The Sevier County Property Assessor’s office completed its latest round or reappraisals this year, with property values rising in all the cities as well as outlying parts of the county.
However, state law doesn’t allow cities to use those appraisals as a backdoor tax increase. It requires them to either adjust the property tax so that it draws about the same revenues, or to go through the usual process for seeking a tax hike.
So this year’s adjustment — from $.20 to $.16 per $100 of assessed value — should keep most property owners paying about the same rate.
The commission approved the rate as a temporary rate because the Sevier County Board of Equalization has still been reviewing appeals of the new property assessments.
