Were talking around a 6 degrees. So, a bright start to the day. I wouldnt go as far as saying its going to be a sunny day on friday, but it is going to be a bright one. Schools in england are counting down the days until some therell be some scattered clouds, and actually in the north of the country peoples return to the at times, it will cloud over classroom on the first ofjune and there will be a little bit of fleeting rain. Pupils. The members of the now, temperatures are just starting to rise Teachers Union says they want a little bit now. In fact, were expecting around 17 degrees in the south reassurance about the risks of the transmission of the virus of the country and around 13 between children and adults. Degrees for our northern towns and cities. Schools are already taking like and friday and towards the weekend, well start to see increased cleaning, reducing High Pressure building in from the south. Class sizes, staggering the this is actually going start and end of the school day to help to introduce some slightly warmer air from the southern climes, for different groups of pupils so day by day those temperatures will be creeping up just that little bit. And creating one way systems around their sites. But teachers are asking why the government is recommending saturdays actually going to be people wear face masks on very similar to friday, so sunny spells across the uk public transport and at the supermarket but is not schools. And some spots of rain in the very far north of scotland, in the Northern Isles weve always said that we very much hope to see schools and the northern highlands. So, temperatures around 17 degrees again in london, but perhaps rising a little bit returning in the week of the across the north of england first ofjune. We will continue there, 16 for yorkshire, 1a for glasgow and edinburgh. In fact, next week, setting down a timetable for lifting restrictions on schools the indication is that and businesses. But like temperatures could hit england, it is expected to use the mid 20s, so again its going to feel more likejune. A traffic light system based on thats it from me. The rate of infection. Patrons are making an excited return to pubs and clubs just when you really needed a in New South Wales today, as the australian state allows them to reopen their doors. Holiday, spain introduces a a maximum of 10 patrons will be allowed to sit and dine 1a day quarantine on while bars and gaming travellers. So how is tourism looking in the time of facilities will remain closed. Coronavirus . For more, imjoined by correspondent, shaimaa khalil, whos in sydney. I was going to say, line them hello and welcome to audiences up, but can you actually sit at in the uk and around the world. The bar behind you and have a were covering all the latest coronavirus developments here in britain and globally. Drink . Well, you cant sit at the bar and have a drink but what you can do is sit in the dining area and have a meal and spains government has said a drink which many people have all visitors entering the country from abroad must go been doing at the royal albert into quarantine for 1a days from today. Hall, this local pub in central that matches the uks sydney. We cant quite show you announcement that a two week quarantine for new arrivals the dining area because it is is in the offing. Actually at a maximum of ten what will such measures mean for europes tourist industry as it approaches what would people just now. People actually at a maximum of ten peoplejust now. People have normally be its peak season . Been given slots of one to two joining me now is the hours and have been fully independent travel expert simon calder. Booked here. Theyre actually even turning people away who showed up stop that is how excited people are to be out and about. Over the morning, we saw people going excitedly to simon, that is pretty bad news sit down and have a coffee and eating a cafe as well. But the if you were perhaps thinking of an immediate holiday but is ten people rule applies really that it, is spain saying. To all public spaces. So, basically, forget it . No, in cafes, restaurants, shops, even places of worship. A big day fa ct basically, forget it . No, in fact actually, david, quite the opposite. What spain is saying forfamilies as is that we are nearing the end places of worship. A big day for families as well, david, because playgrounds are open as of what they call a state of well. It is back to the swings alarm due to expire in nine for the children. Its not days time. And because they quite business as usual but it are in this phase of what they isa quite business as usual but it is a exiled relief body for call deescalation, they have decided that everybody coming many people here as he states 00 15 40,711 2147483051 44 35,527 cautiously try to reopen the 2147483051 44 35,527 4294966103 13 29,430 economy. In from abroad into spain must self isolate for two weeks because they do not wish to have any sudden surge of cases. But once the state of alarm is lifted, and yes it may be extended by a week or two. Then they will be able to move toward Something Like a actual proper summer toward Something Like a actual proper summer season. Toward Something Like a actual proper summer season. Of course, spain, one of the giants of European Tourism alongside france. They are desperate for visitors and the money that they bring, they create so much employment. Therefore they are basically looking at restarting operations at scale injuly, assuming that the deescalation plans work. That sounds a bit brighter doesnt it, the idea ofa brighter doesnt it, the idea of a two week holiday when you are stuck in quarantine is clearly not going to work. I think also, simon, isnt one of the challenges going to be, to a have to look at what spain is doing, what italy is doing, what cyprus is doing . Is there going to ultimately be some sort of alignment here . That is the real problem because of course, youve got a great number of people who have decided at that various National Government levels to do things differently. There has been a remarkable european disunity on this. Lets just ta ke disunity on this. Lets just take the three baltic republics, former soviet states. Estonia, latvia, before any hour, they have created their own travel bubble this week. They say we are putting up week. They say