Over a u turn on student debt. Christopher nolan tells the story of the dunkirk evacuation, will take a look at that film in the film review. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. The Director General of the bbc, tony hall, says work is already underway to tackle the Gender Pay Gap at The Corporation. His comments come after some of the bbcs best known female personalities signed an open letter calling for urgent action. The presenters claire balding, fiona bruce and jane garvey, are among the more than a0 signatories. Our Media Correspondent David Sillito reports. Alexjones of the one show. Mishal hussein. Sue barker. More than a0 of the most famous female presenters at the bbc are calling on The Corporation to act now to end its Gender Pay Gap. Good morning, friends, and thanks for tuning in. The trigger for todays letter, that list published this week of the pay deals for the bbcs highest paid stars. In the top 20 names, there was only one woman. The best paid men were being paid twice what the top women were earning. This open letter to the papers says that this weeks annual report confirmed what many have long suspected, that women were being paid less than men for the same work. 0n the whole i think its fantastic that so many wonderful women have been prepared to stick their head above the parapet. Weve got stick, we knew we were going to get stick, thats why we knew it was never going to be an easy thing to do, but it isntjust about, in fact its not about getting whacking great pay rises for women who are already well paid. Its about pay parity and getting fairness for everybody. Todays letter says the bbc has known about the pay disparity for years. We all want to do on the record to call upon you to act now. Womans hour. Indeed, when programmes such as womans hour first went on air 60 years ago equal pay for equal work was a pressing issue. The fact it remains an issue despite law changes in The 60s And 70s after pressures from the Womens Movement is perhaps a sign of how tough it is to find quick solutions. Attitudes about age, experience and authority affect this pay divide. Its also worth noting in the top 20 theres not a single black or asian presenter. And this also comes at a time when the bbc is facing opposition over its plans to change the terms and conditions for the rest of the staff who are paid a fraction of what any star gets. The labour Leaderjeremy Corbyn says this taps into a wider issue of fairness and pay. This Gender Pay Gap is appalling. We would insist on a strong gender pay audit of every organisation, and we would also look at a 20 1 ratio between the Chief Executive and the lowest paid staff in every Public Sector organisation. Meanwhile, the governments Equalities Minister said that if anything showed the value of their new regulations requiring firms to reveal pay gaps, it was this. I think its impossible not to be shocked, to be honest, atjust how different some of those differentials were. And, of course, this is the whole reason why we brought forward these regulations, because as much as anything else, transparency is demonstrating to organisations that its a reputational issue. In response, the bbc said today its overall pay gap is 10 , less than the National Average of 18 , but it needed to go further and faster to close the pay gap. The corporations Director General says hes confident next years figures will look very different. David sillito, bbc news. Earlier i spoke to professor lis howell, from City University london, shes a journalist and whos worked for the bbc, sky and itn, and has conducted research on women in broadcasting. She said the Gender Pay Gap was a problem right across the news industry. This is clearly, in a sense, that keep off the us but. Throughout the industry there is a bias against women and interestingly and not yet flagged up, the actual number of women on screen is flagged up, the actual number of women on screen is really quite limited compared to the number of men. So it is notjust the rich want at the top, being annoyed because they are not paid enough, but absolutely everybody is a fact that by this discrimination. If you look at some of the programmes, over a 2a hour period there is a dominance of men. The newsroom behind me here, it seems to be more or less an even balance. It is really an on Screen Problem . In topical, factual programmes, it has more men than women and the entry level in newsroom is you have an equal number but as time goes on, the position of women is eroded and that really needs to be looked at at quite a deep level. To some extent, even at entry level, the boys tend to have a slight advantage because people recruit in their image. We are slightly distracted by the heavy hitters and eke banners and it is awful they should be discriminated against but this is a much deeper problem. But im giving pay rises to women, what can you do . A cut in pay to men . I think it is realistic. James purnell, the head of radio and head of policy, you can recalibrate the contracts because they are negotiated on a year by year basis and we have fears agents who run perhaps i shouldnt say, icub ill, cabal. Nobody really knows what is going on so it is difficult to find the line you should be paying people. A 