and the european union. it accounts for 85% of global economic output and two—thirds of its population. it's a key forum for international issues — but there are deep divisions over some of these, like the war in ukraine. one of the first leaders to arrive has been the british prime minister rishi sunak, whose indian heritage will attract extra attention. the bbc*s south asia correspondent samira hussain reports. so the very eagerly awaited of rishi sunak, the british pm has happened. yes, he has arrived just a little while ago and when he arrived he was drated with dancers, there was the british high commissioner along with other indian dignitary, including the minister of state. before he gone on the plait he tweeted he is heading to the 620 summit and mate it clear what his three priorities are, stabilising the global economy, building international relationships, and supporting the most vulnerable but what he also mentioned, was the fact that russia's leader is not going to be here, and that is, and he reiterated the fact they are going to be showing strong support for ukraine. and of course, he will, that may work against his agenda with india, which is to set up a trade deal, because india has been reluctant to show full support for ukraine. . absolutely, and i think there is is a few threads that he are happening with regards to the uk, and with india, of course, when the two leaders meet tomorrow, they will certainly be talking about the trade deal. remember, of course, that the two sides were hoping to eco—out a trade deal before the 620 summit but that didn't happen, so that will be part of discussion between the meeting between prime minister modi and prime minister sunak tomorrow. the other part of it is how to have a joint statement condemning russia's actions in ukraine, of course there are some 620 members that have been reruck ant, india being one of them. there are real, there is a real push here by the indian government, to try and eek out some sort ofjoint statement and there are remores that the language with regards to the ukraine war may be softening but as of great is still rumours. —— as of yet. clearly the absence of reputation from china and russia means that from, and particularly china in this context, although the premier is due to arrive, suggests that it really takes some of the energy, some of to momentum away from this, because china's economy is so important. from this, because china's economy is so important-— is so important. yes, no, and that is so important. yes, no, and that is absolutely _ is so important. yes, no, and that is absolutely true, _ is so important. yes, no, and that is absolutely true, and _ is so important. yes, no, and that is absolutely true, and i _ is so important. yes, no, and that is absolutely true, and i think- is so important. yes, no, and that is absolutely true, and i think that was sort of the feeling, you know when it comes to russia's president vladimir putin not attending, of course there are issues there, the, his arrest warrant issued by the international criminal court, so there were some concerns with regards to him coming here, although they did say his schedule is frankly too busy, with president xi not coming, relations between india and china right now are fraught, they have been getting quite testy over the last few years and recently, there was a diplomatic incident in which the chinese government released the new map and put parliament of the, indian territory as included it as part of china. that is being seen by some people as the reason for the snub, the strong diplomatic reaction from india, as to why china isn't going to be appearing here.— to why china isn't going to be appearing here. to why china isn't going to be a- ”earin here. ., ~ ,, , . appearing here. thank you very much for “oininu appearing here. thank you very much forjoining us- — the big question is how to find common ground.— start arriving and we i the leaders do start arriving and we are expecting prime minister of the uk, rishi sunak, in india, shortly, we are expecting the us president president biden later, this evening, and 16 of 20 leaders also be here, the big question on everyone's mind really will be can they forge a joint declaration which is right now a an impasse over ukraine. it is now the leaders turn to try, as they did in indonesia, to find some language they can all be comfortable with. we have to bear in mind this is taking place n that context, in india, which is itself one could argue, sitting on the fence.— sitting on the fence. well, certainly. _ sitting on the fence. well, certainly, but _ sitting on the fence. well, certainly, but you - sitting on the fence. well, certainly, but you know, l sitting on the fence. well, - certainly, but you know, there have been things that india has tried to do over the last year, one of the, one of the sort of priorities for india, the sherpas have been saying is to ensure that the ukraine war doesn't take over the entire centre stage of the 620, so you know, the pitch for the global, so look at development issue, the pitch for the african union membership, these are new initiatives by the indian government to try and say, look, the 620 is an economic platform, we don't want it run by this geopolitical issue, however in the sherpa meetings we have seen very little common ground between the two sides and remember, the indonesian president travels to moscow e and to kyiv to try and convince the two sides of the need for the 620 to come to some kind of arrangement. he also inviteded the president of ukraine zelensky to address the 620 at one point. so far, india has not agreed to president zelensky*s request to be represented or you know, appear virtually at the indian summit, and neither has prime minister modi made an effort to go to moscow or kyiv. instead, holding the position that india's position is for diplomacy and dialogue, that is for diplomacy and dialogue, that is what we want to sheer, we want everyone to move towards that middle ground. it is a tricky thing but it is one that india has been trying to run for the last year. let is one that india has been trying to run for the last year.