Weather Center very good morning to it's a wet and breezy start today across much of the U.K. But especially so across southern and southwest England Wales and up into western Scotland and perhaps northwest England as a lots of standing water around on the roads making for poor driving conditions during this morning's commute for the race they'll also be a bit of cloud some lights and paci ranger in the morning but as we had on the afternoon the heavy rain will become more confined to East and Northern Ireland and western Scotland with sunshine and blustery showers moving up from the south into southern England and Wales now some of these will be heavy with the risk of thunder sunny spells will develop into the afternoon more especially across more sheltered eastern parts of England and Scotland where it will become mild with highs of 14 or 15 degrees here but further west than that the cloud and rain the close to 10 to 12 Celsius and it will be a windy day for all but Northern Ireland now the rain will clear north and east into the North Sea during Wednesday night to leave a cooler night for many with clear skies and lighter winds temperatures will fall to low to mid single digits for a time the next batch of rain will arrive across southwest England and South Wales by the end of the night so for Thursday it's a wet start for the southwest of England Wales with the rain moving north into the Irish Sea into northwest England and Southwest Scotland as they were elsewhere to be largely dry with some sunny spells and again mild with Southwest winds and highs of 12 to 14 Celsius now Friday looks very unsettled at this stage with a deep low pressure system bringing very wet and very windy conditions to the western half of the U.K. Through the day perhaps of a gales and expose western areas although eastern areas will stay dry until later on in the day but we can also remain unsettled and mild with sunshine. Blustery showers I've started off with the latest 5 live weather and let's take a look at the front pages this morning the Metro focuses on research published in the British Medical Journal suggesting children are most at risk of a knife attack on their way home from school the same story on The Guardian front page which says doctors are calling for school closing times to be staggered to reduce the risk of violence it's Breck's it's making the front page of the eye it says the Prime Minister's told her cabinet to be on standby to sign off a Brix it deal Meanwhile the Daily Telegraph leads with the late documents which appears to lay out how the government will sell that deal to the public and on the front page of The Times a picture of cricketer Graham Swan during the floss dance after the term was listed as one of Collins dictionary's top 10 words of the year and just a reminder of our top story this morning results continue to come in from the U.S. Midterm elections with American media predicting a divided Congress the Democrats are likely to gain a majority in the House of Representatives with the Republicans set to keep control of the Senate you're listening to B.B.C. Radio 5 Live it's quarter past 5. Good morning millions of Americans have been to the polls the results are still coming in it really just continues to show were a divided country yes the Democrats had the good win for the Republicans that also got some money with me and Nikki Clark it looks like Democrats have made big gains in the House of Representatives but fails to take the Senate the midterm vote is being seen as a referendum on President Trump We'll be hearing from 2 U.S. Company bosses about the impact of his tenure it's been a torrid time on the High Street for many retailers Marks and Spencers is due to update the market on its profits later so we'll be finding out from a retail expert whether the iconic brand can ever week gain its sparkle Good morning Mickey was. Looking at today morning Danny I'll be looking at how the markets are reacting to the U.S. Midterm election results and sticking with M. And S. We want your views what's the last thing you bought at the retailer or how would you advise the boss to shake up the business do get in touch is always 85058 you can messages all on social media you can use the hash tag wake up to money so this morning of course we are getting in the results of the U.S. Midterms the latest the Republicans have held the Senate. C.B.S. News is reporting the Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives despite that blow President Donald Trump has tweeted that the midterm Congressional elections are a tremendous success it's interesting isn't it Mickey how President Trump can always make even a disappointment look like a triumph Yeah I mean he has livened up politics where every view of him and certainly people have been out in force I think there's as many people vote early this time around is involved entirely for the last election so he does engender there's a certain amount. Of Well we talking a lot more about this we've got Jane Signum with us from Rathbone Investment Management Good morning Jane good morning and we've also got Dave Lee with us from Washington good morning Dave. Good morning 1st of all we're going to talk to Peter Bowes who is and a party for the Democrats in Los Angeles Good morning Peter good morning what it sounds like it's so all going on there what's the latest results that we've had. All you're right it is all going on here in just a moment downtown Los Angeles right now this is a Democratic Party celebration because they are in a very good mood having essentially taken control of the house which is something that they've been aspiring to do and they have done it seemingly quite easily they have a lot to celebrate because of this