Lewis hamilton calls for all racist symbols across the world to be removed. The formula 1 World Champion has praised protestors for tearing down the statue of a slave trader in bristol. For trader in bristol. Most of us today it will be a dry for most of us today it will be a dry day with large amounts of cloud floating around but some sunny spells. The rain coming in from the north west through the day. All the details at 27 minutes past. Its tuesday june 9. Our top story. The plan for all primary pupils in england to go back to school before the end of term is to be dropped by the government. It means abandoning proposals for pupils from every year group to spend four weeks in school before the summer break. The education secretary Gavin Williamson is expected to confirm the decision to mps later today. Our education correspondent Sean Coughlan has more. Pupils in reception, yeari and year pupils in reception, year1 and year 6 began returning to schools in england from june one. They have been differences in what schools have been able to offer and figures published later today will show how many families took up places. Since the proposal was announced to bring back all primary pupils for four weeks before the end of term, head teachers have challenged the practicalities of accommodating them while expecting children to stay in small groups that would require twice as many classrooms. Whatever the ambition, school has said they simply do not have the space to fit eve ryo ne simply do not have the space to fit everyone in at the same time. The minister said plans were open to all yea rs minister said plans were open to all years but would only go ahead if it we re years but would only go ahead if it were feasible and they have now accepted that it is not. It means that many pupils already out of school for 11 weeks, will now be missing lessons until september. The head teachers union, the association of school and college leaders, welcomed the change saying the government had promised something that was undeliverable. Ministers are expected to say that schools will now have flexibility over how many pupils they can teach and that in the year groups that have returned, increasing numbers of pa rents a re returned, increasing numbers of parents are confident about sending back the children sitting but there will be concerns, particularly for disadvantaged pupils, about the long term costs of being so long out of school. Our Political Correspondent iain watson is in westminster for us this morning. Lovely to have you on the programme. A significant change, something that will affect millions of people this morning. What has prompted the switch . Purely practical because at the moment when children are going back to school in england they are in bubbles, as they call it, but to 15 pupils, half the normal class size in many areas. School areas have to be cordoned off so they do not mix that playtime and the government listened to the voice of teachers saying it will be difficult to achieve social distancing with more pupils and difficult on staff numbers. Some were saying if they we re numbers. Some were saying if they were forced to take back more pupils they would have to move to part time. So the government says 0k, flexibility if you can take in more pupils but there would not be an urgency nor a sense of of a move by the government to say you must start to prepare now to take in more children. It does mean that it will be september at the earliest for not just many secondary School Pupils but many primary School Pupils are back at school and even then social distancing remains in place it could bea distancing remains in place it could be a huge practical challenge. One of the other big issues at the moment is with the protests we have seen moment is with the protests we have seen recently and the Prime Minister recorded a video message following some of those protests across the country. First of all, what did he say and what does it all mean . What he wanted to do was position the government firmly on the side of those people who have concerns about, not just racism those people who have concerns about, notjust racism in this country be concerns about what happens in america. So he sent this video message to the voice newspaper aimed at the British Black and african communities and what he said the first of all was that he acknowledged the anger that people felt overseeing the death of george floyd in america. His dying words, i cant breathe, have awoke and a widespread undeniable feeling of injustice. A feeling that people from lack and minority ethnic groups do face discrimination in education, in employment, in the application of the criminal law. And we who lead and who govern simply cannot ignore those feelings because into many cases, i those feelings because into many cases, lam those feelings because into many cases, i am afraid, they will be founded on a cold reality. Boris johnson is also saying he felt that britons are far less racist country thanit britons are far less racist country than it was back in the 19705 although there is more to do but there was a second half of the m e55a 9 es there was a second half of the messages well. So while he says that 0k he can understand why people are protesting he emphasised that people mu5t protesting he emphasised that people must maintain social distancing on the protest because we are in the middle of what he referred to as a deadly plague. And also a stronger message, one which many of his mp5 we re message, one which many of his mp5 were looking for from him and message, one which many of his mp5 were looking forfrom him and he message, one which many of his mp5 were looking for from him and he was saying that if it is going to be damage to public property or attacks on police then people would feel the full force of the law. Great to talk to you. Thank you. Later we will speak to the care minister at 730 this morning. Meanwhile a private Funeral Service for george floyd will take in his home city of houston later. Thousands of people have been paying their last respects to mr floyd at a Memorial Service. 0ur correspondent jane 0brien has been following events. For several hours, a steady procession of mourners filed past the coffin of george floyd. The vast majority never knew him, but they all felt a deep connection to the man who has become a catalyst in americas struggle with race. It doesnt really hit home until you see it for yourself. Just to see his senseless body sitting in a casket, you know, knowing he was helpless, no one was there to help him with the police knee on his neck, itsjust its horrendous. To witness a person who went through a situation that was, you know unfairly his life was removed from him, just being a part of the history meant a lot to me. This is the last public gathering in honour of mr floyd before the private funeral. Just being here and thinking about my brother. He is a gentle giant who had his life taken away when it should not have been. He should be here speaking on behalf of somebody else right now. Former Vice President joe biden has met with the family but wont attend the service. In minneapolis, meanwhile, the city where george floyd was killed, the white Police Officer charged with his murder appeared in court via video link. Derek chauvin was remanded in custody and bail was set for 1. 25 million. And in washington, lawmakers took a knee as they discussed legislation that would make it easier to prosecute Police Officers accused of misconduct. A majority of americans, black and white, now say that Police Reform is an essential First Step Towards social justice for African Americans. There is certainly momentum. And as george floyd is laid to rest, real hope that change will come. Jane 0brien, bbc news, houston. Lets speak to our north america correspondent peter bowes, whos in los angeles this morning. Lawyers for Prince Andrew have rejected claims by us prosecutors that he has not co operated with the inquiry into sex offender jeffrey epstein. In a statement, they said the prince has offered help on at least three occasions, but the us authorities have challenged him to prove his offer to be interviewed as a witness is serious. Sean dilley has more. Prince andrew has been under intense pressure to co operate with us authorities who want to talk to him about his friendship with the late convicted sex offenderjeffrey epstein. He was asked in his newsnight interview last november whether he would co operate. At that point he seemed unsure. Im. |m. |m not. And i. I would have to take all the legal advice, um, that there was before i was to. To do that sort of thing, but if push came to shove and the legal advice was to do so then i would be duty bound to do so. But when he withdrew from royal duties more than six months ago, he said he would answer questions from any appropriate us Law Enforcement agency. His lawyer spoke out for the first time yesterday after a leakfrom the us revealed a formal request to uk authorities. In a statement they said in response, the us prosecutor in charge of the investigation, geoffrey berman, said thats an offer a lawyer for some ofjeffrey epsteins alleged victims says he should now take up. Prince andrew is not going to be able to draw this out forever. Every day that goes by has been putting more pain on the victims. So its time for him to step up and say, heres the date, heres the time, heres the place when i will answer any and all questions from the department ofjustice. Us Authorities Say the duke will not be extradited to america, but if he does not voluntarily respond to their formal legal request he could be forced to answer questions in a uk court. I met floyd on the sixth grade in the middle school, i was in the cafeteria waiting for the school bell to ring on the door to the cafeteria opened up and in walks in this skinny, 6 foot two young man and when i first laid eyes on him, i thought, that was a tall kid. The school bell rang. When i went to my first class, he was in that class. This score tall skinny guys 12 yea rs this score tall skinny guys 12 years old . This score tall skinny guys 12 years old . Its this score tall skinny guys 12 years old . Its unbelievable. That was the beginning of a long friendship and from that point, in middle school, we played foot basketball together and he was just an exceptional player at an early age. I can remember in the eighth grade, we were 1a, we were playing ina game grade, we were 1a, we were playing in a game and he got a steel and a dunk and we were reallyjust loan away because he now dunked a ball in away because he now dunked a ball in a competitive game same from the point, we went to high School Together and still painful all and basketball together and we both won championships in both sports and i played some varsity but floyd played on the varsity and he was a tight end and he learned the game even more, he got stronger and faster, his athletic game continued to flourish both in football and basketball. As he said, youve known him fora basketball. As he said, youve known him for a long time and you sent that picture through to us and its quite clear, you described him as a gentle giant. He is the huge guy on the left of that photograph. As i understand it, you last spoke to him on your birthday. What do you remember about that conversation . Backin remember about that conversation . Back in january, he remember about that conversation . Back injanuary, he sent me a text. Talking about the memories we had in middle school and high school and he told me that he is now in minnesota working on trying to spark his career. He told me he loved me and then after high school, we started referring to each other by our names and a high schooljersey numbers. With love from 88, which was his jersey number. That was the last communication i had with him. And you were attending the Memorial Service yesterday. You are going to private funeral later today. What have you made of the extraordinary reaction. Even though there are many people who didnt know him personally, he became important to so many. Its almost surreal for me. 0ne so many. Its almost surreal for me. One of the things that transpired, contemplating, remembering. I remember the last day of school, we we re remember the last day of school, we were kind of hanging out and just kind ofjoking, having a good time in the conversation shifted to thinking about our entrance to manhood and going off to college, and life getting realfor us manhood and going off to college, and life getting real for us and we talked about college. And he made a statement that really stuck out. He said he wanted to be big, he wanted to touch the world. Maybe i can become an nfl athlete or a league star but then i saw recently he had an Instagram Post. He said hey, this is floyd, checking in, letting you know im doing 0k. Dont count me out. I want to touch the world, i wa nt to out. I want to touch the world, i want to have an impact on the world. It was almost a prophetic statement. Now, fast forward, his touching the world but not in the way we would ever contemplate or even dream that he would do in this manner. Giving up he would do in this manner. Giving up his life to reach and touch the world. Jonathan, thank you so much for spending some time with us on brea kfast, for spending some time with us on breakfast, sharing recollections of the man you knew so well from an early age we hope today goes well when you attend that funeral. Thank you for sharing some memories of your great friend, george floyd. Thank you for your time and thank you for the opportunity as well. Lets take a look at todays papers. Shes made a remarkable recovery. Robert is a physiotherapist and helped karen regain her strength. See someone to stand, begin to walk is great and to see her discharged from hospital that is yeah, yeah, its what its. It makes it all worth it, of course. I sort of basically manage and oversee everything that goes on the ward. And it was justin who wheeled everything that goes on the ward. And it wasjustin who wheeled karen out when she was finally discharged. When you seem so poorly that you dont know if they are going to come back again, it sort of shakes me up speaking about it now but to see her husband there and her kids shouting from the car and, you know, it makes the job, thats the great part about the job, thats the great part about the job. It makes all the hard work and difficult times worth it. Karen is now back at home, still recovering, but finally with her family. Trixie is ok outside. Ijust wa nt to family. Trixie is ok outside. Lets just one story. The incredible work that the nhs is doing. Thank you to karen and everyone else. Now lets get the weather with carol. There are no flies on you. The many of us, it will stay dry today. A couple of weather fronts. Showers around berkshire. There will be some sunny breaks developing. We will also seek cloud thickened across Northern Ireland. We will see rain coming in. As we head the evening and overnight. Still a bit of cloud around, clear skies as well, maybe the odd shower. Temperatures for most of us, not as cold as the night just gone. Were looking at figures in the south. Eight, nine, ten as we push further north. Tomorrow can we pick up our band of rain. Sinking south. Ahead of it, likely to see showers in the south east and some of those could be heavy and sundry as well but in between like today, quite a bit of cloud but sunny breaks. You a eight you can see the weather front wrapped around it with the isobars so there will be rain during the course of thursday across southern areas. And it takes a second swipe, moving south and then it will move north once again. Dont forget those isobars, it will also turn windy. There are echoes across the south west of england towards the south west of england towards the Channel Islands and another system across southern england will also bring in some rain and temperature wise while we are looking at a to about 18 degrees in the south, drier across scotland and Northern Ireland but such use. Looking at 12 17 degrees. Then as we head into the weekend and friday, still u nsettled head into the weekend and friday, still unsettled in terms of showers and longer spells of rain but the wind changes direction so we are putting in more of an easterly, dragging in some humid airfrom the near continent. Despite the fact there will be showers around it is going to be warmer and we will also feel that humidity in the air as well. Dry conditions across the north but here at times, excuse me, we will also see quite a bit of cloud. Now, last week we were asking if you would vote for our weather watchers pick of the season and bless your hearts you have and thank you very much. Thank you to everybody who took part as well. These are the temperatures for the north of the country which we should have shown you. Lets have a look at this. Before i reveal the winner we should also say that our bbc weather watchers did a sterling job because it is very difficult during locked books through their windows and also in their gardens so, again, thank you for doing that. Lets see who warm. The pick of the 2020 spring photos. This picture here from cumbria. You can see the beautiful full moon here rising above the horizon, also known as the flower moon, the last super moon of the year. Carol, i knew it would be spectacular but that is just incredible and also very difficult to ta ke incredible and also very difficult to take a picture like that so thank you very much to everybody who sent in pictures. Carol, ifind that terrifying. It looks like the this picture. Thank you very much, carol. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Plans to get all Primary School children in england back into the classroom before the end of the summer term could be abandoned. The government had aimed for all primary pupils to spend four weeks in school before the end of the school year. Some reception, year1 and year 6 pupils are already back at school. The education secretary Gavin Williamson will give an update on the plans later today. A private Funeral Service will be held today for george floyd the man whose killing by Police Officers in the us sparked anti racism protests across the world. Thousands of people have paid their respects at a Memorial Service in the city of houston, where mr floyd grew up. Speaking to mourners mr floyds brother described him as a gentle giant. The duke of york has tried to falsely portray himself as co operating with an inquiry into sex offenderjeffrey epstein, the us prosecutor in charge of the investigation has said. Us authorities have insisted that Prince Andrew has repeatedly turned down requests to arrange an interview as a witness. The princes lawyers have insisted he has offered to help three times. Now its time for our regular chat with a gp. This morning were talking to dr Richard Bircher whojoins us from stalybridge. Thank you for the questions you send in. Good morning to you, doctor and thank you for dropping by this morning. Yourfirst thank you for dropping by this morning. Your first appointment of the morning, live on television. When we speak to our gps,i like to know what sort of things are going on in your surgery at the moment. Can you give us an idea of how things have changed . In the last few weeks it is fair to say we have gotten busier. I think people at the beginning of lockdown was superb and giving us space to deal with all the people but after six or eight weeks, a funny rash or a painful knee, they are beginning to think that they cannot wait any longer. So we have gone up again to pre lockdown levels which makes it more difficult because it all has to be done via video or the telephone. Because it all has to be done via video or the telephonelj because it all has to be done via video or the telephone. I think that will probably be the way that many practices go down in the future and how we see the industry change may be. On the issue of when people ask questions of view, i am sure they are also concerned about the health of people in their family and the children as well. I wonder what the thoughts are this morning, we will speak later to the government about this change in policy of risk schoolchildren returning before the end of term. Anything that will impact on not only families but on some of the questions you asked as well about the health of children . am asked questions all the time about people should go back to work or do their daily activities again and children is another one as well. Ithink. And children is another one as well. I think. Returning to school would be fantastic for some parents who are desperate to get their children out of the house for an education and other children parents are fearful, especially those with long term conditions. They worried about their child going to the school, catching the virus and then coming home again. So i think it is complex, depending on what sort of household you live in. complex, depending on what sort of household you live in. I was reading andi household you live in. I was reading and i yesterday which was commented on by parents from all over the uk, talking about one mother mentioning the Mental Health impact of not seeing friends for her child and it was interesting to see so many people commenting and feeling that their children were in the same position. Is that something you have spoken to your patients about . have seen a lot more Mental Health coming through. I would not be surprised on my telephone screen in the morning now if it says a dozen people also with Mental Health problems who are struggling because all the normalfabric problems who are struggling because all the normal fabric of society that keeps you sane, going out, seeing people, playing with your friends, that has all been eroded so people are finding it very difficult. Not specifically about children but certainly teenagers have found it tough and young adults, well, especially those sitting out in life and looking for jobs and there are no jobs out there at the moment, they find it very difficult. I wonder what sort of questions you get as well about the importance of social distancing. We talk today about an attempt to get the Hospitality Industry restarted and the difficulty of maintaining that two metres. In germany, that distance is 1. 5 metres and in places like norway it is down to one metre. What difference with the proximity make in terms of the infection . M makes an enormous difference. The major thing we have had to control this virus is keeping distance from people. It is a hallmark of how we treat this until we get a vaccine. It causes complications. In my building at work we have people working from home and most people in the building and across the building we have crosses on the floor for staff, not patients but staff. The back, there is a limited number of people who can enter a room. We can only have four people in our meeting room. There are crosses on the table. For where you have your lunch. If you sit down and there is no cross, you cannot sit down there. It affects my work, personally. So running a factory or a Primary School with small children dont understand social distancing, i think that would be really difficult. And i mentioned germany and norway, isuppose, International Comparisons in mind, i know you do work with a charity in africa, how would you compare the way things are being dealt with here today . Every single country in the world is in a unique situation. I am a chair of a charity called uganda schools, a fantastic charity. It does what it says on the can, helps schools in uganda but we have had reports of those children where families have no savings and there is no social protections, no benefit system, no fellow scheme and quite literally if they cannot go out and work they cannot afford food. So the policies for lockdowns from the countries across the world are starting to help is making it difficult for others to access food and security. Great to talk to you this morning and we know you have a busy day ahead full thank you very much for talking to us. Talking about 1 way systems at work. We do have a system like that here at the bbc and we got stuck in the building yesterday. We could not get out of. The lifts only go up, could not get out of. The lifts only go up, you have to go down the stairs. We dont need stickers to know where we have two sit. We must remember to walk off in separate directions as well. I just want to get views about the plan for Primary School children in england to go back before the end of term, the end of the summer term, that plan being dropped. What is your view on that stop let us know because we will speak to a head teacher about that and the child rens speak to a head teacher about that and the childrens commissioner a little later. Many comments about that for you and if you follow the 1 way system in our building here you cannot take the lift two floors down but you can take the stairs. Good morning, sally. Did you find this stairs . I look for them yesterday. I got lost as well. this stairs . I look for them yesterday. I got lost as well. I was two floors below louise and i heard her asking if she had found the way out. I had to return, come back up. We did eventually leave the building but it was comical. Good morning. tried to find you both yesterday but i was lost in the maze. And i think many people working at the moment in similar positions trying to find their way around a 1 way system and keeping the system going. As ever we hear more and more from sportspeople over the last few days commenting on what is happening in the world at the moment. One person who has been vocal as Lewis Hamilton who has given his support the antiracism supporters who pulled down the statue of a slave trader in bristol on the weekend. Writing on social media the six time formula 1 World Champion says that all racist symbols across the world should be removed peacefully. Hamilton says that if protestors hadnt pulled down the statue of Edward Colston then it would never have been removed, and it shouldnt be recovered. Meanwhile Raheem Sterling says the only way to make progress in the fight against racism in football is for there to be more black managers. The Manchester City and England Forward says the protests are a good starting point, but there needs to be greater change within the game. That is an interview that he gave on newsnight last night. Womens golf makes a comeback in britain next week, and its got a new big name backer. Justin rose and his family are sponsoring a series of seven tournaments that will allow the best golfers in the country to play competitive golf sooner than expected. Liz young is a professional on the ladies European Tour and is one of the organisers of the rose ladies series. Good morning to you. Good morning, sally. You must be delighted. How did this come about . It is a great thing. During lockdowns, myself and jason mcnevin we thought that we would like to get girls back outcompeting and may be golf would be one of those that would be first out of the blocks so we put this idea together that back to Old Fashioned pay £125 to enter, all that money would go when the prize pot and 18 hole shootout and the winner would take the prize money. So that got released in a telegraph a week on sunday and luckily enough justin and kate rose picked up on the story, gave me a call and thought it was a great idea and wa nted thought it was a great idea and wanted to get behind it and support the womens game. That also means you will be out on the course sooner than you expected was how are you going to manage the situation around playing golf and the restrictions . Obviously organising the event is difficult enough but it is harder under covid 19. It is behind closed doors like in the guidelines for professional sport. We will have temperature checks and questions asked at the gate. We will follow the two metre rule. Luckily a golf course is one of those places where you can socially distance easily. Only the caddie will be allowed if they are from the same household so that stops the problem of having issues with the caddie too close to the player and it will be a great event. Have you noticed that women sport in particular seems to have suffered during lockdowns . I know they are particularly looking at womens football. Many people have spoken out saying that the lockdown seems to have affected them disproportionately. How important is it for you to get back out there and play . It just seems the itjust seems the same old same old, men get to play, women dont. Women sport is always behind the men. And we do need a mail sport start to get behind us. Hes put us in the spotlight. Lets hope other sports can do that. Andy murray has done it with tennis. Lets hope other sports will have that backing from a mail counterpart. Its justin will have that backing from a mail counterpart. Itsjustin and his wife. Do you know what motivated them in particular to help you . I spoke to kate last sunday. She is particularly annoyed about the women sports, being on the back foot. Obviously their families into golf, golf is the perfect opportunity for the family. And get behind it, really. Liz, we wish you the very best of luck. Its great to see the things are starting to move board for youths. Amazing, a lot of talk about that yesterday in the same with andy murray with tennis, it does make a difference. That sort of support from the mens game can hopefully make a big difference. Support from the mens game can hopefully make a big differencem the roses are donating £35,000. Its a lot of money and for them, its a gesture that is going to open up the doors for the women who can go out and play these tournaments. We will see were bit later on. Us prosecutors have accused Prince Andrew of trying to falsely portray himself as willing to co operate with their investigation into the convicted sex offender and former friend of the duke of york, jeffrey epstein. Legal representatives for the duke say he has offered to speak with them, as a witness, on at least three occasions this year. Were joined now from los angeles by Gloria Allred, the lawyer representing some of epsteins accusers. The princess been quite clear to his lawyers, saying his offer to speak to them three times. What is your response . I think Prince Andrew at this point has very little credibility. I have a lot of suspicion about what hes saying. I dont have the same suspicion. He is sincere that he wants to be able to interview and ask questions. Prince andrew, this is being dragging on. I myself sent a letter to the home of Prince Andrew, evidence that it was received last december. Tooth please speak to the fbi. We had a bus circle Buckingham Palace with a big photo of Prince Andrew. Earlier this year. Saying anyone who would see him, please ask him to call the pi. Still, he is not done it. It should be conditions or delay. There should be conditions or delay. There should be transparency and the victims deserve the truth. This is very painful for them. Deserve the truth. This is very painfulfor them. While deserve the truth. This is very painful for them. While Thejustice Department is firing, Prince Andrew and its representatives, they are firing back. He was caught in the crossfire, the victims. They are in pain. Theyjust crossfire, the victims. They are in pain. They just want to crossfire, the victims. They are in pain. Theyjust want to know crossfire, the victims. They are in pain. They just want to know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about who they have conspired with Prince Andrew to sex traffic them and other underage girls. That is all they are asking. Iam reading, girls. That is all they are asking. I am reading, and you would be aware of the statement by the lawyers, it is unfortunately, the department of justice have reacted to the first two offers by breaching their own confidentiality rules and saying the duke as offered zero cooperation and they are seeking publicity rather than accepting the assistance proffered. Just questioning the motives of the prosecutors. Ijust think thats meaningless in this situation. Let him step up to the bar ofjustice, take the oath and just tell the truth. Its as simple as that. Trying to deny, try to evade the questions, its really not helpful at all. We have that expression in the law, justice delayed is justice expression in the law, justice delayed isjustice denied. It is never