Trial begin over nuts. Hello and a very warm welcome to you. The conflict in ukraine shows no sign of easing. The question now, who controls the airport in the east of the country. On sunday, ukrainian Officials Say they had taken it after days of intense fighting. Now prorussian rebels are claiming they have seized it. Here is what the airport looked like last summer before the conflict, it used to handle some 5 million passengers every year. Well, now this is what it looks like. These pictures were taken by a drone and show just how severely damaged the airport is after weeks of fighting. The fighting has continued, despite the ceasefire agreed in september. More than 4,700 people have been killed in ukraine since the rebels took control in vast areas of the east in april of last year. The u. N. s Refugee Agency says that over 600,000 people displaced. Ukraines ambassador at large clarified just who is in control of donetsk airport. Ukraine controls donetsk airport, and will control it even with the aid of the resistance, and there is no force on the russian or federate force that can break down our symbol. But ambassador, even if you see that prorussian separatists are claiming that they are holding it. Well in recent days russians have had a number of terrorists already control the airport that they everyone. And just yesterday, foreign russia of russia demanded that they hand over the airport to terrorists. So there is a misunderstanding even inside russia who is in control of the airport. Official and realistic positions, the reality is airport is controlled by Ukrainian Forces. The fact that we are even talking about fighting on the ground, it just simply means that the agreement of a ceasefire, is it completely sterile . No we believe in the ceasefire. And we never violated any single provision of that. We always responded to attacks coming from terrorists and recent attack on the airport is one of the most fierce and massive in the recent months. Russian tanks was a clear violation of this agreement. And an attempt to undermine the whole concept of this agreement. But we offered the ceasefire to russia. We said we are ready to take whatever means necessary, starting from today, the ensure ceasefire. It is still a major symbol for our peace settlement process. That was ukrainians ambassador at large. The situation there is of course incredibly confused. Lets cross over now to our correspondent, david stern in kiev. David, as the ambassador is saying Ukrainian Forces are very much in control. But were receiving pictures that i have to clarify, were not 100 certain of when these pictures were filmed. But were receiving pictures of fighting there, that we see clearly soldiers or fighters with russian navy insignia on their uniforms. David, a very very confused picture. Yes, a very confused picture. Its difficult to say exactly what the situation is at the airport right now. As you pointed out, what we can say with any safety is that there has been some intense fighting, very intense fighting the last 24 hours, which continues. This has actually been going on for days now. But its difficult to say exactly on the situation in the airport. And it also should be said that even before this when the airport was held by the Ukrainian Government forces it is not entirely controlled. There was a floor or floors in the terminal that the prorussian, the russianbacked separatists also controlled. So were waiting to see exactly what happens. But obviously this is feeding into concerns here in kiev and elsewhere in the west that this is going to escalate into something much larger. Were already receiving reports of other areas where fighting has broken out. Now, david, the prorussian rebels are suggesting that it was ukraine who rejected the peace terms. Where are we in what the next steps are . Well, what the next steps are is very unclear. Obviously, what we have are claims and counterclaims. Accusations and counteraccusations. Moscow saying they have offered a peace deal which is rejected. The ukrainians saying theyre very much behind the minsk peace deal. Theyve also made an offer of a ceasefire which hasnt been observed. Its really unclear whats going to happen next. And indeed, as you have pointed out, theres many deals that this peace deal this minsk deal that was reached in september is in tatters now. Basically what were talking about is an escalation in the fighting, even though the two sides say this is not what they want. Now, the eu ministers are meeting in brussels. Theyll now be discussing sanctions against moscow. Is any of this working . Its difficult to say whats actually working. Obviously, moscow is putting on, i guess, a strong face a brave face about this thing, that the sanctions dont have an effect. As we know their economy has been hit very hard. Whether its exactly by the sanctions or primarily from the dropping oil prices still, russia does seem to be suffering. Whether this can force moscows hand, as eu diplomats and officials here in kiev hope thats obviously another question. But people will be watch vrging very closely what comes out of that meeting and are welcoming any type of support that are coming from the meeting of the ministers. David thank you very much for bringing us up to date david stern in kiev for us. Well as i mentioned, the European Union Foreign Ministers are meeting in brussels. This is a scheduled meeting, but of course it comes in the aftermath of that militant attack in france and the discovery of a jihadist cell in belgium. The ministers are expected to consider how to respond to the power threat and how to improve cooperation on security. Theyll be discussing ways to combat the threat posed by radicalized europeans returning home after fighting in iraq and syria. Here is what the british secretary said earlier. We will all be determined to do what is necessary to keep europe safe from the terrorist threat. Well be talking about the challenge of extreme islamism today and how we deal in our counterterrorist