First, our main story. Police investigating the Terror Attack in manchester have released new Images Of Salman Abedi The Man who carried out the bombing on the night of the attack. A rucksack on his back, hed flown in from libya five days earlier. Police have released this picture, its background removed, because they want information about what he did in that time. Day and night, theyve crisscrossed manchester, raiding buildings, making arrests. This was moss side yesterday. The area was cordoned off for a while with the bomb Disposal Team on standby. 11 men are in custody, and there are now 17 searches either concluded or continuing, largely in the north west of england. Police have revealed that after the bombing at 10 33 on monday night, forensic officers went straight in to examine the aftermath. Within two hours, theyd identified the bomber, possibly from id found on his body. Theyve tracked his movements from the family home to the flat hes said to have rented before disappearing to libya, returning on the 18th of may to move into a City Centre Apartment where the bomb was likely to have been assembled. Theyve pieced together his Network Friends and relatives are in custody. Theyre gathering financial evidence of who backed him, but crucially they now know how the bomb was put together. Yes, i dont think we would be talking so much about security today if those terrible events had not happened. It has shot up the Election Agenda with both the conservatives and labour highlighting aspects of the ma nifestos. Highlighting aspects of the manifestos. The missing this country extremism commission. Trees are aces this is the body that will have teeth, has legal powers and a legal requirement to identify extremism. Notjust requirement to identify extremism. Not just violent extremism, requirement to identify extremism. Notjust violent extremism, all types of extremism from that directed at women by way of things like female jails and reflation armour but it will have a very broad remit. It will have to put forward ideas to governments worried needs to put into place new policy, new law, but we dont actually know from the conservatives how it will be paid for and how some of the specifics will be put together. Labour today are highlighting once again their pledge to put 10,000 extra Police Officers on the streets, but also they say today 1000 extra Security Service personnel, m15, m16, gchq. The conservatives are questioning how they will pay for it. All of this against the backdrop of narrowing opinion polls. Labour examples today just six points behind. Thank you. The snp will today outline what it describes as a responsible plan for billions of pounds in extra public spending across the uk over the next five years. British airways says it hopes to restore some normality to its services today, after yesterdays catastrophic computer failure left thousands of passengers around the world stranded. The airline says the it problems were caused by a power failure. 0ur reporter sara smith is near heathrow for us this morning. Sara whats the latest . Just bring us up to date with when things might get back to normality. Ea says another it services have been resumed, so theyre going to be able to put on what they call near normal services from gatwick and the majority of flights from here at heathrow. We have seen some flights going this morning, but there will continue to be disruptions because our crews are in the wrong places, and also how much comfort is that to the thousands of people who didnt catch their flight because they were cancelled yesterday . People going on holiday, to business meetings, to meet family and friends, who were saying this morning that they are still struggling to get through, travelling to rebook. They dont know if these holidays are going to come about, if they will be able to get through at all now. The airline said they will be able to rebook, they will be able to get their refund, they will get some expenses for accommodation or travel expenses. Some people have been sleeping over in the airport tonight. Ba also say if you are booked today, check that your booking is confirmed, check that your booking hasnt been cancelled before you turn up, but they will d raft before you turn up, but they will draft on extra staff over the next few days to deal with the backlog. Thank you very much. While she was speaking there, information she wont have because it has literally just been released, heathrow has advised passengers whose flights we re advised passengers whose flights were cancelled on saturday, yesterday, not to travel to the airport unless they have already rebooked. That is ba passengers advised not to travel today unless you have rebooked already. Tooth decay is the biggest cause of Hospital Admissions in england for children underfive. The Great Manchester Run is going ahead this morning in the city centre amid heightened security and an atmosphere of quiet defiance. 