20 year old man has died in east london, after a confrontation in a shop with a policeman. Cctv footage has emerged, of the officer wrestling the man to the floor, in the store in hackney, early yesterday morning. Our Home Affairs Correspondent Daniel Sandford reports. The moment when Rashan Charles ran into his local late night shop pursued by a Police Officer. At first the arrest was calm but then the officer threw him to the floor and grabbed him around the neck. Later he was joined by what appears to be a plainclothes officer. Just over an hour later Rashan Charles was declared dead at the royal london hospital. The independent Police Complaints Commission Says an object was removed from his throat at the scene. As the cctv spread through social media, there was a growing collection of flowers and candles at the scene in haggerston, and growing anger. Pauline pearce, famous for Chastising Rioters on camera in 2011, told me she knew rashan well. That boy should be alive today sitting in a cell somewhere being able to tell his side of the story. But instead, he is laying on a Morgue Waiting for an autopsy and waiting to be buried. And weve got to pick up the pieces. The communitys got to pick up the pieces. Many people visiting the shop and the neighbouring barbers shop were clearly upset. Im angry, im sad, i feel for his family, his mother. I know him personally and its disgusting. Rashan charless death follows a similar incident last month, also in east london. And there is a growing anger here that young men are dying while being arrested, even when no weapons are involved. Tonight, the always fragile trust in the police in this area is under intense strain. Daniel sandford, bbc news, haggerston. Prince william and prince harry, have spoken candidly about their relationship with their mother, princess diana, in a documentary marking the twentieth anniversary of her death. They describe her sense of fun, but also speak of their regret, that their last conversation with her, was a rushed phone call. 0ur Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchells report, contains some flash photography. To the watching world, she was the princess whose image appeared constantly on front pages. It was a glamorous but necessarily limited impression of the real person. Now nearly 20 years after dianas death in the car accident in paris, her sons william and harry have spoken in an itv documentary about diana, the mother who did so much to shape their childhood. We felt, you know, incredibly loved, harry and i. And im very grateful that that love still feels there. It was that love that even if she was on the other side of the room, as a son you could feel it. The person who emerges from william and harrys description is a woman with a strong sense of fun. When everybody says to me, you know, so, she was fun, give us an example. All i can hear is her laugh in my head. And that sort of crazy laugh where there wasjust pure happiness shown on her face. One of her mottos to me was that you can be as naughty as you want, just dont get caught. And they talk about their mothers death. They recall the last time they spoke to her and they reflect on the overwhelming public reaction and how they coped with the week which culminated in herfuneral. As william himself has said, it is a tribute to diana from her sons in which they recall the woman they hope the world will remember. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Around 30 people, many in Critical Condition and severely dehydrated, were removed from the vehicle in san antonio. The lorrys driver has been arrested in connection with incident. San antonio is a few hours drive from the border with mexico. One person has been killed in a shooting at a residential building used by the Israeli Embassy in jordan. The number of migrants arriving in greece is picking up again, putting increasing pressure on a country, still struggling economically. More than 8,000 people have arrived so far this year, down from the thousands who were turning up every week, two years ago. But since then, a deal to deport failed Asylum Seekers back to turkey, and the slow process of investigating cases, has led to a bottleneck in greece, and on the Island Of Lesbos in particular. 0ur correspondent, mark lowen reports. A scene thats defined europe, played out almost daily for the last two years. Staged, this time, by amnesty international, a message to europe by migrants trapped in greece or risking deportation to turkey. 11 year old Rania Al 0baidi escaped mosul and so called islamic state. For a year she was kept in Moria Migrant Camp in lesbos. Shes been moved, but the memories endure. They fight so much, yes, and i see three people dead in my eyes. They have fight and theyre dead. And i see so much blood. I see everything in moria. I see everything and i see mosul. Scarring the olive groves of lesbos, moria now holds around 3000 migrants. Its stretched and beset with problems. Gunfire. This footage obtained by the bbc appears to show Police Violence during recent rioting. Some migrants burnt tents and threw stones. Theyre beaten by guards. 