The uk government blames a technical error after the daily number of new confirmed coronavirus cases nearly doubles from the day before to almost 13,000. And runners from all over the world are taking part in the first ever virtual London Marathon. And the elite runners are pounding the streets of london albeit on a very different course. The winner of the elite womens race will be crossing the line here at the mall and about half an hour. The mall. Welcome to bbc news to viewers here in the uk and around the world stay with us for the latest news and analysis. Donald trumps doctor has said the president has made substantial progress since his Coronavirus Diagnosis but that hes not yet out of the woods. Mr trump himself recorded a video message from hospital, saying that the next few days would be the real test, but that he was starting to feel good and would be back at work soon. Theres still confusion, though, over exactly when the president was diagnosed with coronavirus and whether he attended official events after receiving it. 0ur north america correspondent peter bowes has the latest. Donald trumps a first full day in hospital, a day of confusion and concern over the president s health with mixed messages coming from his doctors and the white house. And then late in the day a tweet from the president and another video, an update from mr trump on his condition. I came here, wasnt feeling so well. I feel much better now. We are working hard to get me all the way back. I have to be back. When he addressed reporters outside Walter Reed Medical Center earlier the president s personal physician said mr trumps symptoms, a mild cough, nasal congestion and fatigue, were now resolving and improving. But he was vague on whether the president had needed oxygen at any point. Has he ever been on supplemental oxygen . Right now he is not on oxygen. You keep saying right now but should we read into the fact that he had been previously . Yesterday and today he was not on oxygen. He has not been on it during his covid treatment. Hes not on oxygen right now. It later emerged that mr trump had received oxygen at the white house before he was admitted to hospital. There was further confusion when the white house chief of staff mark meadows indicated to reporters at the hospital that the president was still not on a clear path to a full recovery. There is a consensus that the next few days will be crucial. Donald trump has been given two experimental drugs which its hoped will speed up his recovery from covid i9. Im starting to feel good. You dont know over the next period of a few days, i guess thats the real test. So well be seeing what happens over those next couple of days. Mr trump also sought to explain his decision not to shelter at home from the virus. I had no choice because ijust didnt want to stay in the white house. I was given that alternative. Stay in the white house, lock yourself in, dont ever leave, dont even go to the oval office, just stay upstairs and enjoy it. Dont see people, dont talk to people and just be done with it. And i cant do that. With the president in hospital there is growing concern that more members of his inner circle are also testing positive for the virus. Many of them attended what has been described as a super spreader event at the white house last weekend when mr trump named his nominee for the vacant seaton the supreme court. They include the former governor of newjersey Chris Christie who has checked himself into hospital with a slight fever. This is a crisis that has engulfed the Trump Administration less than a month before the election. Donald trumps rival for the presidency, the Democratic Party candidate joe biden, has temporarily suspended some Campaign Activities because of the president s illness. But he is continuing to push for votes. This is what he had to say when asked to compare his policies to those of mr trump. Im in a little bit of a spot here because i dont want to be attacking the president and the first lady now because they now have contracted coronavirus. This isnt about politics. More than 200,000 americans have died from covid. 7. 3 million have been infected. 30 million have lost pay cheques, hours or theirjobs entirely. Dr Amitava Banerjee is an epidemiologist and clinical doctor at University College london. Hejoins me now. He is getting these two experimental treatment including remdecivir. These are experimental drugs meaning we dont know everything we want to know and still under evaluation but remdesivir does have convincing evidence that it reduces the time patients have to stay in hospital. He is still in the early stage of infection. They will be monitoring him over the next few days and it is encouraging that he is seen in the video to be reasonably well. As well as the acute phase we should focus on the fact that most people with coronavirus can have some symptoms and be unwell for several weeks or months with the so called covid long covid so it is not just the acute phase. How significant is that he received oxygen while in the white house . Im not sure we can speculate how significant that is. Clearly he was symptomatic and unwell enough that he needed and wanted to be admitted to hospital. Whether he needed oxygen im not sure how significant that is. What about the various factors such as gender and age. He is in his 70s. And his weight. From his last medical check he is classified clinically as obese. How much difference there all of that make . That is what we should focus on. When somebody who has high propensity is unwell again we look at how important