and see what the situation is. But its not looking very promising at all. Well, jump on do worry for you. Thank you very much, please take out well, steve. Lets get more on this. Werejoined now by the labour mp chris bryant, who is the chair of the all Party Parliamentary group for spain. Mr bryant, thank you very much for your time this morning. We will come to the fco report a little bit later on, if we can. Butjust listening to steve there, owning a bar in majorca, talking about the situation he is in, getting so many comments from people who are in spain or thinking about travelling to spain are worried about going to another holiday destination somewhere else, what have you made of the last 48 hours and the situation that many holidaymakers now find themselves in . Well, i think the government has handled it really, really badly. It has been very candid. I heart goes out to lots of people who have been coming back cack handed. They wa nt coming back cack handed. They want to abide by the rules and by the law, but in many cases they dont have the luxury of a job you canjust do dont have the luxury of a job you can just do from dont have the luxury of a job you canjust do from home, so they dont have the luxury of a job you can just do from home, so they will suddenly find themselves without pay or in some cases may be even with bosses saying sorry, if you are not able to come into work, that is the end, nice to know you, kind of thing. Sol end, nice to know you, kind of thing. So i think it is very, very worrying, and in relation to the way they dealt with spain, i would have thought that the whole point of where we have got to now with coronavirus was that we know that through track and trace and through being very selective about where we use additional lockdowns in the uk, for instance, we should be able to do that with our advice about other countries as well. Why the canaries, which are further away from barcelona than barcelona is from the uk, and are on the list as well as mainland spain, i said we dont understand. And there are many, many regions in spain which have much lower infection rates than many areas in the uk. I think this has been terribly badly handled, and my biggest anxiety is if the government keeps on mishandling issues like this, it is notjust that people will keep going dominic cummings, dominic cummings, dominic cummings, theyjust wont listen to the argument anymore. I think from the Government Point of view, and we will hear from them in about 13 minute time, we have the housing minister, simon clark, with us on brea kfast. Minister, simon clark, with us on breakfast. They have been criticised in the past for being unclear on certain issues, most particularly in relation to the use of face coverings in shops, for example. I suppose they could say they have been clear on this. Let me finish the question. There was data there suggesting that spain was an issue and therefore they made a judgement on spain. It was then raised about the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, and they made an argument on that as well. Can you at least say they have been clear on that . 210 days ago we knew there was an issue in relation to spain, and government ministers should have been thinking about that then. They have acted very slowly and then very suddenly. And thats the worst, the fits and starts of the way the government has treated people, and with no financial compensation whatsoever for individual families when they quarantine and come back. We have been arguing from the very beginning that this is one of the major problems with the way the government has approached this. You have to make sure that people who are doing the right thing are not financially massively out of pocket. Soi financially massively out of pocket. So i think there could have been much more sensitive, they could have used more finesse in relation to spain. We may have to do the same in relation to france. Just to be clear, do you think the government should be warning us now about situations that might develop in france and germany . Because i suppose the counterargument to that is if you start going down that road, nobody would go anywhere. That is obviously the danger and i am sure there are lots of people who book holidays in france now who are thinking i dont know which way that is going to go either. And that is terribly difficult for people. But at least if you have got a bit more warning than you can make better provision within your own family and you can think about your finances. I think the terrible difficulty for many of my own constituents over this weekend has been they have suddenly come back, they are not allowed to go to work now for two weeks, and they are facing difficult situations financially for themselves and for their employers as well. I wanted to ask you as well about the fact that the Foreign Office have been criticised for the way they handled the repatriation of more than1 way they handled the repatriation of more than 1 million way they handled the repatriation of more than1 million britons, this is a long time ago now, but right back at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. What do you think are the key lessons that can be learned from that . I am on the Foreign Affairs select committee and we produce this joint cross party report earlier this morning and we were very struck by the fact that the government seemed to be very, very reluctant to use. They kept insisting on people trying to find commercial flights to get back to the uk, without realising that sometimes that meant people had to fork out £3000 or £4000 to get home, and there were lots of people who simply couldnt do that because they were stuck in more remote countries around the world. One classic instance was that the way the phones work in the Foreign Office, and all the embassies in the world, you were ending up with the same message, which is our embassy is closed, and that simply isnt good enough today. People need much better information. The government should have been putting on flights, as other countries did, much sooner to be able to bring people back home. I am not the only mp, i am sure, but i had several constituents who were stuck in peru, in africa, in pakistan, andl stuck in peru, in africa, in pakistan, and i know all my colleagues were sort of tearing their hairout colleagues were sort of tearing their hair out trying to get people back, because the British Government seemed so reluctant, unlike the french, the germans, even the italians, to bring people home stop they set aside i think it was £74 million to do this, and they only spent £40 million of it because they we re spent £40 million of it because they were so spent £40 million of it because they were so reluctant to dip their hands in their pockets, and lots of families were very, very stressed. You are slowly slipping down the screen, mr bryant. I didnt want to end upjust screen, mr bryant. I didnt want to end up just speaking to your forehead. I did want to ask you, i suppose mistakes are always going to be made in management of a pandemic, as we have seen over the last few months. For those who are, you know, worried about what is happening in spain at the moment, i know this might not happen, but lets say there was to be another sort of huge repatriation effort. Are you confident that those lessons have been learned and things would be more smooth next time around . No, im not, because when we had the minister in front of the select committee, he didnt know the number of british people stuck abroad. That seems extraordinary. You would think that the government would have learnt that they have got to be on top of this every single day of the week. I mean, i have to say, we heard Amazing Stories of Foreign Office officials going, you know, way beyond the call of duty. And i am enormously grateful to them. But there just needs to be a much more concerted and clear idea that british nationals stuck overseas are just as important as british nationals here in the united kingdom, and that lots of people who are massively out of pocket, through no fault of their own, found themselves in parts of the world where it felt as though the British Government simply didnt care about them. And now, let me be clear. I have tried to give the government the benefit of the doubt throughout all of this pandemic, because none of this is easy. I get that. But you have to have clear messages, from the beginning to the end. You cant have the fits and starts. You cant suddenly invent a new policy and expect everybody to jump to it. Chris bryant, thank you very much for your time this morning. We will be getting a response from the government in a few minutes time live on breakfast. A cat has been confirmed as the first animal in the uk to have tested positive for coronavirus, and scientists believe it was infected by its owners. Questions are now being asked about how the virus can be passed between humans and their pets. Lets get more on this now. Were joined by professor Margaret Hosie from the university of glasgow, she was one of the researchers involved in the case, and also by the yorkshire vet, peter wright. Good morning to you both. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us. Margaret, first of all, why did you even test this cat for covid . Well, we knew from colleagues elsewhere in the world that it was possible for cats to become infected if they lived in households with close contact lived in households with close co nta ct to lived in households with close contact to people who were suffering from covid 19, and we thought its very important to isolate a cat specific virus so that we can understand much more about transmission of the virus between different species. And how do you think. Is it understood that the cat got covid from its owners . Absolutely, yes. Thats definitely a conclusion. Not the other way around . Absolutely not, absolutely not. Because that is important, isnt it . Not. Because that is important, isnt it . Well, of course, but absolutely no evidence that humans can become infected from cats. The whole driver of the pandemic has been human to human transmission, and this event of a human to a cat transmission is really very unusual. We know we have got a lot of cat lovers and cat owners who watch this Programme Every single day, so what is the message to them this morning . What sorts of things should they be looking out for or thinking about . think the message here is that there is virtually no risk of picking up coronavirus from the cat. I think thats got to be said. I think there is very little evidence that there is very little evidence that there is going to be spread from animal to animal. I dont think that is an issue. But i do feel, as has been said, that there is a very, very slight risk of someone with covid 19 passing the infection onto the cat. And i think the messages we need to give our scrupulous hygiene processes, dont allow our pets near our face, processes, dont allow our pets near ourface, and processes, dont allow our pets near our face, and just obey those rules. I dont think we can go far wrong. Margaret, can i ask you, how ill was the cat . The cat had signs of respiratory disease, and that is why the vet submitted samples to a diagnostic lab. Actually, the cat had snotty knows, runny eyes, and we we re had snotty knows, runny eyes, and we were able to identify feline herpes virus. These are not the symptoms we would expect of a cat infected with the coronavirus. Other cases have shown things like coughing and difficulty in breathing, and some cases of pneumonia as well. They are com pletely cases of pneumonia as well. They are completely recovered. Have you had people coming to you suspecting that their pets to have coronavirus at all . Not yet, really. We consider that the likelihood of an animal picking covid 19 up from a human is pretty rare. So however many cases there have been in humans, there have been very few in our pets, particularly cats, so i dont think it is something we need to get too worried about, really. Ok, peter. We will end on that optimistic note. Peter, margaret, thank you very much. Really good to talk to you this morning. You are watching bbc breakfast. Still to come we will hear from the twin tv doctors who were making a documentary about life on the front line when one of them was struck down with covid 19. Well be discussing that shortly, and bringing you the latest news and weather. Now lets get the weather, with carol. Very good morning. It looks like there is going to be some lovely weather around. Good morning, this morning some of us are looking at some sunshine. As you can see, our weather watch as picture taken in london. We have some blue skies, but not everywhere. You can see some rain around. The forecast for today is one essentially of sunshine and showers. We have got some rain in the north east, and windy. The windiest conditions today will be across the northern half of the country. But just across the northern half of the country. Butjust one look at those isobars tells you it is still going to be pretty breezy in the strongest winds will be around orkney, where we are having strong to Gale Force Gusts of wind accompanied by some rain, all connected with the low pressure that brought the rain to us yesterday. For the rest of the uk we have got showers across parts of scotland, Northern Ireland, north west england and wales, and on the brisk winds we will be seeing some of those getting towards the east, even the south east. But in between, there will be some brighter skies. These are the kind of wind gusts you can expect, strongest across the far north east of scotland. And in that wind it will make it feel cooler than the temperatures suggest, which arent great shakes for this stage injuly anyway. 