35,000 participants will be running through the city centre in the second major Sporting Event in the city since 0ur reporter Catriona Renton is down on the start line and shejoins us now. It is good to see it is a dried out this morning. Plans will have to have changed as a result of mondays events. Absolutely, it is getting really busy here now as we get ready for the marathon to start at 9am. To tell you more about these plans in this very difficult week, i am joined by charlie, the event director of this great matches to run today. First of all, a difficult week for you. There must have been doubts about whether it go ahead. Week for you. There must have been doubts about whether it go aheadm has been a difficult week for the city of manchester, and our thoughts have been with the families. What we said first off on Tuesday Morning was, looks, tell us what you want us to do and we will wait and stand by. We have worked with the council and police. The city has showed tunisia pulled together. It has been truly incredible. Tell us about today, what will people see in terms of security and visibility of police . Anyone who has been to magister in the last few days will see a lot of armed police. It will be a heightened police presence. Ifeel safe, i would heightened police presence. Ifeel safe, iwould bring my heightened police presence. Ifeel safe, i would bring my family here. Lam glad safe, i would bring my family here. I am glad to see the police here. People can expect some baggage searches. This is as usual in magister today but with extra security, which is what i think people would want to see. The city is so resilience, 35,000 people running. Word eu advised people to come and get a good book . There is some good viewing down on bridgewater viaduct. There is a big screen down there. Also as in the keys, out in trafford, and lots of places to watch. Thank you so much. This city is showing great resilience after what happened in manchester on monday. We are expecting to see some well known names, bryan robson from manchester united, peter cook from new order, or showing solidarity with this very brave city. Thank you. Louise will be down there later on, presenting the coverage on bbc one, which sta rts the coverage on bbc one, which starts at 12 30pm this afternoon. More now on the situation facing customers of British Airways. Thousands of passengers were left stranded after a serious computer failure grounded planes. The airline hopes to restore a near normal schedule today. Lets speak to phil davies, who should have flown to barbados from Heathrow Yesterday but was sent home. We can see from where you were sitting, you are most definitely not in barbados. How frustrating was yesterday . Good morning. Yesterday wasnt a day that is going to go down in the memory, i have to say. 12 hours at Gatwick Airport when we should have been flying to barbados and then on to the islands. For a weeks holiday during the school holidays. Not great, really. How was the experience . British airways, the staff there he was sure were doing their best to keep people informed as much as they could, and obviously they didnt know a novel lot. Frustrating was that . they didnt know a novel lot. Frustrating was that . I think it was obviously difficult for the staff, because they were faced with something that seemed to be unprecedented. Certainly thats what the captain of our playing told us. It was quite obvious from quite early in the morning, when we checked in, that the records of the problems, because the Check In System problems, because the check in syste m we nt problems, because the Check In System went down initially. They we re system went down initially. They were having to use a Back Up System at that point. We were at then finally got called to the plane as per usual, and then it became obvious that they were going to be problems. The captain actually came up problems. The captain actually came up from the flight deck into the Departure Area on two occasions to explain that they were facing difficulties. At that point it became very obvious that we were going to be facing a significant delay. But, at that point, we were under the impression that we would be going at some stage. So you actually got on board the plane, or you just held on Departure Area . Initially we were in the departure lounge, and we were told to go back into determine all. To have lunch, have a drink. We were told we would get vouchers, which never appeared. The site was then recalls, we returned to the Departure Gate and we actually got on the plane. Everyone got on the plane, and things appeared to be ready to go. We pushed back, we were. And the cat came over the tannoy and explains that one passenger had decided they didnt want to travel, and batman starts the bag had been taken off. And batman starts the bag had been ta ken off. Then and batman starts the bag had been taken off. Then transpires that the royal bank have been taken off, and thenit royal bank have been taken off, and then it just became royal bank have been taken off, and then itjust became a complete saga. We had to go to a different part of the airports, they had to check the banks on and off. It was just, the airports, they had to check the banks on and off. It wasjust, it just became chaotic. Extremely frustrating for you. In other words, are you still hoping to get away this half term . Not going to be going to the caribbean, thats for sure. We are thinking probably the isle of wight. Perfect, no were nice at this time of year. Thank you. As a travel writer, john bell has experienced more delays than most, hejoins us now from london. Good morning. Do we have a clear idea about what went wrong here, and can we be confident now that they have fixed it . Im afraid im not confident that it has been fixed. We hear this morning on both gatwick and heathrow that all systems are not running, which is what ba said about two hours ago. Heathrow