— run for the last year. let us turn to trade, — run for the last year. let us turn to trade, all-important - run for the last year. let us turn i to trade, all-important particularly to trade, all—important particularly at the moment, given the global downturn, and inflation worries and so on, rishi sunak would very much like to strike a deal with india but so far, that ambition has proved elusive. ., , so far, that ambition has proved elusive. . , ., , ., elusive. that is right and it him - elusive. that is right and it is not just rishi sunak, before him we | elusive. that is right and it is not - just rishi sunak, before him we have seen the ft in negotiations largely from what looked like near success to not coming through, everyone under prime minister liz truss's time a yearago, under prime minister liz truss's time a year ago, in fact they seemed to be the bring of announcing it when it had its own domestic issue, what we are hearing that both sides have taken a more considered position on what kind of agreement they want, and of course, the big sticking point are the indian desire for much more leniency when it comes to service, to visa, to immigration, the british desire for mortar riffs removed and for access, trade access to a number of indian areas but what we are hearing more and more is that deal will not be done until both sides are satisfied, so they won't paper over the cracks, prime minister sunak to paper over the cracks, prime minister sunakto an paper over the cracks, prime minister sunak to an indian news agency said we are still some way away, i presume that means that barring any kind of breakthrough when the two men get into am radio and i understand they are going to meet on saturday, for a bilateral meeting, barring a breakthrough in a meeting, barring a breakthrough in a meeting it looks like the fta will be a bit away. there are others in the queue watching them, so if it goes through, australia is looking to go ahead as well and da is also in that. let's turn to the uk, and the search for a terrorism suspect who escaped a london prison has entered a third day. police have refused to rule out the possibility that daniel khalife left the country after his escape on wednesday. he was awaiting trial on charges including collecting information useful to an enemy state. uk justice secretary, alex chalk, says he wants the findings of an investigation into the indicent by the end of the week. 0ur news reporter simon jones had more on this. the government says it wants answers and its commissioned no fewer than five separate investigations and reports into what happened. now, the first two of those are going to examine the events that took place on wednesday morning, how was daniel khalife able to get out of this jail ljy khalife able to get out of this jail by clinging to the bottom after food delivery truck, that is one line of investigation. they also want to know why he was in this prison, a category b prison and not a more secure category a prison, given the seriousness of the charges that he was facing, and those two initial investigations are due report back to the justice secretary investigations are due report back to thejustice secretary by the weekend, so the findings could come as soon as today or perhaps tomorrow. it is unclear how much information the government will then release to the public. as regards the other investigations and reviews, there is going to be an independent overarching investigation into what happening, independent of the prison service, and also, two reviews looking generally about where terror prisoners are held, and also, another review looking at all the prisoners here in wandsworth to see if they are in the right level of jail, in terms of security. so a lot for the investigators to get their teeth into and the government wanting answers quickly. simon, it has been pointed out that daniel khalife is a former soldier, so he may be skilled in this context, in a way that other people might not be, but also there's is a possibility that has been hinted at he may have been helped in his escape. he may have been helped in his esca e. , he may have been helped in his escae. , . , escape. yes, the police say they can't rule _ escape. yes, the police say they can't rule out — escape. yes, the police say they can't rule out the _ escape. yes, the police say they can't rule out the possibility - escape. yes, the police say theyj can't rule out the possibility that he might have had some help, inside the prison, to carry out this escape and also now that he has managed to break free he and also now that he has managed to breakfree he might be and also now that he has managed to break free he might be getting help from someone or people on the outside. the police also say they can't rule out the possibility that he has already fled the country. now we know increased checks are taking place, places like eurotunnel for the channel tunnel and the port of dover, so all cars are being individually searched, so drivers are having to get out their car, open the boot to check someone isn't stowing away like daniel khalife in theory he could be doing, given he has a history of hiding in or at least under vehicle, so questions about what might have happened. in some ways the police are talking up his military past, they say he has a degree of sophistication and ingenuity and may help him avoid the capture of police but it mean be seen as a bit of an eggs peninsula nation for the metropolitan police about why there is little progress in this case more than two days after he escaped from the prison here. one of former us president donald trump's trade advisers has been found guilty on two counts of criminal contempt of congress in a federal trial on thursday. peter navarro was found in contempt for refusing to co—operate with an inquiry into the january sixth attack on the us capitol. each count carries a maximum of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. 