15 in lerwick to highs of 20 in london. Through this evening and overnight, this low pressure slowly sta rts overnight, this low pressure slowly starts to move away as a ridge of High Pressure builds across us, settling things down and killing off most of the showers. There will be some clear skies, so it is going to bea some clear skies, so it is going to be a cooler night than the one just gone, especially so in rural areas. These temperatures indicate what you can expect in towns and cities. So tomorrow we have this transient ridge of High Pressure across us. Look at the distinct lack of isobars. Not much in the way of wind at all and isobars. Not much in the way of wind at alland a isobars. Not much in the way of wind at all and a clutch of fronts coming in from the south west. We start off in scotland and a cloudy note, with some showers. But through the day it will brighten up and you will see some sunshine. For england and wales you start off with some sunshine and a few showers. But through the day for you it will cloud up as we have this weather front coming in, eventually bringing rain into Northern Ireland, wales, and we will see some splashes getting into the south west as well. But if you are in any sunshine, it wont feel is cool because of the lack of wind. Were looking at highs up to 23 degrees. That clutch of weather fronts pushes northwards, taking its rain with it through Northern Ireland and scotland, look how those isobars veer to a more southerly direction. They are going to be pulling in those warm or hot Continental Air across the board. But we do have a weather front very close to Northern Ireland, and through the day, that is going to bring some thick cloud, some rain, and we could see some thunderstorms as well. That is why your temperature is going to be 21, lower than anywhere else. But in the north we are looking at 15 to about 21, Central Lowlands only five, and as we come south, that is where we are likely to see the heat, up to 32. As we head into the weekend, temperatures once again start to slip into the high teens or low 20s. I will have more later. This is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Lets get you up to date on the news this morning. Ministers are facing growing criticism after extending their advice against non essential visits to mainland spain to the balearic and Canary Islands. The guidance had initially excluded any restrictions on travel to islands such as majorca, ibiza and tenerife, but that was changed last night. Its the third time advice on travel to spain has changed in the last three days, leaving hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers a little confused. Lets try and get some clarity now from the government minister simon clarke. You are the minister for Regional Water growth and local government. Could you tell us why the advice changed last night . We continue to keep the situation under very close view. Regional growth and local government. And in light of the bit is now optional is overseas in spain, british nationals overseas in spain, the decision to have them isolate for two weeks upon return, changing the advice to you should avoid all but essential travel, that is clearly designed to minimise the disruption people face by going there. Nothing changed, youjust looked at it again . What happened . We obviously take advice from all of our decisions on thejcb and we take decisions based on the disruption people are going to face. Clearly youre going to have to self isolate for two weeks upon your return, that isa for two weeks upon your return, that is a significant disruption to peoples lives, so we change the guidance to reflect the fact it is therefore inadvisable to travel to Spanish Islands and with your journey is essential. Do except you probably have caused more disruption for some people, thinking well, maybe i wont go to mainland spain, because the government is avoiding dark, old instead go to one of the islands . No, i dont accept that, i afraid. I think a lot of people have to a cce pt afraid. I think a lot of people have to accept that when travelling. There were some hours and it was a reasonable assumption to make, wasnt there . Reasonable assumption to make, wasnt there . I suspect very few people make their plans and were used described. In the way you described. There is a degree of uncertainty, the situation changes on the ground. When that happens we have to reserve the right to take action to keep the British Public safe. That is what we have done in the case of spain. And i think we need to face equally, frankly, we would face equally strong criticism, frankly, if we had not done so, being accused of inaction in a growing health crisis. It is important to remember we are doing this because the balance of medical opinion is the right thing to do. The spanish Prime Minister, and i know you will be aware of this, is claiming that britain has miscalculated, the spanish data, and that it miscalculated, the spanish data, and thatitis miscalculated, the spanish data, and that it is Scientific Evidence that has given is to included the islands. There are higher incidences on the uk than the islands, for example. We respectfully disagree with the Spanish Government because my position on this. We continue to work closely with them and we wish them every success in managing this outbreak, we have seen a very sharp increase in cases in spain, 75 increase in cases in spain, 75 increase reported between the middle of last week in the end of last week, that is why we took the action that we have. Clearly, you do have to make decisions on a countrywide basis, there is going to be internal tra nsfer basis, there is going to be internal transfer within spain. It is important that we do our utmost to protect the public. We have had so many questions and there is a sense of anxiety, and well come to that ina minute of anxiety, and well come to that in a minute from people watching this morning. This is from sam russell that point. Would you lockdown london if there was a spike in carlisle, for lockdown london if there was a spike in ca rlisle, for example . Lockdown london if there was a spike in carlisle, for example . In the uk we obviously focus on our strategy of localised lockdowns. That is how we are proceeding in this country, based on the test entry system. But we have to look at the situation in spain and we have seen the data changing in the way that it has. Test and traced system was that we have taken a decision designed to train protect lives and etiquette was the right decision. We cannot apologise for it while recognising obviously it is hugely disruptive for people who are on holiday there are planning on going on holiday there. We are all very sympathetic with there situation their situation but we live in a well now where we have to respond to the data as it changes. We have to listen to the scientific advice and we have, i think, done the best we can in the face of this recent uptick in cases in spain. We have been hearing from our respondent in spain this morning he was saying talks are still ongoing. Are they . We continue to talk to the Spanish Government all the time. And we absolutely want to make sure that we understand the later situation and what is going on on the ground. The latest situation, our position is clear, you shouldnt travel to spain unless you shouldnt travel to spain unless you absently have two and returning from spain will lead to self isolation for two weeks, which is about protecting the Wider Community as well as yourself. There isa community as well as yourself. There is a report, front page of the telegraph this morning, saying two weeks may be cut to ten days . Is that being discussed . Weeks may be cut to ten days . Is that being discussed . Well, we a lwa ys that being discussed . Well, we always listen to the advice that we are getting, and what best practice can be. But i wouldnt want to confuse any viewers this morning. The advice is Crystal Clear that it is 14 days at this stage and it is absolutely what people should do if they are returning from spain. Can we talk a little bit about the anxiety from people . So many people getting in touch saying their plans are being ruined. Financially, they are being ruined. Financially, they are impacted. We have heard from somebody saying they returning to the uk have now from spain, suddenly they have to take two weeks off work. Can anything be done to help them . Look, we all feel deeply for everybody affected by this. We very strongly encourage employers to take a sensible and compassionate approach to people who find themselves in this situation. If people are in genuine crisis, then of course there is a safety net for the new employment support allowance or through universal credit in advance this can be paid very quickly if you are in immediate need. But we do hope employers will be supportive and put sensible steps in place to accommodate people who are affected in place to accommodate people who a re affected by in place to accommodate people who are affected by this. It is, after all, of no fault of their own. So we really hope and expect employers will be supportive, but there is supportive people needed. A lot of people are also looking at that point. Could you not give people more notice . Well, the situation changed incredibly quickly. We got the data on thursday, friday, about the data on thursday, friday, about the 75 increase in cases relative to the middle of the week, and on saturday. I do not think that really there could have been a much prompter turnaround. Obviously we have to response of the data. It is in real time as much as we can to avoid the risk of it being imported into the country. That is, im afraid, a backdrop in which all foreign travel has to be conducted. At the moment. If you travel abroad, there may be a change in the situation on the ground and people may be asked to self isolate upon return. I think we all want to minimise the number of cases where this happens, but it isjust minimise the number of cases where this happens, but it is just a reality now of the world we are in until such time there is final progress to eliminate the virus. We know there and increasing numbers in france. Can you let people know what is on the watchlist, so people can inform their Decision Making . What is on the watchlist, so people can inform their decisionmaking . We ta ke can inform their decisionmaking . We take our advice from the jvc, the number of cases in france and germany are significantly lower than spain, and therefore there is no change to our guidance at this time from the jbc, change to our guidance at this time from thejbc, but if the situation changes and worsens, then we have to reserve the right to intervene. And that is going to remain the position. Equally, were not saying do not travel, just travel aware that this is, im afraid, one of the things that has to be factored in. Holidays are effectively, what, under threat . All holidays have to be taken understanding about foreign travel in the middle of a global pandemic, which has caused devastation across the world, has to be conducted against the backdrop of the governments rate to protect the uk. We made enormous