AFL Players' Association president Patrick Dangerfield believes Jack Viney's two-match suspension is a fair outcome after an "ugly" incident led to the Melbourne midfielder being banned for serious misconduct.
Viney was sent directly to the tribunal and found guilty on Tuesday night of pressing and holding his elbow into the neck and throat of Gold Coast defender Sam Collins.
The Demons vice-captain pleaded guilty and accepted the incident was "not a great look for the game" but was adamant Collins had instigated contact between the pair.
Viney also argued he had made meaningful contact only to the jaw, not the neck or throat, after acting in "self-defence" to stop Collins from flipping him onto his back.