more true than it has been with Prince Andrew. Here is a gentleman who actually gave a long interview to the bbc last year and now of course, we know know that is not under oath, you could have said anything. But when he talks, he needs to tell the truth. Why is that so difficult . Thank you very much, Gloria Allred and we will speak to our royal correspondent later about this. Just a repeat, the lawyers have made a clear statement yesterday, that he has offered to help. There is some disagreement. Nickel offer us a bit more analysis for that. Thank you for your comments about change of plan. We will read some of those out. And speaking to the care minister about that and other issues at 730 this morning. Millions of people have been forced to borrow more during the past few months storing up possible debt problems for the future, this is according to a leading charity. Seans looking into this one for us this morning. How serious is this problem sean . Some of the numbers are huge. There will have been a lot of conversations going on between people and their mortgage providers, carfinance providers, landlords and much more. This research from the Debt Charity Stepchange reflects that. In a survey of a000 adults in may, theyve found that over four Million People have had to borrow more to make ends meet since the beginning of lockdown at the end of march on a credit card, overdraft or using high cost credit. The average amount of extra personal debt from the beginning of lockdown to mid may was just under £1000, with a similar amount owed in arrears for things like missed rent payments or utility bills. About 70 of those affected said they were not in financial difficulty before lockdown. And the charity is worried that if the support that has been offered by the government so far stops abruptly, or if people face redundancy, then people may face a cliff edge of large debts and no means to repay them. That is something that sarah in bristol is worried about. Shes a healthcare profession and is facing a sudden drop in income and is worried about what they will mean for her debts. Lam one i am one of many thousands of people in the vulnerable category and ive been shielded since march. Ive also been shielded since march. Ive also been lucky enough to have company sick play but this is coming to an end. Its very up in the air but in all likelihood, it looks as though i will end all likelihood, it looks as though i willend up on all likelihood, it looks as though i will end up on statutory sick pay by the end of this month. I struggle with debts in the past and i am really worried how this over 50 drop in my salary is going to affect my ability to manage my finances. Do we know it all when support runs out, sean . The supporters been good in the past few months for people whose income disappeared. Yes, some of the initial support schemes around jobs and housing in particular have already been extended. Weve heard from the treasury that theyre going to support that Job Retention scheme, orfurlough scheme, subsidising wages until october. Theres one more self employed grant available from august. The deadline for applying for a mortgage holiday has been extended to the end of oct you can get up to six months, but you do have to pay it back with interest. If youre behind with rent you cant be evicted before september as it stands. But some of the schemes havent been extended yet. Today the government is saying it will put forward £38 million for charities helping those with their finances Stepchange Debt Charity says this highlights the rocky road ahead. All these schemes and deadlines weve talked about, they are not much good if you dont have the conversation with who you are owing money to. Make sure you have that conversation or you could be building other problems for yourself. Sean, thank you. We will be looking at that later. Some of the comments you been sending in. About the Primary School plans. Lets have a look. These are hot off the press. Margaret says, what is going to happen about gcse. Children missed out on so much face to face teaching. Sharon, why cant children go back at the beginning of august. In scotland, they are due to go back on the 11th of august. Kirsty says i think this is sensible. Zoe makes an interesting point, a lack of information from parents who are shielding we start the new year in september. My son really needs to go back to school. Alan says anyone on furlough refusing to send children to school should have their furlough sent immediately. Why should the tax smack taxpayers keep funding them . Thank you for those. We will be speaking to a head teacher later. Are they puppies . Good morning. I think they are. Good morning, everybody. Look at this blue sky. Justified. Many of us starting off ona justified. Many of us starting off on a white note, either with blue skies or indeed a fair bit of cloud around. We will see some rain later. I pressure is stilljust clinging on. Weather fronts coming i pressure is stilljust clinging on. Weatherfronts coming in on i pressure is stilljust clinging on. Weather fronts coming in on the north west. Rain and strengthening winds through the day. Showers from berkshire. Often large amounts of cloud. Cloud through Northern England, down through the midlands and central and southern england. Cloud of Northern Ireland in western scotla nd cloud of Northern Ireland in western scotland and some rain will also arrive. Temperatures today tend to about 19 Degrees North to south. This evening and overnight, a band of rain moves across scotland and Northern Ireland, heading eastwards and starts to come in across parts of Northern England and north wales would want to showers ahead of and again, a lot of cloud around tonight that there will be some clear spells and temperatures falling to between seven and eight in the north and about ten and 13 is become further south. As we head into tomorrow, there goes our rain, pushing across scotla nd there goes our rain, pushing across scotland and Northern Ireland, sinking south, again some of this is going to be heavy and have that, showers across the south eastern quarter. These two could be heavy and thundery. In between, some sunshine developing but still quite a lot of cloud around. The temperature is 11 16 the hi. Low pressure dominating the weather by then. You can see how it deepens and sinks southwards as we move wednesday to thursday. That low pressure is going to bring this a period of persistent rain. Dont forget pretty windy. The rain goes south across the southern half of the uk. Across the Channel Islands and through thursday and friday. You can also see we got feature bringing rain into Northern England, southern scotla nd rain into Northern England, southern scotland and Northern Ireland. Thats where we are likely to see the driest and brightest of those conditions. What about the weekend . A close look at friday. Looking at showers. Again, a fair bit of cloud around the wind will have changed direction so we are starting to bring in more humid conditions and it will continue as we go through the weekend. That is it from me. The headlines are next. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today no school until september for millions of children in england as the government drops plans for all primary aged children to return before the summer holidays. Thousands of mourners pay tribute to george floyd in his home city of houston, as the Police Officer charged with his murder appears in court for the first time. Staycation refunds. The consumer watchdog steps in to help customers who are still waiting to get their money back. The west Indies Cricket team will touch down in manchester in the next hour. Theyre the First International sports team to travel to the uk since the start of the pandemic, ahead of the test series against england. Its tuesday june 9. Our top story. The plan for all primary pupils in england to go back to school before the end of term is to be dropped by the government. It means abandoning proposals for pupils from every year group to spend four weeks in school before the summer break. The education secretary Gavin Williamson is expected to confirm the decision to mp5 later today. Our education correspondent Sean Coughlan has more. Pupils in reception, year1 and year 6 began returning to schools in england from june 1. There have been differences in what schools have been able to offer and figures published later today will show how many families took up places. Since the proposal was announced to bring back all primary pupils for four weeks before the end of term, head teachers have challenged the practicalities of accommodating them while expecting children to stay in small groups that would require twice as many classrooms. Whatever the ambition, School Leaders said they simply did not have the space to fit everyone in at the same time. The minister said plans to open to all years but would only go ahead if it were feasible and they have now accepted that it is not. It means that many pupils already out of school for 11 weeks, will now be missing lessons until september. The head teachers union, the association of school and college leaders, welcomed the change saying the government had promised something that was undeliverable. Ministers are expected to say that schools will now have flexibility over how many pupils they can teach and that in the year groups that have returned, increasing numbers of parents are confident about sending back the children sitting but there will be concerns, particularly for disadvantaged pupils, about the long term costs of being so long out of school. Send us in your thoughts about that, we have been discussing it all morning here on breakfast. Boris johnson says he understands the depth of emotion felt by antiracism protesters. In a video he warned that attacks on police or would not be tolerated. Ian watson is in westminster and he listened carefully to the Prime Minister. What is the most important thing about what he said do you think . He had two messages. The first and the predominant thing he wanted to get across, i think, predominant thing he wanted to get across, ithink, to predominant thing he wanted to get across, i think, to people who were feeling angry and frustrated about what they had seen in recent days was that he understood their feelings and he understood how they felt when they saw the death of george floyd in america. His dying words, i cant breathe, have awakened and angerand words, i cant breathe, have awakened and anger and widespread incontrovertible, undeniable feeling of injustice. A feeling that people from black and minority ethnic groups do face discrimination in education and employment, in the application of the criminal law. And we who lead and who govern simply cannot ignore those feelings because in too many cases, im afraid, they will be founded on a cold reality. Borisjohnson also will be founded on a cold reality. Boris johnson also making will be founded on a cold reality. Borisjohnson also making it clear that here in this country he believed that britain had become a less racist Society Since the 19705 but there was a lot more to do. Two parts to this message, the second pa rt parts to this message, the second part is one that appeals more to some of his own conservative back inches, who have been pressing the Prime Minister to come out and Say Something after the weekend protest and he said that those taking part in the protests should maintain social just wincing in the protests should maintain socialjust wincing otherwise the deadly virus, the deadly plague could have a second spike that would affect black and ethnic minority communities disproportionately but also anyone who attacks please public property will feel the full force of the law and the labour leadership have also been clear that they do not condone violence. Thank you very much. In the United States, a private Funeral Service for george floyd will take place in his home city of houston later. Thousands of people have been paying their last respects to mr floyd at a Memorial Service. Our correspndent jane obrien has been following events. Jane obrien, bbc news, houston. Sean dilley, bbc news. German authorities have appealed for more information as they continue their investigation into the disappearance of madeleine mccann. He also reiterated that they had to have several hundred calls in germany since the appeal. In the uk there have been a00 calls with information, with e mails and so far not enough, we are told, hard evidence and they have interviewed the suspect. Not unusual in germany and we are told that will take a few more days after they have gathered the information. And that is govern with the very latest on that investigation. Britain is about to pass a significant landmark in Energy Production tonight it will be two full months without burning coal to generate power. When britain went into lockdown, electricity demand plummeted and the last coal generator came off the system at midnight on april ninth. Just a decade ago, more than a0 of the countrys electricity came from coal. This is bbc breakfast and lets get a discussion on our main story here this morning. The question of when it is safe to reopen schools. It has been one of the most debated issues faced by the government during the pandemic. Worries about safety in classrooms and concerns over the long term impact has been raised. Lets speak now to the childrens minister and long field and a head teacher. Thank you for being with us this morning. Mark, first of all. Give us an idea of what sort of things you had put in place and what we now know will affect those preparations that you have been trying to make sure are in place for the return of children. Good morning. We have worked hard and i know colleagues have in all settings to put in place bubbles and zones to keep children of different ages and different year groups separate from each other. We have reorganised routers and staffing routers, reorganised all of the playtime and lunchtime rotors and we have made sure that the bubbles do not mix. A famous phrase of do not burst a bubble. That is across the schools and we have worked hard to make sure those groups can stay completely separate all the time so we heard today that the government is not expecting all peoples to return in england, in Primary School, before the end of the summer term will somehow does that affect you and your plans . Mixed emotions, really. Firstly it is a sense of relief, in a way, that we do not have to try and implement something that would have been impossible to implement in the first place because, literally of the size of the buildings, the classrooms, the number of stuff that we have. But that is tempted with the fact that we want to see our children return to school and we need to see them back in school and this is a difficult position for eve ryo ne this is a difficult position for everyone to be in. It certainly will test pa rents everyone to be in. It certainly will test parents and test schools as we try and carry on working in this set up. And long field, what do you make of what seems to be a change in plans . It is a huge disappointment for those children who expected to go back to school for the summer and now may not. It does mean that the vast majority, are very likely not returning to the classroom until september which means that, again, there will be a huge variation in their learning over that period and children who remain isolated, many will also be living with those Fragile Family environments we have heard of. I think there are two things. First of all, when we look at wales, they are running a very different model where actually children are coming into school for third of the week before the summer which i think is interesting and governments should look it. The other is that children will still need to enjoy this. And there will be mitigation to compensate and the fact they are not in school to on line earning. Potentially catching up and helping them emotionally. I am the commissioner. Not the childrens minister. Lovely to have you on this morning. We should also point out is louise did earlier, these measures we are talking about are specific to england. Different dates