0ur correspondent 6ary 0'donoghue has more. it was an incredibly short trial, lasting just two days, and the jury took just about six hours to come to its guilty verdict on both charges. now those charges are contempt of congress, and that is because peter navarro failed to comply with a congressional subpoena from the january 6th committee to produce documents and to appear to give testimony. what they wanted to hear about was something called the green bay sweep, which was peter navarro's own name for a plan to overturn the election results, in congress, onjanuary 6th. now he said he didn't have to give them the documents or appear because it was all covered by executive privilege, but the judge threw out that defence before the trial even started, so he was unable to run that, and really offered no defence in terms of his own case. after the court concluded, he appeared and said he would appeal the conviction. he could face up to a year in prison on each of the charges, and up to a $100,000 fine. we are expecting him to be sentenced in january. he is the second trump adviser to be charged on contempt of congress. steve bannon, of course, got four months for the same charges, but he is still at liberty because his appeal is pending. but here we are, once again, the president's men going to court and getting convicted. the american actor danny masterson has been sentenced to at least 30 years in prison for raping two women. masterson is best known for his starring role in that 70s show. both victims had been members of the scientology cult, and claim officials had discouraged them from contacting law enforcement about crimes committed by a fellow cult member. scientologists deny they had tried to silence the complaints. around the world and across the uk. this is bbc news. tell us? tania, | this sub variant of omicron, known this sub variant of 0micron, known as ba.286 has been detected in various countries including the us, denmark france and south africa and the uk, we had an up update a short time ago from the uk health security agency, on what they had discovered. last week they said they had found three cases of this variant, and they were watching it closely, as in fact are all leading health organisations of, now they are reporting there are 3a cases, and 28 of them were in one single care home. now, on the face of it that may be a bit concerning but the point being made is that they have no evidence, the health authorities at the moment, this sub variant is more transmissable than what has gone before or it causes more serious illness, they are having to just monitor things and they make the point because testing in care homes is, there is probably more going on given the vulnerability of the population there, that it is more likely you will pick up an outbreak in a care home or in that school, because of the level of monitoring there. so, the argument is there is nothing particularly to be concerned about at the moment, they are not saying this is a variant of concern, but they are looking air accident investigator quite closely and they are saying that the latest data really shows from their point of view, there is community transmission now, it is not simply case of people who are travelled elsewhere in the uk, and at this stage we don't know whether any of those cases have resulted in very serious illness, though of the 34 very serious illness, though of the 3a five needed hospital treatment. it is a reminder though, that the problem hasn't gone away? exactly and there are _ problem hasn't gone away? exactly and by islamist militants. military authorities say 64 people were killed in two separate attacks in the northeast of the country. two separate assaults targeted a boat on the niger river in the northern 6ao region, and a military camp at bamba — 50 militants are also thought to have also been killed. the militaryjunta in 6abon has appointed an opposition leader as interim prime minister following last month's coup. raymond ndong sima stood against the ousted president, ali bongo, in recent elections. he had previously served in the 6abonese government in a number of roles, including that of prime minister. 0ur correspondent thomas naadi is in 6abon. the release of ousted president ali bongo has been met with mixed reactions in this country, with some calling for him to face justice on corruption charges. the junta, in a statement read out on television, said that mr bongo was free to travel abroad for medical care. his likely destination will be morocco, because he previously travelled to that country to receive treatment for the stroke he suffered five years ago. he also enjoys close ties with the moroccan royal family and reportedly owns a villa in the palm 6rove area of marrakesh. mr bongo's release follows pressure from a central african regional bloc eccas. he was ousted shortly after being declared the winner of presidential elections last week. the mood in the country remains calm and stable, but many are uncertain about the future, as general nguema has not indicated when he plans to return the country to civilian rule. thomas naadi, bbc news, 6abon. north korea claims to have launched its first submarine capable of carrying out an underwater nuclear