We look at the syrian governments barrel Bombing Campaign in aleppo. Im in new york, well take you to the tribeka Film Festival, movie makers eager to impose the critics. Around 290 people, many teenage students, are still missing off the sworn coast of south korea. A ferry carrying 475 people capsized more than 24 hours ago. Divers are battling strong winds and murky conditions as they search for survivors. Hopes of finding anyone alive is fading. Harry fawcett is in jindo, the center of rescue operations and has the latest. Day two of the operation, and rescue crews are in little doubt where most of the missing must be. For all the boats, helicopters and divers, getting access to the ferry, let alone locating anyone inside is an enormous challenge. Fast swirling currents, poor visibility, and the depths of the Access Points made for slow progress. Something the president expressed concern about during an unannounced visit to the site. The parents have been through so much the the ordeal is gruelling. We are just repeating what they are saying on the news. They say there has been too few dives, but time is running out for their children. Frustration fuelled by unverified reports of Text Messages and facebook posts coming from inside the ferry. We think 60 to 70 people are alive. When we talk to them, they worry about whose job it is, and pass it on to someone else. Many of the parents on the dock stood vigil, and through another day. What they want is what authorities have not been able to provide them real news of the fate of their loved ones. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the disaster. Police are investigating the captain. Local media says he left the ship while his publishing address system was telling others to stay on board. A huge response to a National Tragedy made up of hundred of individual ones. Lets get the latest from adrian brown, al jazeera, who joins us on the phone from jindo. What is the latest . Its dusk in south korea. Its been a difficult day for the divers, because the currents have been strong indeed, making it perilous for the divers. Theres some 500 divers taking part in this operation. We have had heavy rain and strong winds, and the visibility in the water has been very poor. Its murky and muddy. As we heard in harrys report, the focus of the parents anger at the moment the parents of the children still missing is the captain. He has been questioned today by the by the coast guard along with several other crew members. And, of course, during the coming days hell be speaking to some of the survivors who have told of how they were told to stay put on the boat. Even when it was tilting dangerously after hitting an unknown object in the water. Now, the president , as we heard, made a brief unannounced visit today. She didnt get a chance and was not able to meet the families gathered, huddled on the dock. The Prime Minister, when he came had a bottle of water thrown at him, it shoes and illustrates how the despair is turning to anger among the parents. What makes the accident distressing is among those on board were High School Students, and poignant stories emerging from those who survived and those yet to be found, some messages. Particularly those yet to be found. The newspaper published Text Messages sent by children to parents. There was one in particular that said this may be the last chance i get to tell your mum that i love you. I think well see emotion along those lines in the days and hours to come. And the emotion here in this part of south korea is raw at the moment. Once it dawns on people that, you know, there are unlikely to be survivors, that emotion will be profound indeed. A sad situation. Adrian brown with the latest from jindo in south korea. Leaders from the u. S. , e. U. , russia and ukraine are meeting to end the crisis in ukraine. Diplomats are sitting down for talks, including the secretary of state john kerry, e. U. Foreign policy chief katherine ashton. Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov from rushe, and its ukrainian counterpart. Live to nick spicer in geneva. Its the first time they have gathered, all the parties since the crisis in ukraine began. What are the expectations . They are low, going by off the record comment. Unnamed comments from american officials who are, along with the russians important players around the table heempt at the hotel behind me. Positions are so far apart the rush jrns saying that the government in ukraine is not legitimate. It was installed by the americans, it was came to power through violence, and caused the president to flee the country, and denies the accusations that it is doing anything to stir up unrest, then you have the ukrainians, americans and europeans saying, no, you are stirring up lots of un rest, as you did in crimea. Sending in possibly special forces troops, certainly Intelligence Officers to organise the people, the selfstyled selfdefence forces who have been taking over local administrative buildings. Demands