to returning to school. The Daily Telegraph are talking about what matt hancock was saying. I think this is deeply worrying. Even though this. Before july, it would be and ambition get children in, i think a lot of people, including parents need to be able to work and bought the school from september would be kind of the new normal. I think now we can see september is approaching on these clear signs that the practicalities of the issue, there wont be enough classrooms or teachers were children or to be at the same time. If we get the same level of rules than actually, children are going to have to have some time out of school. I think thatis some time out of school. I think that is an immense change. Its disruption like weve not seen since the second world warand one war and one that really needs what matt hancock called yesterday, that creativity and ingenuity. Weve seen the great things that can be achieved whenever one put their mind to it. The Business Continuity scheme, the nightingale hospitals. Its the scale of challenge and determination that government needs to focus on. Mark, ijust that government needs to focus on. Mark, i just want to become that government needs to focus on. Mark, ijust want to become up on a few things. This will be echoed across schools. The size of the buildings, the size of the classrooms. There are so many things that need to change. What are your priorities to get all the pupils in your school back . Just like my colleague has said, under the current guidance, that simply cant happen. All School Buildings are built, around 30 children, you need a member of staff that group of children. Bubbles of 15 children mean we would have to double the size of the schools in the classrooms. It just wouldnt size of the schools in the classrooms. Itjust wouldnt be able to feasibly happen. The government very clear at the outset. Some children in, some children out wasnt their preferred model. We are going to have to work out a way of making sure we hit more children get more children into the school, and that could well be remotely or through other means. As it stands, many children will not have gone to school since march till the beginning of september. Our concern to you about the long term impact on their education and well being . To you about the long term impact on their education and well being . to you about the long term impact on their education and wellbeing . I am incredibly concerned. We know there isa incredibly concerned. We know there is a real variation in learning. We have some more affluent children, especially those going to what are essentially zoom schools from nine until three oclock and we know 90 of many children are not going on line for more than two hours and we know there are about a million children who dont have the technology or broadband to be able to learn this way so these are children where the education divide is broadening almost a decade of catching up if you like on that education gap may well be lost. Children are isolated, missing the ends, real Mental Health concerns and also concerns about safeguarding when they are at home. This is something which is a major consequence at the same time we are seeing theme parks and the like will be reopening. So is childrens education. A generation of children will leave school in five years time and have much more prospects because they need to learn during this period. Those are the thoughts on many peoples minds. Thank you both very much forjoining us. Schools in wales will reopen from the 29th of june schools in wales will reopen from the 29th ofjune to all age groups for limited periods during the week. Schools as we said earlier and to reopen at the start of the autumn term and some Northern Irish pupils will be going back in late august and there will be a day s will be going back in late august and there will be a day 5 return. The plan is for the rest of those pupils in september. Thank you for your comments. My son really needs to go back to school and doesnt understand the maths videos, his teacher would normally go over things ten times. Support echoed by lots of people. So many different points of view. Get in touch and we will be speaking to the government about that and other things shortly. Lots to pack in this morning. With most pubs and restaurants across the uk closed since 20 march, the hospitality sector has been deeply hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Pubs and restaurants in england have been preparing to reopen from the fourth ofjuly, but the government is under pressure to suggest an earlier date due to huge job losses in the industry. So far across the uk, hospitality businesses have only been offering takeaways or home deliveries. There is no firm date yet for when scotland, wales and Northern Ireland will allow the reopening of pubs and restaurants. Our reporter holly hamilton is at a pub in st helens this morning where preparations are being put in place. Even for me at this time being at the pub is a bit early. Since all the pub is a bit early. Since all the bars and restaurants and pubs closed, this goes quite to the top of the list but thirsty customers may not be top of the priority. The Hospitality Industry is really suffering. There is talk that 3. 5 millionjobs could be suffering. There is talk that 3. 5 million jobs could be lost so its easy to realise there is so much pressure on the government to get the Hospitality Industry going and thats what were talking about this morning but the question is, what needs to be done to make it safe . Lets speak to the landlord here at the cricketers arms, andy. You can talk through some of the measures to make this place safer for when it reopens. Social distancing work, its not really viable for pubs to do that. Were going to be operating a one way system so its entrance only by the pub, exit by the rear. There will be hand sanitising, beer gardens around the bar area. If needed, because we got a lot of seating space, we are blessed with three different beer gardens. We got an outside bar which we can utilise and setup. We are hearing from night licensing, there might be an option of setting up a marquee on the car park or outside. Youve already started all this. Weve got this idea in england of the fourth ofjuly, the this idea in england of the fourth of july, the date this idea in england of the fourth ofjuly, the date that you would reopen. Will you be ready . We will be ready. A lot of subcontractors coming in. Weve got the infrastructure here in the facilities in the staffing level. The problem of god is, with the restrictions and the challenge which we are going to try and embrace and create a busy environment, im getting a bit sidetracked. You mentioned earlier on, this two metres rule. This is two metres at the minute. It could be very difficult to sustain when youre trying to serve drinks. There will be designated serving areas around the bar. Standing and drinking will not be at the bar, so that will be easy to manage. We will try and keep it that way. Its hard to imagine a time when we will not be propping up the bar. You know the oldfashioned pubs, we had the serving bells. Obviously technology, there is no easy way of putting something in place. Designated servers within the bararea, place. Designated servers within the bar area, people are going to bear by the rules. The fourth ofjuly to england, no such date yet further Northern Ireland, scotland and wales. I have to admit, this is the only alcohol i will be having today. Dont drink it very sensible, holly. Its nice to see the inside of the pub. I love pubs. If youre one of the many home schooling parents in need of a little extra inspiration help is at hand. Like most i read about him at school and did a bit around like most i read about him at school and did a bitaround him like most i read about him at school and did a bit around him at university but it was only when i went to live in america in 2000 four where i really began to understand his impact and significance on the culture of that country and beyond that country. Its remarkable to think in 196a that the Civil Rights Act was passed which prohibit a inhibited discrimination and segregation in school and in 1965 the Voting Rights act prohibited all those obstacles which stopped African Americans those obstacles which stopped african america ns voting. 1965. Those obstacles which stopped African Americans voting. 1965. I remember when we were covering the inauguration of president barack obama. He said he was standing on the shoulders of doctor Martin Luther king because doctor Martin Luther king because doctor Martin Luther king because doctor Martin Luther king had brought about the Voting Rights act in 1965 so in 2008, and African American could be elected president of the United States. It was living there and breathing in something of his impact that i really began to understand. Who and what dr king was. Let us look at some of the questions people are asking you. I, martin. Its sophia. Did Martin Luther king jr. Achieve his dream . Thats a good question. He certainly achieved the dream of equal rights for African Americans dream of equal rights for african america ns but dream of equal rights for African Americans but his desire for us African Americans but his desire for us to have equal treatment and justice for everyone is something i think we can keep working for today. Lam martin, think we can keep working for today. I am martin, i am lillian. Think we can keep working for today. Lam martin, lam lillian. Do think we can keep working for today. I am martin, i am lillian. Do you know of any other influential people from history . Barack obama will be someone we reflect on historically but Winston Churchill is someone i would encourage you to study, think about and read about. Kids always ask the best question. It seems very pertinent at the moment, as we are discussing this, and the subject matter we look at school. As you mentioned there, most of what we know, you discovered for yourself when you are living in america. Its going to be a really interesting topic debate going forward, isnt it . I think it is. We know that role modelling and heroism is an important part of growing up. My hero growing up was a french Rugby International called jean pierre reed, back row forward, diminutive who appeared to be covered in blood every game. And for me but if you are never taught the significance and value of someone like dr king, whose real impact on society and culture has been immense, then you do limit kind of vista of your own aspirations. I think there is a lot of work that has been done in relation to the National Curriculum because people want to learn about their backgrounds. My parents came to this country in 1951 from pakistan. I was never taught anything at a level or gcse or indeed university. About the partition of india in 19a7 about the impact of the british empire, about the heroism of so many people from india for example, that a Victoria Cross was one of the First World War by an indian soldier and that resides still in rawalpindi. All of those heroic narratives which can feed communities of colour, particularly, just didnt really come into things when i was at school and it was obviously a millennium ago and things have changed but i think the point you are making is its a very good one. I think the other thing i would want to share about dr king, a lot of historians have said doctor Martin Luther king was principally a visionary but he was looking to the future, he talked of course about the arc of history bending towards justice but one of the most interesting things about dr king was that his philosophy was actually based on an ancient idea and the idea was simply this, that each individual is created in the image of god and that means that each individual has value, has purpose and has rights and that ancient thought became something he deployed in the modern world. , i had a brother who had muscular dystrophy and he sadly is all children with muscular dystrophy died of this condition. And i remember this most appalling prejudice. And there will be people literally mimicking people with Cerebral Palsy and that level of stupid and foolish discrimination is right and actually, what dr king said. About being made in the image of god applies to every person regardless of status, wealth, power, sex, gender, sexual orientation, it doesnt matter, that singular truth comes through everything he ever wrote. And thats way so inspirational and it was such a privilege to be part of this. You have given us quite a good lesson this morning so thank you very much for coming on to talk to us very much for coming on to talk to us about it. Thank you for the opportunity. Celebrity supply teacher, weekdays on cbbc. Lots of other brilliant lessons as well. Carol can catch us up now with the weather. Morning. As you can see from this picture there is a lot of cloud around and notjust in edinburgh. For many of us today we will see a lot of cloud, sunny skies as well and we will also be looking at rain coming into the north west. High pressure still dominates our weather but after today low pressure will take over and we have two other fronts coming our way, is bringing in some rain through the course of the day and night. First thing this morning there is a lot of cloud around, there are sunny breaks in that cloud as well and through the afternoon we will see some showers across Northern England towards the pennines, central and southern england but they will tend to be isolated. As you can see here in the child, most will mist them and you will either have big lumps of cloud or bright and sunny breaks. Showers in Northern England and we have the thick cloud and rain coming in across Northern Ireland and western scotland. Eastern scotland can catch the odd shower with sunshine. Temperatures ten in the north to 19 as we head down towards the south. Through the evening and overnight our first weather front continues to journey eastwards, taking rain across scotland out of Northern Ireland and across Northern England and north wales. Then we see signs of the second weather front ringing heavy bursts of rain. Again, cloud around with sun breaks and overnight between seven and 13 degrees. Tomorrow we say good night of the first band of rain, the second one comes our way and it could be heavy and potentially thundery and we could see thundery showers in the south east as well. In between today, a lot of cloud, sunny breaks asi today, a lot of cloud, sunny breaks as i mentioned in highs of 11 16 and thatis as i mentioned in highs of 11 16 and that is disappointing for this late injune. That is disappointing for this late in june. Quite disappointing. That is disappointing for this late injune. Quite disappointing. Thank you, carol. Will all lets speak now to the care minister helen whateley, who joins us from her constituency in kent. Morning to you and foot in us. If we could talk first of all about the plans to get Primary Schools, all primary School Pupils in england back to school before the end of this term, how have they changed and why . What we said at all times was following scientific guidance on what is a safe thing to do in the right thing to do and that was that we wa nted right thing to do and that was that we wanted to try and get Primary School children back to school but a lwa ys School Children back to school but always being clear that that had to be done step by step and carefully and the context, for instance, the overall infection rate and also recognising that it is not easy getting to back to school as people have rightly said, asking children to social distance is not a straightforward thing to do. And so we saw that schools began to go back last week for children in reception and in year1 and i think we will be hearing more later today from the education secretary about the plans over the coming weeks. But what we do know is that on one hand wanting to be careful and we do not want to ta ke to be careful and we do not want to take risks that might increase the infection rate but also, knowing that as children are not in school, it is not a good thing for any child and it is particularly, for those children who are more disadvantaged, particularly