Hard to know at this stage is how many people have been involved in this. We have seen figures from the red crescent and the red cross, we have seen figures from the United Nations and from ocha what we know is that many thousands of people were affected by this. And we note that the slow speed of managing to recover many of those victims contributes to some of the difficulties in actually identifying a clear death toll. Because many of those victims were swept out to sea and we have seen, very sadly, those bodies day after day beginning to wash ashore. But also recovery teams working in derna are digging through the high piles of mud and silt people are buried in, going through buildings that have been destroyed. All of those things together make it very difficult to know for quite some time exactly how many people were involved in this and exactly who they were. Junior doctors are joining consultants on strikes across england. Its part of the first Everjoint Strike of nhs staff. Government ministers have called the co ordinated strike callous and calculated. The industrial action marks an escalation in an ongoing dispute over pay. Our Health Correspondent has the latest from central london. A lot of disruption to patients, Tens Of Thousands of appointments have been cancelled, what the strike means for patients today is that pretty much all planned or routine care, hip operations, knee replacements, everything is pretty much come to a halt. Emergency care will continue, so, those needing Emergency Care can call 999 or come to a e as usual, it is like Christmas Day cover, but of course more than one Christmas Day this week, the consultants were out yesterday and they continue to stay on strike until seven oclock tomorrow morning. Thejunior on strike until seven oclock tomorrow morning. The Junior Doctors joining them today, unprecedented in the nhs, they will continue to strike until saturday morning. Im joined by one of the Junior Doctors, why have you come out here today and what is it like to be joined why have you come out here today and what is it like to bejoined by why have you come out here today and what is it like to be joined by the consultants on this historic day . We are here to ask for fair pay for the skills that we bring and this is unprecedented, and it feels very significant, nobody takes it likely to be on strike and we are here because were worried, we are here standing together to ask for more notjust for standing together to ask for more not just for ourselves standing together to ask for more notjust for ourselves but standing together to ask for more not just for ourselves but for our patients and for the nhs. find not just for ourselves but for our patients and for the nhs. And what is it like in the patients and for the nhs. And what is it like in the hospital patients and for the nhs. And what is it like in the hospital now, patients and for the nhs. And what is it like in the hospital now, what i is it like in the hospital now, what is it like in the hospital now, what is morale like . Because this is the sixth right forJunior Doctors . Sixth right for Junior Doctors . Absolutely. Sixth right forJunior Doctors . Absolutely. Its very frustrating. I dont want to be here, i want to be in there looking after my patient, gaining skills, but i feel that we have to be here because im notjust thinking about the patient who, unfortunately, will be impacted this week, but im thinking about the paycheque that i want to look after in the coming weeks, months and years of my career. To in the coming weeks, months and years of my career. In the coming weeks, months and years of my career. To be oined by the consultants, years of my career. To be oined by the consultants, to have years of my career. To be joined by the consultants, to have you years of my career. To be joined by the consultants, to have you all. Years of my career. To be joined by| the consultants, to have you all out here, pretty much no doctors, very few doctors inside covering the wards, what does that feel like . 50. Wards, what does that feel like . So, i wouldnt be wards, what does that feel like . So, i wouldnt be out here wards, what does that feel like . S513, i wouldnt be out here if i felt it was unsafe in the hospital today for patients. So, i know that our trust has done a lot of work in ensuring that things are safe, but we absolutely need to have an impact because we need to make the government Pay Attention because we want the strike to end, we want to come to a resolution. Come to a resolution. Thanks very much. Come to a resolution. Thanks very much we come to a resolution. Thanks very much we are come to a resolution. Thanks very much. We are hearing come to a resolution. Thanks very much. We are hearing about come to a resolution. Thanks very| much. We are hearing about some talks behind the scenes, very little between the Health Secretary and the doctors publicly but some talks we know from consultants yesterday behind the scenes that could be the start of a negotiation. Not official, but they hope that that could lead to something, otherwise more strikes are planned from early october, 2nd Of October to the 4th of october, and a rally is planned then as well at the conservative party conference. Now back to you. I just wanted to ask you about Waiting Lists because they are extremely high at the moment, 7. 