are hard to reconcilrec we have the russians saying, we want you to come up with a new constitution that is federal, giving autonomy to the eastern regions, and then the ukrainians and the europeans saying, moscow, we want you to stop meddling in ukraines domestic politics, and pull your troops from the borders, because you are trying to determine the destiny of ukraine and not respecting its sovereignty. Hard to see how any progress could be made without another meeting such as today. Russias president called kievs decision to use force against separatists in ukraine a crime. Speaking on russian television, Vladimir Putin dismissed accusations that his troops are in Eastern Ukraine. No. Translation this is nonsense, there are no Russian Troops in the east. Theres no special forces and no instructors. They are all local citizens, and the best proof is that the people have taken off their masks. They are the owners of the land, and they will not leave. Al jazeeras peter sharp is in moscow. This is Vladimir Putins annual phonein on russian television, and its ongoing. Hes been talking a lot about the crisis in ukraine. Thats right. Obviously its happening on the same day as the fourparty talks. No coincidence there, i think. He was asked also, would he send his troops into ukraine. Dont forget, n. A. T. O. And the west say he has 40,000 men stationed along the boarder. Would he send them in to crimea. He said, look, crimea, there was 100 support from the pop u legs in crimea, for Russian Troops, in the Eastern Ukraine, its about 50 50. He reminded the west, ominously, perhaps, that he has the permission from the upper house, the senate in moscow to move his troops into Eastern Ukraine if he felt it was necessary to protect the safety of the russianspeaking minority. And he said, in one sentence i hope i dont need to take that permission. Elsewhere in the talk he said that he was convinced and certain that they could reach a Mutual Understanding with ukraine. He said we have too much at stake not to be able to do that. Two different messages coming out of the talkathon so far. Thank you very much for bringing us the latest there on Vladimir Putins address on russian television. Lets look at what is happening inside ukraine. Three prorussian activists have been killed. It happened after troops were repelled. A crowd of 300 men were armed with stun grenades and molotov cocktails. The army had no choice but to respond to the result. Lets go live to hoda abdelhamid, in the eastern ukrainian city. The prorussian groups in Eastern Ukraine seem emboldened. They are occupying government buildings. And show no signs of backing down. They have no intentions to back down until all demands are met. On top of the list is demands for a federal system, and that the russian language become the second official language of ukraine. They are emboldened. When you look at the map and see the cities where they seize buildings, it has not been done haphazardly, its almost in a Straight Line from donetsk, and they went further east, they have control of the main security building. And as you mentioned earlier, now they have a presence in an area where theres an important port. Actually, i asked why there, and they wanted to make sure that the Ukrainian Forces can not bring anything in to this area from the sea. Here in slovyansk, theres a railway station. In kramatorsk, about 20 minutes drive from here, theres an airfield. So they have a plan, and they its likely when you ask them, will you continue, they say yes, we will continue. And are emboldened by the fact that now they have weapons. We saw the show of force in the center of slovyansk, when they drove in the six armoured vehicles seized from the ukrainian paratroopers, they also have weapons and amun illega ition. Thank you for the update, hoda abdelhamid. Still ahead old, faded and plagued by illness. What is driving a 77yearold president to run for a fourth time in office. Taliban targets. Afghan interpreters helped foreign troops and fear for their lives. Real madrid celebrates their success with their fans. That and more in 30 minutes. First to nigeria, where the military says it rescued dozens of girls. The School Principal denies theyve been freed. Around 100 students were taken from their school in chibok. A lot of confusion about the fate of these girls. What are you hearing . Thats right. This confusion stems if the fact that the military authorities in the capital have not given the media or the Public Information about how this plane that this claim that they that this claim that they rescued 120 girls. They issued a statement that 129 girls from the secondary school were captive. Within three or four hours a statement was released saying they rescued 121 again with no explanation. Also a source speaking to the agency wanting to remain anonymous said after the military brief came out, he was aware that 100 girls were captive, and a governor of borno said only 14 have been release the. Its not been possible