You are not showing t im so happy, happy new year. And its uphill all the way. Whats it like to live on the steepest street in the world . Good morning, its tuesday, 3rd january. Im ben brown, welcome to bbc news room live. A man has been shot dead by police in an operation near the m62 motorway In Huddersfield yesterday evening. West Yorkshire Police say the operation was pre planned Atjunction 2a near ainley top, and that 5 people were arrested, they said it was not related to terrorism. The independent Police Complaints commission has sent investigators to the scene. Its the 5th Fatal Police Shooting in england and wales within 9 months. Our home affairs correspondent, danny shaw, reports. The shooting happened shortly after 6 oclock yesterday evening on a slip road off the m62 at ainley top, near huddersfield. West Yorkshire Police say the incident took place during a preplanned policing operation, suggesting officers had acted on intelligence, rather than responding to an unexpected event. The force said a Police Firearm was discharged and a man died. No one else is believed to have been injured. The independent Police Complaints commission was informed, and has sent its own investigators to the scene, which has been cordoned off. Photographs from the area appear to indicate that a number of Unmarked Police vehicles may have stopped a car on the slip road before the shooting, though that hasnt been confirmed. Although Fatal Police Shootings are rare, its the fifth such incident in england and wales in the last nine months, and the first involving west Yorkshire Police since december 2010. Lets go live now to our correspondent phil bodmer, whos at the scene. Phil, we can see behind you, those Green Screens where it happened. What is going on there right now . Well, ben, whati what is going on there right now . Well, ben, what i can tell you in fa ct well, ben, what i can tell you in fact is that in the last half an hour or fact is that in the last half an hourorso, fact is that in the last half an hour or so, officers in White Forensics cover alls have hour or so, officers in White Forensics coveralls have been working behind those Green Screens. They were erected across the carriageway by the police this morning, i suppose to stop the prying eyes and media lenses looking at what is going on. But behind them, those cars involved in the incident at 6. 00pm last night. 0ne them, those cars involved in the incident at 6. 00pm last night. One a white audi. You can visibly see it has been shot at. There are bullet holes in the front windscreen and bonnet. It is surrounded by another car, a silver Mercedes E Class, and a couple of larger vehicles. We think they are police cars, this vehicle has been boxed in. This is westbound slip road of the m62 exit at ainley top, the road into huddersfield. It would appear this was a pre planned Police Operation. And it would appear officers deliberately have done a hard stop to bring whatever they were chasing to bring whatever they were chasing toa to bring whatever they were chasing to a halt but it would appear that something has not worked out the way they would have intended and a man has died as a result of it. But it is being stressed that this incident was not related to terrorism, as for as we know. Thats right. West Yorkshire Police say it is not a terror related incident and the ipcc have echoed that. They are investigating. There is an automatic referring, of course when somebody is shot by the police, the upcc automatically gets involved the ipcc. This would appear to have been a planned operationt ipcc. This would appear to have been a planned operation t would appear to be the cars, vehicles would have been targeted to police and perhaps followed when they came to rest at this particular section of the m62. You can see in the Background Traffic flowing normally on that route at the moment. But i should add, ben, this caused major congestion in and around the area. The police are now saying that this pa rt the police are now saying that this part of the m62, while these investigations continue this morning, will be sealed off until at least 6 0clockpm, and that will have severe implications for rush hour traffic in this part of the world tonight. Drivers are being advised to avoid the area for the time being until this is brought to a conclusion and this road eventually reopens. 0k, phil, thank you very much. Thats phil there, at the scene. Kurdish militants say a british man has been killed fighting with them against Islamic State militants in syria. Theyve told the bbc that ryan lock, who was 20 and from west sussex, died during an assault on the is stronghold of raqqa just before christmas. Its believed he travelled to syria last august, and joined a Kurdish Volunteer group known as the ypg. In a statement, his Fatherjohn Lock said Mark Campbell a prove kurdish activist spoke a short time ago on behalf of mr locks family and said they are still coming to terms with they are still coming to terms with the news of his death. The family have deeply in grief at the moment and not wanting to think about Anything Su Surrounding The Kurds or isis. They found out, ryan fell on 21st December but there is a process by which the ypg have been trying to confirm that it was actually him and that confirmation came through to them on friday. And we went to pay our condolences and offer our help, in terms of any possible retrieving of the body at a later date but the whole of the kurdish community, all around the world, their hearts are with the lock family today. Mark campbell. Several syrian rebel groups say theyve suspended discussions for a planned Peace Conference in kazakhstan later this month. They say its because of Syrian Government ceasefire violations. A british based Monitoring Group says syrian warplanes have been carrying out more aid raids on districts near damascus. Lets go live now to beirut and our correspondent lina sinjab. Lina is monitoring events in syria. So, what is the significance of this latest development, as far as any hopes of peace go . Well, the good point is that they havent suspended the ceasefire, all of it, but they said they are not going to further talk about the preparation for peace talks. So this is a sign and a room for manoeuvre with the russians to pressure the Syrian Government to abide by this deal, that they said, the russians, that they are going to guarantee the military commitment by the Syrian Government, which, of course, we have seen over the past few days that they have violated on several occasions. 0n few days that they have violated on several occasions. On saturday, the rebels issued them an ultimatum to russia, saying that they should pressure the government to stop the attacks on a suburb on damascus, where at least 100,000 civilians are trapped. We have seen some developments. The Air Bombardment stopped but then resumed again and has intensified over the past two days, which is why the rebels have said they are not going to go any further in talks, or probably they wont continue in the Operation U Nless wont continue in the operation unless you do something about the Syrian Government. Not only the Syrian Government. Not only the Syrian Government. Not only the Syrian Government but also the Shia Militias supporting them, who advanced of the woman in Eastern Damascus and have retaken a few towns there. Advanced of the government. Is there any optimism at all, we have seen so many peace plans, that 2017 might be a year when this dreadful civil war would come to an end . Well, ben there were lots of hopes when the plan was announced by russia on thursday, just to say that there would be a nationwide ceasefire followed by meetings in Kaza Khsta N Ceasefire followed by meetings in kazakhstan between the government and opposition and if everything goes well, there would be us backed talks in geneva. The details of the plan are very optimistic, the russians are trying to find a political solution to the settlement. Of course they are trying to win the time before a new Us Administration comes into office but the continuous violations by the Syrian Government, backed mainly by iranian and Shia Militias, are putting things at stake. We have not seen anything from the russian side that signed and approved of the ceasefire. So the ball is in the hands of the russians who have the upper hand and who are able to control the government. Thank you very much, lina, reporting from beirut. The Ministry Of Defence says a british soldier has died in iraq. Protests are taking place at Railway Stations across the country, in response to yesterdays average Fare Increase of 2. 3 . Protests are protests a re in protests are in london, birmingham, manchester. Theyve been organised by the action for rail group, which wants Rail Services to be returned to public ownership. 0ur correspondent, daniel boettcher, is at Kings Cross Station in Central London for us. Yes, ben, there was protests here this morning. About 30 to a0 people, as you say there, also protests in a number of other cities, a number of other stations. It was about this rise in railfares, an average of 2. 