are now saying, please dont go to the airport unless you have confirmed a flight airport unless you have confirmed a flight for today. If you dont do that, you could end up like phils horrendous problem yesterday. There is compensation being offered is, compensation, though, is a very white time. I think this will cost mea white time. I think this will cost me a lot of money in compensation. Then you should also be looking at your travel insurance policy. But U Nfortu Nately, your travel insurance policy. But unfortunately, 10 of britains travel without any insurance at all. So that may be a closed door. But were going to have a lot of disappointed families, particularly families travelling with children over half term. You just dont have the time to wait for a rebooking. You say time to wait for another booking, it surely isnt physically possible to get all of yesterdays passengers onto planes at some point in the next couple of days. Absolutely not, even if they tra nsfer absolutely not, even if they transfer passengers to other airlines. I myself am travelling at half time, and i know how fraught de villiers. We will have a lot of disappointed people, and we already heard this morning about people losing their holidays to vegas, missing weddings. Compensation doesnt cover that. Financial compensation just isnt enough. Within this case, that is what there is available. Phil, as we just heard, had to buy his underbrush months, but after his own accommodation, things like that. The message has to be really, really keep every single receipt for everything you spend, the airline if they havent covered it, and then get that Compensation Claim in as soon as possible. Just to allow the airline to rebook doesnt cover your loss. 90 very much. Appreciate your thoughts. A few people getting in touch on twitter. Not letting people into terminal five until 90 minutes before their flight. Com into terminal five until 90 minutes before theirflight. Com unless into terminal five until 90 minutes before their flight. Com unless you have confirmed flights. Katie on twitter says, paper he British Airways, thanks for ruining my mums holiday. Brenda said, now driving back hundred and 50 miles, two weeks holiday cancelled. Ba saying they are hoping to operate at near normal schedule today. The majority of services from heathrow. Extremely sorry for the huge disruption caused to customers. Do not go back unless you have a rebooked flight. Something when catastrophic we wrong with their system, but the question is whether the communications is was effective enough afterwards with the passengers. A few people asking whether it was a future hacking thing. There is no suggestion of that will stop it was a power problem. Lets get a look at the weather here. Not bad at the moment. Some dry weather around now for most of us, and some sunshine. It cant looking sky we have here in penarth in the vale of york. Whilst most places are dry now, we will see some sunshine developing quite widely, we are expecting more storms to arrive later on in the day. Everything is moving up from the south, giving some bursts of 100 military and bursts of rain as well. This cloud developing to the south that will bring some storms. Still a little rain to clear way for the foreign northern scotland. Cloud breaking in most places, some sunshine coming through. Gusty winds with these downpours and storms. Mainly focus on the south west during the afternoon. A north westerly breeze in scotland, meaning it will be cooler. Much cooler than recently around the moray firth by around 10 degrees or so. Around 18 or 19 of the central belt. Heres the downpour. Developing through the afternoon, coming up from the channel. Mainly into the south west, south wales. Drier towards the south east, one to hit or mist showers. Is temperatures in the mid 20s. Those showers moving northwards and then things just getting wetter and wetter. The downpours become more widespread across england and east wales. The storms become more extensive as well. Might rain pushing into northern ireland, southern scotland, northern scotland, comfortable microscope in. Not so over southern england were it is very muggy night. After those downpours which continue to rumble across Northern England during tomorrow morning, some rain working its way further into scotland, away from northern ireland, to the south the cloud sinning. Quite warm and muggy air in the south east, could trigger a few light showers. Much cooler feeling across scotland. 12 or 13 degrees underneath all that rain. That should clear away. As we head into next week, turning drierfrom any should clear away. As we head into next week, turning drier from any of us. High pressure building in which some light winds and sunshine. It should feel quite warm. The building is a short walk from Manchester Arena and was inside the Police Cordon following mondays attack. Rogers govender, the dean of manchester, has been leading prayers just outside the police tape all week but the cathedral has been reopened in time for the Sunday Service today. Good morning. How do you reflect on the past week in your city . It has been a devastating week for the city. People are obviously saddened. At the same time, there is a rightful of defiance. I think we are moving on now to a real desire for us to see People United in solidarity. Solidarity with the victims, theirfamilies, solidarity. Solidarity with the victims, their families, solidarity