to independently verify what the military say. Civil society, media, human rights organizations cant travel to borno state because its dangerous. It will lead to some doubt. Whats been the reaction of the families of the girls, and what are they being told by the authorities . Well, they are extremely angry about the situation, and obviously traumatized. What the Authorities Say is that eight girls are missing, but its incredibly difficult to get direct communication with the families. This is a remote area. The capital of the state is a little bit more urbanized, but this village is 100km away from the capital, and much of the information released is being released through the authorities. Thank you very much. Thank you for that update. Staying with africa, voting is underway in algerias president ial elections, more than 23 million are eligible to cast their ballots in a vote that it probably going to reelect Abdelaziz Boutefika. Six opposition parties announced theyll boycott the vote saying its unfairly tilted in the president s favour. There are five other candidates. Abdelaziz boutefikas main rival served as a judge and Prime Minister. His opponent in the upcoming polls will be fraud. This is the only woman in the race. She made history with a 2004 bid, becoming the first woman in the arab world to seek the presidency. Joining us for analysis on the elections is an International Lawyer and political analyst live from london. Can an ailing president win a fourth term in office. He has been crowned king since coming to power. He changed the constitution that only allowed two terms, now its a fourth. Society has changed. The regime has become disconnected from the reality ie of its people. The presence of the people, many are young. They do not connect or identify at all with the central town. They remain part of the regime, and managed by the military establishment, and the military intelligence, and thats is the only power in al jazeera power in algeria. Abdelaziz boutefika, despite making no purposes during the three week campaign, remains popular among algerians. Many say theyll vote for him, why is that, why do many think hes the best man . You said many people, but many people i have talked to, there are no terrorists. The people here, Abdelaziz Boutefika, and his fourth term, they have made a lot of money, they have working interiors, and led al jazeera to be the worst caught up in the region. Plus the good govern pans which the regime promised, the first free election hasnt been fulfilled. If you look at the algerian classification in the world, you see that corruption is widespread. And Everybody Knows them. Good governance is lacking no checks on balances, and this shows why the police is running a fourth term. Despite all the challenges that the country is facing, its one of a few arab counties that hasnt seep the arab spring, were there hasnt been a revolution, but theres a revolution which has been holding demonstrations saying enough. Since Abdelaziz Boutefika announced his bid. Could we see a revolution in algeria. You see when you look at algeria, like they talk to people, and you notice one thing, that there is a complete divorce between society of the people and the regime. Everybody knows that, except the regime. They pretend they dont know. If you look at them. Not many people are terrorists at all. Only those that are the head of the campaign. Remember one more in the system. They decide who will win, and decide to come forth and lose. Elections are not the deciding factor. That is the top military brass and the top military contingency. They decide amongst themselves, and they go to the elections to tell the outside world we have elections, parliamentary elections. Algeria has a Record Number of elections. Its the worst number of regime bar russia. Good to hear your thoughts, an International Lawyer and political analyst joining us from london. Theres more on the elections on the website, including a time line of the political evolution. We look at the power struggles shaping modern history at aljazeera. Com, and click on the middle east section. Indias mammoth general election reached its fifth phase. Its the biggest day at the polls with a quarter of 850 million casting their ballot. Theres voting across six states, 121 constit un sis, and will end on 5 may. Four have been killed in the town of fallujah. Seven have been injured in shelling in southern ports of a town outside the capital baghdad. In the north, 12 iraqi soldiers have been killed in an attack at a military bys in mosul base at moss you will city. 12 were injured. Syrias opposition is accusing the government in committing genocide in aleppo. Bashar alassads government has been dropping barrel bombs in an intense campaign targetting rebel areas. We have more from latakia. The bombs have a devastating effect. For the past four months the rebel held area east of aleppo was targeted by barrel bombs. Syrian government helicopters dropped them almost on a daily