A $5 scratch-off ticket bought in Hampstead turned into a big cash prize Thursday.
After purchasing the CA$H PLU$ ticket from the Hampstead Country Store on U.S. Highway 17 South, Eric McVey won a top prize of $200,000, according to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
McVey claimed the prize on Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.
After federal and state tax withholdings, he took home a total of $141,501.
The CA$H PLU$ started in March with six top prizes of $200,000. Two are still available for players to win.
Proceeds from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million a year for education. During the 2020 fiscal year, education programs in Pender County received more than $4 million in lottery funds.
