On b.b.c. Radio every Wednesday night from 9 am and out for an hour at the best new music to host the sounds by the freshest offering from my head only had a chance. Introducing play with Ellen Wednesday night from not on b.b.c. Radio came to ship. But in a tough skin we've winter coat and I'm really excited to welcome Greg MacDonald from King Jack La even stayed a good evening how he said it and I'm not too bad I'm concerned for save on line I know you're doing all right so when I get well soon in Syria Yeah by. At least she's not contaminating. So you have some I mean and I would say well thank God she's not here. Now we don't mean it seem we love you we love you really so Greg we just came into this t.j. Was about a year ago I guess it probably is now yeah we saw you in the camper van and at Cambridge fake festival essentially stalked you around the sort of folk festival is we really this summer and I say so what we've been up to what was the thing about you I'm a very busy summer so we had back on the start of May May May bank holiday weekend we launched the band so and until then everything we've done have been an acoustic trio and then we expanded that up to a 6 piece band for the summer festivals surrounding Paul Richardson drums Fred's house fame. Case and Saul Bailey on melodeon. I did our 1st gig down in Rochester sweeps festival start of May And then we've done loads of festivals so we've been all over it's been busy yeah and you just got to start a new towards it next week yeah so it's no rest really the yes straight into an autumn tour and we begin on Friday on the Golden Hind which is a ship in London Bridge I wound up so start starting on board the Golden Hind and then we've got a few gigs in this part of the world as well where it's a week on Wednesday we're in the lead 16th of October and then I think we're in Hitchin on this Sunday are there which may not make the gig list yet a lot of the excellent booking also got the 2nd of November the stables mount King Yes that's right yeah. So and also it's really a very small because you're tall starts on the goal behind and ends at the Golden Hind as it looks on the left like hers Yeah so you know if you think Goldeneye in the Golden I think. We should have done something that should have made a big thing of that well yeah exactly I thought that was a plum thing so I guess like that's a Cambridge folk club gig and it was in November but that's not that's the following Novembers That's in 20 times. A very long tall that long tour yeah how many people from the full band you taking on tall real blow it just depends on the gig really so we do some of them the sort of default line it really is a trio that an acoustic trio that's guitar and fiddle and either the bass guitar and 3 voices or if it's with salt as well it lead to go up to being a 4 piece with a melodeon. It just basically depends on who can make the gig really who. You can get the time off work and family and that So yeah it depends on the gig so you can there because of the song Yeah I thought I'd play I thought I'd place on called The Night Shift just so I break this out in the winter really when when once the once it starts once it gets that time of year when when you arrive at a gig it's already done. And if you load you load your equipment in in the UK once it gets to that time of year feels to me like Ok we're in a different place now and I break this song out with you know when the time of year comes the night sure. The Sun. Must. Be the. Case. When you. When you've. Says it's. Cut it. Grit. In the. All of your voice it's just yes I'm testing Rich thank you Mickey's research. Great. We. Playing the album over the last year was a. Pile them as are the plans for a new album there is and it's happening right now we have begun we have begun work these things take such a long time yeah I don't like to make promises about when it will be because I've done it before and then there's the like even if I record it took a very very long time and we all remember when we started that we sat down the 1st morning making that record Ville Philby I was producing it and we sat down and Phil's kitchen and drew up a list of everything we were going to do to get the record made and I sort of ran down this list in my naivety and said 6 weeks work I reckon looking at their fill sort of looks over it's a 6 months mate realistically yet and it took us 6 years so it. Has to make the circuit so I don't want to make promises but I hope by next summer when I've a record a 2nd record basically the set that we've been playing all this summer at the festivals if you've got lots of new material working on that's a nice stuff yeah yeah Ok yeah so it's like involved all your new music involves all of you yeah yeah. Yeah basically as it's what we've played during the festivals this summer so it's come together quite organically it's just something that we if we felt after the 1st verse festival you know it needs something that's a bit more you know so we missing something that maybe in 6 a or we could do with a song that's just a more of a beat thing to finish with we drag them in on that basis so it's you know end up hopefully feeling like going to see the band excellent festival so you can you get the inspiration I want something in 68 so I just you just go oh I'm just going write something in 6 like what do you store things up this time of my life so. I couldn't see much more useful really and instead what I've done is I just I just built hundreds and hundreds of songs so I got a lot I got a lot you know if we need to meet 68 it's quite nice to have that reason to go to sit down and write something. Is going to bring up. Variety 2 to the set so you can go either way and of course you got as you mentioned you got Saul Bailey playing for you now Scott Squeezebox fanatic really saying the ladies on the telly called him because he's actually been nominated for the young folk award tonight indeed he will not not just infuriatingly talented and handsome but noisy a singer youthful as well as nominated for the Radio 2 young folk award no less than a yeah yeah so you don't have the final I think I think you know I think it's a yeah you know it's like a gig you know they do a gig and. Yeah and then it's I don't know whether it's decided that night or at the folk I think the