He wields conans sword and historical allegory with unmatched skill. What Arnold Schwarzenegger, the terminator, had to say about the chaos of the past few days. Hello, im katty kay in washington. Christian fraser is in london. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. That famous phrase could be true for politics as well and, in particular, the presidency of donald trump because less than 12 months after the senate cleared him of wrongdoing after his first impeachment, the us house of representatives is poised to impeach him a second time. It has never happened before to any us president. The single impeachment article points to trumps repeated false claims that he won the election and his speech to the crowd on january the 6th. In all this, it says, President Trump gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions of government. The house vote on impeachment could come on wednesday. Republicans blocked a separate bill which called on the Vice President to remove trump under the 25th amendment. The more we learn of the attack on the capitol, the more shocking it becomes. Democrats are furious and aware things could have been far worse. There is evidence that some of those who found their way into the capitol were much more organized than initially thought, which is why Speaker Pelosi is so determined there should be retribution. Staff went under the table, barricaded the door, turned out the lights and were silent, in the dark, under the table for two and a half hours. But some republicans say unity for the country is more important than holding the president to account. They are walking a thin line. Stick with trump or cut and run. Also feeling the pressure americas various Security Services who allowed this to happen. Where were the National Guard troops when they were needed . Heroes like Eugene Goodman stood alone, deliberately distracting rioters to draw them away from the chamber where senators were hiding. Compare that officer to those trying to put some distance between themselves and the white house. Corporate america is making its position known with its pocketbook. Several businesses have decided they will no longer fund those republicans who disputed the result of the election. There is a lot still moving in this story and a lot to cover, so lets bring in our north america editorjon sopel. We will bring you in as soon as we get him. Christian, when you see what happened over the last few days, and the question here about accountability and keeping the country together is very much on democratic and republican lines, and what democrats are saying is that when you listen to what republicans said before the assault on the capital, it was clear that there was incitement from people around donald trump. Takea incitement from people around donald trump. Take a quick listen. We will not go quietly into the night. Trial by combat we need to march on the capital today. youre going to be the zero and not the hero, were coming for you and were going to have a good time doing it. Walked down to the capital. Were going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and were probably not going to cheer so much for some of them, because youll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong. It is those comments that have led to todays impeachment articles. Were joined now by republican strategist bryan la nza, the former Deputy Communications director on trumps 2016 campaign. Im assuming youre not that surprised that democrats are moving to try to impeach President Trump, given that mike pence, the right president , has made it pretty clear that he doesnt want to invoke the 25th amendment the Vice President. Yeah, the democrats have been talking about impeaching President Trump for four years. At this point, they know how to do it and they know how to do it faster. That may be a good thing or a dangerous thing. You cant expect due process on american president for this matter. It shows the craziness that we find our democracy right now, whatever extreme position you want, now seems to be carrying the line. Everything is very tense at the moment in washington and around the country. You are somebody, this is why i want to speak to you, you speak to President Trump ona speak to you, you speak to President Trump on a regular basis. Whats his mood at the moment . trump on a regular basis. Whats his mood at the moment . I think last week before the events, he felt pretty confident that he was going to have more senator support. I hear from friends who have worked with the administration that hes in a pretty dark place, that he feels a lot of people have targeted the Coverage Extremely unfairly. Hes in a very dark place, hes very lonely. Thats the feeling that im hearing from people who are left talking to him daily. Lindsey graham said today that hed spent four hours on the white house on friday trying to get the president to focus on these final few days on these policy agendas, echoing a little bit what youre saying. Who is around the president . Who is still trying to cajole him, trying to get him to concentrate on what matters . You still have mark meadows, the deputy chief of staff. You have jared and eve anke, they still play a pretty large voice jared and ivanka. The president is in a dark place, and i think the election absorbs his focus and now more than ever, the reaction has absolutely consumed his focus. wa nt to has absolutely consumed his focus. want to talk to you about team pence, because by all accounts, i dont think they spoken to President Trump since monday last week. Just have a listen to the senator from nebraska about what he saw on wednesday regarding the Vice President. We were in the Senate Chamberand the president. We were in the Senate Chamber and the secret service had to rush in and grab the Vice President from and rush him out, and the president was rage tweeting at the president was rage tweeting at the same time. I think its obvious that the president wasnt merely reckless and destructive, it was a frequent dereliction of his duty to defend the compass constitution. When you hear that, you understand why there is no love lost any more the constitution. Given that the Vice President was such a loyal foot soldier. Do you get