going forward as far as Dawn Trump is concerned with his agenda over the next couple of years it puts a major check and balance of what he is likely to achieve most legislation that has to go through both houses of Congress and if they can just put something in his place to stop him on those policies that they disagree with in the house it makes it much more difficult for the president over the next 2 years. She can scratch him but you can't get rid of him whether you know. These economic policies seem to be working. Well yes and I think to some extent around the country won him some votes that the Republicans have been very successful in the Senate the upper house in part of winning a few seats that extending that majority of the economy is this was gone from busy concerns his big success stories so successful he described it the other day is boring to talk about in the you would go to focus on behalf some of those sexier subjects as he sees it like immigration much more controversial of course but as far as the economy is concerned of course that largely stems from the tax cuts that came in some time ago that is the big success story of the Trump administration. Just briefly with the celebrations there at the Democratic Party the door at but there were lots of people predicting a massive blue wave and that hasn't really materialized and they haven't taken the Senate. It hasn't been a month long and you're right some people predicted and going out was a possibility but the American politics are pretty for a 6 a very different in that respect you don't tend to get the slides here in fact I was just talking to a congressman earlier and I was suggesting to him that Americans seem to like to split the vote put in the hands of the Democrats who are sort of congress and the Republicans in the other and he said no they don't go to the polls and. It just happens that this sort of check and balance of the system seems to crumble quite frequently undoes just does manage to store an ambitious president like President from who wants to push through policies very quickly OK thank you very much indeed we'll let you get back to your party there also with us coming from Washington this morning is Dave Dave your morning so you've been looking at the role of technology in these elections that start with the machines themselves people were being turned away from a polling station in Brooklyn was it any worse than usual. Well what we've seen is sporadic reports of these voting machines not working very well in some cases districts were turning to paper ballots old fashioned paper ballots or just normal ballots as we'd know them back in the U.K. Because all of these machines as well as being fairly in secure some security analysts have warned in ahead of this they're also just very old and so in some cases they're just not working properly because of various technical failures that 40 so far don't seem to be attributing to any kind of nefarious activity more just bad equipment then any kind of targeted attempt to disrupt the disrupt the vote as you mentioned there's been a few instances where the disruptions been so bad that people have been turned away or at least told to queue for an awful long time but according to the Department of Homeland Security which has been updating reporters every 3 hours across the the day here those reports are pretty far and few and far between and it's not really different from what we've seen in previous elections frankly So as far as the Department of Homeland Security is concerned there's not much of a story there it's just part of running a vote of this size across the country where the story was last time in 2016 Facebook social media. What's Baath Party fight used by in these. Well that's something I've been paying very close attention to of course Mickey you know we've spoken several times in the program about how Facebook was absolutely had an absolute disaster in 2016 when I was misinformation being spread there was fake news it was manipulation and it had some believe a real impact on that 2016 vote this time around and 2 years on after several hearings in Congress where Zuckerberg and Twitter's Jack Dorsey were hauled in front to answer questions the big question for the now was whether they could protect the integrity of the midterm vote and I have to say making the experts I've spoken to people who track bought activity and this kind of behavior online many of these experts are actually pretty impressed with how these networks have held up we've seen attempts at misinformation campaigns we've seen coordinated efforts to for example tell people the vote is actually on the 7th of November the 6th of November also suggesting that men shouldn't be voting this time because it's time for for women to have a say those kind of campaigns all designed to stop Americans going to the polls if they had any hesitancy to do that but what we've seen to date suggests that these these companies have actually got on top of a lot of those efforts and dealt with them but what is worth pointing out in that regard is that many of these efforts were. The companies knew about them because external identities told them so for example in Twitter's case the Democratic Party got in touch and said we've discovered 10000 baht accounts automate the accounts posting this material you should remove that Twitter said yes we agree and they've taken it down so a coordinated effort you could say the end result being a massive improvement it seems from where we were in 26 thing has that changed the atmosphere what's it been like you know Washington and people being excited to get out they've been really enthused by the midterms. Well I mean as Mickey was was mentioning as you came out