Revolt, europes leaders meet in pistorius sells to discuss how to win back trust. Also in the program, aaron is here and weve got the whos who of the Business World in london talking today about increasing capital lifts. Corporate corruption and companies not paying their fair share. What is it . Its called bad capitalism. Big business is gathering to change all of that. The question is how do you convince shareholders to lose in the short term so we can all gain in the long term. Hello. It is midday in london, 7 00 a. M. In washington, 2 00 p. M. In donetsk in Eastern Ukraine, the scene of intense fighting between Government Forces and prorussian separatists. Dozens of rebels are believe to have been killed in retaking the airport, and there are reports in the last few hours, a large ice hockey stadium has been set on fire by a group of unidentified men, another reminder of just how close ukraine is and danger is descending into fullscale civil war. The countrys Prime Minister says it will not be possible to have bilateral talks with russia to resolve the crisis without international mediation. Nick chiles begins our coverage. Reporter the battle for donetsk airport after some of the most intense and deadly fighting so far between Government Forces and prorussian gunman, the Authorities Say theyre back in charge here as well as helicopter gun ships, they deploy fighter jets. As tensions remain high, still it seems sporadic gunfire around the airport, the struggle here is not over, and all this both underlies and adds to the scale of the task in disputing, let alone resolving this bitter battle of wills over Eastern Ukraine. The message from the new man who claimed victory in the countrys president ial election, more autonomy but a tough line on the violence and no talk with the gunmen. They dont have any interest to speak with nobody, the same way like the somalian pirates. They want to conserve the illegal situation there when they have socalled a bandit state which keep under machine gun forces. Reporter at the heart of the revolt in donetsk, they didnt even vote. Instead theyre registering new volunteers to defend the selfproclaimed republic. For kiev, it remains huge. These new Ukrainian Government pictures supposedly of the army taking on more prorussian gunmen on monday. All these images prompted another call from moscow for kiev to Halt Operations in the east and what chance for dialogue between moscow and kiev, ukraines interim Prime Minister has ruled it out. Back in donetsk theyre mopping up after fire ravaged the ice hockey arena. One report spoke of unidentified gunmen storming the building. The situation in the east is clearly still highly combustible. Nick chiles, bbc news. The situation at the aport is calmer than it was yesterday, but still pretty tense. Mark lowen sent this report from here. Reporter you can see the aftermath of that intense fire fight around the airport yesterday. This truck completely burned out, the windows full of bullet holes. Around the base of the truck, we cant show you because its too graphic, there are body parts weve seen and a lot of blood, but also a lot of debris from the fighting that took place yesterday. Now, weve been here this morning where there have been some gunshots that have rung out from the airport, but not the same intensity that there was yesterday. There was spore raddic gunfire coming from inside the airport compound. We understand that the ukrainian troops are largely in control of the airport base, but it seems that there was some kind of clearout operation to try to flush out the last elements of rebel control from the airport, clearly kiev determined that the airport does not fall to the insurgents or the terrorists, as they put it, because it would really give the separatist groups here a Real Advantage in trying to access this region. Of course, theres the crimea factor as well, that back in february when prorussian insurgents launched their incursion of crimea which led to the annexation by moscow a month later. When they took the airport, that was the first Key Installation they took control of. The Ukrainian Government very determined to clamp down on that. Petro poroshenko elected now, gave a speech yesterday saying he would not negotiate with terrorists as he put it. The anti terror operation should be over with in a matter of a few hours rather than a few months. Clearly you see the impact of that in this area around donetsk airport. Lets speak to andre you krets from the bbcs ukrainian service. Where are these men getting their arms from . How is it going to be possible to defuse a situation spiraling out of control there . Its difficult to say. The ukrainian sources are not in control as we can see now in the eastern parts of the country. They are pointing the finger at russia. In previous instances the helicopters were down. Obviously they have some sophisticated weaponry. Russians are saying theyve got nothing to do with it and they have no influence over these separatists, its really difficult to verify. We can see theyre getting bolder and bolder. The situation in donetsk, one of the largest cities in ukraine, fighter jets from the Ukrainian Government fought this firing and so on. So its really scary now. That is the prerogative of the authorities in kiev to try to restore law and order. What about the calls for some international mediation, is that the only way by putting International Peacekeepers on the ground to stop this . Its difficult to say. There was one round of talks for geneva one. After that both sides came back and said that they started blaming each other that they are not fulfilling all the obligations. Americans and European Union are saying we need another round of these talks. When it will take place is not certain at the moment. Everyone is waiting for the new president , petro poroshenko, who is saying hes going to be much tougher and he under terror operation will take hours. If you look at the situation, the ukrainian authorities now are saying they cant really be any tougher because of the fear that there will be casualties against civilians. How will he e do it . The key is russias response. What do we know about the troops amassed on the border between russia and ukraine . Russia is saying they are deploying and moving back to their normal position thousands of their soldiers. Nato and americans are saying they do see some activity, but not as significant as it should be. So there are still thousands Russian Forces near the border with ukraine even though russian authorities are saying theyre just taking part in some exercise. All right. Thank you very much indeed. 