strides in this country over the last few weeks and we have now but the situation very largely under control. We cannot jeopardise that. We cannot render all of the sacrifices that we have made redundant by failing to intervene to stop the virus from being imported from abroad. I understand people want to go on holiday but it is a chance you may be asked to self isolate upon your return. And this is going to and has already, you know, we are seeing cancellations of flights this morning, have a huge impact on the whole travel industry. Are you going to look at special measures to support the industry . What are you going to do . We have a dedicated Aviation Task force, and that is looking at all of the measures we can take to support companies. Nearly they are entitled to the wider package of support, multibillion pound package of support we offered to companies in terms of grants and loans as well as the furlough scheme and broader support. So there is a lot of support. So there is a lot of support in place and clearly we talked to all of them main players in the industry, as you would expect. Its a terrible time for aviation, we all know that. U nfortu nately, we aviation, we all know that. Unfortunately, we have to look at the reality of the world were living in, and the fact there is an ongoing pandemic, and therefore action will occasionally be required in order to safeguard the British Public. Can i ask you another question, which i know the government is talking about today, about how it is going to make cycling much more popular in this country . Prescribing it on the nhs, making cycles available through gps, perhaps . How would you persuade people it is safe to get on the bikes . We are pleased to make this announcement today, £2 billion of investment over the next five years and the infrastructure required to make cycling safer, to give vouchers to bring bike parts for repair and use, all of the steps you referred to around prescribing cycling for people who are overweight and could benefit from it its about making it easier to cycle. And i think these steps will help to do that. Clearly, if you have dedicated cycleways, if you have better cycling training available, if you have many schemes, as we are starting to roll out in a dozen local areas, then it will be more viable for more people to cycle. It is obviously good for their health, particularly at a time when there is a connection between being overweight and susceptible to coronavirus. Its also good and the wider sense the mental and physical health, and for broader considerations beyond that like air quality. So it is a good announcement. It is part of our travel package, and i think it will be welcomed by a lot of people. By now, thank you for your time on brea kfast now, thank you for your time on breakfast this morning. Thank you. Simon clarke, thank you for your time on breakfast this morning. And we put quite a few of those questions to the minister that we received from you this morning. Its exactly two years until the Commonwealth Games begin in birmingham, and organisers have revealed more details about some of the locations and events we can expect. Our correspondent phil mackie is in the heart of the city for us this morning. Where are you exactly . This is where the old wholesale market used to be. Its the old wholesale market used to be. Its recently been demolished. We are very its recently been demolished. We are very close to the city centre, and this is where the Beach Volleyball and basketball courts will be and arenas. Thats hope it is a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. This is basketball, three on three, these are the birmingham rockets being put through their places by tea m being put through their places by team england. You can see this empty site at the moment. In the back row, iconic buildings in birmingham. The rotunda and the church. You cant see left of the rotunda is the translation and the future hs2, kirsten street station behind there. And we have some of the team england volleyball players going through their paces. Jake and jess, do you mind coming over so we can have a quick chat . Exciting, is it, that you are thinking about the Commonwealth Games in two years . Yeah, really exciting. So exciting to experience wedding venue is probably going to be, and get into the buzz of things. And j, you have qualified for the mens team or still have a chance of olivine for the olympic next year jake, is that on your mind at the moment, or just Commonwealth Games . Both, really. Were just excited to get back into some competition for next year as soon as everything gets sorted. Next may will be the last round for final olympic qualifications for the man. Then sights set on Commonwealth Games. And jess, women havent qualified for tokyo olympics, but commonwealth isa big, for tokyo olympics, but commonwealth is a big, big target for you as well . Massive. And the opportunity to play last time was an insight for me. Not normally an opportunity we have had, so do have Beach Volleyball back to the games so to have Beach Volleyball back into the games has raised the profile of the games has raised the profile of the sport as well. You feel you have some home advantage . Absolutely. There is not too much exposure in the uk generally, abroad it is huge, its come back and show people what we its come back and show people what we do when we go away, hopefully we can get some support and some buzz around it would be awesome. Is it your focus now, two years from today, you will be here, opening ceremony. . Today, you will be here, opening ceremony. . That is today, you will be here, opening ceremony. . That is the today, you will be here, opening ceremony. . That is the big today, you will be here, opening ceremony. . That is the big goal. Were competitions before than we have been given the go ahead to get back into it and we will keep building to make sure were ready to be ready when it comes. Thank you, jay, thank you jess. A lot of excitement here at birmingham. A big dealfor the excitement here at birmingham. A big deal for the city and of course the coronavirus pandemic has had and impact on the plans. So there are some questions on that but some things will still be delivered on time, and this, hard though it may be to believe, at the moment, is kind of a wasted derelict site in the city centre, it will be one of the city centre, it will be one of the focuses of the events starting in two years, with the basketball and Beach Volleyball arena here. What we should do in two years time is replayed this little bit, and see what it is like. I love the fact that you adjust for the weather but plainly dont have the weather for Beach Volleyball. I did tell them they didnt have to get stripped down to that, but they insisted on wearing their full kit. A bit of sand in the background, making you probably think about holidays. Lots of comments and quite a few people saying this. This is from one viewer on social we booked a holiday to france on the clear understanding that we know it is a risk. We have taken what taken we that we know it is a risk. We have taken we think are adequate precautions if things change before we go. This is something were looking at throughout the programme. More workplaces are expected to open up next month, which could be crucial for the countrys sandwich shops and cafes, which rely on Office Workers. In the last few minutes, greggs has announced they made a loss in the first half of the year as they feel the effects of lockdown nina is talking to the boss in a moment. Lots of people in the same situation at the moment, not really a surprise. Good morning. Lockdown hit hospitality hard. Numbers out today show, at the height of lockdown, Hospitality Sales were down 90 . They have received all sorts of support from the government vat cuts, bonuses to take back workers, rates relief, even a Voucher Scheme to get us to eat out. But what about if your business relies on passing trade and workers are staying at home . Things have been improving over the past few weeks, but Research Suggests its evening rather than lunchtime spend where were splurging. Greggs the baker recorded losses of more than £60 million in the first half of the year. As dan said, ill be talking to their boss shortly. But first, here are two Business Owners reliant on lunch time trade who i spoke to in manchester yesterday. The only way this business survives is through the offices and through the shopping visits. At the moment, were surviving, which is better than most. How full is it now . At lunchtime it is 10 . Im looking for the shirts and ties, the suits. These are the people, these are the Office People. Im looking outside and im seeing shoppers and people going for wanders or going for drinks. But in terms of Actual Office people, its still early, but huge concern, theres no doubt. Well, if it continues like this, and the workers dont come, welljust close down. Simple as that. Simple as. We get no help after, so perhaps we get to january, and well have to close down. The government is encouraging workers to get back into city centres like this. How high are the stakes if that doesnt happen soon . Catastrophic is probably the word to use, yes. Were 90 95 reliant on the Office People coming in, for sandwiches, coffees. Theres no way we would survive, paying people to stay here, so. Difficult times for businesses. Lets pick up on some of those points now and speak to the boss of greggs, roger whiteside, who joins us from berkshire. A very good morning to you, and lets go through the numbers, then. Pretax losses for the six months ending injune, £65 million compared to £37 million in profit for the same time last year. That would sound grim, except last week sales we re sound grim, except last week sales were right back up to 72 . Yes, we have been opening all shops now for about three weeks, and as you say, sales last week reached 72 of 2019s sales last week reached 72 of 2019s levels, which is really quite encouraging given there were so few people about, especially in places like you have just shown, public transport centres and Shopping Centres, and people are not using those places as much as they were, but greggs has a very wide variety of locations. Less than 14 of our locations are dependent on Office Workers and public transport. The vast majority of our shops are in local towns and suburbs and then areas and shopping locations accessed by car, which are doing much better. So 72 of trade. What about your staff, though . Many of them were on furlough. What percentage of them remain at home . At this level of sale we have managed to bring back three quarters ofa managed to bring back three quarters of a 25,000 employees. So we have still got about a quarter at home and what we want now is for the 72 to keep rising, and it is moving in the right direction. The higher it gets, the more people we can get back to work. It is moving in the right direction but the tapering has begun on the furlough scheme. Are you confident that all of those staff will be in a position to have a job come the end of autumn . think it is too early to say. I have to be optimistic. We have still got until the end of october. We intend to use the furlough scheme right up until the end of it, and we will contribute towards it to enable us to try and preserve as manyjobs as possible while we wait for the economy to get back to full strength. But no guarantee this morning that all of your staff will be brought back. There cant be. There is too much uncertainty in the outlook to be able to give that sort of guarantee. You said that you are less reliant on town and city centre trade, google the latest company to say their workers will stay home for another year. Even out of will be affected if people are working from home. Does that concern you, especially when you think about your transport hubs in the way you have moved into those areas in the past couple of years . Well, obviously it is not going to be helpful but given it isa is not going to be helpful but given it is a small proportion of our businesses, it is not as detrimental to us as to some of those who have specialised in that type of location. For us, we have looked at the demographics of our Customer Base and the vast majority of them simply cant work from home. They work on the frontline, in operations, in essential services, in construction, although sorts of areas, and they are obviously out and about because they have to be. Office workers, we understand