we are putting up the barriers to everybody from the outside but you can travel freely within that zone. You have austria, which earlier this week opened up, germany is moving ahead quite swiftly. I believe they are opening some of their borders today and will have them all open onjune 15. Have them all open onjune15. June 15 is the date the European Union has cited as a good day to aim for. But each state is acting in what it sees as its best interests and that means the poor, confused traveller has very little idea about what they might or might not be able to do the summer. Very briefly, simon, the uk is no longer in the eu, so does it alone do you think ill go its own way . Very much its own way. Very late in the day there is going to be a 1a day on arrivals, quarantine, in the uk which will start at the end of the month was not a huge amount of distress has been caused to the travel industry that says, basically we were just getting back on ourfeet basically we were just getting back on our feet are now this is going to destroy our summer. Thank you very much indeed, simon. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing company, the worlds biggest contract manufacturer of computer chips, has announced plans to build an approximately 12 billion advanced chip factory in arizona. Lets go to our Asia Business hub where Sharanjit Leyl has been following the story. Someone investing some money on something, that is a start in itself thats right. The height of this pandemic, extraordinary. But its really no big surprise that in a week where President Trump dialled up where President Trump dialled up the rhetoric against china, one of taiwans most Successful Companies is making this quite savvy m ove , companies is making this quite savvy move, Taiwan Semiconductor, they are the worlds biggest manufacturer of computer chips and have announced a plan to build a 12 billion chips factory in arizona which will create as many as 1600 jobs and thousands more via supply chains. It will produce the most sophisticated new generation of what is called nanometre chips. These are the chips that provide the computing muscle from everything to iphones to la pto ps, everything to iphones to laptops, game consoles, servers, and critical internet infrastructure. This Taiwanese Company says the construction is planned to start in 2021 and production to begin in 202a, and once its operating, it would churn out a summer 20,000 Semiconductor Wafers per month. The announcement a big win for President Trump who has really pushed for this sort of thing for major chipmakers to set up shop inside the us. Of course, he is very keen to reduce the reliance on asia as all of these tensions simmer with trade over china, over trade, tariffs, and other stuff with the pandemic. Most of the Taiwan Semiconductor factories are located in taiwan but this new money facility would be the firms Second Valley battering site in the firms Second Valley battering site immunoassays. Every statement there with a Taiwanese Company setting up shop in the us. Thank you. Europes largest economy germany publishes its First Quarter gdp figures on later today. Its expected to show the economy contracted by 2. 3 its worst performance since the Global Financial crisis in 2009. But as countries begin to take tentative steps out of lockdown what could a possible recovery look like for germany and more broadly the eu and how long before we see it . Has the likelihood of a bounce back as predicted early on in the pandemic vanished . Joining me now is dan kemp, chief Investment Officer at Morningstar Investment Management emea. Very good to see you and thank you forjoining us. Look, 2. 3 contraction is bad but that is no surprise that it is that bad. It is one of the least worst performances presumably . David, that is absolutely right. It is not a surprise but we also need to remember that like all Economic Growth statistics, it is backward looking. It tells us what happened until the end of march. And of course, although that feels like a long time ago, it wasjust that feels like a long time ago, it was just really the beginning of the Economic Impact of covid 19. And so we are likely to see more of the same, possibly even a deeper contraction in the Second Quarter of this year. That brings with it more bad news and more anxiety but for investors, it is so important that we look beyond the short Term Economic numbers and long into the future because thatis long into the future because that is what is going to make the difference in investments and the pensions people have. And certainly, the short to medium and even quite long term, still very difficult to say anything with much certainty. At least presumably, youre about one of the most robust economies, certainly in europe . Well, it is one of the most robust economies. It is full of really good companies, well meaning companies. But if you remember, it was already struggling through 2019. We saw Economic Growth there of about 0. 6 in 2019 compared to 1. 9 across the eurozone as a whole. That is because of concerns about the global trade and trade war, youll remember, between china and the us which was dragging on at the German Economy and also on sentiment. So again, from an investors perspective, there is a lot of bad news already priced into German Companies even before covid 19 happen. German Companies Even before covid19 happen. You think so there is a chance of a mini bounceback, possibly, simply because germany, it feels, slightly ahead of the pack within the eu. It has had a pretty well managed campaign in terms of the Coronavirus Crisis and is starting to open up ain . And is starting to open up again . Well, it is starting to open up again as you said. Its followed a different path and that maybe well give people some optimism but it is so important at this point is not to make short term forecasts. But really to look further ahead. This crisis, this recession is very different from the recession is that weve seen before. It is a deliberate recession in response to a Health Crisis so the path out of that will again depend on health and notjust the economic recovery. So, its important not to make short term forecasts but also remember that although there is the german domestic economy, because of its link to the Global Economy, the Economic Growth in germany ought to be dependent on what is happening in china, what is happening in the us and around the world. It is very plugged into that Global Economy and not just what is happening mystically but elsewhere. Again, from an investment perspective, think about what is already in the prices of the company there when making investment decisions. Dan, i will call that a realistic and sobering perspective of germanys prospects. Thank you very much indeed. Lets get some of the days other news. Us President Donald Trump has warned that he could quote cut off the whole relationship with china. Its the latest escalation of tensions with beijing over the coronavirus pandemic and once again casts doubt on the us china trade deal signed earlier this year. Chinas industrial output rose a higher than expected 3. 