3 . And for the regulated fares, which include most Season Tickets on commuter routes, the increase was 1. 9 . That was based on lastjulys Rpi Inflation figure. Now, these increases apply to england, scotland and wales, not to northern Northern Ireland, tra nslink says and wales, not to northern Northern Ireland, translink says no decision has been taken on Fare Increases yet. We have spoken to some commuters. Well, itll affect me quite a bit. It is over £7,000 a year to commute from peterborough down to london. So, yes, it affects me quite hard in the pocket. But it is something that ive got to do. Me quite hard in the pocket. But it is something that ive got to dolj travel is something that ive got to do. travel in every day. So, it is a big commute for me, so it will be a huge hike in the amount of pay. I get an annualing ticket now, so itll make annualing ticket now, so itll make a huge difference in my outgoings on a huge difference in my outgoings on a monthly basis and annually basis. I commute on southern every day. When the mayor has decided to freeze the fares on the underground for four years, i think it makes sense to freeze the fares on tfl other franchises inside london as well. I think it is probably more fairfor other londoners. So, southern people pay more, compared to the northern network, just because they use thep underground and use the rail franchise. The Campaign Group action for rail looks at one example where it says a monthly Season Ticket from luton to london cost £387, which is 1496 luton to london cost £387, which is 1a of average monthly earnings, compared with that a similar route in germany where it is 3 or france where it is 2 of average earnings. The Rail Delivery Group which represents Train Operating Companies, says 97 p in every pound goes into running and delivering services and it says the government is delivering the biggest rail Improvement Programme for more than a century. Thank you very much, daniel. The latest Headlines Police have shot a man dead during what theyre describing as a pre planned operation to stop a car on the m62 In Huddersfield. Ill be back with more on those stories. A think tank closely linked with labour is warning that the party has almost no chance of winning the next General Election. The Fabian Society says labour is too weak to win a majority and would need to work with rivals like the Liberal Democrats to stand any chance of getting into government. 0ur political correspondent, eleanor garnier, is in westminster for us. Not n ot exa ctly not exactly the sort of new years message that the Labour Party Leadership were hoping for. Thats exactly right. I think its also not the start that labour mps will be wanting for 2017. Having said, that i dont think the findings in this report will be a surprise to anyone here in westminster. Politicians from the labour party, but also the conservatives, too. Yes, it is a pretty melancholy message, that labour is too weak to win, yet too strong to die and this Report Points out that the party would need to win 3 million more votes than the conservatives to win a majority at the next General Election. Something this report concludes is currently unthinkable. It also points out the problems the party has with brexit, with the tories, and ukip targeting labours leave voters and then on the other side, the lib dems targeting labours remain voters, all the while this report says labours own message on brexit isnt clear and is inconsistent this. Piece of analysis was written by the general secretary of the fabian soiety, Andrew Harrop and he has been drawing parallels between the labour party in the uk and the democrats in the united states. Labour are in a very similar position to Hillary Clinton in the united states. They could win more votes than the conservatives but go on to lose the election, in terms of how many mps they get. It is very hard for them to get a majority of mps because the Scottish Nationalist Party has won almost all seats in scotland. So, labour will be in the position of being very, very unlikely to win a majority, but far more likely to be in a position to form a partnership with other Political Parties and perhaps form a minority government, if they make some progress. So, eleanor, this comes at a time when the leader of the one of the biggest unions, unite has been talking about Jeremy Corbyn, biggest unions, unite has been talking aboutJeremy Corbyn, maybe, not hanging on as Labour Leader right up until the next General Election. Thats right. Yesterday we had that from len mccluskey, saying that perhaps jeremy had that from len mccluskey, saying that Perhaszeremy Corbyn and John Mcdonnell may need to look elsewhere, if things didnt improve for the party in the next few years. He said look, they are not the kind of people that hold on to power for power sake. Later in the day, he did say that he fully supported Jeremy Corbyn. But i think it is just another example of the pressures that the Party Leadership is under and the difficulty it faces to try and win more parliamentary seats here in westminster, with obviously the membership of the party really picking up sinceJeremy Corbyn has been in charge of the party. But the lack of support that mps here in westminster have for him, creating a very difficult predicament for the party, of course we put all of the fabian soietys analysis to jeremy we put all of the fabian soietys analysis toJeremy Corbyns office and they said it was always going to be difficult to rebuild the party after the 2015 General Election. They said that labour underJeremy Corbyn would be taking its case right around the country in the next few months, with a really strong message to voters up and down the country and they added thatJeremy Corbyn was the only genuine alternative to what they call a failed political establishment. All right, thank you very much indeed eleanor. Thousands of new Starter Homes have been given the go ahead to be built on brownfield sites across england. The properties will be available for First Time Buyers aged between 23 and a0, at 20 less than the market value. Labour says the target of 200,000 Starter Homes by 2020 isnt possible. But the housing minister, Gavin Barwell says its all part of a wider plan. I think there is a lot of Different Things we need to do to help people in this country find more affordable housing. We have shared ownership, we have the help to buy scheme already, right to buy if you are living in a council or Housing Association property. The fundamental solution to this is to build more homes, so that housing becomes more affordable. Thats going to take time. We cant sit here and not do anything in the meantime. So, Starter Homes are an important contribution to ensuring that young people have the chance to get on the housing ladder. Donald trump has dismissed a claim by north korea that its developing missiles capable of striking america. In a tweet, the President Elect highlighted a boast in the north Korean Leader kim jong uns new year message that preparations for a Missile Launch had reached the final stage. Mrtrump is adamant that it wont happen. However, its not clear if hes expressing doubts about north Koreas Nuclear capabilities or is planning preventive action. 0ur south korea correspondent steve evans has more. Its those words it wont happen, from the President Elect, it wont happen. Firstly, from the President Elect, it wont happen. Firstly, there from the President Elect, it wont happen. Firstly, there is a political consequence to that, because if it does happen within the four year term, no doubt democrats will say, you said it wont happen but it has but, more importantly, how is he going to stop it happening . Now, there are all kinds of options youd imagine, one might be he doesnt think the regime is going to survive or that he doesnt think the technological ability is there to deliver on the threat. 0r, he may be thinking im going to sit down with kim jong un as he promised before the election, over a burger and persuade him to renounce the Nuclear Ambition or, and this is certainly a Prominence Inference in these parts, he is saying, we will stop it happening if it looks like lie. Children in england are eating half their recommended daily sugar intake before they even get to school thats the warning from health officials. Public Health England say sugary cereals, juices and spreads are to blame and, at a time of spiralling obesity levels, have launched a campaign to help us better understand what our children are eating. Laura tra nt reports. If breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Millions of children consume more than half their daily Sugar Allowance before they even get to school, but a new campaign is aiming to curb that sugar rush. Many parents will think their Breakfast Cereals are healthy, that theyre buying for their children, and theyre actually rather surprised when they find out how much sugar is in them. There are better, lower sugar, alternative Breakfast Cereals on the market. Wed be encouraging parents to have a look at those. Public Health England has launched an app to scan a barcode, and it will tell you how much sugar, salt and fat is in that food. And the results well, they may be surprising. And that is the idea, to help parents make healthier choices. The average child in england has the equivalent of three cubes of sugar every morning for breakfast. The recommended daily maximum amount for children aged four to six years old is five cubes, and for seven to ten year olds, six cubes. By the end of the day, the average child consumes three times more than their daily recommended amount, up to 18 cubes of sugar. With one in five children now starting Primary School overweight or obese, perhaps now, more than ever, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Vinyl sales are at the highest theyve ever been in 25 years, with more than 3. 