with those who have been injured, and solidarity with one another. We hold together as a city and of the region. The city is much more than the city centre. There has been an increase, albeit small numbers, an increase, albeit small numbers, an increase in the number of hate crimes reported in the manchester area in the wake of what happened on monday. We have seen lots of demonstrations from the Muslim Community of their warrants at what happened. What would you say, what would your qb . I think youre quite right, the number of hate crimes has more than doubled. The message, really, is for us to report hate crimes. I think that is the request from gmp, and i think thats the right thing to do. And to resist hate crimes, and i think we ought, in ourdesire to hate crimes, and i think we ought, in our desire to be united, to not allow hate crimes to be articulate its order certainly not acted upon. I think the message ought to be, we are in this together as a city, and we need each other. There is so much healing to happen in the days and months ahead. We have got to be united as a city. I believe that we will be, and we will make sure that we arent defiant and that we continue moving forward is as a diverse city. Those kinds of words are warm and reassuring, but the harsh reality we have to grapple with, this was a son of the city driven to carry out this appalling act, driven by a distorted version of his faith. Thats something we need to get our heads around and learn how to tackle. Yes, i think in terms of the bombers face, i have said in another interview, that is what we call good religion and bad religion. Good religion is religion of any sort, of different kinds, that has to do with love, love of god, love of neighbour, love of the disadvantaged, those who work for unity, for peace, justice, for integration, bryn solution, although thatis integration, bryn solution, although that is good religion. Thats the kind of thing we have to put our focus on. Thank you for in. We appreciate it. This is where we say goodbye to viewers on bbc one. Backs are watching and have a good day. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news. Its time now for a look at the newspapers. Financial analyst Margaret Doyle is here to tell us whats caught her eye. Good morning to you, nice to see you. Quite hard to follow what we have just heard this morning, you. Quite hard to follow what we havejust heard this morning, thank you for coming in this morning. Ariana grande was the lady who did this concert on monday night, she was badly affected, of course, by what happened. You picked out a story regarding her. Yes, i picked out a story about lord glasman, whose daughter had been planning to go to an Ariana Grande concert at the weekend. He talks about what kind of woman she is, he contrasts how he sees with how she is seen by is, who described this as a Crusader Gathering in this shameless concert arena. He describes Ariana Grande really as a role model for young women, a role model because she works hard, a role model because she is very family oriented. Her brother is very family oriented. Her brother is dead, and gillette the Catholic Church because of that. Her brother is gay, and she left the Catholic Church because of that. He said that they hate seeing these young woman free of male dominion, and because these young women are beyond their control and live in their own kingdom of strong independent womanhood. So i thought a really moving account by lord glasman, thinking of his own daughter, hinting that she could quite easily have been among those who were targeted last monday night. Have been among those who were targeted last Monday Nightm have been among those who were targeted last monday night. It is worth mentioning that Ariana Grande has said she will return to manchester to play a concert in the future for the benefit of those affected. Turning away from manchester, which of course dominates the front pages and many of the inside pages, this is from the sunday times, women freezing their eggs because their partners are reluctant to commit to having children. Really, these are gynaecologists attacking the idea that women sort of freeze their eggs because they are just hard hearted, ambitious career women, and it is saying the problem is that women are in relationships, and as soon as they start saying, shouldnt you be thinking of starting a family, suddenly the men get cold feet. Of course, men have the ability to delay being fathers, they can be fathers well into their 50s, whereas for women the biological clock is ticking. So really just for women the biological clock is ticking. So reallyjust saying that there is a difference in the choices facing women. And when the babies do no longer up i have a 16 month old at the moment he was attempting to gees} himself and is obviously spoon feed himself and is obviously spraying the kitchen with anything that goes near his mouth. There has been a long debate, hasnt there . Pa rents been a long debate, hasnt there . Parents must feel we are bombarded with advice left, right and centre, and the thing is, the advice changes, dr spock said one thing. Dr spock, that is going back pa rents a re dr spock, that is going back parents are trying to do the right thing by spoon feeding, but this latest advices no, you have got to live with the mess, let your baby the him or herself. The really important thing is, let them stop eating when they