0ne escapes but a policeman goes to any length to stop him. The poor conditions and incessant wait for Asylum Applications are fuelling the rage. Eddie mangai guy says he fled congo as a political prisoner. The daily struggle here defies the empty slogans. Makeshift games pass the time. Greeks saved us when we were in the water, he says. May god bless them for it. But now the syrians are getting papers and we arent. Were in a prison here. We need Free Movement in greece. The one tap is out in the bush. Greece, still in financial crisis, forced to bear the brunt of the migrant one. The number of new arrivals is a fraction of what it was and the media has somewhat moved on but the problem persists. Crowds of migrants in an increasingly permanent camp battling long asylum procedures. Thousands stuck here in greece, caught in europes forgotten crisis. We get self harming. We get drunkenness, drug addictions, things that we didnt used to see here. Obviously, i think, are directly the results of the depression and frustration. And to be honest, the greeks, i know they feel frustrated and they feel abandoned. The island feels abandoned by the mainland and all of greece feels abandoned by the eu. Europes most bankrupt country has become its waiting room. Lives are on hold here and greece is overwhelmed. Its an explosive mix. Mark lowen, bbc news, in lesbos. The head of the powerful trade body representing all german car manufactures has told the bbc that a long transitional deal after brexit is needed, otherwise therell be a threat tojobs and investment in britain. The president of the German Automotive Industry Association has accused britain of abandoning pragmatism for ideology over the issue. The International Trade secretary, liam fox, has suggested that a transitional deal could last up to 2022. The headlines on bbc news the bbcs Director General, lord hall, says he will go further and faster to tackle the pay gap, as more than a0 female presenters sign a letter demanding The Corporation tackle the issue. A 20 year old man has died after being apprehended by a Police Officer in an east london shop. He has been named by his family as Rashan Charles. Prince william and prince harry have spoken candidly about their relationship with their mother, princess diana, In A Documentary Marking The 20th Anniversary of her death. Sport now, and a full round up from the bbc sport centre. Good evening. Lets start with cricket, where there was a day of pure drama at lords, as england women beat india to win the world cup. It had everything a sell out crowd, suspense, and a Brilliant Team performance by england to turn the match around. David 0rnstein has more. There was a time when womens cricket barely even registered with many sports fans. Now, you cant keep them away. Almost 27,000 would fill lords. Millions more watching around the world, only a match yet so much more. England won the toss and opted to bat, but the loss of sarah taylor handed india the impetus. If this was an advert for the womens game, nat sciver was providing the promotional material, though elsewhere runs were in supply. And, even when england looked to kick on, Moments Of Indian Magic checked their momentum. Chasing 229 to win, india looked to be cruising, and at one point needed just 38 runs with seven wickets in hand. But england dared to dream, and clawed their way back from a seemingly irretrievable position. Alex hartley and Anya Shrubsole did the damage. Shrubsole taking six wickets in a devastating spell that broke india and guided england to glory. A breathtaking end to a truly Ground Breaking tournament. Jordan spieth has won the open for the first time, after an exciting Battle With Fellow American matt kuchar. It was a chaotic final round at royal birkdale, but spieth held on to win by three shots. Ben croucher reports. Jordan spieth. He started the day leading, finished it winning. The bit in the middle, if only it were that simple. Jordan spieths three shot lead had already evacuated at the time he had reached the 13th. That is his ball in the shrubbery. Where to drop it. The practice range, that will have to do. Miraculously he walked off with a bogey and out of the lead. Birkdale was witnessing another jordan bogey and out of the lead. Birkdale was witnessing Anotherjordan Spieth major meltdown. As Arnold Palmer said, though, success depends less on strength of body, more on strength of mind. Where many minds might have been muddled, speaks unscrambled. His tee shot on the next hole nearly went in. Jordan spieths unscrambled. This never looked like missing. Purdy, eagle, birdie, birdie, and no catching him now. I felt like once i lost my Lead Com Pletely now. I felt like once i lost my lead completely and we were tied, i actually felt the nerves go away. You just dont know what your mind is going to do to you sometimes. You can control it to an extent but certain situations are going to bring more attention, and you have the kind of channel that the right way, play the right shots, and that was a difficult thing to do today because it was just soak up and down. Because it was just soak upanddown. Jordan spieth turns 24 on thursday with a third major title. The only other man to do that, a certain jack title. The only other man to do that, a certainjack nicklaus, and he won 18. There was champagne on the streets of paris, as chris froome sealed a fourth