I dont feel that i earn a fair wage for the work that i do. You are constantly told that having any sort of luxury in life is sort of bad and you need to knuckle down and work harder and it will all come to you. That is what i find most difficult about it. It is notjust not having enough money each month to maybe go out to the pub once a week, it is being told that is a luxury you shouldnt be able to afford. It used to be thought that work was the surest way out of poverty. That old truth has been demolished in the decade since the financial crash. In 2008, more than half those living in poverty here in london were unemployed. Now most are in work and they live alongside very conspicuous wealth. Every day they see a world that they seem to be locked out of. What does that do to their sense that they have a proper stake in society . Their sense that shared citizenship has any real meaning . For centuries the camel trains of the silk road dominated trade between china and the west. Now china wants to recreate the silk road. This time by train. When wu xiaodong started here 3a years ago, china sold the world next to nothing. Now he is a foot soldier for a trading superpower. I asked how that had changed him. Translation we are under a lot of pressure, expectations are high, but there is also a lot of hope. We need the train to develop faster and better. The pressure is coming from the top. Not led by merchants, but by a president. Chinese emperors once claimed to rule all under heaven. With the United States no longer leading on trade, president xi has seized his chance. He calls his vision the belt and road. Chinas belt and road vision is so vast it may be decades before we can tell whether it is a worthy successor to the ancient silk road. But what we can say is that with no other Country Offering a big idea right now, this is the most ambitious bid to shape our century. Already china shapes our material lives. China says thats nonsense, that this is merely to boost trade, that its a revival of the ancient silk road that, of course, was going on here. But i think whats important to remember is that the big difference between the ancient silk road and the new version is that this is not private traders, private americanants dealing amongst them merchants dealing amongst themselves, this is chinese money.