are ready. Important thing is, let them stop eating when they are readym important thing is, let them stop eating when they are ready. It is about self regulation, isnt it . They are much more able to do that if they can control what is going into their mouths. We have durm and their tummy is tiny, small portion foran their tummy is tiny, small portion for an adult is huge for them. We have to remember their tummy is tiny. I cant quite get my head around why this is, it is all cover, this is the headline in the an, it says divorcees are charged 30 more for cars. One woman discovered, after divorcing, that when she ticked that box, her premium went up. Ifeela ticked that box, her premium went up. I feel a little ticked that box, her premium went up. Ifeel a little bit sympathetic, dare i say and, for the insurance companies. I understand why this seems counterintuitive, but we accept that the same individual can be charged different rates were 20 from when they are bawdy, we accept that there are changes in behaviour, and the Insurance Industry is saying, there are studies showed that people, you know, there are twice as likely to have an injury claim if they are divorced. Why is that . Do people become more reckless . That . Do people become more reckless . Who knows . There are an awful lot of studies about the benefits of marriage in general for health and longevity, especially for men. Health and longevity, especially for men. Less so for women yes, U Nfortu Nately men. Less so for women yes, unfortunately there is something may be about slightly risky behaviour, but the Insurance Industry, it is a very competitive market, and they are being paid to assess risk, and it is hard to blame them for saying, we are assessing this, and this is a risk factor. It is competitive, and in my case, normally you just go for the cheapest quote. Thank you, margaret. Nice to see you again. Stay with us, headlines on the way. Hello, this is breakfast with rogerjohnson and rachel burden. Coming up before nine, darren will have the weather. But first, a summary of this mornings main news. Police investigating the Terror Attack in manchester have released new images of salman abedi, the man who carried out the bombing. Taken in the hours before the attack, police have asked anyone who saw abedi to contact them. With 11 men under arrest and searches at addresses across the north west of england, the police are putting together a picture of his last movements. The family of nelljones, a 14 year old victim of the Manchester Attacks said their hearts have been shattered in a tribute to their daughter. In a Statement Released through Greater Manchester police this morning, they said, we cant wrap our children in cotton wool. Even though she has been taken from us, weve had 1a lovely years with her, and that makes us happy. The conservatives and labour are both vowing to improve security on britains streets if they form the next government. Theresa may is highlighting tory plans for a new body to advise on tackling extremism, Whilejeremy Corbyn is pledging to boost the number of police and intelligence staff. British airways says its aiming for flights from gatwick and heathrow to return to near normal schedules after a widespread it failure caused planes to be grounded yesterday. Thousands of passengers were stranded at the airports. A spokesman has warned that delays and cancellations are still expected. Passengers whose flights we re expected. Passengers whose flights were cancelled on saturday are advised not to travel to the Airport U Nless advised not to travel to the airport unless they have already rebooked. Tooth decay is the biggest cause of Hospital Admissions in england for children under five. In a report out today, the british dentaljournal says treating Dental Disease costs the nhs almost £3. 5 billion a year, and children from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to require treatment. The american rock musician greg allman has died. But back home youll always run to sweet melissa. The 69 year old became a Star In The Late 60s as part of the allman brothers band, the group he formed with his brother, duane. You can recognise this music, i suspect, one of their best known songsis suspect, one of their best known songs is the 1973 hitjessica, probably best known in this country as the opening theme tune to top gear. A little bit more on the ba story, a lot of people felt it wasnt handled terribly well, a computerfailure happened, but their response and communication at the woods. What they are saying is, check before travelling to the airport, dont go u nless travelling to the airport, dont go unless you have rebooked on a flight. Unless you have rebooked on a flight. They say you throw is continuing to provide Additional Customer Service colleagues at the terminal, so you will see more people assisting passengers, handing out free water and snacks. We are very sorry to any passengers whose journeys have been affected over the weekend, heathrow in particular, gatwick should be back to normal today. Lets catch up with the sport, jess is with us, busy weekend, celtic are unbeaten in the scottish game this season, and arsenal fa cup winners once again. Fantastic scenes of celebration for arsenal, but where have they been all season . Werent they brilliant yesterday . Absolutely exceptional, passion, desire we have not seen that throughout the whole season. If they had played like that