the sense that mike pence is almost holding the 25th amendment above the president s head this week . I would say senator is right, the behaviour towards the Vice President is shocking. Ive spoken to members to his team, and they were of the opinion that there was an assassination attempt on the Vice President. That is unfathomable to think of, but thats what the staff said. Secret Service Operated in the fact, theres going to be an assassination attempt. We were lucky to have the Vice President they are to have the Vice President they are to keep things together in the final days. Were nine days away from a very chaotic time, and i have full confidence in the Vice President. Whether its to talk to the president directly and say you cant do these things, were very lucky that we do have the Vice President there at this particular time. By all accounts, the president is now surrounded by very small groups of people who have, over the past few weeks, unable his opinion that he won the election and that it was stolen from him. If more republicans who he has had a relationship with had said to him since november, you lost the election, you have to concede, could the events of last wednesday have been avoided . Yes. Even now you dont have House Republicans who are acknowledging the fact that the president lost. Were talking about impeachment, and that lets Republican House members off the hook. Lets validate the fa ct off the hook. Lets validate the fact that we had a fair and fury election and the Vice President won, and there was no interference. Then you actually put up republicans on the record, even after everything that took place, youre still going to get people that cant acknowledge that. Those people need to be dealt with appropriately. Can ijust finally ask you about the politics within the Republican House caucus at the moment . 0n the one side, theyre saying they need unity, but two thirds of that caucus voted to withhold the election result to stop the election result. How can you argue. Its a very tight line to walk. Do you get a feeling they dont really know which way theyre going to come down on . Nobody really does, thats the dirty secret everyone talks about. The system is designed to have conflict with itself. Every once in a while, somebody gets to speak about unity and may be the media falls in love briefly, but this is billed on conflict and its going to remain for a very long time. The most honest thing you will hear on this programme tonight. Laughter from a man who knows. Thanks for coming on the programme. 0ne one of the and available images was a man dangling from the side of the senate. He came to symbolise the lawlessness and chaos of the moment. Jon sopel caught up with that man. Just a normal man from boise idaho. Drove out here. Its really important that now more than a there are some bad actors and bad players in our country. Were coming together as a people and standing up for our freedom and rights. We dont wa nt for our freedom and rights. We dont want violence, but were ready for it if they. Its more about keeping other people say. Theres a lot of older people here showing their support. Were here to support. If violence happens, it happens, but were not going to start it. Just a normal. John joins us now. Whats happened . Remarkably smiley and happy as if he was going on a jolly outing. Do you know what happened to him since . Hes now full of remorse and saying hes embarrassed his country and his family. He got caught up in the moment, shouldnt have done this, during me. But you saw the way he was dressed. What attracted me, dearie me. That area where donald trump addressed the crowd, here he is dressed as robocop, and you think thats interesting. Thats unusual way to dress at a protest. His mate was wearing a facemask as well, with protective kevlar on it. They were there, ready for whatever action involved. He said he was there, wasnt going to start any trouble, but if trouble started, he would be ready, thats why they were dressed as they were. Clearly, he was one of the early people to go up to congress and managed to get in to the floor of the senate, and was dangling from that balcony before he jumped down into the senate. Embarrassed now, but just jumped down into the senate. Embarrassed now, butjust one of those people who. What i dont know is whether this was premeditated, whether he was part of the group that was under orders because there didnt seem to be coordination as well. Im sure a lot of people were caught up in the moment. Im sure a lot of people we nt moment. Im sure a lot of people went up to capitol hill because donald trump told them to. And they needed to show strength and not weakness and cheer on the senators doing the right thing. Thats all donald trump said. There were some that i think were there that had this planned out. Remorse from him because hes been caught in his family embarrassed by what he did, but according to an fbi bulletin, that threat persists. Theyre very worried about it. Theyre saying armed protester being land at all 50 state capitals from the 16th of january through at least the 20th of january, and the us capital. There is an intelligent they are that the threat persists. I think ive just seena threat persists. I think ive just seen a statement from the acting head of Homeland Security saying emergency provisions for a major event are being brought forward from the 19th of january event are being brought forward from the 19th ofjanuary to the 13th of january the 30th ofjanuary. I think washington, dc will not see any repeat of what happened, because it will be in town. There will be military in every street corner. You will be able to move. What about in the 50 other states where they can deploy the same resources . It looks as though youll have to have a huge, those states where people feel the election was stolen from donald trump, even though you have to keep underlining again and again that if note evident there is no evidence there was fraud. It doesnt dissipate the day that donald trump leaves the white house. Jon, thank you. We will be right back. The government has published its plan to immunise tens of Million People by spring. The Prime Minister borisjohnson has people by spring. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been people by spring. The Prime Minister borisjohnson has been explaining the urgency. Its a race against time. We can all see the threat that our nhs faces and the pressure is under, the demand in its extensive ca re under, the demand in its extensive care units, the pressure on ventilated beds, even the shortage of oxyg e n ventilated beds, even the shortage of oxygen in some places. These mass immunise asian centres will be open until eight from eight to eight immunisation centres. The aim is to offer a first dose of covid vaccines to up to 15 Million People by mid february. Thats all over 70s, front line health and social ca re 70s, front line health and social care workers, plus people who are currently shielding. The period of a president ial transition is by nature a precarious one. 0ne leader has a clock ticking, while the other doesnt yet have any power. For the international community, its when america could potentially look its weakest. History is full of transition crises, none worse perhaps than president lincolns. We talk about a divided nation, but when the poor guy came into office, seven states had just left the union. It ended in civil war. Fast forward to the 20th century, when carter handed off to reagan, january 81, the iran hostage situation was coming to a head. When reagan handed off to the elder bush, the cold war was ending. When bill clinton stepped aside for the younger bush, they had less time because of the florida recount. Security experts say that may have played a role in missing warning signs for 9 11. In such instances, it helps to have steady hands on deck. But trump is surrounded by acting cabinet secretaries acting secretary of defence chris miller, acting secretary of Homeland Security chad wolf, and others. Joining us now to discuss this is admiraljames stavridis, who served as nato supreme allied commander, among his many illustrious posts. Very admirable. Laughter let me talk to you about something i heard today from the house chair of the rules committee. He said today there is a clear and present danger to the country, and to the world. This president should be removed now. Do you agree . I do. Ithink that we have internal challenges and extreme passions raging in the country, and youve been covering them very well. But there is a big world beyond the border of the United States of america and our enemies move a pace. And high fives in beijing, in moscow, in its a window of a for mischief and were seeing it from the chinese cracking down on hong kong, rounding up more than their usual suspects. Were seeing russia and pose immense Cyber Attacks discovered in this period being followed by additional attacks. There is a great deal of mischief afoot, and as you correctly point out, were not on the a team or the b point out, were not on the a team orthe bteam, point out, were not on the a team or the b team, were point out, were not on the a team orthe b team, were barely on point out, were not on the a team or the b team, were barely on the c team with a bunch of acting officials. Its a dangerous period. Joe biden would prefer to look away from impeachment and focus on his administration and getting the first hundred days out of the way. An interesting nomination today was the man hes putting into the cia as the new chief, william burns, who has served five us president s. What unique about him as he comes entirely from a state department background. Why do you think he chose him . I know bill berms extremely well. Were contemporaries who Work Together bill burns. He isa who Work Together bill burns. He is a friend, so i disclose that, but i will tell you there is no finer choice for anyjob. I will tell you there is no finer choice for any job. But i will tell you there is no finer choice for anyjob. But i think this isa very choice for anyjob. But i think this is a very clever pic because it brings up someone who is not of Central Intelligence agency, but has immense reach and scope in that world as a consumer of intelligence. Dont forget he was our ambassador in moscow, in jordan. Dont forget he was our ambassador in moscow, injordan. Hes been at the very highest level of the state department. He knows the agency in intimate ways as a consumer. Marrying him up with the deputy, who is someone with very strong internal capabilities, i think youve got a winning pick there. You spoke about what americas adversaries might may thinking about whats happening, but i wonder if its also raising some disquiet amongst americas allies. Because they realise after what happened last week, joe biden is going to have his hands full. Hes got the coronavirus to deal with, hes got a tank economy to deal with, he had bad numbers we had bad numbers on friday. This attack on the capital is once again showing us on the capital is once again showing us the fault lines in american society, which some new president has to deal with. Allies hoping to see re engagement might take away from last week that this is a president whos going to be very busy with domestic issues. |j president whos going to be very busy with domestic issues. I think your analysis is correct, but ill tell you three things that i think are important to remember. 0ne tell you three things that i think are important to remember. One is i hope our allies will put it in perspective in the longer thrill of american history. You brought up the civil war. Immediately after the constitution, we had the rebellion. In 1876, we had another stolen election, which acquired at extralegal commission. I am old enough, i know youre not, im old enough, i know youre not, im old enough to rememberthe enough, i know youre not, im old enough to remember the 1970s, when we saw a real violence in american streets, bombs going off. We are a fractious nation in many way, and i can say this to a couple of brits, were still a very young nation. I would say this to our allies, put it in our perspective. Number two, recognised that in the end, the institutions held here, donald trump lost the house and the senate and the white house. Hell be impeached twice, hell continue to create difficulties for our nation. But the institutions have held. Number three, i think were a pretty good bet when