2 million records sold last year. It marks the ninth Consecutive Year that sales have grown. Its believed sales have been increased because of events such as Record Store Day and an increasing audience among younger fans. It was one of the bloodiest battles during world war one, with 325,000 allied troops and 260,000 german soldiers killed in three months. To honour those who died there, and to mark the 100th anniversary of passchendaele, two events will be held in ypres injuly. 0ur correspondent robert hall reports. My wound was slight, and i was hobbling back. Then a shell burst slick upon the duck boards. So i fell into the Bottomless Mud and lost the light. There was not a sign of life of any sort not a bird, not even a rat or a blade of grass. The words of those who tried to sum up the hell of passchendaele. Three months when more than half a million men died. Three months when the allied army fought an enemy, the mud and the cold to gain a few miles of ground. A century ago, ypres was under siege. The roads leading north climbed steadily to the german lines which overlooked the allies on three sides. After the war, the british made this sanitised documentary about the battle. Tales of personal heroism to distract from the ghastly reality. The reality of uphill advances, a sucking quagmire, and the horrors of machine guns and gas. This years commemorations will be focused in ypres, a city rebuilt from total destruction. There will be a series of events built around remembrance and the need to help visitors understand what happened here. The commemorative events will take place over two days, starting with the traditional last post ceremony at menin gate followed by commorative events in the Market Square the following day. The last post on a freezing night under the menin gate, the bugles sound for the fallen once again. Passchendaele is burnt into ypress turbulent history. Passchendaele is the loss of a lot of lives for us, and a lot of people that we commemorate day after day, and we want to continue the message that the last post has not forgotten. This summers commemorations will be a partnership with a city whose people have never forgotten. So British Transport Police saying that a man has died after a car was hit bya train a man has died after a car was hit by a train At Lidlington in bedfordshire. Well bring you more on that as it comes in. But now well look at the weather prospects. Ben, thank you. There we are, lets carry on. That was night time, by the way. It is looking pretty sunny. This is what it looks like outside today across some southern areas, some sunshine around but really, really frosty first thing across the south here. But you know what, clouds are starting to increase across many Northern Areas. So it does mean that things are going to turn, i think, pretty cloudy across many areas in belfast, glasgow and newcastle hub. But the south is going to stay sunny. This evening, basically what is happening is off the atlantic, we have much milder air coming in, so that will sit on top of us during the course of the night. For many it will be a frost free night. Nowhere near as cold as last night. There might bea near as cold as last night. There might be a couple of pockets of frost here and there. Tomorrow Sta Rts Frost here and there. Tomorrow starts off grey, maybe tiny spots of Rain In The South but look at, that the skies clear up and you get a nice, bright sort of crisp day, still on the chilly side in the north, a degrees, around 8 in london, wednesday night evening, well keep the clear skies which means thursday morning will be very, very frosty start to the day. A think tank closely linked with labour is warning that the party has almost no chance of winning the next General Election. The Fabian Society says labour is too weak to win a majority and would need to work with rivals like the Liberal Democrats to stand any chance of getting into government. With me is matthew goodwin, professor of politics and International Relations at the university of kent. Do you think this report is realistic or from labours do you think this report is realistic orfrom labours point do you think this report is realistic or from labours Point Of View is it unduly pessimistic . think the report by the Fabian Society is spot on in its analysis and it points to a number of challenges facing the labour party. If you think of wherejeremy Corbyns Labour Party is at the moment, just before christmas, labour got 2a in the polls and if that was repeated at a General Election, that is their worst performance since 1918. Forecasts now put the labour party on less than 200 seats, its worst performance since 1935 in terms of seat numbers, so the party is in a crisis stock back and it is more worryingly also behind both the conservatives and dont know as an option when you ask voters which party they back on the top issues. So labour does not control a single issue in british politics any more, not the nhs, housing, the economy. This is a really big challenge for the Labour Movement. What the Fabian Society are saying is one way to a Nswer Society are saying is one way to answer that the challenge is for the labour party to work with rivals like the Liberal Democrats or the scottishness in the lists, or both, to form some sort of centre Left Coalition scottish nationalists. Is that realistic underJeremy Corbyn . That is the only option they have. Assumed they make no recovery in scotland which internal polling is telling the party, labour need to be 12. 5 points ahead in the polls to wina be 12. 5 points ahead in the polls to win a majority, 12. 5 points. It is currently between 13 and 15 points behind so labours only hope of returning to power at the next election is through some form of coalition with the Liberal Democrats, the snp and this discussion around a progressive alliance. The party is no longer competitive in the southern marginal constituencies that its needs and walesjeremy constituencies that its needs and Wales Jeremy Corbyn constituencies that its needs and walesJeremy Corbyn points to labours gains in tooting for example, this is the partys problem, it is building up a lead in territory it already controls and not breaking into new territory. U nless not breaking into new territory. Unless it does that, it can forget about winning a majority at the next election. What are the implications do you think forJeremy Corbyn . The leader of the united union, len mccluskey, one of his closest allies, has suggested he might have to step down if these awful poll ratings continue. My view is Jeremy Corbyn has been disastrous for the labour party. It is true he has attracted an influx of members, there tends to be affluent, professional southerners, a lot of members in london, territory the labour party is already strong that. And labour has haemorrhaged voters to other parties. The Fabian Society report estimates half of labours 2015 voters have abandoned the Labour Movement. And if you compare Jeremy Corbyn with theresa may, among those important over 65 votes, there is a 57 Points Difference in those voters and how they view the leaders as being favourable. Theresa may is 57 points ahead ofJeremy Corbyn. This is unprecedented and so i think the first step for the Labour Movement would to explore its leadership options. The more profound challenge facing not only the labour party and Social Democrats across the west is to think about how they can overhaul that offer the votes and become more competitive. This is britain and the same is happening in france and in germany and the united states, where Social Democrats not re engaging. In particular, white voters who do not have degrees. Thank you very much. That is matthew goodwin. Iman has died after a car was struck by an at a Level Crossing near Liddington Station in bedfordshire. A paralympic athlete and mbe awarded Disabilities Campaigner says she was forced to wet herself on a train because it didnt have an accessible toilet. Anne wafula strike says that she was left humiliated after the three hour journey on a crosscountry train with no working disabled toilet. Despite her embarrassment, she told my colleague, joanna gosling, she decided to go public in the hope it will bring about change for disabled