in the league, that they would have finished in the champions league. Chelsea did have a man sent off. When my chelsea were not at their best, but arsenal were deserved winners. Good morning, everyone. Arsene wenger says well know about his future next week, after guiding arsenal to yet another fa cup triumph. After missing out on the top four in the premier league, it was his last chance for success this season. And against champions chelsea, they delivered a 2 1win. 0lly foster was at wembley for us. If this is Arsene Wengers last act, its a very precious one. Salvaging silver at the end of a very difficult season. Im very proud because you see what kind of fight you have when you want to win one and you have to go through all the rounds, and if nobody has done it before, you know, im proud for having done two things that have not been done, win the championship without losing a game and win seven fa cups. So its not easy, believe me. This is a record 13th fa cup for arsenal. Yes, they they deserve this trophy, but should they really have been allowed that opening goal . Alexis sanchez scored this inside the first five minutes. Its a goal that will go straight onto the syllabus at referee school. Anthony taylor didnt spot the handball. The linesman flagged for offside against aaron ramsey, who seemed to be interfering with play taylor wasnt impressed by that either. The goal stood. They could have scored more, chelsea captain gary cahill had to clear off his line twice, Danny Welbecks header hit a post, and ramsey couldnt turn it in. The champions regrouped after half time, david 0spina was suddenly much busier in the gunners goal. They should have had a breather when victor moses was sent off for diving, but ten man chelsea conjured an equaliser, diego costa gave them hope. Three minutes later, and Aaron Ramsey Stooped and conquered. Commentator arsenal in front once more, aaron ramsey scores for the gunners costa was so close to equalising again, but 0spina was brilliant again. This might have been chelseas season, but this was very much arsenals day. 0lly foster, bbc news, at wembley. Now how many times have i said this, this season . Celtic have won theyve just wrapped up the scottish cup, adding to the Scottish Premiership and league cup titles theyve already won, making it an undefeated domestic treble winning season for them. They left it late to Beat Aberdeen in the cup final. The game looked to be heading for extra time when tom rogic scored the winner in the second minute of injury time. They might have struggled in europe, but Brendan Rogers invincibles have dominated the game in scotland, in his first season in charge. Its been a dream. You could never have sat down with any manager coming in at the beginning of the season and write down what we would have done. I said to the players just before we went out, this is a game where you want them to write about it afterwards, but you have to make it, you have to make history, it doesntjust happen. The players went out and did that, and the second half in particular they were brilliant. In rugby union, Exeter Chiefs have won their first ever premiership title. It really went down to the wire against wasps in the final. It was all square after 80 minutes, but an extra time penalty was just enough for the chiefs, as they banished any bad memories from losing last years final. Its been quite a rise for exeter, who only seven years ago won promotion to the top league, the premiership. Scarlets are the new champions of the pro12 after an exciting 116 22 win over munster. A nice send off for liam williams, who scored on his last appearance for scarlets, before he moves to saracens next season. The welsh side ran in six tries in all, to cap an impressive play off campaign. Englands cricketers have been playing well against the the worlds number one side, south africa, and have wrapped up the one day series. Put in to bat, england set a Victory Target of 331, thanks largely to a century from ben stokes. South africa battled back and took the game to the very final ball, but they couldnt get the four runs they needed. England are now 2 0 up in the three match series and in good form ahead of next weeks champions trophy. Itll be a big test, especially when the real pressures on, but like i say, we wanted to win this series, because theyre the number one in the world, its going to be tough for us with expectation now, but i think were up to it, i think weve got some great Match Winners and a really strong team. Lewis hamilton says hes devastated that hell start todays Monaco Grand Prix from 12th on the grid. The briton couldnt explain why his mercedes was so off the pace in qualifying. His final attempt to get into the top ten was thwarted when mclarens Stoffel Vandoorne crashed, but hamilton felt it made little difference. Kimi raikkonen will start from pole for the first time in nine years, with Championship Leader and ferrari team mate Sebastian Vettel alongside him. Ben ainslies Great Britain Team Arejoint leaders after the first day of their americas cup Qualification Campaign in bermuda. Despite mixed results in practice, they won their opening race against sweden, but in their second race were penalised for this crash against japan. Its still enough to see them equal with usa in the standings. No one wanted it or was looking for a collision there, sometimes it happens. Again, i thought we did a greatjob to get around the course, considering the damage we had. We were hanging in there most of the race despite that. Yeah, the day bodes well for the team, and weve got to go and fix the damage. 