THERE are whispers in the wind that a kite may be flown in 2021 for one of Worcester’s most controversial planning proposals of the last 30 years.
Plans to build a superstore on the western half of Cripplegate Park, with the trade-off being to divert Hylton Road and extend the park down to the riverside, hit the buffers after much fractious debate in 1993, but they have never really gone away.
Indeed, one of the scheme’s main enthusiasts back then, leading local politician Roger Berry, warned Worcester would live to regret the decision “for years to come” and no doubt the project is still filed away in a drawer somewhere.