people. I felt very vulnerable and i felt really exposed. I felt humiliated. I felt very vulnerable and i felt really exposed. Ifelt humiliated. I just felt like i was in this big world but nobody was taking notice that i existed, and i needed to use a toilet. We are talking about a basic need. Basic right. That a human being deserves. And i dont think there should be happening in this century. So when did you decide that she wanted to actually start to talk about it publicly . When it first happened to me, i couldnt even look at myself in the merit because i was so embarrassed that i had actually wet myself. And one day, i woke up, i looked at myself in the mirrorand day, i woke up, i looked at myself in the mirror and i said, ijust realised that i am not the only one who is experiencing this. I know so many other people with disabilities going through different and very difficult issues and i said to myself, well, iam difficult issues and i said to myself, well, i am going to speak. And i am just hoping that by any comment public, it is going to end all these things we go on about, self censorship, and we should just realise that when bad things are happening to us, we need to have a voice, we need to speak. Because when that was going on on the train when that was going on on the train when i wet myself, i didnt have a voice, it was all taken away from me. And ifeeli voice, it was all taken away from me. And ifeel i now have a voice, it was all taken away from me. And i feel i now have a voice to speak against it because i should not just sit and light speak against it because i should notjust sit and light in the bed and wants to have dignity when it was all taken away during that incident, and allow other people to suffer the same. I am sure this has happened to disabled people in the past, but they havent felt confident or been able to come and speak publicly about it. Unfortunately, i think that we still have a kind of Tick Box Mentality towards disability and access. For many businesses, today marks the start of a new working year. But what does 2017 have in store for them . A new report from lloyds bank shows that confidence among small and medium sized enterprises, or smes, is stablising since It Hit Record Lows in september. But Many Companies cite Economic Uncertainty as the biggest threat this year. Joining me from the bbc newsroom is gareth 0akley, head of sme banking at lloyds bank. Thank you forjoining us. A new year is often a time of optimism and we have resolutions, but for businesses, there is so much uncertainty in 2017. In the uk, we have uncertainty over how brexit is happening and we have Leadership Elections across europe. In america, we know who the new president is going to be but not necessarily what he is going to do. Would be uncertainty for the economies, are you surprised these businesses are stabilising their confidence . You surprised these businesses are stabilising their confidence . M you surprised these businesses are stabilising their confidence . It is good news is as is feel more optimistic but we need to put that into the context that the last survey we did was just after the referendum businesses. Confidence levels still remain a lot lower than the 25 year average this survey has been running. So it is good news they are optimistic, but not surprising there is this optimism which is cautious in nature. What are they worried about . The biggest concern are they worried about . The biggest concern is Economic Uncertainty. That is followed by weaker demand and then businesses are concerned about Political Uncertainty as well. Different businesses will have different concerns over an issue of currency, so a weak sterling would bea currency, so a weak sterling would be a challenge for an importer and opportunity for an exporter, how do you put that in the survey . The good news is that the exporters having a good time at the moment and confidence levels are increasing and they expect orders to increase in 2017. The of that is that importers expect to increase prices the flip side of that. We are looking at price next year and that is prevalent especially in wholesale and retail. , prevalent especially in wholesale and retail. , and prevalent especially in wholesale and retail. , and confidence is a great sentiment but how many businesses act on it, do many businesses act on it, do many businesses invest or higher . The survey shows that sluggish. Businesses are not going to invest heavily this years and a lot said they will not be hiring either. Anecdotally, a speak to businesses all the time and there does remain some optimism. Smes getting on with thejob in some optimism. Smes getting on with the job in hand some optimism. Smes getting on with thejob in hand and picking up on Investment Opportunities as they see them. And keep very much. Thank you very much. But he has opened and is still going up. Almost half a percent. We mentioned the uncertainty, some markets taking some certainty from the fact although we do not know what the new us president is going to do but at least the markets know who it is going to be so they are finding some certainty. What is boosting market is the oil price, a big deal between 0pec and producers to curb production came into effect on sunday, brent crude up to 58 a barrel. Bp share prices up, and that is driving the ftse forward. Thats all the Business News. 0ne foot note, you are talking about President Donald Trump and we have just heard that President Elect trump has announced robert light heiser as the new Trade Representative. And he is thought to be somebody who would take a tough line on china. He was deputy Trade Representative during the Reagan Administration and takes a tough line on china. We will bring you more on that as we get it. All this week, bbc news is focusing on what the big global stories might be in 2017. Today, we look at science. Baldwin street, In The City Of Dunedin on new zealands south island, is officially the worlds steepest residential road. We went along to find out what its like to live there. You come to this road and its like something weve never seen before this street is really some yup. Lean on me. Quite daunting really, isnt it . Lung burner. Its cool, though. Woo a big round of applause im dave cull, im the mayor of dunedin, and i dont get to walk up Baldwin Street that often. From the bottom, you think oh, yeah, so its a bit steep. When you get halfway up it, like now, then you realise why its the steepest street in the world. Its got a real novelty. And the jaffa race has put it on the world map. And it is quite a sight when you come here and see all those giantjaffas bouncing down the road. My name is dr gary blackman, im a local historian. Now, that photograph shows Baldwin Street in about 1900. Individual ten acre sections were not wide enough to allow a zigzag in a road. My names sharon hyndman, ive been a resident 26 years. The street has definitely increased in popularity, as far as tourism goes. We had about 20 tourists standing in our lounge one day because it rained and they had nowhere else to go. Im Brendan Thompson and im the Community Constable for north dunedin. The street does tend to attract Thrill Seekers and there was an unfortunate incident some years ago where there was a fatality. Two people got themselves into a wheelie bin. Unfortunately, one of them died when they collided with a trailer. Treat it with respect, because if you attack it, you can hurt, really, really hurt near the top. Quite glad i do not live on the street i will do the weather at a a5 degrees angle sunny and frosty in the south but Northern Areas, different story with temperatures at plus 7 degrees in glasgow. Today, after that frosty start, the sunshine across the south, but Northern Areas more cloudy where that milder areas. In glasgow this morning, it was seven celsius. This is the south coast from cornwall to devon in the bristol to kent. Nice weather here is. Crisp and chilly, 6 degrees. Further north, skies turn cloudy and some rain out of those thick clouds. Most of it in the north. And a bit male. Com winds quite strong, freshening across these North Eastern coasts a bit mild and winds quite strong. Quite brisk winds here. This is mild air out of the north west, relatively mild air. For many, this coming night, so wednesday morning, it will not be as frosty, so none of these blue boxes. Tiny pockets of frost in all areas but for towns and cities, it should be frost free stomach tomorrow starts cloudy across southern areas and maybe some rain, very light. And you can see the sky is clear and a mostly sunny day but quite windy, especially cross the north sea coast, with one or two showers in the norfolk. Carried on that breeze. During wednesday night and into thursday, an area of High Pressure on top of the uk which equals clear skies. Thursday morning is very nippy with temperatures in scotla nd is very nippy with temperatures in scotland down to minus nine degrees. Police have shot a man dead during what theyre describing as a pre planned operation to stop a car on the m62 In Huddersfield. They say its not connected with terrorism. A second car was also stopped in bradford. West Yorkshire Police say the operation was pre planned Atjunction 2a near ainley top, and that five people in all have been arrested. The independent Police Complaints commission has sent investigators to the scene, which you can see here live behind me. Thats the ski with the Green Screens shielding the area where it happened. That is the area there with the Green Screens. Its the area there with the Green Screens. Fifth Fatal Police Shooting in england and wales within nine months. We can see the scene behind you. What is going on there now . Well, ben, in the last hour or so, we have seen much more Police Activity here at the scene, behind those Green Screens, which the police erected this morning on the carriageway to the slip road of the m62 westbound exit. They were the cars involved in the incident at 6. 