Legends suggest that Lord Shiva looks after the Universe in the absence of Lord Vishnu, for four months. Hence, devotees pay ode to Mahadev and his consort, Devi Parvati, by observing a fast on Mondays (Somwar) and Tuesdays (Mangalwar), respectively.
