9 May 1950, the foundation of the European Union as we know it was set out in an extraordinary declaration based on two core principles:
peace and
Europe after the war
In 1950, European countries were slowly recovering from the human and economic devastation caused by World War II, under the shadow of the renewed global tensions sparked by the Cold War.

A group of European politicians, most of whom had experienced the ravages of the two world wars, shared a vision of a united Europe that would prevent future conflict between European countries. Those politicians later became known as the
