Have arrived on the island over the past three days. Thats more than lampedusas local population which is around 6 or7,000. Nearly 126. 000 migrants have arrived in italy so far this year, almost double the figure by the same date last year. Lets hear what Giorgia Meloni had to say. However, if somebody here in europe were to think that these Global Crisis that we are tackling and facing could be just solved within the italian borders, then it would be a very big, huge mistake on their side, because this massive flow of immigrants is something which requires the involvement and the responsibility by everybody to be tackled, because its going to affect certainly the border, the frontier countries, but it will soon also involve all of the other countries. So we are all involved in this. We are all involved in trying to tackle and deal with this situation. And therefore the presence of president von der leyen is a sign of awareness in this respect. The head of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen said that a joint reponse with italy will be put in place. Prime minister maloney and i are here today to offer a coordinated response by the italian and european authorities. I would response by the italian and european authorities. Iwould be response by the italian and european authorities. I would be very clear. We have an obligation as part of the international community. We have fulfilled it in the past, and we will do so today and in the future. But we will decide who comes to the European Union and under what circumstances, and not the smugglers and traffickers. Listening to this is our correspondent danny aeberhard. Dining, this isnt a new issue, of course the severity, the scale of its perhaps its a bit different, theissue its perhaps its a bit different, the issue of immigration has been raised before. How much of what she saysis raised before. How much of what she says is new before . fix, raised before. How much of what she says is new before . A, lot raised before. How much of what she says is new before . Says is new before . A lot of what she was saying says is new before . A lot of what she was saying was says is new before . A lot of what she was saying was establish she was saying was establish positions by the European Commission. The European Union has been struggling with migration for a number of years. If a member back in 2015, more than a million migrants came to the European Union. The number we are seeing this year are way down from that, but nevertheless, the sheer number of people that have arrived on lampedusa this week is startling. 0ne International Organisation official has said it is unprecedented. Even if the wider picture is not as serious as 2015. What were seeing is Ursula Von Der Leyen offering immediate assistance to deal with the crisis. She is offering things like help from centex, that yous Border Agency in registering migrants, taking their fingerprints and also transferring to other parts of italy, which has been going on all week. She is also offering solidarity from the Level Offering solidarity from the level of trying to encourage other European Union countries to take migrants from italy voluntarily and relocate them in their states. She is proposing wider, longer term Structural Reforms as well. These are much more complicated and difficult to deal with. One thing she said there, dealing with people smugglers and trying to Assert Control Over who comes to the European Union is another thing entirely to actually do that. For example, some people suggest that some of the people smugglers are elite in countries such as libya where there is a weak central governance. Dealing with criminal groups. Governance. Dealing with criminal urou s. , governance. Dealing with criminal urous. ,. ,. , groups. One of the points that are still one of groups. One of the points that are still one of the groups. One of the points that are still one of the line groups. One of the points that are still one of the line made groups. One of the points that are still one of the line made in groups. One of the points that are still one of the line made in her i still one of the line made in her ten point action plan was stepping up ten point action plan was stepping up the supports to migrate to return to their origin country. That seems like a straightforward step, if they are not eligible. 0ne like a straightforward step, if they are not eligible. One of the reporters after made that point, why are you acting now . This is something we have raised before. Sometimes these things are difficult to roll out across the block. It was interesting on the point of returns, the European Union is trying to establish a standardised procedure whereby their Asylum Applications and returns are dealt with within six months. That, up to now, is a very unrealistic timescale, because often the systems are overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who apply for them and the lack of funding and the bureaucracy involved in those decisions also, of course, Asylum Seekers trying to challenge that in the courts. There was another thing that i would like to point out. Georgia maloney talked about a situation whereby we need common solutions. Parts of the European Union are trying to find solutions and other ideological solutions are trying to dismantle. She is nodding towards a division of parts of Western Europe that are ready to accept relocations of migrants, and Eastern European such as poland and hungary where that is absolutely not the case. The European Union has tried to establish a structure whereby some countries will agree voluntarily to accept relocations, but others will pay instead of accepting relocating migrants. That system hasnt been thought through, there is meant to be in negotiations later today. The European Commission hopes this will be up and running by next year, but it takes longer than these aims and objectives outline. At one point, he lost his place and several times in the second half of the show he was leaping through note he brought with him on stage. At the end of the performance, fans give him a Standing Ovation which lasted several minutes. He has several performances scheduled in the coming weeks and months, but with such serious allegations facing him, they will be Question Marks about whether they will be able to go ahead. Last niaht, they will be able to go ahead. Last night. Using they will be able to go ahead. Last night, using stand up comedy, give us a background of his career . He has us a background of his career . He has been a high profile figure in the world of entertainment for the last 22 years or so, cutting success but also controversy. A team sent by the Libyan Government based in tripoli has assessed that around a quarter of the buildings in derna were destroyed or damaged by the wall of water that ripped through the city. At least 891 buildings have been destroyed , with a further 211 buildings partially damaged and 398 others submerged in mud. The un says 11,300 people are now known to have died in the