00pm in which a man was fatally shot by police. Now, those vehicles involved, one is a white audi. There are pictures of the white Audi Wits Bonnet Gouged by bullet mark its, with its and indeed three bullet marks on its windscreen. That gives you an indication of what happened here last night. Thats surrounded by two dark vehicles. We believe those to be Police Vehicles and a silver Mercedes E Class vehicle. So, this stop and this is what the police must have done last night, they say this was a preplanned operation, ben, so they were obviously following or watching this particular movement of vehicles, specifically with the purpose in mind. They stopped it on the outskirts of huddersfield at 6. 00pm, there followed the firearms discharge and the man subsequently died. Now the road has been sealed off since 6 0clockpm last night and the police say it is likely to remain that case, possibly, until 6. 00pm this evening, so major knock ones for traffic in the area as well. We know that five people have now been arrested, three here at the scene last night and also two more in bradford. So, phil, we dont know what was the reason for this Police Operation but they are saying it wasnt related to terrorism . Thats right. This investigation has been taken over now by The Independent Police Complaints commission, thats an Automatic Referral when somebody is shot at by police. What they are saying is that it isa police. What they are saying is that it is a preplanned operation. 0ther than that, they are keeping their cards very close to their chest at the moment. But, nonetheless, its a very serious situation. The ipcc are taking quite a bit of time to carry out this investigation into what happened here. So we dont know any more details at the moment. We were hoping for more information are from the police but we have seen the Police Helicopter up. This morning there has been quite a bit of media attention, as you would imagine on such an incident like this. Tha nkfully such an incident like this. Thankfully these incidents are relatively rare. In england and wales alone in the last decade there have only been 22 Fatal Police Shootings. Phil, thank you very much. Kurdish militants say a british man has been killed fighting with them against Islamic State militants in syria. They say ryan lock, who was 20 and from west sussex, died during an assault on the is stronghold of raqqa just before christmas. Its believed he travelled to syria last august, and joined a Kurdish Volunteer group known as the ypg. In a statement, his Fatherjohn Lock said 0ur Correspondent Emma Vardy is in southampton and is following the story for us. What more do we know about this young man . Well, ryan lock went to school in halfa nt. Young man . Well, ryan lock went to school in halfant. His family are from Havant School in halfant. His family are from hava nt and school in halfant. His family are from havant and chichester. We understand he worked aes a chef in the uk before Travelling To Syria to fight. We understand he travelled out in august. In fact he told Friends And Family he was going on holiday to turkey. But, indeed, later on he then revealed on facebook he was actually going to join up with the Kurdish Group own as the ypg. Now, he is not the first british man to do this. 0thers as the ypg. Now, he is not the first british man to do this. Others have done the same. Ryan lock, we understand, the ypg informed his family ina understand, the ypg informed his family in a letter, of his death, saying he was killed in that battle for the syrian city of raqqa, which has been an is stronghold. And obviously shock from his Friends And Family. We read out that statement from his father. His school have put out a statement as well, i think. Thats right. His school have said today that he was a well liked pupil. I have also spoken to two other fighters who had pupil. I have also spoken to two otherfighters who had met him out in syria, who say that he was very committed to the kurdish cause and actually asked himself to go and fight on the front line. It is difficult perhaps for people to understand why somebody might go and get involved in a foreign war but people do feel inspired by the kurdish struggle againstist Islamic State and we often see every day picture of Terror Attacks carried out in the name offist Islamic State and this group, ypg, do allow british volu nteers this group, ypg, do allow british volunteers to come and fight with them, despite having no Military Training prior to Travelling To Syria. It is important to point out that the British Government warn strongly of people Travelling To Syria. The British Government saying, for people Travelling To Syria, whichever side they might be fighting on, they could be breaking British Terror Laws but the kurdish community, they will see it differently, they will see ryan lock and others like him, as martyrs. Thank you emma vardy reporting from southampton. Meanwhile, several syrian rebel groups say theyve suspended discussions for a planned Peace Conference in kazakhstan later this month. They say its because of Syrian Government ceasefire violations. A british based Monitoring Group says syrian warplanes have been carrying out more aid raids on districts near damascus. The Ministry Of Defence says a british soldier has died in iraq. The soldier, from the 2nd Battalion the duke of lancasters regiment, died near baghdad, following an incident which is now being investigated. The regiment is training iraqi and Kurdish Security forces. The death wasnt the result of enemy activity. The soldiers family has been informed. Turkish police have launched raids across istanbul and arrested a dozen people in a bid to hunt down the man they believe is responsible for the new years eve Nightclub Attack. Its believed that the turkish authorities do know the identity of the man and kyrgyzstan is looking into reports that the suspect is one of its citizens. And it is believed, actually, that the Police Forces have identified who this man is but no information has been revealed about the identity of the attacker. It is believed that he is from a Central Asian country. Turkish reports suggest that he came to Turkey In November Last year. Some reports suggest he made an entry into turkey, later on, in december. But he came with his wife and two children, the reports suggest, in order not to attract attention. We are hearing from Reuters News Agency quoting the ncv Television Station in turkey, that two foreign nationals have been detained at istanbuls ata Turks Rk Airport over the attack. So two foreign nationals detained over the attack at the airport, thats ncv there being quoted by reuters. Police in Greater Manchester have been given more time to question four men over a hit and run that killed two girls. 12 year old Helina Kotlarova seen on the left died at the scene in 0ldham on new years eve. Protests are taking place at Railway Stations across the country, in response to yesterdays average Fare Increase of 2. 3 . Protests are in london, birmingham, manchester. Theyve been organised by the action for rail group, which wants Rail Services to be returned to public ownership. 0ur correspondent, daniel boettcher, is at Kings Cross Station in Central London for us. There was protests here this morning, about 30 to a0 people, as you say also protests in a number of other cities and other stations. It was about this rise in railfare, an average of 2. 3 and for the regulated fares, which include most Season Tickets on commuter routes, the increase was 1. 9 . That was based on last julys the increase was 1. 