6 million think at the last count, what impact does each day of these strikes have on those Waiting Lists . On those Waiting Lists . Well, youre riaht, on those Waiting Lists . Well, youre right. Nearly on those Waiting Lists . Well, youre right. Nearly 77 on those Waiting Lists . Well, youre right, nearly 7. 7 million, on those Waiting Lists . Well, youre right, nearly 7. 7 million, the right, nearly 7. 7 million, the strikes have caused real blooms, nearly a million Outpatient Appointments cancelled as a result, and that doesnt include this week of strikes, so that is a real problem for the hospitals and a problem for the hospitals and a problem for the Prime Minister, of course, who wants to get those Waiting Lists down, made a promise in fact, i think he has realised thatis in fact, i think he has realised that is not going to happen, rishi sunak is blaming the doctors for that, but of course the doctors and the hospitals will tell you that that waiting list was going up well before the pandemic, up to 4 million, up to over 6 million after the pandemic, so they say dont blame us for the strikes causing that waiting list increase. In fact they say what the government is doing is attacking the very people who the government needs to get that waiting list down, and these strikes are only causing more problems for those patience. Of course we talk about numbers but every single number is a patient potentially in pain. Number is a patient potentially in ain. ~ ,. ~ number is a patient potentially in ain,. ,. , ~. , pain. We will be talking to a consultant pain. We will be talking to a Consultant Doctor pain. We will be talking to a Consultant Doctor very pain. We will be talking to a i Consultant Doctor very shortly pain. We will be talking to a Consultant Doctor very shortly for more on this story. Ukraines president Volodymyr Zelensky has made a passionate speech to the United Nations, warning that a Nuclear Armed russia must be stopped from pushing the world to the final war. In his first speech in person at the Un General Assembly since russias invasion of his country, mr zelensky said moscow had no right to hold nuclear weapons. Our Diplomatic Correspondent James Landale reports from new york. For president zelensky, these chaotic corridors of the United Nations are his front line. The place where he must come to twist arms, call in favours and change minds. The task for him and his team notjust to encourage allies but also to win the hearts and minds of those still sitting on their hands. We have to stop it. We must act united to defeat the aggressor. For the first time in modern history, we have real chance to end the aggression on the terms of the nation which was attacked. Running the gauntlet of the media, hes going from meeting to meeting, telling leaders and diplomats the outcome of the war matters. Notjust to ukraine but everyone. And thats no easy task. But you always look pretty. Thank you so much. For all the charm, south africas president is still unwilling to condemn russias invasion. So, today the focus will turn to the security council, the heart of the United Nations, that he will address for the first time, setting out more details of his peace plan. President zelensky doesnt really like this council, he doesnt think it has done enough to resist russian aggression, he cant understand why russia still has a seat around that table with a powerful veto but he knows its the key forum where he has to make his case and he gets a chance to look his russian enemy directly in the eye. And today that eye may belong to sergei lavrov, russias foreign minister unless he chooses to stay away until the time for his speech. Representing britain not the Prime Minister but his Deputy Oliver dowden, standing in his stead alongside the foreign secretary. So we need to send the message loud and clear that we have the resolve, we have the strategic patience, that we will do the right thing, until this is resolved. But that may take time, with more diplomacy at the un, and more fighting on the ground. James landale, bbc news, new york. Kal raustiala is from the university of california, Los Angeles Center for international relations. He explained the significance of the World Leaders who arent attending the meeting. Well, the only member of the permanent five of the security council, the original five members, present was President Biden today. And so, it is unusual, and unfortunate, but its not unprecedented, and while obviously some years you see more people, more World Leaders coming, other years, less, this isnt the highest number weve ever seen again, not unprecedented. There is a sort of gloomy mood, it appears, and the ukraine war has been the focus of much attention at the un but its not the only issue, and so, while the absence of those World Leaders is again something that no one really wants to see, at the same time, theres a lot of activity going forward. President biden in his speech spoke about many other aspects, and so i wouldnt view this as a disaster, its just again somewhat