response with it. Well be looking at some of the specific measures that will help to keep us safe like passenger name records within europe. That was the British Foreign secretary, philip hammond, speaking a little bit earlier. While in france the popularity of president Francois Hollande seems to have soared after the attacks earlier this month. Mr. Hollandes ratings have gone up from 21 to 40 . Lets go live now to paris. Our correspondent, James Reynolds is there. James, when the attacks in paris happened, i was presenting that day and we were all struck by just how quickly president hollande was at the scene of those Charlie Hebdo offices, within literally 30 35 minutes or so. And now it looks like his popularity has gone up so much because of that reaction. Indeed. This is a record rise in the poles. He was at the time of those attacks, on just 19 approval rating. That was the lowest recorded approval rating. Hes now jumped 21 points to 40 . Essentially, thats got him back to where he was about a year or so ago. But i think a lot of people here, political commentators here, are a little bit cautious about that huge jump in the polls, because not just in france, but in other countries, we often see a huge short bounce in the poles for leaders in the aftermath of crisis or tragedy, as the nation rallies around. I think the bigger test for mr. Hollande will come in the next few weeks and months as the investigation into those attacks deepen and continue and as more questions are asked about exactly what the authorities might have known about the Jihadi Networks and whether or not they did enough to prevent the attacks. The hard questions will come later, but a bounce in the polls comes right now. So james, your inkling is this is unsustainable . Its impossible to predict, but usually things settle down a little bit after, but nevertheless, mr. Hollande and his Prime Minister his popularity has also gone up will want to try to use their newfound status to push through some of the programs theyve wanted to push through. But there are not National Elections here in france for some time. So it will be a big test at the polls for some time. Thanks very much for talking us through this. Now, tens of thousands of people have been marching in the russian region of chechnya to rally against the french against the magazine Charlie Hebdo. They marched through the capital of this predominantly muslim region carrying posters that read, hands off our beloved prophet. On friday, the chechen leader wrote on his Instagram Account that those who defended Charlie Hebdo were his personal enemies. A short time ago, yuri menzo in the chechen capital gave us this update what you can see is part of a huge demonstration here and the demonstration is encouraging, but nothing here in chechnya happens outside the control of the authorities, and personally the government. So actually the demonstration was organized by the authorities and virtually all the government employees, the teachers the doctors, the street cleaners and so on were strongly recommended to attend. And the most that they are carrying, which is printed many of thousands of copies, at the hands of our beloved prophet, mohamed. There are also other slogans as well. The whole demonstration is meant to show that they condemn the cartoon of this prophet muhammad, like those published in Charlie Hebdo. They do not justify those who killed the frempblnch cartoonist but put their stress on their values as opposed to the western ones. Yuri venndik reporting. A federal prosecutor who last week accused the countrys president of a coverup has been found dead at his home in the capital. He was investigating the 1994 bombing of a Jewish Center in buenos aires when four people died. On wednesday, he accused Cristina Fernandez of covering up the bombing. He was really saddened by the death of fernandez, who was a very, very prominent person in arch tee argentina. For ten years, he was in charge of the worst terrorist attack in the history of argentina, 85 people were killed. And this is still a very sensitive issue, because we have to bear in mind that 20 years later, it remains unsolved. And also because he did appear in congress to give some details of these very serious allegations that he made against the president , but also some saying that the government was trying to exchange for its trade agreements. Do we have any reaction from the president . Not yet. The only official reaction we got was either from the securities that gave some details about his death. Against the prosecutor or whether he killed himself, there was a weapon and a bullet next to his body. But the president hasnt said anything yet. The terror spokesman saying she was informed of the death of this prosecutor. We have to remember that last week the government said that everything that Alberto Nisman was saying regarding this group, that the president was working very hard to trying to finally capture those responsible for the attacks back in the history. The former Korean Airlines executive, cho hyunah, who went into a rage when her nuts were served in a bag rather than on a plate, has pled not guilty to violating aviation safety. Miss cho is accused of endangering passengers by ordering the plane back to the gates before takeoff. She spoke in a whisper with her head bowed. Our correspondent says miss cho pleaded not guilty. Its the indignity, which is the real thing. She appeared in court, one of the most privileged people in this country, she appeared in green prison overalls and shes now being held in prison held in captivity, for 19 days since she was arrested on december the 30th. Shes the daughter of the top person in korean air, and she thought that it was her right to have a big fit, a big tantrum, on a plane from new york as it taxied to takeoff, because the nuts werent served in the right way. Nutrage its called by everybody. And that shes become a figure. But now its got a bit more serious than that, because shes accused of violating