Tour De France title. It is froomes third title in a row, and he did it without winning a single stage of the tour. The Team Sky Rider is now second in the all time list, and said after the race that this will be remembered as the closest and most hard fought of his tour victories. Incredible feeling, to ride on to the champs elysees. Even after having done it three times previously, it doesnt diminish it at all. Still all the same emotions are here. It isjust incredible, absolutely incredible. Champs elysees. England look set to progress to the Knockout Stages of the womens european championship, after a 2 0 win over spain in breda. Fran kirby and jodie taylor got englands goals to take them to six points in the group. This strike by taylor takes her to four goals for the tournament already, after her hat trick in the opening match. A point from Theirfinal Group game against portugal will be enough to see england go through. Scotland look as though they will be heading out at the group stage in their first major tournament. They did score against portugal in rotterdam, Erin Cuthbert making it1 1. But portugal scored again to make it 2 1 and register their first win. Scotland sit bottom of the group, without a point. They could still qualify if they beat spain next, but will have to rely on results elsewhere. Thats all the sport for now. Thank you very much. The police are thought to be in attendance after an incident at sussex. They have reported being ordered out of public areas within the park, and told to remain in their lodgings. They have confirmed that there is an ongoing incident, they havent said exactly what the nature of it is. If we get more information we will of course bring it to you straightaway. The rules on Blood Donation are to be relaxed in england and scotland to allow more gay men and sex workers to donate. Experts say there is clear evidence it is safe for those groups to give blood after abstaining from sex for three months, instead of 12. Hiv charities have welcomed the changes. Benjamin butterworth is a reporter for pink news, the lgbt news website. He told me that restrictions on gay men giving blood were first introduced more than 30 years ago. So during the 1980s there was obviously a lot of heightened sensitivity about gay men and the spread of hiv and aids. So the government then introduced a role which said that men who have sex with men would not be allowed to donate load at all and it was only a couple of years ago that that blanket and was removed. And until presently there is a 12 month ban on people who have had sex with. Men who have sex with men, which will be reduced to 12 weeks starting in 2018. So effectively three months in future. I think it is a real step forward. It and injustice that a gay couple in a monogamous relationship would be banned from giving blood whereas a heterosexual person who might have risky sexual activities would be free to go to the centre and donate blood whenever they wished to donate blood. I dont think it was there and i dont think it was based on evidence. The argument for a long time was that 93v argument for a long time was that gay men were a High Risk Group for being hiv positive. Now, it remains the case that more game men are hiv positive than heterosexual men, and women, for that matter. But the evidence has shown that we can now assess whether blood is contaminated assess whether blood is contaminated a lot better than we could of years ago. So i think it is a great step forward but it still frustrates me that there is this three much probation period. And are you aware of gay men saying that they want to be able to give blood . Is this quite a live issue . Absolutely, pink news readers tell us all the time they think this is unfair. We had that Manchester Bombing of years ago and afterwards there was a shortage of it few types of blood, which they put out a request for and they were 93v put out a request for and they were gay men in manchester wanting to go out and donate blood and they were unable to, people with the right blood type. I think that is really frustrating, the idea that when we have shortages of certain types of blood, that sexual, responsible adults, who take their sexuality seriously, are being rejected because of their Sexual Orientation andi because of their Sexual Orientation and i hope that although progressing to three months is good, we will have no period at all. And there is another report coming out which seems to suggest that changing seems to Suggestmthatchamgi Mg is something that in future agenda is something that in future people will be able to choose for themselves. Again, explain what might be involved, and what you think about. So the moment, it if somebody wants to change their gender legally they have to wait to make years, they have to go through a series of tests, and they have to see a psychotherapist to have counselling about that before they are allowed to do it. So what justine greening, the Equalities Minister, has said is that if people say they are a different gender to the one they were previously assigned, they will be able to do that without going through that two year process. And i think that is a great step forward. It reminds me of not long ago when people would