city , but thousands are still missing. Live now to our middle east correspondent lina sinjab. They need a lot of aid, they need a lot of Emergency Rescuers to plot the bodies, but also more than 30,000 people are now homeless. They need shelter, food, clean water. So the demand is quite high. Probably, some of the rescuers are slow to get in, mainly because of infrastructure conditions. We know at least two ships docked at the Port Of Derna also found it really difficult to off load because of the conditions off load because of the conditions of the port that is covered in mud and debris. The situation in the street of derna, there is mud and rubble everywhere. Its quite a difficult situation, its like an earthquake effect. A lot of countries stepped in, but not compared to the demand that is being assessed on a day in, day out basis. We have been looking at this short and medium term with infrastructure challenges, and of course the aid efforts now, with humanitarian efforts now, with humanitarian efforts in folding, what is likely to be little long term impact of this, given libya has already had quite a bit of turmoil in the governments since the overthrow of Colonel Gaddafi . Colonel gaddafi . Everyone is challenging Colonel Gaddafi . Everyone is challenging each Colonel Gaddafi . Everyone is challenging each other Colonel Gaddafi . Everyone is challenging each other in Colonel Gaddafi . Everyone is challenging each other in a i Colonel Gaddafi . Everyone is l challenging each other in a war against power. This is a national catastrophe, people in derna and in the east are blaming the government, they have received no warning, complaining that cracks in the dams and the government did not respond. Its hard to see that there would be more inefficiency going forward. We have seen the Prime Minister of the eastern government going to derna, promising to rebuild the whole port, promising to rebuild the whole port, promising to rebuild the whole port, promising to open an investigation. It only fuelled anger in people. They are trying to bury the bodies of the level of dance, or even looking for them. In this part of the world where there are dictatorship, no corruption,. It had to see the public accepting the failure of the government going forward. The north Korean Leader kim jong un has left russia after an extended visit to the countrys far east region. The sea ice surrounding antarctica is well below any previous recorded winter level, satellite data shows, a worrying new benchmark for a region that once seemed resistant to Global Warming. This map image shows the typical extent of sea ice at this time of year, specifically on the 14th of september. Thats the yellow dotted line, but the actual extent of ice is much less than the median. And as we head into the antarctic summer, much of he existing ice will continue to melt. If you want to get in touch about any of the stories, get in touch on twitter. Hello. Today marks a change in weather type. The heat and humidity that weve had recently, particularly in the south, will get cleared away and well see a bit of a Thundery Breakdown in the weather as well. So a chance of thundery downpours today, particularly towards the south and the west. Some sunshine around further north and east across the uk at times, but weve got on the Satellite Image low pressure, this clumpy cloud to the south, drifting its way slowly northwards. Weve also got a Weather Front thats moving in from the west, too. So some rain through the rest of the day for parts of Northern Ireland, western scotland. Some heavy showers, though, for wales and southern england. Theyve already been producing thunderstorms and they will continue to do so as we head into the afternoon. So thunderstorms possible through parts of central wales, all the way down towards the likes of essex, for instance, for the middle of the afternoon and a rash of more heavy showers and thunderstorms return from the south later on. So temperatures still up to about 23 degrees for the Channel Islands today, not the 28 that we had yesterday in the south east, but itll still feel quite muggy, whereas further north, were typically looking at the mid to high teens. Through into the evening hours, then this area of heavy showers and thunderstorms continues to drift north across Northern Ireland, Northern England into scotland as well. And then further heavy showers return to parts of southern and Eastern England as well. And more rain works in from the west. So i think wherever you are, expect some outbreaks of rain and some fairly blustery winds developing at times too, as we move through into monday morning. So mondays weather dominated by a couple of Weather Fronts, shifting their way from west to east, introducing that cooler, fresher but brighter air for Northern Ireland during the morning with a rash of showers. But we start the day with rain for scotland, through Central Parts of england, Clearing Eastwards as that fresher and brighter air moves across the uk during the afternoon. But still some heavy showers to be seen. It will feel different, though, it wont feel as hot and humid in the south as it has done recently. Temperatures 13 to 20 Degrees North to south. Into tuesday, and the next area of low pressure lines up here in the atlantic. Quite a lot of isobars on that, particularly towards the south, showing us its going to be a windy sort of day with some outbreaks of rain, most likely for Northern Ireland, wales, Northern England as well. Shifting into scotland later in the day. Something a little bit brighter, perhaps developing further south, but temperatures much more typical of the time of year, 1a to 19 for most of us. And things stay fairly unsettled over the next few days. Sunny spells blustery showers. All in all, a fairly autumnal outlook. Bye bye. Now on bbc news political thinking with nick robinson. All too often, people in public life choose not to use their power in the interests of the powerless, but rather to serve themselves or to protect the institution to which they belong. That is the verdict of my guest on political thinking this week. The former Prime Minister, theresa may. It is a quote from her new book, which is not a blow by blow account of three turbulent years in downing street. It is instead an argument, an argument that too often in britain we see, in the words of the title, the abuse of power. Theresa may. Welcome to political thinking. Thank you forjoining us. Very good to join you. Were you not tempted at all to write a book full ofjuicy indiscretions, attacks on your enemies and Self Justification . No, not really, actually, i have to say. I mean, the trouble is, im not that great a fan of political memoirs. And i think often. Well, ill either be one of two things, wont they . They will be full of juicy, juicy bits and pieces, or theyll be just very straight and often quite bland in a sense. But i wanted to get, as you say, get an argument over, because id seen certain issues as both Home Secretary and Prime Minister that i felt i wanted to draw