a problem being out of school and that the gap can widen so it is trying to get the balance right between those things. Has something changed in the science or is it that the government has realised it is not possible . As i said, i expect we will hear more later today from the education secretary but what we know so far is that we have seen some children who have gone back to school and we have seen that working for children in reception and in we get children backin reception and in we get children back in school as and when but it is not something easily done. You must listen to the teachers and the head teachers have to do this. You are a pa rent teachers have to do this. You are a parent yourself. This is very difficult time for people at homeschooling their children and also concern, as well, there is so much to balance about children going back to school safely. Such a confusing message from the government pick you are actually right. I have two children who are in primary and i know it is not straightforward to be doing homeschooling and i know that some pa rents a re homeschooling and i know that some parents are finding it really, really ha rd to parents are finding it really, really hard to do and it has been in group, the children of key workers at those that will have. We want to get more children back but it has to be done step by step and at the right time in the right way and, as isaid, we right time in the right way and, as i said, we will hear more later. We will look forward to that and we will look forward to that and we will cover it on bbc breakfast tomorrow. In a general sense, we spoke to ahead teacher in the last half hour and they said that if the two metre social distancing guideline is in place, given the size of the buildings on the size of the classroom, it will be impossible for him to get all this pupils back to school. We are right to listen to the teachers at the head teachers who are doing this in practice on the ground stop we take a particular approach which is recognising that Young Children will not be able to socially distance so they will be taught in small groups so they offer a bit more like a household, coupled with Infection Control measures and hand washing and wiping desks and things like that. But absolutely recognising that this is not easy. The School Environment is not an easy environment in which to make sure that you do not have any risks and what we absolutely must work with the teachers and head teachers as we do this to get it right. Is Gavin Williamson also going to talk about secondary schools today . We heard matt hancock sang at the earliest they may go back in september and it was an indication they may not all return in september to we want to get secondary schools back children in secondary schools area bit back children in secondary schools are a bit more able to do Home Learning but not quite the same challenges as there are four children in the very early years of school. But, actually also really important for older children to be at school and it is a mental hills challenge for children not having the social contact as well as the importance of being in school for education. As i say, as you said in fa ct, education. As i say, as you said in fact, i do not wish to pre empt the secretary later. You are care minister and involved in hills as well we know that now we have the numbers, 137,000 people attended protests all over the uk, sparked by the killing of george floyd. We understand a further protest planned today, the Prime Minister has spoken about this concern about social distancing with those protests. What would you say . It is such a difficult question because the anger. The anger that people feel about the killing of george floyd and the police in america of course it isa and the police in america of course it is a moment that will change peoples reaction and the right to protest is such an important peaceful protest, an important part of being in a democracy. The problem we face right now is that it coincides with the pandemic and how we absolutely, now we have managed to get the infection rate under control and we have coronavirus on the retreat. We dont want anything to happen puts that at risk and the risk of the infection rate. And so the problem with protesting is that it is hard to do that in a socially distance way. So what would be better if people can find ways to protest that do not involve coming together in large numbers, just because we do not want the pandemic to ta ke because we do not want the pandemic to take off again and we want to keep it under control. The Prime Minister also talking last night to the voice and he talks about George Floyds last words, this dying words. The widespread anger and the undeniable feeling of injustice. He also goes on to say that we in government cannot ignore those feelings because in too many cases they are founded in cold reality. What is a government going to do about what he refers to as the cold reality . As you say, in the Prime Minister 5 words, they are reflected, the anger of this particular, what happened to george floyd, also the feeling, underlying, of ongoing discrimination injustices. Our thinker countries much better now than it was a few decades ago but there is still discrimination, there is still under justice and we must tackle this. Right now, the equalities minister is following the Public Health england report into the impact of covid 19 on different ethnic minorities to get to the bottom of that and understand how we can tackle those risks but of the whole society this is absolutely discrimination and injustice cannot be accepted and we must make it better. Thank you very much for your time. And as we spoke about in the interview, Gavin Williamson is due to make comments later today on what is the plan for Primary School, particularly in england as well. And you will be able to follow that on bbc news and as was said during the interview, i am sure it is something we will cover again tomorrow. So many people watching and so many watching at home, they are very concerned about what is going to happen. Which we are finding out via e mails and all the messages being sent to us today. Were also talking about this morning with sally. A Little Development to tell you about. The west Indies Cricket team are due to arrive in the uk any minute now theyll be the First International sports team to fly to britain since the start of the pandemic. Theyre flying into Manchester Airport ahead of their test series against england which starts next next month. All the players were tested for coronavirus before they left and there were no positive results. The team will spend three weeks in quarantine in a hotel at old trafford, which is one of two bio secure grounds being used for the series. They land any minute now. Lewis hamilton has given his support to the anti racism protestors who pulled down the statue of a slave trader in bristol at the weekend. We have no representations of us in hiring. No representations of us in coaching staff. There are not a lot of bases we can relate to and have conversations with. I do think with these protests that are going on, its all well and good just talking, but its time that we need to have conversations to be able to spark debates, and notjust debates because weve done a lot of talking, to actually start implementing change. And its a significant morning for clubs in the third and fourth tiers of english football today, as finally they may get a resolution to ther season. Clubs in leagues one and two will meet for an extraordinary general meeting to decide whether to play the rest of the season behind closed doors, or scrap it and decide promotion and relegation by a points per game method. But in league one, the clubs are divided on the best option. One way or another, there should be some kind of resolution today. Thats going to mean significant decisions for clubs at the top and bottom of those leagues. We will give you all the information tomorrow on this programme. Anyone who has had their trip cancelled by the Company Vacation rentals is now entitled to a full refund, after the consumer watchdog stepped in. Seans across this one whats this all about sean . Good morning. Thats right. We have had people get in touch with us we have had people get in touch with us about variety of travel issues, airlines, packages, accommodation. The competition in markets authority are looking at holiday accommodation in the uk. Vacation rentals runs a number of popular website including cottages. Com. It has agreed to refund anyone who booked one of its properties but couldnt stay because of the lockdown. Not vouchers, not credit notes, thats cash refunds on the way. Lets speak to george lusty from the competition and markets authority now. A lot of people will be wondering, what did you say to Vacation Rentals that made them agree to give full refunds to people . This is a great result but ultimately the cma has to e nforce result but ultimately the cma has to enforce consumer law, is there to protect people and we are really pleased Vacation Rentals did the right thing. Other businesses have not yet. Also that we are prepared to take him to court. Is it as simple as if you bought goods are a service and it was cancelled because of the coronavirus crisis, youre entitled to your money back . In the vast majority of circumstances, if you couldnt use the services because the lockdown prevented you for the business cancelled them, you are entitled to a refund. The law is very clear about that. When it comes to how quickly people should be able to how quickly people should be able to get their money back, the company said you could have a refund, you have a timeframe that people now should be seeing that money going into Bank Accounts . Vacation rentals has given us a clear formal commitment. Its been published on the website and they will make Information Available on the websites and social Media Channels as well. Everyone affected i should clarify if people want to accept a voucher or rebook their holiday, thatis voucher or rebook their holiday, that is ok but they should always be offered a cash refund. At the moment, people saying you cant get a cash refund for a good few months now. What you to them . We recognise these completely unprecedented circumstances. In many cases, a large numberof circumstances. In many cases, a large number of holidays staff have been furloughed and the need to bring them back. We know its tough but there is a lot more support out there for businesses than there is for consumers and families have lost out, potentially many thousands of pounds on summer holidays. They need that money back, they may not be able to go on holiday this year because of their own personal circumstances. Its really important those firms respect the refund rights and process them as quickly as they can. Does that mean you would say to customers, have a little bit of grace for those businesses out there, some of those on the brink, a lot of them struggling with cash flow as it is. No one wants to see the firms go bust but ultimately people are entitled to their money back. We have huge sympathy for the circumstances that a lot of firms find themselves in but ultimately they do need to pay this money back to people who in many cases cant afford to be out of pocket. Thank you very much. Maybe a bit of the boost to the argument for so many consumers out there and a reminder to businesses that we do a people a cash refund if they wont able to receive those services. Regulators continuing to investigate many areas of the Holiday Market as im sure we will hear of the many changes to come in the weeks and months to come. If youve looked up at the sky recently you may have noticed some stunning cloud formations and skylines. As we take more notice of the Natural World around us, the Cloud Appreciation Society say they have seen a boost in membership since lockdown started. The founder of the society, gavin pretor pinney, joins us now. Can you describe your background to us, because i understand youve founder to put behind you. Thats one of your own pictures. What you like about that background . This is just a background of somerset skies. We are based in somerset and ijust stepped outside and took a beautiful picture of some cirrus clouds, high, wispy ones and when they are lined up wispy ones and when they are lined up lines like this, they are known as cirrus fibratus. If i remember from geography, is cirrus latin for here . Welljohn, it is latin for a lock of hair. My only piece of cloud information, i got it out early on. I wasnt aware there was a Cloud Appreciation Society. What is the attraction for people at the moment . Well, the skies one part nature that comes to us in the clouds are what give variety and drama to the sky. If youre in love down, looking up to the sky, its something you can do even if youre in a tower block, an urban environment, if you have a small view in the sky and you dont have lots of space outside, its a pa rt have lots of space outside, its a part of nature that we can all initiate. We will inhabit the atmosphere, we live within the sky, not anything so you only have to stop and realise it is the most dynamic and part nature. Its one of those things, when you stop and look at the world around you, when youre ina park at the world around you, when youre in a park and look at the sky. People are laughing at me but im not alone in this, there is that sort of appreciation of inns you can see, sort of painting pictures in your own see, sort of painting pictures in yourown mind, see, sort of painting pictures in your own mind, arent you . Yes, because the one thing you end up becoming blind to is something that is always there and the sky is a lwa ys is always there and the sky is always there. It is ever changing, but it is ever present. That reason, its easy to become blind to it, it is easy to become blind to its beauty. So ive always argued, and at the Cloud Appreciation Society, weve always argued its worth tapping yourself on the shoulder, remembering if you can each day to spend a few moments with your head in the clouds because it helps you keep your feet on the ground. It is good for your well being to be engaged with nature. That is increasingly obvious from scientific research. The sky as ive been arguing isa research. The sky as ive been arguing is a part of nature that is arguing is a part of nature that is a resource that is ever present for us and so its particularly valuable during the down. You mention the old cirrus there. Do you have a favourite cloud formation . Are you a fan of the cumulonimbus. Cumulonimbus the storm cloud, reaches may eight, ten miles up into the sky, it gives us the phrase to be on cloud nine because in a list of cloud types, there were ten types when the system was earlier, the naming system and cumulonimbus was number nine, the tallest cloud. Naming system and cumulonimbus was number nine, the tallest cloudm that right . What a fantastic act. Can you give us another cloud. I get the feeling you have them ready. got this up my sleeve. One example would be a typical cumulus cloud, that fair weather clouds, they form ona that fair weather clouds, they form on a sunny day. An average medium size one of those, if you we re medium size one of those, if you were to weigh up all the droplets of water in it, add them together, they would weigh about the same as 80 elephants so they look light and fluffy but the water in them is not slight. My mind has been slightly blown by your cloud facts this morning. Keep your head in the clouds to keep your feet on the ground. Lovely. Thank you very much, gavin from the Cloud Appreciation Society for enlightening us. That is where being on cloud nine comes from. Isnt that lovely. Carol doesnt have her head in the clouds but she does look at them. There is plenty of cloud around today. You can see a beautiful start to the day in Northern Ireland, some fair weather cloud around and we also have a lot of cloud generally across much of the uk with rain getting to the north west. If you havent allergy to grass pollen, in england and wales, the levels are high or very high for most. So heres the rain coming in from the west