say toa not long ago when people would say to a gay person, it is a choice, you have chosen to be like this, why cant you choose Something Else . And gender isjust the cant you choose Something Else . And gender is just the same. Some people are born appearing mail, and always identifies a woman, and i think it isa identifies a woman, and i think it is a great thing about britain that people will be able to identify that gender without having to go through all sorts of deeply personal test that make feel uncomfortable. The Car Giant Volkswagen has told the bbc that it wont pay any compensation to transport for london, even though thousands of their vehicles were fitted with devices designed to cheat emissions tests. Tfl claim volkswagon should pay millions in lost revenue for the Congestion Charge, but vw says no. Here is claudia liza armah. It is the mayors war on londons air pollution, which he is now waging with the biggest carmaker in the world. Sadiq khan wants volkswagen to pay £2. 5 million in what he says is Congestion Charge fees in the wake of the emissions scandal. However, vw has said it will not be paying a single penny, something the mayor is furious about. The behaviour of volkswagen has been disgraceful. Firstly, they cheated, and secondly the lack of compression and humility from the manager of volkswagen. They should be compensating londoners for the money they have lost by the Congestion Charge. 80,000 londoners bought vehicles fitted with the cheap devices but vw claims that even without them the cars would still be exempt from the Congestion Charge. In a statement, vw told us. Imean, i mean, that just i mean, thatjust goes to show that volkswagen are not taking this seriously, and you know, i think people should be. You know, really look at what volkswagen are doing here. You know, their sense of Corporate Social Responsibility is neil. You know, it is extraordinary. Nil. With 9000 deaths in the capital linked each year to pollution, the battle for the mayor is farfrom pollution, the battle for the mayor is far from over. Pollution, the battle for the mayor is farfrom over. He is calling for the government to hold volkswagen to account and secure proper compensation. Now it is time for the weather. Good evening. We are going to try to bring a Brief Improvement to the start of this week, but it is not going to last. It hasnt been a Washout Weekend for everyone. North west scotland and Northern Ireland fared quite well, with some sunny spells, and there is a gorgeous view from cornwall this afternoon. Of course, not everybody had weather like that, and it is raining out there now across much of northern england, parts of the midlands, north wales. It is all pushing its way further south through the night and is the nike goes on there could be heavier bursts into east anglia. The rain pulls away from North West England gradually and western parts will be turning clearer. A few fog patches into Northern Ireland, Dropping Down Into Northern Ireland, Dropping Down Into single figures in the west. The area of low pressure bringing us showers over the weekend slowly pulling away but it is still a feature across parts of central and Eastern England for a time tomorrow. For wales in South West England we will start the day with sunny spells and keep them going through the day. For the midlands, for east anglia, South East England, stretching up to yorkshire and the north east, a lot of cloud around, some outbreaks of rain and a cool breeze to begin the day. North east england should be fine at this stage. Early fog clearing from Northern Ireland. The West Of Scotland seeing lots of sunshine. Rather cloudy, with low cloud in North East Scotland in the northern isles. An East West Split across the uk for monday. Full of the midlands and much of eastern and South East England you may see a lot of patchy rain. A cool Breeze Holding the temperatures to the mid to upper teens were some of us. Warm and sunny spells in the west. 2a to 25 degrees in glasgow. A late they shower in Western Scotland cannot be ruled out. There are hints for monday and going into tuesday that summer might be trying to fight back, once we get rid of the last of the cloud and rein in Eastern England on monday night. Tuesday most of us will be fine. Sunny spells developing, quite a cool breeze near north sea coast but elsewhere you will find those temperatures again creeping into the 20s. Temperatures again creeping into the 205. I temperatures again creeping into the 20s. I hinted earlier it will not last, and this is the reason. This area of low pressure will push the Weather Fronts across the uk on wednesday so even if you start dry on wednesday there will be rain moving through. The wind will pick up moving through. The wind will pick up as well. Temperatures will come down and beyond that the thursday and friday at it is a picture of sunshine and showers. Hints that summer may be trying to fight back but it is not going to last this week. It is still up and down, it is still changeable, briefly dry and warmer at the start of the week, but you saw what that low pressure will do. Wet and windy for wednesday, sunshine and showers for thursday and friday. If you are searching for summer it is on the bbc weather website