underlying risk conditions and factors are at how severe Coronavirus Infection can be. So age and things are important and looking at how we can treat those and reduce the risk of severe infection as well. So how might Donald Trumps condition affect the us president ial election next month is professor scott lucas who is a professor of american studies at the university of birmingham. He joins live from there now. We were hearing joe biden in the video saying he is lord to attack donald trump in hospital. But the campaign does go on in a very different way. In some ways while joe biden may not refer directly to donald trump he will refer to the importance of the coronavirus epidemic and how it has been managed and he will continue to talk about responsibility, the need to listen to medical advisers, the need for social distancing and the need to wear a mask because donald trump posted against all of that. He is pushed aside his medical advisers and defied social distancing at the large rallies and in the white house and he is not only refused to wear a mask but told his followers they dont need to wear one. Sojoe biden will be very corded but very steady in the need for risk leadership and responsibility. Given that trump will be off the campaign trail and their number one outlet to rally support is large rallies which will come under increased scrutiny due to the lack of social distancing and masks at those events. Do you think Many American voters will be feeling an outpouring of sympathy for the president no matter what they think of him politically . He is in hospital and has set himself the next few days will be the real test. Could that have an impact on the voting on election day . |j could that have an impact on the voting on election day . I think that is what the Trump Campaign will do, try to make this a personal story and stay narrow on donald trump and his fight against the virus rather than going wide and talking about the 218,000 deaths are the 7. 3 million cases. There are two problems with that. Donald trump has been farfrom a problems with that. Donald trump has been far from a character who depends on sympathy. He in fact has been much more aggressive and forthright. We saw in the first president ial debate three days before he went into hospital. So being sympathetic to him might be a bit of a stretch for undecided voters. Secondly the fact of the matter is donald trump has spent months denying that this was a severe crisis. He said that deaths from coronavirus would be near zero and he is no on record telling journalists he deliberately played down. Had he acknowledged the severity of coronavirus and supported medical experts from the start it would be much easier to elicit sympathy when he then comes down with it. After having tried to pushit down with it. After having tried to push it away for eight months, actually, sir, have you been deceptive with not only yourself but the rest of america about the severity of this . The fact he is ill with coronavirus and both candidates are in the 70s, does this make the battle between the two Vice President ial candidates more important than it might normally be . Absolutely. But first of all, one other effect of this trump hospitalisation as it knocks the props out from under the disinformation that has been pushed forward by the trump folks thatjoe biden is mentally and physically unfit to be president. Wednesday night is important because it shows two other important figures on how america goes forward but will also bea america goes forward but will also be a contrast from last weeks debate. I dont expect mike pence to be interrupting and hectoring. And also there will be debates about the racial and social issues around black lives matter and racial issues. And the economy. Almost 13,000 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed across the uk yesterday, nearly double the previous days total. The government said the spike was caused by a technical error which led to a delay in publishing some of the positive results from the last week of september. 0ur Political Correspondent nick eardley told us more about the technical error. Basically what the government is saying is the figure was so high yesterday because it included a lot of tests not recorded properly over a week period between 24th of september and the 1st of october. We do not know when those tests were ta ken so we dont know what it means for the other days in which he figures have gone up and down but what the government is saying is we shouldnt necessarily take that figure at face value because it does include those previous tests. In india, the chief minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh has called for police to investigate the alleged gang rape and murder of a 19 year old dalit woman. The case has sparked outrage across india and triggered days of protests. Ishleen kaur has more. Another day of stand offs and clashes between state police officials, journalists and the leaders of indias opposition party. No force can silence us these were the words of former Congress President rahul gandhi after meeting the family of the 19 year old dalit woman who was allegedly gang raped and murdered in northern india. Rahul and his sister priyanka were finally successful in meeting the victims family after a n u nsuccessful attempt on thursday when they were detained by local police. The Uttar Pradesh government has been criticised for its mishandling of the case, including allegations of cremating the body against the familys wish. The victims brother spoke to bbc hindi. Translation