that, because we are Office Workers, but thatis because we are Office Workers, but that is not what most people do. We have shops in all sorts of locations which are not dependent on Office Workers, but the Office Working areas are likely to be impacted longest as long as people continue working from home. You have announced the closure of 50 stores in the coming year but the opening of 60 stores, so things going in the right direction. Can be read anything into where they are, what sort of locations they are . Yes, this is a journey we have been on for a long while, so we have been over time reducing the number of shops we have in high street locations where we typically have more than one shop. Obviously internet shopping is the other thing thatis internet shopping is the other thing that is growing and has taken a step up that is growing and has taken a step up as that is growing and has taken a step upasa that is growing and has taken a step up as a result of this crisis. The internet shopping trend has been going for a long time. We have been reducing shop numbers in high streets where we have lots of units, but opening in areas where we dont have many shops, basically areas that can be accessed mostly by car. Public transport was one of our targets, obviously that has been put on pause now while we wait for public transport to get back into fashion. But there are many, many more opportunities for us to open in areas where people want convenient access to food on the go, and that opportunity lies still ahead of us. We have slowed down our shop Opening Programme temporarily while we wait and see how things pan out, but basically we still see that there is real opportunity for us to add many more than 2500 shops. We have 2500 shops now, we have said we want more than 2500. It will be slowed down for a while. But where specifically do you expect them to be, will it be out of town retail, parks . Just in terms of what you are expecting and where the growth is . Basically we have seen a massive expansion for example in petrol stations, Motorway Service stations, industrial estates, retail parks. We have started opening up in a few supermarkets. Theres all sorts of places where people want convenient access to food on the go when they are away from home. And last year the vegan sausage roll was an absolute sensation that saw overall sales go up by ten cent slot you said you were a committed vegan at the time stopjust said you were a committed vegan at the time stop just looking at some of the calorie counts in greggs, because part of the reason you became vegan because part of the reason you became vegan was because part of the reason you became vegan was for health reasons, 342 calories in a choc doughnut, 500 ina 342 calories in a choc doughnut, 500 in a chicken bigot, 300 in a chicken sausage roll. There is a strong message around obesity at the moment baguette. And greggs is not meeting some of those targets, is it . That is, im afraid, just not true. We have been working alongside the government and Public Health england for many years now to encourage healthier eating. Although we are famous for our sausage rolls we are famous for our sausage rolls we are famous for our sausage rolls we are one of the biggest brands in Healthy Eating choices. So we have reduced sugar in our sweet bakery by 20 , one year ahead of the Public Health england target. We already do much of what has been recommended in this new policy, which will be welcome and will help bring a level Playing Field across the sector. The devil will be in the detail as to how they apply the various policy recommendations and there are a number of consultations that need to be completed before they come to a conclusion on how that detail will be applied. Many thanks, and i am sure that vegan mince pie season will be upon us before we know it. cant believe you are mentioning that. Vegan mince pies . No, it is the season, it is not the mince pies im worried about. Normally i dive into the mince pie world about september time, as soon as the first day in the shops, i am in. september time, as soon as the first day in the shops, i am in. I am very trigger happy with the mince pies. Thank you to all of you who have been getting in touch with us as to what has been going on with the changes to the rules around travel, we will be going through your specific questions, as well. Lots of comments about understandable frustrations. Lots of people getting in touch to say if you are stupid enough to book a holiday abroad in a pandemic then you take the risk of the situation changing at any time. They say they dont feel sorry for people and andrea says will people ta ke people and andrea says will people take responsibly for themselves and make their own decisions . We have a worldwide pandemic. Those are some of the comments. It is just getting up of the comments. It is just getting up to 8am and carol has a look at what might be some glorious weather, from that picture, anyway. Good morning. Good morning, both, and good morning to you. It is a Beautiful Day in the isle of wight if you like it dry, sunny and fresh and that is a lovely picture sent in by one of our weather watchers. But the forecast generally today is a right old mixture. We have sunshine and showers, some of us seeing some rain, and it is windy. The strongest winds today are in the northern half of the country, particularly around the north east, and particularly stornoway. We have strong to gale force winds, and the isobars are more widely spaced across england and wales. Although it would be gusty and breezy, it wont be as windy as it was here. We will hang on to the rain across the north east today, showers across the west and in almost gusty wind. Some of those showers will blow over towards the east, even the south east could see some as we go through the afternoon, but equally there will be a lot of dry weather and some sunshine. But if you are in the breeze it will feel that bit cooler. Could catch the odd passing shower at old trafford for the cricket today. Some showers in Northern Ireland and also scotland, dont forget some of those being blown over to the east as well. It will mean the edge will be taken off the temperatures. At best we are looking at 15 to about 20 degrees in london. Through the evening and overnight, the low pressure which has been bringing all this rain will continue to push a bit more into the north sea. A transient ridge of High Pressure builds across us, settling things down and killing off many of the showers. There will be some clear spells tonight, and in rural areas it will feel pretty cool. Temperatures lower than these suggest, these really indicate what you can expect in towns and cities. Under that transient ridge of High Pressure tomorrow, a lot of dry weather. We start off with some sunshine across england and wales. Through the day, though, the cloud will build, turning the sunshine hazy and ending up with a cloudy afternoon by the end of the afternoon. Whereas in scotland you are looking at a cloudy start with some showers, improving through the day, if you like it drier and sunnier. In Northern Ireland and parts of wales we have a clutch of weather fronts coming your way, and they will eventually introduce some rain. That rain will continue overnight and through thursday to push steadily northwards. Easy around this band of rain, and then we have got another weather front just waiting on the winds out towards the west. For the rest of the country and for scotland and Northern Ireland, as their systems push northwards, there will be a fair bit of sunshine around, and especially in the south. Look how the temperatures are starting to rise. Thats an indication of what is going to come on friday. On friday, most of us will have a dry day. There will be a fair bit of sunshine around. Were pulling in a southerly breeze from the near continent, so that means temperatures are going rise, but in Northern Ireland, youve got cloud building, a weather front coming Northern Ireland, youve got cloud building, a weatherfront coming in, and youre also going to see some rain. Some of that actually be thundery. The temperature wont be as high, were looking at 21 in belfast. Temperatures in scotland, 15 to about 25, and as we cross england and wales, we see the higher values. 27 to possibly 32 degrees, for example, in london. And this will be the first day injuly that we will have reached 30 somewhere in the uk. The last time nowhere in the uk reached 30 during the month of july was in 2011. Then, as we head into the weekend, worth mentioning that the temperatures are going to slip. A little bit of rain, one or two showers, but a lot of dry weather as well. Coming up next, your headlines. Good morning. Its tuesday morning, its eight oclock. Welcome to breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Our headlines today more pain in spain for holiday makers as the government extends its dont travel advice to the canary and Balearic Islands. Asjet 2 becomes the latest airline to suspend flights, the government tells us it cant rule out further disruption. By all means go on holiday, but understand that it is a chance that you might be asked to self isolate upon your return. A handout of £50 bike repair vouchers begins in england as part of a government push to get more people taking exercise. Good morning. The benefits of not being at the olympics tom daley gives us his positive spin on spending time away from the pool during lockdown. Its tuesday, 28thjuly. Our top story the government is facing growing criticism of its decision to include the balearic and Canary Islands in its advice to avoid all but essential travel to spain. Travel Companies Say theyre deeply disappointed by the announcement, because the islands have not been affected by the surge in cases of coronavirus seen in parts of the mainland. In a moment, well be chatting to our Political Correspondent chris mason, but first lets talk to our reporter keith doyle, at Gatwick Airport. Of course, keith, good morning to you. At this time many people would be flying to spain. What are people telling you . Absolutely. Here at gatwick this is usually the peak Holiday Season for people flying to spain. 18 million britons took a spanish holiday last year but of course these are not normal times and the fact the government has issued this advise against all but essential travel to spain means many people who chose to go this summer are seeing their plans are curtailed or cancelled. Jet 2 the airline announced last night all of its flights to spain will be suspended until august the 16th. It has advised any passengers due to fly today not to go to the airport because those flights will not be operating. Anyone in spain and due to fly back on a jet 2 flight today, those flights will operate, but the airline says it will inform passengers about its plans, but for future flights today and over the next few days. Tui has also cancelled its spanish holidays. Ryanair, British Airways and easyjet say they are operating all of their flights but easyjet has cancelled some. On tv last night in spain, the spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez asked for the uk government to have asked for the uk government to have a rethink. He said a blanket two week quarantine is unjust and he wa nts week quarantine is unjust and he wants the canaries and Balearic Islands where the cases are low to be removed from their quarantine lists. He said discussions are under way there. Of course any discussions are not going to help anyone flying over the next few days. But really still lots of questions here and this is really not going to be a relaxing time for anyone who has chosen to go on a spanish holiday. Keith, thank you very much. We will speak to you after shortly as well. Our Political Correspondent chris mason joins us now. Chris, so many questions this morning. Those saying you shouldnt book a holiday during a global pandemic, and understandable frustrations from those who are on holiday or have booked a holiday. Absolutely, dan, that is the reality, in the coming weeks and months, so much of our lives shrouded in uncertainty. The government is emphasising this morning no travel is risk free in a pandemic. Let me talk you through how the process works in terms of the judgment the government has come to. Two organisations, Public Health england and also the joint Bio Security Centre and they crunch the numbers and look at what is going on in different parts of the world then pass those numbers