There are few sins in Australian politics more grave than being considered an elitist. Which is a strange way to assess national leaders, people who by the very arithmetic of democratic selection are an elite and rarefied group. Our national distaste for both elitism and arrogance drags Australian public conversation and political aspiration towards the safety of low, common denominators, the sanctuaries of mass taste and the consoling comfort of inertia. Big and transformative ideas are inherently risky.