we look at our capabilities, our resources. I would say to our allies, dont walk away just yet, were done yet not done yet. About my age and your optimism, thank you very much. Christian is never that diplomatic about my age. As donald trump disappeared from twitter this weekend, his arch nemesis Arnold Schwarzenegger was filling the void. In a video watched by millions, the terminator and former california governor compared the riot at the capitol to kristallnacht, the rampage in germany in 1938, in which nazi inspired mobs had burned synagogues and destroyed jewish owned shops. Sitting behind a president ial style desk, flanked by the american and californian flags, the sword of conan the barbarian on his desk, mr schwarzenegger related his experiences of growing up in austria after world war ii, and compared it to what he sees today in the United States. I grew igrew up i grew up in the rules of a country that suffered the loss of its democracy. I was born in 1947, two years after the second world war. Growing up, i was surrounded by broken men drinking away their guilt over the participation, the most evil regime in history. Not all of them were nazis. Manyjust went along, step by step down the road. They were the people next door. Ive never shared this so publicly because it is a painful memory, but my father would come home drunk once or twice a week, and he would scream and hit us and scare my mother. 0rdinary people who are all part of it. Including his father, and i think it was that personal story that made it so relatable what he said, as well of course as the steel sword of conan the barbarian. Watch the video, its worth it. Good evening. Last weeks bitter cold has been replaced for the start of this week with something a little milder. Quite a lot of cloud around today, as you can see by this weather watcher picture from cambridge, but those temperatures held up for many at around eight, nine, ten degrees. That said, we had some colder air into the far north east. It brought some snow and some rain into scotland, particularly out to the west. Now, this weather front here is the dividing line between that colder air pushing across from the north and moving that milder air further south. So, as we go through the night time, well have clearing skies across scotland and northern england. A blanket of cloud and rain sits across england and wales primarily, and here it will stay mild, 8 9 degrees. But with clearer skies, temperatures falling below freezing, icy stretches could be an issue first thing. There could also be a few wintry showers as well, but primarily dry with some sunshine through scotland, Northern Ireland and northern england. 0ur weather front continues to linger across the far south west, but here it will stay rather drab, but on the mild side. 10 11 degrees cant be ruled out. Further north, its a cool afternoon, 4 5 at the very best. Now, this contrast with the feel of the weather is set to continue through the middle of the week, and it will turn the weather story a little tricky because this triangle here is the dividing line between this milder air. Weve got this south westerly flow, and as that continues to bump into the cold air sitting across the eastern half of the uk, on the leading edge, well see some sleet and snow. Primarily to Higher Ground, but at this stage, we cant rule out that there could be some sleet and snow at lower levels. It will turn back readily to rain through the middle part of the afternoon as the milder air kicks in, but look how cold it is further north and east. And through the night, those temperatures are set to fall away again, so we could have a wintry mix through wednesday night into the early hours of thursday morning. Eventually we expect that milder story to take over, but its certainly worth keeping abreast of the forecast through wednesday and thursday, particularly across the north and east of the country. 0n the whole, thursday will turn milder and stay on the wet side. By friday, cloudy and cooler once again. Youre watching bbc news with me katty kay in washington, Christian Fraser is in london. Our top stories. The democrats have introduced a resolution in Congress Demanding that Vice President mike pence and the cabinet strip President Trump of his powers over the storming of the capitol. As big tech clamps down on President Trumps ability to speak to followers well look at how he will get his message out without social media. Also in the programme. The uk government sets out its plan to vaccinate the most vulnerable adults for coronavirus by mid february, all adults by the autumn. And from the scoreboard to the whiteboard we talk to sporting pundit gary lineker about his upcoming turn as the bbcs celebrity supply teacher. Dont underestimate how shaken members of congress have been by last weeks attack. Over the weekend theyve been learning more aboutjust how close they came to a much greater tragedy. Theyre furious, and they want answers and accountability. The Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote her colleagues a letter on sunday night. Today the democrats gave Vice President mike pence an ultimatum invoke the 25th amendment to remove President Donald Trump or democrats will proceed on wednesday with impeaching the president for an unprecedented second time. So lets speak to the democratic congresswoman madeleine dean. You were locked into a room on capitol hill, and i want to check on how you are doing and feeling . Thank you. It is good to be with you, im safe and well, but angry and determined. Are your republican collea g u es determined. Are your republican colleagues also angry at the pictures they saw from wednesday . dont know for certain but i certainly hope so. I had the chance to talk to a couple of republican colleagues when we were in the secure location and i said to them, what shame many of them had brought on themselves and on our country, and what shame of course, the disgraced the president has brought, and this was when we were in lockdown and we did not even have television to see the magnitude of this. There was a growing sense of theres something desperately wrong andl theres something desperately wrong and i hope over the course of the la st and i hope over the course