SOUTH BEND — More than 70 community activists, city officials and members of law enforcement came together Tuesday night as a first step to reevaluating the role police officers play in schools.
"Let's try to go through the evening having a better understanding of what other people think," Mayor James Mueller said at the meeting, held at Washington High School. "And then we can continue the conversation about where do we go from here?"
The meeting about the School Resource Officer program comes at a time of national reckoning following the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd last summer. It also comes less than a month after Black Lives Matter South Bend and Community Action for Education activists called for the removal of officers from South Bend schools.