attack — though there's no evidence yet of its operational ability. these pictures were released by north korean state media. the vessel was reportedly unveiled in a ceremony on wednesday, presided over by the country's leader kimjong—un. a report in state media said the submarine strengthened the country's nuclear deterrent by "leaps and bounds". the new boss of a j—pop agency disgraced by the extensive sexual abuse committed by its late founder johnny kita—gawa has also been accused of sexually assaulting young boys. noriyuki higashiyama he could not remember reported acts which he said may or may not have occurred. he was named the new boss ofjohnny and associates afterjulie fujishima resigned over her uncle's offences. jonny kitigawa was the head ofjapan*s biggest pop talent agency until his death four years ago. ofjapan*s biggest pop talent agency he was arguably the most influential figure injapan*s entertainment industry and his talent company has held a near—monopoly onjapanese boy bands for decades. i spoke with our correspondent in tokyo, shaimaa khalil — who outlined how these allegations against noriyuki higashiyama came out. noriyuki higashiyama was asked about sexual allegations against him in yesterday's press conference, where he was announced as the new president ofjohnny and associates talent agency. these allegations came out in a book in 2005, and one of the reporters yesterday asked him whether he allegedly inappropriately exposed himself and touched young boys. he said he didn't remember. he said it may have happened, it may not. and that he said, "i have trouble remembering." he also added that he may have been stricter on young performers and that he may have done things in his teens and 20s that he wouldn't do now. this is not an outright no. it is not a confirmation. as it stands, though, we have a new ceo of a company that is in the midst of japan's biggest sexual abuse scandal, himself now facing allegations of sexual abuse, which begs the question, what has actually changed in that agency? the man at the top or the person at the helm may have changed, but what about structural change and protecting the talent that comes in? julie fujishima stepped down as the ceo. she's the niece of the late johnny kitagawa, but she owns 100% of the shares. she will also stay on as representative director, essentially taking care of the money, taking care of compensation for the victims. and again, many question marks on whether she's actually left the building, left the company. there's also one big thing that remains unchanged, which is the name of the company, johnny and associates. for decades, this has been a name that was synonymous with talent, with fame, withj—pop and pop culture. but now it is associated with a man and a brand that are in the midst of the worst sexual abuse scandal. and many victims and many survivors have actually commented today when they were reacting to the press conference that not only is it bad for business, it is quite insulting to the hundreds and hundreds of victims and what they went through in that talent agency. a chinese coffee chain which began selling latte drinks infused with a famous brand of chinese rice liquor has ordered an emergency restock of supplies, mist and fog has started to clear away and the clouds are clearing, too. but we've had a lovely start to the day, really, despite the high level cloud in the sky, some sunny spells there and will continue with lots of sunshine as we go into the afternoon. still, though, some of that coastal mist and fog just right on the north sea coast, it could be a little bit cooler here, but widely, once again, temperatures getting up into the mid to the high 20s, 32 possible in the south east of england during this afternoon. as we go through tonight, still that mist and fog in the north sea is drifting away, though itjust lingers on across the far north east of scotland for a time. showers start to work their way into the far north in the west. but again, it's going to be another warm and muggy nights. temperatures no lower than about 1a to 18 degrees celsius. so we start off on saturday morning. then with some sunshine across many areas, it does turn more unsettled across the north west of scotland, some showers working their way in here. could see the odd showerjust popping up around the pennines. but for most, again, a dry and a sunny afternoon. temperatures widely into the mid to high 20s, but fresher in the far north and west, 18 degrees here. we could reach 33 celsius tomorrow afternoon. that would make it the hottest day of the year with those temperatures going above 32.6 degrees that we saw yesterday. saturday likely to be the heat, the peak of the heat wave from sunday. temperatures will start to come down. we start to pick up a few more showers across england and wales. some of those could be heavy, perhaps even a bit thundery during the afternoon. still fairly unsettled in the far north west and temperatures here, 1a, 15 celsius. now, it won't be as hot, but it's still going to be hot in the southeast with temperatures still up to about 30 celsius into next week. this cold front moves south and eastward and as the name suggests, it brings in cooler air and more unsettled conditions. so there'll be some showers. but look at the air mass. you can see here the oranges being replaced by the yellows, even blues across the far north of scotland. just indicative of those temperatures coming down as we go through the week. so it's from tuesday really that we'll see those temperatures more typical for september 17 to 22 degrees. it stays that way for the rest of the week with further showers at times. bye bye. this is bbc news, the headlines... king charles iii praises his mother's life as one of devoted service in an audio