they forbade us from speaking to any journalists. We want to know whose body was burnt on that day, and if it was my sisters body, why did they burn her in this manner . All of us requested the police and administration to allow us to see her one last time. A Senior Police official has denied these allegations. Translation when the body was bought that night, the brother of the victim gave us his consent to cremate the body. I had a conversation with the family for about ten to 15 minutes. It was done with their consent. Furious protests against the police and the government have been staged across the country. The Allahabad High Court has summoned top state officials to appear before it on the 12th of october. Rape and Sexual Violence have been under the spotlight again and again we see it in different states and with different conditions. Rape and Sexual Violence have been under the spotlight in india since a gang rape case in 2012. Tougher laws against rape in india have been brought in, but the country still struggles to tackle Sexual Violence against women. In a video message from hospital, President Trump says hes doing well but that the next few days will be crucial as he continues his treatment for coronavirus, more members of the president s inner circle are also testing positive they include his Campaign Adviser Chris Christie, whos checked himself into hospital. The uk government blames a technical error after the daily number of new confirmed coronavirus cases nearly doubles from the day before to almost 13,000. More than 40,000 people from all over the world are taking part in the first ever virtual London Marathon. Only the elite athletes will run together, completing the 26. 2 miles around stjamess park in london. 0ther runners are taking part wherever they are by using an app to track their progress. Katherine downes is at stjamess park this morning has it stopped raining . I dont think ive been making any progress and of anything i think ive been going backwards. The rain has continued to fall on the temperatures he is still pretty chilly even know that the sun is up. The elite womens race started at quarter past seven this morning and absolutely torrential rain and the Big Questions about how the athletes flying in from africa in particular on special flights where they would be kept safe in this bio bubble created around this London Marathon, how they would land in london and adapt to the conditions. They have been here for a week or so training and acclimatising the conditions this morning were absolutely wild. Rain pounding down on the streets and they are all lining up and in the running vests and running kit. It was freezing cold but they have a nswered it was freezing cold but they have answered the question as to how they can cope in these conditions. These are live conditions of the leader from kenya who is the world record holder and the defending champion and favourite to win this title in london once again. She set off accompanied by her countrywomen who is the World Champion and took the title in doha. The first three quarters of the race it was a head to head. It is such a different race this year. Across tower bridge and docklands and across the embankment and back here to the mall the athletes running 19 laps of a 2. 5 kilometre map around stjamess park. Bridget kosgei is looking almost certain to win the race. In terms of ordinary riders for whom the London Marathon is often the highlight of their year and often their running career, how disappointing is it they cant be there are other making the best of it with this virtual alternative . There are other making the best of it with this virtual alternative . M depends on the weather wherever they are in the country because it is like this in london and conditions elsewhere in the country, the challenges very much the same. Still that 26. 2 miles they will have to train for that 26. 2 miles they will have to trainforand that 26. 2 miles they will have to train for and have to push themselves through. I think the benefit of having a delayed London Marathon, it is normally run in april but here we are not and those athletes instead of having to train and push themselves during the british winter and those long dark nights will actually have the summer to train and that has probably been a benefit. It has to be a bit of a disappointment for people who went to the ballots last year hoping to get to the streets of london and run past those landmarks. 750,000 people normally lining the streets of london to cheer them on and of course hoping to raise money for their favourite charities, course hoping to raise money for theirfavourite charities, charities that have taken such a hit on funding throughout the pandemic. 45,000 funding throughout the pandemic. 115,000 people getting out and getting running and raising money is it is hoped going to close that shortfall to some extent but not quite raise as much money as you would normally expect from a London Marathon weekend. Yes it will be a disappointment but we have been given the option to delay their entry so if they did not fancy taking part in the virtual London Marathon they have been given the option tojust delay marathon they have been given the option to just delay running until next year and even 2022 as well but 45,000 people running a marathon wherever they are in the country and they have got from midnight this morning till midnight tonight to com plete morning till midnight tonight to complete it so maybe looking for the best gaps in the weather. Stay warm and thank you very much for that.