to ministers to decide, ministers here at westminster but also ministers in edinburgh, belfast and cardiff. That is what happened over the weekend as faras spain is is what happened over the weekend as far as spain is concerned. The government says it saw a significant spike in cases at the tail end of la st spike in cases at the tail end of last week and that is why it made the decision and they say they made the decision and they say they made the decision and they say they made the decision as quickly as they could. The minister on breakfast this morning making that case was simon clark, in the last half hour. We have to respond to the data in as near to real time we can to avoid risk being imported into the country. That is im afraid the backdrop against which all foreign travel has to be conducted. If you do travel abroad there may be a change in the situation on the ground and you may be asked to self isolate upon your return. We all want to minimise the number of cases where this happens but it is just a reality now of the world we are in until such time as there is final progress to eliminate the virus. Dan, there was also a report in the Daily Telegraph this morning suggesting the quarantine period for people returning from spain, set at 14 days, could be reduced to ten days, alongside people being tested. Mr clarke saying this morning no, it is Crystal Clear, that at this stage the quarantine period is for 14 days, but it gives a sense of how quickly things are changing. He said one other thing as well that caught my eye. He said, we continue to keep things under very close review. Well, it is myjob at westminster to translate the verbiage gushing out of this place. I tell you what that means. It means the only certainty is uncertainty, the only thing guaranteed is that nothing is guaranteed. That is how summer 2020 is going to roll, im afraid. Not getting past your verbiage filter, mr mason, thanks very much thanks for the clarity on the un clarity at least laughter mps have criticised the way the Foreign Office handled the repatriation of more than a million britons at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. In a report, the Foreign Affairs Committee Said the response was too slow, communications were inadequate and there was too much reliance on commercial flights. Heres our diplomatic correspondent, james landale. When lockdown began in march some 1. 3 million britons were travelling the world. The government advised them to return in a massive repatriation. But for a lot of people it wasnt easy. Many countries shut their airports, closed their borders and banned internal travel. The Foreign Affairs Committee Said many fco staff went above and beyond to help people get home in extremely difficult circumstances. But the mp said, too many uk citizens were not provided with the support that they should reasonably expect to receive from the Foreign Office. The mps said communications were poor, with many britons unable to access information and others not treated with empathy or compassion. They urged the Foreign Office to improve its communication methods and its contingency plans. The Committee Chairman said there were clear failings in the Foreign Office response. The answer phones were not able to be fixed in embassies and couldnt be done remotely. So they were giving out mistaken messages. Sometimes we found that social media was not being used appropriately, and we could have seen many more people informed much more accurately, earlier. So we will be giving a very, very close eye on how the Foreign Office handles this latest round of emergencies in spain. The Foreign Office spokesman said it had taken unprecedented steps to help people and it had not been realistic to charter more flights. James landale, bbc news. A range of measures to get people cycling and walking in england have been announced by the government. Its promising thousands of miles of new protected cycle lanes, changes to the highway code, and bikes made available through the nhs as part of a £2 billion investment announced earlier this year. A delayed scheme offering £50 vouchers towards the cost of fixing a bike will also go live today. There are a quarter of households in Great Britain who dont have access to a car at all. And weve got public transport operating at 30 , so 70 of people have got to find another way to travel, or not go to work, and in some cases with kids, they are at risk if they go to school. So the government has already said, right, we have money for temporary measures, do it now and we will pay for it. And thats what is happening now. And we can do it really quickly, and the two things can come together. This can be not only provision for people who dont have a car now, its a consultation for the future. Lets do this for the few months through the pandemic, and then if you like it then well swap out the cones to permanent bollards and well keep the planters and the kids can keep playing in the streets. As weve been hearing today, the government has changed its advice on travel to spain to include the balearic and ca nary islands. Travellers returning to the uk from any of those places must self isolate for 14 days. Were alsojoined by the travel editor of the sun, lisa minot shes in france this morning. We are being told this is not a given, travelled to spain. What are your thoughts on what we have been hearing over the past few days . They we re hearing over the past few days . They we re really hearing over the past few days . They were really on their knees, suffering dreadfully, and just as they thought they were going to get back up and running again the rug has been pulled out from underneath them and others as consumers, travellers, we are left not knowing whether we can go on holiday from monday to the next first night as consumers. Some people, from one error to the next, consumers. Some people, from one errorto the next, in consumers. Some people, from one error to the next, in terms of the quarantine. We are hearing other places for example could change. What is your response . You are on holiday, i must say, on a most beautiful beach. Lots of people will think that is lovely, but do you feel like you are taking a risk, in some ways . I think it is a risk. My daughter is due to fly out to join at the weekend and im concerned perhaps france will be put into the same group, the quarantine group, before she gets here. Perhaps it might be an all but essential travel ban extended as well. Oh, thats a shame. We seem to have lost lisa she is well and truly frozen. Frozen on the beach there, yes. That is technology for you. So after that change of policy on spain, people might be concerned about which other Tourist Spots might be added to the list. In theory, any country with a rise in infections could see new rules imposed on travellers. In france, after a massive spike earlier this year, the numbers came right down, but have since crept back up again to about 1,000 cases a day. In germany, which was never badly affected, there has also been a slight increase, but only to about 300 cases a day. Greece, which was widely praised for its handling of the virus, has also seen a slight rise but only to about 30 cases a day. So what does it all mean for holiday makers . Lets chat to jonathan smith, from the uk travel trade association abta. Starting further starting with the rights of holiday makers in a situation like this, what sort of rights do they have in this changing advice . The changing advice on the ca nary advice . The changing advice on the canary and Balearic Islands, that will have a huge impact on a lot of people. A lot of people have their bags packed looking forward to a fantastic and well earned holiday. A big impact on businesses because spain isa big impact on businesses because spain is a popular destination for british holiday makers. Most of those people fortunately will have booked a package holiday and will be in the best possible position. They should wait to hear from their travel provider and will be offered either a refund or a chance to rebook for another holiday. Many Tour Operators will be keen to do that, well be looking at other destinations in europe. I am aware of cases whereby travellers were due to fly to spain and are now going to turkey, so they will still be enjoying a fantastic holiday. The uncertainty is difficult for but there are options. The people in spain now should carry on with their holidays and enjoy the holidays and those due to fly out as i say should wait to hear from their travel company and hopefully will still get to go on holiday. Lets talk about the difference between a voucher and a refund because obviously for the travel companies, for them, it is better when people take vouchers, but you are entitled, mostly, if you wa nt but you are entitled, mostly, if you want it, to a refund . Yes, if youve booked a package holiday, absolutely. I think what youre referring to is refund credit notes which are being offered to customers by many travel providers, and these are backed by the government now and they are a way of your fund in this sad eventuality if a company may go bankrupt in the meantime but those refu nd bankrupt in the meantime but those refund credit notes will entitle you toa refund credit notes will entitle you to a refund at a later date, before they expire, or the chance to rebook for a holiday at another time. What about people who have booked holidays and are now worried about that advice potentially changing in the next few days, in the same way we saw change in spain quite quickly, potentially that might happen with other countries, thinking about the spikes in france and germany, so what sort of situation are they and if they were to go back to the companies where they put those holidays . It is a difficult situation. Sadly, for the industry, if the government was more transparent about how it was making these decisions then businesses could better plan ahead and provide options for customers. What we are saying to customers is they need to be informed. I think everyone accepts that in this situation travel experiences are likely to be different. If people check on the Foreign Office travel advice first and foremost, before they go on holiday, and we would say also talk to your travel expert about what your experience is likely to be when your experience is likely to be when you are abroad. Sign up to fco travel alerts so that if the advice does change you will be away as soon as it happens, and also take a good insurance as well in case anything happens when you go, just to make sure you are covered as much as possible. On that insurance point, if you are somewhere now and the advice changes when you are on holiday, actually on holiday, does your insurance still stand . Holiday, actually on holiday, does your insurance still stand . So im aware that the abi has put out some information about this. If youre on holiday and have a policy in place that shouldnt change well you are on holiday. Many policies now cover you, are certainly some cover you now if you fall ill file on holiday or before, good policies that is. What a slightly more problematic is if the government changes its advice before you go on holiday, but if you booked a package holiday its a case of talking to your travel provider about your options, and possibly getting a refund or booking as an alternative, an option. I might do you think this year will change the industry and the way it looks on the way it works for ever . And do you think. I dont know about forever but certainly we have never seen anything like it. The past few months have been very difficult for the industry and continue to be. This change recently how short it will be uncertain, but also there is demand for holidays, you know, people want to go on holiday. People are going on holiday, so i think it will be a difficult road over the next few weeks and months, but there are many very good travel businesses out there doing extremely good work, looking after customers in very difficult circumstances and will continue to do their best to make sure people can go on holiday and have fantastic experiences. Listen, thanks very much for your time and taking those questions, thank you. To change tack completely. Are you one of those people who are annoyingly really good at tenpin bowling . No, im absolutely rubbish. Really . Do you put the sides up . I found something youre not really good at laughter fans of ten pin bowling will finally be able to get back on the lane on