11 weeks after Malaysia Airlines flight mh370 disappeared, authorities in kuala lumpur have released raw data showing satellite tracking of the plane in its final moments. The data has been used to calculate that the jet crashed somewhere in the southern indian ocean. The search of the crash area has so far turned up nothing. Relatives of the 239 people on board have called for independent experts to reexamine it. Jennifer pack reports from kuala lumpur. Reporter eleven weeks on, officials are still looking for the malaysian airliner with very few clues to its whereabouts. This is what we know so far. The plane left kuala lumpur after midnight on route to beijing. About an hour into the flight, one of the planes Vital Communications systems sent what would be its last message. 12 minutes later somewhere in the cockpit said good night malaysian 370. The plane didnt check in with Vietnamese Air Traffic Control. It was then detected by malaysian military radar flying west before heading out towards the indian ocean. This was the last time flight 370 was seen. Malaysian officials have now released raw data that show why they believe the plane was lost at sea. This 47page report focuses on 14 signals sent between inmar sat satellite and the aircraft in the final hours of the flight. But it doesnt indicate the exact location of the aircraft. Investigators have relied on this limited information to determine where the plane went after it disappeared from radar, but there are doubts about their calculations. Under pressure, the malaysian government has released the raw data to show it is not hiding anything. Frustrated families of the missing passengers are not yet convinced. What we want is a full version of inmar sat report including the data and also the way how you calculate, the formula that you use. That is also very important. Data means nothing. Reporter after weeks of fruitless searching, many relatives believe authorities have been looking in the wrong place and have told the bbc they will get an independent analysis on the latest data. Jennifer pak, pbs news, kuala lumpur. Lets speak to the david lead, how digestible is all this raw data for the relatives of those who are missing . I think the data is useful for experts to look through. Theres 47 pages oift. Only a few pages contain the useful data points that are of interest. And then people can sit at home and do their own calculations, be they amateurs that are physicists or academics or industry specialists. Theres going to be a lot of people having a go at this as an academic exercise as well as professional interest. They may validate the calculations that have been done already. This, of course, is the data that the rescuers and the search teams have been using all along. Theres nothing new, no new developments here, is there, to suggest this plane could be in a different area. There were some questions about the original calculations that were carried out. The geo stationary satellite isnt exactly stationary. This wasnt always clear in the first report that was released, that they had taken the wobble of this satellite into account. So the path of that satellite is known and the grand station it communicates with is known, so you should be able to add the wobble of the satellite into the moving of the aircraft and be able to determine with a reasonable degree of accuracy certain elements of the flight path. Thats all we can do at this stage, other than start the under water search because the surface search has shown nothing so far. Talk us through the arguments again for delays the release of this information. Does this tie in with spy agencies from Different Countries and potentially even terrorist threats, if organizations know just how closely things, objects can be tracked right around the world . I think in many areas aircraft are tracked down to almost their wing span because they carry gps transponders which transmit the position so we know where they were at a precise point in time. That level of air Traffic Control technology isnt implemented in this particular area of the world and you saw part of the system was switched off anyway as it got to the vietnamese border. We know the aircraft can be tracked quite reasonably. Its a question of the interference by the pilot. The reason for the delay many this report is purely awaiting permission from all the parties to release the data because the accident investigators dont own the data itself. That may be owned by the airline and inmar sat and you have to wait for them to give permission. Then its a question of really at what point should you release it. Theyve made the decision that now is the right time given that theyve searched the high probability areas in the ocean and not found anything to date. Thank you so much indeed. It didnt confirm or deny that the team had been kidnapped as the syrian minister had already claimed. Jim, what is the latest information about prae sizely what happened here . Two versions, a rather vague one from the ocpw site says its team which includes un members as well as the organization itself came under attack. It didnt specify how. Its quite vague in that respect. It did say all the team members were safe and well and returning to base. In other words, theres an implicit denial of the prior statement from the Syrian Foreign Ministry saying six ocpw un team members have been abducted from two vehicles which turned back after a third vehicle had been hit by a debt nation of some sort, some kind of explosion. The explosion fits in with the ocpw comes under attack. The two sides are at odds over what happened after that, the ocp wrfrnlths saying all the team is safe and well and going back to base. I would assume that would be the case. The regimes version, the governments version basically blamed the whole incident on what it calls terrorists. At this dinner tonight here at the European Council in brussels, he wants to discuss the outcome of the elections