Dominance in that one religion promoted a tolerance of islam at a time when it is not the norm. Throughout the world they are peace loving people like you and me. We believe that everyone is a child of god. Reporter being muslim in america means being viewed sceptically and answering for the actions of a few. Mormons know what that is like. If you had an experience in your faith being mischaracterised you start with a skepticism. Reporter jim represents the church of latter day saints known as the lds or Mormon Church on the salt lake inner roundtable. If you get to know people, see their values and see how their families work it makes good relations easier. It goes a long way. Especially in this center in westvilly city. West valley city. They dont look at it as us versus them. Some of the commonalties go back more than app century. In the beginning of islam. Muslims were taken out off mecca, and some say they were taken out of certain areas and boycotted. Theres a lot of historical similarities. Reporter settled in 1847, mormon pioneers were led west afterpersecution. There were calls to ban mormon presentation. The right of violence serving in a missionary formed an understanding at home. They are willing to go to other places and learn about other faiths through the missionaries. They are willing to incorporate what they have learnt, when te come home. That is why they are at home in utah joining me in studio is a professor, the chair of the Theology Department at fordham university. In detroit rabbi jason miller, an entrepreneur and popular member of the rabbis without borders, and a member of the clergy without borders and director of muslim life and chaplaincy at Georgetown University just for definitional purposes, what do you consider to be religious identity. What does it mean to identify someone as a practicing muslim. For me, a practicing muslim is someone who believes in three principles. That love is the essence of faith. Forgiveness is the essence of religion, and humility is the essence of humanity. For me, islam stands on the concept of love, forgiveness and humility. The idea of to believe in god you have to practice specific values of love, forgiveness and compassion. Briefly, imam, could you explain to our american audience how it is that those concepts generally dont get to be mentioned when we look at what is regarded as extremists in the name of the religion, practice violence. You know, muslims are clear about where they stand. We believe that violence has no religion, terrorism has no religion, and those advocating violence in the name of islam do not speak on behalf of the koran, or behalf of mohammed, peace be with him, and do not speak on behalf of a faith teaching justice and love and compassion. We want to distinguish before islam, as a religion. Not every muslim or those that claim to be muslim practice the values. And not every jew what religion means in every day life. Should wanton religious beliefs dictate work practices, here in america we have the county Clerk Kim Davis that refused to issue the marriage licence for same sex couples. What do they say about Something Like that . I think when it comes to not just religion but faith in general. There is always going to be difficulties that we in america face when we try to allow our faith to coexist with our every day life. Of course it includes a work life balance. In most cases, employers are understanding that the makeup of their businesses includes men and women of different faiths. And that includes having different holidays and different dietary needs and religious practices that might require muslims to have the ability during the day to go and pray. It might mean that jewish workers had the ability to have kosher food, christian and other rites. In most cases what we have seen in america have businesses that are very tolerant and understanding. We live in the 21st century of political sworn 27 march. In most cases employees try to allow their workers to be comfortable with their religion, that being said, we have to understand that sometimes we cant a lou our religion allow our religion to be the priority. We make choices every day. To you, lets talk about the public sphere. Do you agree with critics that say government laws and regulations are interfering, particularly report to teachings in the past week. We saw the Supreme Court taking up the case of the Little Sisters of the poor rejecting a government effort to attack contraceptive insurance. The Little Sisters would have to pay for it. They objected to the principle. How do you reconcile that kind of situation. Thats a great question, and this has been something that has been in the news for eight or nine years, since the debate on the Affordable Care act began. There was a question about reconciling liberties with that of the government. What is often confused in the debate. We talk about the American Value of religious freedom. And the first people that came to america were not seeking religious freedom for everyone, but for themselves. Most of the first colonies wanted a space to practice their religion. Theres a complex history to the debate in america. All too often sometimes the historical ideals are invoked by folks who may not feel the nuances in them. As to this question. We are living in a space, those of us who are religious, those who are not. Where we are trying to be