unfortunate. A man has gone on trial in a swiss court charged with the forced disappearance of three belarusian opposition figures 2a years ago. Yury garavsky was arrested after giving an interview in which he said he was part of a secret police hit squad which abducted and shot political rivals of belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko in 1999. Little was known about the fate of the disappeared until now. Our Eastern Europe correspondent Sarah Rainsford reports from st gallen in switzerland. Yury garavsky doesnt want the world to see his face, Afraid The Secrets hes sharing in this court could put his life in danger. Hes confessed to being part of a hit squad in belarus that made members of the opposition there disappear. Anatoly was my father. Valerias father was one of them. Anatoly krasouski was a businessman abducted with his politician friend 2a years ago. They were never seen again. They sing. On the latest anniversary, a small crowd gathered with valeria to remember. Many were recent arrivals in europe fleeing a new wave of repression back home. Valeria still has no grave to visit, just a tree planted in her fathers memory, and a lot of questions. You dont know, actually, is he alive, is he dead . If he is dead, what happened exactly, where is his body . You cannotjust close this chapter. Still im confronted with the disappearance of my father. And every time i have to talk about him, every time i have to think about him, ifeel very sad. And i guess thats normal. But i do want to feel lighter. Bell tolls. Her hopes are now riding on swissjustice. On this remote region, where Yury Garavsky turned up seeking political asylum. Its where hes now standing trial. In the 1990s, the men he has admitted abducting were prominent opponents of Alexander Lukashenko. Crowd chants. The authoritarian leader of belarus was often met by protests in those days. But the relatives demands for the truth were always blocked. But Yury Garavsky now says a Special Forces unit he belonged to was responsible. I tried asking him why he had turned whistleblower, but he refused even to catch my eye. Its like what is called. Years on, valeria hopes this trial can be a Starting Point in the search forjustice, not the end of it. Back then, it was already known what happened, and it was already known that all the ways lead to lukashenko. But yes, he remained in power, and he is in power still. You know . Its an awful crime. Bell rings. It is also a reminder that the crushing of dissent in belarus has deep and very dark roots. Sarah rainsford, bbc news, in switzerland. Co nsulta Nts Consultants and Junior Doctors in england are on the picket line togetherfor england are on the picket line together for the first time in the history of the nhs. The walkout by members of the British Medical Association marks an escalation of their pay dispute with the government. I am joined their pay dispute with the government. Iam joined now their pay dispute with the government. I am joined now by dr claudio paoloni, executive member of the Hospital Consultants and specialists association. Thank you for joining specialists association. Thank you forjoining us. This is the third walkout by consultants, the sixth by Junior Doctors, the government says that you have been offered a generous pay rise, and other members of the nhs have accepted their pay rises, why wont you, what is it that you want to . It rises, why wont you, what is it that you want to . Rises, why wont you, what is it that you want to . It is a sad state of affairs, that you want to . It is a sad state of affairs, isnt that you want to . It is a sad state of affairs, isnt it, that you want to . It is a sad state of affairs, isnt it, that that you want to . It is a sad state of affairs, isnt it, that we that you want to . It is a sad state of affairs, isnt it, that we have i of affairs, isnt it, that we have got to this point. It clearly isnt the right approach, it clearly isnt the right approach, it clearly isnt the right approach, it clearly isnt the right agreement that the government had decided to inform us and tell us is all they are going to, they are prepared, to offer us. It clearly isnt enough. What that is, is a distraction. The reason we have got to this point, where people are now feeling the need to strike, is for the future of the nhs. Its the recruitment and retention of the future nhs staff, and existing nhs staff, doctors, for us, we are representing doctors in this and it clearly isnt enough. They need to stop wasting time, they need to get around the table, it clearly isnt the last offer, the last and final offer, that is not a phrase coming from someone who is prepared to negotiate. This is clearly not the right approach to take. We just dont want, doctors dont want to be doing this. Dont want, doctors dont want to be doin this. ~. ,. , doing this. What is it that you want, doing this. What is it that you want. Where doing this. What is it that you want, where is doing this. What is it that you want, where is your doing this. What is it that you want, where is your red doing this. What is it that you want, where is your red line . J doing this. What is it that you want, where is your