of the program there you know the early turnout was enormous This is a midterm vote don't forget not a presidential elections are typically that is why down on on those votes this is been extremely. Interesting topic here in the news media in the turnout reflects that I think. Where they're kind of online and feel comes into this and where the role of these social networks come in is actually as well as having to deal with the negative sides of this question and stamping out that many of these sites are actually doing a lot to get people to the policy if you log into Facebook today and if you're in the U.S. Should have a note saying it's election day get out and vote many sites were also giving you instructions about a way should vote the timings tips A certain things some of the ride sharing networks and lift their main competitor here were offering discounted rides to polling stations and so forth so we've really seen this effort to get as many people out to die as possible and that's been certainly been reflected in the overall turnout saying and what was the overall atmosphere in Washington like at the moment is there any mention of the word impeachment. Well that's a very good question because of course you know while one of the house is now going to be controlled by Democrats you know it would take a lot more for the for the dreaded I word impeachment to be to be really in play one of the things we have been seeing early reports suggest that one of the things that's going to be early on the Democratic agenda is to put more pressure for some of the more low hanging fruit when it comes to door tramp So for example the tax returns have been some elusive since the campaign for the 26th in elections we've heard reports that Democrats are going to straight for that kind of information and it's going to be very significant that now we're going to see a shift where these intelligence committees that were previously with the House Intelligence Committee previously chaired of course by Republican will now be chaired by a Democrat and I could really shift the tired and. The decisiveness off of those committees when it comes to investigating these aspects of Donald Trump have you know they are emotional ready but I think what have renewed vigor now that the Democrats will control the House OK Dave Lee thank you very much indeed we'll let you get back to watching those results going to bring in Jane signal now from Rathbone Investment Management Jane this is an incredibly interesting election how will it impact on investors do you think Well the interesting thing is if you look back at us midterm elections in almost all cases no matter what the outcome in the run up to the in the mid terms is either a market there's a market weakness or it doesn't really go very far and thereafter because you've got a degree of certainty markets actually performed quite well I think the other big issue here is that actually obviously Donald Trump will find it more difficult to get legislation through but of course what he still can do is he's unchecked on trade so he has more opportunity if anything to issue sanctions and tariffs on trade and less opportunity to pass legislation. I think the there's the young thing that's we've got the sort of boulders on a midterm election is either a boy election or local authority elections and where people sort of cast their vote to reflect on the national politics rather than the local politics but to be honest looking at the markets this morning John I would have known there was no action in the US Yesterday Yes Yeah exactly I mean I don't think this is what markets were expecting in terms of a result that's that certainly you know everything that I've been reading and talking to people and so on this is what we were expecting so so it's not really a surprise in a cause markets are all about whether something's a surprise or not and at this point did it really isn't going to be talking to a couple of businesses later on that we heard from after Donald Trump was elected 2 years ago to find out how his tenure has impacted them and you can stay with us for that another story which we're talking about today which people have already been messaging about is the situation with M. And S. Of course we know that they have been struggling They've already announced plans to close 100 shops were expecting results today it's fascinating because people do still use M. An S. But shown in Bristol says trousers for work and socks Cathy says bought 2 cable knit jumpers from M.N.'s mustard and hot pink great fit and also David heading from ride to Brighton the last thing I bought at Marks and Spencers was a pair of slippers and a toasted cheese sandwich and that's been the interesting thing is the food it has always sort of held things up over the last few years but it's been slipping hasn't Yeah I mean the idea was originally that they thought they were going to let food take over and sort of scale back the fashion and indeed as you say it's the food science that's kept things propped up but the last set of figures we had our food actually slipped and that's a worrying sign for a manager because if you let food take over if you don't sell it isn't much you want. You know I'm not really other than as you say underwear and think. Maybe that's what they need to concentrate on. Well don't forget messages 85058 if you are an eminent shopper if you have any advice for the boss and we want to know as well about whether or not your enthused by these U.S. Midterm elections are you like Louise was telling us yesterday you got your popcorn out you've been sat up all night or could you not care at all obviously this quite a lot of mention of these elections in the papers make it though by