aviation law, and thats a serious business. Its the kind of law that says you cant divert a plane without good reason. And its law aimed at people who hijack, that kind of thing. Shes accused of diverting a plane for no good reason so its now serious trial. And a very serious trial, because she could face up to 15 years in prison. That sounds remarkable for something which was essentially a bit of a funny story. Yeah. I mean thats the maximum. And as i say, that law is designed for people who divert flights, inflight, in the air, causing serious danger. Her situation is clearly very different from that. But shes become an example, if you like and an example within this country of privileged behaving badly. And theres no doubt that she did behave badly. Shes admitted it herself. She, by many accounts made the offending person the guy who served the nuts incorrectly, she made him kneel in the plane. Shes also accused of assaulting him, because shebanged edbanged him repeatedly with a folder. All of this stuff is very very humiliating, but also very costly for the airline, which may also face additional fines. Steve evans now. As the fighting continues in ukraine, the question now is who controls donetsk airport in the east of the country . On sunday ukrainian officials said they had taken it after days of intense fighting. But now, prorussian rebels are claiming that they have seized it. Well, this is what the airport looked like in the summer. Before the conflict it had to handle some 5 million passengers every year. And this is what it looks like now. These pictures were taken by a drone, and they show just how severely damaged the airport is after weeks of intense fighting. The fighting there has continued, despite the ceasefire agreed in september. More than 4,700 people have been killed in ukraine since the rebels took control of vast areas of the east in april of last year. The u. S. Refugee agency says over 600,000 people have been displaced. Ukraines ambassador at large. I asked him to clarify just who is in control of donetsk airport. Ukraine controls donetsk airport. And will control it. Its a symbol of our resistance and there is no force, no Russian Force that can break down our symbol. But prorussian separatists are claiming that they are holding it. In recent days russian machine has created a number of terrorists already control the airport everywhere and just yesterday, Foreign Ministry of russian to hand over the airport to terrorists. So there is a misunderstanding inside russia who is in control of the airport. Official and realistic position the reality is airport is controlled by Ukrainian Forces. The fact that we are even talking about fighting on the ground, it means that this agreement of a ceasefire, is this completely done . No we believe in the ceasefire. We never violated any single opinion of it. We always responded to attacks coming from terrorists. And the recent attack on the airport is one of the most fierce and massive in the recent months. It was a clear violation of this agreement. And an attempt to undermine the whole concept of agreements. But we offer a ceasefire to russia. We said, we are ready to take any measure necessary, starting from today, to ensure ceasefire. It is still a major symbol for our peace settlement problemscess. So that was the Ukrainian Ambassador at large. But now a rebel leader in the area has told reporters that actually his forces still have control of the airport. Translator i can say with srnt that all attempts of the Ukrainian Army to take the airport and to get revenge have been defeated over the last year with the provide with which they tried to convince ukraine and all international society, that they can get the airport a new terminal all these attempts have failed. So that is a rebel leader saying that his forces control the airport. With us is the bbcs alexi. A really confused picture, made even more confusing by images weve received at the bbc of people with russian navy insignia on their uniforms fighting within the airport. I should say, were not exactly sure when these pictures were taken, but incredibly confused picture, over whos got control of this airport. I dont think well know for sure for a couple of days perhaps. And i think, yes, there are all sorts of images coming out of the airport, some through ukrainian television, some through russian television. The pictures that you saw with the fighters with the russian marine insignia on their uniforms are the recent ones and come from the russian television. Whether this is somebody who bought it in a coffeeshop, we will never know or if these are the regular troops we will probably also never know. But this is part of a pattern of supplies and munitions to the rebels. They dont seem to have a lack of it. Theres quiltte a lot of new, sophisticated equipment. And i think the donetsk airport is part of a much larger picture. Today i looked at the map provided by the Security Council of ukraine. And theres fighting and bombardment and shelling across the whole demarcation line across the two countries. All the way through donetsk, through the airport, and all the way to hans. So were talking about a massive escalation of the war effort and lack of dploepiplomacy. I think besides the russians and ukrainians are not talking to each other. They have angry messages accusing each other of not responding. And chancellor merkel hasnt seem to have produced any results. And in the meantime this minsk accord seems to have fallen to the wayside. The ukrainian side says its still not crossing the demarcation line but its neither here nor there whos crossing which line and what kind of fighting is there. I think one key element of this conflagration is the death toll among the civilians. Today, three children were killed in the bombardment. There are reports of more civilians, including the elderly and children being killed doing the shelling of one mining town in the city yesterday. I saw absolutely horrible pictures of civilians