red line . We need to want, where is your red line . Need to negotiate, we need to get to the table. The reality is that there has been a pay erosion over the past 1012 has been a pay erosion over the past 10 12 years, it is resulting in 30 of medical students recently surveyed and having no intention of staying in the nhs, that is 30 . It is resulting in an exodus of staff, of doctors from the nhs to other countries that are paid and have much better terms and conditions. This is a Starting Point, we need to negotiate. The this is a Starting Point, we need to neuotiate. ,. , negotiate. The government have called a strike negotiate. The government have called a strike callous negotiate. The government have called a strike callous and called a strike callous and calculated, you dont need me to tell you that the nhs has got record Waiting Lists, 7. 7 Million People now, what impact is each day of strikes like this having on those Waiting Lists and on those people who need their operations and to be seen by a doctor . Seen by a doctor . Well, obviously it has an impact seen by a doctor . Well, obviously it has an impact but seen by a doctor . Well, obviously it has an impact but that seen by a doctor . Well, obviously it has an impact but that is seen by a doctor . Well, obviously it has an impact but that is actually i has an impact but that is actually disregarding the basis for why people are striking. They are striking to save the nhs, to reduce the Waiting Lists. The Waiting Lists have been going up since 2010, so it is notjust due to the industrial action, as was suggested last week. The Waiting Lists were already 11. 5 million before we even went into the covid pandemic, and writing. And if we dont address the problem, which is recruitment and retention of the staff, in the nhs, the Waiting Lists will only grow further. figs staff, in the nhs, the Waiting Lists will only grow further. Staff, in the nhs, the Waiting Lists will only grow further. As you say, the government will only grow further. As you say, the government at will only grow further. As you say, the government at the will only grow further. As you say, the government at the moment i will only grow further. As you say, i the government at the moment dont seem to be willing to move, labour, evenif seem to be willing to move, labour, even if they come into government at the next election, possibly in a year also, the next election, possibly in a yearalso, it the next election, possibly in a year also, it is not clear whether they would meet your pay demands, either, because they seem well in excess of what labour would be willing to pay, it seems that you are at an impasse at the moment . We reall are at an impasse at the moment . Really are, which is why we have got to start by actually talking, for the government to take the line that we wont talk with you, we are just going to give you this offer, is irresponsible, its actually irresponsible, its actually irresponsible and it is trying to enforce a law which they are also proposing, is actually again a misunderstanding of the issue, it is a distraction. Because the underlying issues, the reason people are striking, is to ensure that we have staff going forwards in the nhs. We currently have a Workforce Crisis and if we dont do something to address that, to address the exodus of nhs staff and to prevent the exodus of medical students who are currently training, then we have got a real problem with the nhs going forward, and that is what we are striking about. [30 going forward, and that is what we are striking about. Are striking about. Do you think it is time to start are striking about. Do you think it is time to start considering, are striking about. Do you think it is time to start considering, or i is time to start considering, or reconsidering, thinking about how the nhs is funded, a different funding model . Because the government has a pot of money, a huge amount of it goes towards the nhs as it is, and those resources are so stretched, do you think money needs to be coming from elsewhere . I think there definitely needs to be a complete re look at how the nhs is funded and how it proceeds going forwards. Unfortunately, it is always used as a political football, and that doesnt allow it to be planned for in a sustainable way. The population is growing, the demands on the nhs are growing. The population is ageing, the Health Demands are ageing and increasing, so, there has to be a re look. Yes, more money is found, of course, you can see that more money is ploughed into the nhs in terms of absolute figures, but is it the right amount . Is it the right amount that the services for the services that we are offering . Is it the right amount to provide for the needs . So there needs to be a cross party look with a long, sustained view on how the nhs works. The a long, sustained view on how the nhs worke a long, sustained view on how the nhs works. ,. ,. , nhs works. The government wants to introduce this nhs works. The government wants to introduce this minimum nhs works. The government wants to introduce this minimum service introduce this minimum Service Requirement for doctors, just explain what impact that could have . Well, again as i said earlier on i think this is a bit of a distraction distraction because the minimum service level, to quote within the consultation, is sunday holiday working, well, that is exactly what we are providing today, and that is what we are providing at weekends and on bank holidays. For us to say, if they are saying that is not, then thatis if they are saying that is not, then that is exactly what we are striking about, we dont have the workforce to currently sustain what we have now. So, forcing a law through is not going to solve the issue, if anything, it is more likely to drive people away. Idr anything, it is more likely to drive peeple away people away. Dr claudio paoloni, from the hospital people away. Dr claudio paoloni, from the Hospital Consultants i people away. Dr claudio paoloni,| from the Hospital Consultants and specialists association, thank you. An Ambulance Worker who was saved by his patient and a nurse after he suffered a Cardiac Arrest has thanked them for giving him another chance in life. Shaun mcbride suddenly collapsed while he was preparing to take 72 year old Tommy Stewart to hospital. Louise hosie went to meet them during their emotional reunion. Reunited with the man who helped to save his life. Tommy. Ambulance worker Shaun Mcbride has returned to glen odee hospital to see patient Tommy Stewart. The pensioner raised the alarm after shaun suffered a Cardiac Arrest. Youve got a good set of lungs on you. 0h, aye. Shaun had just strapped tommy into his ambulance, and was about to take him to an appointment in aberdeen when he became unwell. Basically, when i woke up i was told what happened. The first person i seen was my wife. Just seen the top of his head hard next to the wall. But there was no way of getting reaching the horn on the car or nothing, because im strapped in now. So ijust, next thing was, roar. Tommys repeated cries were eventually heard by a hospital worker. I shouted, get help, the drivers collapsed, and then she went, 0h, me and she ran inside and got help out. Hows it going . Im good, thanks, how are you . Nurse Freya Smith Nicol was on duty that day. I think immediately we kind i of thought it was going to be one of our patients just a patient because thatsjust kind of what you put two and two together kind of thing. And obviously, i didnt expect to see shaun there. Freya and her team gave shaun cpr for nearly half an hour. They used a defibrillator seven times as they waited for help to arrive. After spending time in intensive care, shaun pulled through. If it wasnt for tommy raising that alarm, er. And then the quick actions of freya and the team, er. I wouldnt be sitting here today as if donald trump wasnt the centre of enough controversy, there are calls for his Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame to be removed. Its already been destroyed twice and remade at a cost of thousands of dollars david willis reports. This is hollywood and every year millions of people come here to savour the sort of glamour and glitz that makes this place the entertainment capital of the world. One of their first stops is traditionally the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, which stretches east and west along Hollywood Boulevard for nearly a mile and a half and is made up of more than 2,500 stars, coral pink stars, embedded into the pavement. One of those stars belongs to donald trump. It was awarded to him for his work on the Television Show the apprentice but since he ran for president it has proved almost as controversial as he is. Latino advocacy groups demanded that it be removed after he was quoted as calling mexicans rapists and drug traffickers. And in recent years it has repeatedly been defaced and destroyed only to be repaired, despite the fact that City Officials here who generally have little regard for mr trump would rather see it removed. Earlier there were calls for another star that has constantly been vandalised, that of the comedian bill cosby, to be removed after he was accused of sex abuse. But the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which administers the walk of fame, continues to resist any such calls, saying that once a star is added, it is considered part of the historical fabric of hollywood. Well now, some are starting to wonder why, and there appear to be a number of quite complex reasons. Not least, Question Marks over whether the walk of fame actually constitutes a state landmark, thereby making it off limits for any sort of modification. And the concern that if you get rid of one star, then calls could mount for the destruction of several others. What about, for example, the Silent Movie Star fatty arbuckle, who has a star on the walk of fame . He was accused of raping and killing an actress only to be acquitted after three trials. And there is michaeljackson, of course, was also accused of fairly serious crimes only to be acquitted in court. Well, officials here seem to agree that Donald Trumps star should be removed, but theyre in no hurry to do so, probably because the Hollywood Walk Of Fame generates millions of dollars every year in tourist revenue, and all the time thats the case, nobody here is looking to rock the boat.