the time they went to print they didn't have the results. Quite a lot of other news around as well yeah I mean the Telegraph guys at least planned to sell bricks it deal to Britain my accuser shouted out cabinet this is your skeptics fear agreement in secret you know you're banned to get this more this I've next you know the other story that caught my mind come on also in the Telegraph another pipe as well meat axe because I have 6000 lives a year and they're talking about doubling the cost of a pack of bangers to about $4.00 pounds something in order to save us from the problems of red meat and carcinogenic problems in the future which I reckon will show you the N.H.S. a 1000000000 pounds a year my local farm shop you've got 84 percent me bankers. I don't understand all this. I would still pay for quid for a packet of sauce just to have to say I like Yes and I say bang a sandwich We've also got a story here in the Telegraph which talks about imperial brands which sell lumber and Butler etc Saying that they are stockpiling cigarettes in the U.K. To head off bricks it shortages and also in The Guardian this morning E.U. Stumbles in a plan to levy 3 percent digital tax on Internet giant says a handful of member states have announced their opposition which now means that those plans. At risk of failure. Well it is now $531.00. On digital B.B.C. 7 last week at the moment Venus is B.B.C. The vents in Coventry the latest polls the home side bar Radio 5 Live I this is wake up to money with Mickey clock and to me Donahue So let's take a look at some of the other business headlines this morning Pepsi Co is taking another step into the U.K. Snack market by launching a bid to buy Lincolnshire crisp company pipers crisp the international food and drinks firm already owns the Leicester based Warchus crisps and American firm to retirees regulators say a leading health care company could be close to collapse the Care Quality Commission says Allied Health Care only has funding in place until the end of the month it's warning of disruption to services and the European Commission could impose sanctions on Italy as a last result if they can't reach agreement over Rome's rule breaking budget but Brussels wants to avoid that option that's according to the E.U.'s economics commissioner Don't forget this morning if you want to get in touch messages 85058 or on social media you can use the hash tag wake up to money when we're talking about M. And S. Now and I have to say I'm learning a hj. Huge amount about a wake up to Money listener this morning Mickey let's take a look at listen to this here in Sheffield I brought socks and a time with dancing sprouts and 3 light settings it matches my Christmas should not jump around I'm not sure I may have to investigate that but this one's quite interesting Cologne in Brighton says N.S.A. They want to attract younger shoppers and do fashion but they rarely carry smaller sizes so you might see a really trendy item but they only have it in huge sizes they moan about high street struggles but when you ask for your size they tell you to go online so that's very interesting about the current situation in Marks and Spencer because we are expecting a couple of hours them to update the markets on the performance over the last 6 months now we know that they are just over a year into a turnaround plan that will see $100.00 stores close and it comes just days after it emerged the company's board had considered splitting the business into 2 food and clothing will coast again retail project manager at visual thinking retail consultancy and a former M N S employee has self Good morning Kirsty good morning so eminent US has not been having a particularly good time of it the last set of results we were told that they were going to have a completely seismic shift in the way that they do their business what can we expect from these results do you think. Being brutally honest are Wish I could wave a magic wand and say that they were going to be delivering some much better news you're absolutely right they are in the process of a transformational in a rebate but sadly I think today we're probably going to be looking at a gloomy picture once again and I think that food may also be affected to make his point earlier you know food to have recently announced and decline all say which is a bitter shame having heard some of your callers thought that they actually tend to preference food over clothing so yeah watch this space let's see what they say interesting because the interpretation of what Marsalis measures up to. Danny described as a turnaround plan you've described as a reboot Abra describe business as a cost cutting exercise which suggests to me that in actual fact I haven't got much idea about which direction they want to go in they're just trying to cut costs to be more efficient Oh Mickey you know you couldn't be more right there and I think you kind of hit the nail on the head what we really need these guys to do is pull their socks up and do something really really quickly and quite radically I don't like customers and I mean they rush to their customers are they have and I think the problem there is in what you've just said they don't really fully understand who their customers are anymore and I think you know I've often used the term when I refer to Marks and Spencer as trying to be all things to all men and I think to one of your earlier listeners point you know they're trying to attract more fashion focused customers but also please those that are long standing and or customers they can't see everybody I just don't think it's possible in the marketplace anymore it's quite interesting we've got a text from Vicki in London who says you know the top notch excellent the