9 in april from a year earlier, expanding for the first time this year as the worlds second largest economy emerged from its coronavirus lockdown. Consumption remained weak though, with retail sales falling 7. 5 in april, faster than a forecast 7. 0 decline. In spite of rising jobless claims we saw in the us on thursday, theres one big American Firm promising to keep its staff for the rest of the year. Retaining its 20,000 employees around the world, is a key decision the ceo of mastercard is making. Ajay banga told the bbc in an exclusive interview, how hes dealing with this unprecedented crisis, and why he only sees an economic recovery later next year. Im not planning on getting back to before covid 19 growth scenarios for another year. I think that will be sometime next year. If a vaccine is readily available and readily distributed. So, that is how we are planning. It is that knowledge that provides us with some degree of confidence in thinking through the planning process. How do you get through this . Will number one, two, three, is you have to take care of your employees first. They are the engine of your firm of your employees first. They are the engine of yourfirm and their creativity, diversity and ideas are there feel. If you help them feel safe and secure and cared for, and there is no starting point. The worst thing we did, was to give them the option to work from home. The second thing was to tell them that theirjobs were safe and there would be no virus related layoffs this year. And therefore instead of worrying about theirjob, therefore instead of worrying about their job, they should worry about each other, worry about their families, worry about their families, worry about their families, worry about their clients, worry about their clients, worry about delivering the kind of service we would like to be known for as a company. And our International Viewers can watch more of that interview, in a special edition of talking business asia leading in crisis over the weekend on bbc world at the times on your screen. You are watching bbc news, the headlines this hour at least 35 babies born to surrogate mothers, are stranded in ukraine because coronavirus restrictions have prevented their biological parents from picking them up. Im worried that many people could die from covid 19. Health care facilities in the camps are basic, with no ventilators. Charities are expecting the number of cases to skyrocket. Its very difficult to say but, given the cramped hygiene and the slow testing that we have, it could be anywhere in the thousands, hundreds, and it is very likely we will see an explosion in cases in the camps in the coming days. Officials are currently trying to trace hundreds of others who may have come into contact with the two confirmed cases. How is the pandemic affecting women in germany . Women have decreased in the Labour Force Participation even more. More than 2a . They took on a very old and traditional gender roles. They had to care for their children because they was no childcare and school did not open and they had to care for their husbands. How is that Life Satisfaction then . We measured more than 10,000 people which we investigated. An it has dropped tremendously for women. It is dissatisfaction notjust for women. It is dissatisfaction not just for work but Family Affairs as well. I can imagine the pandemic in india hasjust added to the inequalities already existing . India has been under Strict Lockdown so the long term and short term effects of what it means in terms of employment and a labour situation will unfold when is the lockdown lives but some of the effects are already quite visible. Within the household, domestic violence, you have seen helplines receive a spike, there is also concern about the fact that a major sharing of domestic chores may persist and become more unequal. A crucial dimension of gender is that the frontline Health Workers in india are almost exclusively women. Women who are out on the street every day, contact tracing, gathering information. They are extremely poorly paid, very limited protective gear and have been asked to pay for it themselves and, in addition, they are also being socially ostracised because of the stigma of the disease. There are many different dimensions of gender inequality during covid 19. Have you seen anything positive about the experience of women, particularly working from home during the pandemic . We have not seen it yet. So far in the us, higher unemployment for women compared to men for the reason that childcare responsibilities have gone up and it still falls on women. There is a silver lining. If you think about the reason why we have gender inequality in the first place, enter the workplace it has to do with what we are all experiencing now, the difficulty of combining career obligations with family obligations. There is still an expectation that women do more of this work. Making it easier to combine a career with ankara children. There are some developments right now that could be helpful in the long run. Not right now but later in the recovery. For example, work flexibility. We have employers adopting to working from home and working in zoom calls and this flexibility should be available to anybody raising children in the future for combining careers with families. |j the future for combining careers with families. I wanted to share a graphic of a survey done by the New York Times that shows that a5 of men believe they have spent more time homeschooling the children at the secondary thing is that only 3 of women actually agree