part of a society that recognise are recognises and values the differences of everyone. That refers to therell be times when people need to go along. Therell be times when people need to push back. The courts are in the middle of figuring that out now. As the rabbi was saying. There were times when a religious person will say i cant go further, and there are times when a religious person will say i cant impose my values on the rest of the society. Does that go to rendering what is assess areas. Seize areas. Jesus was making a political point. The Little Sisters of the poor case that you referred to is interesting. The question is how much socalled cooperation with what they consider to be immoral activity is permissible. And even within the frame mark of theology. Many people say the Little Sisters are so far removed that they are not involved in sponsoring it. They disagree with that. The courts are there to look at what is appropriate in the First Amendment in a pleuritic society. The Pew Research System has polled americans on shifting views. In 2014 is found a quarter of American Adults claimed no religious affiliations. Among those unaffiliated 61 say they believe in god in some form. Thats down from 10 from 7 years earlier. Among all adults religiously affiliated and not. Only 55 say they pray in some manner. Down by 58 . Let me pose this question to you, professor. Why do you think fewer americans are identifying as religious today. The key to the statistic for me is about reliage yosty versus spirituality. We are living in a time when institutions are coming under suspicion. Whether that be the government or the police forces. Religious institutions, with the scandals and revelations not only in the Roman Catholic church, over the past few decades. They dont have the credibility they may be used to. The numbers that you talked about show while americans may move away from organised religion, theres a dire for mistaken so connect to something beyond themselves. That will poll shows an increase in those identifying as nonchristians, including muslims, have you observed more religious attachment in your circles, and if so, why. This has to speak about different experiences in america. Visavis the middle east and asia. I have seen more Movement Forward moving to islam. I think the problem is not moving forward or back. Closer or further. The problem is is the message of our religious institutions relevant to the lives of our young men and women. I dare to say that many of our religious institutions within the case seems sometimes irrelevant. We speak of dogma and relevance. We speak more of theology. After visavis. The here. And for people to move closer. I think we need to reconstruct our understanding of god and script tours, and we need to make it relevant to the challenges of day to day affairs of young men and women. How often do we speak of issues that matter to women and men. Equal pay, issues of freedom. The issues are big real issues that many of the clergy run away from, or shy away from. We need to put them on the table. And that is what will bring them across. I give you the final word on that issue. I agree with the professor. When you look at the pew research study, which i had a chance to take a look at. Theres a focus on the jewish people. In america, i think we have to compare relage yosty and spirituality. And more American Jews may move away. Theres a lot of blending and new ways of looking at religion and spirituality in america. That includes, as the imam says social action and environmentalism. And theres more blending. Progressive views are becoming more observe able to. The orthodoxy is growing at a rapid pace and more are expressing religion, jewish religion in new ways in the 21st century. Thank you all for joining us on al jazeera. And before we go here is a look at other stories well watch in the week ahead. Monday former guatemala president molina will be in court for the First Time Since his arrest last september on corruption charges. Hopefully you were in parts of the country where the weather was great. Tell us about the rest of the story. Not all the country had a great easter weekend, especially to the south and across the stram plains, moving no central plains, moving into the high river valley. Especially in areas where we dont see the rain. Right now, rain and showers is moving across parts of northern florida, up to georgia, and into the carolinas, and it continues to be a problem as we go through the sooeftenl hours evening hours. Notice the thunder storms starting to pop up as they make their way to ohio. Theres a lot of watches and warnings. From ohio to indiana. We are talking about a tornado warning. What will happen is well see a move through parts of cincinnati. As we go through other hours. We are back to the western sea board. That will continue, and well not get a break, especially in new york, until we get to 4 oclock or 5 oclock. Out to the west. That will be the big problem in terms of snow. Another system moving in. Looking across parts of utah, and as we go into wednesday. We talk about wyoming where we expect a foot to a foot and a half of snow across the area. Now, as we go into april. Well see a pattern across the east. We have had a lot of above average temperatures here it the west. Temperatures will be above average, and seattle will see unseasonably warm temperatures.