already. Just across the outer hebrides, cross Northern Ireland as we go through the day, that will continue to push eastwards. We got to weather fronts, this one bringing the rain at the moment. This one will bring in more rain. High pressure is clinging on today the last day this week. Low pressure will take over from tomorrow. A lot of dry weather around, a lot of cloud times, there will be a lot of cloud, some sunny spells developing and also showers developing across Northern England, the mid things and down towards southern england. If we pick up the rain, you can see its not moving the singularly quickly but will be driven east across scotland and also eastwards across scotland and also eastwards across Northern Ireland. Showers as i mentioned across Northern England, the midlands and down towards central and southern england but the rest of england and wales, mostly dry again with some sunny skies developing here and there and temperatures, ten in the north to 18 in the south. This evening and overnight, the first weather front continues its journey moving east across Northern Ireland, scotland and Northern England and in the second one comes in right behind it, that will also bring in more rain. As we push further south, largely dry, still a lot of cloud and some clear skies with temperatures falling between eight and 13 degrees. Tomorrow, ourfirst weather front continues to the second one follows on behind and some of the brain and that will be heavy. We will see some thundery showers develop across parts of south east england. Rather like today, a lot of cloud around with some sunny breaks developing and highs between ten and 15 or 16. Thursday, low pressure deepens as it sinks south and its going to take this persistent rain with this across southern counties in the Channel Islands. Behind it, showers or showery outbreaks of rain, mostly across england and wales but that could clip southern scotla nd wales but that could clip southern scotland and possibly Northern Ireland but the brighter and drier conditions will be further north and east you travel and on mate, that same east you travel and on mate, that 5a m e syste m east you travel and on mate, that same system is going to start to move north once again, bringing more rain with it and still some rain across Northern England and southern scotla nd across Northern England and southern scotland and also Northern Ireland is the brightest skies once again will be across the far north of scotla nd will be across the far north of scotland here too, temperatures between 11 and 18, 19 further south. Friday, starting to import some humid out in the near continent and that will continue as we go into the weekend with some of us getting temperatures into the low 205 and celsius. It doesnt necessarily mean its going to be settled, there will be showers around. That is it from me for now. The headlines are next. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today no school until september for millions of children in england as the government drops plans for all primary aged children to return before the summer holidays. Thousands of mourners pay tribute to george floyd in his home city of houston, as the Police Officer charged with his murder appears in court for the first time. Rapper Tinchy Stryder will tell us what he thinks about the decision by one record label to stop using the word urban to describe all music of black origin. Its tuesday 9th june. The plan for all primary pupils in england to go back to school before the end of term is to be dropped by the government. The education secretary Gavin Williamson is expected to confirm the decision to mp5 later today. Our education correspondent elain dunkley is at a school in barnton in cheshire for us this morning. Good morning, i know we have received so many messages about this news from parents this morning and it is interested to interesting to see the change from the government. It has been a difficult time forfamilies, government. It has been a difficult time for families, weighing government. It has been a difficult time forfamilies, weighing up government. It has been a difficult time for families, weighing up what is best for their kids. The whole issue of schools has been sticky for the government when they announced that children in reception, yet one and g6 were going back, they were met with fierce opposition from teaching unions and some local councils around issues of safety. At Barnton Community nursery and Primary School, children should have been coming back to class this week but the head teacher called parents on friday to tell them not to come in because there was concerns about the rate of coronavirus in cheshire, the rate of coronavirus in cheshire, the latter are numbered. It has been a really difficult time for teachers and families. Coronaviruses has radically changed the way schools operate, classes of no more than 15 children, staggered break times and lunchtimes, what the government has had to accept is it is unrealistic to have all year groups back in Primary School for a full month before the end of the summer term. The care ministerfor before the end of the summer term. The care minister for england, helen wa keley, the care minister for england, helen wakeley, said the care minister for england, helen wa keley, said it the care minister for england, helen wakeley, said it is a balance between education and safety. We know that on the one hand we are wanting to be careful and do not wa nt wanting to be careful and do not want to take risks that might increase the infection rate, but also knowing that as children are not in school, that is not good for any child and it is particularly for those children who are more disadvantaged, particularly a problem to be out of school and the gap can widen, it is getting the balance between those things. And, of course, that means that millions of course, that means that millions of children will not have been in school since march 20 and are unlikely to be back in classrooms until at least september. Teaching unions have said the government has over promised on this and this could never realistically be delivered. The government says they are not scrapping the plans, they are taking pressures off schools and allowing teachers to find the way forward. That is england. In wales, schools are due back onjune 29 and in august. And Northern Ireland. Really good to talk to you, elaine dunkley, ata good to talk to you, elaine dunkley, at a school in cheshire. Thank you for all your comments on that. Borisjohnson has said he understands the depth of emotion felt by anti racism protesters in the uk, following the death of george floyd. In a video message for the black newspaper the voice, he warned that attacks on police or property would not be tolerated. Our political corespondent iain watson is in westminster. What was the Prime Minister trying to say . There is next messages in a sense, he said he wanted to see more fairness for those from black and ethnic minority communities but also give firm warnings to the protesters and social distancing, for example there were mixed messages in a sense. But he said he understands the feelings of those worried about the feelings of those worried about the death of george floyd. His dying words, i cant breathe, have awakened an angerand words, i cant breathe, have awakened an anger and a widespread and incontrovertible, undeniable feeling of injustice, a feeling that people from black and minority ethnic groups do face discrimination in education, employment, in the application of criminal law. And we who leads and who govern simply cant ignore those feelings, because in too many cases, im afraid, they will be founded cold reality. Boris johnson also said he believed britain was far less of a racist country than in the 19705, great progress has been made that there was a lot more to do. Labour say they want to see action, notjust words, from the Prime Minister. But there were words designed to appeal to some of his own conservative mps who were keen to hear from the to some of his own conservative mps who were keen to hearfrom the Prime Minister after a weekend of protests and some violent incidents. He made it very clear that people should still be taking social distancing, not to do so in the midst of a deadly play, as he called it, with disproportionately affect black and ethnic minority communities. He also said those who attacked the police and public property would face the full. The law. In the middle of a deadly plague, as he called it. Prince andrews lawyers have rejected claims by us prosecutors that he has not co operated with the inquiry into convicted sex offenderjeffrey epstein. Legal representatives for the duke say he has offered to speak with them, as a witness, on at least three occasions this year. Us authorities have insisted that Prince Andrew has repeatedly turned down requests to arrange an interview. Well get more details on this story with our royal correspondent, nick witchell, in the next half an hour. A private Funeral Service will be held today for george floyd, the man whose killing by Police Officers in the us sparked anti racism protests across the world. Thousands of people have paid their respects at a Memorial Service in the city of houston, where mr floyd grew up. Earlier his friend jonathan veal told us how hed remember him. I saw originally he had an Instagram Post and he did a live video on that post and he said, hey, this is floyd, just checking in and letting you guys know im doing 0k. Dont count me out. I want to have an impact on the world. It was like the first time he said that, when we were seven years old, it was almost a prophetic statement that he made. And then, now, fast forward, hes touching the world but not in the way we would ever contemplate or even dream that he would do in this manner, having to ultimately give up his life to actually reach and touch the world. The ex policeman accused of killing george floyd has made his first court appearance. Derek chauvin was filmed kneeling on mr floyds neck for nearly nine minutes. Just a decade ago, more than a0 of the countrys electricity came from coal. A museum in cambridge has taken life in lockdown to a new artistic level by reimagining how some of the subjects in its paintings would be protecting themselves during the pandemic. The masterpieces 2020 edition at the Fitzwilliam Museum features five well known portraits with added protective masks. Theyre now being sold as cards to support the museum during its closure. Im still look very striking indeed. And they look. When the statue of slave trader Edward Colston was toppled by anti racism protestors in bristol on sunday, it raised questions about whether its appropriate for cities to mark the lives of colonial leaders. From glasgow to liverpool, monuments, statutes and even streets bear the names of controversial figures from history. Breakfasts tim muffett has more. Confronting the past, head on. That coming down today hopeully signifies change, hopefully weve sent a message. Edward colston, merchant, slave trader, a man whose statue was dumped on sunday into bristol docks. Cheering. Ciara is from speaking statues, which raises awareness about britains colonial past. Whats your reaction to the pulling down of the statue in bristol . Joy, to be honest with you. This was a simple symbolic moment that showed britain that we need to acknowledge our colonial past and recognise the fact that this is a slave trader who made his money off of trading black people, and he was still up in the 21st century. It beggars belief. What about the way that the statue was pulled down . Was that correct . If people are angry about the way it was pulled down then i ask them to recognise the fact that people have been for years trying to get this statue taken down democratically, so to speak, and with due process, and theyve got nowhere. And this was a moment when people with passion and anger and righteous indignation took matters into their own hands. Events in bristol have reignited debate about other controversial landmarks. British businessman cecil rhodes is considered by many to have been a white supremacist. There have been more calls to remove his statue in oxford. In plymouth, a petition is asking for this statue of sir Francis Drake to be taken down because of his connections to the slave trade. And its notjust statues but street names. In glasgow, many roads are named after slave traders and there have been renewed calls to rename them. This is Trafalgar Square in london. Now, Horatio Nelson was, of course, a British Naval hero who defeated napoleon at the battle of trafalgar. And, for many, his place at the top of this column is richly deserved. But for some his failure to denounce slavery means this glorification is wrong. There have in the past been calls for nelsons column to be removed. This is the start of a conversation that we need to have in britain. There are certain artefacts and buildings and objects that we dont talk about, which has a deep history, a history around the exploitation of people. But cultural historian Patrick Vernon doesnt want nelsons column removed, he wants it explained. I think the columns quite important because it celebrates the battle of trafalgar. Over a third of nelsons sailors were black. Youll see images of black sailors on there. There should be some description describing why the column is here, why it was commissioned, but also recognising his past, his connection with the slave trade. And then people could make their own determination, is he a good hero, yes or no . This history professor believes that simply destroying whats controversial isnt productive. So what do you make of the pulling down of the statue in bristol . Im against it, and the reason im against it is that im a historian and i believe the really important thing is not to make history disappear but to make sure that you have every single context and understanding about it that is possible, so it should be fished out of the water where its been thrown, and placed in a local museum and given a great deal of Historical Context. We have to understand why it was that people thought that it was a good idea to put up a statue to a philanthropist who also happen to be a major slave trader, one of the most evil trades in the world, as has been recognised for many centuries now, and simply disposing of the statue doesnt do that, it doesnt provide the Historical Context. Crowd take it down take it down the black lives matter protests have resonated across the world, and led to calls for a rethink on how some historical figures are commemorated. Tim muffett, bbc news. Let talk about that and education. Werejoined by lavinya stennet, whos campaigning for black history to be made a compulsory part of the School Curriculum in england, and teacher camille london miyo, from the National Education union. Good morning, both, thank you so much forjoining us. You have been a teacherfor much forjoining us. You have been a teacher for 30 years also, camille, what would you like to see changed in teaching . I would like to see blackett be taught as an integral pa rt blackett be taught as an integral part of the National Curriculum, taught in all schools, in all areas at all tiers, and that it represents the history of all the community that it seeks to serve. Right now it is not representative of the history thatis is not representative of the history that is out there. Lavinya, you are directly trying to address this. What would you like to see, what needs to change . Our current campaign, teach black History Month 65, seeks to get Gavin Williamson to amend the National Curriculum to involve more specific examples of blackheads, from roman times to today. What specific examples would you like . From roman times we know that black people were here in britain, the roman empire spans to north africa. There are examples like the beachy head lady, through archaeological evidence that shows black people were here since roman times, great pioneers like john blackie petitioned henry viii four 80pa blackie petitioned henry viii four 80p a day. There were also people here in elizabethan teams turn times and before windrush we had black people in britain