being killed on bus stops. So were talking about a really serious humanitarian catastrophe, on the back of the military catastrophe and diplomatic deadlock. Indeed. Olexy, thank you very much. Of course the situation in ukraine is going to be discussed by European Union Foreign Ministers, who are meeting in brussels. But, of course this is the first scheduled meeting after that attack in france and the discovery of jihadist cell in belgium. So the ministers are expected to consider how to respond to the pair of threats and how to improve cooperation on the security. Theyll be discussing ways to combat the threat posed by radicalized europeans returning home after fighting in iraq and in syria. Lets cross over live now to our correspondent in brussels Anna Holligan. Anna, this is a scheduled meeting, its not an emergency meeting, but those events in france, very much at the top of the agenda. Yes, absolutely. Europe is still on high alert. And outside the eu buildings here in brussels today, there are soldiers and camouflaged carrying rifles armed trucks as well. And thats a reflection of just how seriously this threat is being taken. 28 Foreign Ministers meeting today, and the main item on the agenda will be those foreign fighters. We know up to 5,000 european citizens are now engaged or have returned from the jihad and iraq and syria, and are going to be looking at ways to deal with them, if and when they come home. So the German Foreign minister said that the attacks in paris, which left 17 people dead changed people and the world. Thats one of the items theyll be discussing today. And of course the other item on the top of the agenda is that the jihadist cell in belgium. Yes absolutely. There were antiterror raids in belgium last thursday. Two suspects were shot dead in a gun battle with police. One taken into custody. 13 arrests followed across the country. Five people have been charged with terrorism offenses. And were just hearing that the belgium authorities have requested the extradition of one suspect, when was arrested in athens on saturday night. It goes to show how widespread this is. There, of course have been antiterror raids in berlin as well. So all of the ministers meeting today, for the first time. Although we should say, were not expecting any kind of concrete policy decisions. This is purely an opportunity for discussing how they should be tackling these threats. Okay Anna Holligan in brussels, thank you very much. Well as european ministers tackle the militant at leasts in europe, suspected militants from Nigerian Islamist Group boko haram are said to have kidnapped dozens of people in raids in neighboring cameroon. The jihadist fighters crossed into cameroon from nigeria and targeted two villages in the mokolo region. Many of those kidnapped in the crossborder attack were children. At least four people are believed to have been killed. Lets cross over to the bbcs joining us from the capital. What do we know about this attack . Well, the details we have so far is that the attack was carried out by boko haram insurgents, who before now, were concentrating their attacks in northeastern part of nigeria. Now they seem to be crossing into cameroon to carry out their attacks. This is the second time was some villages. The second time is a village. Where they also abducted children and killed four people and its the level of violence that boko haram are inflicting on civilians that is incredibly worrying. Yes of course it is very worrying. For nigeria. It has been very very upsetting. Many civilians, thousands have been killed. And now the group seems to be crossing into cameroon which is causing a lot of concerns to many people especially the cameroonian authorities. Thats why last week the cameroonian president has called for assistance from chad. Chad has sent its troops to cameroon to help the country fight the insurgency by boko haram, who seem to be gaining at least gaining grounds now and crossing into carry out their attacks. Okay. Thank you very much on those on that news that boko haram crossing over into cameroon. Now, tens of thousands of people have been marching in the russian region of chechnya to rally against the french magazine Charlie Hebdo, that we were hearing about earlier. They marched through the streets in the capital of this predominantly muslim region carrying posters that read hands off our beloved prophet. On friday, a chechnyan leader wrote on his instagram county that those who defended Charlie Hebdo were his personal enemies. A huge demonstration in the chechnyan capital is organized by the authorities of this predominantly muslim region of russia, to demonstrate how strongly they condemn the cartoons of prophet muhammad, like those published in the french magazine Charlie Hebdo. This is an initiative by the muslim clergy but nothing here in chechnya happens without the permission of the government. Thus, all the government employees, teachers doctors, street cleaners and so on were strongly recommended the attend. And people are brought here on buses from various corners of chechnya chechnya, and also corners of the russian north. That doesnt necessarily mean that these people do not believe in the slogans they are asked to carry. And the slogans read you do not understand how much we love the prophet. Hands off of our beloved prophet. And we are against the cartoons. When asked, these people do not try to justify those who killed the french cartoonist, but they still put the stress on their traditional values as they call it, as opposed to the western ones. Yuri vendik reporting from the chechnyan capital. Theres been heavy fighting ins sanaa. Gunfire echoed across the city and mortars fell around the president ial palace. The fighting near the palace marks the biggest challenge yet to the government of the president. Earlier, a ceasefire was agreed, but hasnt taken effect. Some of its employees have been accused of tampering with evidence trying to persuade witnesses to change stories from the truth.