9 . That was based on lastjulys Rpi Inflation figure. Now, these increases apply to england, scotland and wales, not to england, scotland and wales, not to Northern Ireland, Transinglink Which runs services in Northern Ireland, they say no decision has taken on Fares Revision for 2017 at this stage. Translink. We spoke to commuters at kings cross as they made their way to work about the fa re made their way to work about the Fare Increases. The Fare Increase will affect me quite a bit. It is over £7,000 will affect me quite a bit. It is over£7,000 a yearto will affect me quite a bit. It is over £7,000 a year to commute from peterborough down to london. So, yeah, it does, it affects me quite ha rd yeah, it does, it affects me quite hard in the pocket. But it is something that ive got to do. travel in from huntington every day. So, it is the commute for me, itll bea so, it is the commute for me, itll be a huge hike in the amount of pay. I get be a huge hike in the amount of pay. Igetan be a huge hike in the amount of pay. I get an annual ticket now. Itll make a huge difference in my outgoings on a monthly basis as well as annually basis, yes. Yes, i commute from zone 5 every day. And when the mayor has decided to freeze the fares on the underground for four years, i think it makes more sense to freeze the fare on the tfl other franchises inside london as well. It is probably more fair for the other londoners. So, southern people may more compared to the northern end just because they use the underground and they use the rail franchise. Now the Campaign Group action for rail looks at one example where it says a monthly Season Ticket from luton to london costs £378, which it saysis luton to london costs £378, which it says is 1a of average monthly earnings, compares it to a similar route in germany where it is 3 or france where it is 2 of average earnings. The Rail Delivery Group which represents Train Operating Companies says 97 p in every pound paid by passengers goes into running and improving services and the government says it is delivering what it calls the biggest Rail Modernisation Programme for more than a century. 0ur than a century. For the first time in a decade, the Trump Administration will be able to rely on a republican majority in both the House Of Representatives and the senate. Therell be a packed schedule in congress here are a few areas under contention 0n the agenda is the repeal of the Health Care Law, better own as 0bama ca Re Health Care law, better own as 0bama care but republicans are split on which parts of the law to repeal and more complicated, theyll have to come up with a bill to replace 0bama care. The republicans want to repeal regulations and executive orders, rules that did not require congressional approval. Many deal with Climate Change, such as the clea n with Climate Change, such as the Clean Power Plan to cut Carbon Pollution from coal fired power plants. Congress will also have to approve cabinet. Democrats are promising a grilling of the nominees but ultimately, its promising a grilling of the nominees but ultimately, its expected the republican majority will ensure their confirmation. And the republicans who blocked president 0bamas nominee for the Supreme Court for the past 11 months will now have a chance to nominate their own candidate. Final lane co ntroversially own candidate. Final lane controversially there is the republican push to dismantle the 0ffice republican push to dismantle the office of Congressional Et Yivenlingts The Independent Ethics Watchdog was set up in 2008 to investigate allegations of corruption or misconducted by lawmakers. The republicans want a new body that wont be able to receive Anonymous Tips or make its findings public. Molly hooper is capitol Hill Reporter with the hill. How much of president 0bamas programme do you think congress will roll back in the coming years . You mean for 0bamacare . Well 0bamacare and regulation. It is hard to say because the president implemented 0bama care which has become the Law Of The Land and as a Health Care Law it is going to be very difficult to untangle all of the interworkings of this. So republicans have going to be moving in the next few days here, when they get back into session, to set up the situation, a scenario in which President Elect trump, once he is inaugurated, can start to move on repeeling most parts of the 0bamacare Repeeling most parts of the 0bamaca Re Law with repeeling most parts of the 0bamacare law with the exception of the preexisting conditions and sort of those pieces of the 0bamacare law that americans really, really are liking. But, it will be difficult because they dont necessarily have a measure to replace it and, so, even though they might make these changes, you know, legislatively and in law, they wont take effect, necessarily, until after the next election. 0k, and quite often we see president s and congress in the hands of different parties, now the same party but having said, that President Elect trump has quite a few enemies amongst the republicans in congress. Is he going to have an easy ride there, do you think, or not . It is hard to say, because, you know donald trump, remember, he was a democrat once, back in the day. And it seems like some of the policies that hes espoused find a more comfortable home with democratic party. So it will be interesting to see how well he does with members of his own party. In addition to the fact that keep in mind, during the primary, not a lot of republicans came out and officially endorsed donald trump and even after he won the primary and became the republican nominee, not a lot of lawmakers up on capitol hill officially endorsed donald trump. So there wont be a lot of love lost among members of congress, of his own party. If they vote against they dont necessarily feel the type of, you know, connection that they normally would with a member of their own party being in the white house. And finally, let me just ask you, we are getting more of Donald Trumps nominees for office in his administration, we have just trumps nominees for office in his administration, we havejust been hearing he has named Robert Lighthiezer as his us Trade Representative according to the Trump Transition Team . Can you shed any light on that, excuse the pun . Any light i would shed would be dim i dont know a lot about him but i know trade will be a huge part of the Donald Trumps agenda. He said on day1 he wanted to renegotiate and a half da, the north American Free trade agreement renegotiate nafda. So that position will be key for the Trump Administration going forward. Thank you very much for being with us. Hundreds of people have been forced to leave their homes due to forest fires threatening parts of coastal chile. With me now from the uk Music Labels Association bpi, which is behind the report, is gennaro castaldo. Thank you for being with us. Lets talk about vinyl first of all, lps. I sold mine a few years ago. A big mistake. Might be worth a few pounds. Only got a couple of hundred for them and i had hundreds. They are very for them and i had hundreds. They are very popular. I think the low point was 2007 when they dipped to 200,000 sales. The candle flame was flickering, didnt quite go out. Then you had events like Record Store Day which has popularised vinyl, and celebrates it. Retailers giving more space and supermarkets stocking, and hmv giving more space but The Independenty stores are the backbone, they were grabbing vinyl looking for a reason to stay in the high street and key, is that a younger dome graphic, the so called millennials, the younger generallation, although they use streaming, they appreciate vinyl, so when they love a particular album or artist they want to go out and own it, collect it or gift it and artists love to release in it. For them, i think it is the best expression of their music. And also you get the artwork and pictures and so much more thanjust you get the artwork and pictures and so much more than just the you get the artwork and pictures and so much more thanjust the music. The cover work, the sleeve notes, even the smell, it is more of an experience. It is far more immersive, you have to put it on the record player and flip it over. Streaming is growing, it is massively convenient, listen any time, play any time you want. More than 50 million tracks available so opened up a whole world of music and counter intuitively, it seems to have permitted a new relationship with physical. When digital downloads were on the aacceptedcy you had to pay for though, you either bought that or the physical, unlikely you would buy both. Stream Something Like access, it leaves you room to gout and buy the vinyl. You mentioned cds decline but it is still resilient and combined with vinyl still accounts for a1 of overall sales. Labels have invested hugely in the aists and formats of Digital Services and retailers, so it isa Digital Services and retailers, so it is a good place we are in. You say a good place. Generally music sales, just on the up, is that right . The last few years we have seen an increase. 