with that. We have a real perception issue here. For sure there is misperception. We know that meant are doing a little bit more than before but i stress a little bit more and this does not change the overall picture and i am not sure whether the home office is increasing the Career Prospects of women in future times because they do not have a room where they can go, they do not have the techniques and they cannot do too many things at the same time. Have women been involved in the Decision Making in india . Have we seen part of the covid 19 Response Team . In india . Have we seen part of the covid19 Response Team . One of the crucial parts about the indian policy making is of the crucial parts about the indian policy making is that, unless women are involved as Decision Makers in every level of government, it is hard to address gender concerns. We have prominent women, ministers and chief ministers, and that is very good but, overall, the representation of women in the Decision Making body is not that high at all. I think what that high at all. I think what that does is it makes the problems of the gender impacts invisible and we have to stress, at this point, being gender blind does not mean gender blind does not mean gender neutral so if you think you want equality for everybody, that is what you need to have gender neutral policies and you make and already unequal situation worse. Improved gender equality, policies would have to be gender targeted. A bit of a problem in germany as well, with gender norms being played out on a political stage and through the media as well stop it is exactly the same story. You see only man on the television. Using women and they are taking care of the kids. You never see men taking of the kids. Of course, this gives more speech to this traditional gender roles. Women have now been used to be in the labour force and they want to work and get out but we forgot to open it childcare, to have a plan for opening schools altogether, compared for example to scandinavian countries. This also needs to change in the us for there to bea change in the us for there to be a Global Impact from the pandemic . That has to be higher awareness of these issues. Awareness is increasing right now. We are seeing reports for men and women really realising the difficulty of dealing with it childcare while also working. One thing i want to point out, even if that the data shows that women do the vast majority of childcare in the crisis, we have seen a large increase in the number of families as a man as a main provider of childcare. The mother may be a doctor, works ina grocery mother may be a doctor, works in a Grocery Store and has to be at work or is the father is able to work from home and becomes by default the main provider of childcare. We do have millions of men who for the first time a really experiencing what it is like to bea experiencing what it is like to be a primary Childcare Provider andl be a primary Childcare Provider and i think it will have some impact on social norms in the long term. Impact on social norms in the longterm. We can only hope. Thank you for all of you to join us. Good to have you all with us. You are up to date. Thank you for being on bbc news. Hello. Well, its fairly chilly out there at the moment, but nowhere near as cold as the last couple of nights. Last night in northern ireland, it was down to 6 degrees celsius, the coldest may night there in nearly a0 years. This morning, most major towns and cities will be generally above zero, but it is cold air thats sitting on top of us at the moment. You can see the pale blue colours there. The really cold airs to the north of us, but were certainly in that chilly air mass. Well have to wait before the warmer air from the southern climes arrives, and thats not going to happen for a few more days. So, the forecast for friday morning, well, early hours of the morning shows some clear weather, but also patchy cloud. Temperatures in norwich close to freezing. That does mean a ground frost outside of town, but more generally speaking, were talking around a 6 degrees. So, a bright start to the day. I wouldnt go as far as saying its going to be a sunny day on friday, but it is going to be a bright one. Therell be some scattered clouds, and actually in the north of the country at times, it will cloud over and there will be a little bit of fleeting rain. Now, temperatures are just starting to rise a little bit now. In fact, were expecting around 17 degrees in the south of the country and around 13 degrees for our northern towns and cities. And friday and towards the weekend, well start to see High Pressure building in from the south. This is actually going to help to introduce some slightly warmer air from the southern climes, so day by day those temperatures will be creeping up just that little bit. Saturdays actually going to be very similar to friday, so sunny spells across the uk and some spots of rain in the very far north of scotland, in the Northern Isles and the northern highlands. So, temperatures around 17 degrees again in london, but perhaps rising a little bit across the north of england there, 16 for yorkshire, 1a for glasgow and edinburgh. And then saturday night into sunday, we are going to see a change in western scotland and northern ireland. In fact, southwesterly winds will blow in cloud, moisture and a fair bit of rain, so it could be quite wet here second half of the weekend. Around 15 degrees expected in the lowlands and in belfast, but to the south of that in london, those milder southwesterlies, temperatures will get up to around 20 degrees. And indeed, you can see those temperatures climbing as we head into next week. In fact, next week, the indication is that temperatures could hit the mid 20s, so again its going to feel more likejune. Thats it from me. Bye bye. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Our headlines today is it safe to go back to school in june . Teachers unions in england will meet government scientists amid concerns over the return to class. A call for nhs workers whove treated coronavirus patients to get the same Mental Health support as soldiers returning from war. It will be like having 15 20 patients for really on the edge, who are going to die in the next few hours if you dont do every thing, in the next 12 hours. Thats how bad it is. Good morning.