of the last five days many of them recognise that this is an extraordinary cancer on american democracy and they must abide by the oath and either force the president to resign, impeach him, invoke the 25th amendment or all three. We are watching the pictures of some of the Police Officers being completely some of the offices being completely trashed, new images coming out all the time. When you look at the level of organisation that went into this, how do you account . We are hearing more stories about the warning on social media that these people were planning to do exactly what they did. How do you account now for the lack of security . It is stunning and i cant account for it but we are going to have a security briefing later this evening in our caucus. I certainly hope that we will learn more. I hope all of your colleagues are well. I was in the gallery at the time of the attack and much of the time of the attack and much of the press is there as well. I hope your colleagues are well. What happened here, when they stormed Nancy Pelosis office, they were looking to assassinate her, when they stormed clyde birds office, thatis they stormed clyde birds office, that is something which was planned and coordinated and someone knew exactly where they were going. They wanted to hang mike pence and assassinate the speaker and hang the Vice President and they were hunting down all of us and of course making the others like the Police Officers unsafe in theirwake the others like the Police Officers unsafe in their wake and a course five people are dead. Of course. You know the impeachment will not remove donald trump before the inauguration, Mitch Mcconnell said he would not bring a trial to the floor until the 19th, and so it is a difficult line as democrats to say that you need to do this now but for the majority whip to say but we dont need to put this on the senate floor for dont need to put this on the senate floorfor 100 dont need to put this on the senate floorfor100 days. Either dont need to put this on the senate floor for 100 days. Either you dont need to put this on the senate floorfor100 days. Either you have to do it now or not at all. floorfor100 days. Either you have to do it now or not at all. I admire ourwhip to do it now or not at all. I admire our whip who is a man of history and a former teacher of history, and so i see the wisdom in his recommendation. But at this moment im of the urgency of this moment andl im of the urgency of this moment and i think we must meet it. We know america is shocked and dismayed by what has happened, that the president of the United States incited insurrection, by that i mean incited insurrection, by that i mean incited a storming and a takeover, attempted takeover of the capital, we must act with urgency, and i call upon Mitch Mcconnell and the Senate Republicans to say that we have a constitutional duty here. I dont ca re constitutional duty here. I dont care that the calendar will run out, because he should be tried and convicted. The likes of mo brooks who was on the stage at the rally, the republican congressman, ted cruz, what about them . What sort of censure should they face . cruz, what about them . What sort of censure should they face . I hope we will bring the weight of our power to those actors who aided and abetted the insurrection, and the constitution speaks to that. It is very clear at the same for all they and others played and we will sadly learn much more in the coming days and weeks and months. They should face the consequences and should be censured and Everything Else we can do. Constitutionalarticle censured and Everything Else we can do. Constitutional article 14 anticipates this kind of aiding and abetting of an enemy. Good to see you back home safe and sound with yourfamily. You back home safe and sound with your family. Thanks for joining you back home safe and sound with yourfamily. Thanks forjoining us. Thank you so much. What i heard there was a lot of anger at the dangerous position that they had been put in and when republicans talk about unity, democrats say, we are not putting this under the rug, we are not sweeping this aside because this was a threat to ourselves and families. Mike pences daughter was there with him as was his wife and i think that is what im picking up from democrats at the moment. And some republicans are also furious at the insecure position and the danger they were put in. Im struggling to come to terms with the republican position right now because they are the party of law and order and Mitch Mcconnell is angry and mike pence is angry, and yet they seem to be moving away from impeachment and moving away from impeachment and moving away from the 25th amendment, so what is their position . There is no unity in this town. Those initial calls we heard on wednesday and thursday for unity have quickly disappeared and people are back into their tribal groups and they are listening to the base and the base still supports President Trump and they are responding in purely political terms and they think they cant afford to support any of those moves. Interesting point. They cant afford because there is a growing number of businesses now who want very little to do with donald trump. Twitter and facebook have banned trump indefinitely, taking away his biggest megaphone. Stripe is no longer processing credit card payments for his campaign, shopify stopped operating Online Stores for the trump 0rganization and the campaign. Parler, which is similar to twitter, has gone offline after amazon withdrew its web hosting services. Suddenly, Trump Supporters are searching around for a new medium. It raises questions about the power and responsibility of Big Tech Companies was their response too little to late . There is no question some of the Trump Supporters were radicalised in these social media bubbles. With us to discuss is the New York Times tech journalist and host of the sway podcast, kara swisher. Thanks forjoining us. Of these Big Tech Companies that host these Online Platforms where some of the transporters were radicalised, having a moment of self doubt and reflection and wondering whether they should have acted earlier . Some of the Trump Supporters were radicalised. They should have acted