basis, and they dropped them on civilian areas. This campaign forced tens of tho thousands to leave. There was a large exodus due to the bombardment. Those who stayed got used to the bombing. It has become routine, and people are used to this life. Many who didnt want to live that way fled. Tens of thousands crossed to the governmentcontrolled west of the city, or further north to turkey. This used to be one of the busiest neighbourhoods in aleppo. Like many areas controlled by the opposition is almost deserted. Those that stayed behind struggled to stay alive. You cannot envy our situation, and the reason is coming from the sky. People can no longer feel safe and not protect themselves. The barrel bombs are not precise weapons, so they hit indiscriminately. They are cheap to make. Oil drums are filled with explosives, scrap metal. Since it began, more than 1 thus have been killed in barrel bomb attacks. The Syrian National coalition, the opposition in exile says what is happening in the largest city is genocide. It asked the United States to take an appropriate response, but so far the use of barrel bombs has only drawn condemnation. And so some syrians started a social Media Campaign to show the world how serious the situation is. Our people in aleppo are dying, and being killed by the Bashar Alassad regime. Until now, no one in this war wants to stop the killing machine. But we could make them listen to us. Apart from receiving messages of support, the save Aleppo Campaign has done little to end suffering. Life may go on in the city, which has been at war for almost two years. The barrel bomb campaign has not shifted the balance of power. The government may be hoping to gain traction on the opposition. Time for a check on the global weather. Here is richard with new zealand getting a battering. Its a long story, kick back, have a coffee. Put your feet up. Our story begins in april when Tropical Cyclone ita began to develop, making land fall around Cape Flattery in australia, causing a billion worth of declaration, us, before it moved away and lost its energy. It still is there as an exTropical Cyclone, as it moves towards new zealand. And it certainly has been causing problems across the country. We have had heavy rain fall in many places. Rain fall totals that i have seen reported not that great across the for north. 53mm. Some areas are likely to have seen 100mm or so, and totals over the next couple of days could come out at about 100 to 150mm in places. Christchurch during the course of the day, like to see 50mm much rain. Strong winds. We have been getting gusts between 100 and 120 k hr. Those are likely to continue. As we move through from friday to saturday, its a weakening feature, looking nasty across the country. Things will improve. Thank you very much. Now, china sent in an online blogger to three years in prison for spreading internet rumours. Chink chi yi is the first person to be imprisoned as part of a crackdown. China says the new rules on internet use are aimed at maintaining social order. Human Rights Groups accuse beijing of stifling freedom of speech. Weibo, known as a version of facebook and twitter is set to go public on the exchange. The site was launched five years ago, and is estimated to have attracted more than 500 million users. The company has not declared an annual profit. Craig liaison has more from hong kong. Weibo is chinese for microblock, a widely used network. It can be described as a hybrid between twitter and facebook, accessed by 30 of users and has a Market Penetration similar to that of twitter in the United States. When it was launched five years ago, it radically changed the way it has spread, with protests against government officials airing. Its highly monitored by the government and engages in its own selfcensorship. Everything is contrined. People from outside are going to use weibo if they are launching it publicly. Theyll try to educate. Finding who uses it is a difficult staff. Billions of zombie accounts are generated. Of more that 500 million users, 10 million generate messages. Its a platform for people to express themselves. I use it to keep up to date with news in china. Weibo is launching in the United States, because under chinese rules a company cannot float if it hasnt turned a profit. Weibo shares are to trade on the exchange on thursday. Well keep an eye on it in the coming hours on al jazeera. Coming up next no friends, no family and little money. We report from mexico where people are struggling to start over after being deported from the u. S. Also ahead. On the trail of tribecka. How a dose of movie magic gives new life to a neighbourhood. N. B. A. Wraps up, the reaction later in sport. And a look ahead to the play offs. Stay with us. Welcome back. You are watching the newshour, our top stories. 