0bviously right . The last few years we have seen an increase. Obviously there was a decline for a period, as we we re was a decline for a period, as we were adjusting to the dick tal revolution. They were the first the digital revolution. We were the first industry to go through that. The exciting front years now are about exciting reality and Artificial Intelligence in terms of how they can enhance the Listening Experience still further. Great to hear about it, long may it continue. Thank you for being with us. Now the weather with darren bett. Aa now the weather with darren bett. A a change in the weather today. More cloud around. A lot is fairly thin especially across Eastern Scotla nd thin especially across Eastern Scotland north east england. Best of the sunshine in southern counties of england and south wales. The headlines at 12 30 the Police Watchdog is investigating after a man was shot and killed by officers in West Yorkshire yesterday evening. The incident happened when Police Stopped a carjust off the m62 near huddersfield during a planned operation. Kurdish activists say a man from west sussex has died while fighting Islamic State militants in syria. Ryan lock, who was 20 and from chichester, had joined the ypg kurdish militia. According to a turkish broadcaster, Turkish Police detained two foreign nationals at istanbuls main Ataturk Airport in connection with the attack at a nightclub which killed 39 people on new years day. And a think tank closely linked with labour says the party is too weak to win a majority, and would need to work with rivals like the Liberal Democrats to stand any chance of getting into government. A man has died after a car was struck by a train at a Level Crossing in lidlington, in bedfordshire. Brexit will inevitably be top of the political agenda for much of 2017, as the government prepares to trigger the formal six months after the vote that came as a surprise to many. But in Great Yarmouth, in norfolk, the result was never in doubt. The town delivered the fifth highest leave vote, with more than 70 of residents voting out. Michael cowan has been to Great Yarmouth to find out how people feel about the vote now. We first came here six months ago, our country had just voted to leave the eu and it was some. But are people here still excited about brexit and what is more important to them . Is it access to the Single Market which involves much the same as we have got now, we pay into the eu into and change we get to trade with them but we have the except freedom of movement, that means unlimited numbers of workers coming to work. Is it less, complete control of our borders, because the only certainty we have here is that we cannot have both . Does it concern you when you hear things about the economy so for example, going on holiday always already costs more money . And why not holiday in britain . Theyre money . And why not holiday in britain . They re Beautiful Money . And why not holiday in britain . Theyre beautiful holiday destinations, this is of them. The people were putting more money into our own economy rather than feeding everybody elses, this country would thrive. Do you still feel excited about brexit . Absolutely, it was the best thing we could have done, joining the eu was the worst Decision Britain ever made. Do we Wa Nt A Ccess Decision Britain ever made. Do we want access to the Single Market or do we want complete control of our borders . Because it is one or the other, we cannot have both. borders . Because it is one or the other, we cannot have both. I think we have got enough here. Our Housing Situation is atrocious. You know, Andl Situation is atrocious. You know, and i understand that they do need to go somewhere and there are places at stake and i agree with that, but when is it going to stop . Are we are going to be intense next . You voted weve . I going to be intense next . You voted weve . I voted going to be intense next . You voted weve . I voted leave because i went with the flow. If there was another referendum tomorrow . with the flow. If there was another referendum tomorrow . I could possibly change my mind, definitely, hands up to that one. So that is more important to you, even if it comes at the cost of the economy, controlling the borders is the most important thing . That is most important thing . That is most important for me, yes. Do Think Parliament should have a vote on brexit . Yes, without a doubt they should do. I think they should get backin should do. I think they should get back in arguing and listen to each other. And they might get somewhere. 5a people went for this, complete conviction like they had six months ago to control our borders. 2a people went for Single Market access. We a re people went for Single Market access. We are not pollsters and our brexit boards are not scientific, but they clearly suggest for people here immigration and control of our borders is still the major concern. But amongst those we spoke to, there isa waning but amongst those we spoke to, there is a waning support for the way in which the government is handling brexit, namely the lack of information, and it is telling that while the vast majority stand by that decision to leave, people here wa nt that decision to leave, people here want more input, or even another vote, and the exact terms of how we leave the European Union. This could become a reality when the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court, returns its decision later this month on whether mps should have a vote on triggering article 50 or not. It is not the new year message many labour mps wanted to begin 2017 with, and melancholy warning from the Fabian Society that labours two week to win and it is too strong to die. This analysis written by the general secretary of the Fabian Society, drawing parallels with the labour party in the uk and the democrats in the united states. Labour are in a very similar position to Hillary Clinton in the united states. They could win more votes than the conservatives, but go on to lose the election, in terms of how many mps they get. Its very hard for them to get a majority of mps because the Scottish Nationalist Party has won almost all seats in scotland. So, labour will be in the position of being very, very unlikely to win a majority, but far more likely to be in a position to form a partnership with other Political Parties and perhaps form a minority government, if they make some progress. Lets unpick the reports findings with the shadow minister andrew green. Thank you very much. A dire warning that the party would need to work with the Liberal Democrats or the snp in order to have any chance of getting into power we are in National Party and in elections, we absolutely give people the opportunity to vote for us, i do not wa nt to opportunity to vote for us, i do not want to talk about coalitions this side of a General Election. It is up to the people to decide what government they want. We have just come out of a tricky 18 months from the General Election defeat in 2015, two Leadership Elections and the referendum. And of course, that has left the party in a state whereby we need to look at our policies, we need to look at our policies, we need to look at our policies, we need to look at what the future should be. We are in a new year and looking forward, i think that we have got the challenge to put together a Policy Platform that people out there can support on defending the nhs, on protecting workers rights and getting the best out of brexit for people up and down the united kingdom. And that is the challenge for the labour party, to reconnect. And labour mps id talk to rock for that challenge. You might be up for that challenge and it has been a difficult 18 months, but the reality of this report is how difficult it will be mathematically because of our electoral system, and also because of the many problems labour faces including brexit. Do you concede a message on that is still muffled and inconsistent . We do not know what the garments message on brexit is and that is the challenge for all Political Parties the governments. But you need to sort out your message. We need to construct out your message. We need to Co Nstru Ct We Out your message. We need to construct we hold the government to account and we cannot do that until we know what the government is offering in terms of our relationship with the European Union going forward. We absolutely have a challenge, i do not dispute that, but i am up for that challenge, and labourmps, but i am up for that challenge, and labour mps, because that millions of people across this country desperate for a change of government and for positive and progressive politics. And thats desperately need a labour government. It is incumbent on everybody in the labour party from the labour party leader, and even activists, to make sure we fight to win the next election. Thank you very much. We parked the Fabian Society analysis to Jeremy Corbyns office. They said he was the only genuine alternative to what they called a failed political establishment. Thank you very much indeed. It was one of the bloodiest battles during world war one, with 325,000 allied troops and 260,000d german soldiers killed in three months. To honour those who died there, and to mark the 100th anniversary of passchendaele, two events will be held in ypres injuly. 