And office buildings — well, it’s not yet clear what will happen to them.
Changes in the retail sector are already underway, said Hemo, whose firm has offices in Cherry Hill and Philadelphia.
“We are seeing uses that have traditionally occupied office spaces now interested in retail spaces,” he observed.
“Service industries, such as insurance brokers, medical/dental offices, and specialty pharmacies are taking advantage of the street frontage, high visibility, and foot traffic that many of these centers offer,” Hemo added.
As one sign of the shift, Gopuff — a firm that delivers food, drink and household needs — wants to open a “micro-fulfillment” center in a former Kmart at the Brooklawn Shopping Center.