287 people are missing after a ferry sank off the coast of south korea. Divers are battling strong winds and difficult conditions. Leaders from the u. S. , e. U. , russia and ukraine are meeting in geneva to try to find a solution to end the crisis in ukraine. Russias president denied accusations that his troops are in Eastern Ukraine. Vladimir putin dismissed the allegations whilst answering questionings on a russian program. Joining us is a professor of political signs at the university of kiev academy, and joins us via skype. Thank you for being with us. First, tell us about we have lost him. Okay. We have lost our guest. Well try and have him back in a few minutes. Lets move on, in the meantime to rwanda, which says not enough is prevented to prevent a future mass atrocity sorry. The United Nations adopted a resolution to learn from the countrys 1994 genocide. Rwandas u. N. Ambassador welcomed the decision but says it needs to be followed with action. The horrific since coming from the central africa, syria, south sudan, will, in some cases convince many that the u. N. Is still grappling to match with realities on the ground, and that preventing mass atrocities still has a long way to go. While the legacy of the rwandan genocide is felt in many ways, including continued esentiment towards the media resentment towards the media. In 1994 it was used to create division. Now theres a private tv station, and men are skeptical about the role of the media. We have this report. Of the small studios of rwandas tv station, journalists are preparing for the main news bulletin of the day. Its the first and only private television station. Its a year old, and still facing challenges. When we stop, it was in february 2013. Only three people in the staff had experience with tv only three people. So most of our staff, they learn by doing, by practicing. Until recently private media as unheard of in rwanda. Its a good result. Many rwandans believe that they were complicit in the genocide in which moderate tutsis were killed. Journalists through the broadcast guided the killers to the hideouts of the victims. Its a perception for which journalist pay a heavy price, for being complicit. On that history, there was suspicion, suspicion on what is said on radio. And it depends on us in the industry how we can involve ourselves and the confidence and the trust. The most prominent hate media outlet in rwanda was a private station. Established in 1993, the Radio Station called for a war to exterminate the cockroaches, a time used to dehumanize the ethnic tutsis. When the jen side was brought genocide was brought to the end, there was a need to build a state media. A veteran journalist was called upon to do the job. Each time i thank god that i was part of the process. It was a chance to working with people that have gone through an experience that i am failing to comprehend every day. The case against journalists at the International Tribunal for crimes in rwanda sets a precedent in international law. It was the first time it was considered a genocide crime. One of the legacies is the recognition of the role media could play in atrocities, including genocide. Rwanda knows that too well. All right. Returning to the crisis in ukraine, and we have our guest back, professor of Political Science at the university of kiev academy. And did here via skype. Thank you for being with us. Crisis talks are going on in geneva. The Ukrainian Government is trying to restore its authority, it seems to be failing. Do you think its a government that is legitimate in the eyes of the ukrainian people. Are they in a good position to negotiate . The government is fact, existing fact. There was some problems, for which its initial stage of legitimization, so some Political Forces look not as fully, but its the acting government, and its the reality. Its the actor to be representative at international conference. Its very important event which should take serious decisions. Ukrainian present Ukrainian Government is not wholly experienced in dealing with such complex situations and is dependent. So the former america, europe, russia to meet and discuss is the best possible. Ukrainian government comes to discussions with some sort of ultimatum to russia, when it wants to receive everything from one side of the conflict. So let me be clear on that point sorry to interrupt you you say its a government not fully experienced, so what sort of bargaining to they have as they go into the talks. I do not see much bargaining. Its demanding for russia to find that russia lost its case. Its not the position to be realistic. So we need to find a kind of compromise. Look at the demands which russia puts forward. Its not a good idea when an external country demands a change. Deciding whether it will be a federation or not. Whether it will have one official language or two. And whether ukraine will be an internationally neutral country, not joining western systems. It should be a serious discussion involving americans, ukranianses, russians. A serious discussion, but a demand in the Ukrainian Government, is the return of crimea to ukraine. Thats not really going to happen, is it. No, its not