saturday, as alleys are allowed to reopen in england. However, parents of Young Children who are desperate for the chance to finally visit a soft play centre again will have to wait a little longer, as brea kfasts tim muffett reports. What is going to be different . We have reduced capacity in centres by 50 so you will have this whole bowling environment to yourself. We have fully cleaned all of the balls and customer touch points every day. We have extended the game by an additional two minutes to give our tea m additional two minutes to give our team members the time to do that with effectively. And if you want to wear gloves, you can . Filly optional, and we are providing them to people coming into the centres and at various different points throughout the centres as well as various different hand sanitiser stations fully optional. It is unclear whether the Hollywood Bowl sites in scotland and wales can reopen. From the 20th of march we have been placed with zero revenue and ongoing operational costs of 6 million a month, so it has been incredibly challenging, yes. Face coverings will be optional and bowlers can wear their own shoes. I hope your customers do a little better. You see, my four months of not going bowling dot like many bowling alleys this one in Milton Keynes as part of the Shopping Centre that relies on it to attract punters. The cinema and the bowling are the core anchors, the core te na nts, are the core anchors, the core tenants, that draw the footfall and for the restaurants and other retail operators around us. It is super important that we all open, even though some other centres will probably be loss making at the start. But a couple of miles away, an eerie sight. A silent, empty soft play centre. Whilst indoor play centres in Northern Ireland have been told they can reopen, in england, scotland and wales there is still no word. Gordon foster owns two sites and is convinced they could reopen safely. Two things. Obviously for cleaning and the social distancing, and we believe we can do both of those. We have a product from the cleaning perspective that keeps active on the surfaces for up to 30 days. In these play frames a lot of the pads are 1. 2 metres apart so they are self designated areas without even having to put on ropes so you can explain to put on ropes so you can explain to children and parents to keep either an obstacle or a pad apart. But surely it will be very hard to maintain social distancing in, say, a ball pit, for example . To be fair, a ball pit, for example . To be fair, a lot of the indoor play operators will just take the a lot of the indoor play operators willjust take the ball pits out, i think. That is what the government said, if that was the hurdle, if that was what they said, we would just take those out. Outdoor playgrounds are totally uncontrolled. There is nobody there managing the capacity, the cleanliness, anything like that, but we can deal with that in a very controlled environment. Every parent this Summer Holidays is looking for things to do with their children, and particularly on a wet day like today, it is challenging. If i am happy to take my children to a playground then im more than happy for them to come here because i know its cleaner and i know it is not going to get as busy as some of the playgrounds i have seen in the last few weeks. Watching netflix is one thing but youd much rather have your children running around a soft play. Better from an exercise perspective. More than 1000 soft play centres like this in the uk. At least 15 have permanently closed in the past few weeks. This is hugely frustrating. If you look at, you know, for us, this is about children staying active, ok . And the government are stopping children staying active, and if they dont allow us to open by the wind to the majority of these venues will close and they will close forever. An industry that thrives on fun and laughter, facing its biggest crisis yet. Tim muffett, bbc news, Milton Keynes. From balls to ultra running. Yes, very similar from bowls. In the past few hours, ultra runner carla molina ro has become the fastest woman to travel by foot from john o groats to land s end. The 36 year old completed the 874 mile journey in 288 hours, 30 minutes, and 14 seconds a total of 12 days, beating the Current Record holder sharon gayter, by more than 10 hours. Carla spent 16 hours a day running since she set off onjuly16th and didnt even take a break to celebrate her birthday. Huge congratulations. She looks absolutely exhausted. We were hoping to speak to her, but understandably she is incredibly tired. From one amazing feat to two more. Let us ta ke amazing feat to two more. Let us take you back. In 1989, mike hartley set the record for running britain s oldest, and toughest national trail, the pennine way, completing the 268 mile stretch in less than three days. More than 30 years later, his record has finally been beaten, not once, but twice after fell runner john kelly set a new record earlier this month, with friend damian hall knocking three hours off his time, a week later we can speak to both of them now. Some friend he is lets speak to them both now. We will start with your first, john, them both now. We will start with yourfirst, john, because them both now. We will start with your first, john, because you them both now. We will start with yourfirst, john, because you did it first. This record has stood for an enormous amount of time. When did it become an ambition to try to beat it . It is a record i kind of had in my mind since i moved here but it really kind of moved to the top of my list after doing a race this winter that does the trail in the middle of january. Winter that does the trail in the middle ofjanuary. Many people winter that does the trail in the middle of january. Many people have either known about or seen pictures are what themselves or some might have run the pennine way. Give an idea of the difference in terrain, because it is very different depending on where you are on the trail. Yeah. So it varies quite a bit. There is a run of bog, there are some scraps write down that make it nice, easy and runnable. For me the part getting used to is definitely running through the moorland and the bog and trying to find the right line through some of those less distinguishable spots on the trail. I was going to ask, how do you make sure you dont get lost . Laughter we have a gps with us, and also incredible support, people who come out with us to handle the navigation and keep us on our best line. You break this 30 year record, then damian comes along. Im not sure how long you thought it was going to last, but i know you knowjohn, damian, but the same thing for you, challenge youve wanted to do for a long time . Yes, sorry, john laughter yes, id been thinking about it for at least four years, to be honest. I had hiked the trail eight or nine years ago, and really loved it, and the history behind it and so on, then about four years ago i started thinking, you know, maybe i could run it, maybe, but it was such an intimidating idea and the record was so good that i would always put it off, basically, and do Something Else instead. Then because of lockdown, all the races are cancelled, and i was pretty much actually withjohn. We cancelled, and i was pretty much actually with john. We went on a training run in the Brecon Beacons andl training run in the Brecon Beacons and i think we were both realising how serious the lockdown was going to be in terms of affecting our racing calendar, and obviously more serious issues there as well. He was already committed to it and i did at the time kind of say, well, maybe if another race of mine gets cancelled imight another race of mine gets cancelled i might have a go as well. Yeah, we did briefly discuss going at the same time are going from opposite ends but ultimately these two kind of dates worked better for us. Do you feel bad about beating him, damian . I do, yes if you put it another way, he broke a record that stood for 31 years. I only broke a re cord stood for 31 years. I only broke a record that stood for a week. That doesnt sound as impressive, does it . Fight back a very generous way of putting it damian, you are not just running this trail, very arduous, but also picking up rubbish on the way . That is a very generous way of putting it yes, when you do these things you have to be fit, of course, but it is much more important, what is in your head, your why, what will keep you going in the middle of the night when youre stuck in a bog and you wa nt when youre stuck in a bog and you want to have a bit of a cry, so you need a bit of motivation. John was fundraising as well for the Stephen Lawrence trust at my motivation was sort of environmental causes and i tried to bring that into the challenge as much as possible, sol didnt use any animal products or create any plastic waste, and i thought, oh, we could pick litter up as we thought, oh, we could pick litter up as we go. There was a suspicion at times that maybe john had dropped a little bit behind him and maybe slowed me up. Laughter john, having had that record now taken away from you by damian, i know you are both very good friends. Do you think you will give it another crack . I might do, but it really ta kes another crack . I might do, but it really takes a large commitment, going for this length. It takes a big chunk out of your schedule in terms of both training and recovery time, and terms of both training and recovery time, and i think it will be a bit before damian and i are fully recovered from this. But it is something i would like to be sure that ive really given it my best effort, and thats the way these things go. You know, id be lying if isaid things go. You know, id be lying if i said theres not a part of me a bit disappointed in only getting to enjoy the record for a week, but at the same time we do these things to keep pushing the limit and keep pushing what is possible, and damian has set an exciting new bar and it will be great to go out and try that challenge. Ok, really, very quickly, john, what was your favourite food along the way . I had a lot of stomach issues on this particular run so. Ok. But once i got in the shiva eights, just a few hours from the end, my stomach finally cleared up the end, my stomach finally cleared up and the end, my stomach finally cleared up and i had an asda frozen pizza. Still frozen . Quickly, damian, what was yours . A lot of tea, and hummus and avocado sandwiches. White might get you ive always been a big fan of peanut butter, but you know. Thats the way to do it. Oh, get you is that your food of choice on your epicjourneys . It you is that your food of choice on your Epic Journeys . It is you is that your food of choice on your epicjourneys . It is 27 minutes past eight. Youre watching brea kfast. Past eight. Youre watching breakfast. Still to come. Well hear from the twin tv doctors who were making a documentary about life on the front line when one of them was struck down with covid 19. Well be discussing that shortly and bringing you the latest news and weather, but the time now is 8. 