who served in world war i. There are many examples to draw from in terms of positive imagery, more nuanced conversations and narratives as well, to draw examples to put on the National Curriculum. Camille, as we saw in the piece from tim muffett, in the wa ke the piece from tim muffett, in the wake of the Edward Colston statue in bristol, there is an interesting debate about statues about people like cecil rhodes, Francis Drake, nelson in Trafalgar Square. The men that these statues are of a report of british history but there is an argument that they require Historical Context to look at both what they did well and what they failed to do . I think it is really important that history is taught within context. If we understand that the history mainly being taught right now is empirical, where characters like cecil rhodes etc are talked about and written about, taught in schools, we find that young people growing up are disengaged and alienated from that history because they are not part of that history, and in reality the history that has to be taught is a history that has to be taught is a history that has to be taught is a history that reflect the experiences of all people that are part of this community, that is the only way it can work. If it was taught, how much difference would it make to children growing up right now . It would make a massive difference. We know that black children underachieve in Different Levels all over the country. I have a grandson who is fourth generation brought up in this country. He has very little knowledge of history being taught, black History Month being taught in his school, right . That is disgusting. History being taught, black history being taught. When i came into teaching it was to see our history and role models being represented, 30 years and we are still challenging, as part of the black education alliance, institutional racism when it occurs. You were going to make an extra point to di spilkova you, camille . Make an extra point and point to di spilkova you, camille . Make an extra pointand i point to di spilkova you, camille . Make an extra point and i spoke over you . We had to call it out and it is still happening, 30 years on. Lavinya, these questions you asked of your teachers at school, or did you come to a realisation of later on and you had said powerfully that you want to make it different for the next generation . That point is mighty important, it impacts all young people, it is notjust black students but all young people in britain. If we can teach black history it would give white and asian students a sense of community, identity, more understanding and empathy for black people, black people knowing more about themselves as well. I think it has an array of benefits for all young people across generations and in terms of the teachers, there is an engagement and a willingness for them to want to teach black history, but there needs to bea teach black history, but there needs to be a policy push which allows and encourages them. If Gavin Williamson did that, it would send a really positive message in these times. Lavinya, given what you saw with Edward Colston and many people have said they did not know who he was, for example, and there seems to be a thirst for knowledge, argue encouraged by that . Definitely, i think with the mergers of the black people in america as well as the subsequent protests in the uk, there isa subsequent protests in the uk, there is a real appetite for change and with the black curriculum we are pushing full, it literally gives a solution and if the solution was met it was really provide students and teachers with a new attitude towards learning, towards history, i think this change needs to be made and done this month. On the point of a statue like nelson, do you agree with the guy we spoke to in the piece, leave the statue but explain the Historical Context . Can i ask the Historical Context . Can i ask the question, was there any historical engagement with the statue before . Historical engagement with the statue before . Are historical engagement with the statue before . Are people going there to understand the Historical Context while it was there . It is important to realise the ways in which we interact with history are wide ranging and if we leave a statue that has no relevance and no Critical Engagement with it, it calls into question the taste for it, that is my opinion. I think it is really important we have the right balance, the Race Equality Centre in leicester has been urging for a Heritage Centre reflecting the histories of black people. We are in a situation where we had statues of people like nelson but where is the balance . There is no balance. When young people are well no Walking Around during historic tours, they do not see themselves, and if they do not see themselves, and if they do not see themselves, and if they do not see themselves they cannot aspire when young people are Walking Around. Thank you both for yourtime, camille, Walking Around. Thank you both for your time, camille, who Walking Around. Thank you both for yourtime, camille, who has Walking Around. Thank you both for your time, camille, who has been a teacherfor your time, camille, who has been a teacher for 30 years, and your time, camille, who has been a teacherfor 30 years, and lavinya, seoul of the black curriculum. Ceo of. Lawyers for Prince Andrew have rejected claims by us prosecutors that he has not co operated with the inquiry into sex offenderjeffrey epstein. Legal representatives for the duke say he has offered to speak with them on at least three occasions this year. We spoke to gloria already, the lawyer representing some of epsteins accuses, she says she wa nts a epsteins accuses, she says she wants a resolution of alleged victims. The Justice Department is firing, so to speak, verbally at Prince Andrew and his representatives, they are firing back. In the crossfire are the victims, my clients, they are in pain and want to know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Lets speak with royal correspondent nick witchell. So many questions. How do you explain this big disparity between what is between what princess lawyers Prince Andrews lawyers at the us attorney general are saying . It is puzzling at first sight until you consider this, the first duty of any lawyer is to protect their clients. Andrew has instructed lawyers who are specialists in reputational and crisis management, particularly for ultrahigh net worth individuals, that tells you something. And quite properly, these lawyers will be attempting to control the process, wanting to limit the scope of the us investigators. We may reasonably assume the us attorney would like a face to face meeting with andrew in the uk as a potential witness at which he could ask him and knitted array of questions. We only had to think back to the newsnight interview to see what happens when and you face is unlimited and untrammelled questions, so i think it is reasonable to suppose his specialist uk british lawyers are attempting to control the process, declaring that we want to help, but they may also be insisting, please send your questions in writing and we will respond in writing. I thought it was interesting in the statement from the lawyers yesterday, they said he has on at least three occasions this year offered his assistance as a witness. They have not said he has offered to meet the us investigators, he has merely offered his assistance. What form have they offered that as . The other issue the british lawyers are very concerned about its confidentiality, something the us lawyer in what appears to be his frustration does not appear too concerned about. Does he have an obligation to speak to us investigators and what would have to change to make that happen . There is no legal obligation as such, we must remember he is a witness, not a suspect, he cannot be extradited. The americans have attempted to exercise this mutual Legal Assistance whereby the british authorities would put pressure on andrew and his lawyers to cooperate. He is under strong moral obligation, it is seven months since the newsnight interview and since he said in his statement withdrawing from public duties that he would assist any appropriate us legal Law Enforcement entity, but they are still arguing about precisely how he would do that. It may be thought that if he really wants to help, and this is key, what is his priority . Does he really want to help to get to the bottom of this, is that his priority, or is andrews priority to protect himself, which may be why he does not want to face unlimited face to face questioning by the americans. What happens now . I think the lawyers will continue to argue, there is clearly very bad feeling, there is clearly very bad feeling, the fact that british lawyers went public yesterday in an attempt to fight back, that it is that is how it was presented, they feel the american lawyers are not giving a true account of what has been happening. It has to be helped that the lawyers will come to some understanding, agree some protocol whereby and you can tell what he knows. Good to speak to you as ever, nick rachel. Nicholas witchell. Now lets get the weather with carol. Good morning. It is a cloudy start for many. Plans to get all Primary School children in england back into the classroom before the end of the summer term could be abandoned. Are to be abandoned. The government had aimed for all primary pupils to spend four weeks in school before the end of the school year. Some reception, year1 and year 6 pupils are already back at school. The childrens commissioner Anne Longfield told us she worried about the long term impact on children missing school. This is something which is a major consequence, at the same time we are seeing shops, theme parks and the like will be reopening soon. I know there is an economic imperative around that but so is the education of children and that is what we had to avoid without a generation of children leaving school in five yea rs children leaving school in five years time, disadvantaged children have poorer prospects because they we re have poorer prospects because they were not given support to land during this period. Learn. From medical staff to cleaners and porters behind every survivor of coronavirus is a team of people who helped them back to full health. Brea kfasts Graham Satchell has the story of one mum who says she owes everything to those who cared for her. When Karen Stevenson became ill, it took a small army of nhs staff to keep her alive. I was so frightened, you know . Somebody is telling you that youve got to be put on a ventilator into an induced coma for two weeks to give you any chance of survival, ijust got all sorts going through my head. Ijust thought, ill never see my children again. Karen is a3. Her two children, jesse and ben, just eight and four. Karen was rushed to kingsmill hospital in nottinghamshire at the end of march. Within a day of me first meeting her, she became much, much more unwell. When i said, you need to go to intensive care, you need to go on a breathing machine, she grabbed my hand and she said, dont let me die. Ive got kids, ive got a young family, dont let me die. To be faced with somebody of your age, your own age who is really poorly, whos got a family, who now needs to be intubated and ventilated wasjust really, really striking, and quite moving. I remember being wheeled into icu and thats all i remember. It was horrible. Its just. Saying goodbye, i couldnt even speak to the children that morning because they just told me they didnt know whether id survive or not. Karen was sedated, put on a ventilator. Her life, in the balance. Ive been a trauma nurse almost a0 years so im used to dealing with that stuff but it was an absolute warzone, yes, definitely. Linda was part of the intensive care team that looked after karen. Shes also her neighbour and friend. Every day, shed bring in messages from karens family. Although she cant recall these conversations, i do think she heard them, i do. She would hold my hand and i would say to her, ive seenjohn, ive seen the children, theyve gone for a walk, theyre gone to the park, they look really happy. She would always squeeze my hand. Karen spent two weeks in intensive care. When i came round, they asked me when i spoke to my family and i couldnt remember so they said, do you want to speak to them now . I said, yes. And i couldnt even hold my own phone, it was too heavy for me to hold, i couldnt even hold my own phone up. So for me, i was able to hold the phone, i could stand behind the patient and hold the phone so the Family Member could see karen or. When she was unconscious, it was very much holding the phone to her ear. Obviously she couldnt hold the phone when she was unconscious, so that was my role to do it. Nikki was in constant touch with karens husband john and the children. She encouraged them to send in videos like this ofjesse and ben on Easter Sunday morning. We are hunting for easter eggs. What did it mean to you when you saw karen leave icu . Oh, its really special, incredibly special to see someone leave and to see them smiling. It just fills you with real pride and you know what, thats great, thats great for them, its great that family. I think youre ever such a strong lady, you are doing really, really well, and just keep one day at a time. Time for a bit of a reunion. This just some of the staff on ward a3, where karen recovered after intensive care. I want to sit here and cry. Sammy is a domestic. He puts on protective clothing every day to clean the ward, and brings a bit of no medical normality to patients. Ijust try going in there and have Light Conversations and i think the fact that im not medical, anything like that, i could just have a light conversation, there are no visitors able to go in, so its nice just to have a normal conversation. Andrea helped karen to wash, dress, eat. Karen couldnt do anything. In the shower, i was holding her arms up for her. So it just goes to show that everybody is different. But shes remarkable. Shes made a remarkable recovery. Rob is a physiotherapist and helped karen regain her strength. To see someone to stand, begin to walk is great and to see her discharged from hospital that is yeah, yeah, its what its. It makes it all worth it, of course. I sort of basically manage and oversee everything that goes on in the ward. And it wasjustin who wheeled karen out when she was finally discharged. When they seem so poorly that you dont know if they are going to intensive care and you dont know if they are going to come back again, it sort of chokes me up speaking about it now, but to see her husband there and her kids shouting from the car and, you know, it makes the job, thats the great part about the job. It makes all the hard work and the difficult times worth it. Hi, are you all right . Karen is now back at home, still recovering, but finally with her family. Our dogs trixie. Trixies 0k outside. I just want to see a really big thank you to everybody, to each and every one of you, for the help and the care that you provided. You basically saved my life and brought me back home to my children. Its really emotional to see every one of you now, because ive not seen you since i left, but i owe everything to you, its amazing that i can sit here in my recovery and be able to thank you. Im recovering, im getting there, thank you. Well done, karen. Well done, karen, youre a star thank you. Well done, karen, keep up the good work. Goodbye, karen. Well done, karen. Come on, karen. Well done, karen, and well done all of them as well. You get a sense of how emotionally involved they are, not just caring for them how emotionally involved they are, notjust caring for them and making them better but the nations are there as well. Thank you, graham, for bringing everyone together on the screen to show their appreciation. Everyone is invested on making sure they bring as many people as possible through on the other side. With most pubs and restaurants across the uk closed since march the 20th, the hospitality sector has been deeply hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Pubs and restaurants in england have been preparing to reopen from the ath ofjuly, but the government is under pressure to suggest an earlier date due to huge job losses in the industry. So far across the uk, hospitality businesses have only been offering takeaways or home deliveries. There is no firm date yet for when scotland, wales and Northern Ireland will allow the reopening of pubs and restaurants. We cannot offer you a drink or a bar snack this morning but we can remind you of what one looks like. Our reporter holly hamilton is at a pub in st helens. Good morning. Youre behind the bar as well. I think it suits me. I cannot offer you a pint right now, it is probably for the best. So many people have been missing their local for the lockdown. That is not the priority for the government. 