and the look at what they can learn from its results. There is menity to talk about. They will arrive outside this building in the evening, walk up the red carpet here and they already knew even before this vote took place that there was likely to be a large portion of voters deciding they wanted at least a change reforming the eu if not to take their countries out testify union altogether. Its not just the two in britain, theres also the danish peoples party, greece, many other national groupings that are arguing. It represents a challenge for the leaders of the 28 members of the European Union. It represents a challenge for the other institutions of the eu because they have to decide what theyre going to do about that discontent. Make no mistake, the vast majority of voters decided to go for the main center right and center left groupings and the liberals and the greens. They still form the overwhelming bulk of the European Parliament and they are, broadly speaking, overwhelmingly pro eu. I stressed to the Prime Minister that we have a common agenda of development and economic revival which is not possible to achieve without peace and stability in the region. I urge that together we should bridge the instability and insecurity that has plagued us for decades. Consequently, it was important for us to Work Together for peace, progress and prosperity. That was sharif speaking after the talks held with the new indian Prime Minister, narendra modi. Youre watching gmt. Inclusive capitalism . Global leaders, 37 countries in a nutshell sharing the big economic pie. Distributing that economic pie evenly, fairly. Thanks very much, tim. In the year since the financial crisis began, i brought you stories of bankers rigging interest rates, weve had corporate corruption, weve had tax avoidance, also companies not caring about the supply chains. You think of the horrible bangladeshi factory collapse. According to the experts, all these things are as a result of right here, bad capitalism, the pursuit of big quick bucks no matter what the longterm consequence. Of course, all of this being nurturing, growing inequality around the globe. Today, as i mentioned, some of the biggest names in business are gathering in london to try to change all of that. It could be a big task. Lets go to ben thompson, our Business Correspondent in londons financial district. Great to have you with us. As i said, it was a big gathering. Am i right by saying in a nutshell that capitalism over the past many years has been about growing the big economic pie and focused on that rather than focused on distributing that pie . Reporter its interesting, aaron, all the things you talked about in the introduction are whats been called the crisis of capitalism, particularly why the wealth isnt being shared right across the economy, right across society. The rich it seems are always getting richer, the poor are always getting poorer, but it is also an excuse about technology, technology from a business point of view is good. It means productivity is increased and their costs come down. If youre a worker, that could mean that you lose your job. Also in many countries around the world, youth unemployment still a huge problem. A generation of young people who hasnt been at work. But a session that were listening to this morning currently going on. Its about long term versus short term. Many businesses are governed by the idea that they need to deliver quarterly profit statements, earnings for their shareholders and returns for their shareholders who invest in their business. But that is a very short term aim. It looks at the short term issues and doesnt look at what they contribute to society. A perfect example of that recently has been the big u. S. Pharmaceuticals giant pfizer trying to take over its british rival as zeneca. That deal has been on going for many, many months. It hasnt gone through. That deal was rejected by shareholders. Earlier i spoke to one of the big shareholders, abidine asset management. The chief executive of that firm said that is a perfect example of how business and shareholders are looking at the longterm implications rather than simply a shortterm profit for a premium on share price. This is what he had to say. We backed the as seneca board and the rejection of pfizer. Its a rare example of the longterm view being taken over the shortterm view. So the Company Outlines a case that they had a great longterm future and we would be better rejecting the bid even though we did take a hit between the sort of 55 pounds and the 40 pounds it is today. So its quite a decision for a fund manager, especially as i say, if you need the performance to meet your quarterly figures. It was a brave decision, a very brave decision by the board as well as the ceo because hes got to produce the good longterm numbers. Very briefly, this is about changing the entire mindset, convincing everybody to lose in the longterm and gain in long term. Any outofbox thinking going on there today . Reporter one interesting stat about a shortterm longterm thing. Today they hold on for four months, the whole idea of shareholders moving into a business, buying the shares and taking money out again. So lots of the talk here is about what businesses should do for the longterm. Its about changing their targets because frankly, we all know it takes a brave manager to think about longterm implications for saking any shortterm profit. If they do that, they might not be in the job for a long time before they get the boot. A tough one indeed. Ben thompson live in london. Lets talk about this, the battle of the airports, the battle of whos got the most international passengers. Of late i think its fair to say its been a twohorse race, a twohorse race between Londons Heathrow right there and dubais International Airport. The numbers have been out not too long ago, released in dubai. It shows london still holds the top spot, but very, very close. Lets go to dubai and talk to bbcs mark global. The easter holidays in the uk i think broad heathrow above 6 million for the first time this calendar year. If you look at it from the beginning of the calendar year, dubai is on track for becoming the Busiest Airport this year because there are over 2 million passengers more than heathrow if you count up all months um to april. The reason why, if you look at it carefully, heathrow is not growing year on year whereas dubais growth is averaging 13, 14, 15 . Its easy to see why in a sense. Theres no Planning Commission problems in the middle of the desert. Theres a real drive to make aviation the heart of business here, 250,000 jobs. Its also a quarter of gdp. One man who has had a ring side seat for all of this, aaron, is paul griffin. He used to run Gatwick Airport in the uk until he moved here in 2007. He explains whats happened since then. Ive now gone from two runways in 2007 to the prospect of seven runways by the mid 2020s. Willy walsh of ba says he needs about 74 different interested parties to unite to produce 4. 