earlier, and the interesting thing is that the billionaires got us into this but the billionaires are now also trying to deal with these issues. Yes, ithink also trying to deal with these issues. Yes, i think they have taken, it is almost four years since they have done anything and they are doing something Withjoe Biden and his administration coming in and not being very happy about their behaviour, just ten days before that happened, and it took this much to make them do it. Now they are shocked by what they have brought about and a lot of people will begin to look at that carefully, while the tech people did the right thing, what have they been doing the rest of the time . It is not going to change, because people are still going to sign up for these social media platforms and the companies themselves, they may get beyond donald trump, but they make a lot of money from controversial figures being on their platforms, and i wonder how much beyond this week and next week they are really going to try and please what is out there on twitter and parler. They make more money from regular mums groups, they dont make money doing this, and abetting terrorist actions is not a Good Business at all. They should not be in it. One of the issues, what is their business precisely and do they need this way to create user numbers to go up . That will be a big question, and a lot of people who make these things are feeling bad about it and a lot of employees are and they have a lot of power at these companies. What has happened, just because you can invent something and not know the repercussions, that is a very american thing, lets go ahead and do it. Right now there is a lot of reflection within Silicon Valley about what they have done and this has been finally after a lot of continuing upping the stakes, this is the thing which has really got attention unfortunately. is the thing which has really got attention unfortunately. I spent yea rs attention unfortunately. I spent years in the middle east reporting on islamist terrorism and we have spoken about radicalisation online in that regard, and the one thing that struck me hearing those people who were at the capitol on wednesday, it was the breadth of people who were there. The soccer mums and policemen, firemen, soldiers, all these people logging into social media bubbles, so you have got to ask, whether it is the algorithms that are directing everybody to these places and whether the social Media Companies need to look at that . This is systemic and people dont realise, they talk about addiction or misinformation or disinformation or anything else, and about privacy issues, and it was all the same thing, a systemic way that cause down our brain stems and radicalised as us, it goes towards lizard brain, and they do have sociologists on the staff of these companies and they know how to get you to push the red button and that is what they want you to do. It is notjust that but also content moderation, they are wrapping themselves up in the First Amendment when in fact i dont believe they have read it, actually, they think this is a First Amendment issue but it isnt because the First Amendment says Congress Shall make no law not facebook or google, is congress, so these companies can make laws and they can make rules and what they do is they make some and what they do is they make some and then they are very capricious in how they enforce them, and a lot of the stuff has a thing which hits our brain stem in some way that is like an addiction and one of the issues is in the absence of good news or our leaders are saying use is a good thing, this is what people believe when they see it coming over a screen. When they see it coming over a screen. So true. Thanks forjoining us. Stay with us on bbc news, still to come children of the uk rejoice england football great gary lineker talks to us about his new role educating the uks locked down kids. A failed Asylum Seeker who stabbed Three Friends to death as they sat together in a park has been sentenced to life in prison. Khairi saadallah shouted Allahu Akhbar as he fatally stabbed james furlong, david wails and Joseph Ritchie bennett in reading in june last year. 26 year old saadallah had been released from prison a fortnight earlier. Daniel sandford reports. Police, emergency. A load of people have been stabbed in forbury gardens. How many people . We need police and ambulances. Yeah, iunderstand. All the ambulances you can get. 0n the phone to the 999 operator, roger smith had just witnessed a deadly terrorist attack. The speed of it caught on cctv. The attacker, khairi saadallah, was hunted downjust moments later by an armed police. In the park, Three Friends lay dying. History teacherjames furlong, Research Scientist dr david wails, and pharmaceutical managerjoseph richie bennett. All were gay, but he doesnt seem to have targeted them for that. He then moved on to another group of men. With the bereaved families sitting in silence, mrjustice sweeney said because of the degree of planning and because of the religious motivation and because of the number of people killed, he would sentence saadallah with a whole life order, meaning he will never be released. The families welcomed the sentence but now want some answers. 0n the facts of this case there are now serious questions that need answering. Most notably, how the killer was ever in a position to commit these horrific acts. Khairi saadallah was a failed Asylum Seeker, whod never been deported. Originally from libya, he fought in the civil war there as a teenager, before fleeing to britain. Here, he was in and out of prison for a string of violent offences, and was briefly brought to the attention of mi5 as someone who might travel to syria, but he was discounted as a threat. He came out of prison just two weeks before the attack. Daniel sandford, bbc news. The uk government has given itself the ambitious target of vaccinating tens of millions of people by the spring. It says 2. 