realistic. I always wanted crimea to be part of ukraine. It happens. Now its not, at this stage, not even in this year to discuss. Now to discuss is the issue whether ukraine will go through a tragedy like in february that was worse than in february. We are at the brink of the situation. That is why the west and russia should explain to ukrainians that they should sit and discuss internally. Im pessimistic about todays results, as what i heard yesterday in discussions. They are different sides the west and russia. So probably today it will be the same picture. So we need a third party to step in. Maybe al jazeera and gulf monarchy can pay attention, its totally different in comparison with syria issue. Okay. When you, the gulf actors may be seen as those who do not have any vested interest. Okay. We need others to come with no vested interest and present the framework for possible peaceful solution. Thank you, we are going to leave it there. Fro the university of kiev. Thank you for your time. Two afghani interpreters working for n. A. T. O. Forces have been murdered by the taliban for the last 16 months. Several are worried they will claim the same fate. Many are not being given the help they are asking for. Protesting outside the heavily fortified entrance in kabul is perhaps as close as the former military interpreters get to British Military. Branded as spies. They want asylum in the u. K. The British Government would prefer they stay here. It was like hell. We were going on the ground. We were facing taliban, even though we were not trained. We had the biggest force. The fact that i joint the forces. I could help my country because i knew english. Nobody else was happy to join the interpretation. This man interpreted for the British Military in helmand province, then his family got a warping letter from the taliban. Prison warning is the last warning. After that theyll come to you, they will kill all your family. More than 20 afghan interpreters are thought to have died serving alongside british troops. Despite the risks the British Government is reluctant to provide asylum for all those working as interpreters. Settlement was offered to about half of the interpreters. Others were offered training and redundancy. Thats when the british Prime Minister announced a troop drawdown. Those that left before dont qualify. The interpreters say a cut off is irrelevant to the taliban. In venezuela demonstrators marched bare foot against a shortage much basic goods and high costs of living. Its the latest antigovernment protest in caracas. For two weeks president nicolas maduro, and the opposition have been trying to find ways to stop the unrest. Now, last week we brought you the story of the people being deported by the u. S. Government, despite evidence that they may, in fact, be american citizens. When we met esteban tiznado, he was in prison in arizona, and on saturday he was deported to mexico much adam raney met up with him in nogales, mexico, along the u. S. Border. Esteban tiznado is afraid to stand still. Back in mexico he is wary of kidnapping gangs and corrupt police. They were going to take me to gaol. He said he had to pay them 10 to leave him alone. He wanders the streets of nogales with no friends, family and no money. Hes overwhommed. At the age of 40, hes forced to start over. Depressed. Stressing. Im in this position, thats why. This is the sixth time esteban tiznado has been deported. He says hes a u. S. Citizen. In 2008 he convinced a federal criminal court that he had a right to be in the United States. But an immigration judge said he hasnt proved hes a citizen, and with a criminal record, including domestic violence, drug possession and burglary, deporting him was a priority. Esteban tiznado is one of 2 Million People deported under obama. Those that champion the rights of migrants said the u. S. Government had a clear strategy. To make it so hard that that suffering gets you to bow down and break and then say i cant do it any more. That strategy may be working. For the first time esteban tiznado is questioning whether to cross back, knowing it will likely mean more gaol time. Deportees are dropped off in the border city every day. Migrants come to places like this throughout the day looking for basic services showers, to make phone calls or eat a meal. Other than the extremely basic things they are giving, they are not given much support to start theirs lives over. Esteban tiznado, like them, needs help. He asks to borrow a phone. Nearly out of money he calls his sister in the u. S. And she wires him 100, enough for a trip to the coast. He heard theres more jobs on the beach than the desert. He would like to cross back. I dont want to go to gaol. He dreams of being allowed to go home. A dream he now knows may never come true. Up next on the newshour turning 50 and no sign of a midlife crisis. The famous ford mustang celebrates its birthday, and in sport a touch of path as gareth bale helps his side to another victory. Welcome back.