issue for her is they've got fall fall too much I was home the store you know she says you know I recently picked out a gorgeous dress but only spotted it was killing to pay for Head products I got lucky because usually there's just way too much to wade through they. Trying still to be all things to all people but there you go I mean it's interesting I only myself was out looking for something yesterday from my mom who's staying with me who couldn't get in store shoes after a pair of trousers she gave me has sorry she gave me the star she wanted on a slowly walking in there it was like fearing for my life I was worried I was going to get back out again there was just too much choice and I think that demonstrates a lack of confidence actually in not only the bar but in the way that they're presenting those products I think they've got to make it easier for customers to be able to navigate the stores make it more enjoyable when they're actually in there and deliver a standard in customer service that is reflective of old school M.N.'s and why we hold them in such hard regard I think the biggest problem overall for me is that actually customers are being extremely patient and have been extremely patient over many many years with what feels like empty promises and I think that actually they really need to put up some trees and make some significant changes to demonstrate you know their determination to get back to being absolutely one of the best on the high street well let's bring back in Jane Signum from Rathbun Investment Management Jane. We were hearing there that you know this has been a long time coming Kirstie was saying that people have been patient investors have also been patient what do they think the plan Well I mean I think you know because he's right we're not going to really know yet whether or whether it's successful or Norton and as Mickey said to some extent is a cost cutting exercise and obviously they're under the same pressures that all retailers are under and you kind of hope that while they're doing that cost cutting exercise they do get some focus back into to what it is they they stand for because as an investor you know this is a tough sector to be looking at a tall the high street is is tough whichever way you look and so even companies that are quite focused are struggling because of the move online and and those that really don't know where they're headed or under even more pressure so it's it's a. It's a hard place to to be putting your money if you're an investor 5 reached a fork in the road and I mean one road takes some on the other the fashion side the other one takes on the food and to be only slight They seem as though they don't really want to make a decision Yeah I mean whether they have to split the business as you say you know did they decide to go down one rate or another do they split it did they sell some of it off it cetera maybe they do I mean you know Archie Norman chairman said back in the summer you know it's one of the companies on a burning platform so they've got to reinvent themselves in a really kind of fundamental way maybe that does mean splitting or you know something really big to to make a sea change so that they start to focus on on what they're offering and Kirsty I mean one of the things which has come through on the message is we have this morning is they still have issues with their online service and we know that online is one of the places that they're going to focus on if they can get that right if they can get the clothing right if they can keep momentum with food can they turn things around. Yeah I think I hear you are do you hope so I think you know I think the biggest problem is that you know we've been effectively sold lots of like I said earlier empty promises and I think that was deadly parties getting a little bit jaded I'm frustrated I think that if they can do it radically and quickly I think that there is every chance that they can succeed but I think that it's going to take some real coverage and some very broad bold and brave decisions to actually get to that place you know look they have been making strides you know you only have to look at the way that you know they've they've launched the holy collection unfortunately you know it's fantastic but unfortunately it's quite small it's not going to make a significant dent within the business overall So you know you can see the attempts are being made I just think that needs to be bigger and it needs to be bold and it needs to be braver thank you very much indeed kiss to King lead researcher project manager at visual thinking retail consultancy will of course bring you those results after 7. Marks and Spencer jumpers recently cos they're not in generous these days I'm more like a beach ball than 20. I need something with a bit of extra give right from one retailer to another new look an ass yes it could close more than a $120.00 stores after a railing sells it fall in 3.7 percent in the 6 months to deceptive ember with us to look at the market says Jenny said I'm from Rathbone investment management and Jane this is another you know another day another story about a retailer the speed struggle we've known about this for for some time is already announced store closures but this is just another sign there's problems on our street wish Yeah it is an onion a coming but it's nearly a case is a business that kind of knows who its customers are in and has a focus but even if it stuck around because of you know the costs of leases and so on and this transition to online just makes the pain. We've even was so you know it's not it's not just M. And S. It's as you say it's widespread and it's not something that you can just suddenly switch on is it you know we're going