5 million coronavirus vaccines have been administer so far and have launched across england seven new mass inoculation centres today. The Prime Minister has warned that the National Health service is at risk of being overwhelmed with the high numbers of people needing hospital care. As you will see from the graph the Health Secretary showed at a News Conference a little earlier the number of people in uk hospitals with coronavirus is at the highest level ever. Meanwhile, here in the us, president electjoe bidens team has suggested it will release nearly all available vaccine doses, rather than holding back second doses, in a bid to get the vaccine into as many people as possible. But in truth its not about supply, its about getting vaccines into arms. The roll out has been far too slow. So far around 9 Million People have received a first dose of the vaccine in america thats roughly 2. 5 doses per 100 people. Compare that to the uk, where that number is reported to be closer to four. States including alabama, mississippi, georgia and nevada have all reported low vaccination rates. Remember, there is no federal plan for administering vaccines every state is doing it differently. Joining us now is professor peter hotez, dean of the National School of tropical medicine at Baylor College of medicine in houston. What is the big hold up in america, what is the problem . We dont have coordination and we dont have a federal plan and it looks like nobody really prepared for the magnitude and scope of what has to be done. We have 330 million americans and we have shown we need about 75 of the population to be immunised in order to interrupt virus transmission, 240 million americans, and no one did the back of the envelope calculation to understand that we need to vaccinate roughly 2 million americans every day from now the next eight months, and what is going to be required for that. The hope was that the federal government through operational works would leave this but now we realise, no, it was only about putting the boxes into the ups and fedex trucks and sending it out to the states and thenit and sending it out to the states and then it was up to them, but they dont have the bandwidth and the horsepower intellect lead to know how to do this. Intellectually. There is vaccine scepticism out there despite Public Education efforts, and in some states nurses in particular and Health Care Workers are turning down an opportunity to get the vaccine, would it make sense to just ditch the peer system and try to get as many people vaccinated on a first come first serve basis . Tier system. Tier system. First come first serve basis . Tier system. Tier system. It made sense initially, but i think from then on, the rules get very fussy very quickly, and they are tone deaf to the fact that we just dont have a Health System in place that can operationalise it. We have to do something which is very simple to understand, and we have learned in 2020 that the minute we try to ask complex things, things can fall apart quickly, this happen with diagnostic testing at the inability to detect the virus entering into new york in the southern surge, so it has to be a high throughput, exceedingly simple, and really recognising the massive scope. If you start putting in fussy rules thatis you start putting in fussy rules that is guaranteed to fail, unfortunately. On those fussy rules, it would seem that the uk and the us are now on a similar path, talking about mass vaccination centres, do you feel that maybe it was the priority system that was the problem, that maybe we should be getting it into as many arms as quickly as possible . The priority syste m quickly as possible . The priority system did not help but the big issues, and the biggest one is the fa ct issues, and the biggest one is the fact that the pharmacy chains and the hospital chains by themselves we re never the hospital chains by themselves were never adequate to vaccinate the volume of people that would need to be vaccinated, and there was a lack of recognition that we need to open up of recognition that we need to open up as of recognition that we need to open upasa of recognition that we need to open up as a supplement some big mega centres and some of the outdoor foot ball centres and some of the outdoor football stadiums or baseball stadiums come up so we are learning that now. We should have been doing this all year but that is the reality. Then there are the fussy regulations which needs to be corrected, and so, we need to have adequate amount of vaccine and i dont think the pfizer and moderna of vaccines by themselves can be scaled sufficiently and we knew that, and im not sure we can make enough of that, we are going to have to bring in the other vaccines like the Astrazeneca Oxford vaccine, bit more robust in terms of production capacity. Professor, thanks for joining us. There was some good news. My dad, 90 years old. There he is. He got the pfizer vaccine. That was at didcot town hall in oxfordshire. It has been a tough few months for him it with my mother dying in november. It was good news for him to get the vaccine. He is more used to chatting about sports, but next week the uks most famous sporting pundit gary lineker will be swapping match of the day for a school classroom. Yes, this week the bbc begins a daily five hour package of lessons for children who are at home through the lockdown, including a programme called celebrity supply teacher. Garys programme will air next monday. Also taking part spice girl geri halliwell, chef Heston Blumenthal and the singer songwriter kelis. And what will they be teaching, well for gary, once of barcelona, it will, of course, be espanol. It isjust a good idea and a Good Campaign for the bbc to get this done, encouraging kids to keep learning while they are at home during these difficult circumstances. I was happy to play a small part. A great initiative. Im very impressed you can remember your spanish. You spent three seasons at barcelona which is presumably where you learned it, can you still remember it . I can, yes. I still speak reasonably well, i was very flue nt speak reasonably well, i was very fluent at that time of my life and i was even dreaming in that language application, although that was 30 years ago since i left. I dont get the chance to practice more but when i lived in barcelona no one spoke english so you had no choice. I had spanish lessons for two years. Sean dyche said why dont we vaccinate all the footballers so we can spare the vast amount of