28. Now lets get the weather with carol. A lot of love for the 18 out there . Yes, and sta rsky a lot of love for the 18 out there . Yes, and starsky and hutch. For me it was particularly touch. I was only about eight watching that. Anyway, enough about that for me it was hutch. The sunny start to the day for many of us. Beautiful weather watcher picture from suffolk. Cloud in Northern Ireland but still a bright start and you will see some showers to the day. In fa ct will see some showers to the day. In fact many of us will because the forecast is sunshine and showers. Some rain in the north east and possibly another windy day. The strongest winds will be in the northern half of the country. But still quite breezy in the south as you can see from the proximity of the isobars. North east scotland, particularly around orkney, we can have strong to gale force gusty winds and also rain because this is where the low pressure is anchored. That is the low pressure that brought us all the rain yesterday. A lot of showers today across western scotland, north west england, Northern Ireland, wales, and a lot of these will blow over toward the east but equally a lot of dry weather, quite a bit of cloud around and these are the gusts trend of wind we are expecting. That kind of strength will mean although the temperatures are still disappointing this time of year, 15 to about 21 in the south, while we say that, it will feel cooler than that if you are exposed to the wind. Through this evening and overnight we start to see this low pressure move away and we can as the transient bridge of High Pressure builds in, settling things down including killing off a lot of the showers. There will be some clear skies and under those clear skies it will be a nippy night, especially so in rural areas where temperatures will be lower than you see here. These temperatures are really indicative what you can expect in towns and cities. Through wednesday this is a transient ridge of High Pressure. Hardly an isobar insight and barely a breeze but we do have a clutch of weather fronts coming in from the west. A lot of dry weather, variable amounts of cloud and we start off with some sunshine in the south but the cloud will build through the course of the day whereas in the north it will be cloudy with showers to start with and we will see some sunshine through the day. We have that clutch of weather fronts arriving, eventually bringing rain into Northern Ireland and also western parts of wales. That same set of fronts is going to be pushing northwards through the course of thursday, taking the rain with them, then we start to pull in Continental Air, but not how this weather front is very close to Northern Ireland. That is quite significant. We lose the yellows, everywhere is replaced by ambers, indicating temperatures are on the up, and we are looking at highs of 32 in parts of the south. I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow. Hello, this is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. After weeks of revelations and accusations in court about his personal releationship, johnny depps explosive trial is due to end today. Mr depp is suing the Sun Newspaper for libel over a 2018 article which labelled him a wife beater, a claim which the actor denies. Our entertainment correspondent David Sillito is outside the high court in london for us now. Good morning. What can we expect to hear from the lawyers today . Well, this is the very end of what has now gone into week three. These will be the closing speeches from johnny depps side. It is the end of an extraordinary two and a half weeks. Thejudge has had various times reminded people this is a libel trial, because sometimes it has not felt that way. What we have had his two sides of a relationship and two very different accounts of what that relationship was. Johnny depp has brought this case against the Sun Newspaper after they said he was a wife beater in a headline, he said he is here to restore his reputation. But facing him, everyday, arriving at pretty much the same time, his former wife amber heard he says no, he is a wife beater. She says he had assaulted her on more than 14 occasions. He said all of that evidence is a fabricated dossier, a hoax that has been created by her, and this is the case that will be brought today in the final submissions. It is looking back over an extraordinary amount of evidence. We have heard from so many witnesses, you hear about the names, almost a first name mentioned on day one was an e mail from eltonjohn, they talk about elon musk visiting penthouse apartment, james franco, paul bethany, we have had a window into hollywood. The other side of it is how do you decide between the two sides, because so much of this happened in private, there is only one witness who said they witnessed something, amber heards sister. So much of a taken place in private. When they mention a plane, it is johnny depp is my private plane, when they say it happens in a resort, it is johnny when they say it happens in a resort, it isjohnny depp is my private island. And the sheer scale of what people are talking about, there was an argument about a meeting that went badly and they said what happened at the meeting . Johnny depp said it appeared i had lost 650 million of my earnings. That was quite a meeting that was taking place at the end of this we have to try to reconcile, or the judge has to try to reconcile, two very, very different accounts. Johnny depp says, yes, it was tempestuous and volatile, yes, we had lots of argument, but i did not assault her. The photographs, the video recordings, the audio, he said it has all been concocted, this dossier, this hoax. Amber heard said it is all there, i was assaulted on more than 14 occasions. That is what thejudge has to more than 14 occasions. That is what the judge has to try to unravel, make a decision about. We do not expect a decision anytime soon, probably before september. Much to think about, thank you, David Silitto outside the high court where we will hear closing statements in that extraordinary libel trial that has been going on for the last few weeks. The olympics should be happening but that does not stop us from talking about it . It should have been day four of the olympics, a fourth Olympic Games for tom daley. I had a lovely trip to london last week to chat with him and learn about how he has been adapting to not being able to get into the pool. Aquatics centre is for the first time, but for the last month he has not been able to get into the pool and train and put the finishing touches on that olympic preparation. A year to go until the tokyo games in 2021. He told me that having a break from the pool really put things in perspective for him. Commentator nothing shy of perfect will do. Yes, it is thats going to be gold for tom daley yes lively synth music. Have you dwelled at all on the fact that, you know, you shouldve been competing now, this should have been the games . Yeah, its just a weird situation, i think, for everyone right now. And i, to be honest, the fact its been postponed a year and the fact that everything was, like, ground to a halt, its almost given me a sense of perspective on what actually matters most. And, you know, life can be so fleeting, if you like. So, to get an extra bonus year and a restart of an olympic year, it makes you really appreciate how lucky athletes are to do what we love every single day. I think the pandemics given us all that perspective, really. Whats life been in lockdown for you . In a london flat with a toddler, it must have been pretty hectic . Yeah, it was, it was hectic, but also, you know, everything has a silver lining, right . So i got to spend so much extra time on my son, with my mum because she was in lockdown with us as well and my husband. So being able to spend the extra time together, seeing robbie learn all of his colours, be able to count to 10, the alphabet, you know, just to see him develop you know, because in a normal year i would have been travelling here, there and everywhere for competitions, training camps, so getting that extra time with him has been something im so grateful for and its been so special. This kind of period of time out of the pool, i think, for me, is only really a benefit. Ive been able to rest my body, ive been able to rest my mind, ive been able to not hit the water at 35 Miles Per Hour and batter my shoulders, my back and all that kind of stuff. So, yeah, its been a long time, but its been a long time for everyone. And ive been taking it day by day and im excited to get back in the water. Crowd cheering. Commentator the roar that greets for the first time, the home favourite what are those memories for you of the london games . Its funny because the london 2012 games feel like a blur. Its hard to look back and remember. Like, when i see video footage of things im like, oh, yeah, i rememberthat. Whereas if i was to think back now, i couldnt really relay too many stories to you. Its so funny how adrenaline does that. Commenator oh, lovely well done 0h, goodness, that is it. World championship bronze, olympic place secured, job done. You are heading towards your fourth games. It was your dads dream as well for you to get to the olympics. He saw your first one, didnt get to see you compete in london because he died of cancer before then. You know, going into a fourth games, do you think. Yes . Even he would have dared to dream . To be honest, my dad was he was so kind, gentle, caring, supportive. Like, he was there to support me in any of my dreams. And without ever, ever putting any pressure on me to go and do it if i said i didnt want to go to training today, i didnt go to training that day. If i said i was, like, if i was having a bad training session, he wouldnt, like, without even saying anything to me, we would go and get ice cream. Just like Little Things like that, he was just so supportive, patient, and, you know, he would do anything for his family. And i think thats just a message for everyone, is that you never take your family for granted at any moment, because lifes too short for that. This years all about the process. Not getting too worried about what the outcome is going to be, enjoying the process, working hard, arriving into tokyo with no regrets, standing on that diving board and knowing i have done every single thing in my power to do the best i can today and what will be will be. Of course, it would be great to do really well, but i can only do what i can do and the rest will be history. Tom daley, sending even more positive than he normally does. He has not ruled out going to the next games after tokyo and paris and maybe even another after that. He says he can manage the pressure now because he has all these coping mechanisms, his family, his young son. Also knitting as well, he has discovered a love of knitting and he told me that during lockdown he is completing this 3d effect results Christmas Jumper with a standout nose and ears, so get your orders in exploration of studio there is knitting and there is 3d netting, thatis knitting and there is 3d netting, that is very impressive you can watch highlights of the previous olympics, i am watch highlights of the previous olympics, iam really watch highlights of the previous olympics, i am really missing watch highlights of the previous olympics, iam really missing it . Watch highlights of the previous olympics, lam really missing mm is all over bbc, there is a particularly lovely interview between tom daley and his mentor leon terryjon taylor who won silver at the athens olympics, you can spend hours on the iplayer and take a walk to memory lane. Thank you, we watch the 25 best olympic moments with gabby logan and Clare Balding with gabby logan and Clare Balding with the kids over the weekend. My kids had so many questions about the size of chris hoys legzdins sir steve redgrave. Liked, and sir steve redgrave. Liked, and sir steve redgrave. Liked, and sir steve redgrave. Steve redgrave was quite high in the list. Then getting their head around the fact that he had won medals at five different games, 20 years, an incredible achievement. Lockdown has meant many of us have started using video calls to communicate, and students have been taking lots of their lessons online. But not everybody feels comfortable with the format, and on screen conversations can be particularly challenging for people with speech difficulties, as sally hurst reports. 