folklore does the next days and I think it's in the evening I think there and I think as we're seeing and I have actually been actually going so I'm probably the young one as well yeah. I should yeah we see the car we were on the train yeah I got an early train thankfully will get there in time and sort of thing all things I don't know if we can have a. Quiet drink or 12 depending. Only one obviously yet so festivals like some of you got me festivals booked in already and we don't know we just wanted to in the moment we're going to South Petherton. Yeah yeah yeah and then back to suites and we've got you know it's. A full festival summer next year yeah so yeah in your dream world what would be the best anywhere in the world which festival would you most love to get picked up. It would be a toss up between the main stage at Glastonbury and. Taking the band to really Folk Festival I think one of the other if you're listening usually. I like. Things like a great answer to me also as you probably had earlier in the pack just talking to Jamie's formal if I could Tom tell us a bit about your guitar Well I mean I'm not I'm not a guitar buff at all you know this is a this is just a bog standard Martin D.M.'s D.M.'s. If if if propagates Arissa listening but I'm just a strong a really I don't know I think I'm no more than you. I'm not really no I'm not even that really you are you're very good excellent so I think it's time we played a track from your 2017 album that we're talking about like the evening fire feeling very autumnal tonight so tell us about the inspiration behind this track Ok with this song like even if it just began for me really with this image of faces around the fire and then I just started filling in the details and I wanted I wanted something that spoke to kind of to the moment we're in and at least the moment we were in at that time it was sort of in the throes of austerity and there was a lot of homelessness. This is greatly on the increase and I wanted to write something that you know had something to say something I love about folk music down the ages is that even before people could read and write you know there was this there was this means of ordinary people telling their stories and having having a say you know so it was in that sort of spirit and then we sort of feel the details in from there when we came to record it. Feel better when Steve Knightley sing on the song and Steve sang a verse and the verse I remember that I'd written for him I remember him saying if you times and it was I think that we had a character pull who at the time worked in I think worked in car repairs thing that thing and. Yeah Steve wasn't having a didn't like the line right. Insisting they were going to pull going to work you know it doesn't feel good to you don't sound right so you want him working something else any money and bike repairs or something I did I come exactly with Yeah but we argued it for I don't know a few years and in the end we settled on I think it worked in spares Oh thank you Rob You can see. That's how we ended up there so you from that 2017 album it's given Jack would like to the evening fire. Radio Cambridge. This is the fake show you hear on b.b.c. Radio with me make a start when cars so use punk Polian bad same thing to see but I'm ready because we've still got great McDonald live in the studio from. Yeah they say you mentioned in a Greg that Phil be abound we've had many gigs recently of we just did well in the summer Phil Phil wanted to just do one festival so we did trees before the festival which was absolutely fantastic the whole to speak of ever done it was. On the Sunday afternoon middle one kind of day August. And it was about $34.00 something crazy I mean it was it was and stay on the way up to the stage steps up to the stage and it was like every time you step up a step is that you could feel the temperature increase by. Hiring it got it only you know. Yes it was it was. It was true but it was a humid gig in a tent it was in a tent as well so the hot escape that I haven't done for sure right so I would just going to quickly hear what's going on on the right and then we'll come back to for some more live music across Cambridge. B.b.c. Radio Cambridge share. In Cambridge a few road closures 2 more new about to happen from 9 p. Endless evening the a one is going to be shutting for roadworks overnight till 6 am it's night northbound will be clues from but towards. And the southbound a one closing from welcome break down to Brunton out the a 14 away span that's going to be closing from Branson how to Ellington junction 21 to junction 20 the westbound a 14 also shutting 6 mile bottom junction 36 to get at Junction 31 a 4 to 8 that's closing as well at 9 pm Eastern and Mattingly to Milton on the a 14 junction 33 all back open around 6 am That's the latest time at the mall. If I can hear on b.b.c. Radio came a chair we've Greg McDonald from clean Jack welcome again so yes even as sing some of the track now on the outside I sing a song I think I'll sing a new one so this is this is pretty new one I must mention Ikey before I ever do a song is going to do you think this Christmas and this is really organized report drivable which it's a 12 gigs of Christmas Ok All right so this is the 22nd it's December and we're going to play in 12 in yours. In 12 hours 120 while the news and 12 hours on the 22nd Sunday 22nd December around Cambridge town center we've got 4 or 5 of them get like lined up so far and hope to get the rest in place in the next few weeks and. In aid of Macmillan so we raise money for charity and so if you mean if you're in town and really if you Christmas shopping is done in time 22nd of December look out for us and come in have a drink somewhere so they sort of café bars pubs and all sorts of yeah I think we're looking at possibly doing most mostly pubs I think it will be through the day so what's not to like a pub crawl. It's not Christmas early is really what it could have to yes get on the park and really come along. So we get to see this isn't going to seize the night this is new if you could dedicate this today to the. Everyone who went down to London for the I'm allowed to do my loud on the d.c. To do that yeah Ok it's dedicated to many of the protests in London today the seas the night. Really good. People must catch a.