resources going into testing and put it back into the nhs . How do you feel about that . Ive heard this idea going around at the moment, and i think the difficult thing is getting the general public on board with footballersjumping general public on board with footballers jumping the queue general public on board with footballersjumping the queue in terms of vaccinations, but they are providing us with some relief and entertainment, watching sport, and other elites but, as well, that we are seeing on tv station, and i think it would be received in different ways, some people would say why should they get the vaccine before the elderly or the vulnerable . Before the elderly or the vulnerable . I understand before the elderly or the vulnerable . I understand that, but maybe it would take a couple of thousand vaccinations of all the players, and i think the football world would make a donation into an nhs charity or Something Like that. It is difficult because i can understand the pros and cons because you dont want to favour football but at the same time footballers are doing so much for us and other sports, as well. It is definitely worth considering. As long as it is proving those vaccinations they get are not taken from people who are vulnerable, maybe it is fair enough, andl vulnerable, maybe it is fair enough, and i think we all want to see foot ball and i think we all want to see football continue if we can. Well done, gary lineker. Did you see that he got to eight with his key keepy uppys . Anyway, did you see i got ina keepy uppys . Anyway, did you see i got in a burnley reference . Arent you playing west ham this weekend . No, manchester united. You are an honorary burnley supporter. You have got the shirt. Yes, i have got the kit. Do you wear it . Yes, all the time. Every weekend. You liar see you tomorrow. Hello there. Finally, the new year brought something a little bit milder across the country. For many, monday was a cloudy story, but certainly a milderfeel out there. Not for all, however. Just to the far north of the country, we had further snow as the temperatures really struggled by day to climb above freezing. And we keep that north south divide for many over the next couple of days, with the mildest of the weather across Northern Ireland, wales and central southern england. We start off rather cloudy with showery outbreaks of rain retreating down to the southwest through tuesday afternoon, clearer skies elsewhere. Thats where the best of the sunshine will be, but it will contrast with the feel of the weather. 4 5 degrees across scotland and northeast england, ten or ii further south and west. That weather front is set to return as we go through tuesday night, and its dragging in some more heavy, persistent rain into Northern Ireland and western fringes of scotland. However, we still have that divide in the feel of the weather, so to start wednesday morning, a mild start underneath this pyramid of frontal systems, that colder sitting out to the east. Now, where that weather front bumps into that cold, there is a bit of a tricky situation developing as to just how much sleet and snow we will see. Certainly for a time to Higher Ground, there will be a spell of wintry weather moving its way further north and east. Behind it, though, the milder air is set to win that battle, and here, it will turn increasingly to rain. But again, we still have that contrast between mild air in the west and colder air to the east. As we move out of thursday, weve still got those weatherfronts dawdling across the country. So, for a time on thursday, theres still going to be some snow, but its chiefly to Higher Ground on thursday as its turning primarily to rain across the country. Those temperatures sitting around 4 5 degrees in the northeast, but again, well see those double digits down to the south and west. By the time we get thursday out of the way, into friday, a brief ridge of High Pressure builds and quietens things down, but the weather story will turn just that little bit cooler as we see some clearer skies and more in the way of sunshine. So, friday, not as mild as it has been across the southwest. In fact, many areas will struggle to get into double figures were looking at around 4 8c at the very best. Now, into the start of the weekend, though, a significant area of low pressure looks likely to threaten. The winds will strengthen, there are plenty of isobars on the charts, Gale Force Gusts of winds are likely and the heaviest of the rain particularly to the north and west. That wind direction coming from a south westerly, so a milder source. So, once again, we could see those temperatures back into double digits, therell be a lot of cloud around and the winds certainly a feature, with some of that rain quite persistent along west facing coasts. That low pressure eases away. Sunday should be a quieter day in terms of rainfall amount. Still quite a blustery wind, but a relatively drier, quieter story for the second half of the weekend. Into next week, we start off with a northwesterly flow, a coolerfeel driving in some showers, but low pressure never too far away and it does look likely that its going to stay unsettled when we look further ahead. The position of this low still subject to question, but its likely that the wettest of the weather is going to be into the south and west, and those temperatures will stay on the cool side for the time of year. Thats it, take care. Tonight at ten the uk is at the worst point of the pandemic so far and lockdown rules might have to be tightened further still. The warning comes as details are published of a mass vaccination programme, with seven major centres open across england. The next few weeks are going to be the worst weeks of this pandemic in terms of numbers into the nhs. We report from another hospital under sustained and significant pressure, amid warnings that next week will be even worse. So i dont know how much more we can do before it gets to, like, we literally, theres no more room, theres no more beds, theres no more nurses, theres no more space, theres no more anything. So yeah, i am quite apprehensive. More than 2. 3 Million People have now been vaccinated across the uk, but the governments under pressure to boost that rate