16 year old thomas has spent lockdown perfecting his basketball skills with his siblings and, like School Students everywhere, getting to grips with online learning. I am looking to go into science and do astrophysics or plant science. I really love the David Attenborough documentaries, and brian cox, so theyre a real. They are a real mentor for me. But his stammer makes communicating online difficult. The challenge i face the video calls is the. The unmuting on my microphone, with the Co Ordination of my brain and my mouth to speak, and also to make sure that people i dont interrupt people. It is a common problem for children and young people with speech difficulties. So when the way we communicate suddenly changed, when lockdown happened, we suddenly were only able to communicate on video. And that has allowed us to stay in touch, which is fantastic, but it does present some challenges for people who have communication difficulties. And one of those is the fact that it only relies on your face, and sometimes only your voice, and you lose a lot of the other ways we communicate using our bodies and our hands. And so, when you stammer, the anxiety around that can be more difficult. It is part of you, and you dont need to worry, and youre joining a very special group of people who have succeeded greatly, like, for example, Sir Winston Churchill and ed sheeran, stormzy and emily blunt. Famous faces who have embraced their stammer and followed their passions, just like thomas. Sally has reporting. Lets discuss this a bit more now. Were joined now by musharaf asghar. You may remember mushy from the channel 4 series educating yorkshire. Good morning. His stammer, and how he managed to overcome it, was one of the main features of the programme. How are you doing . Im ok, ivejust been working on my technique. Giving 0k. Been working on my technique. Giving ok. We heard from thomas and others talking about how difficult zoom, any form of video conferencing, can be with jo for people any form of video conferencing, can be withjo for people with a stammer, how has it been for you . M has been quite hard as a university student, it is quite hard. You have over 200 plus people who are also pa rt over 200 plus people who are also part of a lecture, and especially when it is based on a laptop, it is quite hard in order to answer questions or even ask any questions as well. Why is it hajj . Is it the pressure, or what is it that makes it really hard . Pressure, or what is it that makes it really hard . I would say it is the pressure of having to click on the pressure of having to click on the button and having to speak up. Why is it hard . You have 200 plus people also wanting to ask questions, it is quite hard to understand when you can actually speak and ask a question as well. And there is often hla on the line which makes more tricky . Often a delay on the line . Of course, some individuals who might have a stammer can find it quite hard individuals who might have a stammer canfind it quite hard in individuals who might have a stammer can find it quite hard in some situations a service a delay in the. Sarri, one of the things about giving any video call is you also have to watch yourself sometimes. Does that have an impact . In some situations it can be quite hard. Of course, normally when a stammer is talking they cannot really see themselves and i think it makes it quite hard, because of course you can see yourself finding it quite hard and i personally feel that for some stammerers it can be quite hard. What can make it easier, do you think . I think it would be a lot easier if we had certain limits on people in a video call. It would of course reduce the chances of stammering, of finding it quite hard to speak. The other thing i imagine make things tricky is so many places now, we are having to use face coverings. Does that make things harder . Yes, it is quite hard because of course, first and foremost, having a stammer is quite hard. And on top of the stammer you also have a face mask that you have to put on. So it really gets challenging because, of course, some stammerers find it quite easy if the person is able to figure out a certain word that the stammer is trying to actually get out and, of course, wearing the face mask makes afar course, wearing the face mask makes a far harder. Once you actually figure it out. Really quickly, if someone is talking to someone with a stammer, what is your advice to try to help if we can . I think, personally, the best way you can help a stammer is just to stay calm and patient. Essayist amara feels as if they are is a stammerer feels they are in a pressured environment it makes it difficult for them to speak openly and fluently. Really good to chat, thank you for your time. No worries at all. Take care, thank you. It is nice to see mushy again. Education yorkshire, i love that programme. During lockdown, six year old faith and her mother searched for magazines that represented children like her. When they realised there was a lack of diversity in publications for younger girls, they decided to design and print cocoa girl, the first ever uk magazine for black girls aged seven to 14. And theyve sold thousands as Amanda Kirton reports. Hello, my name is faith and im the editor of cocoa girl. Shes only six years old and is one of the editors for the uks First Magazine aimed at black girls. During lockdown, faiths mother went shopping for magazines to keep her daughter occupied. It was at this point that they realised there was a gap in the market. We decided to do a magazine which reflected her and other girls like her. A few mothers that have bought this magazine as a surprise for their daughter. Some of them have never seen a black girl on the front of a before. The front of a that before. This girl looks like me, because shes got those. Leading figures within the magazine industry are aware of the problems around diversity. I think genuine diversity is not just about a cover, its about a culture, and really using this moment as an opportunity to look at the brands that we work for, look at our teams and take some of the learnings from the past few weeks following the black lives matter movement. But after the tragic death of george floyd in america, it looked like the launch of the magazine was under threat. I didnt think that i could launch a magazine which tells black children that they could be anything they want to be when we had seen such a sad death. A lot of people were asking, what can we do to support the black community . And the response was amazing. There was one time when the magazine was selling a thousand a day. I was somebody that had been trying so hard to get into publishing from such a young age. I left the industry because there was always that Glass Ceiling that i couldnt get through. Im really, really happy and proud. The fact that selena has actually created a magazine for six, seven year olds who actually are picking it up and reading it, thats awesome. We are really concerned that, actually, if we dont look at how diversity in content is being tackled now forfuture generations, it means that actually maybe that six, seven year old wont pick up a magazine, they wont read that content because it not relevant to them. I knew she was struggling with what she looked like. This journey that shes gone on to love her hair, to love her skin tone, to love everything about herself is the most amazing thing that happened. Can ijust say something, mummy . If you are out there, friends, i want to say hi. Hi indeed. That was Amanda Kirton reporting. When it came to making a documentary on the front line chris and Xand Van Tulleken were a natural choice. But just before filming was due to start, xand tested positive for the virus himself and later became seriously ill. It made for difficult scenes in the programme. Well talk to both brothers in a minute, but first take a look. Machine beeps. Oh, its back at normal rhythm. Deep breath in and out. Well done, sir. Chris sniffles. Now we just wait until he wakes up. And that was it. Machines beep. How are you feeling . I wasnt expecting the flatline for quite so long afterwards. I guess you are used to it, but. Wow, we cut straight to the chase chris and xand who made a full recovery join us now from different parts of north london. Good morning, both. This is quite an extraordinary. I am laughing because you are ok, but there is a moment, chris. You are making a documentary about coronavirus, and unbelievably, xand, you were diagnosed before the documentary, and during the making you became seriously elegant. What happened . It isa seriously elegant. What happened . It is a virus that affects lots of organs, and seems to full quite a long time. I woke up at about 3am one morning with my heart going at about 160 bpm, and because i am a doctor i knew it was a rhythm called atrial fibrillation, so doctor i knew it was a rhythm called atrialfibrillation, so i phoned chris, had to go into hospital and had to get a shock to get my heart back into the right rhythm, then that happened 80 more times. I still have the problem but i am controlled on medication and i am hoping it might resolve as the symptoms of covid results. Chris, while your brother was going through treatment, andi brother was going through treatment, and i saw your reaction when he said he called you what you did not answer, what was it like to watch your 20 go through that . He has a young baby, to be fair one of my major bits of Health Advice to anyone is do not sleep with your phone by your bed. I try to follow that. My Health Advice that you should have your phone by your bed in case you have a heart problem chris, you were very emotional when you saw him go through this . chris, you were very emotional when you saw him go through this . I cant see the images you were playing but iremember it see the images you were playing but i remember it very clearly and i could hear the scene. Either is very surprised how affected i was, the procedure is very common, many of the people watching will have had defibrillation for atrial fibrillation, we do it relatively routinely and there are two conflicting emotions, my surprise at something that is routine, realising as clinicians, often as doctors, we do not realise the significance of things that we do everyday for our patients until the patient is your twin brother and there is a particular relationship between xand andl particular relationship between xand and i of great empathy, looking at him on the bed is to some extent looking at myself, watching the Anaesthetic Team prepare for the worst possible outcome, which of course they always do, which is exceptionally rare, reminded me what the worst possible outcome could be. At the same time, because, i was thinking that i was filming a documentary in my own hospital, University College hospital where i am an infection doctor, the documentary was to celebrate the work of the team and i was thinking this will be fantastic tv laughter. Iwas laughter. I was not thinking that. You two might have the same feeling, if there was a terrible medical problem with what if you are an air that is terrible, but you might be right, in the back of my head. What comes out of the documentary, i have watched quite a lot of it, on this programme we talk about this whole time, you can both respond but, chris, you go first, there is one thing having coronavirus budgeted the long term impact that seems to come across in the documentary that is striking. My colleagues at uch in london under other hospital throughout the country are setting up throughout the country are setting up passionist clinics to try to start to see the huge number of people, we know millions of people in this country have had covid, we dont know how many millions. Most of them did not get a test, did not go into hospital, so there is a group of people like xand who had all the symptoms, who had the syndrome, who now had very real medium to long term effects and we are just starting to understand that. One of the things i would like anybody watching the documentary to try to get is the different ways in which the virus affects your body and even if you are relatively young, 41 like xand, relatively fit, how the virus can affect you in ways that even as an Infectious Diseases doctor i dont think any of us understood when we first heard about it injanuary, understood when we first heard about it in january, february. You are nodding, xand . It was so striking filming and also to places for the documentary how long these effects we re documentary how long these effects were going on. Originally well talk about this is a flu like illness, it is not a just few but it is a respiratory thing, we were so worried about running out of ventilators but for now that big concern for me would be the burden on the nhs, lots of people did not need ventilators but are still struggling with the effects. Are you 0k struggling with the effects. Are you ok now . Yes, i think there is a danger on the one hand that we obviously want to talk about how serious the condition isnt how much it has affected lots of people, but i would not want to give anyone the impression that i have been more ill than i have. Iam impression that i have been more ill than i have. I am controlled medication, i might need an operation on my heart but of all the things could have happened as a result of coronavirus, this is a relatively. Quite a manageable one, iand relatively. Quite a manageable one, i and ok but it is kind of you to ask. Iam glad i am glad to hear you are better, thank you both for your time. Chris and xands documentary, surviving the virus my brother and me is on bbc one at nine oclock on august the 5th. Put it in your diary. Do you remember when i called you in the middle of the night by accident . It did not go down well middle of the night by accident . It did not go down well i remember we will be back tomorrow from six, see you. This is bbc news with the latest headlines.