to go to going to go online now we're going to sell clothes online rather than in shops he was outside of his cost because if you haven't done it in the past 5 years you must talk about the blade Well yes because you've got to put in you know the delivery centers the fulfillment the logistics you know it's a complicated business because although we just kind of click an order you know the underlying mechanics behind it a pretty complex and involves a lot of investment a lot of thought what worries me about the the retail gloom that we're seeing now is that Ammi weeks we got left to Christmas you know this is the time that retailers if it in a might money market and this sort and some are going to really miserable Christmas yes you know no I think you're right I mean we've you know this year has been sort of unprecedented in terms of the precious over leases that the you know the pace has picked up with that transition to online you know all the retailers ready because they've been on to so much pressure as you say are they ready for their peak selling season and some will be quite a few won't be just a quick line on the current says and perhaps you can tell me what's going on because I'm still getting bleeps from America about the midterms so I'm not quite sure what the currency is doing and I'm but the pound strength in the dollars weakness. It is in the case of the parent is it down to bricks a house or U.S. Election worries or both I think it's a bit of both I mean it's not a huge move in terms of the strength but obviously the pound is is a bit stronger certainly they're talking to various people in markets they seem to think we are getting closer to some kind of deal and I think you know as as always markets like a bit of certainty so so I think really it's more about pound strength than dollar weakness but but it's a bit of both and I mean the volatility of the pound or the the weakness of the pound is likely to continue for some months yet Well I think until we you know we do know with we've got a deal or whether we haven't yet yes it will. I think is a general feeling that probably the pound is a bit oversold you know that it's a bit too cheap in the actually with it assuming we get some kind of deal that actually there would be a bit of a rally but we've got a way to go yet. Many thanks for that joining Signum there from Rathbone investment management. For news of the past life support this is B.B.C. 5 Live we've got some money it's 547 now with the latest 5 Live news here's Dr McLeod midterm elections have left the Republicans in control of the U.S. Senate's while the Democrats have won a majority in the House of Representatives a 17 year old will be in court later accused of murdering a teenager outside a tube station in London and 6 men arrested over footage showing a model of Grenfell tower being burned have been released under investigation on the roads the M 62 in Cheshire is closed westbound from Junction 8 at Burton wood road the A 570 at Junction 7 that's because of a lorry fire for the diversion followed the hollow square symbol this is B.B.C. Radio 5 live over a little while on the B.B.C. Sounds. So it has been a mix nights for both Democrats and Republicans in the US midterms the Democrats have taken. Control of the House of Representatives but the Republicans look like they'll definitely retain the Senate well asked to Donald Trump won the election 2 years ago we spoke to Steve step founder and owner of the National audio company in Springfield Missouri and Steve has joined us again this morning good morning Steve how are you and good morning I'm fine how are you yeah not too bad a tool thank you let's have a quick listen what you told is 2 years ago to Donald Trump took her control of the presidency I don't think Donald Trump knows how to go about the has said he's going to stimulate the economy but he's also said he's going to cut taxes and undergo all this large spending all the infrastructure we need to do that but it's going to also inflate our national debt tremendously and at the same time he said he's going to improve our economy you don't do that by running your nation further in the. Same they've obviously that was you 2 years ago what have you felt has happened over the last 2 years have your concerns been met or have you been pleasantly surprised. My concerns have been confirmed over the last 2 years although our economy is doing well and unemployment is down the wages are not rising accordingly and it is big business has basically been profiting small business is suffering as is the agricultural business so it's pretty much confirms what I expected the last 2 years and I'm happy with the results today because I believe finally we are putting the brakes on this runaway administration and maybe regaining some sanity do you think things with the economy would have been any different if we tied a Democrat in the house. I believe they would have you had seen the last 8 years with President Obama and the economy had recovered from the recession in spite of the fact the Republicans have blocked every attempt it made to stimulate the economy so we were coming out of the recession anyway that I think has continued We've had no drastic disasters in the economy since then I think that with the terrorists due to strike about the 1st here people here by and large do not understand how badly we're going to be hurt by those tariffs small businesses in agriculture particularly as you will see in Europe as well so I'm holding my breath but I'm hoping that with some sanity returning maybe we can moderate some of these policies Steve tell us a bit about your business and how it's been affected in terms of the nuts and bolts day to day running of things well