3. 5 millionjobs is what priority for the government. 3. 5 million jobs is what is at stake. The Hospitality Industry is facing a crisis at the moment with all the pubs and restaurants close during lockdown, it is not a great time. There is pressure on all the devolved governments to open up as quickly as possible. There is no day at the minute for england, Northern Ireland, scotland and wales. There is questions about what will be safe and what measures will need to be in place before any pipes can open. Lets speak to andy, the landlord at at the cricketers arms. What have you been doing to try and get anything safer opening . We are blessed with having three different beer gardens here. Even if we take every other table ad of years, we still have a decent capacity, a one way system operating in the toilets, hand sanitising stations about the place, no queueing at the bar, designated areas to be sad within the bar if that is allowed, because we do not know if the pubs will be allowed to open. It might be Table Service within the outside areas. There is a lot of work to do, isnt there . They are nearly getting them out. What we need is some guidance and for the government to come out and say we are going to open on the ath ofjuly. All the breweries need to have time for brewing and the dre men need time to get the sellers bottles that will be a three or four macro week period. We should be able to open up with may a restricted menu but theyjust need some guidance of how we can do this and what the timescale is. You have listed some of the things he had done. In terms of measures can had done. In terms of measures can had said there has not been guidance provided by the government about what you have to do before you can reopen. No two individual pubs are the same with unique differences and capacity limits. Maybe it might be an idea for local licensing authorities to work with the local publicans. Who knows their places best than the publicans . We know how we can possibly make this work. We will try our best. All the pubs are starting from scratch again and it would be a challenge but it is something we will embrace. Nick joins us from camra this morning. Do you feel any of the pubs and breweries are ready to open in the next few weeks . I would say a lot of the small, micro breweries are. They had been very flexible during lockdown. They have had takeaway options in bottle, can and cake. They are in a position. Pubs, as andy says, they are awaiting clarity and guidance from the government. Come two weeks time, some will be ready but the majority will probably be aiming forjuly or august for an opening. They do need a bit of notice as well. A lot of people are talking about a two metre rule. How easy will it be to keep two and a pub atmosphere . Very difficult for probably the normal customers to break a habit of a lifetime but they have had two over the last 12 weeks. I think they are more than capable of doing it. We need clarity as to whether it will be one metre or two metre is at a later date. The Hospitality Industry, they need this. A lot of people will be watching this saying, i cannot hug my granny so why should pubs be allowed to open . At the moment what the government is proposing is a small step, not a massive opening with everyone queueing up outside every pub. It has to be done this way. Hopefully, as it eases off, the next option is to take your granny to the pub. I like that idea. You can borrow this in the meantime. No date just yet. The can borrow this in the meantime. No datejust yet. The Hospitality Industry is starting to open up on the ath ofjuly. No date in scotland, Northern Ireland and wales yet. We can clearly see you using hand sanitising gel. They might think you have a pint in your hand. That is true, actually. I have been having too many. Were nowjoined byjack stein, the chef director of the rick stein group. Hejoins us from he joins us from padstow this morning. Lovely to have you on the programme. I dont know if you could hear everything that was being said that on the issue of trying to stay open, when you do reopen, trying to get things right and trying to make sure social distancing is as according to government guidelines, how difficult has it been to try and get those things in place for you . Morning thank you for having me on. It isa morning thank you for having me on. It is a constantly changing feast of the uncertainty. The Hospitality Industry is very important. We need to make sure we are getting things right with regards to the entire situation with covid. Government guidelines need to be clear. Is it going to be two metres or one metre . We have this outside space. We could be sitting people here, socially distant and feeding them with the glorious weather we have been having. Everyone needs to plan and we need clarity. Sorry, there are a lot of seagulls around. We have various plans, we have been working tirelessly on this, the whole industry has. To coin a phrase that we are so excited to reopen but we need to make sure it is at the right time and with the right guidance and we can welcome people back to cornwall but not before it is the right time for science. That is the same with every industry, notjust hospitality. If the two metre rule stays in place, what kind of impact asi stays in place, what kind of impact as i had on the numbers you can have in your restaurants . Most restau ra nts in your restaurants . Most restaurants will not make any money. Luckily we have rooms down here, we had people staying who can stay with us and make a bit of a package which will be fantastic for cornwall. On two metres, the most restaurants would make a loss. At one metre we could make a small profit. For restau ra nts, could make a small profit. For restaurants, like our main restau ra nt restaurants, like our main restaurant here, it is a big space and we should be better placed. Sometimes people like intimate spacesin sometimes people like intimate spaces in restaurants. It is clarity, knowing what we can do. Looking at europe and seeing what is happening in italy and spain and seeing what is happening with man. Everyone has learned how to cook over the last few weeks, which could bea over the last few weeks, which could be a problem going forward. Perhaps it isa be a problem going forward. Perhaps it is a big thing for us, as brits. If we can open outside spaces, are pub hearing, has a huge beer garden. It will be a great left for the country because we love the pub. You are right. Anyone who has looked at restau ra nt are right. Anyone who has looked at restaurant and pub kitchens, they are small spaces. It is notjust about people coming into the restau ra nts, about people coming into the restaurants, it is about keeping your staff say. That is why we had been dealing takeaway is. We are testing out all the regimes. We had a30 testing out all the regimes. We had a 30 page document of safety stop we are using small numbers to see how we can position chefs and staff. We can position chefs and staff. We have a 30 page document of safety. We a re we have a 30 page document of safety. We are looking at how we can use apps and ipads to cover the face to face interaction. I have been working in kitchens since the early to thousands. I do not ever remember working this hard. early to thousands. I do not ever remember working this hard. I am quite familiar with the takeaway, which isjust quite familiar with the takeaway, which is just up the road from you. That is open, isnt it . People can get fish and chips. Exactly. That is a morale boost for the nation. We need to make sure everything is right before we open up call malta tourism make sure the numbers are right. We do not want to open up prematurely and have a second spike. It would be fantastic to get some july and august trading down. We do not want to find ourselves locked again in the winter, because that would be tragic for holiday and seasonal areas like cornwall. How your dad . He is in lockdown in sydney. We are on the phone, on skype and whatnot. Australia have had quite low cases. The Hospitality Industry is getting back to normal and they are using different types of social distancing. I miss him. He isa of social distancing. I miss him. He is a figurehead and we run everything by him. Whenever i see him, there is a picture of Sydney Harbour bridge behind him. Very jealous. The next thing we are going to do is look at somebody making a cup of tea in an unconventional way. You say you have not cooked anything ina while, you say you have not cooked anything in a while, talk us through the perfect cup of tea. Do you leave the tea bag in for perfect cup of tea. Do you leave the tea bag infora perfect cup of tea. Do you leave the tea bag in for a while and milking at the end . I like to use a pot, a better bone china and fresh milk, that kind of thing. I like to have a lot of sugar in my tea but that is just me. Brits like petals in hotels. The spanish chambermaid was saying, that is so strange, why dont they use a microwave . I think you know the answer to that, they need a kettle. Thank you very much indeed. Jack was referring to a video we are about to show you on the best way to make a cup of tea. It divides families and individuals. All sorts of people have a view. This video is from an American Mother and her daughter which has sent a shudder amongst many brits. Everyone wanted to see me make hot tea or british tea, so today we are going to make tea. Fill up with water, put it in the microwave, set it for a water, put it in the microwave, set itfora minute, water, put it in the microwave, set it for a minute, for the milking, put the tea bag in, add the sugar, give it a little star and that is how you make hot tea. Stir. Stir. I am going to stop you there, that is not tea. Each to their own of course, but not that way. Seeing lions and meerkats in the wild would normally mean travelling the other side of the world but how about doing it from the comfort of your own home . While lockdown has mostly put a stop to travelling virtual tourism has seen a boost. Our africa correspondent Andrew Harding reports. On the edge of the vast kalahari desert, dawn has lured these meerkats out of their burrow. Some more focused on the task than others. Little did they know or presumably care but their morning ritual is being broadcast around the world can live with a commentary from a safari guide. Good morning from a safari guide. Good morning from the beautiful kalahari. Good morning. In distant essex, the mills family is hooked. Do you say meerkat . Transported from the tedium of lockdown to the african wilderness. I find it fantastic, of lockdown to the african wilderness. Ifind it fantastic, i love the sounds of the bush. It is something we can all do together. It feels as if you can be there with them. Nothing can beat watching these animals up close like this but perhaps the virtual safaris are the future. During lockdown, the number of people watching these animals live, online, on the internet has risen fivefold. Instead of crowds of tourists, there are a handful of film crews and it seems like the animals have noticed the difference. Ican animals have noticed the difference. I can 100 say wild dog sightings, elephant sightings have increased a lot. No people around to scare them off. That would be my theory, definitely. Can thislast all could virtual become the new normal . think virtual is part of the future. It isa think virtual is part of the future. It is a critical way for us to be able to share our Natural Heritage without damaging that which we love and care about. Time to track down more wildlife for todays second Live Performance before an adoring online audience. When you are stuck inside all this time, does it allow you to feel almost like you are going outdoors . To explore the world a bit. Yes, but you cannot smell anything. That is very true. No smell. Technology and the internet still have their limits. The term urban is often used to describe music of black origin but its long been criticised for being outdated. Now, one of the Worlds Largest record labels, republic records, have said theyre no longer using the term and wants others to do the same. We can speak now to rapper Tinchy Stryder. Hejoins us live he joins us live from east london. Good to have you on the show. What do you feel about what this one record label has said about the term urban, what it did mean and what it now means. What does it represent to you . The whole term, urban, that was normal in the music industry. If it is urban, black origin, every black musician isnt always urban. A black artist is making music that it is not the same kind of music. It is ticking a box and i do not think thatis ticking a box and i do not think that is fair. Hopefully everyone will follow on. They are saying it will follow on. They are saying it will be across the whole organisation. That department will not be named like that and the rest of it. You would like it to be rolled out among other companies as well . That is a start. It is not just a musician, every company. When you have a name like urban, i dont know, i feel like it you have a name like urban, i dont know, ifeel like it is not even boxed in. Everyone starts for it to become the norm. I do not think it is right. We were talking about education earlier and statutes earlier, lots of things we have accepted as a way of doing things or terms we have used for a long time and they are being examined in the current climate. Is that positive for you . Definitely. Current climate. Is that positive for you . Definitely. With current climate. Is that positive for you . Definitely. With education, a lot of people, it is not like they have not been taught anything different, it is right now is the time or has been a time for everyone to wa ke time or has been a time for everyone to wake up in a dealing desk and doing that. It is not really fair to feel like. Whatever type of music you have, i do not think it is ok to be boxed. If that is where this started, hopefully it will follow through. What things would you like to see change . Education, i have been talking about education a lot with what is happening in the world and the black lives matter movement. At school a lot of things were not taught. A lot of the new generation is thinking where are we going to start learning from . It sells a lot of things. And you do not know the issue youd think everything that is not normal is normal. When not normal becomes normal, what do you do to fix it . Education is key. Lets talk about learning and spreading and understanding what we are doing. Give us an idea of what life has been like you did for you in lockdown . You have a toddler. Has your bag got wipes and everything in there . Yes, i had everything in there. Hand sanitiser gloves, masks, and something for my special princess. Obviously, my mrs, and my mum at home, they say, make sure you have everything. I do not forget anything any more. This bag is saving me. How is lockdown . anything any more. This bag is saving me. How is lockdown . A friend once told me, learn how to surrender. She can speak, when she was maybe nine months, eight months, she could plant to attend by herself. She sounds like she is fun. Iam inspired herself. She sounds like she is fun. I am inspired by the bag. Thank you so much. I think i need one of those bags for myself. Thats all from us this morning, thank you forjoining us. Well be back from 6am tomorrow. Have a good day. See you then. Hi, good morning, welcome to bbc news. Im victoria derbyshire.