0ur Shore Team are the best in the game, and theyll do everything they can to get us out there racing tomorrow. Mixed fortunes for the britons in boxing. Kell brook was beaten in his homecoming world title fight in sheffield. He lost his ibf Welterweight Title to the american Errol Spencejunior after sustaining a heavy cut beneath his eye. He fought back, but the injury eventually forced brook to his knees in the 11th round, and the referee called an end to the fight. Tooth decay is the biggest cause of Hospital Admissions in england for children underfive, and the british dentaljournal is warning those from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to require treatment. Dominic hughes has been finding out what can be done to prevent it. It is important to brush your teeth because. They get too sticky. And you will get holes in your teeth. You will not be able to eat anymore. A class of excited four to five year olds are discovering more about teeth how to clean them and keep them free of decay. Andrew wilson is the dentist behind this project. He has come to salford, one of the worst places for tooth decay in england. He believes it is never too early to learn about teeth. If you are making it fun, children will lap up information, and they will hopefully go home and talk to mum and dad, and hopefully they will think about what they are doing with brushing their teeth. As part of his mission, he has developed a series of films to help teachers in the classroom. Given the consequences for children if tooth decay goes unchecked, these are lessons that need to be learned. Classes like this one matter because tooth decay is by far the biggest reason children are admitted to hospital. Many dentists say that educating children and families is important because the dangers of tooth decay are being overlooked. Children are going into accident and emergency for a variety of dental problems. They first come to the department with quite bad diseases, with things like abscesses. The second type come in because of pain caused by quite bad decay and tooth pain. They dont need it in a hospital, they need to see a dentist. Tooth decay is Com Pletely Preve Nta Ble but is closely linked to a sugary diet. If left unaffected, it could affect sleeping, eating and even growth and self esteem. After the lesson today, these children from salford will go home knowing how to take care of their teeth, and what happens if they dont. People who see me smile will think i did not take care of my teeth when i was younger. That i ate too many sweets and did not brush my teeth. If you break them, you will not have any, because after your grown up teeth, you will not get any more. Dominic hughes, bbc news, salford. Were joined by professor chris deery who is a consultant in paediatric dentistry and a spokesperson the british dental association. Good morning. Now, this has been the trend in recent years, we know it is getting worse, what is driving it . Children and brushing their teeth . Is it diet . Both . It is both, tooth decay is completely preventable, as it said in the clip you just run, brushing your teeth twice a day. With young children, notjust sending them to the bathroom, going in and brushing them for them. On the other hand, it is controlling the other hand, it is controlling the diet, access to sweet and particularly liquid sugars. Like what . The things you would of, cordials, fizzy pop, but also fruit juice, just any. The only things that are safe milk and water. You would think that renting something through a straw, going straight down, you are not chewing it, it would be less harmful . Scientifically, it is potentially less harmful, but the difference between science and the real world, in the real world the sugar gets around your mouth and causes decay, it is not an answer. You say that pa rents it is not an answer. You say that parents need to stand with their children, up to what kind of age . When i was a dental student, we said until we tied our shoelaces, but children now have velcro but it is about seven or eight. Round about that time. In scotland and wales, they have had significant interventions in recent years which seem to have had some success. In england, it can be very patchy, cant it . In scotland, they have a scheme which goes into nurseries and schools, they do supervised brushing once a day, they apply a fluoride of varnish, which is a sticky toothpaste with a high fluoride content. Many young people watching may have had it, it most commonly tastes of banana, and it reduces decay by 30 . That is significant. Are there and a dentist for children to get to . Access is a big problem, and it is a bigger problem for the poorer end of society. Paediatric dentists, which i am one of, specialising in children, we are particularly rare, so if you have got really bad decay and you need specialist treatment, it is a very patchy service. And it can be very traumatic having extractions in hospital, never mind the pressure on the nhs. Yes, it is like any operation, it carries significant at the pain and the whole stress of having it done, parents are really worried. Thank you very much for coming in. Nice to meet you. Thats it from us today. Breakfast will be back tomorrow from six. Until then, have a lovely weekend. Goodbye.