the 1st month that President Trump was in office the U.S. Government cancelled a contract that we had that was worth a $1000000.00 a year to our business we laid off 14 audio engineers we were basically making audio books and magazines for the blind and visually handicapped all over the country that were distributed free through the Library of Congress we lost that contract and I had to find a place to take our business and we could survive Fortunately it looks like we're going to be able to do that but his 1st month of office was a $1000000.00 loss to us we're still trying to recover from that but some businesses have done that really well and as Donald Trump makes ample we've had Disney giving that 125000 with his one time $1000.00 bonus we've also had Chrysler giving their employees about $2000.00 extra So what he promised to do in some cases he has delivered yes primarily to major corporations and that is again what I feared before that the benefits would accrue to the big corporations and to the very wealthy and to the rest of us were on our own so you know for you is that yes there is there is wealth they're being created the economy is doing well but there are only a few people who are actually benefiting from this I think that's exactly what's happened yes or. Jamie when you hear businesses in the United States. Like Steve talking the way they are I mean obviously we've got the issue of the trade you said earlier that this change from the mid terms is not going to impact on the way Donald Trump can set out trade policy what's your feeling of things. Yeah I mean I think some of these changes have benefited is as you know your guest is saying they have benefits some of the larger corporations I think it is much more mixed further down the economy. But you know this this issue as to whether or not the trade sank this the tariffs actually start to really bite obviously looks are they going to and if there is no constraint on Donald Trump over that that is one of the prime misuse that markets are really worried about so you know this sort of Cold War with China if it really becomes a much more can more of a problem in terms of trade then that's going to have an effect on absolutely everybody in the economy with their consumer or running a business but what do you do with the Chinese joint I mean do you just ignore the problem and how they'll go away because I have a bet we are the they don't we needed to stand or someone they did stand up to them Donald Trump seems as though he's the fellow doing it oh sure I mean you know there are reasons why you know the tariffs have been introduced I mean it's not to deny that but it but it is going to have an effect on on trade and I always do don't know yes trade wars absolutely absolutely So I kind of you know it was going to happen at some point obviously there's been a concern about you know intellectual property theft and so on and Donald Trump said well you know I'm not going to put up with this any longer. Stephen once beam interesting about Donald Trump's presidency is that clearly he spoke to people who was struggling to get jobs and in a lot of cases he has delivered on his promises you have to accept that at least I think that's true to some extent I think he spoke to people who were fearful who were distrustful of the future and I think that he has played upon those fears in some cases he has delivered jobs cases he's lost jobs one of the the carrier air conditioner factory that he said he had saved ended up going to Mexico anyway a plant down here in southeast Missouri one of the largest naval manufacturing plants in the world looks like it's going to shut down because of its tariffs so it's a mixed bag and it always will be no one action will will be effective either positively or negatively throughout the whole economy but I think it's a very mixed bag here so far the 1st 2 years. OK Steve step thank you so much for joining us this morning we were supposed to be talking to Julie Rice Prince the owner of Bradfield concrete design who also spoke to us on the program a couple of years ago but whether she's out celebrating because the Republicans have retained the Senate or she's commiserating because the Democrats have taken the House of Representatives I'm not entirely sure we will try and talk to her later on in the week make it's certainly been an interesting evening has met Yeah you know whatever criticisms are Donald Trump he does seem to live in the occasional up unease he's someone there are can Larkin's with a lot of businessmen interviewed or at Daly's with over the years that leave your big gob smacked to be honest but they seem to you know he seems to get results a lot of people in work and the criticism of course is you know there are a lot of people who work in the U.S. But they're not necessary by the great deal which is probably not good for the economy but you can draw those parallels between here and the U.S. Moment right absolutely Marmite Well we're going to talk now about one of the U.K.'s most successful tech entrepreneur as he told a new B.B.C. Pucca asked about the danger of the announcement how founding a business means you have to be able to deal with failure Dennis Hastert is a leading expert on official intelligence built up his own 1000000 pound company deep mind before selling it to Google Speaking to come out and run Silva for the product the disrupters he talks about learning about the business the hard way after the success of his 1st game theme park they still want to be a good idea just because you passionately believe in it that doesn't make a good idea that's one of the many things I learned from my 1st company you know I before that I just thought more ambitious is better Yeah right