0ur correspondent, robert hall, is there. My wound was slight and i was hobbling back and then a shell burst, slick upon the dartboards, slick upon the duckboards, so i fell into the Bottomless Mud and lost the light. There was not a sign of life of any sort. Not a bird, not even a rat, or a blade of grass. The words of those who tried to sum up the hell of paschendaele. Three months, when more than half a million men died. Three months when the allied army fought an enemy, the mud and the cold, to gain a few miles of ground. A century ago, ypres was under siege. The roads leading north climbed steadily to the german lines, which overlooked the allies on three sides. After the war, the british made this sanitised documentary about the battle. Tales of personal heroism to distract from the ghastly reality. The reality of uphill advances, a sucking quagmire, and the horrors of machineguns and gas. This years commemorations will be focussed in ypres a city rebuilt from total destruction. There will be a series of events built around remembrance and the need to help visitors understand what happened here. The commemorative events will take place over two days. It will start with the traditional last post ceremony at the menin gate, followed by commemorative events in the Market Square the following day. Last post sounds. On a freezing night under the menin gate, the bugles sound for the fallen once again. Paschendaele is burnt into ypress turbulent history. Paschendaele is the loss of a lot of lives for us. A lot of people that we commemorate day after day, and we want to continue the message that the last post has not forgotten. This summers commemorations will be a partnership with a city whose people have never forgotten. Ijust felt like i was in this big world, that nobody was taking notice that i existed, and i needed to use a toilet. We are talking about a basic need, basic right that a human being deserves. And i dont think this should be happening in this century. So when did you decide that you wanted to actually start to talk about it publicly . When it first happened to me, i couldnt even look at myself in the mirror because i was so embarrassed that i had actually wet myself. And one day, i woke up, i looked at myself in the mirror and i said. I just realised that i am not the only one who is experiencing this. I know so many other people with disabilities going through different and very difficult issues, and i said to myself, well, ive got to speak. And im just hoping that by me coming public, its going to end all these things we go on about, self censorship, and we should just realise that when bad things are happening to us, we need to have a voice, we need to speak. Because when that was going on on the train, when i wet myself, i didnt have a voice. It was all taken away from me. And ifeel that i now have a voice to speak against it, because i should notjust sit and lie in the bed and want to have dignity, when it was all taken away during that incident, and allow other people to suffer the same. Stay with us, i want to bring in sue bott, from disabled rights uk, what do you think about this . Im just appalled. I think youre a very brave woman, anne, for coming out and explaining what happened to you. And i really hope that you doing that has a lot of good. Im sure this has happened to disabled people in the past, but they havent felt confident, or been able to come and speak publicly about it. Unfortunately, i think that we still have a kind of Tick Box Mentality towards disability and access. So we tick the box that the toilet is there, on the train, we dont think about how we need to consider that its working all the time. There has been a Brief Statement from crosscountry trains saying that what happened to anne is completely unacceptable and they are investigating. They said the circumstances of the journey were unacceptable. Its the first time they have been aware of such a situation happening on one of their trains. They say. Anne wafula strike, mbe. Donald trump has dismissed a claim by north korea it is developing missiles capable of striking america. In a tweet, donald trump highlighted that the preparations for a Missile Launch had reached the final stage. He says he is adamant that that will not happen but it is not clear he is expressing doubts about north Koreas Nuclear capabilities or planning preventative action. It is those words, it wont happen, from the president firstly, there is a political consequence because if it does happen within the four year term, no doubt the democrats will say, you said it will not happen, but it has. And more importantly, how is he going to prevent it happening . There are options, you would imagine, one might be he does not think the regime is going to survive or he does not think the technological ability is there to deliver on the threat. 0r technological ability is there to deliver on the threat. Or he could be thinking, i am going to sit down with kim jong un, as be thinking, i am going to sit down with kimjong un, as he promised before the election, over a burger and persuade him to renounce the Nuclear Ambition. 0r, and persuade him to renounce the Nuclear Ambition. Or, and and persuade him to renounce the nuclearambition. Or, and this and persuade him to renounce the Nuclear Ambition. Or, and this is certainly a prominent in variance in these parts, he is saying, we will prevent it happening if it looks likely. Steve evans in south korea. Children in england are eating half their recommended daily sugar intake before they even get to school thats the warning from health officials. Public Health England say sugary cereals, juices and spreads are to blame and, at a time of spiralling obesity levels, they have launched a campaign to help us better understand what our children are eating. Baldwin street, In The City Of Dunedin on new zealands south island, is officially the worlds steepest residential road. At its steepest, the slope has a gradient of 35 . Its a road that must strike fear into anyone delivering post or newspapers, let alone anyone on a pushbike. At the height of 30 up and 30 down every day, whether it was raining or snowing or whatever, until my knees packed up. Now i do it backwards, just to keep my legs in shape. Captain baldwin, he was apparently involved in a newspaper here in dunedin at one stage. He was involved with the gold discovery. I caught some of them standing on our outdoor furniture, on the table, to try and get a better shot of mount cargill. Someone was learning to drive and came up Baldwin Street, got the accelerator and brake mixed up and ended up halfway up the bend. Weve had to do some medical assistance as well. Im Brendan Thompson and im the Community Constable for north dunedin. This street does tend to attract Thrill Seekers and there was an unfortunate incident some years ago where there was a fatality. Two people got themselves into a wheelie bin. Unfortunately, one of them died when they collided with a trailer. We will get people challenging themselves with skateboarding, riding down on bicycles, which is obviously quite dangerous. Treat it with respect, because if you attack it, you can hurt, really, really hurt near the top. I havent always made it up, especially on the wet days. Its always a good challenge. Weve climbed the steepest street in the world Baldwin Street, dunedin. What did Sir Edmund Hillary say . We knocked it off iam glad i am glad i do not live on that street in a moment, the news at one with reeta chakrbarti. First, the weather. A change in the weather today, still some sunshine to be found, as in wiltshire earlier. Into the north west of england, much cloudier and another picture here. More cloud around than we had yesterday, it is fairly thin except towards the north of scotland, where we find patchy light rain or drizzle. Wind is picking up further in the northern isles. Brighter towards the south east of scotland and showers cannot be ruled out for Northern Ireland, over the irish sea in the north west england and wales. Skies brighter to the pennines and east anglia, the best sunshine on the south coast and South West England and south wales. Temperatures falling away quickly this evening before cloud arrives from the north and showery bursts of rain and stronger winds around the north sea coasts. Not as cold as last night, the south west corner of england and scotland and north east england, the cloud is tenuous and temperatures not far from freezing. A weather front on wednesday which is weak and running into High Pressure, and on it and ahead of it, we have got more cloud and maybe drizzly showers, and behind it, as it moves toward the south west, we find clearer skies more sunshine, and strong winds along the north sea coast so it feels cold with the chance of a shower. Many places dry and sunny in the afternoon and getting colder. Clear skies and light winds, a recipe for a frosty start on thursday, especially in mind, with widespread frost. Not as cold for Northern Ireland and south west with more cloud, not as cold along the north sea coast with a stronger wind. 6 also and it could be cold a. Mist and fog patches in the west country and scotland, but many places have a dry and cold and sunny day on thursday, more cloud to the west especially in Northern Ireland. A change toward the end of the week, but this weather front from the atlantic bringing cloud, outbreaks of rain and it will lift the temperatures, goodbye.