5 kilometers of additional tarmac at heathrow. The absolute implication of that statement is that hes never going to get agreement. I need probably three, four, five people in the room. Mark, were going to wrap it up. It highlights some governments who get the importance of aviation and some governments who dont. Mark lobel. Thats it for the business. Got to go now. Off you go. Stay with us here on bbc world news. Russia has called for an immediate end to the fighting. Malaysian authorities release raw data they say shows missing flight mh370 crashed into the southern indian ocean. It still hasnt been located. The Nigerian Military claims it knows where more than 200 girls kidnapped by boka haram have been taken but say they dont currently have plans to attempt a rescue. The countrys chief of Defense Staff, air Marshall Alex badeh says its gud news for the parents but admitted they wouldnt risk going there by force. Lets get more with our security correspondent frank gardner. Its difficult to know whether this is true. Actually not particularly good news for the parents . Not necessarily. I would treat this with a degree of skepticism. I hope they do know where they are, but thats only the beginning. They have to negotiate to get them out. As the Nigerian Military themselves said, an armed rescue attempt is out of the question because its going to be a blood bath if that happens. In that sense boka haram holds the cards here. They will have no call s about their hostages. They are not afraid to die themselves. They know that terrain very well. Theyve been operating there in the forest area for quite some time. They are determined, more motivated than the forces of the authorities who are up against them. The problem is that goodluck jonathan, nigerian leader has ruled out any negotiation with boka haram. There appears to be a little mismatch here. I think the nigerian authorities are not speaking as one here. We hear conflicting things. So goodluck jonathan, especially having been to the paris summit where collectively they declared war on boka haram, he is saying, were not going to release any militants. Thats the prime demand of boka haram. Theyre not going to give them up for nothing, unless somebody can persuade them to do that. It depends on the power of intermediaries and negotiation. Theyre facing three unpalatable choices here. One, it does nothing so the girls are basically lost. Thats politically unacceptable and morally unacceptable. Theyre coming up with pressure from daily marches in ab buj gentleman. Two, they do an armed rescue. Its a blood bath. People will die. Three, well, they negotiate their way out of this, perhaps when the lens of media, world media is not so much on them. The forest where we think they are is a huge area. Do we know if the actual surveillance equipment being offered internationally could have led to this pinpointing in terms of the sophistication of the equipment made available now to the nigerians. The Technical Capability is there. The americans have provided a slowmoving aircraft that can move slowly over the area. You can see thats the last video that is from days ago now. I doubt very much theyre being held in such a big group. They would have been broken up into smaller groups. There have been glimpses of them by witnesses. Whether the Nigerian Military really knows the exact location of all of them, i doubt. Even if it did, it does not have the military capability to do this. The report is they dont even have night vision goggles. They dont know that part of nigeria. When they have confronted boka haram, forces of law and order have often been out gunned, Amnesty International maintained there were four noticed before the raid on the girl and the authorities didnt react because they were outgunned. The World Health Organization says half of the 55,000 annual deaths are children under the age of 15. The virus is spread by saliva when infected animals bite. Dogs make up most of the carriers, but bats also spread the disease in some countries as well. Lets go to paris and i can speak to dr. Belnar valla from the World Health Organization. The vaccination has been around for over 100 years. Why is it that 55,000 people each year still die from rabies . Good afternoon. We are working with the World Health Organization and fao to convince all governments of countries endemic of rabies in asia and africa, that investing on vaccination of dogs would lead very soon to the eradication of the disease in humans. We have currently hundreds of thousands of people treated because of dog bite as a precaution to prevent rabies in human. As a very small part of that cost, we could vaccinate all the dogs, and we know that vaccinating only 70 of the Dog Population in infeked countries would lead to the eradication of dogs worldwide and we would save thousands of lives of children dieing in terrible pain. And we need really more Media Coverage on the need of our society. We count on you, thank you very much for covering this. Okay. Well, its not just dogs. Its bats as well, isnt it . What is the cost, not only of producing the vaccine but actually finding or roundings up these dogs to vaccinate them . Other species are involved in rabies transmission. But human rabies, all cases of human are linked with dogs. We estimate the number of case at 70,000 700,000 cases worldwide. The cases linked with dog bite are more than 95 of the cases. So cleaning the rabies in the Dog Population worldwide would be really the solution. The cost will be ridiculous comparing to the cost of human treatment. Dr. Fallah. Were out of time.