because it the bigger the idea the better the more you push everybody the better and if if if everybody is on board with that you are talented people then we must be able to cheat. It but actually you can get self delusional thinking you can actually over inspire people weirdly man which is something I found actually to the point where they're not thinking rationally about what they want what they could actually achieve in a certain amount of time you know we bit off too much you want to pick what dimension of innovation are you going to push hard why try to do the Ixia is innovate on all dimensions simple things right so I wanted a new company I didn't you know I never got a company before so trying to do that pretty inexperienced age I wanted to create a new graphics engines new AI engines make a statement artistic statement about the game yeah I could just one thing pop to Lyra and that might have been better but at the time I was all co-op in like what I need to make an artistic statement as well and only sort of people in care about the creative arts make sequels right obviously now it is ridiculous because you've done all the hard work to innovate in the 1st game why not you know you should leverage that. And then look at the most like human what it was but it was too idealist I think it wasn't so much cooler commercial always being too idealistic just thinks of the doghouse and well yes well OK so the lockout Yes or the dark hours was we saw I think he's games and they were supposed to be done in 2 years and then 4 years later and still no so I finish because you know there was too much to do right and we are working here now we are you would take us out every hour there was and I made my whole team was doing that it was just not sustainable and I would say we would do for 6 months and then it would be 2 years later we were doing you know any any it was bad what you realize now is that a lot of those hours of pain that we did didn't make any difference to the outcome . Well that was. Dennis has a base the expert from deep mine talking to Kemal Ahmed and Rohan Silva for the podcast the disrupters available now on the B.B.C. Sounds as if you're just joining us this morning the latest from the United States following the U.S. Midterms we know that the Democrats have taken control of the health all Representatives but the Republicans have held on to the Senate it's certainly been an interesting election hasn't Mickey Yes And as I do it will trump It's always interesting when you agree with a run up Marmite is definitely the phrase that we can use to refer to Donald Trump thank you very much for all your messages this morning that fit from Wake up to money back this is a. Genius doing this is B.B.C. Radio. One News Day November the 7th. 600 hours of raining outside welcome to B.B.C. Radio Oxford starting the B.B.C. News rocks which are now from serving a meat tax could prevent around 220000 deaths and save more than $30000000000.00 pounds in health care costs around the world each year so you say Oxford researches their studies based on evidence linking consumption of red meat like beef lamb and pork to an increased risk of heart disease stroke diabetes and cancer scientists set out to estimate the level of health tax needed to make up for health care costs associated with eating meat in $149.00 regions around the world but lead researcher Dr Marcus Springman from the Nuffield department of Population Health at Oxford University says this isn't about telling people what to eat when we want to restrict the consumption of drugs and process it but if we know that it leads to negative health care because by having greater. Health care expenditure that you will be as well you can consider anything else but at least pay for the cost that would need to accrue for you to continue consuming it the U.S. Midterm elections seen as a referendum on President Trump's 1st 2 years have seen the Democrats take control of the House of Representatives for the 1st time in 80 is a Democrat majority in the Lower House is likely to frustrate some of the president's legislative plans however Republicans are on course to strengthen their control of the Senate's leading president trying to declare the night a tremendous success former Republican National Committee chair Gilmore agrees I think it's not helpful that the Democrats are taking the House of Representatives but the Republicans have held onto the Senate there was really a real desire on the part of the left in the United States that the selection be a big repudiation of Donald from it isn't there was no blue wave there is no great repudiation so matter of fact I think this is not a bad night actually for Donald Trump if you're just waking up to catch up on it also fall the Democrats again just over $25.00 seats in the house for the party's last 4 Senate seats the Republicans including Florida and Indiana and the Democrats have picked up a number of governorships Oxford's covered market has seen a foot full increase of 5 percent his business rates have been slashed for the majority of still hold as it comes as the city council announced a $3100000.00 pound cash injection to carry out repairs and refer Bushman's to the reef floor Graham McDonald runs ice cream gelateria in the capital market he says businesses are benefiting from the Westgate effect I think the figures are certainly very very encouraging and I think that we've we've all benefited from the Westgate effect I think what we've noticed really is that the majority of people coming in all the locals that we. Are seeing P.V.C. Needs has led the 21 people have been found in a refrigerated lorry that arrived in East Sussex from France has thought they were from Vietnam creeping cleated 15.
